CATAMARAN CHARTER DODECANESE ISLANDS

Catamarans are characterized by their two hulls, which provide not only significantly more stability but also more space, privacy, and comfort than a classic monohull sailing yacht. All catamarans have fantastic sundecks, trampolines, and a spacious living room, which offers excellent views on the beautiful Greek scenery. Catamarans usually have a considerable small draft which allows them to get into shallow waters close to the shore. They are an ideal choice for a cruise with a group of friends or family.

You may start your sailing trip to the Dodecanese Islands from different marinas, according to yacht availability, flight schedules, charter duration and desired itineraries: Marina Rhodes (Rhodes) or Marina Kos (Kos).

You may see below our wide range of catamarans that can be offered for bareboat charter, skippered charter, or crewed charter.

Please note that for a bareboat charter you need to hold a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you are holding an ASA or RYA equivalent license, it can be easily converted into an ICC in your home country. We further advise that at least one additional guest holds an RYA Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent.

Dodecanese Yacht Charter Guide Greece

Contact us here if you are consideringing a Dodecanese yacht charter holiday in Greece . There is also more info on the Dodecanese Islands here . The Dodecanese is a worthy yachting destination when you are looking for a classically Greek holiday experience. This well-known Greece charter area is in the eastern region of the Mediterranean is composed of 12 large islands. These islands are great when you want to experience local traditions while enjoying an interesting blend of Greek Island cultures during your luxury yacht charter holiday.

The Dodecanese area in Greece is made up of 32 islands, and so a Dodecanese yacht charter is a wonderful way to see the full beauty and history of Greece the best way - by water. Many of these islands are near the Turkish coast where the ancient Ottoman influences can still be seen today. A popular destination for many European tourists is Rhodes, the largest of these islands. There are a number of local and visitor private charter yachts available in this part of Greece this season, both sailing and motor yachts. A list of yachts for rent and their costs can be viewed below.

The Greece Dodecanese Islands are an interesting Mediterranean yacht charter destination. The islands lie in a crescent chain along the Asian Turkish coast curving west towards Crete and are suited to both motor and sailing yacht charters. A Dodecanese yacht charter vacation offers quite a variety so they are difficult to sumarise, except to say that they have rustic and rugged landscapes, clear blue ocean stretches and they could be considered generally to be less touristy than the Cyclades and other parts of Greek Islands . Dodecanes represent a fantastic Greece yacht charter holiday destination

Kos

The Dodecanese Sailing Experience

The region includes wonderful places to visit on a luxurious superyacht charter and many are located near the Turkish coast where the ancient Ottoman influences can still be seen today. The Rhodes is the largest of these islands and a popular destination for many European tourists, consisting of several castles, temples the Acropolis of Lindos and The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many archaeological places of interest situated all over the island.

If you are planning to discover and experience the Greece Dodecanese on board your favorite yacht rental, this will include island destinations like Halki, Kassos, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Leros, Kos, Lipsi, Astipalea, Patmos, Nisyros, Tilos, and Symi.

Hugged by the south end regions of the Aegean Sea, the islands of Dodecanese are rock formations underneath the sea that have been gradually pushed by nature over hundreds of years until the highest peaks were eventually exposed and turned into islands of varying sizes and shapes. For a yacht charter sailor, the journey to this region means an abundance of islets, crevices, coves and underwater rock formations.

The prevailing climate on Dodecanese ranges from dry tropical to temperate. On the low end, yacht charterers will experience wet and moderate winter months, and on the high end, several months of warm and dry summer. That means luxuriant sunlight with steady or no winds at all. This makes it an ideal destination for those who want to spend their Greek holiday on board a superyacht for some relaxation and nice tan.

The lush greenery in most of the islands in Dodecanese consists of cedar, olive and cypress, and these are interspersed by aromatic plants like lavender, thyme and oregano. Majority of the islands and islets that are uninhabited have become sanctuaries of migratory birds as the region lies along the route taken by a diverse species of migrating birds.

One of the advantages of chartering a luxury yacht is the ability to find your own secluded beach free from the summertime crowds. Here, the group can swim, sunbathe and play with the water toys free from noise and pollution. If you remain close to the main islands, many day trippers will only visit from mid-morning until mid-afternoon, leaving you a beach all to yourself when they leave later in the day - perfect for a romantic candlelit dinner.

The picturesque island of Kos is one such destination that can only be accessed via air or sea. Tourism is the primary industry and the soft sand beaches are popular for their warm, crystal clear turquoise seas. For a truly authentic experience of island life, guests can sample the local produce which includes almonds, olives, tomatoes, grapes and figs, all of which can be used in your meals prepared by an expert chef.

A highlight of the Greek Islands is Nisyros, where volcanic slopes produce lush vegetation and the coast is a visual delight of rocky inlets and sandy beaches lined with almond and walnut trees. The friendly locals on this tiny island of Marathi welcome visitors with local wine and fresh seafood dishes. After a swim in a deserted bay there’s nothing better than trying the mouth-watering Greek cuisine.

A Glimpse at the Glorious Old Greece

The islands of Dodecanese have a notable contribution to the rich history and diverse culture of Greece. Dodecanese is the acknowledged seat of the ancient Minoan civilization. Physical evidence of this glorious past still exists in surviving ancient structures and artifacts, which are found in the islands of Dodecanese, particularly in the Rhodes town. During the Roman times, the Rhodes Island emerged as the cradle of knowledge, and eventually was ceded as part of the territory of the Roman Empire, instead of just being a mere ally.

Approximately over 2000 years ago the Colossus of Rhodes fell, however the island still has lots for visitors to enjoy. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many archaeological places of interest situated all over the island. These include several castles, palaces, temples and the Acropolis of Lindos.

The beaches near the town get very busy in the peak season however you can find almost deserted smaller beaches elsewhere. These are ideal for swimmers, surfers and sunbathers.

The pretty island of Kos, one of the smaller islands, has an airport which you can fly to. Many of the locals earn a living by producing almonds, olives, tomatoes, grapes and figs although the main draw is tourism. Kos is very popular for its lovely beaches and warm blue waters.

A major advantage in chartering a luxury yacht to this region is the opportunity to visit the small islands that aren’t on the main tourist routes. With many day trippers arriving mid-morning until mid-afternoon, you might have a beach all to yourself when they leave later in the day.

A highlight of the Greek Islands is Nisyros. There’s lush vegetation here, volcanic slopes, sandy beaches, rocky inlets, almond and walnut trees. The friendly locals on this tiny island of Marathi welcome visitors with local wine and fresh seafood dishes. After a swim in a deserted bay there’s nothing better than trying the mouth-watering Greek cuisine.

Overall the Dodecanese Islands of Greece are a very interesting place to visit for your yacht charter holiday in the summer season and there are a range of boats available to rent, from the largest superyachts down to the smallest crewed charter yachts.

Dodecanese islands are fairly bare of vegetation - although not to such an extent as the Cycladic Islands - in fact several islands are abundant with natural springs, especially Kos and Rhodes (Rodos), which are also relatively green and wooded. Their inhabitants live by farming, sponge-fishing (the Dodecanese forms the base of the Greek sponge-fishing fleet), but increasingly, the tourist trade and visiting charter boats.

THE DODECANESE ISLANDS

DODECANESE ISLANDS HISTORY

The name "Dodecanese" came into use in 1908 when twelve islands of this group excluding Lipsi, Kos and Rhodes but including an outsider, Ikaria, protested about their deprivation of the special privileges and tax exemptions they had been granted in the 16th century by the Turks. Like most of the Greek Islands, the Dodecanese are the tops of mountains that stood on the plain of the Aegean before they were flooded. They are situated between the islands of Crete, the Cyclades, lkarias, Samos and the Asia Minor seaboard an other very interesting yacht charter crusisng grounds for sailing and motor yachts.

The Dodecanese (twelve islands or Dodekanes - Rhodes, Astypalia, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kos, Leros, Nysiros, Patmos, Symi, Tilos. Halki) are the most southerly group of islands in the Southern Sporades, lying off the south-west coast of Asia Minor. The Island group includes the larger islands of Kos, Lipsi, Patmos, Leros, Symi, Kalymnos, Astypalea, Nisyros, Tilos, Rhodes, Khalki, Karpathos and Kasos, together with some 40 smaller islets and rocks. Apart from the twelve main islands, which gave the name to the island complex the islets of Lipsi, Pserimos, Agathonisi, Sari, Kastellorizo, Levitha, Giali, Kinaros amongst other islets, barren islets and rock peaks, all constitute the group of islands known as the Dodecanese.

Often charter yachts have their bases in either Kos or Rhodes. Keep in mind that the northerly winds do influence any itinerary and that a down wind one-way charter from Kos to Rhodes is popular. Other charter bases in the area are Samos (Pythagorion port) to the north and Paros (Paroikia port) to the west.

Neither in Greek or in Roman times was the Dodecanese a separate political entity. Rather, they were an administrative region of the Byzantine Empire. Only when the islands came under Turkish rule in the 16th century were they given extensive rights of self-government in domestic affairs and gained a common political status.

There are forests and bush lands of pine, cypress, wild olive, cedar, mastic, arbutus bush and holly. There is also a variety of annual and long lasting turf, aromatic plants (oregano, thyme, lavender), carob and olive trees. This all makes for a rich mosaic of plant varieties. Often on the islets unique plant and animal species have been observed (especially reptiles and invertebrate), remnants of an isolated evolution and adaptation to the unique conditions, which were created when these islets were cut off from the larger islands.

Rare species of birds such as birds of prey small hawks, wild pigeons, herons and cormorants find refuge in the many caves, crevices in the rocks, high rocky formations and dangerous dins.

The well-known "Meltemi" is blows during summer from the NW-W beginning in mid June and continuing till mid October. It often blows strongly in the months of July, August and September reaching a wind force of 7 and this should be considered on your yacht charter planning. In spring time the prevailing wind is mainly SE and not very strong. During the winter it usually blows SE and sometimes N or S.

The Best Season To Visit

During the "Meltemi" time, especially in July and August, the gusts of the lee of the islands of Patmos, Kalymnos, Kos, Nissiros, Tilos, Karpathos and Astypalaia can be very strong, even if the wind in the open sea is not strong. The temperature in the summer may reach 35° C, although the average temperature is less.

santorini THE DODECANESE ISLANDS

A SNAP-SHOT OF SOME OF THE ISLANDS Agathonisi Agathonisi is the north-most islet of the Dodecanese island complex. It has an impressive coastal configuration and many beautiful windless bays. Astipalea (Astypalia) Astypalea, called Ichthyoessa (Island of the Fish) by the ancients for its rich fisheries. It resembles two islands linked by a natural bridge. Halki Halki looks like a part of Rhodes but without the great current of tourism. It is a mountainous island and ideal for those who wish for peaceful holidays. Kalimnos An island of barren rock, golden beaches and tiny green valleys. It owes its fame to its celebrated sponge fishers. Karpathos An oblong island and the third largest in the Dodecanese. Boasts incomparable natural beauties and traditions jealously guarded by its inhabitants. Kassos This is land is at the southern end of the Dodecanese towards Crete via the Carpathian Sea. Kastelorizo (Megisti) A small but heroic island to the east end of the Aegean. An outer link of the wondrous Dodecanese chain it used to be called since Antiquity, Megisti mean ‘maxima’. Kos This island gave the world Hippocrates – the father of medicine. It looks like a huge floating garden and the city is built along a wide bay and catches the eye from the very first moment. Leros A generally mountainous island with deep bays often full of green vegetation. Also picturesque valleys and dented coasts. Lipsi A small charming island with magnificent beaches. You will also find picturesque charming tavernas which serving fresh fish and local wine. Nisyros Approaching Nisyros by boat you cannot fail to be deeply impressed by the visual image. It has perfectly white houses, dense greenery, and the colors of the volcanic soil. Patmos Called Jerusalem of the Aegean, Patmos is an island of ascetic austerity. It is made of rock and bays and surrounded by seagull islands. Simi (Symi) Is mainly a rocky island, except for its southern part which is covered with pines as well as mulberries and fruit-bearing trees. Tilos An island with iconic sandy beaches, full of springs and streams and Genoan towers. It is uncrowded and there are few tourists.

The word “Dodecanese” literally means “the 12 Islands” (Halki, Kassos, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Leros, Kos, Lipsi, Astipalea, Patmos, Nisyros, Tilos, and Symi). Dodecanese is actually a group of islands composed of 12 larger islands and 150 islets. It lies in a region off the southwest coast of Turkey. Of these 162 islands of Dodecanese, only 26 are inhabited, and form the modern-day Greek prefecture.

Dodecanese is an ideal sailing destination for tourists and sailors who want to experience the glorious history of ancient Greece as well as the natural splendor of modern-day Greek holiday on board their favorite crewed Greece luxury yacht.

Sailing in the Dodecanese Islands

Perfect for island-hopping, with over 150 of them in the Dodecanese!

Yacht and Catamaran Charter in the Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese islands are a collection of over 150 islands located furthest from mainland Greece - with so many islands to explore, strong and reliable winds, guaranteed sunshine, a good range of places to stay, and very welcoming locals, the islands are something of a sailor’s paradise./strong>

You’ve probably already heard of the two most popular holiday islands here - as well as having beaches which landlubbers flock to, Kos is the birthplace of modern medicine (and you can still sit under the same tree that Hippocrates taught from) and Rhodes once held one of the seven wonders of the ancient world (The Colossus of Rhodes) and is dominated by medieval castles which date back to the crusades.

There’s scores of harder to reach beaches that are largely unspoilt but just as brilliant as the ones that attract millions of people to the area each year, and there’s more to the Dodecanese than these two major beach-holiday destinations – for example, the Cave of Revelation on Patmos where St John wrote chunks of the Bible, the volcano of Nisyros, the stunning town and monastery on Symi, the best olives in the world on Kalymnos, the nature reserve of Marathos, and much more besides.

We currently have two bases to sail from in the Dodecanese. Rhodes (nearest airport: Rhodes) and Kos (nearest airport: Kos) are both excellent jumping off points for really exploring these islands.

Yacht Charter Dodecanese Greek Islands Guide

Home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, you must visit Rhodes during your boat charter Dodecanese, located within striking distance of the Turkish coast.

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese group and is where you will find the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue erected to the god Helios in 280 B.C. Though it fell during an earthquake some 50 years later, the 30-meter-high statue was one of the tallest in the ancient world, and remnants can still be seen today.

This is just some of the magic you’ll experience when cruising the Dodecanese aboard your luxury yacht. Rhodes is ripe with historical sites, from temples to castles. If you’re keen to visit, they’re worth adding to your itinerary, but if lazing about and soaking in the Greek sunshine is more your speed, Rhodes is also home to stunning beaches, some busy, others tranquil and less frequented. Beyond its historical and natural wonders, you will find a cosmopolitan vibe buzzing in Rhodes, especially in Rhodes Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’ve had your fill of dining aboard the yacht, many posh eateries and enticing clubs cater to yachting’s elite.

Also on the itinerary is the island of Kos, which, despite its size, has a lot to offer. A place of ancient literature, Kos receives a mention in Homer’s “Iliad,” which will delight any literature fans. The beaches on the island of Kos are not to be missed. The captain and crew can set up beach picnics for any meal you choose or can tender you ashore and allow you to enjoy peace and solitude. Agios Stefanos Beach is pristine and quiet. Make sure you take the time to explore Kos Town, with its picturesque streets, pretty white-washed buildings, and local boutiques and tavernas.

If you seek adventure during a Dodecanese yacht charter, consider a stop on Nisyros, between Kos and Tilos. One of the most beautiful of the Dodecanese isles, the island is punctuated by its active volcano and walkable crater. If you work up an appetite while traversing the crater and exploring, many local tavernas offer fresh-caught, delicious seafood, a true delicacy of the region.

Praised for the mild, sunny climate, the archipelago of the Dodecanese Islands makes for a perfect yachting route that allows smooth sailing all year round.

The stunningly clear waters that encompass leave so much to be enjoyed in the sunniest corner of Greece . Dodecanese means 12 islands if literally translated, but there are actually 16 inhabited and another 11 uninhabited ones to explore as you sail the glittering seas.

catamaran charter dodecanese

Karpathos , Patmos , Kasos , Astipalaia , Lipsoi , Leros , Kalimnos , Nisuros , Tilos , Chalki , Symi , Rhodes , Cos , Kastellorizo all have their unique charm.

With some of the islands being beautifully developed, the true gems of the area are mercifully spared from overwhelming tourism - there are more secret azure beaches in the Dodecanese than one can fully explore in a lifetime.

The influence of numerous rulers has resulted in an impressive mix of architecture - Ottomans, Venetians and Italians have all left their mark, and the medieval landmarks give a peculiar charm to these wildly underestimated sailing routes. Each island has a different quality to offer - from rock climbing, lazy days spent sun bathing, exploring the cultural heritage and even soul searching.

Comfortable marinas are found along the coast - Rhodes and Kos offer the biggest selection, but you'll find anchorages and buoys throughout the archipelago.

Aside from Kos , perhaps the most popular island of the Dodocanese family is Rhodes . The largest island of the archipelago is known for its organized and secluded blue-green beaches, medieval Old town, and wonderful climate. On land, walking through the cobblestone streets gives a feel of time travel. The heritage of Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem that ruled the island from 1310 to 1522 is very preserved - the Kastello in the Old Town , also known as the Palace of the Grand Master is one of few examples of gothic architecture in Greece. Here you can see Byzantine mosaics or enjoy the views.

Archeological sites are scattered along the coast. While Rhodes was historically famous for the giant bronze statue of Kollos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , it still homes numerous historical monuments and buildings. Various rulers and inhabitants gave this island a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Tsambika , Saint Paul's bay, Ladiko, Kallithea are some of the well-known beaches of this island, but make sure to visit Tsambika beach. Named after the monastery - that you can visit if you don't mind climbing some steps, this beach offers beautiful, clear waters and is spared from tourist crowds. Agathi is also one of Rhodos' hidden gems - the golden sand and pristine offer make for a scenic view.

To experience spectacular Greek cuisine, head to the Tris Village and dine at Ta Kioupa restaurant, named one of the 10 best restaurants in the world by The Guardian .

Cutting deep into the coast of Asia minor, this gorgeous island is admired for both its creamy-sandy beaches and its rich cultural heritage.

Ancient Asklepieon dating back to 3 century BC is a wonderful example of Doric architecture, built to honor the god of health and medicine.

To see where Hippocrates once studied and practiced medicine, visit Asklepios. The ruins of what was once the greatest hospital of ancient Greece and sanctuary for the god of healing Asclepius offer insight into the hellenic civilization as well as astonishing views of the Gulf of Karamos and Anatolia.

Therma beach is the place to swim in volcanic heated hot springs where water temperature reaches 50 degrees. Due to high mineral content of sulfur, magnesium, potassium, it offers many therapeutic benefits to those suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, as well as liver, pharmacological and even blood disorders.

Sail to the Kastri islet to enjoy both history and relaxation at once. This barren islet is situated right across the Kefalos beach . The peculiar rock formation hides the small, picturesque chappel of Agios Nikolaos, built on the former temple of Poseidon, gleaming white and blue from the uniform beige palette. It's so close to Kefalos you can actually swim from one place to the other - if you find yourself craving some beachside dining in an upscale setting, visit the Ouzo restaurant.

If you find yourself in the mood for some watersports such as windsurfing, visit the Mastichari Beach. Sandy, gorgeous and windy, this really is the perfect place to enjoy adventure in a Eden-like environment.

Often called the most beautiful of the Dodecanese , Karpathos is simply a symphony in blue. The endless sea horizons and rocky cliffs hide some of worlds most incredible beaches. Due to the somewhat remote location, the island was spared from over overdevelopment of tourism and has kept pristine nature, as well as unique culture and even dialect, similar to that of Crete and Cyprus.

The island offers beaches to suit everyone's tastes - the smaller ones that offer better wind protection are found on the east coast, south you'll come across the finest white sand, and west you'll find the very windy, but perfect for surfing due to the strong, dry Meltemi wind, and the north is the place to explore hidden jewels only accessible by boat .

Christou Pigad i is a gorgeous secluded beach, offering fine white sand and pristine sands. Apella, Damatria and Lefkos are the most popular choices, while Michaliou Kipos Beach is a scenic and quiet oasis of completely translucent waters and white rocks covered in seashells and corals.

While the bountiful, yet quiet beaches are truly the main attraction, this island is famous for it's peculiar and special customs. Sail north to see the most private sea sights, but also to discover vestiges of a matriarchy in Olympos, a village resembling Cinque Terre where coloful houses clash on rocky cliffs.

The village was founded 1,000 years ago when pillaging pirates dropped off future inhabitants in the highly isolated mountains. Only discovered in the 70s, the people that live here speak a dialect that is over 2 millenia old and live in a matiarchal system.

Kastellorizo

Hurry up to explore the best kept secret of the Dodecanse before others discover it - officially known as Megisti, this gorgeous island served as the set of Oscar-winning film Mediterraneo and hides some of the most picturesque and authentic scenery in all of Greece.

Little fishing boats bring their daily catch of fish to the small tavernas and eateries that surround the harbor, brightly colored facades are dimly lit and mirror in the sea - Kastellorizo is a remarkable spot to visit and enjoy fiercely genuine Greek hospitality.

While it doesn't offer spectacular beaches like Kos or Rhodos to explore by foot, while sailing you'll discover many bays that you can selfishly enjoy alone, with crystal clear waters and unspoilt nature.

Colorful neoclassical houses, historical monasteries, spectacular beaches and tempting dishes can all be found in the stunning Symi island .

Ai Giorgis Dyssalonas astounds visitors with the 300 metres high cliff surrounding the azure waters. Agia Marina is known for the really incredible turquoise seas. Marathounda on the other hand is famous for its visitors. The freeroaming goats - yes, you read that right, often come to enjoy a beach day on this laid-back sea oasis.

If you decide to stroll a little, make sure to buy some natural sponges. The Symiots were known as masterful divers who sold their sponges to Italians, English and French - all that remains of what was once the island's main industry are picturesque souvenir shops. Restaurant Tholos is the go to option when looking to enjoy some upscale cuisine , but make sure to explore the local eateries that serve simple, yet fresh and authentic Greek specialties .

Yacht Charter Dodecanese

Dodecanese yacht charters come with almost all the luxuries of a 5-star hotel, with the added bonus of an amazing view. As you navigate the waters of the beautiful islands of the Dodecanese, you will discover endless opportunities for sightseeing and adventure at every turn. The most significant difference between yachting in the Dodecanese compared to other regions is the number of days you can spend exploring the islands by water. As the islands are much closer together than, for example, the Caribbean or the Bahamas, you can easily spend a week exploring multiple islands.

Which is the Best Time to Charter a Gulet or Yacht in the Dodecanese?

The best time to charter a gulet or luxury motor yacht in the Dodecanese is in the spring and early summer months of April and June. During these months the weather is warm, there are fewer tourists, and the sea is calm. This is the perfect time to explore the many beautiful coves and remote beaches that the region has to offer. If you are interested in seeing the incredible firefly displays that occur in the summer months, then you can also charter a yacht in the fall. However, there are far fewer fireflies during this time of year, so you may be a little disappointed.

Costs and Pricing for Dodecanese Yacht Rental or Gulet Charter

The cost of yacht rental in the Dodecanese is very reasonable, especially compared to yacht charter in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. While the price of yacht rental in the Caribbean tends to fluctuate due to the seasonality, the Mediterranean is a consistent rate. The amount you will pay to charter a yacht in the Dodecanese is highly dependent on the type of yacht you choose to charter. A luxury yacht will cost significantly more than a gulet yacht. The average price for a luxury yacht rental in the Dodecanese is between $35,000 - 150,000 per week, with the gulet yacht costing between $17,500 - 70,000. With this type of yachts, you can set your own itinerary and stay in any location for as long as you want.

Other Information About Chartering a Yacht in Greece

If you are interested in a luxury yacht charter or gulet rental in Dodecanese island, you should book at least 6 months in advance to avoid disappointment. You should also keep in mind that not all yachts are available to charter year-round. You can expect to pay much more during the summer months due to an increase in demand. Not all yachts are available to charterers. Only a small percentage of yachts in Greece are available for charter, and those that are often booked months in advance. So, the key is to book early. If you are not in a rush to travel, it may be worth considering a trip in the off-season. You will be able to negotiate a much better price and likely find availability on more yachts. Of course, this also means you will miss out on the fantastic weather usually experienced in the summer months.

Final Words: Is Renting A Yacht in Greece Right For You?

If you want to experience Greece like a VIP and see the country from an entirely different perspective, then yachting in the Dodecanese is a must. Chartering a yacht is an incredible experience that all travellers must try at least once in their lives. The sheer number of places you can explore in the limited time that you have available when yachting is truly amazing. Yes, it can be challenging to organize, but the end result is worth it. When you charter a yacht in the Dodecanese, you can expect to see crystal-clear waters, stunning islands, and friendly people. You can explore the many coves and remote beaches that you would struggle to reach by road.

Pserimos is a tiny island of 80 inhabitants, a great one-night stop to experience life in one of the remotest corners of Greece. Feel free to engage with the friendly locals and talk about the life on the island, taste the catch of the day and enjoy the tranquillity of the beautiful surroundings.

SUN: KALYMNOS

Kalymnos is one of the most affluent islands in Greece. The island flourished due to sponge fishing. Kalymnos has a wild, rocky landscape and has recently become a famous as a rock-climbing destination hosting international festivals. The locals have preserved much of their traditional way of life. The island is rich in picturesque villages, where time stops, and days go by pleasantly and quietly. Getting around by car is the best way to explore and is highly recommended.

Pothia is the capital and the main port of Kalymnos. Take time to stroll around the impressive well-preserved mansions, the whitewashed bright coloured houses, the narrow alleys and old churches. Visit the Monastery of Agios Savvas to enjoy the incredible views over Pothia and the surrounding area.

MON: LEIPSOI

Today’s destination is Leipsoi, a 4-5 hour sail from Kalymnos. We will stop en-route for a swim at the transparent azure waters of the tiny Makronisi. Leipsoi is a small island but there is so much to discover here. The village is surrounding the deep bay of the island’s harbour. Stroll around its cosy alleyways and blue-shuttered houses and visit the blue-domed church of “Panagia tou Harou” to enjoy the sunset views. The village is where the evening action happens. Enjoy the true island vibe and the smell of the charcoal grilled fish food that dominates the atmosphere. Try the catch of the day in the traditional tavernas owned by the fishermen and get a taste of the local wine and the excellent thyme honey.

TUE: ARKI & PATMOS

It’s beach hopping day! Our trip includes several stops in the remote islets and the heavenly waters of the Leipsoi archipelago. Our first stop is Aspronisi, a tiny rock with a white pebbled beach. Next is the stunning Tiganakia, a hidden paradise of Arki island. Marathos island is a quick 15’ sail from there. Two families that live here manage the tavernas located on either side of the bay.

Their owners have laid mooring buoys so that sailors can enjoy their food and the beautiful surroundings. You will fall in love with the serene atmosphere and remote feeling of Arki and Marathos. If you are looking for a livelier place to spend the night, then the nearby Patmos is 1.5 hours away.

WED: PATMOS

Patmos is a one-of-a-kind destination. The island has a rich history, intense spirituality and amazing natural beauty. Its impressive topography creates stunning views from almost every corner. Patmos has always been one of the most loved tourist destinations in Greece attracting visitors such as celebrities and royalty. All that while maintaining its genuine feel and charm.

Patmos is a significant Christian pilgrimage site. The Cave of the Apocalypse is where St. John the Theologian (St John the Divine) is said to have transcribed the Book of Revelations (Apocalypse). High above the Chora, a fortress-like 11th-century monastery dedicated to the Saint overlooks the whitewashed houses of the village. The Chora, the Monastery and the Cave of the Apocalypse are a Unesco World Heritage Site. Take your time for sightseeing and shopping, then follow the downhill foot path from the Chora to the harbour; the gorgeous views along the way are highly rewarding.

Leros has amazing landscapes, fishing villages, scenic tavernas, ancient ruins and an extraordinary modern history. It has only recently made it into the tourist radar. The coastal town of Agia Marina is the main settlement and our destination for tonight.

Take time to explore its abundant collection of whitewashed houses, neoclassical buildings and narrow streets. Atop Agia Marina sits the imposing medieval castle of the Knights of Saint John. Hiking there is the best way to enjoy some stunning views along the way.

If you are in for more exploration, driving around will get you to lovely seaside villages such as Alinda, Xirokambos and Partheni. Krifos is an isolated small cove with fantastic waters and a must-stop for a dive. Try scuba-diving if you are into it! The sea around Leros is rich in reefs and old shipwrecks.

The trip from Agia Marina to Kos lasts about 4 hours and there are several places on the way to stop for a swim. Xirokampos bay on Leros’ south coast, Akti bay at Kalymnos and Vathy bay in the east of Pserimos are all excellent spots. You should arrive in Kos no later than 8 pm; this will give you plenty of time to relax at the marina or venture off to the town, once more.

Time to say goodbye. Until next time, of course! Check-out is by 9am on the Saturday; if needed this can be done on Friday evening, according to your plans. There are several taxis available at the marina and the airport is an easy 30’ away.

Dodecanese islands

Yacht Charter Dodecanese islands

General information.

The Dodecanese,  meaning ' the Twelve Islands' in Greek, lie east of the Cyclades and are the remnants of a bridge of land that joined the Peleponnese to Asia Minor millions of years ago. The complex consists of a group of 12 larger and 150 smaller Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, that hug the coast of Turkey. They have a rich history and boast many Byzantine churches and medieval castles. Mostly bare, though not as barren as the Cyclades these islands, at the crossroads of two continents, have seen many invaders, conquerers and occupiers, only reuniting with Greece in 1948. This  gives them a unique cultural history, still apparent today and offers many attractions for the tourist. Known for their mild climate and long tourist season, one can find crowded islands full of tourists as well as secluded areas, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. An ideal area to explore by boat.

Do you want to know more about Dodecanese islands? ...read what Greek National Tourism Organisation says - here

The most well-known island is RHODES. It is the 4 th largest island in Greece, known as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean' and a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. With its marvelous climate and well-organised tourist infrastructure, it is a year round holiday destination and a package tourist paradise in the summer. The marina is located in the main port of Rhodes, which has been a port for 2500 years and is a popular place to pick up a yacht charter .

SYMI, one of the most picturesque islands of the group, has mountains descending steeply to the sea creating wonderful coves to explore.

HALKI, very close to Rhodes is a beautiful, primitive island, not often visited with only one village and many wild and secluded bays.  TILOS is a stony and isolated place ideal for peaceful holidays.

KOS, a large and popular island, was where Hippocrates founded a School of Medicine in the 3 rd Century B.C. It has a fine port, great beaches and many historical sites, which makes it an international tourist centre. Well connected with Europe, it is often a starting point to rent a boat as its sports a modern marina with great facilities.

Strangely coloured NISSYROS, whose black rocks contrast sharply with the white houses and their colourful windowframes. In the middle of the island is a volcano with a huge crater. ASTYPALAIA is the most westerly island, close to the Cyclades. It is narrow, with sandy beaches, windmills and not a lot of tourists.

KALYMNOS, which will always be associated with the traditional sponge-diving boats and the young men risking their lives to find the precious sponges is also famous among rock-climbers for its wild and rocky mountains. This island has a unique character and beauty.

LEROS, with its many bays and the safest harbour in the Dodecanese, Lakki, is a pine-covered and beautiful island, but has remained out of the main tourist route. LEIPSI  is a small, quiet island north of Leros with friendly inhabitants and sheltered coves.

PATMOS island, dominated by the monastery of St John where the Book of Revelations is said to have been written,  is a sacred island that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike.

KARPATHOS is long, narrow and mountainous with a rich folklore that is still maintained and popular hiking trails. KASOS, southernmost of the Dodecanese and close to Karpathos has a strong maritime tradition and is notable for its lack of large scale tourism and the quality of its fish and cheeses.

KASTELORIZO is the eastern-most point of Greece , only 1 mile from the coast of Turkey. A small and rocky island with few residents.

Sailing conditions

An ideal destination for seasoned sailors. One can pick up a bareboat, skippered or crewed boat charter in various ports. The prevailing 'Meltemi' wind blows all summer from the NW. Force 4 to 6. It can reach Force 7 and sometimes blows for days. Gusts are particularly strong off Patmos, Kalymnos, Kos , Nissyros, Tilos, Karpathos and Astypalaia and the open stretch of sea between Astypalaia and Karpathos is challenging. It is recommended to sail in a southerly direction during July and August, or get a one way boat charter as motoring or sailing windward can be exhausting.  In Spring and Autumn the wind is not as strong and blows from the SE.

  • Sailing conditions
  • Getting there

The climate is Mediterranean and temperatures can reach 35ºC/ 95ºF in summer. The sailing conditions mean this location is more suitable for intermediate or advanced sailors.

In the summer, the prevailing wind is the meltemi blowing from the north-west at Force 4-6. In spring and autumn, the wind is calmer and blows from the south-east. Gusts are particularly strong off Patmos, Kalymnos, Kos, Nisyros, Tilos, Karpathos and Astypalea.

In the open water between Astypalea and Karpathos, a large and distributed sea is set up when the meltemi blows for days on end. Although it is possible to go north when the meltemi is blowing, it makes more sense to plan to head south in July and August.

There are direct flights to Rhodes/Kos from all the major European airports, or here are many connecting flights from Athens to Rhodes/Kos everyday. Direct flights from the US to Kos are rare but there are indirect flights from most major US cities.

Transfer time from Rhodes airport to Rhodes Harbour is 40 minutes and transfer time from Kos airport to Kos Marina is 45 minutes.

The Dodecanese

On the eastern side of the Aegean, a remote outpost of Greece, the Dodecanese Islands include Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Symi and Tilos, together with some fourty smaller islets. With the exception of the busier, well-known island hubs of Kos and Rhodes most of the Dodecanese islands offer traditional, blue-and-white fishing villages, 12th century fortresses or tiny fishing harbours, with many quite hard to reach without a yacht. Much quieter than other Greek islands, you will find life laid back and the locals most welcoming to visitors.

Luxury Yacht Charters Rise as Uber Rich Eschew Buying Outright

(Bloomberg) -- Sales of luxury yachts may be down but the world’s megarich have found another, more instantaneous way to get their high seas kicks — chartering a swanky boat instead.

Total chartered days for yachts longer than 50 meters has increased since 2020, according to IYC , a global firm specializing in the sale and charters of luxury yachts. Vessels between 60 to 70 meters posted the most growth last year, at 10%, whereas shorter yachts aren’t nearly as popular as before.

IYC Chief Executive Officer Raphael Sauleau said he’s seeing more customers willing to pay a higher premium for the ultimate ocean experience. Clients are willing to pay more for a so-called advanced provisioning allowance, which covers on-board expenses like food and service, of up to 40% compared to the standard 30% of the total charter fee, he said.

New customers are coming to yachting “with an appetite for larger yachts,” Sauleau said. Compared with smaller vessels, these floating villas come with more privacy, better facilities and a larger crew. A bigger range of large models that’s become available over the past three years has also contributed to higher bookings, he added.

Fraser Yachts , a major international broker, is experiencing a similar phenomenon, receiving 7% more charter bookings for yachts over 60 meters in 2023 versus prior years. Across yachts of all sizes however, the number of charter days reported last year was 19% down on 2021.

It’s a quirk that would seem to chime with the trend of super luxury brands defying a broader luxury slowdown. Hermes International SCA, for example, saw Chinese buyers snap up its products . Hermes typically caters to the most affluent customers, making it more resilient in a challenging luxury goods market.

At the same time, sales of floating palaces are waning, the Superyacht Times said in a report in March. Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.

Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal , the president of luxury travel and lifestyle consultancy Fischer Travel Enterprises, said she’s expecting to help clients charter at least 10 yachts this year. Most of the interest is around megayachts — or yachts above 60 meters — and prices range from about $700,000 to $2 million a week, she said.

Wealthy people may be shying away from outright purchases due to geopolitical worries and global conflicts.

Fear of more widespread fighting in the Middle East and Russian’s war in Ukraine “seem to make some buyers nervous, particularly those in the market for very large new builds,” the Superyacht Times said.
