Our Two Cents Worth

Steamboat NATCHEZ is one of the greatest landmarks of New Orleans… located right on the river outside of the French Quarter. You can either rent out the entire steamboat or have a private area for your wedding and get married as it cruises down the Mississippi. A dance floor is inside with a bar and a jazz band usually plays. Be sure your guests hear the steam calliope which plays before every cruise.

Providing an authentic experience that artfully combines natural beauty with classic New Orleans charm, the Steamboat Natchez creates a truly singular setting for a Southern wedding. Say your “I do’s” on the boat’s beautiful deck at sunset, allowing your guests to enjoy a ceremony brimming with character and picturesque views. The vibrant colors of the sun setting over the Mighty Mississippi is sure to provide your photographer with a boat load of one-of-a-kind photos that will decorate your wedding album forever! Host a stand-up cocktail hour on the deck, enjoying the feel of the boat as it gently glides through the river waters. Retreat to the intimate Captain’s Salon, a stately space complete with columns, “steamboat gothic” chandeliers, Victorian decor, and expansive windows that look out over the roaring river. The Steamboat Natchez’s first class staff will be the living representation of Southern hospitality, providing you with the wedding of your dreams.

Along with taking home the keys to her newly-built abode (designed by HGTV’s Brian Patrick Flynn ), she'll also receive a 2023 Mercedes-Benz, $50,000 from sweepstakes sponsor Viva and a 5-year supply of paper towels. 

Jackson-Polk couldn’t believe she finally won the grand prize after entering all of the network’s home giveaways twice each day over the last few years. In the video above, her nephew Lloyd, his wife Tash and Flynn came over to surprise her with the news. 

"My aunt Phyliss, she's always been a pillar of strength for our family," Lloyd tells Flynn in the clip. "She's always been the one to go to if you needed someone to talk to."

The group then heads over to Jackson-Polk's home and Tash and Lloyd greet her at the door. Once she sees Flynn, she says excitedly, "I know you!"

"I feel on top of the world," Jackson-Polk says as the news sinks in and she hugs her family.

“I never thought this would happen to me. I thought it was a prank until I saw Brian at my door,” she adds in a release from HGTV. “Tears started rolling down my face because it was just so surreal that this was actually happening to me.”

Jackson-Polk is a deaconess at her local church and currently lives in Louisiana with her husband Clark. Her family says she deserves a big win like this since she’s constantly giving back and spreading positivity in her community, per the release.

She was randomly selected from over 73 million entries following the sweepstakes entry period from Oct. 2, 2023 to Nov. 21, 2023.

PEOPLE got an exclusive first look at the Kentucky escape in Sept. 2023 once Flynn completed the final design touches. Built by Twin Spires Remodeling, the home features four bedrooms and two full bathrooms.

Some of Jackson-Polk’s favorite qualities of the home are the yellow door that reminds her of “sunshine” and the upper deck porch where she plans to drink her coffee in the morning. 

The open-concept first floor makes the space perfect for entertaining. Another hidden gem is in the kitchen where a secret door that blends into the midnight blue cabinetry opens into a powder room.

The entire space is outfitted with touches of Southern charm that Flynn said “melds the natural Kentucky landscape with modern, city living.”

He continued, “Louisville is a big, small town, and the HGTV Urban Oasis captures the energy of the city through its nods to local culture and colorful, comfortable spaces that act as a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city."

Louisville is nestled on the Ohio River and is home to the famous Kentucky Derby as well as Whiskey Row, the former hub of the bourbon industry, on historic Main Street.

WDSU Chief Meteorologist Margaret Orr has announced her retirement after 45 years of dedication to the New Orleans community.

As we celebrate her illustrious career, Orr reflected on her six most memorable moments during her time at WDSU.

Coming home:

I remember getting the phone call from Adelina Oliva, the newsroom secretary for WDSU News Director Doug Ramsey. Adelina said, “Would you hold the line for WDSU News Director Doug Ramsey?" I said yes.

Doug Ramsey came on the line and offered me a job as general assignment reporter. This was the phone call I was waiting for. It allowed me to move back home and work in my hometown.

I started two weeks later. I worked through Friday at WBRZ-TV. I moved that weekend into my college roommate's apartment in New Orleans. The weekend was hot as can be.

I started that Monday July 23, 1979. It was a rainy day. I was in the rain all day.

Doug Ramsey asked why my hair looked so bad that day.

Breakfast Edition promotion:

Bill Stanley reached out to me and asked me if I would like to co-host the Breakfast Edition and do the weather.

This opened all kinds of doors and possibilities.

Working the Breakfast Edition with Bill Stanley was so much fun. We did weekly cooking segments. Chef Paul Prudhomme taught me how to cook.

Musicians dropped by to perform or just to talk. People like Ronnie Cole, Ellis Marsalis (who played at my wedding), Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Jimmy Buffet and more.

We did gardening, parenting, making a difference, style show segments. If I wanted to learn about something, we would book an interview.

Hosting the World's Fair Show:

I was asked to co-host the 1984 World’s Fair Show. This was amazing. Alec Gifford and I co-hosted the show. We did the Breakfast Edition in the morning.

I went over to the World’s Fair and taped a few segments and went live from the WDSU studio at the Fair. Then we went back to the studio and did the noon show.

We got really fast at telling good stories. I even had parking at the World’s Fair!

I rode the Gondola, ate amazing food. I loved the mango freeze, the dippy duck and so much more.

I also saw Linda Ronstadt and Willie Nelson perform at the Amphitheater with a Riverboat in the background. The view was unforgettable.

Giving back to the community:

WDSU opened doors that never would have opened if I did not work here. I hate to ask people for money.

I got so loved, so I would ask people for money for Children’s Hospital. I met the most courageous children ever.

They were true warriors. I am so thankful I got to help them. I am so thankful for the lessons they taught me. Courage. Hope. Love. Faith and peace.

Reigning as the Queen of Cotton Candy:

WDSU allowed me to dance in the streets Fat Tuesday as the Queen of Cotton Candy with the Zulu Warriors. How cool is that?!

The calm before, during and after the storm:

WDSU gave me the opportunity to help keep people safe. That is the most important duty as a Meteorologist.

I have been here for every hurricane since it seems the beginning of time! OK. Betsy was my first memory, then Camille. They taught me the true dangers of hurricanes.

I learned how people survived. I looked at Katrina, and knew we had a disaster. Ida was a different disaster. Each hurricane has different characteristics and different impacts. Isaac, Ike, Gustav … I knew them all.

Then came the tornadoes.

WDSU equipped us with the best equipment to tell the weather story. Gave us the tools to go block by block and let everyone know when a tornado would be on their doorstep. Then came the drought, excessive heat, fires and dangerous smog.

Each year we will have different weather patterns with impactful weather. I am thankful to have the equipment we have to do our part when the weather is bad.

When the weather is good, we celebrate the good life, people and festivals of this area. I love the celebrations.

Actor Orlando Bloom sets off on a new adventure as he tackles learning three extreme sports: free diving, rock climbing, and wingsuiting. The outdoor enthusiast challenges himself to push past his limits on this physical and spiritual journey as he works with experts to see exactly what he's capable of outside of his own comfort zone. All the while, he works to learn more about his true self beyond that of his acting capabilities.

'Migration'

A duck family led by Mack Mallard (Kumail Nanjiani) leave the comfort of their cozy New England pond to seek out a new life in Jamaica as their new “flying south” destination. Mack leads his family of wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) and curious kids Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal) on a trek to reach the warmer area, but wind up totally lost in New York City instead, which presents its own set of unique perils the family is ill-equipped for in the first place.
