The Thunder Mesa gold rush brought an elegant riverboat landing and two majestic riverboats, Mark Twain and Molly Brown , navigating the Rivers of the Far West .

As you circle Big Thunder Mountain and Wilderness Island, look out for cascading waterfalls, beautiful wildlife, smuggler's caves and erupting geysers! Wave a quick hello to Old Joe as he fishes, before your grand old-timer steams past Phantom Manor and back to the riverboat landing.

• Mark Twain at Disneyland Paris is a near exact replica of the Disneyland original, built especially for the park by Walt Disney Imagineering with the help of Parisian boat builders. Both boats are actually built to a 5/8 scale , although this isn't consistent throughout the design. A third Mark Twain can be found in Westernland at Tokyo Disneyland, whilst Magic Kingdom in Florida has a different riverboat with a single funnel, named Liberty Belle . Named after the famous American author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , who became a steamboat pilot himself after studying 3,200 miles of the Mississippi for more than two years, the Mark Twain measures 34 metres long by 11 metres wide.
• Molly Brown on the other hand is entirely unique to Disneyland Paris, designed and built exclusively for the park to add extra capacity to the rivers right from day one. Whereas the Rivers of America in California has the Sailing Ship Columbia as a second key vessel , such a boat would have looked out of place in Euro Disneyland's more distinctly gold rush-era Frontierland. And so, almost 40 years on, the Imagineers sought to produce a partner for the stern-wheeler Mark Twain . One key difference is that Molly Brown is a side-wheeler riverboat , having two huge paddle wheels incorporated into each side of its body, and remains the only riverboat to be propelled in this fashion at any of the Disney parks. Named after the "unsinkable" Molly Brown , who survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the boat is based on those which navigated the Sacramento river in northern California during the gold rush.
• A riverboat ride has been an essential element of the Disneyland experience right from the start and, along with the railroad, was one of the first attractions to appear on initial concept maps for the "Mickey Mouse Park" which was to have been built near the Disney studio lot in Burbank, California. When those plans grew into the Disneyland park eventually built in Anaheim in 1955, Walt Disney ended up funding much of the original Mark Twain 's construction out of his own pocket as funds fell short, even mortgaging his holiday home to see the boat completed.

Mark Twain's two motors are capable of pumping out 1,600 kilograms of steam per hour, used to turn the 4.6 metre high paddle wheel at its rear

• The landing stage at Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing is split into two waiting areas. At very busy times, when one fills up, guests are directed into the second area to wait for the next boat. Although waiting times are generally short, you can minimise your wait on the landing by keeping an eye on the amount of people already queueing and returning only when you see the riverboat in sight, arriving back at the dock.
• Although park maps have long shown both the Mark Twain and Molly Brown plying the waters at once, it is a rare sight to see both in operation at the same time — usually only on the busiest of Summer days, when neither boat is being refurbished. Often, the boats take it in turns to operate services over several months whilst one remains in the dry dock for servicing.
• Fully accessible. Wheelchair access is to the lower deck only; upper decks require navigating narrow sets of stairs.

Key Information

Located close to the gates of Phantom Manor, the Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing acts as the embarkation point for two riverboats – the Mark Twain and the Molly Brown. Except on peak days, it is normal for only one of the two boats to be in operation at any one time.

There are 2 riverboats in operation. The “ Mark Twain “, which is a stern-wheeler, is named after the famous American author of “ The Adventures of Tom Sawyer “. The “ Molly Brown ” is a side-wheeler (the only side-wheeler in any Disney Park around the world) and is named after a survivor of the Titanic!

The old fashioned steamers can carry up to 400 passengers per trip on a journey which encircles Big Thunder Mountain for approximately 15 minutes. There is normally only one riverboat running at a time although during the busiest summer months there can be both in operation around the Rivers of the Far West route.

The complete voyage around the Rivers of the Far West takes in many sights which are out of sight for other guests. This is an enjoyable cruise for guests to take to see much more of the park.

Thunder Mesa Riverboats Tips The boarding/landing area is split into 2 areas. One area holds up to 400 people so if this area fills then you will have to join area 2 & await the next boat. The steam boats aren’t actually sailing in the exact but rather pulled along on rails on the bed of the river. If you ask a Cast Member they occasionally allow younger guests onto the “bridge” of the ship to steer the boat & sound the horn! At night time the boats light up in spectacular fashion. Try to catch Phantom Manor or Big Thunder Mountain as a backdrop to photos for added effect.

Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing – Disneyland Attraction

After a visit full of scares and thrills to the attractions at Disneyland Paris , a relaxing cruise is in order. The Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing allowed me to discover the most beautiful landscapes in the West, right down to the most hidden corners. This old boat offers a new view of Frontierland . Two steamboats, the Molly Brown and the Mark Twain, offer the most peaceful cruising experience of the American Wild West.

On this trip, I was reassured by the quiet wilderness. From the railing of the gigantic ship, I had the opportunity to admire the beautiful waterfalls and discover the sandstone cliffs of Big Thunder Mountain. In the distance, between the woods, I could see the smugglers’ caves. The explosive geysers of the Western Deserts are equally impressive. Form Comstock, a veritable mushroom town, awaits visitors.

As a result, the story came back into my head, in the midst of contemplation, as I sailed along. Thunder Mesa is the pure product of the gold rush that worked its magic from 1849 to 1880. It has become a ghost town inhabited by a few cowboys. Not far away, in the Western River Line, two boats continue to operate. They transport travelers wishing to discover the American West on the Rivers of the Far West.

The journey that this ride has brought me nothing but happiness and peace of mind. It’s an attraction I highly recommend to visitors who want to recharge their batteries and discover a different side of Disneyland.

Covered Disney Ship on Display as Attraction Shuts Down

in Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris had a few attractions closed today for refurbishment. Both Disneyland Park and Walt Disney World Studios Park are currently undergoing some big changes. The 30th anniversary is around the corner for Disneyland Paris Resort, which is why so many of the attractions, the classic Disneyland Hotel, and full-on lands such as Fantasyland are being updated. Even Sleeping Beauty Castle has seen a big change.

At the moment, these are the attractions that are currently closed down at Disneyland Park.

The Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing will see the biggest shutdown, and although we do not yet know when the riverboats will set sail with Guests once again, we can see that the closure will last through to March at the earliest. Disneyland Paris has not updated their calendar past then at this time.

Now, thanks to DLP Report (@DLPReport) we can see that the Mark Twain Riverboat from Frontierland has finally left the dry down as the Molly Brown will head in for refurbishment. Now, Guests can look at a tarp-covered Mark Twain boat. It is not certain where the boat will go and if Disney plans to leave it exposed to Guests during the entire refurbishment.

From the looks of it, we cannot tell if the Mark Twain has had any major changes made to it just yet.

At Disneyland Paris,  lots of changes are coming to Walt Disney Studios and their Disneyland Park, with the 30th anniversary just months away.  Walt Disney Studios  is adding a massive addition that will include  Star Wars , Marvel, and  Frozen,  as well as their very own Avengers Campus, which will be the first section to open in the Park.

We have recently seen Disney’s Sequoia Lodge reopen while the Disneyland Paris Resort continues to undergo a refurbishment. On top of that, we have seen  price increases for pins  and stunning snowfalls! The Disneyland Paris app has also changed; read  more on that here . Disney Stars on Parade is also back at Disneyland Park now that the holidays are over! Guests looking to skip the line can also purchase Premier Access which is a pay-per-ride system that allows Guests to skip the standby line.

Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing is an attraction located in the Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris.

The Frontierland area of Disneyland Park has the unique distinction of featuring two riverboats, Mark Twain and Molly Brown. Each riverboat features a recorded conversation between the Captain and Mark Twain or Molly Brown. Since the storyline takes place in the fictional town of Thunder Mesa, most of the spiel deals with the sights of Big Thunder Mountain, Phantom Manor, Wilderness Island, Smuggler's Cove, an old snoring fisherman, Yellowstone National Park geysers, dinosaur remains and more. The two river boats are:

• Mark Twain, based on the Anaheim Park's original riverboat, a sternwheeler.
• Molly Brown, named for Titanic-survivor Molly Brown. This boat is the only sidewheeler in a Disney Park.

On May 16, 2005, Molly Brown's engine overheated as the boat rounded the corner at the back of the Rivers of the Far West. Although there was no visible fire, smoke damaged the ship and her engines, rendering her immobile. Guests were ferried ashore by the River Rogue Keelboats. The engine system was badly damaged and Molly Brown was out of operation for many months, while Mark Twain's ongoing refurbishment at the dry dock was finished.

In September 2005, Molly Brown was moved to the dry dock, and in March 2006, Mark Twain resumed operation from Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing. It was not until September that Molly Brown's long refurbishment finally began, and was completed in late April 2007.

Despite the refurbishment, Molly Brown had to be rebuilt again in 2010 from scratch. On March 25, 2011, she was back in business, with a new recording of Molly Brown's speech in English, which used to be in French. The Mark Twain hasn't operated since 2011 and has spent most of that time in dry dock.

• Molly Brown, named for Titanic-survivor Molly Brown, is the only sidewheeler in a Disney Park.
• On May 16, 2005, Molly Brown's engine overheated as the boat rounded the corner at the back of the Rivers of the Far West. Although there was no visible fire, smoke damaged the ship and her engines, rendering her immobile. Guests were ferried ashore by the River Rogue Keelboats. The engine system was badly damaged and Molly Brown remained out of operation for many months, while Mark Twain's ongoing refurbishment at the dry dock was finished.

In September 2005, Molly Brown was moved to the dry dock, and in March 2006, Mark Twain finally resumed operation from Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing. However, it was not until September that Molly Brown's long refurbishment finally began, and was completed in late April 2007.

Yet, in 2010, Molly Brown had to be rebuilt from scratch. On March 25, 2011, she was back in business, with a new recording of Molly Brown's speech in English, which used to be in French. The Mark Twain hasn’t operated since 2011, and has spent most of that time sitting in dry dock.

Hop aboard an old paddle steamer and enjoy a leisurely riverboat ride around the best of the Old West.

Le nom du bateau provient d'une survivante du Titanic du nom de Margaret Brown surnommée Molly après son décès. Tout au long du parcours sur les rivers of the farwest , son témoignage avec les éléments marquants de sa vie, est diffusé par les haut-parleurs du bord.

À la différence du Mark Twain , qui est un stern wheeler (aube en poupe), le Molly brown est un side wheeler (roues situées sur chaque bord du bateau)

Faits divers

Le 16 mai 2005 , la chaudière du Molly Brown surchauffa à mi-chemin de son parcours. Aucun incendie ne fut visible mais les fumées endommagèrent le bateau et les moteurs, entraînant son arrêt. Les visiteurs furent transbordés à bord des River Rogue Keelboats afin d'être évacués. Cet incident provoqua d'importants dégâts et le bateau fut immobilisé de nombreux mois tandis que le Mark Twain était déjà en réparation. Aucune croisière ne fut possible pendant cette période. Le Mark Twain fut sorti de la cale sèche en septembre 2005 pour laisser la place au Molly Brown , mais ne reprit les croisières qu'en mars 2006. Les réparations du Molly Brown débutèrent en septembre 2006 et se sont terminées en avril 2007 [1] , permettant une reprise de sa navigation autour de Big Thunder Mountain à la fin juin 2007 [2] . Le 25 mars 2011 , le Molly Brown sortant de réhabilitation, a été inauguré à nouveau, arborant de nouvelles couleurs (les tons rouges remplaçant désormais les tons bleu-vert).
