Dale Earnhardt’s $4 Million Yacht Called "Sunday Money" Has All the Bells and Whistles

Several months before the 2001 Daytona 500, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. had commissioned an 100-foot Hatteras Yacht to replace his 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY. The Intimidator was very much involved with the entire design process, selecting the interior, the layout, and a host of other features. As he sat behind the wheel of the No. 3 Goodwrench Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion's massive yacht was only about a few more weeks away from completion. Unfortunately, he would never get to set sail in the sea cruiser, as we all know what happened that tragic day on February 18, 2001.

Now, more than 15 years after the yacht's commissioning, it is available for purchase for a cool $4.2 million. Named the Sunday Money — taking its name from a song that Earnhardt wrote along with country music duo Brooks and Dunn — the Detroit Diesel model is currently housed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and has been on the market for more than a year.

With five bedrooms, a refitted interior and engine room, an updated paint job, top-of-the-line electronics, and even a full-service custom "sunken" bar, the Sunday Money is luxury at its finest. Just check out some of the specs on this beauty.

  • Cruising Speed: 18 kn
  • Beam: 22?5"
  • Hull Material: Composite
  • Max Draft: 6?1"
  • Fuel Tank: 1 x 5025|gallon
  • Fresh Water: 1 x 840|gallon
  • Holding: 1 x 370|gallon
  • Max Passengers: 8
  • Single Berths: 2
  • Double Berths: 4

"I'm privileged to present to you Sunday Money. She is arguably the most famous 100' Hatteras Motor Yacht to date. With her timeless lines, recent refit and unprecedented seaworthiness she has to be on the top of every yacht buyers list," yacht broker Denison Yachting says in the official listing for the yacht.

While Earnhardt had two yachts to his name — a sport-fishing yacht called "Intimidator," now owned by his widow, Teresa Earnhardt, and the 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY that's currently on the market for $390,000 — it's a shame he never got to enjoy what probably would have been his dream boat.

Here's hoping that whoever owns Dale Earnhardt's yacht next gets some quality use out of it.

Now this is a yacht fit for a legend.

Dale Earnhardt Sr.   very tragically passed away right before the completion of his massive yacht he named “Sunday Money,” which is a 2001 model, 100-ft. Hatteras with five staterooms and a Detroit Diesel engine.

It was formerly located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was named for the song country duo Brooks & Dunn actually wrote with Dale Sr. , and was later recorded for the album  The Dale Earnhardt Winston Cup Collection .

That specific record was done in conjunction with his 1993 NASCAR Cup Series Championship (his sixth title out of seven overall) and played at the awards banquet to honor him that year.

Anywho, according the Charlotte Observer , the yacht was built to replace a 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY that Sr. used for deep-sea fishing, and it is such a shame he never got to take it out into the open waters, as he sadly passed away on February 18th, 2001 during a final-lap collision in the Daytona 500.

Hatteras Yachts Customer Service Manager Baird Paschal told the outlet that back in the day, it was a massive deal when Dale Earnhardt paid a visit to their shop on the coast in New Bern, North Carolina:

“NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn’t make a difference if you were a man or a woman.

Miss America came one time and didn’t get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did.”

Ya gotta love it…

And though “Sunday Money” was top-of-the-line with all the premium features and bells and whistles when it was completed in 2001, it has since been updated with all new electronics, new bottom paint and prop speed, in addition to the interior has also been remodeled.

Denison Yachting listed the vessel for 4.2 million in 2018, and the incredible ship also features a full-service custom “sunken” bar, alfresco dining & a lounge area.

They shared a very high-quality walkthrough video of the entire yacht at the time, and it’s downright gorgeous.

I know Dale Sr. would’ve absolutely lived his best life taking fishing adventures on “Sunday Money,” and it’s sweet to see they kept that “3” flag flying at the front to honor his memory.

You can watch the whole video here:

The song “Sunday Money” is nearly impossible to find anywhere in its entirety these days unfortunately, but is a whole song about the life of Dale Sr. and what a badass driver he was.

Dale Earnhardt's Yacht is For Sale and it Has an Incredible Country Music Connection

Over 18 years ago, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt  commissioned a 100-foot yacht.  Earnhardt personally designed the luxury watercraft, deemed Sunday Money, but sadly never got to enjoy it. The racing icon died on February 18, 2001 in a final-lap collision in the Daytona 500.

Today the yacht is up for sale for $4.2 million and features five bedrooms , a full-service bar and more.

Watch the video below for an inside look at the yacht.

As if the yacht wasn't already impressive enough, the watercraft was actually named for a song Earnhardt penned with country duo  Brooks and Dunn.   "Sunday Money" was originally recorded for the Dale Earnhardt Winston Cup Collection , a 1995 compilation album that also included Alan Jackson , Diamond Rio , Radney Roster and more.

A rare version of the song includes an extra verse that gives an inside look at Earnhardt's life off the race track.

Dale Earnhardt's Mansion of a Yacht Could Be Yours for $4.2 Million

While the word “ yacht ” isn’t exactly synonymous with the image of “old-school, rough, tough, good-ol’-boy” NASCAR drivers that’s often painted, even the most famous of those, the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. , had a few. One of those yachts, a custom-built boat called “ Sunday Money ,” is up for sale.

Suggested Reading

But it’ll take a bit more than just Sunday money to buy this one. At $4.2 million, it’ll probably take all of the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday money you can collect, and then some. The listing is also $200,000 higher than what the 9,802-square-foot North Carolina mansion that acted as Ricky Bobby’s home in Talladega Nights sold for last year .

Perhaps you could petition the sweet Lord Baby Jesus for more days in the week.

Sunday Money is one of several yachts Earnhardt had, according to a backstory on the listing from the Charlotte Observer , which mentioned two others that he used for fishing—a 1989 yacht Earnhardt bought used that’s currently listed for $390,000 , and one that goes by Earnhardt’s “Intimidator” nickname and is still owned by Earnhardt’s widow , Teresa Earnhardt. But Earnhardt never really got to enjoy the multi-million-dollar Sunday Money , according to the Observer, since his fatal 2001 Daytona 500 wreck came before it was completed.

Related Content

The yacht was “close to completion” when Earnhardt died, a former Hatteras Yachts captain told the Observer, and it’s full of Earnhardt’s custom touches despite going through two subsequent owners.

It’s hard to tell what those touches might be in photos, since the yacht just looks like a huge, floating mansion, but yacht broker Mike Fine broke it all down for the Observer:

A subsequent owner, whom The Trident did not name, kept features specifically to recognize Earnhardt’s role in the history of the yacht. Those include its original Makore fiddleback woodwork “and Earnhardt’s custom compass rose design found in the flooring and several window etches,” according to the publication. Fine said all of the Earnhardts’ “subtle nuances on the boat have not been touched,” from the peninsula shape of the galley to the interior African walnut and marble countertops. The original silver remains, including plates with a cursive “D” for Earnhardt’s first name, Fine said, and a custom Snap-on tool box in the engine room.

There’s also a giant, black No. 3 flag mounted on the front and an American flag on the back, in case there was any doubt about whose yacht this originally was.

Given the choice between this $4.2-million water mansion or the $4-million, 10,000-square-foot actual mansion from Talladega Nights and their moderate ties to NASCAR, it seems only obvious which is the better deal—the one with more space and no potential to meet one of many disastrous fates at sea.

But, of course, if you have this kind of cash, there’s probably no need to choose just one anyway.

Yacht owner keeps NASCAR driver’s spirit alive

Typically, when a yacht changes hands, the yacht gets renamed. Not so with M/Y Sunday Money , a custom 2001 100-foot Hatteras on display in the show this week. The current owner kept the name to “maintain the spirit of the yacht,” said Sean Johnston, mate/engineer.

Spirit may be an appropriate word as the yacht was built by Dale Earnhardt, the seasoned NASCAR race car driver who passed away in 2001.

And contrary to local lore, it is not — and never was — owned by his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt’s wife, Teresa Earnhardt, owned it after his death.

With some experience in smaller scale race cars and yachts himself, the current owner approached M/Y Sunday Money as a piece of history and has opted to retain it as best he could. Original Fiddleback Makore woodwork adorns the interior, as does Earnhardt’s custom compass rose design found in the flooring and several window etches.

The feel of the track is even evident with the semi-oval granite dinette, a nod to some of the famous NASCAR short tracks.

Several upgrades were incorporated in 2012 including wing control stations, stabilizers and enclosing the flybridge deck with canvas for all-season cruising.

“It’s an awesome sea boat, like a tank,” Johnston said. M/Y Sunday Money recently cruised throughout the Bahamas all the way to the out islands, as well as through the northeast U.S.

This is not the only yacht owned or once owned by a NASCAR driver or team owner. Driver Jeff Gordon owns the 106-foot Lazzara M/Y 24 Karat ; team owner Rick Hendricks has had several yachts and sportfishers, including the 164-foot Trinity M/Y Wheels ; and Trinity Yachts chairman Felix Sabates also is a NASCAR team owner.

Johnston did add that the owner keeps NASCAR trinkets onboard M/Y Sunday Money as well as a few mats with the famous No. 3 car (Earnhardt’s car) as a token to the history.

Named for the day when NASCAR drivers win their prizes, M/Y Sunday Money is docked this Sunday at the show. Walk by her; you just may feel the spirit.

Blog | Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Yacht Just Hit the Market

Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a NASCAR career like few others. His most thrilling victory came in 1998, when, at the age of 47, Earnhardt won the Daytona 500. Tragically, just three years later, that legendary race would also be the cause of his untimely death. Rounding the final lap of the now-infamous 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt was in 3rd place – when, at 180 mph, he grazed one car and then fully collided with another, causing him to careen head-on into the outside retaining wall. He was killed on impact. Dale Earnhardt Jr., unaware of the crash that had just taken his father’s life, finished in 2nd place.

At that moment in time, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was in the midst of building the yacht of his dreams – but, like Steve Jobs, he would not live to see her to completion. That dream yacht, a 2001 100′ Hatteras, has just hit the market at an asking price of $4.2 million. She appears to be in excellent shape, having undergone a full interior, exterior and mechanical refit in 2012. Her electronics, teak and other areas have been updated far more recently.

Hints of the man who commissioned her are still there too – from the letter “D”, written in cursive, found throughout the yacht, to the black #3 Earnhardt flag flying on the bow. Yet it’s the name of this Hatteras that is perhaps the truest indication of the man who built her – SUNDAY MONEY. After all, as the winner of 76 Winston Cup races, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a man who knew a thing or two about picking up a big check on race day.

This is pretty interesting especially if you’re into boats, and/or were a Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan.

I did some digging up on this yacht, and found out Sr. built the yacht.

TheDrive.com reports, "The seven-time NASCAR champ ordered the luxo-barge just before his death at the 2001 Daytona 500 . . . Earnhardt never sailed the boat as it wasn't completed until after his death, but through two additional owners, the yacht retains several Earnhardt-esque touches."

The website also states, "Sunday Money has been on the market for more than 400 days. According to a  Charlotte Observer article , the sea vessel was built to replace a 1989 Hatteras 74 CPMY that also is  on the market for $390,000 . The late NASCAR legend used that yacht for deep-sea fishing. 'NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn't make a difference if you were a man or a woman. Miss America came one time and didn't get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did," Hatteras Yachts Customer Service Manager Baird Paschal told the  Charlotte Observer , recalling Earnhardt's visits. Another sport-fishing yacht, called "Intimidator," is still owned by Earnhardt's widow, Teresa Earnhardt.'" (TheDrive.com)

Dale Earnhardt Sr. Hatteras Yacht For Sale With Denison

Dale Earnhardt Sr. Hatteras Yacht For Sale With Denison

January 25, 2019 2:17 pm

Nascar legend’s former 100′ motoryacht could be yours.

SUNDAY MONEY , the 100-foot Hatteras yacht that NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. had custom-built but never got to enjoy, can be yours for $4.2 million.

That’s what Earnhardt’s dream boat lists for on national yacht broker sites.

Earnhardt selected the layout, interior and other features for the yacht, which took more than a year to build, Avery Brooks, associate brand manager for Hatteras Yachts of New Bern, told The Charlotte Observer in a phone interview Wednesday.

Earnhardt died in a last-lap crash at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 18, 2001.

The yacht “was close to completion” when Earnhardt died, former Hatteras Yachts Captain Gary McKeel told the Observer in a phone interview Thursday.

About a month after the Daytona 500, McKeel said, he joined Earnhardt’s boat captain, Terry Jones, in piloting the yacht from New Bern to Dale and Teresa Earnhardt’s marina slip in Palm Beach, Fla. “Two or three guys from the (Hatteras Yachts) factory” were also aboard, according to McKeel.

McKeel said he and the other Hatteras Yachts employees were then flown back to North Carolina on Dale Earnhardt’s private jet.

The yacht was hand-built to replace an older, 70-foot Hatteras motor yacht that Dale Earnhardt bought used and had refitted, according to Brooks. That yacht also was named SUNDAY MONEY, she said.

Earnhardt also had a 50-foot sport fishing yacht named The Intimidator, Brooks said. That was Earnhardt’s most famous racing nickname. Teresa Earnhardt still owns the sport fishing yacht, berthed at Cable Marine in Fort Lauderdale, Brooks said.

‘Down-To-Earth’ Despite Star Status Baird Paschal, Hatteras Yachts customer service manager, recalled in an interview Thursday how Earnhardt was such a “down-to-earth person” despite his celebrity status.

“NASCAR in those days was a big deal here, and it didn’t make a difference if you were a man or a woman,” Paschal said. “Miss America came one time and didn’t get nearly the attention Dale Earnhardt did” from the Hatteras Yachts workforce, which then numbered 700 to a thousand, he said.

On one of his visits to Hatteras Yachts, Paschal recalled, the seven-time Cup champion gave a Dale Earnhardt racing T-shirt to every worker. He then took the time to sign each shirt when the workers lined up for his autograph, Paschal said.

Hatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Salon

Earnhardt ‘Touches’ Remain Many of the custom features Dale and Teresa Earnhardt incorporated into the yacht remain, despite two subsequent owners, Mike Fine of Denison Yachting , a longtime yacht broker founded in Florida, told the Observer on Thursday.

Fine is the broker for the third and latest owner of the yacht, who he said wishes to remain anonymous. Fine is based in Montauk, Long Island, N.Y. , where he said the owner lives. Sunday Money summers there and winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fine said.

SUNDAY MONEY is among only three such 100-foot Hatteras yachts for sale on the U.S. market, according to Denison Yachting and other longtime U.S. yacht brokers, such as Galati Yacht Sales and Atlantic Yacht & Ship Inc.

The other two yachts are Vesper of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., which is a 2002 version selling for $3 million, and Supernova of Fort Lauderdale, built in 2003 on the market for $3.4 million, according to their listings on those and other yacht broker sites.

Hatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Galley

Teresa Earnhardt eventually sold SUNDAY MONEY, according to a 2015 article in The Trident, a nautical news publication.

SuHatteras Yacht Sunday Money For Sale Staterooms

Flag On The Bow Honors Earnhardt’s Role According to its listing and a Denison Yachting video of Sunday Money, the yacht also features:

▪ Two 1,850-horsepower Detroit Diesel Corp. engines.

▪ The galley’s crystal and china displays, two Sub-Zero refrigerators-freezers and other amenities.

▪ A “wide-open” aft deck on the bridge that is “built for lounging,” according to Denison Yachting’s video.

▪ Five state rooms.

▪ Formal dining area with burl wood table that seats eight.

▪ Step-down, full-service bar in the salon.

The yacht underwent a 2012 refit with everything from a new transom and digital stabilizer to new wireless networking and carpets, according to the yacht’s listing.

Denison Yachting’s SUNDAY MONEY YouTube video makes no mention of Earnhardt’s past ownership. Yet a No. 3 Dale Earnhardt flag flaps in the breeze on the bow of the yacht at the end of the 9-minute, 31-second video.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s ‘Oddest’ Car That He Owns Is a Boat

NASCAR  legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has spent most of his life racing cars, from his trademark No. 88 Chevrolet to the vehicles he rode growing up in North Carolina.

The two-time Daytona 500 champion loves cars, and he inherited that from his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr. But of all the cars he’s collected over the years, there is one the iconic driver called his “oddest.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. calls his 1977 Cutlass a ‘boat’

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2019.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s classic car collection naturally includes vehicles from either before he was born in 1974 or that were popular when he was a child.

The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass is one of those cars. In a 2014 interview with Men’s Journal , the racing legend showed off a black Cutlass and referred to it as a “boat.” However, he also acknowledged its impact on NASCAR’s history.

“Back in ’78, ’79, and 1980, that was the car to have if you wanted to be competitive in the Daytona 500.” Dale Earnhardt Jr.

According to Men’s Journal, eight of the top ten starters at the 1980 Daytona 500 drove Cutlasses. Earnhardt admitted he didn’t love the car and how it operated.

What was the Oldsmobile Cutlass?

#StolenVehicleAlert ? 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham stolen from Baton Rouge, LA, on December 25, 2020. Please email [email protected] if you've seen this car. pic.twitter.com/cNfso7rjj0 — Hagerty (@Hagerty) March 10, 2021

General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Cutlass in 1961, over a decade before Earnhardt Jr. entered the world.

A popular muscle car-turned-personal luxury car, the Cutlass remained in for nearly three decades. The Oldsmobile division later introduced several spinoffs, including the Cutlass Calais compact and the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon.

Oldsmobile replaced the Cutlass with the Achieva in 1992. However, the Cutlass name returned in 1997. Two years later, the Cutlass ceased production for good.

Earnhardt has used his sizable net worth on his car collection

We went with @Nationwide88 to see one of the classic @ChevyTrucks in @DaleJr 's collection, a 1948 TK Pickup! https://t.co/qniOtEc8nX — Team Chevy (@TeamChevy) January 6, 2016

Forbes  valued Earnhardt Jr.’s career earnings at $410 million, which is more than enough for him to collect as many cars as he wants.

The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass is only one of those vintage vehicles, which at least hit the open market when Earnhardt was alive. Older cars in Earnhardt’s collection include a 1967 Camaro and a 1976 Laguna.

The racing legend also owns a 1948 TK pickup truck, one with interesting design choices. The truck’s exterior is teal with signs of rust and what he referred to as “imperfections.” However, a quick glance at the interior shows a vehicle with a rebuilt drivetrain and a new chassis.

If Earnhardt is smart, he’ll make sure the cars are safe and protected from any harm. He won’t want to end up like baseball legend Reggie Jackson , who once lost over 30 classic cars in a warehouse fire.

Came across a news piece on Jalopnik regarding Dale Earnhardt's yacht, a 100' Hatteras appropriately named "Sunday Money". I posted a pic of the boat in the Yacht Flocking thread (circa 2007) and posed the question to YF readers "what's the meaning of the name?" Several identified the boat, which explained the name. Apparently it favors turning to port. https://jalopnik.com/dale-earnhardts-mansion-of-a-yacht-could-be-yours-for-1832118481 ***

Yes. I saw it in Harbor Island a few weeks ago. It is still in excellent shape. Ernhardt also had a 50' Hatteras SF, also kept in excellent shape and it's been sitting in the covered in the water slips at Cable Marine forever. I forget the name of that one too...…..maybe The heartbeat......or The Intimidator........or something along those lines.

After he passed his wife Teresa kept the Hatteras for awhile but I believe she sold it after a few years. Apparently, The company of the late driver is very aggressive in branding and preserving the Dale Earnhardt name and legacy so I'm surprised that the name Sunday Money wasn't reserved. Bill France Jr. started a company called NASCAR Marine in the early 90's that had all the family vessels under one umbrella in Daytona that had shore side support for Hi Banx and several others family owned vessels. Quite a few NASCAR drivers jumped on the yachting bandwagon through the exposure from Felix Sabates Victory Lanes, When you would pass that little marina on the ICW in Daytona during the season you would see boats named Finish line, Checkers or Wreckers, 24 Karrott, Speed Deed etc. Click to expand...

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – FEBRUARY 13: Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the #88 Nationwide Chevrolet, looks on in the garage area during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 13, 2016 in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

For the ‘Pied Piper of Daytona’, expensive indulgences aren’t something new. For starters, he’d built an expansive 300-acre Old Western town near a place where he used to live as a bachelor. With its own saloon that had a functioning bar, a tavern that he’d named ‘Whiskey River’, a chapel and a jail (For whatever reason), it was quite the sumptuous affair. Quoting the town’s purpose, he had said, “I wanted a place for me and my friends to hang out and I didn’t want to destroy my house. We would drink a lot of beer and hang out and have fun and stay up all night.”

Again, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. bought a 3300 sq-ft house back in 2009, it did not seem extraordinary. However, upon closer inspection, one would get baffled by the theme that the house was designed with. The house looked similar to a pirate ship containing the iconic skull-crossbones emblem. Earnhardt Jr. also took the decor to the next level by incorporating the wheel of a pirate ship and fishnets hanging from ropes. Such an extravagant purchase cost him a staggering $2.4 million.

While he did sell off the property in 2020, his latest disclosure shows that he is not yet done trying his hand in luxuries outside of the track.

Years have passed since then and as Dale Jr. looked ready for round two, it appears a slight snag has hit him. Discussing the consideration of purchasing a yacht, he expressed the cruel awakening that he faced to his associate Mike Davis on their podcast, ‘Dale Jr. Download’. Revealing how he’d found out about the expenses of maintaining them, he said, “ You can buy a restored boat, an old yacht, for very cheap. But it is gonna cost you a shit ton of money when something breaks. (…) But even a newer model… even a used newer model, just the expense! I was like ‘Okay, you buy it then what? So I did a little digging. Asked some questions of some people and I was like ‘Holy smokes!”

In 2001, NASCAR lost one of its greatest drivers when Dale Earnhardt Sr. hit the wall at the Daytona International Speedway. Months before the devastating accident that cost him his life, Senior had ordered a luxurious yacht for which he’d himself selected the layout, interior design and other features. Named “Sunday Money,” the 100-foot yacht was nothing short of a sea mansion in its plans. But before the man could get a chance to take a ride on what he had created with such care and planning, his time had to end.

PHOENIX, AZ — November 6, 1999: Although he finished second to Jeff Gordon in the Outback Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (L) and his dad Dale Earnhardt (R) had plenty of reason to celebrate, as the younger Earnhardt clinched the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series championship even though there was still one race to run the following week at Homestead-Miami Speedway. With Dale Sr.’s wife eventually selling Sunday Money, his son wanting to purchase a yacht and live the life that his father had envisioned makes all the more sense.

However, Dale Jr. put the blame on YouTube for his interest in yachts, saying, “I somehow got myself on this algorithm where my YouTube is sending me boat videos. Like, ‘Hey! This boat is for sale. Look at this boat. In this boat…’ You know what I’m saying?” The fact that his father never got aboard the ,”Sunday Money” could be pulling a few strings in his heart.

Regardless of the cause, should Junior end up making the purchase, his old man would surely be looking down, smiling at him. What are your views on the story? Do share with us below.

NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. trades need for speed for ... a camper?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Retired NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. may have shocked the racing world on Saturday with news that he’s trading his need for speed for a camping trailer.

“#88 is full throttle to campfire nights ,” Camping World posted Saturday morning on X, the former Twitter.

Earnhardt had just announced on X that he’d bought a Cougar luxury travel trailer that he, wife, Amy, and daughters Isla Rose and Nicole Lorraine will hit the road in soon.

“Lots of consideration on what was right for my family,” Earnhardt said on X. “So many great options. Gonna go make some memories this year in our @CampingWorld RV.”

Earnhardt bought a 2024 Keystone Cougar 364BHL Midnight Edition, Camping World said on X.

The camper retails for about $85,000. High-end Cougar models typically include two bedroom suites and indoor and outdoor kitchens and showers.

By Saturday afternoon, Earnhardt’s post received 192,000 views and 3,400 likes, all congratulating him on the purchase and his plans.

“Any advice on how to convince my wife?” a fan from Miami, Florida, posted.

“That’s nicer than my house lol,” another man said.

“Enjoy the journey and destination!!” a woman posted.

Fans voted Earnhardt Most Popular Driver for 15 years before he retired from the track at the end of the 2017 season.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner has been a racing analyst for NBC ever since, although his contract with the network is up. He recently quipped that he’s unemployed as he works to return to the booth .

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s recent guest recalls safety advancements in NASCAR following Dale Sr.'s tragic death

G ary Nelson, a recent guest on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s podcast, discussed the safety improvements NASCAR made following the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. He mentioned that after Earnhardt's accident at the Daytona racetrack, NASCAR undertook several updates to enhance driver safety. He also provided insights into the detailed processes and considerations behind these changes.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. lost his life in a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 , colliding with a retaining wall after an encounter with Sterling Marlin and Ken Schrader. He was declared dead shortly afterward due to a basilar skull fracture, which occurred instantly. His death marked the fourth such incident in NASCAR within eight months, following the deaths of Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr., and Tony Roper, all of whom also succumbed to basilar skull fractures.

Following Dale Earnhardt Sr. 's accident, NASCAR ramped up its safety initiatives. The sport mandated head-and-neck restraints, introduced SAFER barriers on oval tracks, enforced stricter inspection protocols for seats and seat belts, and developed both a roof-hatch escape system and the Car of Tomorrow, which laid the groundwork for the Next Gen race car designed with enhanced driver safety features. Gary Nelson discussed these changes on The Dale Jr Download, explaining:

"When your dad's accident happened at Daytona We were on our way. So we had the restraint system started. with John. And we had... Started on the soft wall of study. We had the most data on your dad's accident. [...] The biggest part of safety is going to be 65% of your work should be on restrained systems. You should restrain the driver in the car 65% of safety is to hold the driver tightly in the car."
"The seats got much better, the belts got much better. [...] 25% was the wall. What you hear should move a little bit. You lower the G force the driver feels by 25% if what he hits moves. And that left 10% for whole rest of the car, that includes, fire, intrusion bumpers. And so we developed the safer wall."

Since implementing these safety enhancements, NASCAR has not experienced any fatalities related to car safety issues.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s guest, Gary Nelson recalls tragic losses during his tenure

During his appearance on Dale Earnhardt Jr. 's podcast, Gary Nelson spoke about the reality of his tenure from 1991 to 2001 when NASCAR faced numerous tragedies. He shared a list he had compiled, detailing the names of 10 drivers who died in that decade. Nelson solemnly recounted:

"I brought a list, it's not a good list. It's 10 drivers that lost their lives driving NASCAR cars, from 1991 to 2001. [...]
- Grant Adcox
- JD McDuffie
- John Nemechek
- Rodney Orr
- Neil Bonnett
- Clifford Allison
- Adam Petty
- Kenny Irwin
- Tony Roper
- Dale Earnhardt"

Nelson also touched on the deep impact these losses had on the racing community. He particularly remembered Rodney Orr, mentioning a haunting interaction just moments before Orr's fatal accident during a practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500, illustrating the suddenness and severity of such tragic events.

Sports | Connor Hall looks to add second Hampton Heat victory to his stock car racing dream season

Connor Hall, right, and Nelson Motorsports owner Barry Nelson celebrate after Hall's victory in a thrilling CARS Tour race June 1 at Langley Speedway. COURTESY OF CONNOR HALL

How does it get better than a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series national championship, fueled in large part by 14 Late Model victories on the way to a first division title at Langley Speedway?

Here’s how. Hall is not only steamrolling toward a repeat national championship, he leads the standings on the CARS Tour — a prestigious NASCAR feeder series — and is on top of the Virginia Triple Crown standings after winning the SoBo 200 at South Boston Speedway.

Life is good again at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway. Hall has won seven of eight Late Model starts there — a big chunk in his national points lead — and his win in a thrilling three-way duel to the finish of the CARS Tour race in June created a national sensation.

“That was one hell of a show @CARSTour,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted on X.

Connor Hall

Life can get even better should Hall win the Hampton Heat 200 Saturday at Langley. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is among 38 entrants for the Heat, the second leg of the Triple Crown (the fall Martinsville race is third) and a trophy Hall would dearly love to win following two second-places (2023 included) since his 2019 victory.

“C.E. Falk and (defending champion) Brenden Queen are the only drivers to win multiple Hampton Heats, so I’d like to add my name to that list,” Hall said. “Of course we’d like as close an effort as possible, so a first, second or third finish would position us well for the Triple Crown, but we’re there to win.”

Even with his winning percentage of 88 at Langley this season, a repeat division championship there is out because of his CARS Tour commitments. But his eight wins in nine tries (counting the CARS race) show he is still master of the 4/10ths-of-a-mile oval and perhaps the favorite Saturday.

“You definitely have to build a setup/foundation around a lot of stability, because Langley is very hot, greasy and loose,” he said. “So the tires slide, and the more they do, the harder you are on them.

“That makes throttle control, stability and tire management, all similar, the keys to success.”

Seeking those keeps him in the garage hour after hour when he’s not traveling the East Coast from Massachusetts to North Carolina for Blue Water Yacht Sales. So, while he says it would be cool to achieve the trifecta of a national championship, CARS Tour title and state Triple Crown, he rarely looks beyond the next turn of the wrench.

“The possibility is there, but I don’t think like that,” he said. “I’m just trying to stay dedicated to the day-to-day work and, if it happens, we can celebrate and talk about it later.”

Hall doesn’t mind discussing what has put him in position to nab a trio of titles no one else has won in a single season. He credits crew chief Matthew Eshleman and a strong team at Nelson Motorsports — amply funded by Barry Nelson Auto and Towne Bank — in addition to his continuing growth as a driver.

“We’re finally starting to put a lot of these puzzle pieces together I’ve struggled with throughout the years, and I’m probably maturing a little bit,” he said. “The opportunity Barry Nelson has given me is a great one, and I’m just trying to put everything together and come out with a bang.”
