Phoenix 4 2020 10r Every new design presents a designer with options to consider and directions to go. After a ten year gap from the design of the P3, all 10r’s had adopted the deep keel, light weight approach. Although it did seem to work, I after the P5 I thought that the Phoenix 4 design although fast went in the wrong direction. I always have thought about what I should have done. So this is P4- 2020, with 2020 hindsight is the result.

LOA 1550mm LWL 1250mm BOA 200mm BWL 180mm, 4.2kg ballast on 600mm Draught and P1 to P3, Marblehead style sail plans on a flat deck.

After payment is made. I will email you the pdf file. Plan has A3, A4 sheets and a larger sheet with sections deasigned for laser cutting.

Phoenix 8 – 10r:  The Phoenix MK 8 is a larger more powerful boat than the last three Phoenix Mks. The P8 is a return to the simple design, No chines, no raised fore deck and Marblehead rig profiles as used from P1 to P3. This allows simpler light weight construction and fully open soft decks and shared rigs if you have a Marblehead.

LOA: 1650 mm LWL: 1240mm, BOA: 170mm, Draught: 630 – 680mm, Disp 5.7kg, SA: 1.00 m2

Phoenix 6.1 – 10r The P6 is a radical departure from previous Phoenix Marks. The hull shape features my latest thinking and has elements from both the P5 and GothiX 10rs. The hull features very narrow overall beam with tumblehome, high Prismatic hull shape and chine at the stern. The P6 1200mm waterline and can be ballasted from 3.8 to 4.0kg ballast.

This is the updated version 2023. If you would like the original P6 plan please specify.

Phoenix 5 10r Plan

Phoenix 5 – 10r  Was designed for more wind and more open water than the P4 with 4kg ballast. With a 1200mm waterline the P5 has excellent light air performance.

Molded hulls are available.

After payment is made. I will email you the pdf file with 6 A4 and 3 A3 sheets.

Phoenix 4 10r Was intended as a narrower lighter version of the very successful P3. Featuring a shorter waterline at 1200mm and lighter weight, with modern deep thin foils.

The P4 is an exceptional light air boat.

Radio controlled 10 Rater model yacht from 1960's fully restored and ready to go

Radio controlled 10 Rater model yacht from 1960's fully restored and ready to go

I have for sale a circa 1960's 10 rater model yacht, possibly a John Lewis or Ken Jones design. Originally a vane yacht, I've now completely restored her and converted her to radio control.

She measures 6' long with a beautiful slender 1' beam, surprisingly only a 1' draught with a really heavy lead ballast, making her very practical for shallower lakes, she stands an impressive 8' 6" from the bottom of the keel to the top of the mast when rigged.........although a very usable model she would be an incredible display piece too..............

As you'll see from the photos, I've used as many of her original deck, mast and boom fittings as possible but kept the decks as clear as I can, she has a new individually planked deck, a powerful Hitec drum winch with through deck fittings, a futaba rudder servo and 2.4ghz receiver...........

The original kicking strap is a master piece in itself (see pic) and when used with the original in boom threaded outhaul and gooseneck down haul gives you total control over the shape of the sail and they all work like clockwork. All the standing rigging has been replaced with anti coil stainless wire terminated with a quick twist tool. The shroud bottle screws are original and give tension options on the chain plates.

I've retained the self tacking horse on the foredeck just in front of the mast (see pic) but also rigged her from the winch line to have a full range jib to allow for goose winging on the run giving you both options........

The original wooden boom and chromed fittings were restored but I had the original mast and jib boom powder coated in gloss black.

The brand new panelled and stitched sails, to her original sail pattern, were expertly made by Martin at House Martin sails in a heavy sail material.

The original mast head crane was a bit iffy and looked weak so I replaced it with a modern equivalent and it not only works well but is peace of mind when applying the essential back stay tension.

She was a bit of state when I got her so she's ben stripped back to bare wood, filled where necessary and painted below the water line, the inside of the hull is glass fibre lined and on her recent "sea" trial, she remained totally dry........Ive planked the deck in 3mm thick individual planks with a contrasting king plank. The mast has a lovely chrome slider allowing rake to be adjusted according to the prevailing conditions, although this is less important on RC than vane but nevertheless nice to have, she's been finished in a minimum of 6 coats of polyurethane varnish all over.

If you want any more pictures of individual parts of the yacht, please ask............you'll see some of the photos are during her restoration....I've spent at least 120 hours on her ..thank you for looking

If you have any questions or perhaps can throw more light on her provenance, please get in touch through eBay

On this you tube clip there wasn't as much wind as I hoped for but you'll get the idea click below

San Francisco Model Yacht Club

10 Rater Class

Relatively new to SFMYC is the 10 Rater.  It is a medium to large size developmental class yacht with a reputation for speed. Also recognized by AMYA as an International class, worldwide support for this graceful yacht promotes racing and design advancements on the very leading edge of performance. The name “10 Rater” refers to the formula used to determine the legality of boats within this class. If, after working through a formula, you arrive at a number of “10” or less, then you have a boat that fits into the 10 Rater class.

NSW Radio Yachting Association logo

The Ten Rater is a medium-sized yacht with a reputation for speed. This development class is restricted by a simple formula of waterline length multiplied by sail area, multiplied by eight, to equal ten or less. As there are few restrictions, the class allows the greatest freedom for development and experimentation.

Approx. 50-65" long.

Int.Ten Rater (RC Model)

Int.Ten Rater (RC Model) is a 3 ′ 5 ″ / 1.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Various starting in 1900.

Drawing of Int.Ten Rater (RC Model)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

RC Model Yacht. Basic dimensions are estimates/average as this a development class using the ‘length and sail area rating rule’ developed for full size yachts in 1887. (A most recent use of the rule is the 5.5 METER CLASS.)

Many different hull forms can be found in the TEN RATER class. The latest versions will usually be made almost entirely of carbon fibre - hull, foils, spars and fittings.

Classic Pond Yachts

I recently bought this model, just loved the appearance , she is a 10 Rater Vane controlled  model yacht, she was designed in 1958 by Mr A Wilcock, some info from the original plans and some info in an old advert for the drawing.

Maree III description.jpeg

The plan and description above give some interesting info on the design, The model I have bought was built by John Gale in 2005, a very well respected model yacht builder, who died some years ago, he built some lovely models for some very well known successful  skippers, this boat like all his other models is beautifully  built. I am hoping to race her at Hampton  Court later this year. Here are some pictures, with one of my windvanes, the only job I will need to get done to sail her is a new mast.

IMG_0572.JPG

Very nice looking boat, to my eyes ! Very nicely built, an interesting boat the hull is single  chinned the bow left very full, the hull is finished with a timber section which leaves a very full bow, it looks like she will have a lot of forward  buoyancy down wind.

IMG_0589.JPG

Here she is with the rig fitted, looks fast to me !! there is some twist in the mast which will be difficult to remove, simpler to fit a new mast, I will use the original fittings, I can paint the mast as per the Wampums I have just done.

IMG_0607.JPG

She has two rigs, this is the A rig, sails look OK, just needs some sorting with the new mast, more pictures below.

IMG_0609.JPG

A couple of pictures below of the interior, showing the usual lovely finish of a John Gale built model. The wind nuts are to remove the rudder for transport.

2021-07-14 11.12.41.jpg

I hope to start this as my next project, It would be nice to get some history on the boat, and the design, she has no sail numbers etc, any info would be very appreciated. More info to follow when I start work.

19 August 21 - Spent the last week making a new alloy mast, used a standard  alloy tube from Sails Etc, it was 50mm shorter than the old mast, but the old mast had bent badly where it fits over the mast step fitting, so I machined up an extension to get the mast length correct, I made it out  of solid alloy bored out to save weight, also made the fitting so the load is taken on the top of the mast step fitting, that spreads the mast compression out into the hull over a longer length.

2021-08-16 16.44.52.jpg

After fitting the alloy part to take rig loads, and made the mast the correct length, I sanded the alloy mast ready for etch primer, I fitted a length of brass rod to out bird seed holder, slid the mast over it and applied the primer.

After sanding the primer I applied the red gloss paint.

2021-08-17 17.41.02.jpg

Paint applied, after the paint had cured I put the mast in our airing cupboard to properly cure.

New heel fitting on mast, the slot is slightly short so the mast sits on top of the mast step to spread the load.

2021-08-19 17.30.11.jpg

Length of shrink wrap fitted to mast to make the fit tighter in the deck fitting, and stop any mast wear.

Here you can see the mast sitting on the top of the mast step.

2021-08-20 09.51.38.jpg

Mast going through deck fitting.

New mast in boat, I have ordered  some vintage spreader fittings for Sails Ect, otherwise I am going to use the fittings from the old mast.

2021-08-19 15.13.49.jpg

Pictures showing some paint repairs started, trying to get her so I can sail her at the VMYG meeting at Gosport on August 30th, end of next week  ! Hope to get paint on tonight, also hope my mast parts arrive tomorrow, all good so far. It will be nice to see a few boats at Gosport bank Holiday Monday !!!

2021-08-20 17.08.19.jpg

A few bits of paint damage being filled needs a sand off ready for paint.

New paint applied, the Humbrol I have matches well !

2021-08-29 10.06.32.jpg

New backstay crane and Hain halyard fitting.

New spreader fitting, part P J Sails, and part Sails etc.

2021-08-24 10.47.00.jpg

New spreader diamonds and forestay fitting. Whilst the mast is mostly new I have tried to make the fittings look older. I have reused the oliginal gooseneck fittings.

Original gooseneck, I made a new boom fitting to take the Main tack fitting.

2021-08-29 10.56.21.jpg

New mast fitted, using the original main and jib booms, I have altered the sheeting lines but re-used the original sheeting line.

B rig fitted ready to set if  breezy, fitted some new lines. The sails look OK, she looks like she will sail well. I will take some videos/pictures tomorrow during her test sail.

2021-08-28 10.38.45.jpg

01 September 21 - Spent Monday at Gosport where the VMYG had an vintage day, a lot of people turned up with some lovely boats. I was really pleased with Maree she looked and sailed really well, we tried to run the Pout cup, a cup for vane 10 raters, sadly the wind direction was not in a great position, but a good breeze and we had a lot of fun, well done to all the members who turned up, I need to talk to the photographer and try to put a page together with the boats, and members?

Gosport Model Yacht Club 10102 30 08 2021 CNGS-MBS.jpg

Some pictures of Maree sailing below, I was very please with how well she sailed, the new mast worked well, a great boat.

Gosport Model Yacht Club 10111 30 08 2021 CNGS-MBS.jpg

18 October 21 - I think Maree sails very well, with some more practice  Vane sailing she will be a lot of fun, as long as you go to a pond/lake that is suitable for Vane sailing, and you have a second person to act as mate on the other side of the bank. A lot of places do not make vane sailing easy. I also like to take the boats our and sail from my launch on the River Hamble, almost impossible with a large Vane boat, just too much traffic, so I am going to fit some radio gear so I can sail her on my own, and on lakes where there is not a bank all the way around. I do not want to chop the boat about and spoil the deck etc, so I am going to make a nice varnished timber panel which will drop into the deck opening to take the radio gear, the existing deck hatch will just fit over the top, the control lines will be removable for vane sailing, the existing sheets will just attach to the new sail winch.

2021-10-18 15.39.13.jpg

This is a picture of the deck hatch opening, you can see the deck hatch inside, that will sit over the radio gear when fitted.

This is a piece of cardboard  cut to fit in the hatch, this is going to be used as a template to check the radio gear and electric pot will fit OK.

2021-10-18 15.39.22.jpg

Here I have cut out the card so the radio gear fits, I will use this to help cut out the timber for the proper fitting, I have shortened the plastic radio pot for the receiver  and battery to keep dry, I cut the bottom of the radio pot off, and used the bottom of a plastic cover for a tube of expanding foam and glued it to the bottom of the radio pot, my problem is there is a handle fitted to allow the yacht to be lifted out of the water, I will have to find another way to lift her when the radio fitted.

The sail winch is too high, I don't want the hatch lid to be too high, so the sail winch will be fitted to the bottom of the timber base so it is no higher than the lid of the radio pot, both the sheeting lines and the steering controls will come out of the aft end of the hatch, the existing sheets will be altered slightly to connect to either the existing sheet control line bowsie, or be unhooked and connected to a sheet winch control line.

2021-10-18 15.52.36.jpg

04 Nov 21 - Here is the radio gear box being fitted, took Maree up to the VMYG meeting at Hampton Court, a lot of wind and rain forecast, we went up with coffee and sandwiches ready to sit in the clubhouse and talk to the other VMYG members, as a plan it went well, then the rain stopped and the sun came out, Rigged Maree with the B rig, launched her in the Rick Pond, she sailed  beautifully, very windy but all worked well, pictures below not great, but all I have.

2021-10-31 14.29.40.jpg

A very nice day at Rick Pond, the Iris Weed around the bank make sailing a Vane boat very hard now, the radio system I have fitted to Maree is removable if I want to sail with Vane gear, but A few minutes to fit the radio gear, very good for lakes where there is no access for Vane  sailing.

...the oldest Model Yacht Club in the UK incorporating The Model Yacht Sailing Association

This monohull development class, is recognized by the isaf (formerly iyry)'s model yacht racing division and is sanctioned by more than 20 individual ten rater class associations, which gives ten rater owners democratic control of the class rules. the ten rater class of model yachts is based on the length by sail area rule of 1887. shortly after this rule was adopted for racing full size yachts, models began to use the rules as a basis for new classes. with a one inch to the foot, or 1/12th scale difference, the ten rater size of model yacht was a popular choice for its ease in transporting and reliable performance. the early days were all free sailing under progressively better devices for automatically controlling the rudder to hold the yachts to a straight course. while hull and sail design underwent similar development, the class gradually gained a reputation for speed. this tradition continues today under radio control, with modern tens employing the most advanced design innovations and construction materials. the present rating rule allows the greatest freedom to experiment with performance improving design and technology, within the size limitations of the rule. this allows the class to offer fair competition, between designers, builders and skippers. the ten rater class is unique in its method of "rating" yachts.  the only two parameters that matters are the waterline length of the hull and the total sail area. it would be more appropriate to say "rig" area as tens are not limited to using only soft sails, but may use rigid wings, or a rotate, as is common on multihulls, but their contribution to propelling the yacht is not overlooked, as even the mast area is included in the yacht's rating. this approach is consistent with all aspects of the rig, with no design or material restrictions imposed nor any free areas given. the result of this unique rating method is the unparalleled efficiency with which ten raters extract power from the wind. below these powerful rigs, ten rater hulls are wide open to experimentation, except to the use of multihulls, tunnel hulls and off-centre or retractable appendages. only the waterline length controls the size of the hull and that may vary in reverse proportion to the size of the rig. this allows ten raters to be highly specialized for exceptional performance in even the most extreme sailing ocean waves with strong gusts or local waters.  hull construction materials and techniques are often hi-tech and state-of-the-art, although modern wood construction may still be used by fine craftsmen, to produce competitive yachts. the greater emphasis is on design innovation, with a steady stream of new ideas coming from the drawing boards, or computers of both amateur and professional designers..

These boats are not limited in length and have overhangs beyond their waterline endings making them light, sleek, seaworthy and fast. This ISAF RSD international rule is based on the 1887 ‘length and sail area rule’ which allows short waterline length boats to have a big sail area and longer LWL boats have smaller sails. It is an ‘open’ rule with great freedom to develop design and construction, particularly in rigs and sail plans. Any boat can be a 10 rater and several Marbleheads have been successful in the class by conversion with just one larger rig giving 40% extra sail area. A typical 10 rater is approximately 1600mm long, weighs 6kg and carries one square metre of sail.

Model Boat Builders Plans: Ten Rater Yacht Plans

The Ten Raters are not limited in length and have overhangs beyond their waterline endings making them light, sleek, seaworthy and fast. Please Note: These plans are printed to order and take approximately 7 days for us to obtain.
