WHAT TO BRING

Your phone to take Instagram-worthy snaps

Swimwear (best to come wearing your swimwear as there is limited changing space) and towel

Hat and sunscreen

Don't bring too much as there is no storage space for large bags (bags left on the floor may also get wet)

Money for premium beverages and optional purchases (merchandise is available for sale onboard, see the items here )

Come prepared to get wet, given SABRE is a sailing boat, you may get some spray while she is underway

SNORKELLING GUIDE

If you have not snorkelled before or are not a strong swimmer, inform the helpful crew and use one of the floatation devices available. Before entering the water, ask your snorkelling guide to check your equipment if uncertain.

Practice makes perfect

Practice snorkelling in shallow water or next to the boat before venturing into deep water.

Safety First

Always snorkel in pairs, keep a watch on others' safety and stay in the snorkelling area and in view of the boat.

Don’t touch the coral or fish

Fiji is home to over 1100 species of fish and 400 species of coral, and we want to protect them. Human contact can cause damage to aquatic life and even wipe out species. So look, don’t touch.

It's easy to get excited with so much to see but stay at a steady pace so you don’t get too tired and stick with a group.

Great seamanship: Chasing the Dawn

Tom Cunliffe

  • Tom Cunliffe
  • March 13, 2024

A Jules Verne attempt finds ocean racer Nick Moloney and the Orange crew in a dangerously vulnerable position in the South Indian Ocean. Tom Cunliffe introduces this extract from Chasing the dawn

south sea sail yachting

The title of Nick Moloney’s remarkable book about breaking the Jules Verne unlimited round the world record in the 33m catamaran Orange offers a hint about the man that few titles ever do. No punches are pulled as it describes tearing around the Southern Ocean in 2002 at over 30 knots with 500-mile days commonplace.

Every now and again, the author’s Aussie roots peek through in a French world under the team’s great skipper Bruno Peyron.

Chasing the Dawn is pure romance. Most voyages are made to the west, following the setting sun, but these guys are going east so rapidly in such high latitudes that it’s like being in a Mach 2 jet fighter flying faster than the Earth is turning.

Despite the literally shocking battering these men are taking, their esprit de corps and appreciation of the beauty of their surroundings continually shines though. Even the mighty machine, overtaking Cape Horn greybeards at galactic speeds, fills them with wonder.

Chasing the Dawn extract

Log entry, 21 March: average speed since the start 17.47 knots.

The wind has been steadily increasing throughout the day into the high 20s and 30s. 30+ boat speed right now, the sea pattern is a little confused so the ride is unpredictable. We’re still sailing with one reef in the mainsail, staysail and medium gennaker. Our next sail choices as the wind increases are tied to the cockpit. Everything else is now inside the boat as far back as possible.

The forecast is slightly split. One forecast shows our expected wind speed at 45 knots, another map says 55 knots max. The approach is to hang onto the sails and wind that we have for as long as we can maintain a reasonable control margin. The thought of flipping over is now consistently on our minds. We are trying to outrun the core of an approaching storm. We will certainly have a bit on our plate in the next few days!

On 21 March at 0216 GMT we crossed from the South Atlantic Ocean into the South Indian Ocean and in doing so set a new record for the fastest time from Ile d’Ouessant to the Cape of Good Hope. It was a small but well-deserved victory, and we savoured the moment. Sport Elec had taken 21 days to get there. Peter Blake and the crew of Enza set a record of 19 days and 17 hours. We passed over the imaginary line due south from Cape Town in a new record time of 18 days, 18 hours and 40 minutes taking 23 hours and 13 minutes off Enza’s time.

Then the Roaring Forties started to roar. The low pressure we’d been keeping an eye on caught us up and the wind built rapidly. “There’s no doubt, we’re in it now,” said Bruno over the satellite phone to our mission control base on a barge on the River Seine in Paris. Our land-based communication agency, Mer et Media, told the world of our situation: ‘Bruno’s voice sounded far away and you could make out the sound of screaming water as it rushed along the maxi catamaran’s side. The wind is blowing at around 50mph (80km/h) and you have to be extremely vigilant both at the helm and with the trim of the sails.

‘The boys are harnessed on, the helmsman watches the wave ahead as he catches it up, then rides it over while the deck watch have their hands glued to the sheets just in case they have to do an emergency dump. The atmosphere is tense and you have to shout to make yourself heard over the noise of shrieking wind and the waves as they explode on the bows and through the trampoline nets. ‘“We had an absolutely lousy sea last night,” Bruno said. “We’ve been in 45 knots of wind since last night! Otherwise all is well aboard.”

‘The maxi-catamaran Orange crossed some pretty inhospitable territory last night. Apart from having to cope with the wind, the giant had to confront the Agulhas current that descends down the coast of Africa, whipping up a nasty boat-breaking sea. The Agulhas shelf off the coast of Africa stops the Atlantic swell because the seabed rises from more than 16,500ft/5,000m to only 2,526ft/770m. This acts like a cauldron.

“We went down the mine a bit violently in a surf at about 0800 this morning,” continued Bruno. “We are constantly at between 20 and 32 knots and this time we must have gone from 30 knots to 15 instantly. And with the inertia everything went flying around inside. Vlad was preparing a meal and he redecorated the galley. I split my lip open falling over and Florent hurt his pelvis. We called Dr Jean-Yves Chauve (shore-based doctor) on the telephone and at the moment Florent is lying down and resting.”’

Into the red zone

Log entry, 22 March: Dawn was very welcome this morning. We have been copping a bit of a hammering. We are trying to keep the boat speed down to the low 20s but sometimes she just takes off. The call comes out ‘tenezvous’ (hang on) and we brace ourselves for big stuff. The waves are cresting in small peaks that are very unpredictable.

It sets off a succession of explosions of water as these peaks hit the hull and beams randomly. Their next location is unpredictable. Crossing the tramp is a nightmare. Those on deck are getting hammered. It’s a pretty wild ride and very uncomfortable. People are sleeping on sails in the bilge still clad in full wet weather gear waiting for a call up to assist on deck. Life’s pretty ‘full-on’ right now.

Benoit Briand recounted his recent stint behind the wheel: “Helming in these conditions, there are many times when you lose contact with the boat for 10 seconds or so. You’re not on the water any more but under it.”

Great seamanship: Fifty South to Fifty South

The German pilot schooner Elbe 5, built in 1883, has had a remarkable life. A few years ago, she was…

Gilles Chiorri gives another: “On my watch, I had 56 knots of wind and a 36-knot surf. It’s tough, damp, violent and physical! I’ve never sailed down waves so fast. The speedometer had freaked out! Right now with our ski goggles on we look more like characters out of Star Wars than sailors.”

The storm continued to gather strength relentlessly through the day. Updates on the system were relayed to those on deck. Conversation is now made by yelling at the top of your voice, repeating the information several times until it is received. Everyone is on edge. Trying to rest below is impossible; lying around in cold wet Gore-Tex has you shivering within minutes. Your ears are tuned in to the sounds of the hull and your heart skips a few beats every time a voice pierces the wind. Every time we accelerate everybody braces for a sudden stop as the beams plough into the cold sea.

The shuffle of feet on deck and the opening of the hatch was all it took to have all hands at the foot of the companionway ready to assist the on-deck team. The call was for yet more reduction of sail. This reduction would leave us with only a triple-reefed main. Working on the tramp was marginal: one second you were 33ft/10m above the sea, the next you were under water.

south sea sail yachting

More big conditions in the Southern Indian Ocean. Photo: Jean-Baptiste Epron

Our safety relied on the strength of the harness lines and their anchor points. If either failed we’d be swept off the deck into the cold, dark, wild sea, never to be seen again. The situation was very risky but after a long, wet wrestle the storm jib was lashed to the beam. We all turned and scrambled back to the cockpit.

Those of us off watch gathered under the cuddy and talked about the situation. The change in sail area didn’t seem to have helped and we were still surfing too hard and fast. There was no other way to slow the boat down and we were at the mercy of the sea. We had lost control of the situation. Bruno came on deck and stood beside HervĂ© at the helm. The seas were getting bigger and bigger, so big that it was becoming too dangerous to take the drop down the face of the waves as the risk of cartwheeling was too high. Other crew members crowded under the canopy.

I felt the boat turning sharply. “Oh my god, we are about to capsize,” I thought. I turned around to see HervĂ© and Bruno wrestling with the wheel. Someone yelled in French and Ronnie clipped his harness onto the mainsheet and ran towards the foot of the mast.

I scrambled on deck as we came head to wind. The wind was just howling. I jumped out of the cockpit onto the trampoline to help Ronnie. I had not clipped on and was immediately smacked by a huge wave. I was engulfed completely and knew I was airborne. ‘Oh no, I’m off the boat,’ I thought. Then the water subsided and I landed on the trampoline. I immediately scrambled on all fours to the little shelter behind the mid beam. I took a few deep breaths, thanked my lucky stars, clipped onto the mainsheet and ran forward again.

south sea sail yachting

Work on the trampolines was always high risk. Photo: Jean-Baptiste Epron

When I got to the mast, Ronnie had begun to release the main halyard, dropping the sail completely – the only sail we had left flying. I climbed onto the sail and began lashing it to the boom. Ronnie and Yann also climbed onto the sail while Yves, Vlad and PĂ©pĂȘche threw lines to us and we tied them off. We were now side-on to the waves and wind, in a very vulnerable position.

Looking back at Bruno on the helm, the waves were the biggest I had ever seen, even at the movies. The windage of the hulls and wing mast was great enough to leave our windward hull suspended as an enormous wave passed beneath us. Thick spray burst through the trampoline engulfing us all. When it blew clear, the hull was still suspended in the screaming wind. We were not in a good position if she had gone over.

We finished lashing down the sail and scurried back to the cockpit. We were getting close to that 70 to 80 knots of wind that can flip one of these boats at the dock. Our next step would have been to flood the hulls with water making the boat heavier and hopefully more stable. We put off this option for as long as possible because of the effort involved in getting the water out again, and because of the extra stress the added weight gives to the structure. “We have to get away from this system,” yelled Gilles.

With the boat parked I went below to try and send off a report via email. The noise of the waves breaking over the boat was indescribable. As was the motion. I kept getting thrown about the cabin and was wondering if it was all worth it when suddenly I received an email of encouragement from my sister and niece. It’s amazing how a few words of encouragement can change your world.

The note also brought a sudden twinge of homesickness. I had been away for too long already. For the next 18 hours we huddled in the dark, cold bilges of our craft. The sounds of the screaming winds and roaring seas left us bracing ourselves against nature’s anger and fury. Our lifeline was being battered and we heavily contemplated our fate and the possible end to our journey.

Towards a new dawn

During the radio chat session with mission control Bruno reported: “We’ll not forget Friday night in a hurry. It’s not every day you find yourself under bare poles on a 33m boat. Even the crew that have done The Race have never seen that before. We shortened sail until there was nothing at all. None of this stopped us from making 20-plus knots with just the mast! What surprised us most was the force of the sea. We managed to have a life raft torn away from the aft beam overnight!”

We can see the waves coming about 500-700m off. We take avoiding action, which turns out not to work and we find ourselves at the foot of a wall of water. Speed, no speed, go through it, cut across it? You have to make your mind up quickly. Once you have decided what you’re going to do, there’s no going back on it.

At mid-morning on 24 March, on our 22nd day at sea, we broke free of that storm, some 1,000 miles south of the Kerguelen Islands, and resumed our course to the south-east, towards a new dawn and a new day. During the storm I remember saying ‘for every tough day at sea, there are at least five great days in return’. Well, just then we were ready to cash in.

The boys made it round in 64 days 8 hours 37 minutes 24 seconds, taking a week out of the previous best time by Sport Elec five years previously. In 2017, Joyon got round in an almost incredible 40 days 23 hours 30 minutes 30 seconds in the trimaran IDEC Sport.

Cargo calculator

What’s distance & time.

It’s a logistics application created to estimate distances and times between sea routes under particular parameters.

How it works?

You insert your origin and destination and then the system displays data about distances and time estimates from SeaRates database.

What’s the information based on?

Open sources combined with information from various shipping lines and nautical agencies. This information has been collected for over ten years and is regularly updated.

Get your planning under control

Few professional shipping companies are able to answer this question “When will I get my shipment?” to the client’s satisfaction. Our transit time system lets you fill this gap in seconds The clean interface is visually appealing and easy to use. Keeping track of your delivery time is important if you want to provide clients with accurate estimates after order placement. This is what we’ve been doing at SeaRates for many years and are now sharing with the rest of the world!

Distance & Time made simple

Often customers are given a very rough estimate of their delivery. “It will take two to four weeks”, for example, or “it can be delivered by Friday if you place your order in the next 12 hours”. This gives a frame of reference to the customer, but all other things being equal, given a choice between several companies with similar prices, the customer will choose the one with the fastest delivery service. So precise information is always preferred, since it is often necessary to prepare or be personally present for the delivery. Not to mention that properly timing your delivery is crucial to avoid work gaps in production. Save yourself some unwanted trouble by installing our Distance & Times tool to help you compete in the marketplace!

Usually the transport companies integrate the app with Logistics Explorer to also provide customers with instant shipping rates from/to anywhere in the world. It can also be enhanced by Route Planner to also schedule shipments easier and track sea lines

Distance & Time

Make your site better by integrating tools from searates, shipping distance & time calculator.

Distance & Time is web application, which allows to calculate distances and transit time between two points using different modes of transport.

A record on the high seas: Cole Brauer becomes first US woman to sail solo around the world

south sea sail yachting

On Thursday, Cole Brauer made history, becoming the first American woman to sail solo nonstop around the world. The 29-year-old from Long Island, New York, celebrated at the finish line in Spain by drinking champagne from her trophy.

Friends, peers and sailing enthusiasts had been cheering Brauer on since last October, when she embarked on her more than four-month journey.

Race organizer Marco Nannini told USA TODAY he started the Global Solo Challenge to "create a platform for sailors like Cole to showcase her skills and move on to a pro sailor career."

While at sea Brauer kept her more than 400,000 Instagram followers updated − and entertained − with videos from onboard First Light. The trip was extremely challenging and physically exhausting, Brauer said in one video from December.

In the post, she describes how frustrated she felt when she had to fix and replace different parts of the boat.

"I don't want you guys to think I'm like Superwoman or something," Brauer said. "Right now I've been feeling just broken," she added, describing how she had to fix the boat's autopilot system after injuring her torso against the side of the boat's hull amid intense waves.

Who is Cole Brauer?

Brauer is from Long Island and competed for the University of Hawaii sailing team. She went to high school in East Hampton, New York, her university team website says. She was the youngest of more than a dozen sailors, or skippers, in the Global Solo Challenge.

The professional sailor lives in Boothbay, Maine, and during the spring and summer, she can be also found in Newport, Rhode Island, gearing up for races, the Newport Daily News reported last year .

Brauer has sailed on First Light, a 40-foot yacht, for over five years, the outlet reported.

"I always said I wanted to race around the world in this boat," she told the newspaper.

From above and below First Light's deck, Brauer shared aspects of her journey with followers and die-hard sailing fans.

On New Year's Eve, she donned a dress and danced at midnight , and in another post, she showed off how many pull-ups she can do.

As the only woman racing solo, nonstop around the world in the first Global Solo Challenge, Brauer said she was determined to prove there's nothing women and girls cannot accomplish.

"I push so much harder when someone's like, 'No, you can't do that,'" Brauer told NBC Nightly News . "And I'm like, 'OK, watch me.'"

Brauer is the first American woman to sail solo around the world. But Kay Cottee of Australia was the first woman in the world to accomplish the milestone, sailing off from Sydney Harbor in Australia in November 1987 and returning 189 days later.

On her profile page on the Global Solo Challenge website, Brauer said she wanted to send a message to the sailing community that it's time to leave its male-dominated culture in the past. In the profile, Brauer took aim at a lack of equal pay and what she describes as harassment in the sailing industry.

"Just as well as this community has built me up it has broken me and my fellow female teammates down. I am doing this race for them," Brauer said.

Brauer and her spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

How long was Cole Brauer at sea?

Brauer was sailing for over four months after departing on Oct. 29.

She finished second in the race, behind a sailor who departed about a month before she did.

The start times differed because that first place boat, Phillipe Delamare's Mowgli, is much slower, Nannini said, explaining the race's staggered start times.

"The format means that if you enter on a slow, small boat you can still win, which makes it much more inclusive than an event where a bigger budget is a definite advantage," he said.

France's Delamare will win first-place prize money of 7,500 euros (about $8,140), Brauer will win 5,000 euros (about $5,430) and the third place finisher will win 2,500 euros (about $2,710), Nannini said.

How dangerous was Cole Brauer's sailing race?

A medical team including a nurse and a physician trained Brauer and sent her on her journey with medicines and medical supplies, in case of any health issues, according to her Instagram account.

Early in the race, Brauer administered her own IV with a saline solution after she became dehydrated, according to one video posted to her social media.

Brauer's most serious health scare happened in early December when she said gnarly ocean conditions caused the boat to jolt, throwing her across the inside of the boat and slamming her hard against a wall.

Her ribs were badly bruised as a result, and her medical team told her to alternate between taking Advil and Tylenol, Brauer said on Instagram.

"Rigging up a sleeping seat belt has been added to my priority list," she said in the post's caption. "I know I'm very lucky that this wasn't a lot worse."

What is the Global Solo Challenge?

The inaugural Global Solo Challenge is a nonstop sailing race in which competitors departed last year from A Coruña, Spain.

The race encompasses nearly 30,000 miles and takes place mostly in the southern hemisphere.

After leaving waters off the coast of Spain, sailors travel south and around Africa's Cape of Good Hope. The race then includes the two other capes that together make up the famous three great capes: Australia's Cape Leeuwin and South America's Cape Horn.

About half of the other competitors dropped out of the race, according to racing data posted online by the Global Solo Challenge.

Delamare finished the race late last month after embarking on his journey in late September 2023, according to race data.

Cole Brauer, 29, spent four months alone at sea navigating around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, Australia’s Cape Leeuwin and South America’s Cape Horn.

A sailor from Boothbay has become the first American woman to complete a solo race around the world.

Cole Brauer, 29, arrived Thursday in Coruna, Spain, completing her four months alone at sea, according to CBS News .

Brauer was among 10 sailors in the Global Solo Challenge, a grueling race that involves navigating the globe’s three capes: Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, Australia’s Cape Leeuwin and South America’s Cape Horn.

After about two months at sea, Brauer’s boat was hit by a massive wave, slamming her into the vessel’s walls and leaving her with bruised ribs, CBS News reported.

Brauer, who now lives in Newport, Rhode Island, began her sailing career in 2013, and has established herself a formidable opponent on open water. She took high honors last year during the Bermuda One-Two Yacht Race, according to the Lincoln County News.

“From the outside, as a kid I viewed sailing as a gentlemen’s sport — a rich person’s sport,” she told the Lincoln County News last year . “But when I moved to Hawaii, I saw a different type of sailing that was a grassroots, rag-tag bunch of people drawn to the waves, wind and seafaring lifestyle.

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Related: Why Sea Cloud Spirit is a sailing vessel you'll want to try

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

Man recovering from crocodile attack, plans to continue sailing his boat

Liane Morejon , Reporter

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A South Florida man is grateful to be alive after being bitten by a crocodile over the weekend.

Speaking to Local 10 News from his hospital bed, 68-year-old Rodrigo Constain recalled what happened when he was rushed to Jackson South Medical Center on Sunday.

“After an experience like this, to be alive is to be grateful with God,” Constain said.

It happened just before 5 p.m. near Flamingo Marina inside Everglades National Park after Constain had just gone out on his sailboat.

The boat capsized, so Constain got out to put it upright.

That’s when he said he felt something grab onto his leg.

“I felt the nose, and I grabbed on to it to pull apart (its jaws), but he opened his mouth by himself,” said Constain.

He said he used the boat to shield him as he dragged it back towards the dock.

His wife and park rangers helped tend to his wounds, Constain said.

It was there that they figured out that a crocodile had been lurking in the water.

Despite the ordeal, Constain said it won’t stop him from going out on the water again.

“I’m not afraid because when you have God with you, you are not afraid,” he said.

An Aid Ship Is Sailing to Gaza, Where Hundreds of Thousands Face Starvation 5 Months Into War

An aid ship loaded with some 200 tons of food is sailing to Gaza

Petros Karadjias

Petros Karadjias

The ship, left, belonging to the Open Arms aid group with aid on a platform ferry some 200 tonnes of rice and flour directly to Gaza, departs from the port of southern city of Larnaca, Cyprus, Tuesday, March 12, 2024. An aid ship loaded with some 200 tons of food set sail Tuesday from Cyprus to Gaza, the international charity behind the effort said. The shipment is a test for the opening of a sea corridor to supply aid to the territory, where starvation is spreading five months into the Israel-Hamas war. (AP Photo/Petros Karadjias)

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An aid ship loaded with some 200 tons of food set sail for Gaza on Tuesday in a pilot program for the opening of a sea corridor to the territory, where the 5-month Israel-Hamas war has driven hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the brink of starvation .

The push to get food in by sea — along with a recent campaign of airdrops into isolated northern Gaza — highlighted the international community's frustration with the growing humanitarian crisis and its inability to get aid in by road.

The food on the aid ship was collected by World Central Kitchen, the charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, and is being transported by the Spanish aid group Open Arms. The ship departed from the eastern Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus and is expected to arrive in Gaza in two to three days.

The United States separately plans to construct a sea bridge near Gaza in order to deliver aid, but it will likely be several weeks before it is operational. President Joe Biden's administration has provided crucial military aid for Israel while urging it to facilitate more humanitarian access.

WAR RAGES WITH NO END IN SIGHT

The war , triggered by Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel, has killed over 31,000 Palestinians and driven most of Gaza's 2.3 million people from their homes. A quarter of Gaza's population is starving, according to the United Nations , because they cannot find enough food or afford it at vastly inflated prices.

Efforts by U.S., Qatar and Egypt to broker a cease-fire and hostage release before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan stalled as Hamas demanded that any temporary pause in the fighting come with guarantees for ending the war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to expand the offensive into the strip's southern city of Rafah , where half of Gaza's population has sought refuge, and to keep fighting until Hamas has been dismantled and all the captives it is holding have been returned.

The war threatens to spill across the Middle East as Iran-backed groups allied with Hamas trade fire with U.S. and Israeli forces. The Israeli military said around 100 projectiles were launched into Israel from Lebanon early on Tuesday, one of the biggest barrages since the war began. It appeared to be in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon the day before.

A pair of Israeli airstrikes Tuesday in northeastern Lebanon killed at least two people and wounded 20. Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group have traded fire nearly every day since the war began.

The Israeli military said it also hit two targets in Syria used by Hezbollah.

'OUR CHILDREN CAN'T FIND ANYTHING TO EAT'

Aid groups say it is nearly impossible to deliver aid in much of Gaza because of Israeli restrictions, ongoing hostilities and the breakdown of order after the Hamas-run police force largely vanished from the streets.

Conditions are especially dire in northern Gaza, which has widespread devastation and has been largely cut off by Israeli forces since October. Up to 300,000 Palestinians are believed to have remained there despite Israeli evacuation orders, with many reduced to eating animal feed in recent weeks.

On Monday, the first day of the normally festive month of Ramadan , children with pots lined up at a charity kitchen in the urban Jabaliya refugee camp. Each was given a small portion of cooked carrots and sweet potatoes to break the dawn-to-dusk fast.

“Our children can't find anything to eat," said Bassam al-Haw, a volunteer. "No food, no water, no flour.”

Six humanitarian aid trucks brought aid directly into northern Gaza on Tuesday evening, coordinated by the Israeli military, which called it a pilot program to determine if additional food can be brought overland into the north. The military said the aid was checked at Israel’s Kerem Shalom crossing near Egypt and brought into Gaza at the 96th gate crossing, which is close to Kibbutz Be’eri.

The World Food Program delivered food into northern Gaza on Tuesday for the first time since Feb. 20, according to the United Nations. After being checked at Israel's Kerem Shalom crossing, the military said six humanitarian aid trucks brought WFP aid into Gaza at the 96th gate crossing, close to Kibbutz Be’eri.

Aid groups have been struggling to get aid to the isolated area for months, although some private convoys have managed to deliver food. The World Health Organization and others delivered food, fuel and medical supplies Monday to two hospitals in the north, the U.N. said.

SEA ROUTE BRINGS PROMISE AND POTENTIAL PERIL

The planned sea route has the support of the European Union, the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and others. The U.S. and other countries have also launched airdrops, but such efforts are costly and unlikely to meet the mounting needs.

The United Nations welcomed the inauguration of the sea route, but reiterated that transporting aid by land is the best way to get the most aid into Gaza.

The Open Arms ship is towing a barge loaded with food. Once it nears Gaza, two smaller vessels will tow the barge to a jetty being built by World Central Kitchen, which operates 65 kitchens across the territory, the group said. It plans to distribute the food in the north.

“The best security is to have enough food in Gaza,” Andres said. “We want to make sure nothing happens to anybody.”

Scores of Palestinians were killed last month during a chaotic aid delivery in the north organized by Israeli troops, who fired on the crowd. Israel said most of those killed were trampled to death, while Palestinian officials said most had been shot .

Israel, which controls Gaza's coastline and all but one of its land crossings, says it supports efforts to deliver aid by sea and will inspect all cargo shipments.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was the first time a ship had been authorized to deliver aid directly to Gaza since 2005 and that the EU would work with “smaller ships” until the U.S. completes work on its floating port.

Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said during a visit to Beirut that there is a “mechanism” in place for larger shipments, with the goal of "a more systematic exercise with increased volumes.”

The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel in a surprise attack on Oct. 7, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostage.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Israeli offensive launched in response has killed at least 31,185 Palestinians. The ministry doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said women and children make up around two-thirds of the dead.

Israel blames the civilian death toll on Hamas because the militants fight in dense, residential areas. The military has said it has killed 13,000 Hamas fighters, without providing evidence.

A strike on a home in the central city of Deir al-Balah early on Tuesday killed 11 people from the same family, including four women and five children, according to hospital records and an Associated Press reporter who saw the bodies brought in.

Magdy reported from Cairo and Hadjicostis from Nicosia, Cyprus. Associated Press writers Tia Goldenberg in Tel Aviv, Israel; Raf Casert in Brussels and Abby Sewell in Beirut contributed to this report.

The West Australian

Just three women took part in the competition.

South Yunderup Radio Sailing hosts 2024 DF95 Australian Championships

Old sea dogs happily battled windy conditions on day one of the Australian National DF Radio Sailing Championships hosted by Austin Lakes Radio Sailing Club.

Sailors from across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Perth, and Albany converged on the pristine waters of Austin Lakes in the Peel Region for the five-day sailing spectacle.

The action began at Austin Lakes in South Yunderup on Friday, which is one of WA’s premier radio sailing locations, renowned for its strong winds and easy vantage points to witness the nation’s top DF sailors in action.

A fleet of 60 skilled sailors divided into two DF classes - the smaller DF 65’s (65cm long), followed by the larger DF 95’s (95cm long) navigated the choppy waters.

All boats feature the same one-design hull and sails, which means success is dictated by the skill of the sailor setting the sails and controlling the boat remotely onshore.

The surge in popularity of radio sailing has attracted mainly men of all ages, which allows seasoned sailors to extend their maritime pursuits well into retirement without going to sea.

However, three women held their own during the competition, including 38-year-old Jenna Salau from Victoria who has been racing for a year.

The Game AFL 2024

“I just want to give them a run for their money,” she said.

Ms Salau said she’d love to see more younger people join the competition.

“It would be nice to have younger people in general,” she said.

“Some of these guys can get a bit testy.”

Becoming a DF sailor is more affordable than the average yacht, a DF 65 can set you back just $300.

Andrew Donkin has been the club’s Commodore for three years and said many competitors like him were avid sailors before racing DFs.

Former world champion Nick Jerwood and club Commodore Andrew Donkin.

“There are ocean sailors who learn how to set their sails using these,” he said.

Nick Jerwood from WA won the DF65 category, followed by Mike Jefferys and Daniel Bergan.

Jerwood also took out the DF95 category, followed by Austin Lake’s Donkin and John Wyatt from Sydney.

Salau finished up in the 17th position.

Up next, Austin Lakes club member and former world champion Andrew Donkin will join six other Australian sailors in Sweden for the World DF Sailing Championships in May.
