The Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Interior Careers

Following the success of our ‘Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Deck Careers’ , we step inside and offer our take on how to enter and get ahead in the interior department.

To ensure that we are up to speed with all of the latest requirements, we take our lead from the recently-launched careers guidance platform, Academy by Ephemeris, whose comprehensive interior pathway clearly lays out all of the steps you need to follow in order to succeed in your yachting career.

Stewardess: The day-to-day

At the entry-level position of the interior pathway, stewardesses are responsible for maintaining the interior on board a yacht and providing five-star service to owners and guests at all times. The role encompasses varied tasks such as laundry, housekeeping, interior detailing, flower arranging, food and beverage service and onboard event planning. Reporting to the second stewardess, chief stewardess or even the captain, depending on the size of the yacht, the steward/ess role requires a strong work ethic, a great deal of organisation, attention to detail and discretion, as well as a willingness to listen and learn the ropes on the job. A junior stewardess within the interior team on a 45-50m+ boat would typically start their career in housekeeping and laundry rather than in service. In contrast, on a smaller yacht, the stewardess can be a department of just one person, with responsibility for all the interior duties on board. This could include setting up and preparing meals, housekeeping, laundry, organising guest activities, formal meal service, cabin turndowns, and the list goes on! 

As the interior team enjoys the most face-to-face time with guests and is responsible for communicating their wishes to the captain, chef and deck department, it is important to maintain good communication, high levels of professionalism, and a positive attitude at all times when undertaking this role.  

How do I become a stewardess? Qualifications and training 

Since it is the entry-level position for the interior pathway, one of the advantages of the junior steward/ess role is that it does not require many qualifications or schooling, meaning that it serves as the perfect gateway to start your career onboard. 

As outlined on Academy by Ephemeris’ interior pathway, all crew need to show evidence of having completed STCW basic safety training (a five-day course), as well as an ENG1 medical certificate. In addition, some yachts may also require certification in Food Safety and Hygiene (a one-day course which can be completed in person or online). Yachts to which the ISPS Code applies require all crew to be trained and hold a Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certificate (this is a half-day course that can be completed online).

Chief Stewardess: The day-to-day 

Providing that a yacht's interior department consists of more than one individual, the chief stew is responsible for managing the schedule and maintenance of the interior, as well as ensuring that guests receive excellent service. 

The chief stew oversees and trains the team in all aspects of the interior department to ensure everything is executed to the highest standard, encompassing tasks such as general cleaning and bed making, folding laundry, polishing silver and creating flower arrangements, and delivering professional and impeccable levels of service.

How do I become a chief stewardess? Qualifications and training

Once you have shown evidence of the basic safety qualifications outlined above, unlike with many senior deck positions, there is no a set list of mandatory qualifications which are required to be eligible to apply for chief stewardess roles. 

There is a plethora of options for you to explore which are outlined on the Academy by Ephemeris interior pathway , including Advanced Laundry Service, Advanced Food and Beverage Service, Cigar Service, Floristry and Plant Maintenance, and many more.  

Purser: The day-to-day

If you enjoy figures, have a calm head on your shoulders and are supremely organised, the job of a yacht purser may be the one for you and serve as an alternative option to becoming a chief steward/ess. 

Still under the remit of the interior department, the yacht purser is a senior role who reports to the captain, often taking on some of the duties and administration, which would be completed by the captain or chief stewardess on smaller yachts. Although the role varies depending on the needs of each individual yacht, the purser can serve as the head of the interior and manage the interior team. 

Day to day, the purser is responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operations of the yacht, encompassing finances, crew management and administration, guest and crew travel arrangements, administrative tasks and much more. The purser oversees accounting, purchasing, inventories and may also assist the captain with compliance and certification requirements, and the planning of guest itineraries. 

How do I become a purser? Qualifications and training

Although there are no mandatory training requirements for pursers, it would be wise for prospective candidates to consider that this is a senior role requiring knowledge and skills across many different areas and departments. This includes administration, finance, maritime law, safety and security awareness, an understanding of ISPS and ISM protocols, as well as strong computer skills. 

Those with an existing degree in business, finance or accounting may already be well suited to the role. However, if you do not immediately recognise yourself in this description, there’s no need to panic! 

There are numerous purser courses you can undertake to bring yourself up to speed. These cover topics including VAT, crew administration and vessel operations, human resource management, customs and immigration, and much more. Creative Designer / Stylist Yacht Interiors

Today our international team of creative professionals is looking for an experienced Creative Designer / Stylist who can help us to create Yacht Interior designs to perfection!

CHECK OUT YOUR TASKS:

• Taking the lead in developing creative designs & design directions for interiors, custom furniture, styling, décor and materials according to requirements and art direction;
• Produce sketches, drawings, floor plans, idea / mood / style / materials boards to communicate creative designs & design directions to the Art Director and project leaders;
• Enhance and improve interior space functionality and style by designing & modifying architectural elements and arranging furniture, furnishings, FF&E, artwork, and décor up to final design phase;
• Creation of presentations, full briefings for CGI artists, design and collection of material samples and control on all required project documentation and schedules;
• Execution of projects with art director / senior designers / CGI artists / stylists / design engineers as a project team member and independently when necessary.

CHECK WHAT WE REQUIRE:

• 4-8 years professional experience as creative interior designer in super yacht industry and / or high-end luxury interior markets;
• Talented creative professional
• Great knowledge of sources, suppliers, manufacturers, production technology and materials;
• Hi-level organization, communication and presentation skills
• Professional mastery of Adobe Suite, Office Suite, AutoCAD and English language;
• Living in or willing to relocate to Netherlands, a valid NLD work permit is required.

High-end Interior CAD Technician

You will work together with our development teams on several projects and will immerse yourself in effective drawing-up of interior designs for superyachts. Project will range from tenders to 100m+ superyachts.

• Creation and management of design-describing CAD drawing packages
• Contribution to and translation of developed designs for hi-end interiors / loose furniture, integrating form, function, technology and materials
• Development of design-related technical solutions and details according to requirements
• Intense cooperation with informal & supportive international team
• Communication and information transfer internally & with external parties.

Your Qualifications

• Proven 3 years+ of experience as interior CAD technician for hi-level residences and / or yachts
• Good knowledge of interior and furniture production and integration of systems and installations
• Professional mastery of AutoCAD and good knowledge of Adobe Suite
• Self-starter and team player
• Can-do mentality, flexible, responsible for workflow and deadlines;
• Good communication skills and able to work in an international environment
• Professional mastery of English language is required, Dutch is a plus
• Responsible, proactive, organized and a sharp eye for detail
• Living in or willing to relocate to Netherlands, a valid Dutch work permit is required.

The position is located in the Facilities and Operations Maintenance Branch, Klamath Basin Area Office. This position performs a wide range of skilled electrician duties which consists of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment commonly found in industrial facilities i.e. Water storage and diversion dams, pumping plants and electrical features associated with these facilities, buildings and auxiliary equipment. In addition, the work requires general mechanical skills and knowledge, and in some cases may require knowledge of electronic principles as they pertain to electronic control circuitry. This job requires knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards. -Performs installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment, transformers, converters, regulators, cables, switches, circuit breakers, mechanical and electronic recording instruments, mechanical and electronic control systems, and other circuit elements, as well as the electrical portions of generators. -Examples of the above are - secondary power distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements, to distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits; industrial multiphase systems; thermocouple sensors; electrical intrusion alarm and fire alarm system; emergency warning systems; lighting protection systems; high intensity lighting systems with associated controls; target mechanisms; AC and DC rectification systems; galvanic and impressed current cathodic projection systems, which prevent corrosion on underground or submerged equipment and pipes; amplifier circuits; and related electrical equipment. -Services lines, transformers, insulators, capacitor equipment, lightning arresters, switches, fuses, ground connects, and similar equipment. -Assignments may include working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls. -Conducts planning and lay out work, tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems and completing repairs and installations with little or no advice. -Installs, modifies, connects, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs overhead and underground electrical distribution lines serving an activity or group of activities such as a pumping plants, dams, and Reclamation facilities. -Work may be performed on systems up to 600 VAC, that are disconnected. Work may be performed on de-energized systems up to 2400 VAC. -Performs infrared (IR) thermography to scan and record images of low voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, batteries, etc. -May work independently or as part of a work crew. -Operates pumping plants for drainage purposes, involving determining pumping requirements by close observation of water levels and operating conditions. -Removes pumping units and disassembles for inspection or repair by others. -During periods of non-operation, performs maintenance work on canals, drains, and water facility structures, including dams, and pumping plants.

You will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment as a condition of employment. This position is also subject to random drug testing. May be required to perform temporary duty travel (TDY) approximately 10% of the time. Must maintain Journeyman Electrician License Requirements in the state of California and Oregon. May be required to work nights and weekends as needed and supplement the maintenance crew on a rotating weekend and holiday schedule.

Iowa specialty marks growth in fort dodge, clinic project celebrated wednesday.

The Iowa Specialty Hospital Fort Dodge Clinic on First Avenue South has been open since 2006, but it looks a lot different than it did when its first patients came in the door.

Significant exterior and interior renovations that were just completed were celebrated Wednesday afternoon with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Iowa Specialty Hospital leaders billed the event as a grand re-opening.

“We look really small, but we provide a whole lot,” Dr. Kenneth Adams, a gastroenterologist, said after cutting the green ribbon.

The clinic at 2700 First Ave. S. offers family medicine, gastroenterology, internal medicine, orthopedics including spine surgery, pain management, podiatry and weight loss management. There is a laboratory, x-ray facilities and an MRI machine on site.

“We’ve been really proud of the services we’ve been able to provide here,” said Joetta Promes, the clinic leader.

The staff has 18 providers, including physicians, physicians assistants and advanced registered nurse practitioners. There are an additional 35 employees, including nurses, lab and x-ray technicians and administrative personnel.

An exterior renovation job that gave the front of the building a completely new look was completed in 2023. Interior renovations were also completed.

Iowa Specialty Hospital has had a clinic in Fort Dodge since 1994, according to Promes. She said the clinic moved to its current site in 2006.

Energy is a custom motor yacht launched in 2022 by Amels in Vlissingen , Netherlands.

AMELS are masters in the art of modern Dutch high-value yacht building. The yard is the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands and one of the top superyacht builders in the world. In 2005 AMELS launched the successful LIMITED EDITIONS and delivered the first yacht of the series in 2007. The shipyard also specialises in the build of full-custom superyachts, with the in-construction Project Signature due to become the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands upon her scheduled launch in 2025.

Energy measures 77.8 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.8 feet and a beam of 14.00 feet. She has a gross tonnage of 2,885 tonnes.

For over twenty-five years Espen Oeino International has been hard at work designing custom motor yachts for an international clientele from Japan in the East to Seattle in the West.

Her interior design is by Zuretti.

Energy also features naval architecture by Damen Yachting.

They exceeded all expectations.

The top deck’s helipad forward is a versatile space outside heliops – sun lounge, al fresco yoga studio with wraparound ocean views, a space for elevated entertainment served by the statement bar, assorted lounging areas and dayhead inside. The jacuzzi and sun pads aft allow guests to bask in the sun.

The bridge deck music lounge is designed for acoustic excellence. There is a Steinway baby grand piano and marble-topped bar. The entertainment continues in the open-air lounge aft, guests can find some privacy on the sofa forward of the bridge or keep going on the walkaround sidedecks to appreciate the anchorage from every possible vantage point.

Through full-height glass, the owner’s deck bedroom overlooks, and has direct access to, a private foredeck terrace, which has an intimate lounge beneath the overhang, a jacuzzi and a mesmerising marble firepit amid armchairs and chaises longues. Walkaround sidedecks lead past a private lounge and bar, which opens on three sides to let in the sound and scent of the ocean, to open-air dining for up to 18 guests and one of the largest pools on any yacht, anywhere.

On the main deck, the ocean connection extends to both VIP suites, each of which has full-height sliding glass walls opening onto a private balcony at the forward end of extra-wide sidedecks. Moving aft, inside or out, you pass a boardroom-style office, martial arts room, lobby with lower- to bridge-deck glass elevator, formal dining room, two-tender boat deck and watertoy store, and an intimate waterfall lounge.

Whether your guests arrive at the lower deck’s swim platform or the sea-level lobby, all four lower deck guest cabins, completing accommodation for 14 guests in seven suites across three decks, have step-free access past the beauty salon to the beach club and wellness spa aft. There is a huge sea terrace outside the gym and massage room to port, and to starboard a sauna and hammam either side of a relaxation room with another sea terrace.

Twin 3,046hp MTU diesel engines give her a top speed of 17 knots, and cruising speed of 13.5 knots and an easy transatlantic range of 5,000nm. Two sets of stabilisers ensure comfort on arrival.

Built in the Netherlands with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the 1,790GT superyacht was delivered in 2017 as the second hull of the Dutch shipyard's 242 LE series and has only been used by its original owner.  New Secret 's exterior lines are the work of Tim Heywood and she differs from her sistership Plvs Vltra (hull one) in having a completely white superstructure. Her neutral interior, by Winch Design , is characterised by soft lighting and sculptural curves found in the windows and ceilings, giving her a serene ambience.  Accommodating 14 guests across six cabins, New Secret has an owner’s deck with master cabin featuring full-height glazing throughout. The owner's suite overlooks a private foredeck lounge, to which there is direct access, and includes a his-and-hers en suite, office and lounge. Two VIP suites are found on the main deck with a further three large guest cabins on lower deck. There is provision for a crew of 19. Onboard highlights include a large eight-metre pool on the 180-square-metre main deck aft, which is flanked by sun loungers, armchairs, coffee tables and a semi-circular bar. There is access to a dayhead on the starboard-side deck and steps on either side lead down to a large swim platform.  Stepping inside through sliding glass doors, guests can unwind in the lounge, complete with sofas and armchairs. Forward is the formal dining area, where a circular dark gloss walnut table sits underneath a ring of lighting, and an accent wall – which is actually the doors to a china cabinet – displays a solar system of steel rings against a background of pearlescent crystal tiles. Up on the aft deck, the yacht is crowned by a functional touch-and-go helipad and inside is an en suite pilot’s cabin with a single berth and a guest lounge. Meanwhile, the sundeck has a raised Jacuzzi with plenty of space for guests to relax on sunpads or dine in the intimate lounge seating forward. Guests can also access the bridge deck, featuring sofa seating forward of the bridge, with step access from the owner's deck below. While a media lounge faces a large bulkhead-mounted TV, a more relaxed lounge looks aft through an arc of sliding glass doors onto a private aft terrace. Outside, guests can make the most of a fully equipped bar and dining for up to 14 guests beneath the overhang and sun lounge seating. A wellness centre with a large folding sea terrace to starboard is located on the lower deck. The full-beam spa has a dedicated gym, massage room, sauna, steam shower and lounge with juice bar radiating off a central large spa pool. Lower deck shell doors conceal two large tenders and a selection of watertoys, and guests can also make use of the elevator serving lower to bridge decks. Powered by a pair of Caterpillar engines, the yacht boasts a range of 5,000 nautical miles, reaching a top speed of 16.5 knots with a cruising speed of 15 knots. The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902 By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov . The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011. While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London. However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker. The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile. Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.
