The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.”

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.

This story includes material from a staff report by former Free Press reporter Phoebe Wall Howard and from the Bayview Yacht Club.

Posted Jul 14, 2024

CHICAGO, July 14, 2024 – Sanford Burris, William and Ward Kinney’s Maverick team will be etched in Mac Race history as the new race record holder for the fastest Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust in 22 years, earning the honor from Roy E. Disney and Pyewacket .

Maverick also claimed this year’s Royono Trophy for the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition. This year’s southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race, which they completed in 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds, breaking Pyewacket’s record by one hour, six minutes, 11 seconds.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Roy P. Disney, Roy E. Disney's son, upon hearing the news. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is, and what a classic sailboat race it is! Many congratulations to the owner, the crew and the boat, Maverick .”

Burris, from Kirtland, Ohio, sails with his sons and many longtime friends on the carbon fiber Andrews 80 they have spent the past three years upgrading. Joining the 20 crew onboard is Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan.

The team celebrated briefly as the Maverick team crossed the Race to Mackinac finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island lighthouse … and then kept on sailing.

Maverick is one of 25 sailboats competing in this year’s “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and the Bayview Mackinac races, which means they will continue into Lake Huron, heading south to Port Huron for a total of 565 statute miles (495 nautical miles).

What does it take to break the Race to Mackinac record?

Many factors need to align for record-setting conditions, especially over a 333 statute-mile (289 nautical-mile) race that is well known for multiple weather patterns in a short time span. This has earned the race its moniker as “America’s Offshore Challenge.”

“Most important is a southerly wind direction and strength, combined with advancements in boats and sails,” said Winn Soldani, chair for the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. “Plus you add in last night’s storms that brought increased breeze and it’s literally the perfect setup for a record-breaking year.

“On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, we congratulate the Maverick team for an incredible accomplishment.”

This year, the Race put a special emphasis on encouraging and attracting new boats and sailors. Across the 250-strong fleet, 26 new entries (10 percent) and more than 380 sailors (20 percent) are experiencing their first Mac. The Mac Race, known as America’s Offshore Challenge™, begins in front of Chicago’s magnificent skyline and finishes 289 nautical miles (333 statute miles) north on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, at Michigan’s iconic Mackinac Island.

Next year, the Chicago Yacht Club celebrates its 150-year anniversary.

100th Port Huron-to Mackinac Island Sailboat Race draws large crowds

More than 300 sailboats packed into the Black River to join the 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat race on July 20, 2024.

Every year John Lusk meets his friends near the Port Huron Yacht Club, setting up camp in the shade of the same tree to watch the parade of boats heading to the start of the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race.

It's a fun tradition among the friends, but every year it seemed there were a few less boats than in the previous race. That was, until this year when they sat down to watch the centennial race. The 100 year celebration seemed to breathe new life into the race, drawing more boats, more sailors and more onlookers.

"We were just talking about the number of boats and how it's a throwback to previous years," Lusk said.

Sailboats from across the country were gathered on the Black River Monday to participate in the 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race. According to the race's website, 316 teams were registered to compete in the centennial race, about 100 more than joined in 2023.

This year's race follows the original course created in 1925, which will take boats north along the shoreline before heading west, passing south of Bois Blanc Island and finishing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island. This course is 204 nautical miles.

Kenneth Tanner, a Grosse Pointe resident joining the race as part of the California Girl's crew, said he was proud to join in the 100th race. He said he also sailed in the 100th Chicago-to-Mackinac Island Boat Race in 2008.

"It's a classic race, and to do this for the centennial race is an honor," Tanner said.

It's Bobby Bloomfield's first time participating in the race, though he has experience from other races. He joined the crew of the Siochail through an acquaintance who recommended him for the sailing team.

Bloomfield is working with one of the most experienced sailors in the race, Brian Geraghty. He's participated in the race every year it was run for 44 years and was the historian for the Bayview Yacht Club.

Geraghty said he accepted Bloomfield on the team because he's from Chatman, Ontario and likes the recruit Canadians to join the race.

Right next to the Siochail was the Contender. Scott Graham, who travelled from Florida to Port Huron to participate in the race said this year it is taking place on his 50th anniversary, so it's an uniquely special occasion.

"It's a hallmark race and it's special to be joining with my dad," Graham said.

The Contender won the M Class race in 2016, a feat they're hoping they can pull of a second time.

Down the river is another team looking to add a win under their belts, the crew of the Pirate. Captain Jeff Henderson, another Florida resident, has won the Class P Cruising race running the 1925 course nine times in almost 50 years of competing.

"Each year is better than the year before," Henderson said.

Each crew member wears a shirt with a pirate on the back saying "Give us the island and no one gets hurt," a cheeky reference to their destination in the race. Henderson said his boat brings a long history with it, having been built in France in 1992 (the crew is sure this is lucky because crew member Pierre Fleury is a French native) and that he bought it in the British Virgin Islands.

"The trick is to be lucky, and to have the right crew when it matters," Henderson said.

The race can be tracked online at https://bycmack.com/tracking/ .

Politics | U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum joins calls for Biden to drop out of presidential race

Mccollum says democrats should consider gov. tim walz for vice president.

Betty McCollum portrait

In a statement released Friday, McCollum, who has represented St. Paul and the east metro for more than two decades, said Biden should step aside. She joins a growing chorus of Democrats calling for a new presidential nominee as doubts grow about the 81-year-old Biden’s age and fitness for office.

“Winning in November and defeating Trump’s dangerous, hate-filled agenda must be Democrats’ sole focus,” McCollum said. “To give Democrats a strong, viable path to winning the White House, I am calling upon President Biden to release his delegates and empower Vice President (Kamala) Harris to step forward to become the Democratic nominee for President.”

McCollum said delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August should consider adding Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to the ticket, citing the need for a “strong Midwestern running-mate.”

A portrait of Gov. Tim Walz

A growing number of Democratic members of Congress are calling for the president to step aside and allow the vice president to take his place in the race. As of Friday afternoon, more than 30 had called for Biden to drop out.

McCollum is the second member of Minnesota’s congressional delegation to call on Biden to end his reelection bid. Democratic Rep. Angie Craig, who represents the south Twin Cities suburbs, called on Biden to step aside earlier this month.

Dean Phillips, who represents the west metro suburbs and attempted to run for president himself, has not called on Biden to step aside, though he has said he believes the president is too old to run for a second term.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Sen. Tina Smith have not called for Biden to step aside. U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents a district that includes Minneapolis, has been a vocal supporter of Biden.

Walz has not called for Biden to step down and has been a vocal supporter of the president — even as concerns grew about Biden’s poor performance in his June debate with Donald Trump.

After a meeting of Democratic governors at the White House earlier this month, Walz said he believed Biden was “fit for office.”

Sports | Sanford Burris skippers Maverick to record time in Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

Boats participating in the Race to Mackinac pass by Navy Pier at the start of the race on Saturday, July 13, 2024. (Vincent Alban/for Chicago Tribune)

That was 1 hour, 6 minutes and 11 seconds faster than the record set by Roy P. Disney aboard Pyewacket in 2002.

The Maverick crew celebrated briefly as it crossed the finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island Lighthouse on Sunday. It then kept sailing as part of the “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and Bayview Mackinac races that continued into Lake Huron for a total of 496 nautical miles.

Maverick also claimed the Royono Trophy for being the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition of the race, which is sponsored by Wintrust. Southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race.

Burris, from Kirtland, Ohio, is co-owner of the carbon fiber Andrews 80 along with William and Ward Kinney. Burris sails with his sons and many longtime friends. Also among the 20-member crew is Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Disney, a grandnephew of Walt Disney. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is and what a classic sailboat race it is.”

Rep. betty mccollum calls on biden to withdraw from presidential race.

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., has joined the growing number of Democrats asking President Biden to withdraw his re-election bid. The congresswoman Friday endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's standard-bearer and suggested Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

"Winning in November and defeating [former President Donald] Trump's dangerous, hate-filled agenda must be Democrats' sole focus," McCollum said in a statement. "To give Democrats a strong, viable path to winning the White House, I am calling upon President Biden to release his delegates and empower Vice President Harris to step forward to become the Democratic nominee for president."

McCollum's move against Biden comes as more Democratic lawmakers have called on the 81-year-old president to end his reelection bid, a turn of events largely stemming from what was widely viewed as a disastrous debate against former President Donald Trump at the end of June.

The Associated Press reported that Biden, who was also diagnosed with COVID-19 this week, was huddling with family and a few longtime aides at his beach house in Delaware on Friday as he resists the efforts to push him aside. Campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon said on MSNBC that the campaign knows there's been slippage in support for Biden but that they still see "multiple paths" to beating Trump.

"We have a lot of work to do to reassure the American people that, yes, he's old, but he can win," O'Malley Dillon said.

McCollum's public call came the day after Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination during the party's national convention in Wisconsin, where he announced Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate. McCollum suggested that Walz, her former colleague in the Minnesota delegation, would be an effective rival for Vance.

"If she becomes our Democratic nominee, Vice President Harris will need a strong Midwestern running mate and I encourage her and the Democratic delegates to consider a successful leader who has been a teacher, soldier, football coach, former member of Congress, and a proven winner — Minnesota's Gov. Tim Walz," McCollum said.

McCollum, the senior member of Congress from Minnesota, has represented her St. Paul-area district for more than two decades. She sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee and has long been an ally of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Distinguishing McCollum from some of the more vulnerable Democratic officeholders who have called on Biden to step down is that she has typically faced only nominal opposition in her strongly Democratic district.

Late Friday, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who is in a tough race for reelection, called for Biden to step aside, the Associated Press reported. That brings the total number of Democratic members of Congress urging him to drop out to nearly three dozen.

McCollum is the second Minnesota Democrat to urge Biden to step down . Rep. Angie Craig, who represents a largely suburban swing district, made the same request days after Biden's debate against Trump. Rep. Dean Phillips, who earlier this year pursued an unsuccessful challenge to Biden for the presidential nomination built around a critique of Biden's fitness for office, has so far refrained from demanding he step down.

Rep. Ilhan Omar is the only Democrat in the state's House delegation to back Biden's bid for a second term. In a social media post Thursday, she said it was "shameful" that several Democratic leaders anonymously called for the president to step down.

"It's a lack of leadership, and it's making all Democrats look bad," Omar wrote on X. "Whatever this mess leads to will not undo the damage that has already been inflicted. May God help us all."

Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith on Friday said Biden himself must decide whether to remain at the top of the party's ticket. Three of their fellow Senate Democrats have now called on Biden to step down, including New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich on Friday.

Walz echoed Klobuchar and Smith on Thursday, adding that Democratic voters cast their primary votes based on priorities that include reproductive rights, climate change and labor rights.

While Biden won Minnesota and all other states that held primaries, easily clinching the delegates needed to win the nomination ahead of the convention, Walz left the door open for another nominee.

"The decision of who that candidate will be really falls upon President Biden at this time," Walz said.

Star Tribune staff writer Chris Vondracek and the Associated Press contributed to this story.
