Spend Your Summer On The Water: Your Complete Guide To Buckeye Lake

With water levels returning to normal, Summer is about to kick-off at one of Central Ohio’s favorite lakes. Buckeye Lake hasn’t always been the serene, 3,000-acre lake that it is today. What started as a swamp land called Buffalo Lick has grown into a popular boating destination in Central Ohio.

The lake even had its own amusement park, which remained open until the 1970s. In the height of its popularity, the park attracted nearly 50,000 visitors per day, and performers such as Bob Hope, Guy Lombardo, Count Basie, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Although much of the amusement park has been torn down, the local community hasn’t forgotten it.

Today, Buckeye Lake is a mix of vacation rentals and full-time residents, giving people a chance to escape the hustle of the city with a quiet, small town vibe. The lake is also dotted with small islands, most of which hold private residences, while others are open to the public. There are 21 islands on the lake and 18 of them with homes.

From restaurants to boat rentals to community activities, Buckeye Lake has a lot to offer visitors. One of the biggest celebrations of the year takes place on the 4th of July. The Boat Parade is one of the highlights of the holiday, with floats from across the lake participating in the celebration.

Although the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club is not open to the public, you don’t have to be a resident at the lake to become a member. The Club has many amenities, including a pool, clubhouse, sailing teams and racing teams. Several events are held throughout the year, one of the most popular being the Antique Wooden Boat Show.

Buckeye Lake State Park is a great place to have a cookout and just relax. There are several picnic areas, including 3 large shelters that are reservable. Fishing, boating, and waterfowl hunting are all allowed at the park. The beaches have been closed since 2015, but they could re-open this summer with water levels on the rise .

Lost Columbus: Buckeye Lake Hosted Two Large Ku Klux Klan Rallies in the 1920s

The indiana klan leader, who had a summer home there, called members to central ohio for gatherings that drew up to 100,000 people..

Any community might welcome an organization seeking to be “a dignified, dependable agency for the achievement of civic righteousness.” But what if that organization also espoused the principle that the American population of white citizens “has proved its value and should not be mongrelized” through intermarriage or even association with other races, nationalities or non-Protestant faiths? This was the Ku Klux Klan, its name derived from the Greek word for “circle.” In the 1920s, it was at the peak of its membership, power, influence and (especially) violence, focused in the Midwest and Indiana in particular.  

Klan members were not only everyday racists: the governor of Indiana at the time was a member, as was the mayor of Newark, Ohio. And the “grand dragon” of the Indiana Klan, D.C. Stephenson, had a summer home at Buckeye Lake. There, in the mid-1920s, he called Klansmen together for two massive “Klonklaves.” 

Buckeye Lake, once a canal reservoir and later the site of a state park (as it is today), had interurban train service from Downtown Columbus and hosted Klan gatherings in July 1923 and August 1925, aided by the interurban company’s provision of special cars to be sure everyone arrived on time. The 1925 gathering boasted attendance of more than 75,000 and possibly as high as 100,000. One poster, headed “Call of the Klan,” promoted the 1923 Klonklave, stating, “Klansmen From All States Invited to See Ohio Klux.” A photo from the 1925 get-together shows armed Klan “policemen,” all securely hidden in robes and hoods. National speakers and several marriages between Klansmen and spouses, called “Camellias,” were featured at the gatherings; their children were “Ku Klux Kiddies.”  

By the end of the 1920s, legal woes and possibly more enlightened social attitudes led to a withering away of most Klan chapters, though even today, there may be 3,000 to 6,000 members nationally. And not long after the 1925 Klonklave, Indiana’s governor and Newark’s mayor were indicted for corruption. Late in 1925, grand dragon Stephenson was convicted of rape and second-degree murder and received a life sentence. Stephenson was released from prison in 1950 but returned after a few months because of a parole violation; he was released again in 1956 and died, apparently unrepentant, in 1966.

Millersport news: 39th annual Buckeye Lake Tour of Homes this Sunday

• Tour of Homes enters 39th year

The Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association will host its 39th annual Buckeye Lake Tour of Homes from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The boat tour will start from the Buckeye Lake Winery, 13750 Rosewood Road at Fairfield Beach. Tour times will last for approximately two hours starting at 10:30 a.m. with departure times following at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The event will proceed rain or shine. Parking will be at the Buckeye Lake Winery. Pre-sale Tickets are $25.00 each, Day-of-Tour Tickets will be $30. Each tour will feature homes on West Bank Drive, Southbank Road, North Bank Road and Orchard Island. Schmidt’s Food Truck will be at the Millersport Lions Clubhouse parking lot from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The clubhouse is located at 2905 Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. Come out and support Lions charities.

Food pantry

The Millersport Community Food Pantry will be open on Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The Pantry is located at 2315 Weekly Ave. in Millersport. The Pantry serves Millersport, Walnut Township and surrounding areas.

Festival resident hangers

Sweet Corn Festival Resident hangers for Millersport residents living inside the village will not be mailed out this year. Hangers will be available for pick up at the Millersport Village municipal building, 2245 Refugee Street in Millersport. The office will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Two resident passes per person are available.

Walnut Township

The Walnut Township Trustees held an emergency meeting Aug. 2. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the appointment of a fiscal officer to fill the vacant position of Fiscal Officer that was created by the resignation of Pam Underwood.

The trustees entered into executive session to discuss personnel matters. Also on the agenda was approval of necessary items to maintain the functions necessary to carry out the day-to-day operations of the township’s fiscal office until a fiscal officer is appointed by the trustees.

Senior citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met Aug. 2 in the Millersport Lions Clubhouse on Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. President Richard Neff welcomed the 15 members and one guest who were present. Nancy Davis offered the prayer before the potluck lunch. The club provided fish for the main entrée. The Kitchen Committee for August is Dave and Marty Holtz.

Following lunch, President Neff conducted the business meeting. Several members were listed in Member Concerns. Mary Sue Slater was welcomed back after a lengthy illness. Mary Dupler and Bill Yates were recognized with August birthdays. Everyone received a door prize. The meeting was adjourned for cards and Bingo.

The next meeting will be held at the clubhouse at noon on Aug. 16. Anyone who is 55 years of age and older is encouraged to join for fun, food and fellowship.

Board of education

The Walnut Township Local School District Board of Education held a special meeting Aug. 1 in the Laker Learning Center of Millersport High School. The board entered into executive session to discuss the employment and compensation of a public employee.

Board recommendations were approved for an increase of 3% based on performance of goals for the treasurer and an increase of 2% based on performance of goals for the superintendent for the 2024-2025 contract year.

Superintendent Recommendations were approved for a contract between Walnut Township Local Schools and PresenceLearning, Inc. effective Aug. 1. The 2024-2025 School Breakfast/Lunch Program was approved.

Minnesota Yacht Club festival will return in 2025 with an added third day of music

The festival is set again for July 18-20 following a strong turnout in the St. Paul event’s inaugural year.

The dates have been set for the Minnesota Yacht Club music festival’s return to St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park in July 2025, and there’s already one glaring difference from its inaugural year: Three days are listed instead of two.

“Thanks to your support, we’re extending to THREE days,” festival organizers announced in social media posts Tuesday morning.

The days confirmed in the announcement are July 18-20, a Friday through a Sunday. This year’s MYC fell on the same weekend but only ran Friday and Saturday , with performers including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani, Gary Clark Jr., Joan Jett and the Offspring.

There was little doubt the festival would be back for another year. It drew a near-capacity crowd of around 35,000 fans each day of its 2024 run, and — aside from some intermittently long concession lines — it earned relatively high marks from organizers and audience members alike.

“We were very happy with the inaugural festival this year,” MYC promoter Tim Sweetwood of C3 Presents, which put on the festival, said in a statement. “Our team has continued to work closely with Saint Paul city officials and collectively determined expanding into a third day made a lot of sense. We are thrilled to return with an all-new lineup July 18-20, 2025 and will continue to highlight the arts and people of Minnesota.”

Organizers have not yet offered more info on the second-year plans, including what kind of an impact the added third day will have on ticket prices. The only link included in Tuesday’s announcement was to pre-book rooms at hotels affiliated with the festival.

Fans can likely expect to pay about $100 more for the general admission passes for three days instead of two. Those started around $200 in early bird pricing for this past year’s festival before being bumped up to $255. The many different VIP options — $255-$1,395 for two-day passes in 2024 — will also go up exponentially with the extra day.

Texas’ C3 Presents specializes in multiday festivals such as Lollapalooza in Chicago, Austin City Limits, Boston Calling and New York’s Governors Ball. Those fests all last three days, too.

What typically happens with these festivals is: Early bird tickets go on sale in the fall or winter at discount prices without any of next year’s artists being named, then the music lineup gets announced in the winter or spring, and then tickets go on sale at their standard prices.

In other words, expect many more updates on MYC 2025 between now and next summer.
