The Freedom is the largest United States Coast Guard Certified Sailing Vessel in St. Augustine. We are dedicated to providing an exceptional and safe experience to all our guests. We are certified for 41 passengers, but we have reduced our capacity on all our sails to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience  for all.

T he Schooner Freedom is St. Augustine’s Premier tall ship.  76 feet of steel, Freedom was built in Norfolk, Virginia and brought to St. Augustine in 2001 by owners Captain John Zaruba, and his wife, Admiral Sarah.  Freedom is the only schooner charter vessel between Charleston and the Florida Keys.  With nearly 2400 square feet of sail, she is an honorable testament to naval history and to the privateers of the early 1800s. 

Freedom is a gaff-rigged topsail schooner, and a highlight to any Saint Augustine vacation . Family owned and operated, love, grit and honor is poured into every crevice of this ship, and it shows in our Captains’ and Crews’ vast knowledge of sailing history and their deep passion for the ocean.  If you don’t happen to catch Captain John or Admiral Sarah on a sail, chances are one of their children Capt Jack or Sydney will be onboard. Wesley Nogueira, Executive Chef, Khloe’s Kitchen.

Wesley Nogueira was born in 1987 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A few years later he moved to the states and resided in Philadelphia, PA. Read More His Filipino mother raised his younger brother and himself by ingraining hardworking values derived from his Filipino and Brazilian backgrounds.

Wesley was very fond of the kitchen at a young age and found himself always being around his mother and her friends while they cooked simple Filipino dishes. At the age of 15 he moved to Jacksonville, Florida with his mom and brother. While there, Wesley attended Robert E. Lee Senior High School and University of North Florida. While in college he worked at a few family owned restaurants but it was not until the birth of his daughter Khloe where he was determined to turn an everyday job of cooking into his passionate career. Wesley decided to drop out of college and pursue a career in the kitchen.

Work History

He started working at 2009 in Bistro Biscottis (bbs), a highly established local casual dining restaurant. He worked under the influence of Chef Carlos Ramirez and Chef Josh Agan. In 2014 at the age of 27, he was promoted to Executive Chef at bbs. While at bbs, Wesley has used his platform to bring new age dishes to the Jacksonville area and has worked numerous events with local chefs such as Tom Gray and Matthew Medure.

In May 2017, Wesley started his chef/owned catering company called Khloe’s Kitchen inspired by his daughter. He serves modern-eclectic inspired cuisine obtained from his fine dining knowledge and his upbringing from his Filipino-Brazilian roots.

Chef James W. Phelan, J. William Culinary

The pursuit of highest-level cuisine has taken James Phelan on an incredible journey. Upon leaving college to pursue his culinary passions, Read More James spent three years harvesting and honing his skills at the acclaimed Tuscan restaurant, Lo Spiedo di Noble, in Greensboro, North Carolina. By 1999, the next logical step was culinary school, and the choice was The French Culinary Institute in New York City. The culinary Mecca of American provided James with an advanced level of knowledge and skill and prepared him for the challenge of running his own kitchens.

With an honors diploma in hand, James moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2002. After pursuing a position with the Medure Restaurant Group, he was placed at Restaurant Medure, in Ponte Vedra, where he would have to prove his worth. In time, James would take the helm at Restaurant Medure, a position he would hold for three years. The next step within the group would be to become the Chef at the highly honored Matthew’s Restaurant, as well as running the company’s catering arm and a casual cafe, Take Away Gourmet. AAA recognized the restaurants at which James was the Executive Chef with “Four Diamonds” for five consecutive years and “Five Diamonds” for two years.

As his career was building, a new passion was growing stronger: health and fitness. Over the years, James noticed many gym-goers struggling with the diet part of their health. Most either ate a bland, redundant diet or cheated on their diet often. He knew he could create meals that would remedy these issues and allow people to fully reap the rewards of their hard work. In March of 2011, James left his position with the Medure Restaurant Group and started J. William Culinary, a company that produces healthy, organic, fresh fitness meals for active people.

Since, J. William Culinary has grown and diversified, accommodating a wide variety of nutritional needs. Clients include elite athletes from the NFL, UFC, and CrossFit, fitness enthusiasts and busy professionals.

In June of 2014, James’ first cookbook, Paleo Grilling: A Modern Caveman’s Guide to Cooking with Fire, hit bookstore shelves and became available online. It has achieved awards from Paleo Magazine and was the answer to a question on the television show Jeopardy! James has also written for Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Journal, Jacksonville Magazine and other local publications. James is currently working one his second book, The Adventurer Cookbook.

Other projects include Curated Culinary Adventures in Alaska, Thailand, Western US, South Australia, Belize, Aruba and Nicaragua. James also took off “The Fittest on the Planet”, preparing meals for the staff, media, attendees and athletes at the 2015-17 CrossFit Games. In 2018, after years of local television, James took on a national culinary audience as a chef on the Food Network cooking show Cooks vs Cons.

• If canceled by us dues to weather, you can reschedule your trip for a later date with no expiration or receive a full refund. Your cancellation email will have instructions on how to re-book your trip or request a refund.

How to Cancel or Reschedule

•  A cancellation notice by email to [email protected] is required at least 4 days before your scheduled tour in order to receive a full refund. All no show’s or cancellations within the 4 days of your cruise are responsible for full payment.
• Any reschedules within the 4 days of your cruise will receive a re-booking fee in the amount of 25% of your base price. Please email FWT staff at [email protected] to cancel or reschedule.

Sailing with Marty was my first experience as an adult sailing off the coast. We had a wonderful trip starting in St Augustine. First, we were given some basic information about the boat and safety, the other crew members and our destination. Then we were off. We sailed up to Amelia Island for most of the day and then docked at Fernandina Beach marina. We had a short walk into downtown and had a wonderful meal. It was also a great way to really get to know the other members of the crew. The next morning we set off and sailed north to Cumberland Island. Once on the island, we explored the ruins, had a nice hike and enjoyed dinner on the boat. The next step was amazing. We headed off into the sunset on the boat and sailed all night. It was truly exhilarating sailing through the night. At all times, I felt safe but the excitement got me hooked on sailing. Marty is honest, helpful, and always cheerful; exactly what you want in a captain.

This past summer my husband and I had an awesome time on Summerwind. The weather was warm so it was a great time sailing to downtown St Augustine and simply grabbing a mooring ball eating a yummy lunch with our family and diving off the back for a refreshing dip. The following day we took the boat several miles out in the ocean with all the sails up, music on in the cabin; a complete escape from work etc. At day’s end we sailed right up to Caps On The Water restaurant for my birthday where we enjoyed a seafood dinner and drinks. We can’t wait to plan another visit aboard Summerwind, It was a complete vacation over only a single weekend. Many thanks.

Sailing with Marty is truly a treat... He and his trusty Yacht are one with the mighty ocean. Years at sea and behind the helm show, and pay off in high seas or calm. But don't get too comfortable because he is always game to teach you the ropes and be sure you are part of the adventure. There is nothing more peaceful and fulfilling than a day at sea with Marty. Thanks for the memories!

We had such a peaceful experience taking in the joys of the sea while sailing with Marty. He was willing to let us take on roles to help sail the boat (and willing to let us fail, too!) We brought along our two little children (2.5 years and 10 months) and they enjoyed playing below deck and seeing the beautiful scenery sailing by. We were grateful for Marty’s expertise, generosity and passion for sailing!

I've sailed with Captain Marty several times and it was a joy. One of the trips was a longer sail from Puerto Rico to Saint Augustine, Florida in May, 2013. We had a great time and I felt totally comfortable with Marty as our Captain. His sailing and navigating experience made me feel very at ease while on the water - he is a safety conscious sailor. I would give the trip 5 stars!

Being a novice on boats, this was a very exciting time for me. Marty and the crew made me feel very comfortable aboard the Yacht. We sailed down the Cooper River, under the incredible Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and into Charleston Harbor. I enjoyed seeing the USS Yorktown and the submarines. The view of the city of Charleston and the historic homes was amazing! Marty is very knowledgeable about historic sites. Seeing Fort Sumter from the water was also a memorable experience. I would rate this sail as 5 stars

Dan was great. Professional in every way possible. The experience was beyond words can express. Boat was in incredible condition. The family had a memorial or day we will never forget. We will most definitely be calling Dan again to rent. Highly recommend for your perfect tritoon/pontoon boating experience. It was like having our own luxury boat for the day.

Michael was punctual and offered a very clean, well maintained boat. The rates were very fair and in fact we called to extend the rental for 2 more hours. Will definitely be renting again we we come back to Palm Coast.

One of the most beautiful ways to enjoy St.Augustine is from the water, and nothing beats moving along under the power of the wind, watching the seabirds glide and dive, and listening for that "p-puff" that announces dolphins playing or feeding nearby.

St. Augustine Sailing Charters leave from Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor , a premier marina on the inland side of the Vilano Bridge. The charters offer unique sailing experiences perfect for small groups, private parties, intimate events, or a getaway for two.

St. Augustine Sailing's premium charters start with two hours on the water and can include full-day or even overnight charters. Guests may sail on the local rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway, or the Atlantic Ocean.

Every charter is captained by an experienced and knowledgeable U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain.

An Introduction to Sailing

St. Augustine Sailing is owned by well-known and highly acclaimed A.S.A. Sailing Instructor, Rose Ann Points. Rose Ann and her team enjoy turning adventurers into sailors. St. Augustine Sailing offers several affordable charters that provide an introduction to sailing — and that make excellent gifts. Some are fully hands-on, others let the guests relax in affordable luxury, and all trips can whet a guest's appetite for more time on the water -- in a sailboat.

• Intro to Sailing offers two to four people the opportunity to learn (or brush up on) the basics  — including sail handling, steering, and finding the wind. They use 21 or 22-foot Hunters sailboats, sturdy sloops that offer a comfortable cockpit and the chance to handle the two most common sails, a main and a jib. Intro to Sailing can be booked here . 
• Learn the Ropes sets out in a larger boat, a beautiful 349 Jeanneau, and the crew/instructors provide more detailed instruction. Before leaving the dock, they will discuss what each person wants to learn so that the lesson can address novice issues and concerns. Learn the Ropes can be booked here .

St. Augustine Sailing's Captained Charter Options

• Charters can be booked for daytime or evening sails.
• Affordable Luxury, St. Augustine Sailing's Sip N Sail can last one or two hours and includes a wine tasting with two to six passengers on board. Two or more bottles of wine will be available for sipping as the boat sails along St. Augustine's shore on trips that can be scheduled for morning, afternoon, or evening. One-hour cruises and two-hour cruises can be booked here . All must be 18 or older. 
• Private charters for two offer romance on the water for a date night (or perhaps a surprise proposal).
• Private charters offer views of natural areas along the Intracoastal Waterway or the open ocean. Ocean sails have a minimum of three hours.
• Themed sailing parties are available to celebrate a birthday, bachelor or bachelorette weekend, or other special events.
• Corporate charters are used for team building or to reward a team for reaching their goal.
• Seasonally, St. Augustine Sailing offers special sailing cruises, including multiple packages for the Nights of Lights season .

Every charter can be customized to include a wine tasting with St. Augustine Sailing's sommelier, a luxurious four-course dinner with an onboard chef, or a decadent dessert sail. Every team member at St. Augustine Sailing strives to provide each guest with a premier on-the-water sailing charter experience .

Land and Sea Tours

St. Augustine Sailing has teamed up with St. Augustine Experiences , so visitors can see and taste the best of St. Augustine in one tour that includes a walking tour of historic downtown — featuring some of the area's favorite foodie places — and a two-hour cruise aboard one of St. Augustine Sailing's luxury yachts. Visitors may choose from three options.

Themed Sailing Cruises, Available Year-Round

St. Augustine Sailing currently offers a brunch cruise on any day of the week. The cruise includes mimosas and brunch tidbits while sailing on a 35-foot monohull. Shared and private cruises are available. Go here to book a brunch cruise.

A.S.A. Sailing Lessons

St. Augustine Sailing, an American Sailing Association (A.S.A.) teaching center, offers classes for beginners and for more experienced sailors. Visitors who choose to include a day or two of sailing instruction in their itinerary will have a unique vacation and set themselves up for a lifetime of fun on the water. Many visitors come to St. Augustine to enjoy an outstanding sailing course and have fun in the city when the classes end. 

St. Augustine Sailing provides basic sailing instruction for those who want to have the skills to crew for friends or in a local race. Classes are taught on forgiving, but responsive 21 and 22-foot open sailboats, that are perfect for learning boat handling.

Additional classes on larger sloops offer more in-depth instruction for basic coastal cruising and basic bareboat chartering. Those who attain the highest level A.S.A. certificate can become certified bareboat skippers who can confidently take a boat on a week's cruise, having learned the basics of navigating, provisioning, sailing off-shore, anchoring, and docking. St. Augustine Sailing also offers a class for those who want to know the intricacies of sailing a catamaran.

St. Augustine Sailing's A.S.A. sailing lessons are limited to only four students per boat, so each can practice every skill.

SailTime Membership

Sailors with experience who want to captain a vessel on their own — without the hassle of owning a boat — will find that a SailTime Membership will get them out on the water in a new yacht on a schedule that works for them. SailTime members pay a monthly fee, schedule their chosen boat online, sail, clean it, and walk away until the next time. • The "Sweet and Salty" cruise starts downtown in the morning, focusing on some of the many sweet tidbits found in St. Augustine. Later, guests hop aboard a luxury sailboat and enjoy the salty breezes, wine, and beer while sailing on the Matanzas.
• "Sails and Ales" starts with a two-hour cruise during which local brews and fun cocktails are served. The land portion of the tour will visit historic sites, brew pubs, and taprooms.
• "Surf and Turf" starts on board a beautiful sailboat in the morning, with lite bites, mimosas, and a two-hour cruise. After, a tour of the Historic District includes stops at three of St. Augustine's favorite places to relax over wine, cocktails, and various charcuterie boards.
