Vintage Toy Boats in Luxembourg Gardens
Most visitors strolling Luxembourg Gardens have seen kids pushing adorable little sailboats around the Grand Bassin duck pond, but perhaps you didn’t know this is a tradition that’s almost 90 years old.
In 1927 Clément Paudeau, who had a passion for hand-made wooden boats (with the fabric sails hand-sewn by his wife), had the idea of renting them to children in Luxembourg Gardens for two sous . They became an instant hit.
The tradition of the P’tits Voiliers continues today with the exact same antique boats from Padeau’s era, repainted and given new sails, but otherwise unchanged. Each day when the weather is cooperative you’ll find the little stand next to the Grand Bassin (opposite the Palais de Luxembourg) offering the sailboats for rent: €3.50 for 30 minutes (and, incredibly, it’s all done on the honor system, no ID needed).
Kids can choose boats with different national flags, or even a pirate flag, each unique so they can find theirs in the pond once they’re sailing amongst the other boats. There are no batteries, no remote controls; each kid is given a long stick that, when his or her boat reaches the edge of the pond, is used to turn it around and give it a push to send the boat sailing back across the water. It keeps the children occupied chasing them around the pond while the parents lounge on the famous Luxembourg chairs .
You can also bring your own boat if you don’t want to risk waiting in line for an available one. The antique boats are never for sale (everyone has tried to buy them), but you can purchase the same style at many excellent toy shops in Paris such as NemiNemo (1 rue de Cassette, 6th, near the gardens), or Pain d’Epices in the Passage Jouffroy (Grands Boulevards, 9th). You can find more addresses in France and the US here .
Note that on Sundays between 10am and 3pm the members of the Club Nautique du Luco (the Luxembourg Nautical Club) bring all of their sailboats, motor boats (only silent ones, no loud speed boats), and even submarines to the pond, so it can be a bit crowded, but fun to watch.
There are many other kid-friendly activities in Luxembourg Gardens, including pony rides, marionettes, and one of the best playgrounds in Paris. Read more about it in the Family Fun article.

Paris, France with Kids: Toy Sailboats at Luxembourg Gardens

*Luxembourg Gardens is FREE to the public
* Rent vintage toy sailboats for €6/30 mins at Grand Bassin du Luxembourg, the octagonal pond opposite the palace. The tradition is over 90 years old beginning in 1927 with Clément Paudeau.
*Ludo Jardin is the children’s playground at Luxembourg Gardens. Admission is €3 for children (3y to 12y) and €1 per adult. Children under 3 is FREE.
We take it easy this morning. Cole walks to boulangerie to get a late breakfast and brings it home. Delicious! Get ready for the day and plan to have a nice relaxing day at Luxembourg Gardens and head home early to get the kids to bed at a decent hour. Take train to Luxembourg Gardens. It is a sunny and hot day! Walk into the gardens past the palace and stop and see the beautiful fountain! Keep walking to the octagon shaped pond with vintage toy sailboats. V wants to check how much to rent a boat for the kids to play. Pay 6 euros for a boat for 30 mins. Man renting boats tells me “Portugal for you” – our boat is red and green with letters PT on the sail. Bring a boat and stick back for the kids and they are so excited! They chase the boat and push it with the stick all over the pond with the other children. So fun and a memory I will never forget. Definitely worth the 6 euros! The gardens are gorgeous and after returning the boat we walk and find a bench in the shade of the trees. We have a snack and some water, then we walk to the playground. Pay a few euros for tickets for the playground and the kids play and V and C sit on the bench and plan the rest of the day. Get kids ready to leave playground, see the Statue of Liberty replica on the way out of the park, walk to the restaurant. Enjoy a nice lunch at the French restaurant watching people on the street and each kid even gets a Coca Cola included with their kid’s meal! They couldn’t believe it! Take a nice long relaxing lunch then we are back on our feet walking to Notre Dame! Beautiful buildings and charming Parisian streets along the way. Notre Dame still under construction from the fire but we could see the bell towers. Sit and enjoy the view, take photos, kids chase pigeons, then we walk across the bridge and see the Conciergerie near the river Seine. It is beautiful! Walk to our bus stop and ride bus all the way back home to the 11 arrondissement. Take kids home and V helps kids relax and get ready for bed while C walks to the store to get ice cream for the kids. We sit on the patio and eat Magnum bars and ice cream Mars bars in the evening sunshine and breeze. It is such a lovely evening! Put kids to bed! Goodnight!

What to see in the Luxembourg Gardens Paris France
1. enjoy the beauty of the gardens.
The Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris is a spectacular garden that you simply must experience during your trip to Paris.
The Luxembourg Gardens were created under the direction of Queen Marie de’ Medici in 1612 and are inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy. The central portion of the Luxembourg Gardens is an expansive French style garden with the large octagonal pond (the Grand Bassin).
French-style gardens are formal gardens featuring symmetry and geometric patterns imposing order on nature. Nature is kept in line in the manicured lawns and flower beds, with trees in boxes and flowers in decorative stone urns. Evenly spaced statues ring the French gardens, adding more symmetry and order.
Towards the southern edge of the Paris Luxembourg Gardens are some English-style gardens . These are a bit less formal and have a more natural feel. Enjoy the shady paths as you walk beneath the trees.
What amazed me on my most recent trip to Paris was that even in winter, the Luxembourg Gardens are still bursting with color. You can tell that the gardeners are always making sure the gardens look their best.
Due to the latitude of Paris , the city sees all the seasons, so you can see spring blooms and autumn foliage!
Check out this video to see more of the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens!
2. Watch a Puppet Show
The Jardin du Luxembourg is also home to one of Paris’ best-loved puppet theatres . The young (and young at heart) will love watching a traditional marionette show!
The shows take place at the historic Théâtre des Marionnettes du Jardin du Luxembourg.
The famous French puppet character Guignol (who originated in Lyon France ) has been entertaining guests here since 1933. Guignol even has his own museum in Lyon !
This small theatre offers performances on Wednesdays, weekends, and French public holidays (plus daily during Paris school holidays). If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the family, this is not to be missed.
3. See the Luxembourg Palace
The Palais du Luxembourg is a stunning 17th century palace located in the heart of Paris. It was originally built to be the home and residence of Marie de’ Medici, Queen Mother of France.
After the death of her husband, King Henry IV, Marie de’ Medici became more powerful (as regent to her son, Louis XIII). As such, she decided to build herself a spectacular new palace. The Luxembourg Palace is styled after the Pitti Palace in Florence, where she grew up.
The Palace was decorated in a manner befitting royalty. Artworks included a series of 21 paintings on the life of the queen from master Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens.
Today, it serves as the official residence of the French Senate. Its beautiful architecture is one of the reasons that the Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris.
Group tours are available for the Luxembourg Palace on specific days of the week (reservations required in advance), and you can visit for free during European Heritage Days in the third week of September.
Be sure to take a close look at the clock and the statuary decorating the center of the Luxembourg Palace (right under the French flag).
4. See an art exhibition
There are two museums located within the Jardin du Luxembourg (and both are west of the palace).
The Musée du Luxembourg hosts two exhibitions annually, one in September-January, and the other is in the months of March-July.
The upcoming 2023 show features the collection of Léon Monet, brother to the famous impressionist painter Claude Monet. He was an avid collector of art, and this exhibition includes art by Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro.
The Orangerie du Sénat is an exhibition space in an unlikely location — an orangerie! From June through September, you can enjoy exhibitions ranging from paintings to photography to sculpture. (Bonus: it’s free!)
You may be wondering, why such a limited part of the year? The answer is that in the colder months, the orangerie is filled with trees and plants that need to be protected from the lower temperatures.
5. See the Statue of Liberty
You’ll find a miniature replica of the iconic Statue of Liberty in Jardin du Luxembourg. It was created in 1900 by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi for the the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair).
It stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy, and is a great place to take pictures.
This is a much smaller sister to the Statue of Liberty gifted by the French to the United States, which stands 305′ tall (if you take the measurement from the base of the statue’s pedestal to the tip of Lady Liberty’s torch).
Fun fact: the metal framework supporting the statue was built by Gustave Eiffel, creator of the iconic Eiffel Tower !
Did you know? The full name of the statue is “Liberty Enlightening the World”.
6. Relax on one of the iconic green chairs
The iconic green chairs of the Jardin du Luxembourg are some of the most recognizable features of the park.
The same style of chair is used in the Luxembourg Gardens, the Jardin des Tuileries, and the Palais Royal. On our last visit, I noticed some differences in the colors of the chairs between the gardens. In the Luxembourg Gardens, they’re a sage green, with a deeper forest green shade in the Tuileries.
These charming chairs come in three different types , ranging in comfort level and listed here in order of my preference:
First is the straight-backed chair with no arms. Choose this one if there are no better options, although they do make a good footrest if there are spare chairs to be had. Second is the straight-backed chair with arms. And the best (and hardest to find) is the ‘reclining’ chair, which features a sloped back and arms.
So many people love the charm of the parks and gardens of Paris, that they order the same style of chair to have at home! (And no, the exact colors used in the gardens of Paris are not available for you.)
Relaxing in the beautiful gardens are a great way to spend a sunny afternoon, whether you’re visiting the City of Light with that special someone or taking a solo trip to Paris !
“Paris is a city where time is best to spend doing nothing.” Erich Maria Remarque (Can you follow the advice in this quote about Paris ?)
7. Sail a toy boat on the Grand Bassin
Renting a toy boat to sail on the octagonal Grand Bassin is one of the best things to do at the Luxembourg Gardens.
Sailing your miniature boat will take you back to a simpler time. There are no motors or remote controls — you ‘control’ your boat by pushing it with a long stick. Then enjoy watching the colorful boats drift gently across the shimmering waters of the pond.
This is a great way to keep your kids entertained, and it’s pretty inexpensive to rent one of these iconic boats from the park vendor. (It’s a good idea to carry some cash in France for small expenses like this!)
8. Have a picnic
Having a picnic in the Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the best ways to experience the beauty and tranquility of Paris.
Whether you choose to grab one of the iconic green chairs or spread out a blanket on the lush grass, it’s an unforgettable way to spend your day. And it’s also one of the most romantic things to do in Paris !
The first step is to pick up some delicious French food at one of the many nearby boulangeries and fromageries . There are restaurants and cafes in the park if you’d rather have a meal on the go. Once you’ve got your food, find a spot with a nice view and enjoy!
For us, enjoying a picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens has become one of our traditions when visiting Paris. It’s a great way to relax and recharge — especially if you’re combatting jet lag from your flight.
Another way to fight jet lag is to stay hydrated. Carry along a water bottle and refill it with tap water in Paris — free from the many public fountains!
We’ve learned the hard way not to ‘overplan’ our first day, as jet lag will put a big crimp in those plans. (I still remember Chris’ first trip to Paris, where he fell asleep in the sun during our Seine river cruise!)
9. Enjoy a concert
The Jardin du Luxembourg is renowned for its outdoor concerts, where visitors can enjoy the perfect combination of beautiful music and stunning scenery.
Every summer, the park plays host to a variety of concerts, including classical, jazz, and even popular music performances. Beyond the musical entertainment, these events provide an opportunity to relax in the beautiful gardens.
During one of our picnics in the park, we enjoyed a concert. That was certainly a lovely surprise!
10. See the Fontaine Médicis
The Fontaine Médicis is one of the most striking features of the Jardin du Luxembourg. Located in a corner of the garden near the palaces, it was built by Marie de’ Medici in 1630 to honor her late husband, Henry IV.
This magnificent fountain is styled after the nymphaeums and fountains of the Boboli Gardens in the queen’s home town of Florence. It’s located in a rather atmospheric grotto , with trees lining both sides of the fountain.
The Medici Fountain features an impressive set of statues. The central statue group is called Polyphemus Surprising Acis and Galatea.
If you remember your Greek mythology, Polyphemus was the most famous of the Cyclopes, the race of one-eyed giants. He captured Odysseus, and was blinded by him.
According to mythology Acis was a mortal who loved Galatea, a Neirid. This statue depicts jealous Polyphemus discovering the lovers. (Things don’t go well when you get on the wrong side of a Cyclopes..)
Since this lovely fountain isn’t in plain sight, I think many people miss it. Be sure to take a few moments to seek it out — it’s just to the east of the Palace.
This is one of the things that makes the Luxembourg Gardens one of the best Paris Instagram spots !
11. Check out the apiary
Le Jardin du Luxembourg also has its own apiary (collection of beehives), where visitors can see the resident bees making their delicious honey. This unique attraction not only provides an educational experience for kids but also serves as a reminder that the natural world is all around us, even in the heart of a bustling city like Paris!
Each year there is a honey festival (the Fête du Miel) in the Luxembourg Gardens where you can buy artisanal honey.
The gardens are also home to a beekeeping school which dates from 1856.
12. Play a game of pétanque
Playing pétanque (or boules) in the Luxembourg Gardens is a fun way to experience a quintessentially French pastime .
Pétanque is a game of precision, skill, and strategy, with two teams of two players each taking turns throwing metal balls at a target. Each team takes turns throwing their boules and trying to get as close to the target as possible.
Le Jardin du Luxembourg has multiple pétanque courts, so you can join in on a game or watch as others compete! So come enjoy a game of pétanque at the Jardin du Luxembourg—it’s an experience you won’t forget.
13. Get some exercise
The Jardin du Luxembourg is a great place to get some exercise while enjoying the fresh air and beauty of nature! With its sprawling lawns, lush gardens, and tranquil ponds, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or an invigorating jog.
The paths throughout the park are wide and well-maintained, making them ideal for both novice and experienced runners.
Or, you can get a Paris-Tennis pass and play on the tennis courts in the Luxembourg Gardens to get your heart rate going!
14. Check out the amazing sculptures
Le Jardin du Luxembourg is home to some of the most beautiful sculptures in Paris. From statues of gods and goddesses to historical figures, these works capture the spirit and beauty of French culture.
Ringing the central garden area and Grand Bassin is Serie des Reines et Femmes Illustres — the ‘Series of Queens and Illustrious Women’.
We of course must mention Marie de’ Medici , the French queen who created this lovely garden! (The picture of her statue is up at the top of the post — she wanted me to remind you of her importance to the Luxembourg Gardens!)
This statue represents Sainte Geneviève, the patroness saint of Paris . It is said that she helped to avert an attack of the city by Attila the Hun. I love the details of the statue, like the braid of her hair.
Besides the ‘famous females series’, you’ll find plenty of other statues scattered around the gardens.
Be sure to take some time to stroll through the park to see the incredible classical statues. It’s an open-air museum — with flowers!
15. Enjoy a meal at the Garden
If you’re looking for a meal or a snack, there are many options for you in the Luxembourg Gardens.
Visit one of the food kiosks to grab a drink, a snack, or an ice cream cone.
La Table du Luxembourg is a brasserie where you can enjoy a crêpe with beautiful garden views. You’ll find it right next to the puppet theater.
La Terrasse de Madame is a popular spot to enjoy a meal in the unique and stunning setting of the gardens! The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal no matter the weather.
Tip: In colder weather, warm up with a vin chaud (hot wine)!
16. Explore the Botanical Gardens
The Serres du Jardin du Luxembourg is a botanical garden and features a variety of greenhouses, each filled with lush vegetation and vibrant colors.
One of the most popular features at the Serres du Jardin du Luxembourg is its magnificent orchid collection . Boasting thousands of species from around the world, it’s one of Europe’s largest collections.
From majestic blooms to exotic varieties, these exquisite flowers are sure to captivate your senses. The greenhouses are open to the public during European Heritage Weekend.

Sailing Toy Boats in the Jardin des Tuileries #Paris
October 1, 2013 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: International , Travel
One the most fun and unique activities kids can take partake in Paris is to sail toy boats in the Jardin des Tuileries ( The Tuileries Gardens .) The gardens, which separate the Louvre from the Place de la Concorde , are a cultural walking place for both Parisians and tourists where Maillol statues stand alongside those of Rodin or Giacometti.
My daughter and I wandered by the little pond on our first day in Paris and she was insistent on returning to sail the colorful toy boats. I will admit that this was not on my agenda but it turned out to be the perfect activity after spending three hours touring The Louvre . The pond is literally across the street from the Louvre so it’s a big deal to get there after you finish the museum.
Once my daughter got the hang of it, she basically spent the next hour moving the toy boat across the pond and watching the wind power it to and fro. If not for the fact, the owner closed up, she would have stayed for another hour. I, on the other hand, enjoyed an ice cream cone, relaxing and people watching while sitting in one of Paris’ iconic gardens. The Jardin des Tuileries was created by Catherine de Medicis but only was open to the public after the French Revolution.
Wondering how much it cost? Only 2 Euros for thirty minutes to sail toy boats in the Jardin des Tuileries, a bargain if you ask me for participating in a truly Parisian activity.
Definitely visit the Jardin des Tuileries as it offers so many activities for kids including riding a beautiful carousel, pony rides (in summer) and trampolines.

Those colorful sail boats are really pretty. Are they electric? It looks like your daughter was pushing it with a stick.

That looks like so much relaxed fun. I think I would have enjoyed being there pushing the boats along. I also wouldn’t have minded the ice cream cone. Thank you for hosting.

5 Reasons to Visit the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris
Luxembourg Gardens definitely ranks as a highlight of a visit to Paris. If you go early in the day you’ll find yourself among joggers and roller bladers and local families. Here are my top 5 reasons you will want to spend time in this park if you are in or near Paris.
There’s a Palace
Toy Boats Sail in the Pond
Children can sail colorful wooden toy boats in the lake. On weekends, families rent the boats for a half hour and push them with long poles across the lake. The young ones run around the lake chasing the boats and laughing. It’s simply charming.
The Paris Chairs Sit Scattered Throughout
The iconic green chairs of Paris sit scattered here and there, ready to enjoy. We ate take-away sandwiches made with fresh bread while we sat on chairs in front of the lake. On a sunny day. With children sailing their toy boats. And the palace as a backdrop. Life doesn’t get much better.
Sculptures Decorate the Landscape
Luxembourg Gardens hosts more than 100 sculptures. You will even find a small-scale replica of the American Statue of Liberty. Somehow the friendly French folks took one look at us and knew we are American and should wind around the paths to see this. As their directions were in French, we had to follow their waving arm signals and almost gave up. But rounding a bend under the trees, voila! Lady Liberty herself.
Gardens Bloom with Color
Last but not least, Luxembourg Gardens offers lovely gardens. Flowers, tall trees, and carefully groomed lawns fill the area.
Luxembourg Gardens is open daily and is free.
Where to stay in Paris
Paris offers hundreds of hotels. It’s sometimes overwhelming to start looking for a place to stay. Here are a few suggestions for lovely hotels near some of the sites mentioned. With the excellent Paris Metro system, you will be able to arrive wherever you like with just a little planning.
Near the Invalides : The Hotel de Varenne is exquisitely decorated and includes an inviting patio. You can walk from here to the Invalides as well as the Rodin Museum . (7th arrondissement)
Near the Pantheon : Hotel des Grand Hommes and (right next door) the Hotel les Dames du Pantheon . Both of these elegant hotels are across the street from the Pantheon. From my balcony room at the Grand Hommes I watched the sun rise on the iconic Pantheon. (5th arrondissement)
Near the Museum of the Liberation of Paris : Hotel Serotel Lutece is in the Latin Quarter, not exactly near the museum. But it is within comfortable walking distance. You can also walk from here to the Pantheon, Notre Dame, and Sainte-Chapelle . Not only is this a comfortable, attractive hotel, but I also found the staff here to be extra helpful with directions and information. (5th arrondissement)

Those gardens are beautiful. I am not surprised that there is a Statue of Liberty there since the French gave us the statue.
The palace is gorgeous. I would expect the palace to be surrounded by beautiful gardens and your photos are lovely.
Oh wow what a beautiful place. I would love to see the inside of the palace. the gardens are gorgeous and how neat you can sail boats in the water like that.
From looking at your photos, I imagine there are many more than 5 reasons to visit there! Beautiful. Thanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-dream-of-lifetime.html
How gorgeous!!! I love the little boats on the water!!
It looks familiar – and it looks like Luxembourg! Beautiful buildings. A boy’s dream to play with a real boat in the water:):) Also love the details of the sculptures being displayed! All and all a wonderful post. Thank you so much sharing them with ALL SEASONS:) Have a beautiful week!
What a fabulous place! My only trip to Paris was so short that I didn’t have time to stop by places like this. I would love to visit one day. I can’t resist palaces and gardens. #WordlessWednesday
Oh, my, I would love to wander about there and see the sights. What fabulous, old-world architecture.
I’ve only ever viewed them from above via hotel room, but your photos make me want to actually make a point of seeing it in person! So lovely! 🙂
It is a wonderful park and I remember my children having a lot of fun at the pond with the little boats.I have not been there for some time now – thank you for taking us along.
You captured the gardens so well!! So much better than I did. I wish I would have taken better photos.

It’s a tradition for Parisian children and a must-do for young visitors to the city. Rent a petit bateau (small boat) in the ponds at the Tuileries or Luxembourg gardens and while away the afternoon with some good old-fashioned unplugged nautical fun.
For about 2 euros per half hour, your child is given a numbered sailboat and a poking stick to help launch the wooden vessel in the water. Then the whims of the wind takes it on a voyage under your little admiral’s watchful pursuit. When the boat approaches the edge of the circular basin, your child must meet it and prod it with the stick to send it off in another direction.
My girls were enchanted by the experience, so focused and engaged with the responsibility of this adventure on the high seas. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. My youngest got frustrated when her ship hit the doldrums and didn’t visit the shore as much as her sister’s did (must it always be a competition with siblings?). However, she got her comeuppance when her sister’s boat got entangled in the sails of another and limped along in circles until we could eventually pry them apart.
At least my girls didn’t take a nosedive into the slimy pond like that poor little fella we saw one afternoon. Keep an eye on your little ones as it’s quite easy for them to overreach and lose their balance!
The basin at the Jardin du Luxembourg is larger than the one at the Jardin des Tuileries . My girls got a bit impatient waiting for the winds bring their ships to shore there, whereas the smaller pond at the Tuileries offered them much more opportunity to interact with their boats.
These petits bateaux are such a simple concept, you wonder why this activity isn`t offered in parks all around the world. Then again, this is one of the many distinctive things that make Paris so special.
That pond does look slimy. Wouldn’t like to be the one who has to go in and retrieve sunken vessels.
I’d totally forgotten about this! Two kids, a baguette with cheese, some grapes and hours of endless fun. (Unfortunately I don’t have any photos since this was in my pre-blogging days). But thanks for reminding me of good memories.
My daughter would LOVE this! Thanks for the enjoyable post.
Loved seeing this when we were in Paris on our honeymoon. Would like to go back there with my son so he can experience it!
We missed seeing this in Paris, probably because we were there a little later in the fall. Looks like fun for kids, though.

Taking the Kids Sailing at the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris
Last updated on December 5th, 2018
A historic city park in the Latin Quarter
Today, I have my little ones and their friends for the afternoon. Four children from barely walking little girl to full of energy running boys. We’re spending time outdoors in one of Paris’ most popular parks.
The Luxembourg Garden (Jardin du Luxembourg), located in the Latin Quarter, is one of two city parks (or green lungs) in the area, the other being the Jardin des Plantes. The Jardin du Luxembourg is a respectable 23 hectares in the heart of Paris. Created in 1612 by Queen Marie de Médicis, the garden is sometimes known by Parisians as “Luco” or “Luxembourg”. So when a local asks to meet at the Luxembourg, he doesn’t mean the country!
Young King Louis XIII used to hunt wild boar piglets in the Luxembourg. But today, no hunting for my tribe of piglets, I’m taking them sailing. Yes, sailing in the Jardin du Luxembourg, in the 6th district of Paris.
Keeping your children busy at the Garden of Luxembourg
There’s a lot to do and see at the Luxembourg.
Plenty of history, with the beautiful Luxembourg Palace, that houses the French Senate, plenty of playgrounds for children, puppet shows, public tennis courts, pony rides, grass where you can rest, chairs where you can laze, greenhouses, a museum and art gallery, rotating open air photo expos, sculptures, refreshments and snacks, cafes, concerts etc. And of course, old trees, plants, bees, birds!
If anything the kids can always run around!
Pirate ship and flags of the world
Ahoy! Head straight for the central pond (“bassin central”) with your eager crew. You’ll have to go down a few steps, but look to the left and right of the oval for easier access for prams and wheelchairs.
The central pond of the Luxembourg Garden is where budding sailors and pirates meet to race wooden model ships. A few people bring their own toys, but most rent traditional sail boats from the mysterious man. He appears every spring and disappears as the cold weather sets in.
You can’t miss the mysterious man. L’homme des mystères, l’homme mystérieux (not sure he’s aware that the kids call him that). Sometimes he’s a young fella, sometimes he’s an old sea dog (wearing a sea jacket in the middle of summer). For a few euros, he’ll let the kids play with his collection of wooden sailboats. Each boat proudly sports a country flag: France, Brazil, Japan… And one has the dreaded black flag, complete with skull and crossbones. There’ll be a bit of scuffling as the kids will obviously all want the same flag, but in the end they’ll be happy! Don’t forget the wooden stick that comes with the boat!
Relaxing or running after kids and boats?
Now, sailing at the Luxembourg Garden consists of putting the model sailboat in the central pond, giving it a shove and watching it elegantly glide along prevailing winds. Sometimes the boats get stuck in the duck house in the middle of the basin, but don’t worry, a breeze with soon free it, hopefully before the kids start crying… The ducks occasionally get annoyed, but they’ve learned that the boats are harmless.
Run after your boat as it drifts towards the edge of the pond (usually at the far end of where it started its journey). Use the wooden stick to catch the boat or push it away. Run again!
With one child, it’s usually quite tiring even if you’re in decent shape. With four children, it’s far from a relaxing experience, as the boats could end at opposite sides of the relatively large pond!
But in the end, the children will have spent their excess energy and had a wonderful time. Hopefully the evening will be more quiet…

The most beautiful toy stores in paris.
The most beautiful toy stores in the world are found in Paris
They will beckon you to a place of childhood wonder and old world charm. You will find the traditional toy stores of Paris in locations as enchanting as the stores themselves: in secret passages and in trendy Parisian enclaves, which makes discovering them as much a pleasure as it is to enter into their magical universes. Each toy store is inspired by timeless classic European style and exists to delight young children, and the child in all of us.
Les FanFans
42 Rue François Miron, 75004 Paris. Metro Saint Paul
Les FanFans holds a special place in my heart because it was the beginning of our journey to create Little French Heart.
Le Fanfans was the first toy store I visited in Paris when my daughter was about to turn six. I was seeking birthday gifts for my darling along with special presents for my ever-growing list of nieces and nephews. It was a silly laughing cow rolling over the floor that drew us in, however, the owner, who kept surprising us with magic tricks was so charming and funny that it lead me to want to create a similar store online for the world to enjoy.
Le FanFans is indeed a toy store of tresors pour enfants (treasures for children) yet it is a typical toy store stuffed with magic tricks, metal carousels and games. It is located in Le Marais – running behind Rue des Rivoli among trendy restaurants, art galleries, and fromageries, so after some retail therapy for the little one you can treat yourself to something beautiful, too. After, stroll either to La Bastille, La Seine or up to Le Louvre. (You just need comfortable shoes).
Can’t make it to Paris right now? Shop Little French Heart for classic toys, baby gifts, home decor & divine slow fashion.
Pain D’epices
29 Passage Jouffroy, 75009 Paris. Metro: Richelieu – Drouot or Grands Boulevards
Of all the Parisian toy stores Pain D’epices (ginger bread) is the most enchanting, and so typically French. And it is just as much fun trying to find it because it resides in one of the labyrinths or passages built last century – almost haunting in their vaudeville charm.
While Pain D’epices offers many traditional and contemporary European toys, it specialises in the miniature dollhouses from the classic Georgian home to the modern mansion. But more impressive are the fitouts – everything you could imagine has been included – hundreds of tiny copper saucepans, household utensils, fruit, wine decanters, miniature cheese boards (with French cheeses of course), French pastries, rolling pins, vintage scales and all the furniture you could ever wish for.
There are also miniature boulangerie, toy shop and petrol station storefront models that children (or adults) can build.
Seeking beautiful gifts but not in Paris right now? Find quality shipping and kind honest service at Little French Heart.
68 galerie Vivienne 75002 Paris. Ph: 33 01 42 60 59 97. Metro: Bourse
The most beautiful of all toy stores in Paris, Si Tu Veux is found in a charming neo-classical 19th Century arcade in Paris’ 2nd arrondissement nestled among curious antique and high couture designer stores and a warm and beckoning bar LeGrand Filles et Fils (so that you can have a well deserved champagne after finding the arcade).
Sparkling in soft fairy lights, Si Tu Veux beckons the passer-by to enter into a world that defies time, and bursts with a collection of the most classic European toys. The owner, Madeline Deny, publishes a regular blog that suggests all manner of creative and inexpensive children’s activities to do with the imagination and play – great to practice your French, or be inspired by one of the denizens of European toy stores.
Little French Heart
If you don’t have the chance to visit one of the beautiful Parisian toy stores then visit Little French Heart , our toy and gift store as beautiful as the boutiques of Paris.
Little French Heart Toy and Gift Store exists to offer you the kind of dreamy French nursery decor, handmade dolls and toy boats, traditional wooden toys, curios, girls exquisite clothing and French vintage styled home wares that you would discover in the enchanting moments of visiting Paris or Provence.
At Little French Heart you will find exquisite French and European gifts that capture the essence of childhood in its pure and lovely magic. Each gift has been carefully selected for its delightful blend of tradition and fantasy, art and imagination, and vintage style … elements that make up the precious memories of childhood and develop foundations for children to grow into creative adults.
We also have a beautiful collection of linens and accessories for women so that you can treat yourself too.

I am looking to purchase a music box for my 5 year old grandson. Can you ship to the USA? And if so what types do you have?
I have recently purchased a pond boat reminiscent of the pond boats in Luxembourg Gardens. It is approximately 24″ long X 5″ wide X 30″ tall and carries a brass tab on the stern with “Au Paradise du infants” on Rivoli. Can you help me chase down his toy’s providence?

IOC says it was tricked by Russian prank callers amid tension ahead of Paris Olympics
The International Olympic Committee believes its president Thomas Bach fell prey to a prank telephone call amid rising tensions with Russia over restrictions on its athletes competing at the Paris Games.
The IOC on Thursday detailed a call from people claiming to be from the African Union — a similar trick to one played by Russian callers on Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni in September.
In Meloni’s call, she acknowledged “fatigue” with the war in Ukraine believing she was talking with officials of the African Union.
The IOC said it had calls with “a person pretending to be the chair of the African Union Commission” wanting to discuss a statement on the politicization of sport.
The IOC and Bach have publicly criticized the Russian state including over plans to organize an international multi-sports event in September, weeks after the Paris Olympics close.Russian athletes who pass vetting to compete in Paris also will not take part in the opening ceremony parade of boats on the River Seine, the IOC decided this week.
“There appears to have been a new incident in the Russian disinformation and defamation campaign against the International Olympic Committee and its president,” the Olympic body said in a statement.
“Fake calls purporting to be from the African Union Commission appear to have been made by the very same group that has already attacked a number of global political leaders and other high-ranking personalities in the same way,” the IOC said.
Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, known as Vovan and Lexus, also tricked the president of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in November 2022.
Duda believed he was talking to France’s President Emmanuel Macron.
Russia is on track to have about 35 athletes qualify for the Paris Olympics — about 10% of its usual team for a Summer Games.

IOC excludes Russian and Belarusian athletes from taking part in the Paris Olympics opening ceremony

GENEVA (AP) — Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be allowed to take part in the traditional parade at the opening ceremony at the Paris Olympics, the IOC said Tuesday.
The opening ceremony on July 26 will see thousands of athletes travel on boats down the River Seine for several miles (kilometers) toward the Eiffel Tower, instead of the normal parade of teams inside a stadium.
The International Olympic Committee said athletes from Russia and Belarus who are approved to compete at the Olympics as neutrals will have a chance only “to experience the event” — likely watching from near the river.
The IOC decision follows the International Paralympic Committee which two weeks ago announced a ban for its Paris opening ceremony on Aug. 28.
Russia and Belarus are barred from team sports at the Olympics because of the war in Ukraine and the IOC has laid out a two-step vetting procedure for individual athletes from those countries to be granted neutral status. Those athletes must first be approved by the governing body of their individual sport and then by an an IOC-appointed review panel.
Neutral athletes must not have publicly supported the invasion of Ukraine, or be affiliated with military or state security agencies. It is unclear if membership of a Russian military sports club, such as CSKA, will be a reason for denying neutral status.
The IOC said Tuesday it expects about 36 neutral athletes with Russian passports and 22 with Belarusian passports to qualify for the Paris Games.
A decision on whether those athletes will be allowed to take part in the Aug. 11 closing ceremony will be taken “at a later stage,” the IOC said.
Any medals won by neutral athletes will not be counted as a collective group in the overall medals table.
The IOC also revealed details of the replacement flag in jade green that will be used for neutral athletes at medal ceremonies, where a specially written anthem without lyrics will be played.
In another source of tension between Olympic leaders and Russian sport, the IOC decided Tuesday that the International Boxing Association led by Kremlin-backed Umar Kremlev will not be involved in organizing bouts for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The IOC also threatened to remove boxing from the Los Angeles program in what seemed like a challenge to national federations worldwide to distance themselves from the IBA and Kremlev.
The IOC withdrew its recognition of the IBA last year and the body was not allowed to take part in organizing boxing at the previous Tokyo Olympics or in Paris. But Kremlev has further riled the IOC with confrontational comments and support for the rival Friendship Games scheduled in Russia in September.
“If we do not have a new boxing body to work in partnership with the IOC, we will not be in a position to have boxing at the program of (Los Angeles),” the Olympic body said.
LEAVING RUSSIA
Two Russians athletes who have changed national-team eligibility to different countries got those moves approved by the IOC.
Swimmer Anastasiia Kirpichnikova, a two-time European silver medalist in distance freestyle events, is eligible to represent France at the Olympics, and Greco-Roman wrestler Aleksandr Komarov can compete for Serbia. He won the European championship this year.
GUATEMALA RESTORED
The IOC eased a suspension imposed 18 months ago on the national Olympic body of Guatemala because of alleged government interference.
The IOC cited “the interest of the athletes” as a reason for provisionally lifting the ban, which should clear the way for Guatemalan athletes to compete in Paris with their flag, anthem and team name.
The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, came to Switzerland for talks with the IOC last month.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas
- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
- These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool
Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.
She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.
For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.
Victorious: 85 meters
Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom
Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.
For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.
She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.
Casino Royale: 72 meters
Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi
Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).
Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.
Related stories
However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.
Talisman C: 70.6 meters
Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.
Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.
Joy: 70 meters
Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor
Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.
There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.
Triumph: 65.4 meters

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported
B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.
Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.
Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.
Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.
Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.
The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.
Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."
More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.
Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.
The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."
The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.
On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.
The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.
There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
