This new model is the first catamaran designed from scratch since Privilège Marine joined Hanse Yachts. The 510 Signature, launched a year ago, takes many elements from the former Series 5. This is a strong indicator of what the powerful German group wants: to respect the DNA of the Privilege brand founded by Philippe Jeantot back in 1985, while offering a contemporary vision of luxury sailing. We went along to Les Sables d’Olonne, the birthplace of the brand, to verify that the 580 Signature is indeed... a Privilège!

Gilles Wagner, CEO of the shipyard, came to welcome me in person; it was immediately clear that this launch was important and that strong choices had been very consciously made. Indeed, after 35 years during which the highlight of going aboard a new Privilège was always seeing the famous owner’s cabin housed in the central rostrum, the 580 Signature dares to free itself from this feature. Better than a revolution, it’s a totally different approach that was adopted from the start of the project. As with superyachts, the exterior design was a major factor in the initial choices. Already in charge of the interior design of the Privilège for several years, the Darnet Design agency was naturally entrusted with the exterior style of this new model. Founded in 1985, by world champion yacht racher Philippe Jeantot, Privilege Marine became a leading luxury catamaran builder. It was acquired by HanseYachts AG, maker of Hanse, Dehler and Moddy brands and the second largest builder of sailboats in the world. Privilege catamarans are luxury catamarans made for long distance cruising both coastal and offshore sailing. Privilege is known for strong, overbuilt catamarans that provide a great platform for extended cruising. Currently, Privilege offers 5 models that range in length from 51 feet to 75 feet. The Privilege 585 offers a standard of living afloat, which rivals many an opulent apartment ashore. With an expansive bridge deck and roomy cabins, the Privilege 585 makes an ideal charter yacht, with some currently in charter around the world. Though not only suited to that purpose, this catamaran is equally at home as a bluewater, liveaboard cruiser. Privilege Series 5

Description

The Privilege Series 5, which has been rebranded the 510, is a luxury long distance cruiser that has made a name for itself thanks to its quality build and finish. These boats are a real step up from other cruising catamarans which is why we have included them in our Luxury Catamarans sections. There is an associated jump in price of course.

This boat has been well thought out with wide, easy-to-navigate side decks and plenty of hand holds. and you can tell very quickly that she was designed for long passages. The helm, engine controls, instruments and electric sheet winches are all around the raised helm station that should make her easy to sail with a short-handed crew. Visibility is good all around from the elevated helm position on the port side.

The hulls, deck, cabin top and bimini are foam-cored and resin-infused, and to reduce weight, furniture and bulkheads are made with foam-cored maple laminates. The quality of the joinery finish is a real step up from less expensive boats, as you would expect.

The Privilège Series 5 has rounded hulls, with chines above the waterline for decent living space down below and buoyancy at sea. She feels like a very solid boat under power or motor and is very quiet below. On a reach, you should comfortable hit 9 or 10 knots in a decent breeze.

There’s a full main and genoa, and an inner stay-sail, also with a furler, plus options on light wind and down wind sails off the bowsprit. The new angular lines of the updated Marc Lombard design look like they will cut through a sea- she’s an impressive looking catamaran.

Cruising speed under power is around 8 knots

It’s probably the interiors that Privilege are so well known for and it was Franck Darnet who had his hand in designing this one. These are semi-custom boats so owners have a great deal of input into the configuration of individual boats. The signature feature is the huge master stateroom in the nacelle forward- it’s probably the biggest owners cabin in its class and many lead onto a big ensuite bathroom in the starboard hull (I can’t quite call it a head).

Privilege was started in the 80s by Philippe Jeantot, and launched as a safe family cruising and offshore catamaran. The Privilège Serie 5 ticks all of these boxes. If you are looking for a solid, safe long distance cruiser with the space and ability to soak up all of the toys, then the Privilege Series 5 is your boat.

PRIVILEGE 585 "ERIBEA" (2005 - refit 2016)

The PRIVILEGE 585 remains one of the best values on the market when it concerns  family cruising safely and with optimal comfort. With her protected helmstation located against the cockpit bulkhead, she remains easy to manage in reduced crew, and safe in bad weather.  

ERIBEA is very special: she is the only PRIVILEGE 585 which has received some transoms extensions (an incredible result !), and she still belongs to her original owners who love her ... This is hull Nr 18 (only 24 built), her cockpit is completely teak latted and protected by a GRP hardtop (few units benefit from it today), an hydraulic gangway facilitates boarding, electric davits and an arch supporting antennas are major options.

Her sole owner has always maintained ERIBEA with great rigour and care, with a crew employed year-round, and she has never suffered any damage. Intended for warm countries, she has also been subject to a specific thermal insulation during  her construction. 

Air conditioning, watermaker, 2 generators, satellite, complete electronics, in short a very accomplished equipment. In refined cherry finish, this is a magnificent Owner's version with the galley down in starboard gangway, the quarters crew forward, an elegant salon with the living space, the bar area and the chart table just at the main entrance. 

In 2018, owners have also invested heavily in a complete refit ; Today a new project invites them to sell her, not without nostalgia ...
