Seiko Velatura Yachting Timer
Launched in 2007, Seiko’s Velatura collection is designed to withstand the rigors of open ocean racing. For 2009, Seiko improves the the Velatura Yachting Timer, making it lighter, tougher, and more resistant to the elements. The case is made from titanium, covered with a new hard coating. The watch has a new screw-in crown system that ensures water resistance to 20 bar or 200 meters. A new strap combines leather and ballistic nylon to offer a blend of good looks and strength. The dial is also new, with the pre-set start times highlighted in bright yellow and blue for easier legibility.
There’s also a new model for women – the Velatura women’s chronograph. It is available in stainless steel with regular or mother-of-pearl dials, both of which are set with 16 diamonds. This piece is also available with a choice of leather strap or stainless steel bracelet.
The men’s Yachting Timer retails for about 950 Euro, and the women’s chronograph ranges from Euro 590-640. You may click the images to view larger versions.

Seiko Velatura Yachting Timer Chronograph Watch SPC007P1 is the newest release from Seiko Velatura. It is a terrific watch. The face of this watch is really appealing. The watch looks well with brown dial with white markers. Time of this watch is indicated by the hour, minute and small second hands. Yacht timer of this watch combines the functions of count down timer and a stop watch that starts operating automatically when the timer finishes counting down. This function is particularly useful in yacht racing. 5-, 6- & 10-minute preset timers are available. The timer can be set to a maximum of 15 minutes in 1-minute increments. The stopwatch can measure 12 hours in 1/5-second increments. When the measurement reaches 12 hours, the stopwatch automatically stops.
This Seiko Chronograph watch has Hand winding and automatic capabilities. It has Urethane strap, Direct Drive Indicator & Sapphire Crystal with anti-reflective coating. Approximate case diameter of this watch including crown is 51mm, approximate case thickness is 12mm and Designed in consultation with top sailors from around the globe, it has a pre-race timer that sounds at 10, 6 or 5 minutes before the race start. After the race start, the chronograph takes over automatically and records the elapsed race time. The case of this watch is stainless steel. There is a date calendar display & Direct Drive Indicator. The water resistant of this watch is 100m.
The Seiko Yachting Timer is the instrument the racing sailor needs to hit the mark at the exact second of the start. These intervals are clearly shown on the brightly colored dial and the center hand that counts down the minutes and seconds is large, bright red and legible. With these race-specific functions and with a separate chronograph and alarm, the Velatura Yachting Timer is set to become the watch of choice for the discerning racer.

The Seiko 7A28 - like this full serviced and legitimately rare 1983 Seiko 7A28-7090 regatta chronograph here, with original 7A28 instructions manual and inner/outer Seiko Quartz boxes - entered the market during the height of the LCD technology of the 1980s.
In 1983, Seiko unveiled to the world the first ever quartz analog chronograph, the 7A28 - a 15 jewel, fully adjustable quartz movement with zero plastic parts in the gear train and a movement that can be serviced and adjusted just like a mechanical watch due to its innovative construction.
With it, Seiko and its 7A28 entered history as the world’s first analog quartz movement - the 7A28 would grow to eventually come in over forty variations, including models issued to the military and those used in movies (including starring roles in James Bond flicks and the film " Aliens ," among others); some were even issued to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence naval and air forces, and also to the South African Air Force.
The variant here, the 7A28-7090 regatta, debuted in circa 1982/83, with a highly unique bead-blasted case designed by Seiko solely for this reference, and it was only built for a few years before disappearing from Seiko catalogs post-1985.
As noted in Fratello , “The Seiko 7A28-7090 Yacht Timer is one of the brand’s most desirable vintage watches - when you ask Seiko people about the top vintage pieces they’d like to own, a host of divers, chronographs, and Grand Seiko will certainly make their way to the list, but the Yacht Timer almost always finds its way in there."
"There’s a reason for this and it’s not its innovative movement; the watch is undeniably attractive…the Yacht Timer to be wonderfully unbalanced and very instrument-like. The fact that these big pushers [the start/stop button on the upper right and the split timing pusher on the upper left would be the two most used functions on the watch] are added to a very slim case exaggerates the view further…if it weren’t for that wonderful burst of color that defines the 9:00 minutes sub register, you could characterize the watch as plain.
"But that wheel made of alternating light and royal blue “pies” when combined with a yellow hand adds just enough color to make this piece a real looker... the Yacht Timer’s are rare, rare, rare. In fact, I’d bet that less than a handful of them come up for sale each year – and I’m relatively confident in saying this as I track them semi-seriously.”
This Seiko 7A28 regatta comes with original instructions manual, inner/outer Seiko boxes, canvas-backed leather strap, nylon strap, rugged travel case, and springbar tool.
1983 Seiko 7A28-7090 Yacht Timer Chronograph, Box & Papers
DIAL: Vibrantly colorful and rare regatta dial, with matching hands - all writing is crisply legible, and the blue and yellow colors feature zero fade; lume shines.
CASE: Stainless-steel bead-blasted matte case measures 40mm (w/o crown) x 45.5mm, with matching caseback. This case was only used on this 7A28 variant, and does not share it with any of the other over 40 variants.
CRYSTAL: Hardlex crystal, no cracks or scratches.
BAND: This 7A28 comes with a light brown leather-backed canvas strap; it also comes with a green, white, and dark blue nylon strap.
MOVEMENT: Seiko 7A28 quartz movement, manufactured in May 1983. We have performed a full service on this Seiko Regatta chronograph
CROWN: Unsigned stainless-steel crown.
CHRONOGRAPH PUSHERS: Chronograph pushers depress with satisfying click – no sticking. All chronograph hands reset as designed to zero.

Sure, we’re mostly about mechanical watches here at Analog:Shift. But certain quartz-powered timepieces are simply too cool to ignore — especially when you come across colorful examples produced by Japanese powerhouse, Seiko, during the 1990s.
This 1990s Seiko Yacht Timer features the brand’s nifty Calibre 8M37 quartz movement — one of their first quartz movements equipped with a countdown system. At a glance this Seiko presents as an analog timepiece, but in hand it feels much more like a digital watch without the distraction of an LED display. Let us explain.
A Seiko Reference 8M-037-6000, this piece features a 35mm stainless steel case with a steel friction compass bezel, a crown at 9 o’clock and barrel pushers flanked along the right side. Although simple at a glance, the dial offers a range of function options including a function indicator located at 12 o’clock, a tri-color timing scale bordering the dial’s bottom half and a skeletonized handset.
The ‘digital’ qualities reside within its suite of timing functions and the smooth sweep of the handset while moving through each setting. This Yacht Timer comes with three separate pre-set timers that can be started from 5, 10 or 15 minutes. The free-set timer can be set to 1-minute intervals up to 30 minutes and lastly, its repeat function allows for the timer to count down again when the set time is up.
Oh by the way, this Seiko can also tell the time.

Thanks Kat! I appreciate that. I think it's gonna take a little hunting around to find something that works. I've only just moved to the area (west LA) so I need to find a little, local watch expert to go and talk to!

Thanks Kat. Yeah...I'm beginning to see that now. Gone are the days of little, independent High Street watch repair shops! Do you mind if I pick your brain a bit..? Does this mean I have to look for a watch strap that's 16mm in width..? None that I've seen so far seem to have any mention of the measurement they expand out to, be it 23mm, or less, or more. I'm assuming that a 16mm strap won't expand any further than 23mm, so it's an industry standard, so to speak..? Do you have any favorite places or sites to go to for something super-specific..? Thanks Kate, much appreciated.

Not sure about Skylab – it's certainly possible. The most famous NASA-related watch is the Omega Speedmaster Professional — but — the A827-6010 was a very popular watch worn by the astronauts during training in the 80s. Roy Scheider can be seen wearing one in the epic movie "2010: The Year We Make Contact" and the character of astronaut Molly Cobb (played by Sonya Walger) in the truly brilliant alt-history TV show "For All Mankind" can also be seen wearing one.
I'm thinking of the wrong version; it was the A829-6019 hat astronauts wore in the Space Shuttle

In timer-mode the movement runs actualy counterclockwise! The countdown timer can be set by one-minute intervals between 1and 30 minutes, or you can choose between one of the preset timers for 5, 10 or 15 minutes. This should work. Just get a black Seiko buckle off eBay and switch it out. This says it's 17/23. If lug is 16mn, you may need to notch it out with an Exacto knife, as Rob suggested. Looks cool, and probably the one I referenced in my post above. This is on Amazon for $12.00. Listed as.

According to Boley.de, the Seiko part numbers for the 7A28-7090 hands are as follows: Hour - 12BJ6KKH. Minute - 12BH0KQM. Sweep - 13SC06LJ. The hands on a stainless 7A38-7190 may look similar, but they're different part numbers. Any 7Axx (7a28 / 7A38 / 7A48) hands will fit your 7A28-7090. higgins1978 Discussion starter.
