Many people on a sailing holiday visit Fethiye for its ancient ruins - the ancient city of Telmessos under the foundations of Fethiye has rock tombs and a theatre dating back to at least the 4th Century BC. How To Get To Fethiye

Dalaman Airport

Marmaris Dalaman Airport is around 30km from Fethiye. You can take a bus from the airport to the town. Taxis cost a little more but if you in a large group they could be competitive with a bus journey and have the added advantage of taking you direct to the marina.

7 days - Island hopping Fethiye Bay: Taking in the historic towns of Fethiye and Gocek, this is an opportunity to see the best that the Gulf of Fethiye has to offer. The Gulf has a number of islands (that belong to Turkey unlike many islands close-by) such as Tersane ('Dockyard Island'), Baba Island (famed for its wild rabbits), and the archaeologically important Kekova Island. Gemiler Island has ancient Christian ruins and is known for its links to St Nicholas. On this trip you will get the opportunity to forget the world outside while enjoying the beauty of the bay in its entirety.

14 days - the best of the Turquoise Coast: This trip starts with an easterly trip out towards Kekova Roads and its quiet anchorages. You will spend an afternoon in Butterfly Bay, named for its beautiful insect residents. Heading west, pausing at anchorages and villages on the way you will get to the buzzing holiday resort of Marmaris. Do stop at Wall Bay and Ruins Bay where you will get to see ancient ruins from early Christian and Roman times. Tomb Bay is another place of important archaelogical interest (the remains of the Carian city of Cyra is here). A final stop on the way back to Fethiye will be Gocek with its four marinas and great sailor's buzz!

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Fethiye

The sailing season runs from April to October in Fethiye. July and August are the busiest months for a Fethiye yacht charter. This is also when the NE wind the Meltemi peaks in strength. Though this makes for a cooling blast from the fierce heat of summer.

With the Meltemi less powerful outside of the peak season - and the marinas and sailing waters less crowded - it may pay off to do a sailing holiday either later in the year or earlier - if you can get out in May or October you may find things calmer both in terms of crowds.

Sailing Weather In Fethiye

The Meltemi winds dominate the weather of the Aegean Sea in Turkey. The further west you go - as far as Bodrum the stronger the NW winds are during the day. The further east you go - around Antalya in the east of the country, the gentler these winds are during the day. These vary day to day and through the day. The most comfortable time to sail in Turkey is during the morning every day during the holiday season. The winds tend to be lighter and steadier in the morning and can build to very exciting conditions come mid-afternoon.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Ece Saray Marina is the main marina in Fethiye. With around 460 berths it is mid-sized, although rather basic in its amenities.

July and August are the hottest and busiest times of year - and the NE Meltemi wind is often at its fiercest too. A Northern European will still find it very hot in September but the crowds are smaller and it will be easier to find a berth at the marinas.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary in fethiye bay.

DAY 1 :  Embark at Ece Marina in  Fethiye . This lively town has shops and restaurants, handy for your first night. DAY 2 :   Boynuz Bükü  (15nm), a well protected bay where you can walk to the nearby waterfall and in the evening have dinner in the lovely restaurant garden. DAY 3 :   Karacaören  (20nm) is a pleasant anchorage protected by cliffs and the reef to the south. Go ashore by dinghy for dinner where many of the dishes are prepared in a wood burning oven. DAY 4 :   Kapi Creek  (15nm ) is a lovely, well sheltered bay, but first you can visit the ruins on Gemiler Island or have a look at the famous beach of Olü Deniz. Dinner ashore in the simple but good restaurant. DAY 5 :   Göcek  (10nm) is a lively little town with several marinas. Go to the municipality marina but on the way stop in a pleasant bay for lunch and swimming. DAY 6 :  Twenty Two Fathom Cove  (5 nm) is a short distance but sail south around Peksimet Island where you can often see dolphins. DAY 7 :  Return to  Fethiye  (12nm).

DAY 1 :  Embark at Ece Marina in  Fethiye . This lively town has shops and restaurants, handy for your first night. DAY 2 :  A pleasant sailing trip to one of the many lovely bays in the Fethiye Bay area which can only be reached by boat such as  Tomb Bay  (15nnm). On entering the bay you can see the Lycian rock tombs. Enjoy the hospitality and food in the restaurant and after dinner have a chat and a drink around the camp fire. DAY 3 :  Sail west out of the Gulf of Fethiye and enjoy a longer day's sail to the attractive new marina at  Ekincik  (29 nm). DAY 4 :  Day trip to the ruins of  Ancient Kaunos . Take a boat trip up the Dalyan Delta, home to turtles and blue crabs. Visit the little town of Dalyan on your way to the ruins of Caunos, the rock tombs and mud baths. A lovely trip that takes all day. DAY 5 :   Cold Water Bay  (30 nm). Go for dinner in the restaurant on top of the hill with a spectacular view of the bay. DAY 6 :   Sarsala  (17 nm) is one of our favourite bays in the Fethiye Bay, a down wind trip to a beautiful bay with a good jetty with moorings. DAY 7 :  Return to  Fethiye  (13nm).

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A charter boat captain reeled in a six-foot bull shark in The Rigolets on Friday, July 5.

Captain Mackie Bellott says it’s the biggest shark he’s ever seen or caught in Lake Pontchartrain.

“When we saw the fin break the surface, it was exciting,” Bellott said. “It was game on.”

Bellott says he targets sharks and other fish in Slidell and Mandeville.

“I was like ‘this has to be over five feet long. It’s a big bull shark,” Bellott explained. “As it got closer and closer, I realized it was even bigger than that.”

Bellott believes the shark was pregnant.

“After about an hour and fifteen minutes, we finally got it alongside the boat. It took three of us to actually lift it in the boat,” he recalled. “We lifted her in the boat, got her on the deck and we were just high-fiving. It was awesome. We rolled the tape out and measure it and it came up 75 inches.”

“We ended up deciding to let it go. It looked like a pregnant female. We all agreed to let it go,” Bellott said. “It was just super cool to see and just a wicked experience. But yeah, seeing a shark that big up close in a boat. It was really, really scary.”
