Offering the lowest-priced 4-hour yacht rental we found in Singapore is the prestigious ONE°15 Life, which operates out of Sentosa Cove, widely acknowledged for having the most floral-print shirts per capita. 

For sure, there are plenty of large, sleek and powerful yachts of all types on offer, but our hearts were captured by Popeye , a cute little 36 ft sedan classic. 

We imagine taking this little yacht out for a cruise around Singapore can only be the most hipster thing imaginable, so be sure to pack your hand-cranked coffee grinder and straw hat. Also, from just $110 per pax, at that. 

Oh yes, you could also opt for a 2-hour sunset cruise on board one of the other soulless hunks of floating metal, but who needs that when you’ve got Popeye?

NoName Booking: From $560

We get it. The somewhat dodgy-sounding company name doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. NoName actually refers to the names of the three vessels in its fleet — imaginatively christened No Name 1, No Name 2 and No Name 3 (what, you pay low prices and still expect a yacht with an actual name?).

But not to worry. Judging from the photos on the website, you will be getting good-sized power catamarans and single-hull yachts, measuring some 40ft in length. So, it won’t be some tiny boat with complimentary use of rowing oars.

We may have stumbled upon a micro-site for these three particular vessels, which are probably part of a much larger fleet operated by a proper company. For all we know, these quirky-named vessels could be particularly famous amongst the marine community. Starting from just $112 per person, NoName offers one of the cheapest 4-hour yacht charters out there. 

White Sails: From $599

Offering luxury on the high seas, White Sails invites you on board Sunrise, a lagoon sailing catamaran that wouldn’t look out of place on the Instagram feed of a lifestyle influencer. Just one look at the trampoline net with 360-degree views, and you’ll be mentally choosing filters. 

Fully air-conditioned below deck, with three bedrooms and ample seating space — all done up in wood panelling for that Florida millionaire flair — the vessel is actually rated for up to 18 pax. Imagine all that space when you and your party of eight get on board in style. 

There are also luxury dining options you can add on, including a full-spread, on-board BBQ featuring seafood, meats and poultry. From just $120 per pax, this one’s an absolute steal. 

The Yacht Club: From $600

Among the largest fleet of yachts in Singapore (including one of Asia’s top 50 Super Yachts), The Yacht Club will have something for every appetite and budget. Even the bargain option starting at $600 (or $120 per pax) will get you the elegant Golden Ocean, a powered single-hull that can accommodate up to 18 pax in its fully climate-controlled saloon deck and spacious lounge area — all yours to enjoy for the better part of a day.

There’s also a 2D1N package starting from $3,424 ($685 per pax) that will let you spend the night on board in style and comfort. For a memorable dinner, check out the Sunset Dinner Cruise, which takes place on board the spectacular Royal Albatross superyacht. For just $208 per adult, you get to enjoy a 3-course meal, sunset at sea, and a welcome mocktail. 

YachtCharter.sg: From $600

YachtCharter.sg offers a selection of 18 curated vessels for charter — including our No Name trio mentioned above. This makes it an excellent starting point if you’re looking to get a grasp on the typical charter costs for vessels of different sizes and specifications.

There are even deals for sharing charters, which put you on board larger, more impressive vessels, but you’d have to observe social distancing and may have to wait your turn to enjoy certain facilities or areas. 

Yachtly: From $650 

Boasting a fleet of over 30 vessels, Yatchly’s offering is one of the most extensive on the list. From powered single-hulls to twin-hulled sailing catamarans and ocean cruisers, the variety is as refreshing as sea breeze. 

The actual yachts available depends on the day of your booking, but you’ll find some familiar names as you browse the listings (hello, No Name trio!).

As with YachtCharter, this is a great website for checking up what’s on offer. But it might be good to double-check with a simple Google search in case there are promotions or additional savings out there. 

M-Barq: From $1,000

The final entry on our list, M-Barq, seems to deal more in larger, upper-end catamarans and single-hull yachts, with charter prices starting from around $200 per pax. The fleet is mostly made up of vessels rated to carry between 30 to 50 passengers, but you’ll also find some smaller yachts in the 20+ pax range.

Needless to say, the bookings here are designed for ultimate exclusivity and indulgence — imagine booking an entire double-deck powered catamaran with a capacity of 30, just for you and four of your closest friends. 

Yachting in the time of COVID-19: What does it mean?

The pandemic has touched almost every aspect of our lives as we know it, but luckily, the impact on leisure yachting seems to be minor. Aside from enhanced safety, cleansing and hygiene protocols, the only major change seems to be group size. Like with most activities on the mainland, there is a limit to the group size. It’s best to check before booking. 

Groups must be separate and distinct, which means not sharing a residential address, or not been in close contact. However, exceptions may be made for wedding solemnisations and receptions.  

Another possible impact could be the lowering of charter prices, since groups of five to eight individuals don’t usually have the spending power of, say, a corporate retreat of 15. Which means if you’ve always wanted to book that luxury cruiser, you could be getting the best bargains right now.

What to expect on a Singapore yacht cruise

The typical yacht cruise lasts around four hours, combining pleasure cruises with views of Singapore’s coastal attractions, and a stopover at outlying islands such as Lazarus or Kusu Island where the captain will drop anchor for an ocean swim or snorkelling, before sailing back to the mainland. 

Typically, the price of your charter includes light refreshments (hot or cold drinks, fruit and snacks), swimming equipment (floaties, snorkels, kayaks and paddles) and the services of on-board staff who will help you with your requests. There are also add-ons and bundles that allow you to extend your booking time, or upgrade to full meals and alcoholic drinks, and even enjoy a BBQ on board. 

What if you want something different? Well, yacht cruises are highly customisable, so if you’re looking for, say, a sunset cruise, want to sail to a specific location or explore a local island on foot, be sure to make your requests known during your booking. 

Do bear in mind that you probably won’t be able to disembark at a foreign port of call, owing to pandemic restrictions. 

How to find yacht rentals in Singapore for cheaper?

Avoid peak periods.

Charter prices for yacht rentals in Singapore are pretty dependent on supply and demand. That means surcharges for bookings on peak periods. To keep your charter budget in check, try to avoid weekends, public holidays and peak holiday seasons such as year end.

Keep things vanilla

While typical bookings are for a minimum of four hours, most charter providers allow you to add hours to extend your booking for a fee. The same goes for add-ons, extra stopovers and special requests. While providers are generally accommodating, you should be prepared to pay for anything extra not in the original package or itinerary.

Additional hours and add-ons can quickly balloon the price you're paying, so sticking to the plain vanilla option should serve you well.

Shell out for the package

Maybe you prefer to be served a full meal on board, instead of just snacks. Or, perhaps your daughter’s dream to visit every one of Singapore’s outlying islands means adding another three hours to your itinerary.

However, rates vary depending on the number of pax. What is included in the yacht charter fee? Besides the opportunity to be onboard a luxurious private yacht, you will also get to enjoy perks like: 1 Captain + 1 Crew, 4/5 hours charter (duration depends on your preference), relaxing cruising to Southern islands, 2 kayaks, 1 stand up paddle board, 1 water mat.

Important information before you charter

• All prices quoted below are inclusive of the prevailing tax.
• Only fully vaccinated passengers are allowed onboard the SZH-licensed pleasure craft. Unvaccinated passengers (other than recovered individuals, medically ineligible individuals, or children aged 12 years and below) are not allowed to board the craft.
• All rates listed are for basic charters only (4-5 hours depending on the yacht). For the standard itinerary,  please click here .
• Optional add-ons such as city skyline cruises may still be chargeable, depending on the yacht.
• Optional add-ons such as BBQ pit and cooking services  DO NOT  include food.
• Ice (otherwise stated), disposable cutlery, and cups are not provided.

• Do note for wet weather, the Captain will still sail out if it does not pose any safety issues. If it is not possible to sail out, the Captain will try to  delay  the sail out timing. If it is not possible to sail, the charter will be  rescheduled  to a later date (subject to availability).  No cancellations  are allowed. The Captain will decide what is the next course of action.  Customers are still required to proceed to the marina and wait for the captain’s final decision.
• Disembarkation at Lazarus Island Pontoon is no longer permitted by MPA unless the yacht has a tender boat.
• Balloons are prohibited due to marine life preservation.
• Red wine is strictly prohibited on all yachts except for Anka and EagleWings 1 and 2.
• Covid-19 cancellation/ rescheduling terms and conditions If no social gatherings are allowed, we would reschedule the charter up to a mutually agreeable date and time. No cancellations will be permitted. Strictly  NO  refunds and postponements, should there be any reduction in headcount for social gatherings by the MMTF, charterers will need to reduce their own headcount and consume the charter. Notwithstanding the above, there are no refunds or reschedules for bookings even if guests are tested positive for COVID-19, unless agreed by the yacht owners.

Here's who could be responsible for paying for the Baltimore bridge disaster

• The maritime insurance industry will likely be saddled with the highest costs. 

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on Tuesday after a large container ship ran into it, leading to six presumed deaths and millions of dollars in possible damage.

It's still too early to estimate the total economic impact of the disaster, but between the cost of rebuilding the decades-old bridge, compensating the victims' families , and paying out damages for disruptions to the supply chain, the eventual cost of the disaster is expected to be significant.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the federal government should be responsible for paying to reconstruct the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect Congress to support my effort," Biden said.

The bridge was built in the 1970s for about $60 million, but the cost of rebuilding it could be 10 times its original price tag, an engineering expert told Sky News. 

Baltimore is among the busiest ports in the nation , with more than a million shipping containers passing through each year. The collapse — which closed the port to all maritime and most road traffic until further notice — is already beginning to wreak havoc on the supply chain.

The cost of building the bridge back fast enough to offset diversions as much as possible could saddle the government with a more than $600 million bill, David MacKenzie, the chair of the engineering and architecture consultancy COWIfonden, told Sky News.

Who will pay for damages to the ship and its cargo?

The container ship, the Dali , is owned by a Singapore-based firm. The ship's charterer, Maersk, confirmed to Business Insider that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship. 

However, the companies with cargo aboard the Dali could ultimately be responsible for some of the ship's damages and cargo costs, according to Ryan Petersen , the CEO of the supply-chain-logistics company Flexport, which had two containers on the ship.

The Dali was carrying 330 containers that must now be rerouted, Petersen said in an X thread.

An ancient maritime law known as " general average " dictates that companies with even a single container aboard a ship split certain damages pro rata based on the number of containers they had on board, ensuring all the stakeholders benefiting from the voyage are splitting the risk, Petersen said.

General average situations can occur when a ship is stranded or when cargo is damaged or thrown overboard to save the vessel, according to Flexport . The concept helps ensure that all parties who have a vested interest in the vessel share the cost and concern of protecting it.

It's too soon to know whether damages incurred to free the Dali in the coming days will qualify as a case of general average.

Who will pay for everything else?

The majority of the financial fallout is likely to lay primarily with the insurance industry, according to media reports.

Industry experts told the Financial Times that insurers could pay out losses for bridge damage, port disruption, and any loss of life.

The collapse could drive "one of the largest claims ever to hit the marine (re)insurance market," John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told Insurance Business.

He told the outlet that the loss of revenue from tolls while the bridge is being rebuilt will be expensive, as will any liability claims from deaths or injuries.

The Dali is covered by the Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association Ltd., known as Britannia P&I Club, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In a statement to Business Insider, Britannia said it was "working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Britannia is one of 12 mutual insurers included in the International Group of P&I Clubs, which maintains more than $3 billion of reinsurance cover, sources familiar with the matter told Insurance Business.

Britannia itself is liable for the first $10 million in damages, both FT and Insurance Business reported. Whatever remains is dealt with by the wider mutual insurance group and Lloyd's of London, a reinsurance market in the UK, the FT reported.

Massive crane arrives to clean up Baltimore bridge collapse

A floating crane that officials said was one of the largest on the East Coast arrived at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore on Friday, part of a large flotilla being assembled to clear debris that has crippled one of the nation’s largest ports and spread economic pain.

The Chesapeake 1000, which can lift 1,000 tons, will play a featured role in the cleanup from the disaster , but Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said Friday it will be joined by 10 other cranes, 10 tugs, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five Coast Guard boats that will arrive over the next several days.

But even as officials raced to restore access to the Port of Baltimore, which generates thousands of jobs and handles tens of billions of dollars worth of cargo each year, the Chesapeake 1000 sat idle Friday, underscoring the complexity, length and danger of the operation.

Officials said they couldn’t move forward with clearing debris until they had finished a careful assessment of the scene, where massive trusses sit twisted in 50-foot water and a large section of the Key Bridge is draped precariously across the bow of the cargo ship that struck it Tuesday.

The assessment included divers below the surface of the Patapsco River, survey boats and an FBI helicopter, which buzzed over the 985-foot Dali container vessel collecting images that would be used to figure out how to carefully and safely remove the steel and concrete.

Moore once again declined to offer a timeline to recover from the disaster, as he and other officials have repeatedly done in the days after the disaster.

“It is not going to be days or weeks or months,” he said. “This is going to take time.”

He and other state and federal officials spoke at a windswept news conference near the towering Chesapeake 1000 at Tradepoint Atlantic, a deepwater port that is the only shipping site still accessible by water in the Port of Baltimore. Officials said they hope to tap it more extensively while the rest of the port remains inaccessible.

During the update, an official from the Environmental Protection Agency addressed one of the most pressing concerns about the Dali: its 764 tons of hazardous materials that remain onboard. Earlier in the week, an official from the National Transportation Safety Board said some of the 56 cargo containers containing corrosives, flammable liquids and lithium ion batteries had broken open, and she had noticed a sheen on the Patapsco.

Adam Ortiz, the EPA’s Mid-Atlantic regional administrator, said testing of the water did not show major issues.

“At this time, there is no indication of active releases from the vessel nor is there presence of materials that are hazardous to human health in the water,” Ortiz said.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said at the news conference the recovery will move forward in three phases — clearing the channel so the port can resume some shipping, freeing the Dali and moving it, and finally clearing the remaining debris from the river and its bed.

Gilreath said that includes breaking “the bridge up into right-size pieces that we can lift.” Moore said the section of the Key Bridge resting on the Dali weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons , illustrating the challenge that lies ahead.

Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. of the Maryland State Police said divers are on standby to recover the bodies of bridge workers who were lost in the Patapsco River once conditions permit and the cleanup reaches the right point. Two of the six workers have been recovered. Officials said Wednesday night they had discovered what appeared to be a large vehicle stuck in the wreckage of the bridge at the bottom of the Patapsco.

Meanwhile, President Biden told reporters Friday that he plans to visit Baltimore next week with Moore.

Andrew Middleton, the director of a Christian ministry in Dundalk, Md., said he had been in touch with crew members aboard the Dali on Friday morning. The 21-member crew, most of whom are Indian, will remain on the ship.

Middleton said Friday that the crew requested WiFi and new SIM cards to communicate with family back home. The ministry director said he knows the crew has a TV on board but was trying to figure out whether they had access to live local programming.

Middleton said he is coordinating with other ministries and local companies to get WiFi, SIM cards and antennae to the crew members. He expected the first delivery to go out Saturday.

After federal officials allocated $60 million in emergency funding for bridge recovery Thursday, former Maryland governor and current Republican U.S. Senate candidate Larry Hogan said in an interview with Fox News that he would “push” his party to fully fund the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“I’m going to push them as hard as I can,” he said. “I already called a couple of Republican Senate leaders. I started working them.”
