Pros. The quiet room overlooking the garden. Large plastic trash bag. Good wifi. Close to Bay and Ocean.

Cons. One of our neighbors talked loudly on her phone about 3 am, with her voice carrying into the garden. We closed our patio door and it was okay.

Pros. Location is a 10! Great for a young family. Beach without waves on the bay just out your door and the glorious Pacific Ocean just across the street literally a 2 minute walk. Our family had a wonderful time there. My daughter won't stop talking like a parrot after being fascinated with the birds. Great restaurant also.

Cons. Just needs an updating on the rooms, hall's bathrooms.

Pros. The staff is exceptional; kind, friendly, engaging and exceed our expectations every time! The grounds are kept pristine with the peacefulness you seek while getting away from the hustle and bustle. The ducks, parrots and koi fish make you feel like you're on a tropical island. The food, variety of things to do and the river boat are all unique touches that make us look forward to our next visit before we've even left! Not to mention best pool, Jacuzzi and spa we've ever found! If you haven't been there before, you simply MUST experience The Catamaran! Plus, centrally located to many San Diego hot spots!

Pros. The catamaran is a beautiful tropical property on Mission Bay. There is lush tropical vegetation and a distinct feeling of Hawaii. The restaurant and Bar are close to the water and provide a beautiful and relaxing setting for business or pleasure. The rooms themselves are vintage, meaning that they could use updating.

Cons. Rooms needed updating. No noise insulation from outside, although the other guests were respectful and quiet on a Monday night.

Pros. They have the best beds and pillows! We liked the separate bedroom and living areas with refridge and coffee maker, which was easy to use and enabled me to make my morning oatmeal. Was nice to have a view of the Bay.

Pros. Great location. Friendly Staff, Nice rooms.

Cons. Paid Parking. Most spa functions are at additional costs.

Pros. We had a great time. Daughters wedding was fabulous, every detail was handled beautifully. We had many out of town guest that were as pleased as we were!

Pros. Great value for the money! Lots of local activities to do on the property, and wonderful accommodations throughout. It's a great place to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding for your first time! Rooms are spacious if you get the suite, and we really loved the grounds! It's a tropical paradise! Well maintained! The restaurants are pretty good, we would recommend the Sunday brunch at Oceana! Also, take advantage of the Bahia Belle cruise in the evening hours.

Cons. Unfortunately, when you make a late night request, the staff doesn't come up to your room and bring you whatever you need. Aka, we needed some late night towels and we were told to come down to the front desk (all the way from the tower rooms) and get them ourselves. This has never happened to me, especially at a "4-star" resort. In addition, I have been to many spas in my lifetime, and I felt that their spa treatment was very overpriced for the quality of massage received. Overall, we can't decide if we would come back because the positives were so great, and the negatives were so bad! We are 50/50.

Pros. Beds are comfy, helpful and courteous staff, great location. All was great.

Cons. No complaints.

Pros. Location is great right at the mission bay beach front and the oceana restaurant sits facing the mission bay beach. Staff is friendly at hotel as well as the restaurant.

Cons. Stayed at the tower. While wifi connection was excellent and convenient, the rooms need update. In particular, the air conditioner (heater/cooler) spews out bad odor.

The Catamaran Resort and Spa, San Diego

The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is situated between Sail Bay and the Pacific Ocean where San Diego’s Scripps family once had their summer home. The elegant hotel at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive was designed with a 1950s Polynesian vibe. The lobby’s dramatic island Mulberry Tapa (barkcloth) that hangs behind the Tahitian Black Koa wood welcome desk, an exotic stone waterfall and koi pond, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and dark Honduran mahogany finishes welcome guests to a private tropical paradise. Imported traditional Pacific Island artworks adorn the lobby and other shared spaces in the hotel, and complement the colonial Hawaiian architecture.

Catamaran Resort Rooms

There are seven kinds of guest accommodations at the Catamaran that are divided between bay front and garden view choices. Bay front rooms provide a king or two double beds, a sitting area, and a small fridge. Bay front suites have separate bedrooms and couches in the living areas that fold out to beds, plus wet bars and fridges. Bay front suites are between the Tower and Sail Bay. Bay front rooms are in the building next to the suites facing Sail Bay.

Deluxe bay front and garden suites have separate bedrooms and fold-out couches in the living area, but also have kitchens with stoves, ovens, and full-size refrigerators. Bay front and garden studios have full kitchens, two double beds, and dining areas. All deluxe suites and studios are located in the Tower where you can enjoy epic views of either Coronado Bridge and beyond to Mexico, or Crystal Pier and north to La Jolla , depending on your room location.

Many bay front accommodations open to the sandy shores of Sail Bay, separated only by a grassy area. Garden view rooms open to the lush tropical plants and trees throughout the property; some open up to the pond or pool areas. To choose the room location that’s right for you, check out the property map . All rooms have patios or balconies, free HBO, hi-speed wireless Internet (paid upgrade for larger bandwidth), an iPod docking station, coffeemakers, laptop size room safe, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers.

If you want a little more privacy away from the action combined with epic views, choose a room on the upper floors of the Tower. The best bay front rooms and suites are the ones facing Sail Bay. This area is in the heart of the action and convenient to the water, so if you want to watch passersby on the bike/walkway that encircles Sail Bay, get in on one of the many resort activities, or catch an occasional wedding, this is the place to be. Some guests have expressed concern that rooms at the Catamaran are dated, so if aesthetics is your primary reason for choosing this hotel, check out the accommodation videos on their site before making a reservation.

Catamaran Resort Amenities

Ah, amenities. This is where the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa really shines. You will never run out of things to do here. Adults will love Atoll Restaurant, Moray’s Lounge, the Bahia Belle, and the Catamaran Spa. Kids will go wild for the Kids’ Club and Arcade.

There are many wonderful places to eat near the hotel, but if you only eat one time at Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran, make it Sunday Brunch with bottomless mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, take your brunch on the outdoor patio. It’s a little pricey, but oh so worth it.

Moray’s Lounge features local seasonal craft brews as well as a full bar. Happy Hours are daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Appetizers are $10, craft brews are $5, well drinks are $5.50, and house wines are $6. Inside, enjoy their 800 gallon saltwater aquarium and outside enjoy the late afternoon ambiance.

catamaran resort la jolla

Bahia Belle hour-long cruises on Mission Bay are complimentary for Catamaran guests. Choose from family or cocktail sternwheeler cruises. Seasonal dining options are also available aboard the Bahia Belle, and often cocktail cruises feature DJs or live music.

Get your Zen fix at the Asian-inspired Catamaran Spa . Take a few minutes to yourself in the relaxation room with a fruit-infused water, work out in the fitness room, get a facial and make-up for a night out, or enjoy the steam room, sauna, or outdoor hot tub. Go all out and ask about the 2-hour Ritual.

Kids are important at the Catamaran. They’ll love the Kids’ Arcade with Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. Check out Kids’ Corner for more great activities for kids around the resort, the neighborhood, and out and about in San Diego.

These are just a few of dozens of activities at the resort and in the area. Hang out bayside on the beach, walk across the street to the Pacific Ocean for an entirely different beach experience, catch one of Catamaran’s complimentary Movies on the Bay or one of their famous luaus. Try yoga on a standup paddle board or learn to surf. Rent paddle boards, Funcats, kayaks, sail boats, Segways, bicycles, ski boats, you name it. If it says outdoor fun, the Catamaran can hook you up with a great time again and again.

Amenities tip:

Some guests have expressed concern about the costs of equipment rentals at the Catamaran, including steep deposits as much as $100 to $500. The suggestion is to stop by Mission Bay Sportcenter where many of the same rentals can be obtained at cheaper prices. Another frequent guest concern is the $18 per day self-parking fee, so be aware. Parking is tough anywhere in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach and the city does not hesitate to tow away your vehicle; be careful and read all street signs if you try to avoid this fee.

Customer Ratings & Reviews

Tripadvisor traveler rating, left a lot to be desired.

Check in was easy and front desk staff was friendly. I wish there was something in the booking process that warned people there are no elevators or a lift on the bay view buildings. Several trips up and down the stairs during check in, check out, and every time we went to the beach. The property itself was immaculately maintained. However, noise during our stay was awful. Obnoxiously loud Luau the night we arrived. Our room was close enough to the noise to drive us to dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant is just as close and no one could hear anything but screaming. The restaurant needs an entire review on its own. We would possibly stay at the hotel again, but never eat at Ocena again. Why advertise two restaurants that share a single kitchen? One serves the patio and the other serves the dining area. You can get a burger outside, but not inside. Just consolidate the menus and have a single restaurant. Regardless, the food at Ocena was overpriced and inedible. Rooms are no different than an average hotel on hotel circle. Our room was “ok”. Plenty of small issues bordering on “should we say something”. Loose toilet paper holder, spilled shampoo not cleaned in shower, hair and sand all over the floor. All things you’d expect to be there with people and the beach, but there was a sense that housekeeping was just going through the motions and no one was holding to any standards. Trash under the beds and couch, things like that. Not a single trip ruining experience, but enough small things that seemed to be the forefront of conversation on the trip home. I’d rather have been talking about the fun we had. The landscaping crew came bright and early the night after the Luau for nearly two hours, definitely seemed like they were paid by the hour. That paired with the machine they drag across the sand that sounds like a jackhammer was a real treat at 8 am. There was literally a small jackhammer when my daughter was trying to watch the bird show. Someone was fixing some concrete nearby. A little coordination and common sense goes a long way. It’s not like Arizona where you have to get everything done before the sun comes up. The temp is perfect all day, maybe wait till the masses are out and about.

Tropical Family Vacation at our favorite San Diego Resort!

The Catamaran Resort has been a family favorite for my husband growing up and now our family. Its location is perfect located on the bay, and directly across the street from Pacific and Mission Beach. The pool is lovely and they also have a free arcade for kids. My family has visited 4 times in the past year and a half. I keep coming back because we are treated so good. The service given by Hitomi, Manager is above and beyond. She’s been very professional in handling my family’s needs in so many ways. I’m grateful I got to see her again this summer and as always, she welcomed me with her warm smile. She was very generous and left us a fruit and cheese basket with wine as an appreciation gift. Just one example of her kindness. It goes a long way, and we will keep returning! Also, a shout out to Stephen at Oceana this week as he was an amazing server at breakfast.

Better than I expected!!

Loved this hotel and great for families! Stayed in Towers building Resort view. 2 adults and 4 kids. Room had 2 queen beds and a pull out couch. Very roomy. Small kitchenette with small fridge, microwave, toaster oven, coffee machine and sink. Nice balcony. Food was pricey, but yummy. There are parrots, koi ponds, luau's (Thurs and Tues), yoga every morning right on Mission Bay beach behind hotel. Some nights have live music. Mission Beach is directly across the hotel and Mission Bay is right behind the hotel. There was a guy, I think his name is Josh, that works at the water equipment rental right behind the hotel... give him a raise, he is the best!! Honestly the whole staff was wonderful. Thank you for a wonderful mini vacation Catamaran Hotel and Resort! We will be back!

Great Bay Area Location

Resort is in a great location on Mission Bay. There is a 17+ mile run, walk, bath path between the resort and the bay. Beach chairs were comfortable. Restaurants and grocery in walking distance. We had a 1st floor garden view room near the koi pond. Bed was comfortable. Service was good. Pool was nice. Food and drinks were had at restaurant was good. Beautiful setting. Would definitely stay here again.

Great Family Getaway

My husband and I usually attend the summer Sunset Luau and always talked about staying here. Our daughter visited from out of state and we stayed for a couple days, including the Luau in our stay. We stayed in the tower, 8th floor facing the Bay. What a view! Although our suite was dated, it was clean and comfortable - but who stays in their room during vacation. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Our daughter went out for her early morning walk and was able to get us an umbrella with beach chairs in front row facing the bay (being that they’re on a 1st come basis). We absolutely loved the ambiance…. Polynesia in San Diego! Great Luau, great food, friendly and caring staff all the way around. We’ll most certainly return to the Catamaran and Luau!

We stayed in their Bayfront Suite while visiting which I highly recommend to anyone interested in booking a stay!  From our front door we could see (and loudly hear) the lobby’s waterfall.  I would open the door often just to hear the sound of the soothing water.

From the back-door we were right along Mission Bay.  During the evening’s luau we literally got to watch and appreciate the show right from our hotel room!

Personal Experience

I have visited the Catamaran Resort in the past for their luau and was blown away with how beautiful this property is.  Immediately when you enter the lobby you are greeted with a 20 foot waterfall complete with live orchids and other exotic plants growing out of it. It such a welcoming spectacle to see!

It’s ‘Shark Summer’ at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla

catamaran resort la jolla

The Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is making a splash this season with the introduction of a new “shark summer” program.

Sharks will take the spotlight at Birch Aquarium La Jolla this summer as the organizations “celebrates the vital role sharks play in the ecosystem, while shining a light on the important conservation work and research being done to protect them.”

Shark Summer at Birch Aquarium will kick off on Saturday, July 13 and will run through July 31. Special shark-themed activities and exhibits will be offered during normal business hours, with most included in general admission.

For example, on Tuesdays and Thursday at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., guests can join Birch Aquarium staff to see a feeding of their sharks and rays.

On Saturdays and Sundays, there will be special Shark Exploration Stations that will let guests get a first-hand look at how aquarium staff care for sharks, learn about the local sharks and ray species that live off the La Jolla coast, and interact with a team of shark specialists.

For those aged 21 or older, there will also be a special shark-themed Oceans at Night on July 21. The event will feature live music, games, a Kelp Forest Dive, and more from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Want to make the most of your Shark Summer trip? Check out our itinerary for a perfect day at Birch Aquarium . Those feeling more adventurous can check out our guide to swimming with leopard sharks in La Jolla.

Best Luau in California!

It is the best Luau I have attended in California. It made me feel as if I were actually in Hawaii. The dancers were highly skilled, professional, and beautiful, their whole program was outstanding. The food was abundant. They had a good variety of salads, entrees, and desserts. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole luau, the cost is well worth an evening of good food and great entertainment. I would love to return again next year.

Highly Recommend Private Luau Experience

I coordinated with the Catamaran to host a private luau and buffet for my company. We got a lot of positive feedback about the event from our guests at the end of the night - many of them were hoping we could do it again next year! I would highly recommend the Catamaran's sunset luau for large, private gatherings.

Trip Advisor logo

Audience Participation at the Luau!

The musicians were great, and the dancers' costumes were fantastic. The fire dancer was amazing. A very enjoyable evening of food and entertainment. One complimentary Mai Tai and Lei upon entry. The luau experience was worth it. Other folks at our table were returning because they really enjoyed their experience last year. The luau also has audience participation, which is great for young and old.

This property is beautiful

My granddaughter and I enjoyed the waterfall, fish, ducks, and parrots. The pool and hot tub were nice and open at night when we wanted to relax. We did the VIP luau and really enjoyed it. The food was amazing, the real flower leis were gorgeous, and the show was entertaining. We were also treated to a Mai Tai drink in a souvenir cup and a non-alcohol drink in a pineapple cup for my granddaughter. We made some special memories together.
