Innovative naval architect and boat designer
New Zealand based LOMOcean Marine - naval architect and boat designer - offers custom and production boat designs to the global market, tailored to the specific requirements of each client. The result is an ever expanding range of mono-hull, catamaran, trimaran and wavepiercer designs for the pleasure, commercial (ferry, tug, crew boat, work boat etc), military (fast interceptors, patrol craft, missile boats) and super yacht markets (including shadow boats). These designs are developed with the assistance of modern CFD and FEA software and honed in the towing tank and wind tunnel. A passion for innovation has created remarkable ships including stealth military vessels such as the trimarans Klewang and Golok, an 18m tank boat and award winning designs, including Ultimate Lady, a 27m wavepiercer catamaran and the 39m catamaran, The Beast. The radical Earthrace (Ady Gil) smashed the UIM world circumnavigation record for a power boat and Turanor Planet Solar was the first ever solar vehicle to circle the globe. Not all the designs are radical; the conservative motor yacht Black Pearl is a demonstration of the company’s versatility.

Matthias Gibson BDes(Hons) AMRINA Nav.Archit
Matthias Gibson was born into a family with deep ties to the seafaring industry, including his great grandfather being a former deep sea fisherman and his father looking for any opportunity he could find to sail. It only seemed natural that Matt would grow up inspired by these experiences, eventually pursuing boat design as an academic program at Massey University. After seventeen years of design experience – from high-speed planing craft to super yachts and more – Matt took it upon himself on embarking on this mission professionally; founding Build Boats alongside many successes along the way.

Find out more about Lion New Zealand, her build and races.
LION NEW ZEALAND
Sir Peter Blake had a very specific idea of the boat that he wanted to build for the 1985/86 Whitbread Around the World Race. After discussions with a number of top New Zealand yacht designers the design was awarded to New Zealander Ron Holland, based in Ireland.
The boat had to have the following criteria: 31 tons actual displacement weight (light but stiff)
It needed to excel to windward
It had to be very fast when reaching under two sails
It had to be fully controllable downwind with a spinnaker up
It had to be a masthead rig
The result was one of the finest International Ocean Racing (I.O.R). maxi sloops ever built.
See Lion New Zealand for yourself, inside and out, here:
Construction of Lion NZ began in 1983, with a launch date set for November 1984. This was to coincide with the Sydney to Hobart Race beginning on Boxing Day - her first real test. Unfortunately, on completion Lion NZ came in 8 tons heavier that the original design draft and to make matters worse all the weight was in the wrong places, her hull and fittings. It became apparent that the extra weight was going to slow the boat down in lighter conditions. Lion's first race - the 1984 Sydney to Hobart Race - was a true test. After 3 days, 11 hours, 31 minutes, 21 seconds Lion NZ crossed the finish Lion in First Place. She had proven her strength and gained the nickname, "The Urban Assault Vehicle".
Lion NZ went on to finish a commendable 2nd Place in the Whitbread Around the World Race.
LION NEW ZEALAND AND STEINLAGER2 ARE TWO YACHTS THAT DREAMS WERE MADE OF.
They founded many successful careers for kiwi sailors and inspired many more. We want to ensure that these legendary yachts from New Zealand's sailing history are preserved and utilised to help inspire the next generation of young New Zealanders.
ADVENTURE, THE SEA, COMPETITION, CAMARADERIE, AND NATIONAL PRIDE.
Join the men and women who sail upon these boats, learn the stories of the sailors, what inspired them and how they overcame adversity, scepticism and fear to win the hearts not only of New Zealand but of the World.

Explore New Zealand by yacht
Published 13 May 2024
New Zealand is a country that has it all. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, in the South Island you can climb glaciers. You can find vineyards, bungee jumping, whale-watching from the beach and legendary fish and chips on your New Zealand yacht charter.
Many of the coastal areas enjoy good temperatures year-round, not to mention optimal sailing conditions and a topographic landscape that is hard to outshine for its natural beauty. Planning a yacht charter to this island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean is all about fun, exploration, and adventure.
Auckland, City of Sails
Based around two large harbours, Auckland is renowned for its beaches, rainforest-covered ranges, and numerous islands. Known as the City of Sails, so-called for the number of yachts that sail in the harbours and adjoining Hauraki Gulf. Its distinctive cruising grounds make it well-positioned to start or end a yacht charter.
Waiheke Island
As the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand and just a 30-minute cruise from Auckland, Waiheke Island is a popular yachting hub. There you will find boutique vineyards, aromatic olive groves and long stretches of golden sandy beaches. Drop anchor in a secluded bay or venture inland to hike the island’s bush-clad hills.
Bay of Islands
This subtropical micro-region comprises 140 islands. Marlin, tuna, kingfish, and snappers cruise these grounds, making it a destination stop for some serious big-game fishing. The 19th century whaling port of Russell mixes colonial influences with a cosmopolitan waterfront promenade. Now declared a marine reserve, wildlife flourishes here.
Snorkel, fish or kayak
Deep Water Cove (Maunganui Bay) on the Cape Brett Peninsula is a snorkelling haven, favoured for the clarity of its water and the abundance of marine life. Two highlights include reef snorkeling where a large variety of fish gather, and a scenic archway with an amazing underwater garden. For those not wanting to spend all day in the water, venture along the coast by kayak.
Hole in the Rock
The Bay of Islands ’ famed Motu Kōkako or Hole in the Rock is a must-see natural rock formation - it's large enough to cruise through on a tender, and found at the northern tip of Cape Brett. The tiny island holds great cultural significance for the Ngāpuhi iwi tribe and remains Māori freehold land, administered by the Motu Kōkako Ahu Whenua Trust. It’s also in near pristine condition, with no evidence of introduced animals and more than 99 different types of flora.
Explore the historic town of Russell
A stroll along the oceanfront promenade will take you past original street names, and buildings that date back to the 1830s, including cafes, restaurants, and art galleries. Russell was originally the country’s first seaport, but today visitors like to find the beaches away from the hustle of town, such as Oneroa Bay, where you can swim, fish and picnic on the sand.
Coromandel Peninsula
If you are looking for beaches with a laidback vibe, then the Coromandel Peninsula is your place. The 85km (53mile) long peninsula serves as a natural barrier protecting the Hauraki Gulf from the mighty Pacific Ocean. It gives rise to steamy geothermal waters where visitors can dig their own private hot pool, as well as bush walks through the lush vegetation and the heritage Hauraki Rail Trail, which is a cyclist’s dream.
Marlborough Sounds
The Marlborough Sounds is a collection of ancient sunken river valleys filled with the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Caused by land subsidence and rising sea levels, it’s known today as a paradise of secluded bays, and a must on your charter itinerary. Equally well suited to quiet reflection in sheltered coves or a day of watersports, it also offers some memorable hikes with epic vistas for those who reach the top.
Wellington, the capital
Finish your New Zealand yacht charter in the capital city of Wellington, known for colourful timber houses and restaurants - with more eateries and bars per capita than New York City. On occasion, strong winds blow through the Cook Strait, leading to the nickname ‘Windy Wellington,’ but for those on a sailing yacht charter, it’s a welcome sea breeze and idyllic end to a yachting vacation.

Meet 8 Designers That Are Creating Sleek, Weather-Proof Furniture for Your Yacht
Posted: June 14, 2023 | Last updated: June 14, 2023
5.-maybe-lead-Beach-Club-4-copia-scaled
When it comes to superyacht furniture, wear and tear from guest use is just one challenge to keeping everything in pristine condition. The harsh conditions of a marine environment, including the 3S’s (salt, sand, and sunlight) pose the biggest trials and tribulations to outdoor furniture, while the fourth S, sunscreen, can really mess up that beautiful designer lounge in the main salon.
The problem is so acute that a number of yacht designers have expanded their portfolios from designing hulls and interiors to creating furniture that will stand the tests of weather and guests. They are using special fabrics, sustainable materials, and creative weaves in custom furniture lines that dress up the beach clubs and salons, rather than making these social areas dowdy after a season. Others are focused on the interior with vibrant designs, unusual shapes, and heirloom-quality woods.
These eight furniture lines all sport unique designs—from stunning starburst tables to lounges that float—but all have the same goal: Letting everyone put their feet up and enjoy the furniture, without the owners having to wonder later how they’ll restore everything so it looks new again.
Oceana by Bannenberg & Rowell
British studio Bannenberg & Rowell’s spring 2023 collection of outdoor yacht furniture was developed in collaboration with Sutherland Furniture and named after the Jon Bannenberg-designed 180-foot yacht Oceana . Made from teak with stainless-steel accents, the 10-strong collection of seating and tables is built to withstand high seas. “The most obvious signature across the range is that combination of a tactile radial junction with a stainless-steel dowelled-mortice and tenon-style joint,” designer Simon Rowell tells Robb Report , who then translates: “This frame is designed to look simple but still took several years to develop with the Sutherland team to engineer it into a viable product range.” An exterior textile and rug range that complements the Oceana furniture is also available from Sutherland sister company Perennials.
Arc by Winch Design
Winch Design’s debut collection with Summit Furniture, called Arc, is a contemporary beach club range made from teak and inspired by the sea and sky. Its signature feature is a laminated teak weave spun between brushed stainless-steel rods to create an arc that echoes the woven rope traditionally used on sailing yachts. The eight-piece range includes a lounge chair, a dining chair, a bar chair, a coffee table, a sun lounge, a bar cart, a dining table, and an occasional table, featuring fully customizable fabric. Every natural detail is brought forward, including the teak grain on top of the coffee tables, which are manipulated into leaf patterns.
IYC + Neal Jones Furniture
British brand Neal Jones Furniture specializes in the creation of fitted and freestanding custom and semi-custom furniture for superyachts and high-end residences. In 2023, IYC partnered with Neal Jones to provide a tailored design service for yacht owners looking to dress their new builds or refit projects with hand-crafted furniture built with the marine environment in mind, from bar stools and foot stools to daybeds and lounges. “Being that one-stop-shop for all yacht purchasers and having people with the expertise in every aspect of yachts is key to our business and delights our customers,” says IYC CEO Raphael Sauleau. “Having a company like Neal Jones Furniture allows us to give our customers all the options they need to fit their yacht in the very best furniture.”
The Nimbus Collection by Coast New Zealand
Suitable for a sun deck, beach set-up, or even on the water, the Nimbus Collection by superyacht supplier Coast New Zealand is comprised of inflatable furniture suited to multiple settings. The lounge, orbit, and chair are available in customizable colors and fabrics made by Sunbrella. But beyond the looks, they are designed to be comfortable, long lasting, portable, and convenient. The air-filled liners are manufactured using fabrics and technology traditionally used for paddle boards or tenders, such as marine grade reinforced PVC with heat sealed seams (rather than glue which melts in the sun.) Marine-grade stainless ‘D’ rings are included for securing the furniture to a deck. The furniture also comes with a USB rechargeable pump and a storage bag made from recycled sails.
The Lounge Collection by Eva Mechler
Award-winning furniture designer and Master Furniture Maker Eva Mechler specializes in made-to-order wooden furniture, hand-crafted at her workshop in northern Germany. The Lounge Collection is made using solid wood left over from the building of superyachts, including European native species of oak, chestnut, ash, and walnut. The first prototypes were made from a sustainable “modified wood” called Tesumo developed by Lürssen Yachts and Wolz Nautic. Conceived as an alternative to teak and selected by the owner of REV Ocean for use on the yacht’s exterior decking, Tesumo is strong, durable, and more resistant to weathering than other woods. Mechler’s collectible art-furniture earned her a place as a finalist for the Smart Yacht Award at the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous in 2023.
Onde by Cristiano Gatto
Driven by a desire to create fully custom furniture that matches his boats, superyacht designer Cristiano Gatto has collated his debut furniture range, called Onde. The catch: It is only available to owners of a Gatto-designed yacht, such as Heesen’s Project Orion, which is due to deliver in 2026 and features Onde furniture on board. The 12-piece range features key items from past projects, each one taking up to six months to build. “I have clients who changed their loose exterior yacht furniture four times in the past six years because off-the-shelf ranges can’t withstand the harsh marine environment,” Gatto tells Robb Report . Made from wood, stainless steel, carbon fiber, and polymeric materials, the range includes tables, chairs, sunbeds, and the most difficult item to manufacture: the basic, unassuming ottoman.
Paola Lenti 2023 Collection
The new indoor and outdoor 2023 Collections from yachting furniture stalwart Paola Lenti was unveiled by the brand during Milan Design Week, hosted at its newly unveiled flagship store. The range is made from eco-friendly materials, such as 1,000-year-old river wood which has been preserved over time by gravel, sand, and clay. There are also outdoor textiles and fine yarns for the interior pieces, all made to be wear-resistant and recyclable.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos
- Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
- In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
- These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.
The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .
A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.
Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.
Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.
"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.
While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.
A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.
One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.
Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.
Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona
Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.
The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.
Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.
Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.
"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."
Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad
Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.
The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.
Eric Schmidt: Whisper
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.
The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.
While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.
Barry Diller: Eos
Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.
One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.
The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.
Jim Clark: Athena
Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.
"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."
Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.
"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.
The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.
Larry Ellison: Musashi
Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .
He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.
Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.
Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .
Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus
Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.
After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.
"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."
Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.
"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."
Charles Simonyi: Norn
Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.
Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.
Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.
"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .
Sergey Brin: Dragonfly
Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."
Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.
Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.
The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.
