• Cómo elegir la ropa de navegación: qué llevar

Navegar no es sólo una semana para tomar el sol en un barco en el Mediterráneo. Especialmente en primavera y otoño, las temperaturas tienden a fluctuar mucho durante el día y los vientos, junto con la ocasional lluvia de agua de mar, no contribuyen a la comodidad. En tales condiciones, la ropa de navegación adecuada puede ayudarle a mantenerse caliente y seco. ¿Qué debe comprar exactamente? ¿Qué hay que buscar? ¿Y en qué vale la pena gastar dinero para las travesías más exigentes?

¿Por qué elegir ropa especializada para la navegación?

Puede que se te ocurra que no es realmente necesario comprar ropa específica para navegar cuando ya tienes en casa un cortavientos perfectamente válido. Y para el verano, ya tienes una elegante camiseta de rayas y unos pantalones cortos. Son buenas ideas... pero no son las mejores opciones. ¿Por qué? Porque la ropa de navegación debe ser capaz de soportar condiciones completamente diferentes para las que ha sido especialmente desarrollada.

¿Qué hace que la ropa de vela sea especial?

• El tejido debe ser capaz de soportar la sal .
• El tejido debe ser apto para condiciones de humedad y mojado (secado rápido, impermeable o repelente al agua) o para la luz solar directa (filtro UV).
• El tejido debe ser muy resistente para poder soportar la fricción, el movimiento y el contacto con el barco.
• El corte debe respetar las especificidades del movimiento a bordo, así como la meteorología (cuello alto, partes reforzadas, elementos ajustables).

¿Qué ocurre con la ropa normal durante la navegación? La sal obstruye rápidamente la membrana del tejido y deja de cumplir su función. La ropa también se desgasta o se estropea mucho más rápido . O lo que es peor, te dejan mojado y helado.

Por supuesto, algunas prendas son universales y pueden usarse en la montaña, en viajes y a bordo de un barco. Se trata de prendas como la ropa interior funcional que puedes utilizar como capa inferior o los calcetines calientes en los cruceros de primavera u otoño. Recuerda que el uso de capas es lo más adecuado . Es mejor tener varias capas finas que una gruesa. No hay que hacer concesiones.

¿Comprar o no comprar?

¿Por qué invertir en marcas especializadas y no en cadenas comerciales?

La sal puede causar muchos problemas. Corroe los puños, obstruye las membranas, daña el tejido y el color. Por lo tanto, lo más importante es aclarar siempre la ropa con agua dulce lo antes posible. Lo ideal es utilizar una manguera en la marina y dar una buena ducha a la ropa.

De vez en cuando es bueno lavar la ropa con un detergente suave/especial para evitar que se obstruyan las membranas, lo que reduciría la eficacia de la ropa. Ni que decir tiene que el uso de suavizante es un claro no-no. Además de obstruir la membrana y, por tanto, destruir prácticamente la funcionalidad de la ropa, su uso contamina innecesariamente el medio ambiente y nuestro organismo.

Navis Marine

Established in 1999,  Navis Marine  is a sailing clothing manufacturer specializing in designing and manufacturing performance foul weather gear for coastal and offshore sailing.

Navis Marine has a rigorous research and development process. The team is always looking for ways to innovate, blending new technology with feedback from their customers, and test sailors to create unique apparel solutions. The Navis Marine design team looked for materials with the same properties; able to work with the body and protect against the elements. However, they use lighter and more breathable materials than traditional marine fabrics.

Reasons to Avoid: Premium price may not suit occasional sailors.

The higher collar on this with the more substantial hood give away the fact that this jacket is designed for offshore sailing. A longer cut in the body means a good overlap between your waterproof pant or salopette and this jacket so you can move about easily without water getting in too easily.

The higher spume flap that covers the gap in the collar can be rolled away for stowage and the flap comes up high enough to cover the nose. The reflectors on shoulders and chest as well as on various piping sections on the collar and zip edges mean this jacket is designed to be seen in the dark. This Jacket is a good compromise between the lighter weight coastal jackets and the heavy weight ocean going jackets and for most people in most circumstances this jacket would see you through most conditions we would see on the most adventurous sailing season.

Reasons to Avoid: If you are a hard core gnarly sailor then this might not stand up to the rigors of daily use, all day every day 365. But for most people it’s totally fine.

What they’re saying is, that in the old days you had to pay for high level HPX gear to get this level of waterproofing and abrasion resistance. These days the BR2 is really very good kit indeed and great value too, allowing you to wear some great waterproof sailing gear at the level that most moderately adventurous seasonal leisure sailors will find perfectly good without having to pay both and arm and a leg for.

Musto Sardinia Jacket 2.0

Best lightweight Musto jacket

Specifications: Weight – 652g | Sizes – S-XL | Choice of colours – 7 | Materials – BR1 fabric, waterproof, windproof, and rollaway hood.

Reasons to buy: The mesh lining for enhanced comfort against your base layer. It features a zipped side and chest pockets. Plus, it has a detachable and adjustable hood with a stiffened peak.

Reasons to avoid:  Not designed for winter sailing so you would need to buy another sailing jacket.

Economical and very lightweight is the best way to describe the Musto Sardinia Jacket 2.0. If you’re out at sea for day sailing in the summer, this is essential.

It uses the same two-layer BR1 fabric Musto uses for its full-specification BR1 inshore jacket. It has a detachable hood, plus four pockets, including an inner chest pocket that gives valuables some protection from the wet weather.

On the downside, there are no hand-warmer pockets, the collar is not fleece-lined and there’s no inner cuff seal.

Nevertheless, it’s lightweight, packs super-small, is comfortable and doesn’t restrict movement. You won’t need anything better for many decent summer days and it can be worn ashore as well.

Musto Women’s Corsica Sailing Jacket

Specifications: colours: Cobalt blue, navy blue, grey and black, sizes 8-18. BR1 fabric, waterproof, breathable, and adjustable hem.

Reasons to Buy: Versatile for coastal sailing, lightweight, and comfortable.

Reasons to Avoid: May not offer the same level of protection as offshore models.

Everyone should have a lightweight jacket tucked away in their kit bag for those lovely summer days when the breeze can be a bit chilly at night or for heading ashore.

The Corsica jacket comes in 4 different colour options and is a simple lightweight jacket that can withstand a bit of spray or some summer showers. It’s light, comfortable and a sailors wardrobe staple. Inexpensive as sailing jackets go, I have several jackets like this and if I start to get a bit damp or cold while sailing, I simply throw another heavier weight sailing jacket right over the top of one of these.

Musto BR1 Solent Jacket

Specifications: BR1 fabric, waterproof, windproof, adjustable hood, and fleece lining.

Reasons to buy: It is an extremely comfortable and well-made jacket. The men’s and women’s jackets offer the same features.

Reasons to avoid: This is an inshore jacket rather than a coastal one. We would not recommend using this option in stormy conditions.

On test, it was clear that the Musto’s BR1 inshore jacket is a lightweight choice, reflecting the fact that this is very much an inshore rather than a coastal jacket.

With no external storm flap, the jacket has a waterproof zip and internal storm flap, which keeps water out.

A fleece-lined mid-height collar contains a roll-away hood with a small peak, volume adjustment and side adjusters. We liked the hi-vis yellow detail on the collar.

There are just two external pockets with zip closures and fleece handwarmer linings.

The single cuffs are adjustable but lack inner cuffs. Inside, it was good to see two zipped chest pockets for keeping a phone and keys, and the jacket and hood have a simple mesh liner.

Musto WOMEN’S BR1 CHANNEL JACKET

Specifications: sizes 8-16, colours red, navy and black

Reasons to buy: It features a double storm flap, fluorescent hood and fleece-lined handwarmer pockets.

Reasons to avoid:  At the pricier end for a waterproof jacket.

This classic cut ladies jacket forms a reliable outer layer that stays completely waterproof in persistent showers when sailing along the coast. The 2-way YKK front zip sits between double storm flaps for protection. Handwarmer pockets are lined with brushed fleece for comfort.

The two-layer fabric has a significantly higher level of water resistance than inshore products. The higher wet abrasion resistance means that the fabric stays drier for longer which is ideal for when you’re working out on the deck in the rain.

The articulated cut ensures freedom of movement and there’s a double storm flap, fluorescent hood and high fleece-lined collar.

There are also fleece hand warmer pockets, plus two cargo pockets, an internal zipped pocket and a sunglasses pocket. The reflective detailing shows up clearly at night and there are double waterproof cuffs.

Specifications : Gore-Tex Pro fabric, fully waterproof, adjustable hood, and stretch panels.

Reasons to Buy: Designed for racing, top-tier waterproofing, breathability, and movement.

Reasons to Avoid: Premium price, specifically tailored for competitive sailors.

This LPX jacket is designed for lightweight sailing performance in relatively sheltered waters but if the reviews by other wearers are anything to go by then a lot of people use the jackets just like I do, which is to say, I wear this type of jacket offshore during ocean passages when the weather allows.

The jacket is nicely designed with good shaping allowing for freedom of movement and the zip off hood means you can keep the collar bulk to a minimum. The collar has a comfy and cosy brushed tricot inside it which means you are less likely to get a sore spot on your neck when repeatedly looking up at the burgee.

The jacket doesn’t look too bad when wandering ashore for the evening, especially if you’ve travelled light for a regatta week.

Musto MEN’S MPX GORE-TEX PRO OFFSHORE JACKET 2.0

Specifications : Sizes: XS-3XL, Colours, Red, Black, Storm Cloud Blue, Gold. Gore-Tex Pro fabric, fully waterproof, adjustable cuffs, and high collar.

Reasons to Buy : Exceptional waterproofing, breathability, and durability for demanding offshore conditions.

Reasons to Avoid: Premium price may not be suitable for budget-conscious buyers.

If you’ve ever tried on one of these MPX offshore jackets then you’ll know how high that collar is.

Designed for some serious offshore use, the MPX offshore pro jacket has lots of design elements previously seen in the HPX range.

This one has 1 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro fabric construction, which gives excellent waterproofing. It has good breathability too as a consequence of the Gore-Tex construction. I still find that I create my own condensation on the insides of my Gore-Tex jackets so they’re not completely perfect. They have double sealing cuffs and that high collar covers your ears to keep the wind out.

With the longer length jackets of this type, you’ll find two way zips that allow for unzipping the bottom to allow for slightly better leg articulation if you need clamber about a bit such as when putting a reef in or humping heavy sails around.

Reasons to Avoid: Premium price may not be suitable for budget-conscious buyers. Heavier jacket is not suitable for lightweight regatta use or summer inshore sailing.

I love this jacket, it has all the features I look for in a decent quality offshore jacket designed for women. One thing it does lack though is the choice of yellow. I have no idea why manufacturers decide to skip that option for women in the higher end gear. The mens version of this jacket does have the yellow or gold as they call it colour option.

Anyway, that gripe aside, this is a blooming excellent choice of offshore jacket. plenty of well thought out features on this, with the adjustable inner cuffs, the adjustable hood, the decent capacity pockets and so on. The collar is high enough to cover your ears and if you pull that spume guard over, it will cover your nose and you’ll be able to comfortably breath in your own coffee/tea breath for hours on end, nice and cosy.

I have been known in the past to put my large foulie jacket on with the high collar simply to have a snooze. The high collar helps to stop your head lolling about while you have a little powernap while sitting up. Thumbs up from me for this MPX jacket from Musto.

Reasons to Avoid: You’ll need deep pockets for this one. Total overkill for anyone casually sailing by the coast or fair weather sailing. Those Musto boffins don’t think it necessary to make these in a women’s cut.

Musto has this to say “Proven by Volvo Ocean Race sailors to withstand extreme Southern Ocean conditions. The HPX GORE-TEX® Pro Series Smock has been engineered from the toughest GORE-TEX® Pro fabric with an Ocean Technology® membrane and GORE™ Micro Grid Backer. Incredibly waterproof, breathable, highly durable and snag-resistant. The minimum number of fabric panels means fewer seams, creating a lighter and stronger smock. Latex seals and a high collar keep out the water and ProVISION windows in the hood give you enhanced peripheral vision.”

I’m inclined to agree. Differences between this and the HPX jacket are that the smock doesn’t have a chest handwarmer pocket and is lighter weight due to the removal of zips and hardware. The collar and hood is actually described as a pod, and it can be removed. The smock has a rubber neck seal so that you can remove the collar for better head articulation.

The only step higher than this HPX smock is the sailing dry suit. And that’s the subject of a whole other buyers guide than one for Musto jackets.

If you can get over the claustrophobic feeling of putting a smock over your head while sailing, (I’ve seen a few people come over all unnecessary when donning theirs at sea) then they are far superior to jackets when you’re stuck out in some truly foul weather.

What’s the best Musto jacket for me?

If you’re wondering which Musto jacket you should choose out of their extensive range, then that depends entirely on what kind of boating you do and where you most often go.

If you are coastal hopping in fair weather, then you’ll be fine with a lightweight inshore or coastal jacket.

If you regularly go channel hopping or out of sight of land then you’ll be better opting for a coastal or offshore model.

If you want to head off across an ocean or make long passages well out of sight of land then you might opt for an ocean category of jacket or smock. or even a dry suit.

I always wear the lightest jacket I possibly can for the situation. I often wear a lightweight inshore jacket even out on the ocean if the weather is nice because it much easier to move around in and costs less to replace than my big heavy duty jacket.

So really, you probably should have more than one jacket, one for light weight duty when you want to keep the cool breeze out and aren’t getting drenched with green waves over the decks and then something a bit more robust for those times when the weather turns foul and you’re stuck in it.

Winter Boating: best boat clothing for warmth

The cold takes off: here is the best clothing for winter boating

From October to February, a far-sighted skipper should therefore get organized and organize his crew so that everyone can adequately fight cold and moisture. Saying that it is essential to dress appropriately could seem trivial but our experience has clearly shown us that a large number of people still do not know how do dress and therefore stress the others with their complaints. Moisture comes not only from the outside but is also released from the skin which, in case of non-rational dressing, condenses quickly, with the final result of being completely wet even in a total absence of water sprays or rain.

Best winter boat clothing to stay warm and dry

The best option is wearing a heavy flannel shirt above a light high-necked sweater.

Take a walk in a port when fishing boats return and you will notice that this is the “winter uniform” all crews usually wear. Without reading any authoritative nautical manuals or glossy yachting magazines, fishermen have tested the perfect transpiration of this type of clothing since remote times: wool guarantees and generates an air cushion that keep warm while flannel prevents hot air, and therefore the body warmth, to disperse quickly.

Only in more recent years, fleece sweatshirts and suits have entered the market , with their extreme efficiency even in the worst winter days, and not only at sea. These new products have the ability to increase the effect of wool to 20 times, with consequent caloric results that are not exempt from some precautions. The categorical imperative for winter boating is to always wear, over the fleece, a sailing jacket that prevents air from penetrating into the fabric while preventing this garment from being crushed.

As mentioned above, trying to stay dry and avoid condensation when facing winter boating is essential. Well, fleece significantly reduces this risk , even when worn under a conventional plastic sailing jacket. However, in winter, the best option is to wear a Gore-tex garment, even if these very expensive clothes have a shorter life span than other traditional sailing jackets.

Then, don’t forget to wear a wool cap, or even better, a ski mask to also protect your neck. A spare wool scarf is the best solution against moisture, as well as a good prevention against premature cervical arthrosis.

For your hands, there are two possible solutions: if you have to work and you need to maintain sensitivity on your fingers, be prepared to suffer the cold anyway; if, instead, you will be at the helm, or simply on guard, there is no better alternative than mittens.

There is no doubt. Application categories no longer exist and there is no more difference between ski and boat clothing. The goal is similar: increasingly warm and dry and l ess bundled up . So if your boat is still in the water and you have no other mandatory commitments next weekend, whether or not winter has already arrived in your area, how about … taking a little trip?

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!
