Scottish Marina Celebrates 40 Years: Largs Yacht Haven

largs yacht haven marina

With 730 berths, and a safe and sheltered location on the Clyde at the gateway to the west coast cruising grounds among its many attributes, it’s not surprising Largs Yacht Haven continues to hold its reputation as one of finest Scottish marinas writes Sue Pelling .

entry-into-Largs-scottish-marina

About this Scottish marina

Largs Yacht Haven, which celebrates its 40 th anniversary this year, is located within the sheltered waters of the Firth of Clyde. Yacht Havens built and opened this Scottish marina back in 1984 from a stretch of virgin beach just to the south of the delightful coastal town of Largs and is now a notable Five Gold Anchor marina with a good reputation.

Not only does keeping a yacht in this marina offer peace of mind in terms of shelter and 24-hour security, but because of its convenient location – approximately 30 miles from Glasgow – Airport, and with train connections – it also attracts commuters as well as locals. The allure of berthing a yacht at the gateway to the west coast of Scotland and spending the spring or summer exploring the western isles has become more and more doable thanks improved travel links and budget airlines.

Its convenient location, and world class sailing area are also among the reason why Largs has become a favourite venue for hosting national and international sailing events. This Scottish marina is home to Largs Sailing Club, the Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing Club, Fairlie Yacht Club, and is the Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust . As you can imagine, it is a hub of activity throughout the year, with the August Bank Holiday Largs Regatta Festival, and the Scottish Two-handed Race Scotland’s two of the most popular local events, which regularly attract a huge following.

yacht-exiting-Largs-Yacht-Haven-marina

Given its broad appeal, you’ll find the facilities at Largs Yacht Haven are high end and offer everything you’d expect from a Yacht Havens facility including the group’s friendly helpful staff that ensure your stay is as stress-free as possible. The marina is staffed 24/7 and accessible at all states of the tide.

arial-view-Largs-yacht-haven-scottish-marina

Passage Planning for this Scottish marina

The approach to this Scottish marina is via the Largs Channel and, from the south, is between Little Cumbrae Island and Farland Head on the mainland. Navigation lights mark the port and starboard breakwaters (occulting 10 secs). The deepwater approaches to the entrance are marked with a lit safe water mark. (L.Fl.10s).

Because the marina is well-protected by the adjacent Cumbrae Islands and the islands to the west it possible to enter the marina most conditions. However, in a big breeze, significant swell can develop in the Largs channel on the approach.

Cruising Aground

Given its location amidst lochs and islands, there is so much to see and do. The cruising is exceptional with interesting fishing villages and harbours to explore as close as a half-hour sail away. The inner Clyde provides an excellent opportunity for day cruising, while the more expansive west coast and Ireland are just a day’s sail away.

sailing-Clyde-Scotland-racing-near-Largs

For a short hop 4nm away, Millport at the southern end the Isle of Cumbrae is a good option. Known as the ‘Jewel of the Clyde’ this is a great spot for those with families because as well as a sandy beach, there are plenty of shopping, golf, fishing and cycling opportunities.

For another short passage, head to Rothesay (Isle of Bute) just 6nm north. This is a pretty fishing harbour and a lively town with shops, restaurants, and pubs just a few steps from the harbour. The visitor pontoons are in Rothesay harbour and nearby Port Bannatyne.

There is plenty to see and do on Loch Fyne too, with Tarbert 22nm from Largs. This quaint and atmospheric fishing village offers fantastic views from Robert the Bruce’s 14th century castle and it’s a great place for a hike to the pretty shell-lined beach at the end of Pier Road.

Sail approximately 16nm southwest from Largs and you’ll reach Brodick on the Isle of Arran. With plenty of hills and beautiful views it’s another great place for hike, plus the village has lots to offer including hotels, restaurants, and a golf course. Brodick Castle is also well worth a visit.

A trip to Troon Yacht Haven – sister marina to Largs Yacht Haven is a must because as a berth holder not least because you get reciprocal mooring. It’s just 20nm down the coast from Largs and is blessed with beautiful scenery, and some of the finest golf courses in the world. It’s also a recommended place for fine dining with cocktails on the terrace at Scotts, which overlooks the marina.

Largs is not that far, relatively speaking, from Ardrishaig either, just 32nm taking in the scenic Kyles of Bute. Ardrishaig marks the start of the Crinan Canal, which is effectively a short cut to the Argyll coast and islands, Skye, and the Outer Hebrides and beyond.

Ideal for larger yachts who wish to remain barnacle free all year round. Boat cleaning We recommend a lift and scrub at least once a year to maintain the efficiency and performance of your boat. Your boat will be given a pressure wash within the cost of a lift. Yacht Tuition Largs Yacht Haven offer a marina professional scheme to owners who would like to take advantage of onboard tuition from anything for an hour to a whole week. Motorhome Park We are licenced with the Caravan and Motorhome Club to provide 5 serviced pitches throughout the year.

Did you know Largs offers free storage ashore to annual berth holders?

A Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust We’re incredibly proud that Largs Yacht Haven is the Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, enabling us to fully support this great endeavour both voluntarily and financially. The 10 year old charitable trust’s new Scottish base was opened in late 2014 and continues to assist young people recovering from cancer and leukaemia through sailing.

FISHFINDERS

In May 2017 a flotilla of yachts led the Trust’s 44ft SY Moonspray out of Largs Yacht Haven marina to begin her 2,400-mile Round Britain adventure.

“ Round Britain is about a lot more than sailing – it is about rebuilding the confidence, self-belief and independence of those involved – bringing back in to focus positive options which have been unimaginable during treatment.” Dame Ellen MacArthur The voyage saw 100 young people in recovery from cancer sailing around Britain in a national relay to celebrate their achievement and realise their potential. The aim of the project was to increase national awareness by visiting towns, cities and cancer treatment centres around the UK, before returning to Largs Yacht Haven in September. We look forward to continuing our support of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust throughout 2019 and beyond. For more information: www.emcancertrust.org

Cruising Inspiration Our top cruising destinations Largs Yacht Haven is based perfectly amongst lochs and islands with fishing villages and harbours as near as half an hour sail away. The inner Clyde offers ideal day cruising, whilst the more open west coast and Ireland is only a day away.

Brodick, Isle of Arran – 16 nm This is a popular destination for walkers – due to its great hills and beautiful views. The village has lots to offer including hotels, restaurants and a golf course. Brodick Castle is also well worth a visit, and has a wonderful new adventure playground.

Millport, Isle of Cumbrae – 4nm Known as the ‘Jewel of the Clyde’ – it’s a great spot for shopping, golf, fishing and cycling. Millport also has a lovely sandy beach, perfect for young children.

Troon Yacht Haven – 20 nm We may be biased, but Troon has beautiful scenery, some of the finest golf courses in the world and gourmet dining! Don’t forget to enjoy a cocktail on the terrace at Scotts overlooking the marina.

Rothesay, Isle of Bute – 6nm A pretty fishing harbour and a lively town with shops, restaurants and pubs just a few steps from the harbour. There are visitor pontoons in Rothesay harbour and nearby Port Bannatyne. Colintraive, Kyles of Bute – 14 nm A small, pretty village with a community garden – perfect for picnics – and a great hotel. Lots of opportunities for walks along the stunning shoreline. Tarbert, Loch Fyne – 22 nm A tiny but atmospheric fishing village with fantastic views from Robert the Bruce’s 14th century castle. Take a walk to the pretty shell-lined beach at the end of Pier Road.

Ardrishaig (Crinan Canal) – 32 nm A great location to enjoy a variety of outdoor of activities, and explore local areas. Ardrishaig marks the beginning of the Crinan Canal – known as ‘Britain’s most beautiful shortcut’.

Outside Catering We are a smokehouse, farm shop and restaurant situated in very attractive outbuildings of a North Ayrshire farm on the A78, south of Fairlie. The farm shop and smoke house are open 7 days a week and the restaurant 4 days of the week. In the smokehouse, we smoke our own products traditionally over cords of well-dried beechwood and we get fresh fish delivered every day from a local fishing boat. The farm shop is open every day, producing our own range of locally farmed fish and meat, cured and smoked in our smokehouse. We also stock a selection of local produce and make our very own bread. The Catch @ Fins restaurant is open Thursday-Saturday, serving lunch from 12-3 and dinner from 6-9. On a Sunday we serve lunch from 12-3. The restaurant holds up to 60 people and we aim to keep everything simple but delicious. We only use Scottish and local products and, of course, our own products from the farm shop. We hold a farmers market every last Sunday of the month from 9-2. Platters for outside catering are available. We can deliver straight to your home or boat. Firth of Clyde, KA30 8EZ

Largs Yacht Haven: Marina of the Year 2017! The family-owned marina, part of Yacht Havens Group, is located on the Firth of Clyde on the west coast of Scotland. With the stunning waters of the Clyde and the isles of Cumbrae and Arran within easy reach, Largs arguably offers the most stunning cruising ground in the UK.

With more than 700 marina berths, 24 hour staff, on water fuel, quality washrooms and a comprehensive boatyard operation, Largs has all the facilities a boat owner would need. Furthermore, with a stunning collection of waterfront eateries, shops and an active Sailing Club, the marina is at the heart of the community.

As the Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, Largs will also host the start and finish for the Trust’s Round Britain 2017 adventure which sees 100 young people in recovery from cancer taking part in a 2000 mile national sailing relay.

Largs Yacht Haven is more than just a marina. We have created a social hub for boat owners, boat enthusiasts and visitors from the local communities. With an active Sailing Club, dinghy and yacht racing scene, a sociable group of motorboaters, and a range of national and international events throughout the year, we hope we offer a service that meets the needs of all types of boaters and generations.

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Largs, Scotland

We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Largs!

Largs yacht and catamaran charter

Sailing from Largs

Largs is our favourite place to charter in Scotland because it offers brilliant sailing conditions, and is a superb jumping off point to the beautiful and tranquil islands and bays of the Clyde – you’re already some way off the beaten track so you’ll find stunning scenery practically from the word go!

There’s plenty of places to sail to and explore – the Holy Loch, Lochranza, Tarbert, Portavadie, Campbeltown, to name a few - and there are mountains, whisky distilleries, local pubs, and fine dining restaurants to find along the way. The area is non-tidal and benefits from being somewhat sheltered from the Atlantic weather - but it can still offer some interesting and challenging sailing conditions, particularly around the start or end of the season, which runs from April to October.

Must See if you're Sailing from Largs

SAILING RATING:  Intermediate / Advanced - there's interesting and changeable weather conditions, plus tides, so some experience is useful before sailing in Scotland. Beware that two members of crew are required to hold qualifications, and you will need an RYA Yachtmaster or equivalent to sail outside the Clyde area.

MUST-SEE:  Check out our full suggested itinerary below. We'd highly recommend taking in the tranquillity (and whiskey) in Lochranza, a sail around the Kyles of Bute, and a night spoiling yourselves a little in Portavadie.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER:  We have a great range of yachts available for charter (sadly no catamarans yet!) from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.

GETTING THERE:  The Marina is c. 45 minutes from Glasgow's airports. We can organise transfers for you - a 4 person taxi is c. £ 50 - 60.

WHY BOOK WITH US?  We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.

WHAT NEXT?  Use the pink box to search for yachts or catamarans with LIVE pricing & availability - if you have any other questions or requests, get in touch via Live Chat, the Contact Form , or by phone.

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices   -   largs sailing itinerary  -   wind & weather  -   marina details, 6-day sailing itinerary from largs.

Largs is a great place to sail from to find tranquillity and peace. There’s remote and secluded bays, cosy fishing villages, and unspoilt coastlines bursting with wildlife to be found. There’s the odd ferry that connects the various islands, but in the main, you’ll have large chunks of the water to yourselves.

Largs - 6 day Sailing itinerary

It’s only a six day itinerary because you’ll only get on board on Saturday afternoon, and need time you get provisions sorted and get familiar with the boat, so you likely won’t make way until the Sunday. The boat needs to be returned to Largs on Friday evening (but you can stay on it and check out on Saturday morning), which gives six days of glorious sailing.

Lamlash

Today we’ll hopefully avoid the Vikings as we beat our way south west down to Arran, or, more specifically, the cute town of Lamlash on its east coast. The wind will be hitting you square on the face as we tacking our way up the prevailing summer winds.

Lamlash is the biggest village on Arran (which gives you an idea of the size of the others) and is notable for once being the training base of the Scottish Commando unit during WWII. The ‘Holy isle’ opposite was once the home of the hermit-monk Saint Molaise, who lived in a cave here. Amongst the more unusual stories about him (apart from living alone in a cave on an island in remote Scotland) is that he died after pulling out an eye-brow hair of Saint Sillan: anyone who saw the eye-brow hair would die instantly, so Saint Molaise;s selfless actions saved the rest of humanity. No, actually.

Campbeltown

We’re headed around the coast and then hopping west to Campbeltown on the isle of Kintyre. You’ll likely have heard of the ‘Mull of Kintyre’ because ex-Beatle Paul McCartney had a big hit with a song of the same name in 1977 – he actually wrote the song when he was staying at his farm here (which he still owns today) after a messy break-up.

Campbeltown has 4,000 inhabitants, three whisky distilleries, plenty of shops and places to eat, and even a cinema, swimming pool, and its own airport. Obviously, you being sailors, you’ll know that Campbeltown was also the birthplace of Gerald Tait, who won a gold medal in Sailing at the 1908 Olympics (as part of a 10-man team in the 12-metre keelboat class).

Lochranza

The village here is reputed to have the least hours of sunshine anywhere in the UK (as it is on the north side of the mountain Goat Fell). There’s a ruined castle here to explore, where you’ll often find wild Red Deer, and nature lovers should also be able to spot Grey Seals, Otters and, if you’re lucky, Golden Eagles.

If you’re feeling energetic, you can hike up Goat Fell to get spectacular views of the whole cruising ground (you can even see Ireland some days), or if you’re not, you can head to the Arran Distillery and Visitor centre at the far end of the village, where you can see how they make their famous whisky, and give it a taste!

Portavadie

Tarbert was a location of strategic importance in these parts which is why find three castles here. It’s now most famous for selling the best seafood in Scotland (The Starfish restaurant is the best in Tarbert), including hosting a seafood festival each year. If you check you charts, you can see that the island is thinnest here – in 1098, Norwegian King Magnus Barefoot couldn’t be bothered wasting days sailing around Kintyre, so had his longboat carried across the 1 mile instead!

But we’re heading over Loch Fyne to finish the day in Portavadie, a multi-million pound marina development where you can pamper yourselves and enjoy the high life after all these days at sea. The marina is just part of a luxury development which includes brilliant toilet facilities, a fine restaurant, and a spa complex complete with an infinity pool with views back out over the water. Bliss!

Holy Loch

The ‘Burnt islands’ at the top of Bute supposedly get their name because they were the place where Viking Kings were cremated back in the day. It seems an odd place to go for a royal funeral. We’re following the Kyles as we sail in pretty much every direction, before sailing onwards and upwards to Holy Loch for the night.

Holy Loch is so named because Saint Munn arrived and set up a monastery here in the 6th century (on the site where the church currently stands today). The church also has a mausoleum for the Clan Campbell (when the Dukes of Argyll used to reign over these lands), and Elizabeth Blackwell (the first woman to get a medical degree) is also buried here. Perhaps more unbelievably, this loch was also a US Naval base during for three decades (until the end of the Cold war).

Largs

And then we’re heading back down and past Largs town centre and to Largs marina. Don’t forget to head for fuel before you return the boat back where you found her, and moor her up for one last time. Hopefully you’ve had a fantastic week, the crew have all got on, and you’ve enjoyed sampling the best that Scotland has to offer, in terms of tranquillity, sailing, and whisky!

The restaurant and bar in the marina is great, but if you haven’t yet been to Largs, then it is worth a short stroll, and Nardini’s ice cream parlour there has been serving ice-creams and fish and chips for over 80 years! Enjoy reminiscing about this holiday over a glass or two of whisky, and head to PlainSailing.com when you want to start planning your next sailing adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Scotland Sailing - Wind Conditions

The prevailing summer winds arrive from the south-west, and have travelled right over the Atlantic to greet you on your boat, and help you power yourself across the Clyde.

In spring and autumn (but to a much lesser extent in summer) then you can also get cold winds and weather systems arriving the north, so it is certainly worth checking the forecasts before you set sail.

If you sail outside of the Clyde area, then you will also need to start to think about tides, (but thankfully the area around Largs is relatively non-tidal).

Largs - Average Temperature

Marina Details - Largs Yacht Haven

Largs Yacht Haven boasts a huge marina with over 700 berths and full support services - including a warm welcome at all hours of the day from their 24 hour staff. The marina is accessible regardless of tide and dry berthing is available. The fuel and waste disposal services are excellent and free wi-fi is available. There is a free car park just across the road to all berth holders.

If you need somewhere to stay before or after your charter, then we recommend the Brisbane House Hotel and Haven House Bed and Breakfast , both located in Largs.
