What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

I have eaten at the CYC innumerable times dating back 40+ years. I'll start by acknowledging my privilege is being raised by a family that can afford such a club membership and the ability to eat out. That being said, I compare today's lunch experience to that I might get at a nicer sit-down restaurant. We had our choice of tables out on the patio which were well-frequented on a beautiful day like today. Sunny and warm but not too hot. Umbrellas over the table providing the necessary shade. Being a member, my mom was greeted warmly by staff she knew quite well. We were handed nice menus which offered several decent salads - something that makes my stomach smile. I quickly landed on what I wanted. In theory I was "buying" for belated Mother's Day - but it would go on Mom's bill. I checked out the prices for the salads and they seemed OK - but then again, none included a protein. If I wanted a protein, add $6-7 more dollars to the $14 salad charge. They did offer 1/2 sizes so I expected a large, non-protein salad when I ordered. Mom got a sandwich which came with a side. She ordered fruit but later added fries when she smelled the order brought out to the table near us. I had a Diet Coke and we both drank water. I quickly emptied my soda - and it was NEVER refilled. Big strike in my book. Thinking back, our waters were also never revisited. Oversight or is that just the rule - 1 fill unless you ask for another? Don't know. We were there for an early lunch and were in no rush. Looking back, the food took a reasonable amount of time to come out. Mom's sandwich was "small" but "very good." Most of the fruit cup was melon which she does not eat. So I did. That left 2 grapes and 2 pieces of pineapple for her. She said the fries were very good, too. My salad was fair to smaller size when compared to what I had imagined. It was good tasting but not that filling. I am definitely glad I didn't get the smaller order as that would have been tiny. We finished eating at our leisure and continued to chat. At no time was there a need for us to hurry and there always open tables available. The atmosphere was light and friendly - very casual as I saw people eating after church like we were but also dressed in shorts and t's. Mom comes here often and I was more than happy to join her as it was her pick for her day. I doubt I would revisit a place like this if it were a public restaurant. But back to where I started, I'm just grateful that I have the opportunity to eat here and with my mom.

My family has belonged to the CYC as long as I can remember. I've eaten here more times than I could ever count. I even had my wedding reception here. However, I never thought to give a YELP review before now. I ate dinner there last night with my parents (who actually are the members). We had a reservation for 6:30 but arrived early as we were hungry. We ate on the patio which is casual - which is good as I was in town visiting and didn't bring anything nicer than tennis shoes, t-shirt and shorts. The view from the patio is beautiful - looking out over the boats, harbor and lake. The weather was perfect. Multiple activities are often going on. Last night a wedding party was being held in another area of the clubhouse. The menu is always excellent - a variety of selections and always very good. Being a salad person, I was impressed to see many to pick from. I narrowed it down to 2 - and went with what was similar to a wedge salad. It had a thick slice of iceberg lettuce and included heirloom cherry tomatoes halves, crumbled bleu, applewood bacon chunks, egg and I asked for grilled chicken too. It came with a ranch dressing on the side by request - but I didn't need it at all. The flavors of the salad fixings carried the meal fine by themselves. My dad ordered the salmon, mom got a perch sandwich. But were excellent I'm told. The staff at the CYC is just amazing. They have to be to cater to the clientele that belong to the club. They are incredibly accommodating and so very sweet as the many members get up in years and become even more demanding and ornery. I so appreciate their treatment of the patrons and thank them with all my heart. SO - I will definitely be eating here again. And I look forward to it.

Tucked into a protected cove on the southern coast of Lake Erie, you will find this throwback from summer days of yesteryear. You can totally imagine yourself on the outdoor deck of the club 30, 40, even 50 years ago. This historic club is quaint if not slightly weather worn. The grounds are surrounded by high cliffs and tall trees. The staff is friendly and the drinks are stiff. Sunset overlooking the lake is a sight to be seen. I love that during the summer the sailing camps are filled with young kids criss-crossing the narrow channel. You certainly need to have years of experience to navigate your boats from the docks out to the lake. Not for the novice or tipsy driver as there are potential challenges at every turn. You have a mix of pampered privileged teeny boppers and silver haired early birds congregating in the clubhouse in the early evening. I imagine it's more of a family affair during the day by the pool. Slightly posh and yet not too stuffy. I still however, feel compelled to behave as though my nana is present at all times. Such is the experience at most yachting establishments. Inappropriate behavior is certain to be frowned upon. The hot popcorn machine is a big hit with all the afternoon revelers. I myself can't get beyond the idea of too many unwashed hands in the mix. wah wah Being such a lovely club it's sad to admit that the restrooms are in need of a facelift. Overall, my friends and I enjoyed our time on Lake Erie, ate way too much fresh fish, and will certainly be back for more next summer.

Nice yacht club pool. Clean and safe and adequate poolside service. Bathrooms aren't serviced enough as they are often without toilet paper.

First off, Security too tight. I understand that the Yacht Club is private but, I told the tall fat security guard that I was a guest of a friend that was a member. Long story short my friend came to talk to the guard and I got in. Second, children around the Yacht Club are too wild. Walking around the boats I ran into a group of young adults that were very rude. All in all my experience at the yacht club was sub par at best.

Great staff, family friendly atmosphere and focus. This is the place to be for families with small children looking to get into boating and sailing.

Not sure what to expect when I got here. Food and service was great! I wish I could go back but I am not a member.

BOATING (RECREATIONAL)

BOATING (RECREATIONAL). Recreational boating, more specifically yachting, became an organized sport in Cleveland in 1878 when GEO. GARDNER founded the Cleveland Yachting Assn., subsequently known as the CLEVELAND YACHT CLUB . Gardner, later elected mayor of Cleveland, is often referred to as the "Father of Yachting"' in Cleveland. In the summer of 1884, Gardner and other members of the Cleveland Yacht Club, at the invitation of Henry Gerlach, sailed to Put-in-Bay aboard Gerlach's sloop, Lulu. There were other yacht clubs on Lake Erie, and it was Gardner's idea that Put-in-Bay would be a perfect site for a major regatta involving the other clubs on the lake. On 17 Jan. 1885, he called a meeting in Cleveland to form an association of clubs, and from this meeting the Inter-Lake Yachting Assn. was born. The purpose of I-LYA was to foster camaraderie among Great Lakes yachtsmen and to adopt rules of measurement and handicaps to allow a variety of boats to compete in the regattas. The first official regatta was in Aug. 1894, at Put-in-Bay. It became the major regatta of I-LYA, and in the 1990s, known as "Bay Week," it extended through the first week of August.

Sailing yachts were not the only vessels used in the early days of racing competition. Naphtha-powered launches and steam-powered yachts competed in 1896. As more clubs, more types of boats, and 3 Great Lakes became involved, as well as some Canadian clubs, the creation of a continental governing body became necessary. Ernest W. Radder of the Cleveland Yacht Club chaired a committee that initially represented 109 yacht clubs and established the North American Racing Union, which evolved into the U.S. Yacht Racing Union. The complexity of current yachting rules springs from this early association. The Cleveland Yacht Club initiated a major race in 1901, named for its founder, Geo. Gardner. The Gardner Bowl was run on the 4th of July. In 1904 the first powerboat races were held on Lake Erie, and in 1908 the world record for speed on water was established at 28 mph. News of this event was relayed by carrier pigeons to eagerly awaiting enthusiasts in Cleveland, Sandusky, and Toledo. In 1914 another prominent Clevelander, ALEXANDER WINTON , had his name attached to the Winton Cup race. The longest race established by the CYC was the F. W. Roberts Memorial Trophy, a 180 mi. roundtrip between Rocky River and Port Stanley, Ontario. The most popular Cleveland-area regatta has been the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club's Falcon Cup, a 34 mi. race from Rocky River to Mentor. Established in 1938 by Richard Bostwick, it is run in cooperation with the Cleveland Yacht Club.

Two types of boaters emerged in the post-World War II era: powerboaters and sailors. With the development of the outboard motor and mass-production technology, powerboats became the foundation of the boating industry by a margin of 10:1. Those new to boating chose power over sail for a variety of reasons. The powerboat appeared to be an extension of the automobile, and the perception of simplicity of operation, as well as speed, versatility, and lower cost, combined to make the powerboat attractive to a wide variety of consumers. Sailing, on the other hand, had an elitist image and was perceived as complex, expensive, and restrictive. An important adjunct to recreational boating is sport fishing, which flourished in the postwar period. Sport fishing was organized by the Lake Erie Sport Fishermen, who in the early 1970s stopped the commercial harvest of walleye pike, and banned gill nets from Ohio waters. Sport fishing in the central basin of Lake Erie dramatically improved from its bleak days of the 1950s, when many had proclaimed the lake "dead." Through the efforts of the Ohio Sea Grant program, operating as a cooperative extension service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, based at Ohio State Univ., the first artificial reefs were constructed offshore from Lakewood and Edgewater parks (see also FISHING INDUSTRY ).

With the introduction of mass-market boating, legal, political, and insurance-related issues began to surface. In 1946 the Greater Cleveland Boating Assn. was established by Commodore W. Weir of the Forest City Yacht Club to "pressure city, state, and federal governments" to advance water recreation. Safe operation of boats is the major goal of the association, and it also serves as an effective lobby for its 30 affiliated clubs and 50,000 individual boat owners. In this context, the GCBA was instrumental in repealing the state property tax on boats and further achieved the inclusion of a .005% gasoline tax to be channeled to the state's Waterway & Safety Fund, for the construction and maintenance of boating facilities. Since the majority of boaters in the Cleveland area trailer their craft, launch ramps and parking lots have been a major concern of the organization. In 1952 40,000 signatures were gathered and presented to Mayor Anthony Celebrezze seeking small-boat launching facilities for the Cleveland area. The mayor created the Dept. of Port Control, naming Wm. Rogers as the first director. The city established 5 public access ramp areas at Wildwood Park, GORDON PARK , E. 55th St., EDGEWATER PARK , and Donald Gray Gardens, of which the first 4 remained in existence in 1993. In 1956 the Lake Erie Marine Trades Assn. was established in Cleveland. The public role of this association has been the organization of various boat shows. However, its 100 members have also been involved in legal, political, promotional, and lobbying activities that affect the boating public.

As more consumers became involved in boating, financial institutions sought registration and titling of boats. In 1960, through the combined efforts of the banking community and LEMTA, the State of Ohio responded by requiring the registration of all watercraft and the establishment of a waterway safety fund. In 1986 there were over 30,000 boats registered in Cuyahoga County. The appearance of private marinas and yacht clubs catered to a segment of the boating public that could afford such facilities. Historically, the yacht club has been associated with old-line monied elites. Social, economic, and vocational stratification were still factors in some of the clubs in the 1990s. The entrance requirements for the Cleveland Yacht Club are illustrative. A prospective member of the CYC must be proposed by a senior member, sponsored by another senior member, and have references from 3 other members. This selection process, plus the payment of a $4,800 initiation fee and monthly dues of $142, qualifies one for membership. Dock space requires additional fees. In 1993 there was a 1-year waiting period for dockage. Until 1986 none of the yacht clubs or their affiliate, the I-LYA, had a woman or black man as a commodore; in that year Mrs. Davida Steinbrink was elected commodore of the Edgewater Yacht Club.

As the number of recreational boaters grew, safe operation became a major issue. The Coast Guard assumed the role of monitoring and responding to boaters in distress. The Boating Safety Div. of the 9th Coast Guard Dist. in Cleveland maintained stations at Cleveland, Marblehead, Ashtabula, Fairport, and Lorain; over 1,200 people were assisted every year by just the Cleveland station. Boating safety regulations grew in response to changing conditions in the industry and attitudes of the public. The USCG is assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary—a civilian volunteer, nonmilitary organization. The auxiliary conducts courtesy marine examinations and safe-boating courses and supports the Coast Guard in rescue and assistance missions. In the 1980s, Cleveland-area boaters were aided by a major renovation of the lakefront and the growth of recreational activity in the FLATS . The "Parade of Lights," organized by LEMTA for the annual Flats Fest, attracts the participation of 60 vessels. Cleveland Race Week, co-hosted in July by the Edgewater and Lakeside Yacht Clubs, bills itself as the largest freshwater sail regatta in the U.S., with 300 sail. The ongoing efforts of Cleveland-area yacht clubs to improve facilities, the revitalization of Lake Erie, and the establishment of the CLEVELAND AIR SHOW and the BUDWEISER CLEVELAND 500 on the lakefront have served to make the "North Coast" into a major water recreational area with broad benefits for area boaters.

Smooth sailing: Freedom Boat Club allows the joys of owning a boat, without the hassle

Freedom Boat Club Lake Erie is a multinational, members-only boat club that provides an innovative alternative to boat ownership.

Summer has arrived and it is easy to imagine cruising around Lake Erie on a sunny day. The wind sweeps through your hair as the hull of your boat slices effortlessly through the waves. Your family and friends are all with you, smiling and laughing, anticipating the fun that lies ahead.

Now, imagine being able to do this any time you want with anyone you want, without any of the responsibilities that come with owning a boat. If this sounds like something that interests you, look no further than Freedom Boat Club Lake Erie .

cleveland yachting club membership fees

There are three locations in Northeast Ohio—one at Channel Park Marina, one at Emerald Necklace Marina in Lakewood, and one at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club in Mentor.

All three are experiencing unprecedented expansion. In 2021 membership drastically increased in over its initial opening in 2019, says to Chris Christen, director of operations for Freedom Boat Club Lake Erie, “We're blowing up,” he says. “We're over 350 members now [in Cleveland], so we've doubled.”

With a one-time initiation fee followed by monthly dues, members get unlimited access to any of the boats at their individual membership location. At the Cleveland clubs, members get access to a total of 18 boats that are built for all types of watersports.

The clubs has center console boats that are built for fishing, bowriders built for tubing and waterskiing, and pontoons for larger parties. Christen notes that the versatility of their fleet gives members more options for aquatic activities than boat ownership.

“One benefit of Freedom Boat Club is that it’s for people who have a lot of different demands on their boating lifestyle,” Christen says. “Lets say dad and mom liked to go fishing, right? And then on the weekends, the kids, they don't want to go fishing. They want to go tubing. So we'll have a center console where they can go out and go fishing, and we have bowriders for tubing.”

cleveland yachting club membership fees

The membership fees are surprisingly low compared to the costs of purchasing and maintaining a boat, argues Christen. Initiation costs are between $4,000 and $9,000, depending on the location, and monthly costs range from $300 to $370 per month, depending on the type of membership.

Members have the option of choosing a slightly cheaper, Monday-through-Friday plan or a plan that covers seven days a week of boating.

Additionally, members can transfer to another location at any time. In fact, transferring a membership to another location can be easier and more cost effective than moving locations while owning a boat, as Christen explains.

“That's a really nice part about it—with Freedom Boat Club, you just pay $500 to transfer your membership, and you're boating again with boats compliant to that area,” he explains. “In that same situation, say you bought a boat for Lake Erie, and you're going to live down near the Florida Keys. Well, that [Lake Erie] boat is not going to work down there. Maybe it doesn't have systems compliant with salt water. So, then you’ve got to sell that boat. You might break even, but in this economy you never know.”

All members are required to take a written and on-the-water safety training course. The course length varies depending on the experience of the boater, but regardless all members have access to unlimited one-on-one training with certified captains.

“We go over all the safety sequences, everything that they need to know when they're out there on the water to make sure that they are confident when they get on the boat,” explains Christen. “We have U.S. Coast Guard-certified captains while they go out—we do not cut corners on boats, and we do not cut corners on safety.”

Christen says he takes pride in knowing that throughout these unprecedented times, Freedom gives members the opportunity to have fun in a safe, stress-free environment.

“Its just a warming feeling to know that I'm able to impact families and really get something going out there, especially right now with the current times and all the stuff going on in the world,” he says. “Boating is a great way to get out there and just get away from it all.”

For those who are interested in Freedom Boat Club’s membership options, you can find the link to the website here or visit any of their locations for more information.

To instill a life-long respect, passion, and love for boating among CYC youth through the premier youth day camp in the country.  Sail camp is the cornerstone of a youth development program that results in competent boaters who pursue their individual interests to the fullest.

From the moment campers set foot on the island, they will be inspired to learn about boating and all that it has to offer.  They will look forward to a day that is fun, instructional, organized, and purposeful in developing boating skills, awareness, respect, confidence, and enjoyment.  Their day will be spent on the water, in the pool, and on the island with structured activities that meet the goals of the camp.  Their day will be full of camaraderie and individual accomplishment.  At the end of each day, they will leave the island reluctantly and tired, knowing that each is a better boater for the day just spent.  As campers age out of camp, their camp experience will manifest itself in a continued desire to be on and around the water.
