A power skiff for simple cruising

From Issue   Small Boats Annual 2008

I n the 1950s, Howard Chapelle drew an 18′ sharpie power skiff. He called her Campskiff. She was designed for the low-powered 5–10-hp outboard motors of the day and was intended to take her crew into the backwaters and creeks of the Eastern estuaries. For her hull planking, Chapelle called for 1⁄2″ cedar or mahogany. The bottom was planked with the same material, but was a full 7⁄ 8″ thick. For ward, the lines drawings show a full hull and a stem that just settles in at the waterline. Her proportions are nearly perfect.

Some 30 years later, designer Karl Stambaugh revisited the design, and the resulting Redwing captured the intent and all of the grace of the earlier sharpie. A close study of the two boats shows some well-thought-out improvements. With a LOA of 18′ 6″ and a beam of 6′ 6″, Redwing is bigger than Campskiff. She also has more freeboard and a finer entry. From any angle Redwing’s sheer is lovely, which is no easy feat for a flat-bottomed skiff. The house, motor well, and gracefully curved coaming complement the hull shape and add greatly to the boat’s appeal and function. The designer points out that Redwing is a light boat, 850 lbs, but she will carry heavy loads. With a motor, fuel, and batteries aft in the well and crew sprawled out in the cockpit, it will be necessary to place ballast forward, maybe several hundred pounds of it, depending on what gear is aboard, in order to trim the hull. The bottom of the stem should ride just below the waterline when the boat is at rest. Thus trimmed, handling in tight quarters even with a breeze up should be fine.

Redwing

Karl Stambaugh’s REDWING 18 is a plywood boat based on a Howard Chapelle design of traditional construction. Stambaugh designed his version “to make her easier to build while keeping the traditional appearance of the Chapelle design.”

Stambaugh’s Redwing is built of plywood. The first boats to this design were assembled “glue-and-screw” fashion; a “stitch-and-glue” version was later drawn. If you build stitch-and-glue, you might find the relatively quick assembly time and the bombproof filleted joints are worth the hassle of working with all that epoxy and filler. Once the hull is finished, the lion’s share of the remaining work is “traditional” plywood boat building. It’s fun stuff.

Marine-grade okoume is a near-perfect material for this type of hull. The boat’s sides are built of 12mm plywood and the bottom is created from two layers of the same material. The outside is sheathed in ’glass set in epoxy, and the results are strong and tight—just the thing needed for a cruiser that might live on a trailer. The side planks come together at a beefy, solid-wood stem. The house and deck, like the hull, are built from 12mm plywood. The deck is sheathed with Dynel cloth set in epoxy, but the weave is not filled. This makes for a strong, watertight finish that mimics the appearance of a canvas deck but requires little maintenance; and it won’t leak. The cockpit has wide seats curved to match the hull’s shape. These, coupled with high coamings, offer great comfort and space to spread out and relax while underway or tucked in for the night.

red wing sailboat

Redwing might be the ultimate gunkholer. She’s designed for exploring thin and narrow waterways—places too tight for a sailboat to tack. At the end of the day, she provides ample camp-style accommodations.

Stambaugh has worked up a simple, electric propulsion system for Redwing. A small, stock 2-hp electric motor, the kind designed to be bolted to a cavitation plate, is mounted in the motorwell and driven by batteries stored forward, under the berth. With the exception of the custom-fabricated mounting bracket for the motor, all the components are off-the-shelf items. As configured, the range is about 40 miles at a leisurely 3 knots, which is a perfect speed for exploring creeks, small inland lakes, or quiet backwaters.

Most builders will probably choose to power Redwing with an outboard motor nestled in the sound-insulated motorwell. A 9.9 four-stroke is ideal, but a smaller engine will serve. One of the advantages of the 10-hp engine is that most come with electric start and a small trickle charge alternator. Steering harnesses that work with these engines are stock items, a real plus for the builder. At about two-thirds throttle, Redwing will move quietly though the water at 6+ knots and burn a half gallon of fuel per hour. On a boat as uncomplicated as Redwing, I’d keep the systems simple. A well-maintained outboard, one battery, running lights, and (just in case) an electric bilge pump are about all the complication Redwing or her crew should have to endure.

red wing sailboat

Designer Stambaugh estimates the materials cost for a Redwing 18 at about $5,000 (not including power). This figure assumes high-quality materials and finish.

Another place to avoid complication is with the cabin layout. There is a lot of room to get creative with the arrangements on an 18′ boat, but on Redwing there is room for a full-sized and comfortable V-berth, a head tucked under a seat, a fair-sized galley flat, and plenty of organized storage. Stambaugh has drawn a hard dodger for Redwing that blends in perfectly. It extends over the companionway and runs aft to the motorwell, fully sheltering the cockpit from rain and sun, without blocking the helmsman’s view or stifling the breeze while at anchor. As drawn, this awning complements the boat nicely, turns the cockpit into a living space, and can be removed easily and stored ashore if it’s not needed.

I t’s the contemplated voyages in Redwing that really capture my imagination. Though designed for sheltered waters, she is capable of dealing with moderate wind and chop. Watch the weather and plan carefully and, as with any boat, be aware of her limitations. That said, I have seen Redwings along the coast of the Carolinas and on Georgia’s south coast, the Sacramento River Delta, and on Chesapeake Bay. I know of one being built in southern Maine, and I’ve seen one on Lake Michigan—trailered in from some landlocked state. The possibilities along the Florida coast alone seem limitless. Thanks in part to their shallow draft of 1′ 0″, these boats can and do get around.

red wing sailboat

The motor lives in an enclosed box, and is nearly silent. Cruising speed is about 6-9 knots, depending on choice of power.

Suitable cruising grounds abound, and if they lie far from home, a midsize car has plenty of muscle to get the boat, her gear, and her crew to the water. Redwing offers plenty of adventure in a manageable package. Keep the gear simple: a stove that can be used below on the galley flat or moved to a cockpit seat, a dishpan for a sink, and a cooler make a fine galley. I think I’d replace the V-berths with a large berth flat, which offers more sprawling room. When such a flat is outfitted with fold-up seat backs, it provides comfortable seating below. If you cruise in cool environments, there is room for a small wood heater to chase away any dampness and to boil the morning coffee. For adequate ventilation, there should be at least four opening ports in the cabin sides. Two small bronze opening ports mounted in the forward end of the house might also be welcome in warmer climates.

red wing sailboat

At only 850 lbs, Redwing is of an ideal weight to tow behind an average car. But she’s also capacious, and will carry a couple and their gear on an expedition.

Redwing works in so many ways. She is not a big boat, but she does offer the trailer-bound boater a literal (and littoral) world of options. She is economical to build and almost miserly in her fuel consumption. She is comfortable in a simple, uncomplicated way and easy to maintain. Owning a boat like Redwing would, I think, prove to be a joy and not a burden.

red wing sailboat

Plans for Redwing 18 include nine sheets, and the construction specifications include both glue-and-screw and stitch-and-glue. A full-sized frame plan is also available.

Seems like the Redwing would make a perfectly fine small sailing craft; with the addition of a centerboard, and a mast step. Nice gaff or marconi rig with a correctly size jib. Perfect pocket cruiser? No?

Right, I had exactly the same thoughts. Would be a fine motor sailor.

As a life long sailor, these are the kinds of powerboats that appeal to me. No need to go fast, just a steady nice-and-easy, stately manner. I think if I were to build one, I would add a small folding windshield to the cabin top, there are times when blocking the breeze needs to be done.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds

Cam Talbot eager to show Red Wings he’s still a starting goalie

T he Detroit Red Wings don’t know what to expect from Ville Husso, who hasn’t been the same since the 2023 trade deadline due to injuries and ineffectiveness and played only nine minutes over the final four months of last season.

That’s why they signed 11-year veteran Cam Talbot on Monday.

Talbot turns 37 on Friday but still considers himself a starting goaltender who can handle a heavy workload.

“Absolutely,” Talbot, who signed for two years at an average annual value of $2.5 million, said. “That’s one of the reasons why I chose to sign here. There’s going to be competition no matter what between three or four of us. I feel healthy and good even at my age. I played 54 games last year, made an All-Star appearance. I still feel like I got a lot to give. That’s one of the biggest reasons why I wanted a two-year deal to come in and try to help a team win and compete for starts.”

Talbot went 27-20-6 for the Los Angeles Kings, with a 2.48 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. He wasn’t sharp in the first-round playoff series against Edmonton, allowing 16 goals in the first three games (1-2) before being replaced by David Rittich, who lost the next two resulting in the team’s quick exit.

The Kings traded for Darcy Kuemper and moved on from Talbot, who was surprised the Red Wings called because they have Husso and Alex Lyon, who played 44 games, a heavier workload than he was accustomed.

“That internal competition is good for everyone,” Talbot said. “It pushes us. It pushes the goalie coaches to try to make us better. But it gives the team confidence in both of the guys that are in there. And when they see us battling hard for that spot, they’re going to want to play that much harder for us in front of us.”

He said having a good relationship and rapport with his fellow goalies is vital.

“You don’t want any kind of animosity in the dressing room,” Talbot said. “That’s never been part of me, and I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of good goalie partners that feel the same way. You just kind of come in, you know it’s going to be a competition, but at the same time, the team always comes first. I’m looking forward to working with them, with Ville, Alex, and Jack (Campbell) and whoever else is going to be in the mix.”

The Red Wings also signed Campbell to a one-year deal after Edmonton bought out the final three years of his contract. He’s expected to team up with top prospect Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids.

Detroit is Talbot’s eighth NHL team, his seventh since 2018-19.

“You never really fully get used to (moving), especially with a young family now,” Talbot said. “Taking the kids out of school and moving them all the time, having to leave their friends, that’s the hardest part for me. It’s easy, the hockey part. You can kind of plug in and play. Guys always integrate you into the team.

“But it’s the family factor at this point, which, getting the second year on this deal was huge and hopefully not having to move them again next summer. At my age, you have to start thinking about that and what’s best for my family as well. My kids have been troopers, but hopefully I’ve found a spot for a couple of years, and we’ll be able to kind of settle down a little bit.”

This Red Wing Boat Has A Story To Tell

Red Wing Marine Museum

RED WING — Mike Wilson had known about the Red Wing Boat Manufacturing Co. launch in Florida for more than 20 years. He suspected it was the last Red Wing boat in existence, and hoped that someday, he would be able to put it in his Red Wing Marine Museum, but the boat wasn’t for sale.

Then, this summer, Wilson’s phone rang. The boat’s owner, Jim Leroy, was on the line. His wife had died last March. He had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He told Wilson that the boat belonged in the Red Wing Marine Museum.

“The boat had been in his family for 47 years,” Wilson said. “He had the boat restored in 1976 and brought back to the condition it is in today. He had it in several boat shows in Florida.”

Wilson told Leroy that the museum could not afford the price of the boat, but after a short conversation, they found a price that worked, and Wilson bought the boat. He and his brother drove to Florida in late September, prepared the boat for travel, and drove it to Red Wing.

“It was a sad day,” Wilson said. “When we pulled this thing out of his front yard, that was not a good thing. It was hard on him When we got home, I parked the boat in front of the museum, took a picture, and sent it to him with a note that we made it home. He was excited that it got here.”

After 115 years of hauling fishermen to prime sites and carrying family members on afternoon excursions, the Red Wing launch had come home.

“This boat was built in Red Wing in 1904 down on the levee,” said Wilson. “It is a 20-foot launch with a 6-horse Red Wing motor. The boat was shipped to a fishing camp in upper Michigan, and it was used there for pulling fishermen and their canoes out onto the lake.”

Wilson said the resort owners would take the fishermen out onto Cisco Lake near the border between Wisconsin and Michigan. They would come back at the end of the day to take the fishermen back to the resort. Eventually the resort was sold, and the boat was owned by two other parties before Leroy bought the boat, restored it, and moved it to Eustis, Fla., near Orlando.

Red Wing Boat Manufacturing Co. started making boats and motors in Red Wing in 1902. The motors were so popular that in 1910, owners changed the name to the Red Wing Motor Co. and became so busy building motors that they stopped building boats in 1916. They continued to build motors, which sold throughout the world, until the 1960s.

“We don’t know of any other Red Wing boats in existence,” Wilson said. “When they used these launches on the lakes, they would work them until there was nothing left of them. Then they would either burn them or sink them. Luckily this one survived, and with the engine, too. This is an extremely rare piece.”

Red Wing resident Harry Munson, who collected and restored the 33 motors that form the central collection for the Red Wing Marine Museum, was featured in a boating magazine article in the 1990s. Leroy read about Munson restoring Red Wing motors and contacted him about the Red Wing boat.

“Jim saw that article and got ahold of me,” Munson said. “Nobody had ever heard that there was an existing Red Wing boat. Several of us flew down there in 1998, and Jim took us out for a ride in the boat.”

Munson explained that the boat required two people to operate it. The steering wheel was in the bow and was connected to the rudder by cables that ran the length of the boat. A second person had to sit by the motor and operate it.

“This is a direct drive motor, so there is no transmission,” Wilson explained. “In order to go from forward to reverse, you had to slow the motor down, move a lever, and the motor would go into reverse.”

Twenty years of patience paid off for Wilson and the Red Wing Marine Museum. Even though he intends to display the boat in the museum, Wilson has one problem.

“We have to dismantle part of the entryway to get it through the door,” Wilson said. “We didn’t make the doors wide enough to get a boat through.”

Bringing the boat back to Red Wing and the museum is important to Wilson, because “It is a nice piece of Red Wing history. This is the home run.”

The Detroit Red Wings bolstered their goaltending depth Monday by signing 11-year NHL veteran Cam Talbot to a two-year deal worth $2.5 million per season.

Talbot, 36, is coming off a solid season with the Los Angeles Kings, going 27-20-6 with a 2.45 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. He struggled in the first-round playoff series vs. Edmonton, however, appearing in three games and posting a 5.30 GAA and .861 save percentage.

Could anyone out there give me a bit of feedback on the offshore posibilities of the Redwing.30 . They look like the design was a a bit influenced by Alberg. I know they where designed by CC and built By Hinterholler. I sail a CC29MII and have sailed Sharks. I have a chance at a very low priced Redwing. Hull is in great shape decks need recoring. I am handy with repairs but do not want to wast time on this boat if it is not capable of an Atlantic crossing. I am willing to prepare the boat over the next 4 years as I have a great boat to sail right now. Any thoughts?? Thanks

Pretty boats.... Pegasus6 I've always been nervous about the 'hockey stick' rudder, but it may be fine. Not so "Alberg"y, really, except for the wooden cockpit coamings.

I would agree it is a little Alberg-ish, other than the keel and rudder configuration. I would guess that design would be slow and have a miserable motion in the type of seas you would encounter crossing 'the Stream'.

I expect the boat is capable of an ocean crossing, but it would seem a poor choice when you are in effect starting from scratch. While it may get you there, the experience may be a lot less pleasant than otherwise.

While it might be capable of crossing an ocean, I wouldn't pick it as my first choice for doing so. It would require a lot of modification to be considered safe for an ocean crossing. For instance, the cockpit doesn't have a proper bridgedeck and the cockpit drains are rather small for the volume of cockpit that the boat has. Also, the unsupported rudder is probably not a great choice, especially given the age of the boat. She's also got a very short waterline for a 30' boat... only 21' 9"—in fact, my 28' boat has a much longer waterline at 26' 4"... The Contessa 26, similar to Tania Aebi's Varuna has a 21' waterline... IMHO, long overhangs, while looking quite graceful, are a risk in heavy weather, since they give the seas a lever arm to push the boat around with... Recoring the deck is a fairly massive undertaking, as it generally requires removing all of the deck hardware and re-bedding it all. It is a fairly expensive project, and you'd likely have to replace the standing rigging at the same time, as well as repair the compression post or bulkhead on the interior of the boat. I'd point out that some boats with serious structural problems, and this boat qualifies as one, can have a negative value—in that the repairs to bring the boat to seaworthiness will cost more than the boat is worth. Given the serious deck problems, I would guess that there are other major issues with the boat that you don't know about.

National Redwing Dinghy Association

"Those who know and understand Redwings are inspired by their seaworthiness. They are outstandingly brave little boats, from which we can learn that the sea is to sail upon… in a boat in which we can enjoy the sea in all its moods and not fear it.. even in a hat-ful of wind." Uffa Fox

For Sale & Wanted

For those looking to buy a Redwing, you will notice that the boats rarely, if ever arrive for sale in the usual places. However, if you are looking to get into the fleet, boats can always be ‘found’ and sold to prospective sailors, several of us hoard them to use, share or restore over time but would rather they were in use immediately.

Here we will put together a list of boats or parts that are actively for sale. If what you are looking for is not available, do get in touch with the association – we can be very resourceful. If you have something ‘Redwing’ for sale or wanted, contact us and we will endeavour to get it listed.

R155 ‘Tern’ Is an S.G. Ellis built boat from the Isles of Scilly £100

For sale ‘Tern’ R155. Details provided by her current owner: ‘The sails are about 30 years old so are only good for general sailing but they are in reasonable condition with no tear’.  I’ve taken the fittings off due to starting on the woodwork but I recon the sheets/cleats etc. are also about 30 years old.   They are not original but will need replacing if the boat is to be raced seriously.   The combi trailer was new about 12 years ago and has been hardly used and is capable of delivering the boat to any new owner.  It’ a metal mast but all halyards will need replacing

I’d like her to go to a good home so am only asking for a nominal £100.’

R241 Rocky III for sale – Race spec with a race win at the 2022 championship and inlands.

red wing sailboat

Well known quick boat with a great history and now fully updated. As new Sail shapes plus a good set of Ullmans with a spare superspars rig. Decent Mersey 250 combi. Old cover. £6k complete or £5k without the new sails.

R249 Lyonesse for sale – Championship Winner 2018, Race wins at the 2022 championship. £5000

red wing sailboat

Built by Stephen Beresford of the good wood boat company and launched in 2009. Only used for a small handful of races until I bought her in 2016. Raced regularly until 2019 and rarely since. Dry stored until 2016 and over the winter until 2019 and again for most of the time since.

Proven quick boat with history. Inland Championship winner 2018, National Championship winner 2018, 3rd overall in 2022 National Championships with 2 race wins. Boat is fully set up with latest rigging tweaks, all measurements and tuning information available. I hold the current measurement certificate.

Comes with: new unused unwrapped superspars mast and rigging pack. Usable but not perfect spare mast as used in the 2022 championships. Boom was new 2017, carbon fly away pole 2017, new sheets and control lines 2018 with carbon extension, new running rigging in spare mast 2019, good combi trolley/trailer as supplied original with boat, excellent matching over and under covers, 2 suits of sails: Ullman “pinkies“ very good main, jib still ok for non championship event racing, mixed set of reasonable Ullman main and worn Mac jib used for cruising/training.

Hull is Khaya planked and is in excellent condition. Varnish is in good condition and was done with epifanes single pack varnish. Underside finished with 1500 grit paper and rubbing compound. Inside is not the tidiest but is well protected. Ribs and lands have been epoxied – stiff and doesn’t leak. Some wear marks from ropes on the thwarts as usual but otherwise fully coated and protected. Doesn’t leak.

Additionally: I also have a championship quality suit of Sail Shape sails used for 3 national championships only (£800), and a never used set of Sail Shape Sails, only unrolled once as part of a class measuring exercise (£1000). I also have a new and never dipped aluminium launching trolley made for Lyonesse (£400). Would prefer to give the buyer of the boat the option to buy these before selling separately.

Genuine reason for sale – I now have a job that contracts me not to take holiday in August so can no longer make our National Championships.

Contact Eric Evans on 07472281951. Viewing available in North Devon, delivery possible.

R154 Chaffinch for sale – Race spec, fast boat, ready to go – £3500 ono

Wanted – Items to help complete some classic Redwing restorations.

Peter has been on a real mission to restore several Redwings in classic mode for use locally in North Devon. It is a great project and hugely worthy of our support to help bring Redwinging joy to sailors in North Devon while helping to re-building our fleet and getting the boats back on the water.

He has sourced a wooden mast for a 1970’s restoration which is almost complete, but needs at least one more if not two for the others he is restoring next. He is also in need of two 15″ Saylon black nylon jib sheet lead track’s or Tufnol equivalents.

If you can help, please Peter by e-mail at [email protected]

Detroit Red Wings fans satisfied with 'inexpensive' Cam Talbot signing in goal

The Detroit Red Wings have added a goalie.

Veteran journeyman goaltender Cam Talbot agreed to a two-year deal worth $2.5 million annually with the Red Wings on the first day of 2024 NHL free agency .

Talbot is an 11-year veteran with experience for seven different teams, including the Los Angeles Kings in the 2023-24 season. He appeared in 54 games last season, finishing with a 27-20-6 record and three shutouts. He had a .913 save percentage and allowed an average of 2.5 goals against per game, just below his career average of 2.63.

More: Detroit Red Wings will host home opener vs. Penguins for 2024-25 season

Talbot will be a solid option at goalie for the Wings, who still have two goalies, Alex Lyon and Ville Husso, on the NHL roster under contract for next season. Husso, the highest-paid goalie on the roster with a $4.75 million annual average on his contract, said he expects to be healthy for 2024-25 after only making 19 appearances last year due to injury and Lyon is set to make $900,000 next year. It remains to be seen if Talbot's signing affects the others' status.

Despite his age (he turns 37 on Friday), Wings fans were happy to add Talbot to strengthen the options in net on the roster next year at a reasonable price.

Cam Talbot is a career .913 goalie who put up a .913 last season, albeit on a better team. 2.5 million is the going rate for a decent back up so if he’s anything close to his career average this is a great deal and if he’s not he’s still likely a solid back up. — Brad Krysko WWP 🇺🇦 (@BradKrysko) July 1, 2024
I’m gonna be completely honest. I didn’t know Cam Talbot was still in the show — blashdril (@blashdril) July 1, 2024
Yzerman said he didn't like idea of carrying 3 goalies again. So with Talbot signing be interesting to see what plan here is for Husso/Lyon. — Sean Shapiro (@seanshapiro) July 1, 2024
Although not a Vezina candidate, the 2 year contract for Cam Talbot is an inexpensive upgrade in goal. Save percentage was .913 last season. — michael stone (@stoney16) July 1, 2024

Red Wings make four additions in free agency, re-sign Christian Fischer

red wing sailboat

Detroit — The Red Wings made moves in free agency Monday, though none are likely to excite Wings fans.

That move, the one that made fans pump their fists, occurred the night before.

The Wings agreed to terms Monday with defensemen Erik Gustafsson on a two-year contract worth $4 million ($2 million annual average value) and William Lagesson on a one-year contract worth $775,000) and signed goaltenders Cam Talbot to a two-year contract worth $5 million ($2.5 million AAV) and Jack Campbell, a Port Huron native, to a one-year deal for $775,000.

Lagesson and Campbell are likely headed to minor league affiliate Grand Rapids for organizational depth.

They also re-signed defensive forward Christian Fischer to a one-year contract for $1.125 million.

The Wings made their biggest move thus far when they re-signed forward Patrick Kane late Sunday night (one-year, $4 million base, $2.5 bonus incentives), successfully keeping their top priority.

General manager Steve Yzerman didn't meet with the media Monday but is likely to talk in the next day or two at the Wings' development camp.

The Wings' new players are scheduled to talk with reporters Tuesday.

There was rampant speculation since Saturday of the Wings possibly acquiring defenseman Jacob Trouba, a Rochester Hills native and former Michigan star who the New York Rangers are looking to unload for salary cap relief (Trouba has two years left, at an $8 million AAV). The Rangers would reportedly pay approximately $2.5 million per season of the contract.

Trouba's contract moved from a no-trade clause shifted Monday to a 15-team no-trade clause. But the day ended with Trouba still on the Rangers, and Rangers GM Chris Drury hazy about Trouba's future.

"Jacob knows what I think of him as a person and a player, and I'm going to keep any private conversation with him or his agent private," Drury told New York reporters. "We're always looking to move the team forward and be the best team we possibly can be. I'm not going to go through player by player who's going to be here, who's not going to be here. We're just trying to do the best we can in the offseason and put our best foot forward come training camp."

Here are the players the Wings retained or signed Monday:

▶ Fischer, 27, had 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in 79 games with the Wings and is coming off a one-year, $1.125 million deal (identical to what he signed for this season). Fischer is valued for his versatility, penalty killing and energy in a checking role.

The line of Andrew Copp centering Michael Rasmussen and Fischer was one of the Wings' most effective late in the season, forechecking and frustrating opponents with their energy and physical play.

A favorite in the locker room, the Wings felt keeping Fischer was a good, efficient bet on a short-term contract.

▶ Gustafsson, 32, spent last season ironically with the Rangers, where he had six goals with 25 assists in 76 games with a plus-3 rating. Gustafsson was a 2012 fourth-round pick of Edmonton and has played 455 games in his career, with 45 goals and 222 points.

A left-handed shot, the Wings grabbed Gustafsson when they couldn't re-sign Shayne Gostisbehere, who returned to Carolina (three years, $9.6 million, $3.2 AAV). Gostisbehere is a significant loss after a 56-point season with the Wings and his ability to run a power play (27 assists, 29 points).

Gustafsson is arguably better defensively, but isn't likely to match Gostisbehere's effectiveness with the puck.

▶ Lagesson, 28, split last season with Anaheim and Toronto. More of a defensive defenseman, Lagesson had four assists in 30 games with Toronto (with a plus-five rating) and no points in 10 games with Anaheim (with a minus-two rating).

A 2014 fourth-round pick of Edmonton, Lagesson had played 100 games in the NHL with 11 points, all assists, with a plus-two rating.

Lagesson is likely targeted for the Griffins, although with his NHL experience, he could land a spot on the opening night roster depending on how the remainder of the summer shakes out for the Wings' roster.

▶ Talbot, who'll be 37 on Friday, played in 54 games with Los Angeles last season. He had a 27-20-6 record, with a 2.50 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and three shutouts. Talbot made the NHL All-Star Game with the Kings.

But the playoffs were a different story, with Talbot struggling mightily, losing three games with a 5.30 GAA and .861 SVS.

The Wings already have Ville Husso and Alex Lyon on the roster, so it'll be interesting to see where Talbot fits. The Wings had three goaltenders on the NHL roster last season (James Reimer was the third) but the lack of practice time for the goaltenders and inability to play regularly seemed to be issues with the goaltenders.

▶ Campbell is likely ticketed for minor league affiliate Grand Rapids to team with prospect Sebastian Cossa.

Campbell, 32, spent most of last year in the minors after a disastrous time in Edmonton. Signed to a five-year contract worth $25 million, Campbell was bought out last week by the Oilers.

Campbell was 1-4-0 with a 4.50 GAA and .873 SVS with Edmonton this season, after going 21-9-4 with a 3.41 GAA and .888 SVS the previous season.

The Wings were unable to retain Gostisbehere and forward David Perron among their own unrestricted free agents.

Perron left for Ottawa on a two-year deal worth $8 million ($4 million AAV), term and price tag the Wings had no interest in matching.

Perron had 17 goals and 30 assists last season and plays with an edge the Wings might lack. Perron's Stanley Cup-winning experience (winning in St. Louis) and veteran presence were important in the locker room, and he was a positive influence in the locker room.

Interestingly, Perron now goes to an Ottawa team that lacks many of the positive ingredients that Perron can bring to the Senators.

Election latest: Polls close soon... Here are the best dogs, cats and, err, guinea pigs we've spotted at polling stations

Polling stations around the country are open until 10pm. Sky News' election night TV coverage starts at 9pm - watch live by pressing play, and follow live updates below throughout the night.

  • Live reporting by Ben Bloch

We know we told you an hour ago that we were sharing the final dog pictures for the day, but we received a late entry that we couldn't not share.

Meet Ralph, a Cocker Spaniel who went along to a polling station in Leeds.

As a reminder, voting continues for another hour and 15 minutes...

Maybe you've had a quick pint after work before heading to your polling station - but is that allowed?

It turns out, voting while drunk is not against the law.

However, if you're suspected of being incapacitated by alcohol or drugs, you may be asked questions by the staff in charge.

If they are unhappy with your answers, you could be turned away until you've sobered up.

Can I discuss who I am voting for?

Political discussion is not allowed inside and immediately around the polling station in case it influences other voters.

If you're heard talking about the candidates, parties or who you're voting for by polling station staff, you will be asked to stop.

Can I spoil my vote?

Yes - if you don't want it to be counted.

with the choice of candidates or political parties.

Spoilt votes are declared invalid, and the number of blank and spoilt votes is announced along with other election results.

Spoiling your vote could mean voting for every candidate or none at all or writing or drawing on the ballot paper.

However, be careful about marking anything besides a cross on your ballot paper if you want your vote counted.

You should not sign your ballot paper. If your name is identifiable, your vote will not count as it needs to be anonymous.

Do I have to vote?

You do not have to vote by law - it is your choice to do so or not.

There are strict rules broadcasters have to adhere to on polling day, which is why you won't see any political news on the Sky News website or TV channel for the next few hours.

The rules are there to prevent any influence over how people choose to vote.

Ofcom rules state that any discussion and analysis of election issues must finish when the polls open, which was at 7am today.

Broadcasters are also not allowed to publish the results of any opinion poll on election day until the polls close at 10pm.

Over the past decade, this has meant that photos of dogs at polling stations has become a phenomenon - in lieu of more substantial political news.

Sky News readers across the country have been sending in pictures of their glorious dogs outside polling stations.

We even had one pooch all the way from the US (who wanted to remind people to send their postal votes - although admittedly, it may be a bit late now).

Here is a collection of the best boys and girls accompanying their owners as they head to vote.

At Sky News we've been bringing you pictures of dogs at polling stations throughout the day... but it's not just dogs. We've had some great pictures of cats, guinea pigs and babies too.

Here's a picture of Camilla the Ragdoll in a buggy outside a polling station in Nine Elms, Battersea.

And here is Love Love the guinea pig at a polling station in Brighton and Hove, who got so excited she managed to escape her owner before being caught and taken home.

Iris celebrated her first general election in Granborough, Buckinghamshire today, despite an initial misunderstanding where she thought they were going boating...

This is Scribble the blind cat, at the Bemerton Methodist polling station in Salisbury.

We've been loving all the pictures of dogs you've been sending in throughout the day - but if you have any pictures of other animals at polling stations please send them in.

Include where the polling station is, the name of your pet and your name, if you wish.

Here is how to send them to us:

If you want to send us pictures and video from your mobile phone use ' Your Report ' on the Sky News app.

Or  send us a message on WhatsApp .

By sending us your video footage/photographs/audio you agree we can broadcast, publish and edit the material and pass it onto others for similar use in any media worldwide, without any payment being due to you. Please do not submit your contribution unless you accept this.

There isn't long left to vote now - but if you're making a late trip to the polling station, we've got your questions covered...

Pencils will be provided for people to cast their vote - but if you've got a lucky pen, you're welcome to bring your own.

Pencils are used for practical reasons, according to the Electoral Commission - with ink pens, there's the risk they may run out or the ink smudges on the ballot paper, potentially leading to it being rejected if it appears spoilt.

Can I wear political slogans while voting?

There is nothing to stop you from wearing clothing with a political slogan while voting, but campaigning is not allowed in polling stations, so you must leave immediately after voting.

Can I go to a polling station if I’ve not registered to vote?

You can only go inside a polling station if you are registered to vote at that station.

Staff at the door will ask for your name, address, and ID before you are given your ballot papers and proceed to a voting booth.

Can I have help if I am disabled?

You can take another adult into the polling booth if you are disabled and need help voting.

This is where there is an exception to the rule only allowing voters registered at that polling station to enter.

Anyone over the age of 18 can help you vote. You can also ask polling station staff for help.

Measures to make voting accessible should also be in place, including providing a tactile voting device for blind or partially sighted voters, having a low-level polling booth, and displaying a large-print version of the ballot paper.

It is the first big moment of election night. The exit poll is the moment millions tune in for a first sniff of the eventual result of the general election.

And in Election 2024 this poll, with its impressive track record, sometimes down to a margin of only a few seats, will, once again, be a key part of broadcasters' coverage - including here at Sky News - on Thursday night.

The current model was devised in 2005 by Professor John Curtice and statistician David Firth and it has been consistently reliable, bar 2015 when the seat numbers suggested a hung parliament and David Cameron scraped a thin majority.

But for the most part, its accuracy has been dependable. In 2010, it correctly predicted the exact number of seats for the Conservatives.

Commissioned by the broadcasters - Sky News, the BBC and ITV News - the fieldwork is carried out by IPSOS UK who will have interviewers at 133 polling stations around the country this year.

People who have just voted will be asked to privately fill in a replica ballot paper and place it into a ballot box as they leave their local community centre, church hall or station.

Researchers can only deploy to a fraction of the total constituencies in England, Scotland and Wales, so locations are chosen to best reflect the demographics of the country with an urban and rural spread.

However, many of the locations will be in marginal seats, where the swing between the main parties will be tracked.

The same polling stations are targeted year after year so the swing from the last election's exit poll, along with other data at constituency level, can be analysed by those crunching the numbers.

The data collected at the polling stations is sent back by interviewers to IPSOS UK at several stages throughout the day.

It's processed there and sent via a secure data pipeline to the broadcasters' statisticians and political scientists who are locked down in a secret location in the capital.

By 10pm their work is done - and the fruit of that data gathering and analysis - the first real glimpse of the electorate's verdict - is being digested and picked apart.

There are strict rules in place to make sure the election is fair - including around whether you can take any photos or selfies at polling stations.

The rules state you should not take any photos - including selfies - inside the polling station.

That is because it is against the law to share how someone has voted, is about to vote, or the unique ID ballot paper number - all of which could end up in the shot with photos taken inside the polling station.

Breaking the law could mean you're handed a fine of up to £5,000, or six months in prison.

You and your dogs are welcome to take photos outside the polling station.

Does that mean I can't use my phone in the polling station?

You can use your phone inside the polling station - including in the voting booth, for example, if you need to use the torch or an app to help you read the ballot paper.

It's up to the returning officer - the person in charge of the polling station - to set the venue's rules around mobile phone use and train staff accordingly.

You will need to remove headphones when giving your name, address, and ID to staff, and if you're having a loud phone conversation you can expect to be told to be quiet.

Election experts - otherwise known as psephologists - have headed down into the exit poll bunker to work out how the public has voted today and what it will mean for the makeup of Parliament.

Patrick English, director of political analytics at YouGov, said he would be going in with Professor John Curtice, who helped devise the current model in 2015 along with statistician David Firth.

Once in the bunker they will be processing information from replica ballot papers people across the country will have filled out after voting.

Election analysts and political scientists will be sealed inside the secret room in London as they pore over the data - before giving the public their first glimpse of the electorate's verdict in the 10pm exit poll.

Tomato and Mozzarella Bites

This finger food is a perfect summer party appetizer because it highlights juicy tomatoes and fresh-from-the-plant basil with creamy, chilled mozzarella. Instead of using the balsamic vinegar as a dip I drizzled it on top of the bites with some zesty Italian dressing and dried herbs. Turned out great," wrote reviewer Kristina.

Zucchini Corn Fritters

"My family and I loved these fritters! I had no fresh corn on hand and used a can of sweet corn which came out fine. Would have been unbelievable had I used fresh!" wrote reviewer Plumtickled. Instead of frying each batch, make them a head of time and keep them heated in a warm oven.

Prosciutto e Melone (Italian Ham and Melon)

Surround ripe, juicy melon with a layer of salty prosciutto, an ultra-thin ham that provides a burst of salt to accentuate the melon's sweetness. "A very easy and elegant appetizer - perfect for entertaining guests. You can get creative with the presentation if you like and it's always a hit," writes Jillian.

From About You Decor … Our design is a symbol of dawn and a distant endless horizon. Ahead is a long, happy life without any borders. An international couple, Pavel and Cherry, met in London and have been walking together for many years.

red wing sailboat

From the Bride, Cherry… My husband and I we decided to have our summer wedding in Moscow because the city is where his roots are. As we knew we were going to have the other wedding ceremony in China, we wanted our Moscow one to be very personal and intimate. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen, together with many of our friends whom we’ve also known for a decade.

red wing sailboat

I didn’t want to walk down the aisle twice so the plausibility of my request quickly came into discussion. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂

We all love our photographer Julia! She’s so talented and her style is so unique. Our beloved host Alex is exceptional who made everyone laugh and cry. It was truly a blessing to have so many kind and beautiful souls on our big day. Thank you all!

I’m still not convinced this Moscow wedding, captured to perfection by  Sonya Khegay , isn’t actually an inspiration session—it’s just  that breathtaking. From Sonya Khegay … It was the last day of April and still very cold in the morning. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasing and no one expected that the sun would come out, but miracles happen and light rain gave way to the warm rays.

I love how all the details went together, you could feel the harmony in everything throughout the entire wedding day from the morning until the fireworks.

A gentle look of the bride, elegant but so airy and unique decor, the fresh and light atmosphere of early spring and, of course, true happiness in the eyes. My heart becomes so warm from these memories, it is always a pleasure to see the birth of a new family of two loving hearts.

You really can’t go wrong with simple: a beautiful Bride , perfectly pretty petals , loved ones all around. But add in an amazing firework show  to cap off the night and simple just became downright extraordinary. Captured by Lena Elisseva , with assistance by  Katya Butenko , this rustic Russian celebration is simply fantastic. See it all in the Vault right here !

From Lena Eliseeva Photo …  This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.

All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.

At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.

The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

These photos from Lena Kozhina are so stunningly beautiful – as in you can’t help but stop and stare – it’s hard to believe it’s real life. But these pics are proof of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom’s celebration at Moscow’s Fox Lodge , surrounded by vibrant colors and breathtaking blooms . Oh, and the idea of prepping for your Big Day outside in the sun ? Brilliant. See more bright ideas right here !

From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.

Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
