wayfinder support vessel

Fact file: seven things you didn't know about 68m ShadowCat Wayfinder

Now for sale with Edmiston , BOAT explores the 68.2-metre Incat Crowther support vessel Wayfinder . The superyacht is reportedly owned by the former managing director of Microsoft, Bill Gates, and is instantly recognisable by her multihull design and blue helipad, which doubles as a sports court.

Delivered in 2021, the second Shadowcat builds on the capability of the shipyard's flagship catamaran, Hodor , which was delivered in 2019 . Able to carry an armada of watertoys and transport guests between helicopters and tenders, Wayfinder is the perfect stand-alone charter yacht or shadow vessel for an ambitious itinerary. Here are seven things you didn't know about the world's largest ShadowCat, lying in Antibes...

1. She is one of the world's largest floating playgrounds

At 68 metres, Wayfinder pips its 66-metre sistership Hodor to the post in terms of size and is packed with the same attention-grabbing amenities. The support vessel is a treasure trove of toys but is also kitted out with the usual suspects – Jet Skis, water skis, wakeboards, Seabobs and snorkelling equipment – as well as diving equipment located in its dive compressor. She is capable of carrying a helicopter and five large tenders.

2. The hulls are dedicated to service areas

Wayfinder 's hulls are dedicated to service areas, including waste management, laundry, workshops and stores. The support vessel meets the IMO’s latest Tier III emission guidelines and comprises four decks with accommodation for 12 guests across 11 cabins, including nine single cabins and two twin cabins, each equipped with en suite facilities. There is provision for an additional two occasional workers in a twin cabin in the crew quarters.

3. There is a dedicated crew of 19-20

There is a dedicated crew of 19-20 yacht crew on board, including Master Mariners, RYA Yachtmasters, a dive instructor, deck medic, ex-military and Merchant Navy officers and engineers, Royal Yacht chefs and interior crew. With a team of dedicated professionals and explorer-friendly toys, Wayfinder is optimised for excursions to surrounding islands and below the sea.

4. She can be booked as a charter yacht in her own right or to accompany a mothership

Built at the Astilleros Armón’s Burela shipyard in Spain, Wayfinder exists as both a charter yacht in her own right and as an accompanying vessel to a mothership. The yacht can provide transfers between helicopters and tenders and has a heli-lounge where guests can wait for their helicopter transfer. The main deck is dedicated to tender and toy storage, while accommodation is found on the upper deck. There are also two areas for dining featuring sea views.

5. The large open aft deck is multifunctional

The large open aft deck is built for function and fun. A bird's eye view of the support vessel will reveal an expansive space, characterised by a blue floor and unmistakable H – serving as a certified helipad for arrivals and departures and doubling up as a pickleball court for charter guests.

6. She has a gym on the water's edge

A fold-down transom reveals a fully equipped gym with direct access to the sea; images revealing free weights, machines and a punching bag for boxing. Located on the lower deck portside, the fold-out beach club allows guests to work out by the water's edge with impressive sea views.

7. She is capable of worldwide operation

Excluding Ice Zones, she is capable of worldwide operation and her 14.4-metre beam and draft of 2.4 metres permit close coastline navigation. Dan Mace, technical manager of Incat Crowther, described Wayfinder as boasting "ultimate flexibility and operational efficiency." He added: "The high speed and low fuel consumption are impressive. The design offers a stable platform for the safe transfer of guests from a helicopter, via tenders. The hull provides a 70 per cent increase in stability for loading and off-loading its equipment and tenders."

Lying in Antibes, Wayfinder is asking €55,000,000 with Edmiston. She is also available to charter with Edmiston with a weekly rate from €375,000.

Wayfinder LOA: 68.2m Beam: 14.4m Draught: 3.5m Speed (max/cruise): 20/14 Power: 2 x MTU diesel engines Gross Tonnage: 1737 GT Passengers: 12 guests + 2 occasional workers Crew: 30 Price: €55,000,000

Austal to build Incat Crowther designed catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries

incat catamaran price

MEDIA RELEASE

21 JANUARY 2024

AUSTAL TO BUILD INCAT CROWTHER DESIGNED CATAMARAN FOR ROTTNEST FAST FERRIES

Austal Australasia has been awarded a contract to construct a 32-metre catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries, based in Hillarys, Western Australia.

Collaborating with vessel designer Incat Crowther, Austal will commence construction of the aluminium catamaran at the company’s Philippines shipyard in the first quarter of CY2024.

Austal Limited Chief Executive Officer Paddy Gregg said the new contract continues a long and successful association between Austal and Australian-based designer Incat Crowther that has delivered multiple vessels over several decades.

“Austal and Incat Crowther have been successfully working together to deliver commercial vessels for over 20 years, including multiple ferries and crew transfer vessels for customers throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East,” Mr Gregg said.

“We’re delighted to be working with Incat Crowther again, on this exciting new catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries; locally owned and operated from Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth, Western Australia.

“The Austal team look forward to delivering an outstanding new vessel for Rottnest Fast Ferries that will offer an exceptional experience for passengers and a reliable and efficient vessel for the operators.”

The 32 metre aluminium catamaran will have a capacity for up to 400 passengers and 5 crew seated over 3 decks, and extensive cargo space available for passenger’s bicycles and baggage securely stored on 2 decks. With 2 x 1029kW MAN D2862 diesel engines driving fixed pitch propellers, the vessel will have an operating speed of up to 25 knots on the 45 minute journey from Hillarys Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island.

Incat Launches World’s Largest Electric Ferry With A Capacity Of 2100 Guests

Electric power is currently flexing muscles as the largest electric ferry in the world – boasts the capacity of carrying 2,100 guests and their vehicles – is all prepared for delivery in the next two years. Incat Tasmania, an Australia-based manufacturer of ferries termed high-speed craft (HSC), is now geared up to deliver the 148-meter Utility Ro-Pax ferry. This will be the largest electric ferry in the world.

Designed by a firm named Revolution Design and constructed by Incat, the unique ferry is operated by two electric motors (5 – 9.6 MW) placed beneath the vessel’s hull. The vessel can be loaded with 226 vehicles at up to 25 knots for a range of 100 nm.

Buquebus operates many Incat vessels, especially in South America. Buquebus will use the ferry to transport passengers between Uruguay and Argentina.

Incat world's largest ferry

The vessel was intended to be operated by LNG. Still getting second thoughts, Buquebus and Incat agreed it would be best for the environment and customers to opt for zero-emission electricity.

Even though swapping for electric propulsion needs a heavy redesign, Clifford mentions that the company would replace almost 500 tons of equipment and fuel tanks with 400 tons of batteries to maintain a lightweight.

Shipping reportedly contributes a high amount of carbon dioxide every year, accounting for almost 3% globally (European marine traffic reportedly accounts for almost 12%). The International Maritime Organization aims to reduce CO2 emissions for new vessels built by 30% by 2025 while lowering by 40% the average fleet emissions by the year 2030.

Electric ferries and vessels can play a crucial role in such a big transition.

Zero-emission ferries would be an excellent place to begin electrifying as they typically run the same channels, making it easy to place charging infrastructure. Not only are electric ferries going to help save the environment, but they’ll also save the operators a lot of money.

The first all-electric ferry in Norway reportedly claimed that it lowered the costs by 80%. Besides, Ellen, the self-proclaimed world’s greatest electric ferry (before Incat’s) functioning in Southern Denmark, helps save up to 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.

"Nordlicht II was developed with Incat Crowther in accordance with our exacting requirements.  Incat Crowther developed the design, held a tender process to allow AG EMS to select the most suitable shipyard, and built the ship in a 3D digital model. This facilitated Penguin Shipyard to deliver a tailor made vessel.  Incat Crowther are the ideal shipbuilding partner." Claus Hirsch, Fleet Manager AG-EMS

Incat Crowther allowed us the flexibility to incorporate changes and viewing these on 3D digital models really helped in that process. We could see how it was all going to work together during the physical construction." Martin Rice, CEO Farra Marine Limited

How we do it

Incat Crowther’s holistic approach to vessel procurement centres around an operation-specific design developed in partnership with the operator - Your Vision, Our Innovation. We perform an iterative process to communicate the project to stakeholders and allow the freedom to develop the project within set parameters. A functional design is then performed to define the vessel for certification.

Incat Crowther delivers the best value shipbuilding solution using Digital Shipbuilding technology. Technical risk is minimised and comprehensive information is generated.  This allows options for manufacturing considering a prioritisation of factors.  The process includes a Quality Management System to oversee manufacturing, and beyond commissioning, a 3D digital twin for lifetime maintenance.

Throughout the life cycle of a ship, Incat Crowther offers a full range of services to ensure efficient operations and regulatory compliance.  As engineers and innovators, Incat Crowther is constantly in pursuit of developing new ideas and crossing new frontiers, without overstepping the mark to the bleeding edge.  Incat Crowther is an ideal partner for the development of inspiring new solutions for difficult missions.

Incat poised to deliver the world’s largest, zero emissions, lightweight ferry

Incat Tasmania is currently in discussions to deliver the world’s first large, lightweight, zero emissions ferry.

Amongst vessels under construction at the shipyard is a 130 metre lightweight ferry, originally intended to be powered by LNG, that will carry 2100 passengers and 226 vehicles for Incat’s long term South American customer, Buquebús. Following close consultation with the customer, Incat was recently asked to investigate the possibility of replacing the LNG powerplant with a battery-electric solution.

Whilst there are challenges to overcome, the ship which is to be delivered in 2025, when battery electric, would be the world’s largest, lightweight, zero emissions ferry operating on any route in the world.

Incat Tasmania has always been an innovator, ahead of the technology curve and the delivery of an electric zero emissions ferry will cement Incat as the world leader in zero emissions, lightweight shipping.

Incat Group Chairman and Founder Robert Clifford said “the customer wants this to happen, Incat wants this to happen, and whilst there are matters to be finalised, I am extremely confident that Incat can deliver this ground-breaking ship. In my experience unless we see something come in from left field, this is a ‘done deal’.

“Obviously, there needs to be sufficient energy supply in the ports that the ship would visit but we understand that this is progressing positively. The batteries and electric motors are being worked through with our suppliers, to ensure they can deliver the technology required in the timeframe we need them.

“Zero emissions shipping is the future and Incat based in Tasmania, one of the few places on the planet which has already delivered net zero, is now poised to revolutionise the world ’ s shipping fleet by delivering the world’s first zero emissions, lightweight ship,” he says.

Incat Managing Director Craig Clifford says this is a unique opportunity for Incat.  Whilst there are always challenges if you change any aspect of the design of a ship part way through build, in simple terms, this is just swapping one method of propulsion for another: it will however have significant environmental benefits, and open up a whole new market for these types of vessels.

Former Tasmanian Premier and Incat’s Strategic Adviser Peter Gutwein said “delivering the world’s first large battery electric ferry for Buquebus would lead to exponential growth in the international market for large lightweight electric ships.

“The world wants large, lightweight zero emission ships and we are already scaling up our workforce and production facility in readiness for what will be a significant expansion.

“It will be a win- win for both the environment and for investment in long-term skilled jobs in Tasmania,” he said.
