ABOUT THIS YACHT

Classic lines, accomplished power and agility, a singular yachting experience. The SanJuan30 is the ideal size for day cruising with friends and family, as well as overnights for two. Luxury abounds both above and below deck with teak throughout, and fit and finish of joinery and systems typically found only in the mega-yacht class. Form follows function gracefully, with intuitively designed spaces requiring simple maintenance. The SanJuan30 is engineered and built for confident operation in all sea conditions and for decades of service. A lightweight hull coupled with efficient twin engines gives the yacht sportscar maneuverability, and craftsmanship from bow to stern is second to none. Casual cruising has never been so beautiful.

The SanJuan30 is designed to entertain guests as much as it is the helmsman. An open design philosophy makes the most of every space to give both cockpit and deck areas ample room for a wide range of activities. From entertaining to sportfishing, relaxing to sunbathing, the SanJuan30 offers extreme flexibility. A removable aft seat and table are available for additional cockpit seating and dining. While underway, seating for two at the helm allows the captain and a friend to share the experience. Below deck, an ample cabin is appointed warmly in gleaming teak with a satin sheen. Interior lighting is stylish. A V-berth in the bow luxuriously berths two. A large hanging locker with teak louvered doors provides storage. And a larger than expected head includes cabinets for additional storage and a standup shower.

1977 Clark San Juan 30

  • Description

Seller's Description

This beautifully refit 1977 San Juan 30 Coast Guard Documented vessel “Swirl” is truly one of a kind. Completely refit from top to bottom with the intention of circumnavigating she’s ready for whatever adventure you can dream of for her next. Having just completed a nearly 600 miles solo passage from Port Angeles to Crescent City, she’s proven herself an excellent passage making vessel.

Equipment: 120% light wind heads’l (2022) 97% partially battened upwind blade heads’l (2009, but excellent condition) J1 stays’l (2023) 110% light wind stays’l (2023) Storms’l, high clue “storm try” (if unfamiliar, basically it’s a storms’l you can beat with) (2009, basically unused) Full batten mains’l, 3 reefs (2023) Spare full batten mains’l, 2 reefs (2009, unused) Racing Spinnaker (2009, unused, it’s very big.)

Swirl has a custom hard dodger making rough sailing conditions or just living through the rain an enjoyable experience. The cozy interior was completely rebuilt in 2021 and is a one of a kind design.

Deck refit and repaint completed in 2022, you’ll find no soft spots in this deck and every fitting was pulled and reinstalled using a drill fill drill technique. Topside sanded, primed, rolled and tipped “seafoam green” 2022. Bottom painted with 2 coats with seahawk cukote July 2023.

New, custom rudder with modern shape and design made 2022.

Boat fully re-rigged 2022. Headstay and capshrouds upgraded from 1/4 to 9/32 316ss. Innerstay and lowers 1/4 316ss. Backstay and running backs 5/16 dyneema. Custom tensioner on backstay and 5:1 purchase on running backs making rig tuning a breeze. New tangs, chain plates all pulled and chain plates and bolts inspected. All running rigging is new, replaced piece by piece between 2021-2023.

Included tech: DigiYacht AIT5000 AIS with dedicated GAM antennas AIS antenna. McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS EPIRB Raymarine EV1000 tiller autopilot (this thing is a beast and draws surprisingly little power) 200ah LiPo4FE battery 400w solar Victron MPPT charge controllers Renogy 1000W inverter Victron Shore Power Controller Standard Horizon Eclipse VHF with GPS Standard Horizon HX851 handheld VHF Dometic CFX 27L fridge Depth sounder (it’s original to the boat, but works like a charm) Richie BN-202 compass All wiring replaced in 2021 with marine tinned copper wiring. Custom composting head Cellphone booster (you can anchor places with no signal, flip a switch and have full coverage, and turn it off when you want your remote paradise back) Navik self steering windvane Generac 2200 generator Series Drogue and stern mounted chainplates for heavy weather

Included is a 1992 Achilles 8ft tender with wooden floorboards and a 2021 Mercury 6hp long shaft. The tender easily planes at 14 knots with this outboard.

Ground tackle: Rocna 10kg (anchored through 70knots with no problem) 210ft 5/16 chain, 150ft 1/2in nylon three strand rode 20lbs Danforth spare/kedging anchor Kedging rode 30ft 5/16 chain with 200ft 5/16 rode

Lots of spares and parts, if anything breaks you should have spares on board. The boat was stocked to sail to remote locations.

Water: Total capacity of 81 gallons. 35 gallon primary tank, 25 gallon aux bladder and 3, 7 gallon jerrys with denoted storage. All passes through a 2 stage, one and then half micron carbon filter before the faucet (with 2 years of replacement filters included) meaning you can put creek water in and clean drinking water comes out. Electric pumps move water between tanks and dedicated pump for sink operation.

Propane, two burner cooktop. 17lbs fiberglass propane tank included.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on an IOR 1/2 ton prototype. A more racing oriented version (with a shorter coach roof and longer cockpit, deeper keel etc.) was also available. How many of these were built in unknown. Available with the deeper keel: 6.0’/1.83m Tall rig: I: 39.5’/12.04m J: 12.5’/3.81m P: 35.0’/10.67m E: 9.5’/2.90m Thanks to SJ 30 owner Chris F. for providing additional information.

Review of San Juan 30

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 75.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The San Juan 30 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.58 - 1.68 meter (5.18 - 5.48 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

San Juan 30 is typically equipped with a Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine at 30.0 hp (22 kW), which gives a max speed about 7.4 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 65.0 liters (17 US gallons, 14 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for San Juan 30 is 2.07, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for San Juan 30 is about 146 kg/cm, alternatively 822 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 146 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 822 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 25m 2 (269 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Boat: Clark, San Juan 30
# 310 I have always wanted to find out more info. But no one ever talks about them. Is there something wrong with them? or so few that no one knows anything about them.

These are great there comfortable and Sail awesomely. Does anyone on this Forum own one except for myself. I know they made a lot of 28's and very few 30's I find myself sometimes wondering why does nobody talk about one or ever mention it when referring to 30 ft class this is a Sailing vessel that is Strong well built and easy to sail.

I have sailed her many Miles in truly rough conditions. it has never Failed me she is smooth never bumpy in waves it plows right thru them no hard bumps. I have had the opportunity to sail on many 30 footers and none can compare to the ride you get aboard mine.

Can anybody offer any advise or something I want to learn about I find tidbit's of info on things like where is the best spot to install a auto there are no answers out there I joined this Group to hopefully find some answers to questions I have about outfitting the My Father was a in the USN I have had the pleasure of sailing on quite a few boats in the 30 foot class in my lifetime. None of them even compare to the comfort of Sailing A Clark 30 they have all had a bumpy ride and none even compare with the speed I get even with a 1-2 .

I have Sailed her in 60 - 80 not by Choice but out of getting to when a wave swamped the Killing the . I had only one choice. Unfurl the and Hang on. To my Surprise I thought I would be scared to death my biggest worry was the Wouldn't hold on it did and In that speed of wind I found Myself really Sailing in 30 plus foot waves she plowed right thru them no slams of the bow she was very stable I was completely surprised.

So I ask Please if anyone knows any technical Data for this boat not Sailboat data Page I know this info. But real Life Data Have you Sailed on one Have you ever owned one. share some info with me.

I thank you all so much for the tech advise I read for other Sailing Vessels But would like some input on the one I own.

Please feel free to respond I want to hear the Good The Bad and the Worst

Thank You S/V UsCa a Truly Happy 30 Owner

Boat: 1962 Columbia 29 MK 1 #37
and not many folks on this forum have them or considered them. Sail.net has a bunch though I bet. I am with you though, it looks like a really fun coastal cruiser to me. In my case now my preferences lean toward no spade rudders and no for cruising, but those are just my quirks brought on by age, no doubt.

Boat: Fountaine Pajot Lavezzi 40
number, but it was in the low digits. If I correctly, the owner bought hull and from the manufacturer and finished the boat himself.

With very limited funds, he had to choose between fitting out below and fitting out above deck. Since this was a boat, below deck out and the only furnishing was a continuous layer of midnight blue velour on hull and overhead and a porta-potty. Going below at night was like climbing into the womb. It was good practice to announce yourself when going below at an out of town pre-race raft up, because if a crew mate got lucky you wouldn't know it until it until you'd become a party to an unintended threesome...

As I remember, the thing was squirrely as hell deep down wind and we often flew a blooper when sailing deep. That was a lot of spaghetti on a 30' boat. I have fond memories of that boat. Anyone know what became of her?

. I worked at a machine shop on the other end of the street. Thats all i know, but i have seen them on craigs list in the area so i wsould imagine that most were in or around . Lots of sj 21's around here too.

while I was 1 was in north west the other in southern I never did see them in person but they sounded like a good boat but I ended up with a farallon 29 of which only about 100 were made so I find even fewer posts on those. My girl lives in the I see you're in as well perhaps we could meet up sometime I'd love to see how you got your boat rigged.

, like a J29. Yes, they can have berths for sleeping, but the ones I saw were really intended for , races.

There are a lot of boats that never get mentioned here, including many that are designed primarily for cruising.

Strait Orcas and Sucia are in my front yard. I hope to see you at My BBQ this coming Summer. Larry I have read most of you they have helped me to enjoy sailing more. I am Handicapped I only have the use of my Left arm, the right one is there but just doesn't want to anymore. I have to have the Winches manned by my wife. Sandy And I have been working on her for a few years now. She's not as pretty on the inside as some of the cruisers I have seen but we make do .

We would love to meet up sometime and Sail along side. I go extremely fast upwind but the downwind is a little squirrely until I fig out the right combo to steady her up in 80knt wind though downwind she flew like a speedboat seamed as we were skipping from wave top to wave top smooth and fast kinda Scary to be Honest.

Look forward to meeting you soon and Don't forget the bbq in june I'll post a date in april.

Boat: Cal 40 (sold). Still have a Hobie 20
raceboat to meet the half ton rating. All three of these boats have a similar heritage of being IOR or close to IOR designs.

I like the way they sail in light air and upwind. With the fairly low form stability you're going to sail more heeled over than other designs. Downwind like most IOR boats they are squirrelly. If you depower enough downwind you get away from the fun mode of the era of whoever broaches the least wins the . Even depowered though you have to be fairly active to stay on course. If you're not racing there's really no point in putting up a lot of sail downwind, they don't go past , they just create a large stern wave.

I like the boats. They're a good choice for light air regions like , but they're pretty far down on my list as to what to buy for a cruising boat, local or long distance.

Boat: C&C 37
against a San Juan 30 PHRF at a local club. Very quick boat in light air and is still being sailed against many newer boats extremely competitively.

Nice boat! and balances very well.

1999 Mainship Pilot 30

Mainship pilot 30.

Manufacturer Provided DescriptionThe Mainship Pilot 30 is at home on the Chesapeake as well as in the Bahamas or the San Juan Islands. The full protection of the sand shoe design allows for beaching and running in shallow water. The full keel provides excellent stability in a beam sea while allowing the boat to track like it was on rails. The classic down-east look is enhanced by the sturdy low-maintenance aluminum bow and safety rails. Whether the purpose is to fish, dive or cruise, this Pilot 30 can fit the bill. The elongated cockpit allows for plenty of anglers, and the wide covering boards will accept a battalion of rod holders. A freshwater washdown and optional swim platform with a ladder will please the divers. The bridgedeck settees will double as extra bunks for the overflow of family and friends or as just a great place to tune up a tan. In the cabin, large V-berths double as a dinette and the mid-seats provide a great place to relax with a good book. The teak trimmed galley comes complete with a two-burner range, a refrigerator, a sink and even an icebox. Storage is plentiful, while light and ventilation is provided by six screened portlights and an overhead hatch. The large head boasts a Corian counter, an electric toilet and an integral shower, plus dry storage and a mirror. The single diesel will propel the Pilot 30 at a pleasant turn of speed while providing a truly economical rate of consumption. The wood-free exterior needs only soap and water and some waxing to maintain the sheen of the premium MaxGuard gelcoat. The Pilot 30 is ergonomically designed to give the captain an excellent vantage point to observe surroundings and to pilot in safety. The tilt-out helm station offers plenty of space to accept all kinds of electronics (including an optional bow-thruster keypad). Sliding helm and companion seats make the cruising even more comfortable. Dangerous Hurricane Beryl restrengthens to Category 4 off Grenada

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Beryl has restrengthened into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm was located about 70 miles (125 kilometers) east of Grenada on Monday morning and had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Beryl was closing in on the southeastern Caribbean, and government officials late Sunday pleaded with people to take shelter from the dangerous Category 3 storm.

The storm was expected to make landfall in the Windward Islands on Monday morning. Hurricane warnings were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“This is a very dangerous situation,” warned the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, saying Beryl was “forecast to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge.”

Beryl was centered about 110 miles (175 kilometers) south-southeast of Barbados early Monday. It had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kph) and was moving west at 20 mph (31 kph). It is a compact storm, with hurricane-force winds extending 30 miles (45 kilometers) from its center.

Image

It had gained Category 4 strength Sunday before weakening slightly, and further fluctuations in strength were forecast.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Martinique and Trinidad. A tropical storm watch was issued for Dominica, Haiti’s entire southern coast, and from Punta Palenque in the Dominican Republic west to the border with Haiti.

Beryl was expected to pass just south of Barbados early Monday and then head into the Caribbean Sea as a major hurricane on a path toward Jamaica. It was forecast to weaken by midweek, but still remain a hurricane while heading toward Mexico.

Historic hurricane

Image

Beryl initially strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane Sunday morning, becoming the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

It took Beryl only 42 hours to strengthen from a tropical depression to a major hurricane — a feat accomplished only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history, and with Sept. 1 as the previous earliest date, hurricane expert Sam Lillo said.

Beryl then gained more power, becoming the earliest Category 4 Atlantic hurricane on record , besting Hurricane Dennis, which became a Category 4 storm on July 8, 2005, hurricane specialist and storm surge expert Michael Lowry said.

“Beryl is an extremely dangerous and rare hurricane for this time of year in this area,” Lowry said in a phone interview. “Unusual is an understatement. Beryl is already a historic hurricane and it hasn’t struck yet.”

Hurricane Ivan in 2004 was the last strong hurricane to hit the southeastern Caribbean, causing catastrophic damage in Grenada as a Category 3 storm.

“So this is a serious threat, a very serious threat,” Lowry said of Beryl.

AP AUDIO: Dangerous Hurricane Beryl restrengthens to Category 4 off Grenada

In a briefing, National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan says people in the Winward Islands should comply with any evacuation orders they might receive.

Reecia Marshall, who lives in Grenada, was working a Sunday shift at a local hotel, preparing guests and urging them to stay away from windows as she stored enough food and water for everyone.

She said that she was a child when Hurricane Ivan struck and that she doesn’t fear Beryl.

“I know it’s part of nature. I’m OK with it,” she said. “We just have to live with it.”

Forecasters warned of a life-threatening storm surge of up to 9 feet (3 meters) in areas where Beryl makes landfall, with 3 to 6 inches (7.6 to 15 centimeters) of rain for Barbados and nearby islands and possibly 10 inches in some areas (25 centimeters).

Warm waters are fueling Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year, said Brian McNoldy, a tropical meteorology researcher at the University of Miami.

Lowry said the waters are now warmer than they would be at the peak of the hurricane season in September.

Beryl marks the farthest east that a hurricane has formed in the tropical Atlantic in June, breaking a record set in 1933, according to Klotzbach.

Image

“Please take this very seriously and prepare yourselves,” said Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “This is a terrible hurricane.”

Bracing for the storm

Long lines formed at gas stations and grocery stores in Barbados and other islands as people rushed to prepare for a storm that rapidly intensified.

Thousands of people were in Barbados for Saturday’s Twenty20 World Cup final , cricket’s biggest event, with Prime Minister Mia Mottley noting that not all fans were able to leave Sunday despite many rushing to change their flights.

“Some of them have never gone through a storm before,” she said. “We have plans to take care of them.”

Mottley said all businesses should close by Sunday evening and warned that the airport would close by nighttime.

Across Barbados, people prepared, including Peter Corbin, 71, who helped his son put up plywood to protect his home’s glass doors. He said by phone that he worried about Beryl’s impact on islands just east of Barbados.

“That’s like a butcher cutting up a pig,” he said. “They’ve got to make a bunker somewhere. It’s going to be tough.”

In St. Lucia, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a national shutdown for Sunday evening and said schools and businesses would remain closed Monday.

“Preservation and protection of life is a priority,” he said.

Looking ahead

Caribbean leaders were preparing not only for Beryl, but for a cluster of thunderstorms trailing the hurricane that had a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

“Do not let your guard down,” Mottley said.

Beryl is the second named storm in what is forecast to be an above-average hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 in the Atlantic. Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Alberto came ashore in northeastern Mexico with heavy rains that resulted in four deaths.

On Sunday evening, a tropical depression formed near the eastern Mexico coastal city of Veracruz, with the National Hurricane Center warning of flooding and mudslides.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts the 2024 hurricane season is likely to be well above average, with between 17 and 25 named storms. The forecast calls for as many as 13 hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

An average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, seven of them hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The storied Pacific Palisades course is one of more than a dozen venue selections revealed by LA28 in its second wave of choices

san juan 30 sailboat

Golf at the storied Pacific Palisades course is one of more than a dozen venue selections for Los Angeles, Carson and Long Beach, revealed by LA28.

Friday’s announcement comes three weeks after LA28 announced venue selections that the organization said will result in $150 million in new revenue and combined savings. That plan highlighted flipping track and field from its normal place in the second week of the Games with swimming, the usual anchor for the Olympics’ first week, to accommodate the opening and closing ceremonies. That plan also included moving swimming to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

“The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will reflect all that the Los Angeles area has to offer, and with these venue assignments, we’re very proud to bring the Games to many of our vibrant and diverse communities,” LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said. “The City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than anywhere else, and Carson and Long Beach, which hosted competitions in previous Games, will host more competitions than ever before. The venues in these cities are world-class, and provide the ideal conditions for athletes and fans, and we look forward to welcoming them in 2028.”

The latest venue reveal also adds seven more sports to venues in the so-called Figueroa corridor between Exposition Park and downtown Los Angeles.

Among the venue locations:

  1. SAN JUAN 30

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
