Abu Dhabi, UAE, 13 December, 2022: His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE , inaugurated Khalifa Port ’s expansion – a major development project with a total investment of AED 4 billion.

His Highness was briefed by His Excellency Falah Mohammed Al Ahbabi, Chairman of AD Ports Group , and Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group , on the key milestones of Khalifa Port expansion projects since its opening ten years ago, and reviewed future plans for the leading port in the region. His Highness also toured the new, expanded facilities and logistics available to serve import and export operations.

His Highness said: “Khalifa Port Expansion is a major national project that is considered an important addition to the UAE’s ports and logistic services and will further enhance the UAE’s position in the global trade”, adding “Khalifa Port, along other national ports, are important cornerstones to the development and diversification of the national economy”.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, member of the Executive Council and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Advisor of Special Affairs at the Presidential Court, His Excellency Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, His Excellency Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, and a number of senior officials.

The official inauguration of the expansion programme by the UAE President marks another major milestone in a year that has seen AD Ports Group list on the Abu Dhabi Securities Market (ADX), open new trade corridors, complete a series of major acquisitions, rapidly transform its business and portfolio of services, and build strong relations with existing and emerging trade partners for the UAE.

As part of the expansion, which includes the development of the port’s South Quay, Khalifa Port Logistics, and Abu Dhabi Terminals at a total investment of AED 4 billion, Khalifa Port has grown from 2.43 km 2 to 8.63 km 2 , while its quay wall has been significantly extended from 2.3 kilometres to 12.5 kilometres. It now provides 21 berths and offers a range of bespoke services for key strategic industries, positioning it among the global elite of deep-water ports, with an estimated value of AED 20.4 billion.

The programme is set to make a major contribution to AD Port Group’s goal of increasing handling capacity at Khalifa Port by 2030 to 15 million TEUs per year, and general cargo handling capacity to 25 million tonnes.

Officially inaugurated by the late Sheikh Khalifa on 12.12.12, Khalifa Port was developed from a stretch of reclaimed land four kilometres out to sea and is now a major hub serving more than 25 container shipping lines with direct links to more than 70 international destinations. It has been ranked in the top five of the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, and now hosts three of the world’s top four shipping operators, CSP COSCO, MSC and CMA CGM.

H.E Falah Mohammed Al Ahbabi, Chairman of AD Ports Group, said : “We are honoured to welcome His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to inaugurate the Khalifa Port expansion, which is a vital national project to support the direction of our wise leadership to position Abu Dhabi and the UAE at the frontier of global trade.

Today, Khalifa Port is one of the most advanced deep-water ports in the world. By continuing to expand our operations internationally, we are honouring the memory of the leaders who placed us on the path to progress. We have continued to reach new heights and deliver outstanding results through our expertise and global focus.”

Capt. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO, AD Ports Group , said: “We thank His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, for honouring us by inaugurating the Khalifa Port expansion. Everything we have achieved throughout our history has been with the support and guidance of the UAE’s leadership.

It is fitting that we are celebrating Khalifa Port ’s 10th Anniversary and Zayed Port ’s 50th Anniversary today in 2022, which has been a transformational year for our organisation as we expanded our international reach and strengthened our portfolio. We have grown from a local champion into a publicly listed group with an expanding global reach. We will continue to expand and invest in the future and demonstrate our capacity for excellence across international markets.”

AD Ports Group has evolved into a significant driver of economic growth, contributing AED 152.8 billion to UAE GDP, representing 13% of the UAE’s non-oil GDP and creating approximately 373,500 jobs. It continues to attract foreign direct investment through economic cities and industrial zones managed by KEZAD Group and provides a broad range of digital services to enable trade and transport.

Key achievements in 2022 include a series of transformative acquisitions, including a 70% stake in Transmar and TCI in Egypt, providing the company with a market-leading platform for operations along the entire Red Sea and beyond; an 80% equity stake in Global Feeder Shipping, contributing to its long-term strategy to become one of the world’s premier short-sea and feeder shipping players; and the acquisition of Noatum, which will enable the company to build a strong international logistics brand with deep roots in this region.

The company has also acquired companies and announced a series of joint ventures to expand its portfolio of maritime services and its global presence, such as SAFEEN Invictus, Divetech, Alligator Shipping, ASCL, and SAFEEN Surveys and Subsea Services.

In addition, AD Ports Group has significantly grown its fleet to more than 175 vessels and expanded the range of trade routes to span most of the world and provide the highest levels of connectivity between the Arabian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, East Africa, and Central Asia.

The result has been a record financial performance – with revenue of AED1,466 million and net profit of AED334 million in Q3 2022 – as well as a significantly higher global profile for the company and for Abu Dhabi as a major driver of trade, industry and logistics.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates, appointed his eldest son Khaled as crown prince of Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, placing him as next in line to take over as the leader of the federation.

The state-run WAM news agency announced the appointment of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as crown prince late Wednesday, without providing further details.

After Sheikh Mohammed, 62, who is commonly known as MBZ, ascended to the presidency last year, rumors swirled about whether he would make one of his brothers his heir.

In that case, the front-runners would have been Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed, the powerful national security chief, Sheikh Mansour, the owner of the Manchester City football club, or the foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah.

Instead, he appears to concentrating power within his immediate family, as Saudi Arabia’s King Salman did by delegating wide-ranging powers to his son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS.

A separate announcement said Sheikh Mohammed had appointed Sheikh Mansour as vice president of the UAE with the approval of the Federal Supreme Council. Sheikh Tahnoun and another brother, Sheikh Hazza, were appointed deputy rulers of Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Khaled, 41, the new crown prince, has risen to prominence at the country’s state security service and as chairman of the powerful Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

The United Arab Emirates, a close U.S. ally, is best known as the home of Dubai, a major international hub for business and travel.

The federation of seven emirates, including oil-rich Abu Dhabi, has rapidly transformed itself over the past half-century from a desert region sparsely populated by Bedouin tribes into a political and economic powerhouse with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including the world’s tallest skyscraper.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the UAE and the driving force behind its creation, ruled from 1971 until his death in 2004. He appointed his eldest son Khalifa as his successor and MBZ as deputy crown prince.

Sheikh Mohammed has been the nation’s de facto leader since Sheikh Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014. Sheikh Khalifa, for whom the world’s largest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, is named, died eight years later, in May 2022.

During Sheikh Mohammed’s rule, the UAE cultivated close ties with neighboring Saudi Arabia, initially joining it in its war against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels before largely exiting the conflict years later. The UAE has sought to project military power across the region as it has opposed the rise of Islamist groups.

In 2020, the UAE normalized relations with Israel in the first of the so-called Abraham Accords, followed by Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. The UAE and other Gulf Arab nations had quietly maintained ties with Israel for years befoe then, drawn together by mutual suspicions of Iran.

The UAE hosts some 3,500 U.S. troops, many at Abu Dhabi’s Al-Dhafra Air Base, from where drones and fighter jets flew missions combating the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. Dubai is the U.S. Navy’s busiest port of call abroad.

But strains have emerged in recent years between Sheikh Mohammed and the U.S., long a guarantor of security in the wider Persian Gulf. The UAE and Saudi Arabia were alarmed by the 2015 nuclear deal reached among Iran, the U.S. and other world powers. The chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 further fueled fears that the U.S. was pulling back from the region.

A planned U.S. sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to the UAE appears to be stalled in part over American concerns about the Emirates’ relationship with China. Meanwhile, the UAE has been careful not to alienate Russia as Moscow wages war on Ukraine.

Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the UAE’s national security adviser and chairman of the ADQ sovereign wealth fund, was named as deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi along with Hazza bin Zayed, another brother of the president.

Sheikh Khaled was previously appointed chairman of the country’s intelligence agency in 2016.

MBZ became ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE, which groups rulers of the seven emirates of the UAE federation, last May after the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, who had ruled Abu Dhabi.

The UAE, a close US ally, is best known as the home of Dubai, a major international hub for business and travel.

Earlier this month, Abu Dhabi, which controls several sovereign wealth funds that together make it one of the world’s wealthiest state investors, announced a reshuffle at the top of its two biggest state funds.

During Sheikh Mohamed’s rule, the UAE cultivated close ties with neighbouring Saudi Arabia, initially joining it in its war against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels before exiting the conflict years later.

The UAE has sought to project military power across the region. In 2020, the UAE normalised relations with Israel in the first of the so-called Abraham Accords, followed by Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.

UAE president names son Abu Dhabi crown prince, brothers to top roles

The choice of sheikh khaled as crown prince reflects a trend across most gulf arab monarchies towards direct lineage — sons over brothers — for succession, including in saudi arabia..

United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed his eldest son Sheikh Khaled as crown prince of Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the Gulf state, and named his brothers to top roles, state media said on Wednesday.

Sheikh Mohammed, who became president and Abu Dhabi ruler last year after running the US-allied OPEC oil producer for years, named his brother Sheikh Mansour as UAE vice president, alongside Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

This appeared to further centralise power in Abu Dhabi, which is the political capital by virtue of its immense oil wealth, of the UAE federation of seven emirates. Dubai is the Gulf’s business and tourism hub.

Sheikh Mohammed appointed his other brothers Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser who controls a sprawling business empire, and Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan as deputy rulers of Abu Dhabi.

By appointing prominent brothers to new roles, he kept “some power-sharing balance, but only within (Abu Dhabi’s) Al Nahyan clan,” Cinzia Bianco, research fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter.

The choice of Sheikh Khaled as crown prince reflects a trend across most Gulf Arab monarchies towards direct lineage – sons over brothers – for succession, including in Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi has held the presidency since the founding of the UAE federation by Sheikh Mohammed’s father in 1971.

Sheikh Mohammed, known as MbZ, had been grooming his son in positions of authority in security — including intelligence — economy and governance, analysts say.

MbZ was de facto ruler for years before assuming power following the death of his brother last May, at a time when the UAE’s longstanding ties with the United States were strained over perceived U.S. disengagement from the region.

He led a realignment of the Middle East when the UAE, with Bahrain, forged ties with Israel in 2020 to create a new anti-Iran axis in the region, while still engaging with Tehran to contain tensions with an eye on economic priorities.

The UAE has also deepened ties with Russia and China.

The country of fewer than 10 million people prides itself on its political and economic stability. It has one of the world’s highest per-capita income levels and is home to millions of expatriate workers who make up the bulk of the workforce.

In a separate decree on Wednesday, MbZ named Sheikh Khaled as head of Abu Dhabi’s executive council, the latest reshuffle at key entities in the emirate, one of the world’s wealthiest state investors.

Earlier this month, Sheikh Tahnoun was named chair of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, among the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. Sheikh Mansour was named chairman of Mubadala, Abu Dhabi’s second-biggest sovereign wealth fund.

UAE leader designates his eldest son as crown prince

Emirates succession.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Instead, he appears to concentrating power within his immediate family, as Saudi Arabia's King Salman did by delegating wide-ranging powers to his son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS.

The federation of seven emirates, including oil-rich Abu Dhabi, has rapidly transformed itself over the past half-century from a desert region sparsely populated by Bedouin tribes into a political and economic powerhouse with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including the world's tallest skyscraper.

Sheikh Khalifa, for whom the world's largest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, is named, died eight years later, in May 2022.

During Sheikh Mohammed's rule, the UAE cultivated close ties with neighboring Saudi Arabia, initially joining it in its war against Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels before largely exiting the conflict years later.
