Tremendous couple of days on the water with Bristol Maritime Academy to earn my level 2 in power boating. Great blend of theory and hands on. Small group size meant lots of time at the helm. Our instructor even doubled as a tour guide pointing out interesting bits of Bristol history. Couldn’t ask for more.

Recently completed the RYA PB2 course. The facilities and equipment were all top notch and the instructor (Jerry Harper) was as good a teacher as I’ve ever had. I think I'll ask myself 'what would Jerry do?' going forwards! For the knowledge and skills gained, and the fun time we had, I think the course was great value. Wholeheartedly recommend!

I took the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course this week with Bristol Maritime Academy. What a great experience! Kat, our instructor, is extremely knowledgeable & skilled, patient, encouraging and very nice as well! She tailored her coaching to each person and took the time so everyone on the course learned and practiced every skill. The Bristol Harbour was a great place to learn skills and the trip down the Avon into the Bristol Channel was exciting! I'm already planning more classes with them - first aid, sea survival, and offshore safety. I am very happy that I went with Bristol Maritime Academy for my course!

RYA Powerboat Level 2. A brilliant hands on course with some classroom learning. We spent more than half our time on the water. Plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The course really improved my knowledge and confidence. The trainer was excellent. I’m looking forward to practicing my new skills.

I recently completed the Power Boat Level 2 course and had an amazing experience. Cat, our instructor, was not only a brilliant teacher but also made the learning process enjoyable and interesting. The course covered everything from map reading, course plotting, and knot tying in the classroom to practical skills like parking, man overboard rescue in the Bristol Channel, and tight u-turns between moored boats. The entire experience, including going through the lock, driving under the suspension bridge, and navigating the channel, was a lot of fun. The course was thorough and delivered in a professional manner. I highly recommend it to anyone interested – it was absolutely worth every penny.

Loved the powerboat lvl 2 course. Kathryn was a great instructor, very knowledgable and passionate about what she does, so you can expect good quality training! Great manouvers guidelines! Nice boat with strong 100hp engine on. They put strong focus on practical knowledge, so there is a bit of theory to learn but majority of time is spent on the water which is fantastic. I took my course in Bristol so it was a great trip on a boat aswell where one can enjoy the view of the city from channel. Its totally different experience! Thanks Kathryn!

We did RYA Powerboat Level 2 over the weekend. Highlights included locking out of the floating harbour with the Matthew and and cruising under the Clifton Suspension Bridge on the way to Portishead. Kat was a fantastic instructor and the boat and kit were great. I would definitely recommend this course with BMA in Bristol.

Eight if us did the Defra 1 course with Annex H and thought the whole thing was fantastic. The office based element was well paced and taught us a lot, and the practical training was a huge amount of fun and gave us a lot to think about. I would highly recommend Bristol Maritime and this course to anyone who works near water.

Did the two day Outdoor First Aid course. Not my first, er, first aid course, but defintely the first time I've left feeling like I know what I would need to do in an emergency. Well delivered, appropriately paced and clear in what our goals were. Not paid for by work, I chose this myself and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting to feel more confident going outside for work, or as I do, to go have fun in the hills.

RYA Power Boat 2 Course (2 days) I can not recommend this course enough. Our instructor Catherine was highly professional, really helpful, and made the whole process fun. She is one of the best instructors I have come across in years. My colleagues in the other boat also gave very good feedback about their instructor. It has exactly the right balance of class room work and practical boating skills. Thanks for a great weekend course.

Excellent course - really nice mix of theory and practical. The instructors tailored their approach for all ages and experience - I was with my 14 year old son and while we were with three other adults he was made to feel very much part of the course and really enjoyed all of it. Katherine, our instructor, was very (very) calm and clear and gave positive feedback and encouragement while always showing you how you could improve. Would highly recommend.

Really and thoroughly enjoyed this outdoors first aid course. Learnt a lot and felt so confident. Kat was an excellent trainer and was full of knowledge to answer all of our questions and not afraid to double check something if she was unsure of all of our many many questions. She took all of our individual reasons for being on the course into consideration and related it to the information she gave us. Thank you so much, I feel so ready to keep people safe in potentially hazardous environments.

Great set up here in the heart of Bristol. I managed to park right at the harbour office for free so that's great. Lucky for our small group of 3 we had great weather on both days. Jordan, our instructor was very calm and relaxing to be with and did not hesitate to go over each thing if you didn't get it right first time. An asset to the business! The boats were clean and well maintained and all the correct gear provided for us. I did my power boat level 2 and will get my ICC from this as well. Highly recommended

This weekend just completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course at Bristol Maritime Academy. Excellent Venue using both Bristol Floating Dock Area (protected area) and then the Bristol Channel (not so protected!!!! - including today's, rain, hail stones and very high winds!). 2 Boats provided opportunity to swap boats, different sizes and different handling needed; course was well structured with classroom work, but a lot of water time. Chief Instructor Lilly is quite simply exceptional; excellent training style, provides really clear instruction, very supportive, firm hand when needed!, all with an energetic, bubbly personality. Instructor Charlie very good, good presentational skills, very confident and competent; patient and guidance as required. Used many RYA Training Schools in last 5 years for Sailing, Dinghy Training and now Powerboat - would really recommend Bristol Maritime Academy - I will certainly be back for more. Andy

Fantastic place to do your level two powerboat training. Knowledgeable instructors who make it fun to learn, and a location that would be hard to better; harbour for slow boat manoeuvres and the Bristol Channel for higher speed turns and wave technique. Feel very confident about taking a speed boat out now. Thanks guys.

Powerboat Level 2 Course

Learn to drive a powerboat in just 2 days!

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to to become a competent powerboat driver by day in familiar waters and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

This course can also be the first step on your journey to working commercially in the marine business.

Come join the fun!

  • Course Content
  • Previous Experience
  • Course Timings
  • Minimum Age
  • Student Ratios
  • Course Materials

The course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. You’ll learn how to safely helm and crew the boat as well as getting an introduction to marine navigation.

We aim to maximize the time you spend afloat and minimize the classroom time.

At low speed you will safely bring the boat alongside a pontoon and learn to turn the boat in a confined space as well as heading out into the Beauly/Inverness Firth to conduct the planing speed manoeuvres of S turns, U turns and figure of eight, picking up a buoy and the crucial skill of MOB recovery.

The Level 2 course is ideal for:

  • Those new to boating who want to develop their base skills and,
  • Those who have some experience but who want to develop their skills and ensure they are approaching their boating the right way.
  • Those looking to hire a boat abroad and who require an ICC.
  • Those looking to operate commercially up to 3nm from a nominated departure point (NDP). (for more information on commercial endorsements see: What certificates/licences do you need to work commercially with Motor / Powerboats?

No prior boating experience is necessary.

The course equally suits those new to boating and those who have been boating for years.

Most people take Level 2 and bypass Level 1.

You do not need to already have Level 1 before you take Level 2.

9am-5pm each day with approximately 45 mins for lunch

Minimum Duration: 2 days

Minimum age 12 years old.

We are generally happy for a child over 12 to attend a course with a paying parent/guardian on our boats at any time – please call to discuss.

An International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is often considered as the international ‘boat driving licence’. It is usually required by countries/operators if you wish to use your own craft abroad or to charter one and we’re offering 10% off our June 2016 course dates. The RYA powerboat level 2 is the basic level course allowing you to rent a boat abroad once you have obtained your ICC boat handling license (International Certificate of Competence). You can find out more about the ICC  here

Inland – To obtain the ‘Inland endorsement’ you need to undertake an additional short online test – the ‘CEVNI’ test see  here  for more details.

Your ICC is valid for 5 years.

Applying for your first ICC: To obtain an ICC, you must complete an  ICC application form  in full and sign the declaration. Women powerboat instructors in the Midlands gear up for summer season

Six women standing by a RIB on a sunny day who passed their RYA Powerboat Instructor qualification as part of the RYA Midlands aspiring female instructors programme.

An RYA Midlands programme designed to build skills and break down barriers for women has seen its latest group of aspiring powerboat instructors qualifying in time for the summer season.

The initiative provides on-water sessions to help women develop their confidence and knowledge in preparation for taking the RYA Powerboat Instructor course.

Six participants – taking the total to 12 over the last two years - have now qualified as instructors, enabling them in turn to help more people gain RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificates to support activities at their clubs and centres.

Programme coordinator and RYA Midlands Sailing Developer Sallie Bowd said: “Women often feel overlooked or that men take the lead in powerboating, and the upskilling days are designed to give them time on the water and the confidence to do an RYA Powerboat Instructor course.

“It enables them to form friendships and go through the pathway together, so they feel empowered to ask questions and practise their boat handling, without any concerns about what people might think, in a supportive and encouraging learning environment.”

Participants attended one or more days on the water over winter to build on their existing RYA Powerboat Level 2 skills ahead of a pre-assessment day and then taking the RYA Powerboat Instructor course.

Among those who qualified with the most recent cohort was Chloe Kinsella, an RYA Dinghy Sailing Trainer who works at clubs and centres across the Midlands.

Chloe said: “I’m used to going on courses with a group of men and although I’ve been doing powerboating for a long time, I’ve always really been a sailor, so I wanted to enhance and broaden my skills with likeminded people with similar experience.

“There’s definitely a different atmosphere with a group of all-women. It feels less judgemental when something doesn’t go according to plan, which makes it less nerve-racking. Everyone was keen to praise and help each other and press each other forward. It was a case of ‘let’s help you make that better’, so we were all enhancing each other’s experience. Everyone was in it for everyone!”

Three women on shore and waiting to get in a powerboat and two on the water in a grey RIB getting ready to go.

Opportunities

Also qualifying as an RYA Powerboat Instructor was Sarah Peel, Centre Manager at Carsington Sports & Leisure, who said: “I was a powerboat instructor in the late 1990s but my qualification lapsed as I moved into a senior role and found I was spending more time in the office.

“I’ve spent 30 years in the industry and I’m used to working in a male dominated environment, so I joined the programme because it was too good an opportunity to miss rather than because it was a women’s initiative, but actually it was really enjoyable to be part of an all-female group.

“We all supported each other along the way and we were all in it together, with a nice atmosphere in which people were comfortable to share things, and it was very much a team effort. We all wanted each other to pass the course – and we did!

“As a full-time working mum, the programme also made it achievable. It was broken down into steps which made it possible for me to get on the water and regain my confidence. It was very much about ‘let’s make this manageable’ so we could fit it in around busy lives.

“Now I’m a qualified instructor again, I can train staff and our younger support crew to get their RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, which supports what we do and is a reward for them and opens doors for young people to other opportunities and qualifications.”

Half a dozen women gathered around a grey RIB and in instructor on shore as part of an RYA Powerboat Instructor Course.

RYA Midlands also recently hosted a free Women on Water Development Day at Burton Sailing Club, providing a welcoming space to develop sailing skills on the water and explore pathways into dinghy instructing and race coaching.

RYA Midlands Regional Manager Ben Hodgson said: “Our projects in the Midlands are a really good way to encourage women who may not otherwise come forward, providing additional resources for clubs and centres and also female role models for the future.”

The aim is to now host further Women on Water days and continue the powerboat programme to get a new group course-ready to qualify for the 2025 season.

Registration is open for two RYA Midlands upskilling days this autumn for aspiring female powerboat instructors:

  • Saturday 12th September at Draycote Water Sailing Club
  • Saturday 28th September at Carsington Sports and Leisure

Book your place and for further information about these or the women’s development days, please do feel free to  get in touch to find out more or register your interest.
