Westport 130

130 foot yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/112005/fea_westport_525x297.jpg

At a recent boat show, I joined an acquaintance and his captain as they toured a Westport 112-foot motoryacht. It was one of the yachts on the short list for a planned move up from a 74-foot production yacht. From 74 to 112 can be quite a step in cost, complexity and complications, and I’ve seen more than a few owners reconsider such a significant upgrade after fully evaluating the pros and cons. In this case, though, I was struck by the owner’s immediate comfort level with the bigger vessel. The Westport 112 was much larger, to be sure, but it did not overwhelm him. He could visualize his family and friends aboard, enjoying the extra space without having to change their lifestyle.

A Westport 130-footer was moored alongside, so we took in that yacht as well, and I found the reaction of my acquaintance and his captain interesting. Not only was the step from 74 feet to 112 something they considered quite doable, but they both speculated on moving to the 130 after a few years with the 112. That, in a nutshell, is the story of another owner, an American who recently took delivery of Seaquest, the latest 130-foot motoryacht from Westport Shipyard, after a previous move into a Westport 112 from a string of earlier yachts. Further easing the owner’s transition was the fact that his 112 was sold within two weeks of becoming available on the very competitive brokerage market.

Seaquest brings to an even dozen the number of 130-footers Westport has delivered. The yard is having a record year, with six deliveries to date and four more scheduled before year’s end from its line of 98-, 112- and 130-foot semi-production yachts. The two smaller models are raised-pilothouse configurations, whereas the flagship 130 is a full trideck.

Yachts are evolutionary products. Each new build benefits from the experience her designer and builder have gained from prior yachts, and in the case of Seaquest, the benefit is considerable. Her naval architect is Bill Garden, whose portfolio is bulging with both sailboats and powercraft of considerable renown. You need only one glance at Seaquest under way to know that her hull form is an especially efficient one. The narrow angle of her bow cuts the water cleanly with a noticeable lack of fuss, and her wake is as minimal as possible given her size and displacement.

It’s something Garden honed to perfection on years of sailing-hull designs and brings to his motoryacht designs with aplomb. The fine lines forward mean the crew quarters are pushed aft a bit farther than normal, putting the guest accommodations near the yacht’s center of pitch for added guest comfort. It also results in the deep fuel tanks, which separate the engine room’s noise and heat from the guest staterooms, sitting near the hull’s longitudinal center of flotation, so trim will change very little as fuel is burned off. The fuel tanks are aluminum, as are the water tanks. The latter are epoxy coated inside for corrosion protection, and the holding tanks are constructed of fiberglass for the same reason.

Seaquest’s styling and arrangement are from the board of Greg Marshall, like Garden a veteran designer in the Pacific Northwest. To achieve the economic benefits of semi-production in large yachts that are more often custom built, a designer must stick to what has proven to be most popular with owners. Marshall’s design of the Westport 130 could serve as an archetype for the genre.

The arrangement has four en suite guest staterooms below deck, two with twin berths and two VIPs with queens. Crew quarters are forward, with an engineer’s cabin aft adjacent to the engine room. An engineer’s control room is built into the forward end of the engine room, and the engine room and its twin MTU 12V4000s are accessible via a protected stair from the aft deck as well as through a transom door for use in port or at anchor.

The master suite is situated forward on the main deck. In addition to the sleeping quarters, with a California king berth, there’s a his-and-hers bath with both a large shower and a spacious whirlpool tub. A huge walk-in locker sits just aft to starboard, leaving plenty of space in the main room for an attractive desk/vanity and settee.

Seaquest’s main entry foyer is to starboard and includes a day head, convenient for arriving guests, yet separated slightly from the dining area and saloon. The galley, to port of the foyer, has a generously sized dinette for informal guest dining; a separate crew lounge is located below. The dining area is divided from the saloon by low cabinets and a pair of columns, creating a sense of separation while retaining the feeling of one large room.

Abaft the saloon is a quintessential after deck, with a dining table, bar, transom seating and twin stairs to the swim platform. There’s also a spiral stair to the after end of the bridge deck, where a 17-foot Novurania tender rests, ready for davit launch. A spa and outside seating adjoin the tender stowage area aft, and forward, the Portuguese bridge is split by a central walkway to the foredeck where there’s a spacious circular guest lounge. Amidships is the pilothouse and upper deck lounge, with another bar and day head. Wing controls are fitted outboard of the pilothouse so the flying-bridge deck can be fully devoted to guest lounges and tables.

With a foundation of excellent designs from Garden and Marshall, Westport takes the evolution of Seaquest to fruition in fiberglass. Both the hull and superstructure are of composite construction, with blister-resistant gelcoat on the hull bottom and Awlgrip polyurethane above the waterline. Airex foam core is used to develop the necessary panel stiffness without carrying excess structural weight, and the hull stringers are cored as well. The standard equipment list is extensive and of first quality, with such items as Pool anchors, Freeman hardware, Maxwell windlasses and capstans and Northern Lights generators. Engines are fitted atop the fiberglass stringers with resilient mounts to reduce noise and vibration. Auxiliary machinery is likewise soft-mounted, and considerable attention is paid to placement of insulation for further sound reduction throughout the accommodations. Delivery is nearly turnkey, with everything from dinnerware to docklines included.

In addition to the three yacht models it is currently offering, Westport has a rich history of vessel construction. In the 41 years since the company’s founding in 1964, it has built over 50 complete yachts, 79 bare hulls for other builders, 170 commercial fishing boats and 35 commercial passenger vessels. The company has expanded from its original shipyard in Westport, Washington, taking in three additional facilities around the state for a total of 347,000 enclosed square feet, with over 500 employees.

Westport has recently begun construction of its most ambitious project to date, a 164-foot motoryacht. The yacht was jointly designed by Donald Starkey and Westport personnel, and will feature a six-stateroom layout. There are four staterooms below deck, a master suite on the main deck and a VIP suite on the upper deck.

+ Vessel Walkthrough

The foyer will lead you aft to the spacious Main Salon and formal dining area. Looking all the way aft on the port side there is a game table with four upholstered chairs. Moving forward, one finds two comfortable chenille covered sofas on both sides facing each other creating a casual conversation area. A 40-inch PAL/NTSC LCD Flat Screen TV hidden in a cherry wood buffet with granite top (raised and lowered by remote) separates the Salon from the dining area, where the dining table can accommodate 10 guests.

Forward to port is the Galley with plenty of storage and black granite countertops, nicely appointed with stainless steel professional appliances including a six-burner stove with pop up vent. The U-shaped dinette nook has ample seating and is perfect for a casual breakfast or lunch.

Moving forward to the on-deck Master Stateroom you’ll find a centerline king-sized bed. The master bathroom has a whirlpool bath, a glass enclosed shower, his and her vanities and Crema Marfil marble tile.

Aft of the Master are mid-ship stairs that lead down to the four Guest Staterooms, each with ensuite head and enclosed shower. There are Two (2) king berths and two (2) twin berth staterooms.

Mid ship stairs lead you back up and forward to the Pilothouse where there is semi-circular seating for guests to enjoy the view while cruising.  Aft to the Sky Lounge is a complete entertainment center including a 42-inch flat screen TV, wet bar, game table, and large windows offering a panoramic view.

Yachtsman Jim Glidewell and 130 Westport Motor Yacht Serengeti

Posted October 1, 2014 in Charter by Janine St.Denis

A true yachtsman at heart, Jim Glidewell has owned many vessels, but the head-turning M/Y SERENGETI has a special place in his heart.

Glidewell’s 130-foot Westport, built in 2002 was previously called MARY ALICE II, but she was originally named SERENGETI by a Hollywood legend. In homage to her original owner, when Glidewell purchased the yacht, he reverted the name to SERENGETI, but also because “it’s bad luck to change the name of a boat,” he proclaims.

But let’s start at the beginning. In 1987, Glidewell purchased his first vessel, a 50-foot boat, which grew into a 63-foot Sea Ray, which lead him to an 84-foot Sunseeker. He then purchased a 95-foot Heesen dubbed VOYAGER. The next yacht was a 120-foot Broward called SOVEREIGN and from there, a 122-foot Flagship named SHOGUN. The culmination was a 154-foot Admiral named OHANA. The Glidewell family loved OHANA, but because his children were so young, the vessel did not receive as much use as she deserved, and she was destined for a sale.

Now, Glidewell proudly owns M/Y SERENGETI, which lives on the west coast of the Americas, chartering the Pacific from Mexico to Alaska. While SERENGETI is on the seas, Glidewell also owns a “back up” yacht in Newport Beach, an 82-foot Hatteras sportfish.

The 69-year-old yachtsman has lived on the West Coast his whole life. Glidewell was born in Las Vegas, moved to California for college and never looked back. Now living in Newport Beach with his wife and four children, Glidewell gets quite a bit of use out of SERENGETI.

“I mainly have boats for the kids,” says Glidewell. “It’s exciting sharing different ports of call with them.” His children range in age from four to 10. From June to September, SERENGETI is based in Juneau, Alaska, where she charters if the Glidewell’s aren’t on board. From October to May, the vessel lives in Newport Beach, California, occasionally heading south to La Paz or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. “I love the balance of the Westport,” says Glidewell. “All of the systems work perfectly. We can run at 29 knots and cruise comfortably at 22. There are five staterooms, which work well for my family and, since I have an office in Newport, we use the vessel for company events. We have cocktail parties on board, and we’ve even taken her out to Catalina for weekends.”

A native to the area, Glidewell favors the U.S. and Mexican west coast. “I’ve been a pilot for 30 years and I used to fly to the west coast of Mexico often and stay in hotels, but now I can fly in and stay on my yacht, which I much prefer.” Other favorite yachting hubs for Glidewell are Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. He also loves The Bahamas, “I like it there better than the Caribbean islands.” Glidewell hasn’t spent time aboard yachts in the Mediterranean, but he has traversed the Panama Canal aboard three times.

serengeti-westport-130-ohana-exumas-navigator-1

One of his favorite yachting memories happened on M/Y SERENGETI quite recently. Glidewell brought the yacht and 20 guests to The Bahamas to attend the ShowBoats International Boys & Girls Clubs Rendezvous at the Atlantis resort. After the event, they cruised to the Exumas, in The Bahamas, for a double hook-up with Glidewell’s east-coast-based yacht M/Y OHANA. As many yachts only can host up to 12 guests, the double hook-up worked well for Glidewell, and “the critical mass of 20 people made the whole trip more enjoyable,” he says.

When it’s just the family on board, one of Glidewell’s favorite pastimes is fishing with his children. “Most people say they fish,” he laughs, “we catch.” Captain Mike Finnegan has been with Glidewell for five years, previously working as captain of SHOGUN, and he is an avid fisherman. “We catch everything from Dungeness crab to salmon, halibut, cod, and what we catch goes on the menu,” Glidewell smiles.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

To learn more about each crew position in detail, including salary ranges, please visit our yacht department directory .

Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.

This sunburst diagram is interactive. You can click into each block to see the expense break down and mouse over each block for more details.

Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊
