Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

So much of the fun of working in this business is the excitement leading up to a trade show like Watches & Wonders. We love to predict, to anticipate. And we do – and I did. If you read our predictions post ahead of the show you'll see a lead image of a solid gold GMT-Master II on a jubilee bracelet. Until 8:30 AM CEST, that watch didn't actually exist…and now it does. No, I didn't manifest it, but it is still cool to have (maybe for the only time) gotten something close to right.

And, to be honest, a solid yellow gold GMT and a Rolesor (steel and yellow gold two-tone) GMT are not necessarily surprising watches. In fact, they are watches you would just assume are already in the Rolex collection because they should always be in the Rolex collection. And yet, they were not. For the past few years, if you wanted precious metal with your GMT, you were looking at Everose gold.

Rolex GMT

But that watch only comes on an Oyster bracelet (solid gold or two-tone). So that's really the story with this new release today: Rolex finally makes a precious metal GMT with a Jubilee bracelet and it's HOT. I thought it was hot when I saw the announcement online, and my hands were practically on fire when I held it in real life this afternoon.

Rolex GMT-Master

It's exactly what you expect from a Rolex GMT-Master in yellow gold, and that's why I like it so much. It would have been easy for the brand to have overcomplicated this – adding too many touches of green, doing some out there bi-color bezel combo. Instead, the designers decided to keep it simple, and what we have is a handsome addition to the lineup.

The TL;DR of this watch is the YG material and the bi-color black and grey bezel (this being the first use of grey on a bezel insert from Rolex). And that's sort of it. The most surprising part about it is that bi-color bezel, which is imperceptible in certain lighting conditions. And though I may have been more partial to an all-black bezel, I am not complaining about this release one bit.

Rolex GMT

The watch has all the heft you want in the solid gold variation and feels pleasantly light and wearable in two-tone though that may just be relative to the weight of the all-gold. In the end, it's a watch that lacks the splashiness of an emoji Day-Date but makes up for it with miles of pitch-perfect simplicity in both versions.

Rolex GMT

Every time I thought my preference was for the all-gold, I would spot the two-tone on the other end of the table and ask to see it a second and third time. It's the sort of combo of watches where there's no wrong choice (just a vast difference in price with the two-tone costing CHF 15,700, and the all-gold, CHF 37,100. Don't tempt me with a good time.

OYSTER PERPETUAL GMT-MASTER II

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

HIGHLIGHTING OUR CONNECTION TO THE WORLD

The GMT-Master II is available this year in two new versions – yellow Rolesor and 18 ct yellow gold – with a Cerachrom bezel insert in grey and black ceramic, an entirely new colour combination.

Rolex introduces two new versions of the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II that signal the return of 18 ct yellow gold to the model. The first is a yellow Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and yellow gold), whereas the second is crafted entirely in this precious metal.

Both share common features. Firstly a two-colour, 24-hour graduated monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in grey – a new shade – and black ceramic. On the dial, the name ‘GMT-Master II’ is in a powdered yellow colour. These new versions are fitted on a Jubilee bracelet, equipped with an Oysterlock clasp and the Easylink comfort extension link.

The new versions of the GMT-Master II are driven by calibre 3285, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date and an additional time zone in 24-hour format, as well as the hours, minutes and seconds.

Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

ONE INSTRUMENT, SEVERAL TIME ZONES Designed as a navigation aid for professionals criss-crossing the globe, over time the GMT-Master became the watch of choice for travellers. It has a unique and instantly recognizable design with a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated insert, which has been made available in various dual-colour combinations – the lower half symbolizing daytime hours and the upper signalling nighttime hours – as well as in single-colour versions. The GMT-Master, a true ‘tool watch’, evolved continually to offer increasing technical performance. In 1982, Rolex unveiled the GMT-Master II, with a movement that allowed the hour hand to be set independently of the other hands.

With traditional hour, minute and seconds hands, a triangle-tipped 24-hour hand, and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, the GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and the reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone. The date is synchronized with the local time.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts. Not only are these materials virtually scratchproof, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. Rolex has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components.

On the new versions of the GMT-Master II, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a two-colour, 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert in grey and black ceramic. The moulded, recessed graduations and numerals are coated with yellow gold via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). The bezel can also be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge, which offers excellent grip.

ROLESOR, A MARRIAGE OF GOLD AND STEEL Rolesor, the combination of gold and Oystersteel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is a meeting of two metals: one, noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability; the other, highly resistant to corrosion, assuring strength and reliability. All of these qualities mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch.

On the new GMT-Master II offered in the yellow Rolesor version, the bezel, winding crown and bracelet centre links are in yellow gold; the middle case, case back and bracelet outer links are in Oystersteel.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 40 mm Oyster case of the new versions of the GMT-Master II is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case of these versions is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel or 18 ct yellow gold. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3285 The new versions of the GMT-Master II are equipped with calibre 3285, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2018 and introduced on the model the same year. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.

Calibre 3285 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel- phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing.

Calibre 3285 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3285 extends to approximately 70 hours.

JUBILEE BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP The new versions of the GMT-Master II are fitted on a Jubilee bracelet. Supple and comfortable, this five-piece link bracelet was specially created for the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, which was launched in 1945. The Jubilee bracelet of these new versions features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. On the version entirely in 18 ct yellow gold, the bracelet also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.

The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

Hands On: Rolex GMT-Master II Oystersteel Ref. 126710GRNR

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

Just released at Watches & Wonders 2024, the Rolex GMT-Master II in steel with a grey and black bezel (ref. 126710GRNR) is the newest addition to the famous line of dual time zone watches. More restrained in terms of colour, the new GMT-Master sports a 24-hour bezel with a grey-and-black Cerachrom insert. It’s still immediately recognisable, but a bit more discreet than its siblings in the collection, especially the famous “Pepsi” that is perhaps too recognisable.

Like several other Rolex sports models, the 126710GRNR sports green accents on the dial and GMT hand. And the 126710GRNR  is available on either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

Initial thoughts

The GMT-Master II is a almost perfect, with little that needs revision.  While some expected a “Coke” GMT this year, the 126710GRNR is a solid proposition for anyone who wants a GMT-Master dressed more subtly. The bi-colour bezel is functional without being too loud unlike the better-known GMT-Master “Pepsi” .  Flashy or recognisable watches sometimes attract unwanted attention, so dialling back the bezel colours is smart.

In fact, the 126710GRNR may as well be more appealing than the discontinued 116710LN with its all-black bezel. Although I prefer the all-black bezel of the 116710LN, the grey and black bezel of the 126710GRNR is more functional as it separates day and night.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

The Rolex GMT-Master II “Pepsi” 126710BLRO

The green accents are a nice touch and also logical since green is the Rolex corporate colour. Although not overly apparent in photos, the green markings on the dial stand out in person and add colour to an otherwise monochromatic watch.

On the other hand, the grey and black bezel is subtle. In fact, it can appear entirely black under certain lighting. Even when the two distinct colours are visible, the bezel almost blends into the watch.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

The green accents stand out

Like most other current sports models, the 126710GRNR sports the “maxi” case, which isn’t too big but can feel chunky. That said, the case is relatively thin for what it is.

The Rolex GMT-Master II 126710GRNR retails for US$10,700 on an Oyster bracelet and US$10,900 on the Jubilee. The pricing is typical Rolex, which is reasonable considering the quality of build, in-house movement, and not to mention the value of the brand. As a result, the GMT-Master II is a great value proposition, especially relative to its competition. The only downside, as is the case with many other Rolex models, is availability.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

Grey and black

The highlight of the 126710GRNR is the grey and black 24-hour bezel insert in Cerachrom, the Rolex trade name for ceramic. “GRNR” is short for gris noir , or “grey black”, which is the same bezel insert found on the yellow-gold model introduced last year.

The colour separation on the bezel is impressively tidy; it seamlessly transitions from black to grey at three and nine o’clock without any bleeding. As is now standard for Rolex bezels, the markings are engraved and then plated via physical vapour deposition with precious metal, in this case platinum. Unlike bezel inserts on historical models like the ref. 1675 that were anodised aluminium, the ceramic insert is both scratch and fade resistant.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

The GMT function is intuitive and practical. The engraved 24-hour scale and green GMT hand indicate the time in a second time zone, which is usually home time. Because this is a “true” GMT watch with a movement constructed from the ground up to show two time zones, the local time hour hand can be independently adjusted and the date moves in sync with the local time hand.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

“Maxi”

Bezel aside, the 126710GRNR is identical to other variants of the GMT-Master II. It has a “maxi” case that’s 40 mm wide and 11.9 mm high. Though the measurements are relatively compact, the wide and substantial lugs give it a chunky appearance. That said, taper of the bracelet, which goes from 20 mm on the lugs to 15.5 mm on the clasp, moderate the perceived size.

The case is finished in the conventional manner with brushing on the top and mirror polishing on the sides. The surfaces of the case and bracelet are precisely finished, with the mirror polished sides being impressively flat. This is thanks to a new polishing technique Rolex implemented several years ago, which has results in case finishing that is comparable to the famous “Zaratsu” flat-polishing method employed by Grand Seiko.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

While both the Jubilee and Oyster bracelets are finished to the same level, the Jubilee is a little flashier due to its trio of polished centre links. Because it has polished centre links regardless of bracelet type, the GMT-Master in general is a bit louder than the Submariner, which is entirely brushed.

Both the Oyster and the Jubilee bracelets are impressively constructed, managing to be both solid and supple at the same time. The Oysterlock clasp with its built-in Easylink micro-adjustment mechanism is equally solid and also very useful. Arguably the only downside of the bracelet is the relatively long blade of the clasp, which makes it less ergonomic for very small wrists.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

Finished with a glossy black lacquer, the dial is similarly “maxi” with large hour markers and wide hands. Legibility is excellent, including for the date that is magnified by the signature Rolex Cyclops lens

Like other current GMT-Master II variants, the 126710GRNR is powered by the cal. 3285. It’s a latest-generation movement that’s equipped with the magnetism-resistant blue Parachrom hairspring and patented, high-efficiency Chronergy escapement. It has a useful 70 hours of power reserve and beats at 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz).

In the usual Rolex fashion, the cal. 3285 is constructed to be a robust and durable timekeeper. For stability, it has a full bridge for the balance, which is free sprung.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

The cal. 3285. Image – Rolex

Concluding thoughts

The 126710GRNR is perhaps the most useful variant of the GMT-Master II since it is the most low key. While it’s still instantly recognisable as a GMT-Master, it does away with the bright colours that define the other versions of the model. At the same time, the grey-and-black bezel isn’t as plain as the discontinued version with the all-black bezel.

Rolex Jubilee Bracelet: Complete Guide

Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR

The bracelet on which a watch is on actually plays an important role in how the watch looks and wears.

Over the years, Rolex has made some designs of watches that have become true icons, but over time, Rolex’s bracelets have also come to become loved, iconic, and appreciated watch bracelet thanks to their design, comfort, and look.

In this article, we will focus on the Rolex Jubilee bracelet. Because just like with their watches, Rolex has continuously improved, redesigned, and refined its bracelet in order to be more reliable, more robust, and ultimately, ” perpetual ”.

This goes in line with Rolex as a brand of always trying to perfect and improve. Remember, Rolex is not about revolution, but evolution. This is why the Jubilee bracelet from Rolex today is so much more reliable and robust compared to when it was first launched.

Rolex Jubilee Oyster clasp

Rolex jubilee bracelet: History and background

The Rolex Jubilee bracelet was first launched in 1945. As the name suggests, it was released to celebrate a jubilee. More specifically, in celebration of Rolex’s 40th anniversary. Originally, the Jubilee bracelet was specifically designed for the Datejust line, but as you know, that is not the case today.

Over the years, the Jubilee bracelet has been improved and refined, but in its design, it remains largely unchanged throughout the years. Initially, the Jubilee bracelet was only available in solid gold but eventually came to become offered in two-tone and steel variants. The reason for this is that the President bracelet stepped up and took this place as Rolex’s premier bracelet option when it was released in the 1950s. Today, the Jubilee bracelet is made in all metals except full gold and platinum.

Further on, the Jubilee bracelet was also offered on some of Rolex’s Professional models such as the GMT-Master. This has now come full swing, as Rolex, after a break, now offers professional watches with the Jubilee bracelet. More specifically some of the references in the GMT-Master II range.

Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLNR

Each Rolex bracelet has its purpose and amongst the options of bracelets, the Jubilee bracelet is a mixture between the Oyster and President bracelet. It is less sporty and more elegant than the Oyster bracelet, but it is also less dressy than the President bracelet.

Over the years, the Jubilee bracelet has been used for a wide variety of watches, but technically, it has always remained the same. Equally so in terms of looks, it still stays very true to the original design. This goes to show just how timeless the Jubilee bracelet design truly is.

Rolex Jubilee bracelet design

The Jubilee bracelet has a five-piece, semi-circular link design, which appears more luxurious and elegant than the Oyster because of having 5 links instead of 3. The increased number of links also means that the Jubilee bracelet catches the light beautifully and almost looks like a piece of jewelry in itself.

Rolex Jubilee bracelet

This design has come to become so iconic that it is a bracelet that you immediately associate with Rolex.

The three middle links on the Jubilee bracelet are polished, and the links on each side are brushed. The sides of the bracelet are polished, and the inside is brushed. The Jubilee bracelet links are flat on the inside, which makes the bracelet sit more snug against the wrist which really is a great design feature.

Rolex Jubilee bracelet reference numbers

Over the years, Rolex has released a number of different Jubilee bracelet references. Each new reference means a new revised and refined bracelet in one way or another. Some updates are more notable than others.

Something that has changed several times over the years is the clasp of the Jubilee bracelet.

Most notable of the Jubilee bracelets are the 7xxx and the 9xxx series with a dozen of end links to match.

The Rolex Jubilee 6251H was the bracelet of choice for the vintage Rolex GMT from its very early beginnings.

Furthermore, the Rolex Jubilee was an option offered on the early Rolex Daytona watches as it could accommodate both the 20mm for the GMT and the 19mm flush fit for the Daytona.

Originally, the first Jubilee bracelet in full gold featured an exposed, flat clasp with the Rolex crown at the top. Following, Rolex changed to smaller, larger, more modern, hidden, and now, the Oyster clasp.

Now, here are some of the reference numbers of the Jubilee bracelets:

  • 62523H Jubilee bracelet
  • 63600 Rolex Super Jubilee. Hidden crown clasp. Fits many sports models such as 16710BLNR.
  • 6251H The 6251H is the older, less robust version of the Jubilee reference 62510H. This is because the links are folded, unlike the 62510H which has solid links.
  • 6252h. Released in the 1960s.

The H at the end of the reference numbers stands for ” Homme ”, as in men.

In 2018 came a huge change to the Jubilee bracelet. Rolex originally offered the GMT-Master on Jubilee or Oyster bracelet, but eventually, Rolex removed the option of Jubilee bracelet for their steel sports models

However, in 2018, Rolex released their latest GMT-Master II in steel with a Pepsi bezel and Jubilee bracelet. Then in 2019, Rolex came to introduce yet another version of the new steel GMT-Master II on the Jubilee; the black and blue bezel version aka the Batman reference 126710BLNR.

With this launch, Rolex also stated that from now on, the GMT-Master II in steel will be  only  available with a jubilee bracelet.

Not only is this a major introduction to use the Jubilee bracelet for sports models, but it also goes to show that the Jubilee bracelet, while timeless, is very much in fashion right now.

Rolex Jubilee bracelet stretch

Probably the most notable issue with Rolex Jubilee bracelets is the immense stretch that they develop over time. This is particularly true for the earliest Jubilee bracelets. Over time, because of wear, the earlier Jubilee bracelets get a lot of stretch, even to the point where you hold the watch’s head on the side, the bracelet does almost a 90-degree turn.

Here is an example of what we mean:

Rolex Jubilee Bracelet: Complete Guide

Photo: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=446594

When a bracelet gets this type of stretch, it not only becomes uncomfortable on the wrist, but the watch slides around on the wrist and doesn’t sit steady. But it is also a danger, as more stretch means even more wear, tear, and stress on the bracelet, which ultimately can mean that it will break. Now, all bracelets will get stretched over time when used, but depending on how they are built, they may get more or less stretch.

As written on Rolexforums:

”The “stretch” isn’t metal bending or weakening, it’s due to friction when the bracelet link pins rotate inside and wear the holes. The more the links move, the more they wear and looser they become. The result is an apparent “stretch”. Wearing your bracelet tight will reduce the movement of the links and reduce the rate of wear compared with if you wear your bracelet loose. Loose-wearing = accelerated wear/stretch.”

The stretch also has to do with dirt, grime, and such being abrasive and wearing the bracelet pins and links where they make contact. This is why, in particular, if you have an older Jubilee bracelet, it is a good idea to clean it with a toothbrush, soap, and warm water.

Note that Rolex does not fix the stretch of a bracelet if you send it in for repair. Instead, they will replace the bracelet.

Now, of course, Rolex has acknowledged this issue, since their goal is to manufacture watches and accessories that will last for generations. But as a matter of fact, the older Jubilee bracelets will barely last for one generation if used regularly. The reason why the earlier Jubilee bracelets got so much stretch is that they did not use solid links, similar to the Oyster bracelets of the time. Instead, the links are folded. The folded links do not provide the same robustness and resistance to wear as solid links.

Rolex Jubilee Bracelet: Complete Guide

Not only are the links folded, but the middle-link structure only consists of two metal ”rings”, which, as you can see in the image, are not very sturdy and robust.

The first step to making more robust Jubilee bracelets is introducing solid links, and this, of course, Rolex has done.

So, what has Rolex done about this issue?

Well, it’s safe to say that the issue with stretch on the Jubilee bracelets has become better and better with each new reference that Rolex has released. One of the major updates to the Jubilee bracelet is when they introduced solid links.

Rolex Jubilee Bracelet: Complete Guide

Another huge update to the most modern Jubilee bracelets is one that not everyone is aware of, and that is that Rolex has implemented ceramic into its links to minimize stretch. It’s something that most people will never find out, but which have a huge effect on the technical functionality of the bracelet and minimizing stretch.

Rolex Oyster bracelet VS Jubilee

This is an interesting comparison, and really, there’s no right or wrong here.

Some people just prefer the sportiness of the Oyster bracelet above the classiness of the Jubilee bracelet, or the other way around.

There’s no denying that the Oyster bracelet is far sportier and more robust than the Jubilee bracelet, so it depends on if you are more towards the dressier, or more towards the sportier side of things.

Both bracelets are of course finished to perfection and have a high feel of quality to them. Prior to the release of the GMT, the Jubilee bracelet was mainly seen as a classy dressier bracelet. But now that it is used on multiple steel sports watches, this perception has changed slightly.

Now, the Jubilee bracelet has proven that it is a perfect all-around bracelet that works all around. The Oyster bracelet, on the other hand, is not perceived as elegant, which makes it less suitable for more dressed-up occasions. Even though, of course, the Submariner, for example, has proven to work with a suit exceptionally well.

At the end of the day, it comes down to preference. Both the Jubilee and Oyster are great bracelets and really comfortable to wear.

Just like Rolex’s watches, the Jubilee bracelet has gotten an iconic place in history and in the world of watch bracelets. And like all of Rolex’s products, it has been iterated, improved, and refined, over the years, in order to be able to offer superior reliability and quality.

Today, the Jubilee bracelet is one of Rolex’s most popular bracelets which finds its way into more and more models from Rolex.

The fact that it was released in 1945 proves that, just like many of Rolex’s watches, they pass the test of time as truly timeless classics.

Staying on course

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 in Oystersteel and platinum with an Oyster bracelet.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Exceptional legibility

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

A legendary combination

Many Rolex watches are available with the now-legendary combination of yellow, white or Everose gold and steel known as Rolesor, but Rolesium is a creation specific to the Yacht-Master.

While the case and bracelet are in rugged Oystersteel, the bezel of the Rolesium versions is made of platinum, imparting a silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity for an unmistakable sense of luxury.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

The Rolex GMT-Master II Steel & Yellow Gold 126713GRNR, And Why I Fell For It

I shouldn't like this watch... but i actually do..

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Of course, there were some more important new models presented by Rolex at Watches and Wonders 2023. The updated Daytona , moving to a 12xxxx generation, the titanium Yacht-Master 42 or a new dress watch, the convincing Perpetual 1908 . Nevertheless, a pair of new models – to make it clear, colour and material updates on an existing watch – managed to get quite some traction. I’m talking about new yellow gold-equipped GMT-Master II watches , and specifically the Steel and Yellow Gold (call it two-tone or yellow Rolesor) reference 126713GRNR. At first, this watch should be everything I don’t like… But life is sometimes surprising.

Rolex GMT-Master Yellow Rolesor 116713LN

Above: the 116713LN and 116718LN, models discontinued circa 2019, equipped with yellow gold case/bracelet, or yellow Rolesor case/bracelet – images by www.watchclub.com

Before I go up close and personal with the 126713GRNR (reference numbers are going more and more complex at Rolex…) we first need to recap the facts, and look at this new two-tone steel and yellow gold GMT-Master II for what it is. First of all, next to the full yellow gold version (reference 126718GRNR), this new model marks the return of yellow gold in the collection. Indeed, since the discontinuation of the solid yellow gold models – 116718LN green or black dial – and the two-tone yellow Rolesor – 116713LN – a few years ago, your only option for precious metal GMTs were Everose (solid or matched with steel ), or white gold . And, also important, they all come on an Oyster bracelet.

rolex yacht master 2 jubilee

These two new models feel actually very much like no-brainers, like unsurprising, totally expected models. Why? Because it feels natural to have Yellow Rolesor or solid yellow gold models in the collection. The watches you assume exist… but actually didn’t, at least for some years (from 2019 to 2023). So what’s the deal in 2023? Well, first of all, yellow gold, as a stand-alone material or combined with steel, returns to the Rolex GMT collection. Second, there’s a new two-tone bezel, in an unprecedented colour combination. Third, there’s a Jubilee bracelet in precious metal on the GMT, which is not only new but also hot. Last, I hate to say it, but they look very attractive. And I believe that it’s quite a general consensus here.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Today, I’ve decided to specifically look at the GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR. Why? First of all, while being a highly attractive watch, the full gold model is very flashy indeed and retails for almost 40k euros. Not very “wide audience” watch material. Second, the two-tone version has made yet another impression on me. It’s rather interesting to look at how tastes and trends evolve. Two-tone watches used to have a rather negative image in the past, but they’ve moved from “poor man’s” options (understand, I want gold but can’t afford the solid gold one) to “cool man’s” options recently. So, here’s my choice. Even I have a hard time explaining why… It’s everything I shouldn’t like.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Back to basics. This new Steel and Yellow Gold Rolex GMT is nothing more than a visual update. Case; the same Oystersteel middle case as before, measuring a typical Rolex 40mm diameter, a relatively thin 11.90mm height (it’s still a sports watch with a rotating bezel and 100m water-resistance after all), and a still acceptable 48mm length. Dimensions, shapes, and finishes are all identical to a Pepsi or a  Batgirl , with now a solid 18k yellow gold Triplock screw-down crown and notched bezel. The other novelty comes from the new ceramic insert, in an unprecedented combination of black and mid-grey ( GR is N oi R ). And I must that this muted, discreet combination pairs brilliantly with the warm tone of YG. As if Rolex wanted to keep the attention only on the gold accents, whether on the case, bracelet, bezel or dial. The rest is all discreet, subtle. This new insert is almost like a graduation on black. And I think it works even better next to the steel parts of this Rolesor edition.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

As for the dial, it’s pretty straightforward too. No evolution to be noted in the design, it’s all about the colours and materials. As you’d expect, the black lacquered base is glossy, with applied hour markers and hands that match the case – thus, made of 18k yellow gold. And Rolex has also been slightly restrained when it comes to touches of colour. No flashy green or red accents on the GMT hand and GMT-Master II mention, just the same tone of gold as the rest of the dial. Tasteful and elegant, with just the dosage of bling you want in a gold or two-tone watch.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Importantly, this new GMT-Master II two-tone 126713GRNR, as well as the full yellow gold model, marks the first appearance of the Jubilee bracelet on precious metal GMT watches. It was only reserved for the steel Pepsi , Batgirl and Destro versions up until now. It means a 5-link, slightly vintage bracelet with polished 18k gold central links and brushed steel external links. Clasp; classic Oysterlock folding safety clasp with Easylink comfort extension link. Comfort; classic Jubilee, supple, soft and flexible. And the look is just as good as it gets (if you love Rolex and this style, of course).

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

Mechanically, no evolution either here. The new Rolesor GMT-Master II comes equipped with the Calibre 3285, an in-house automatic movement with Superlative Chronometer certification – meaning COSC certification and internal Rolex testing after casing, with -2/+2 seconds/day accuracy range. It features all of the brand’s latest innovations, including the Chronergy escapement, the Parachrom hairspring and paramagnetic nickel-phosphorus pallet fork and escape wheel, with a comfortable 70h power reserve. And like all watches from the range, it’s a flyer/traveller’s GMT watch , with an independently adjustable local hour hand, by one-hour increments.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

So, why did I fall for this new 126713GRNR…? Besides the obvious quality of the watch, there’s something that goes down, as simple as it is, to feelings. For a rather inexplicable, or at least tangible reason, this new model created emotions in me. I used to own a GMT-Master II in the past (a reference 116710LN to be precise) and I’ve always loved the functionality and overall robustness of the watch, but blamed a certain lack of warmth and fun. It felt too technical, too cold. While I do believe that most professional Rolex watches should be steel, due to their own purposeful nature, the GMT-Master II is the one watch in the range that can use some bling, some colours, and some precious materials… Keep in mind that the Rolex GMT has never been a pilot’s watch in the military sense of the concept. It has always been a civilian watch, for travelling up in the sky.

Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR

All in all, and I’m fully aware that I’m being subjective here, I do believe this 126713GRNR is the new coolest GMT. And yes, you can tell me that I’m wrong in the comments below and list what version you prefer, because in the end, it’s all about personal tastes.

The Rolex GMT-Master II Steel and Yellow Gold 126713GRNR is now released and “available” from retailers (relatively speaking, even if the situation seems to have recently improved a bit) at a price of EUR 16,300 ,  CHF 15,700 or  USD 16,450 . More details at rolex.com .

Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi ref 126710 BLRO (2018)

The Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi ref 126710 BLRO , introduced in 2018, stands as a testament to both the brand’s heritage and its unwavering commitment to innovation. This reference pays homage to the legendary blue and red bezel configuration, affectionately known as “Pepsi,” which has become synonymous with the GMT-Master collection. This reiteration, however, marked a significant milestone, as it heralded the return of the beloved Jubilee bracelet to the GMT-Master II lineup after an extended hiatus.

In deciphering the reference’s nomenclature, the last four letters, “BLRO,” provide intriguing insights. “BL” refers to the blue of the iconic ceramic bezel, while “RO” is a nod to the red; bleu/rouge. This amalgamation of letters mirrors the watch’s essence — a striking blend of vibrant aesthetics and robust craftsmanship.

Very happy with this purchase as I was with the Daytona purchased in June this year. Keep up the business model you currently have. You have earned my business!

Excellent service i simply love the watch

Exactly as described and supper fast shipping.

Great customer service, super fast shipping and the watch was exactly as described, which was in new condition! My husband has been wanting a Batman and this 2020 was a fabulous surprise for Christmas this year!

Great shape excellent service

fast delivery A+ service box, papers process was seamless! all rolexes i buy are from Bob's! the best!

Perfect condition stickers still on. Ordered at 5pm and delivered to house by noon next day. Incredible service!

Love the watch and the experience was very easy.

Ive been looking for a newer "Pepsi" GMT for some time. BObs is known for great service and they stand behind their product. This isnt the first purchase with them and it wont be the last. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

The hottest hardest to get Rolex steel sports watch to my doorstep less than 24 hrs. Perfect condition. Though listed as previously worn, but excellent condition. I could not even find the tiniest scratch or defect. Bob’s saw to it that even the local time and 24 hr GMT hand were set accurately when the watch arrived.

Love the look of the Pepsi and its function as a travel watch including 3 separate time zones and compass feature... I trust Bobs which is huge since Trust means everything! Love the transparency of pricing and your business model...

Beautiful timepiece and all the features were as advertised! I was nervous buying this over the internet but it was incredibly easy!

Excellent service. I am very pleased
