Two Big Star embryos sold to Britain for £62k

Big Star’s owner Gary Widdowson hopes to have secured future showjumping stars for Britain after he paid more than €70,000 (£62,500) for two Big Star embryos.

Mr Widdowson secured one embryo for €41,000, the second for €30,500 at this week’s Zangersheide online embryo auction (21-24 October)

“British showjumping is not in the greatest position right now because we’re lacking horses, but hopefully these two will now stay in the UK,” Mr Widdowson told H&H.

The first of the embryos bought by Mr Widdowson is out of Tinka’s Serenade (Tinka’s Boy x African Drum), Billy Twomey’s hugely successful showjumping ride, who was retired last year at the age of 19.

Billy partnered the chestnut mare, who is co-owned by Sue Davies, to many five-star victories, as well as at the 2012 Olympics, 2010 World Equestrian Games and World Cup finals in 2011 and 2014.

The embryo went for €41,000, the second highest price paid across the auction, after a Casall x Nabab De Reve embryo, which was sold to France for €46,000.

Mr Widdowson’s second Big Star embryo is out of Spirit T (Tornado x Carnaval Drum), the international ride of Jessica Mendoza, who was travelling reserve for the Rio Olympics.

“Tinka’s Serenade and Spirit T are fantastic mares, and good mares make a good foal, in theory,” Mr Widdowson said. “Obviously owning Big Star has a lot to do with [buying the embryos], but if we want to keep jumping going in the UK we need that quality.”

Mr Widdowson was the only British buyer at the auction, at which 26 embryos were sold.

“It is a bit disappointing that we were the only British buyer, but I’m hoping that if it works out for us, other people in this country may look into it. It’s an opportunity to get your hands on something you wouldn’t be able to otherwise,” added Gary.

John Hurst - Artist's Profile

Born in 1951, in North Lincolnshire and graduating from Bishop Grosseteste College , Lincoln - Fine Art, in 1972, John Hurst now resides on the North Norfolk coast with his wife Jacqui who specialises in fine linocuts of the Norfolk coast and its wildlife.

Coming from a working agricultural family and having spent much time on his own, his artistic instincts developed at an early age. Despite this isolation, a love of ancient agricultural practices and folklore can be seen reflected in his images as remnants of a bygone lifestyle. For the past 25 years, John's watercolours have been collected by a number of patrons, including The Crown Prince of Bahrain,The Earl of Yarborough, Sir Ian Botham and the Deans of York, Durham and Lincoln Minsters in the form of limited edition prints which were produced in aid of fabric funds. He has travelled widely, gaining inspiration from a variety of environments.

John published his autobiography ‘Watercolour Words’ in 2000 and in 2003 completed a national collection of Wesley Heritage studies, featuring architectural, landscape and interior compositions sourced from across The United Kingdom and Ireland. This collection formed the illustrative framework for his book, ‘John Wesley, A Pictorial Journey’. This body of work is now known as ’The Hurst Collection’ was owned and exhibited by The World Methodist Council at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, USA, prior to the paintings being acquired by the original subscribers.

Patronage by The Earl and Countess of Yarborough at Brocklesby, Lincolnshire has included an estate portrait made up of 50 original studies of this prominent estate for the Pelham family house. In order to do this, John visited the estate over the period of one year in order to capture the essence of a working ‘farm’. The Artist has painted for many well-known patrons in North Norfolk too, including The Deterding family at Kelling Hall Estate and still accepts local commissions that relate to his theme of work. In 2013 John received the patronage of Lady Leicester of Holkham who kindly wrote the foreword to his Norfolk Sketchbook and collected one of John's original watercolours.

John enjoys recording rural heritage, architecture, people and landscape for his many patrons, particularly those images that still remain within the confines of The Great Estates. He has successfully run ornithological sketchbook skills courses based at Salthouse and Cley NWT Reserve in which students drew birds on site and completed a watercolour after learning techniques during the day. John has a subtle technique, using both watercolour and gouache on tinted papers and was influenced by Thorburn, Turner, Forbes, Cotman and De Wint. The Newlyn and Norwich Schools with their 18th century style being so suitable for the accurate recording of the North Norfolk landscape have also been a great inspiration.

The Artist is a keen gardener, reluctant field sportsman and ornithologist who looks upon his residence on the Norfolk coast  as ‘a privilege’.

2008 saw John returning to North Carolina to complete a series of new commissions for The World Methodist Council based in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He also accepted a year in residence at one of the great Norfolk estates in order to complete a ’book for the house’, comprising of fifty watercolours bound within one book, a true heritage piece for future generations. He received a national book proposal in 2009 which involved recording in watercolour the people and places of North Norfolk. This resulted in the acclaimed book 'Norfolk Coastal Colours', published by Halsgrove in 2010 and now an out of print collectors item.

In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, whilst holding eight exhibitions each year, John also completed several major works for Scira Offshore Energy Ltd, including of studies showing the Sheringham Shoal Windfarm in construction. John  has completed a series of sketches to form a sketchbook which was published in May 2013.The foreword of this book has been kindly written by Lady Leicester, Holkham.During the Autumn and Winter of 2014/15, John completed several major commissions, including a heritage book of watercolours based on Rosedale Moor, North Yorkshire for his lifelong friend, Liam Botham and the Tidal Transit Fleet, moored in Wells Outer harbour for Leo Hambro and associates.

In May 2015,'Black Country', the first book in the trilogy about the18th century US travelling preacher, Francis Astbury went to press. By kind invitation of the author, Al Filipo, based in Florida, John's illustration forms the book jacket and depicts nail workers in a Black Country foundary.

John's 2015 solo shows were a great success and having completed his major autumn commission, a leather bound book of 20 original watercolours depicting Pixton House and The Lakes estate,Exmoor for Liam Botham on behalf of Richard Caring.

During 2016,John completed another exciting and inovating book of his favourite Norfolk walks. In 2017 and 2018,John held four solo exhibitions and completed several major national commissions. During this time, one of John's watercolours was acquired by HRH The Crown Prince of Bahrain.

In 2019, John completed an eight month commission to paint the beautiful Kelling Estate on the Norfolk coast. The collection of paintings were expertly bound in goatskin leather and gold tooled by Eric Bovill, assisted by his wife Erika. This heritage book will remain in Kelling Hall for future generations to enjoy.Below are two images showing Eric at work on the book. For the super yacht, portrait and book commissions, John extends his sincere thanks to Beverley and Gary Widdowson for this privilage.

During 2020, John completed another heritage estate collection in Suffolk, expertly leather bound and gold tooled by Peartree Bindery in Norwich and continued to write and illustrate his book of memoirs , 'Watercolour Words, 50 Years in 2021.

2022 and 2023 again saw John exhibiting at his favourite locations, Cley and Salthouse, where at each show he continues to make new friends and meet new patrons.

Rich List reveals wealthiest in recycling

High-profile figures from throughout the waste and recycling sector have again featured in the Sunday Times Rich list of the 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain and Ireland.

Published yesterday, the 2008 survey includes figures ranging from the founder of waste firms Biffa and Grundon to figures who have made their fortunes in metal recycling.

With the effect of the credit crunch taking its toll, many of the wealthiest have slipped a few places from last year (see letsrecycle.com story) .

However, Phillip Sheppard and family – who heads Merseyside-based firm European Metal Recycling – rose from 118th place to number 96.

This is just four places, in the Sunday Times's listing, behind entrepreneur and TV personality, Sir Alan Sugar.

The analysis stated that EMR acquired six firms in the US in the last 18 months and that its profits rose from £56m to £104m on a £1.7 billion turnover in 2007.

The paper said that the company has been helped by tougher European environmental standards which have helped it to grow to an estimated £750 million.

The Rich List is based on the Sunday Times' estimates of the minimum wealth of Britain's 1,000 richest people or families.

The figures are compiled from “identifiable wealth, whether land, property, racehorses, art or significant shares in publicly quoted companies. Bank accounts and small shareholdings in private equity portfolio are excluded as they are not available to the public.”

This year, Sean Quinn and family – who heads Ireland's Quinn group, which incorporates Quinn Glass – makes 12th place – and is the richest in Northern Ireland, with a wealth of £3,730 million.

In the money: recycling and waste management has helped to create a few of Britain's wealthiest people

Among other figures included in the list is Michael Cornish and family, who retain a stake in the Lincolnshire packaging group Linpac after selling most of his shares in 2003 for £700m. The company is one of the UK's largest plastic recycling firms and is estimated to be worth £640 million.

Sir Michael Smurfit and family, who ran Dublin packaging and paper recycling firm Smurfit for 53 years, is also included at an estimated at £398 million.

Other high-risers include Sir Martin Laing and company – the last family chairman of London-based construction company John Laing, which is the preferred bidder alongside Viridor Waste Management for Manchester's multi-billion pound waste management contract. He is worth an estimated £175 million.

In the metal recycling sector, several players made the rich list, alongside Phillip Sheppard.

This includes Essex-based Gary Widdowson – who sold Metal & Waste Recycling in 2006 for a reputed £120 million, and is thought to be worth £160 million – and John Harry, who leads Merseyside firm S Norton, which is valued at £90 million.

In the waste management sector, Richard Biffa, who founded the recently acquired Biffa Waste Services, has retired from the board of Slough-based Shanks Group but still remains a shareholder, is valued at £105 million.

And, Norman Grundon, who owns Slough-based waste firm Grundon Waste Management,  has an estimated £80 million, down from £110million quoted last year.

Perini Navi sailing yacht Norfolk Star for sale

The 37 metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Norfolk Star has been listed for sale by Burgess .

Norfolk Star was built to ABS class by Italian yard Perini Navi and delivered in 1996. She received a refit in 2016 that included a full repaint and an engine room overhaul and was most recently refitted again in 2020.

The main saloon has comfortable seating on two settees and an armchair, a coffee table and a walnut dining table plus an entertainment centre including a large plasma television screen and a stereo surround sound system. Her interior is finished in cherry wood and large portholes fill the interior with natural light.

Norfolk Star accommodates six guests in three cabins, which consist of a master suite and two twins, one with a Pullman berth, and all cabins have en suite shower facilities. In addition, there are quarters for five crew.

There is plenty of space for outdoor enjoyment on the main deck, featuring a cockpit that fulfils a dual function in that one half has circular seating for eight guests around a coffee table while the other half is fitted for al fresco dining, again for eight guests.

A Volvo Penta TAMD 162A engine gives her a range of 3,850 nautical miles at 10 knots and her total sail area of 7,374 square feet gives her a cruising speed of up to 12 knots.

Norfolk Star is asking €5,950,000.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

gary widdowson yacht

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

gary widdowson yacht

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

gary widdowson yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

gary widdowson yacht

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

gary widdowson yacht

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

gary widdowson yacht

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

gary widdowson yacht

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
