How San Diego became a player in the super-glitzy world of superyachts

The 145-foot superyacht Dumb Luck, center, is docked in Shelter Island basin.

For superyacht owners, no extravagance is too extreme, no port too glamorous

If you doubt that the super-rich are a different breed, tour their superyachts.

Take, for instance, Golden Shadow. Launched in 1995 by San Diego’s Campbell Shipyard, the 219-foot vessel has luxurious staterooms for 16 guests, more modest quarters for 22 crew members, a 50-square-foot dive chamber and an exterior elevator platform, powerful enough to hoist aboard a seaplane and spacious enough to set down a helicopter.

Impressed? Don’t be. Golden Shadow was built as a floating garage for Golden Odyssey, a Saudi prince’s 404-foot superyacht.

“These big yachts have so many helicopters and toys aboard,” said Neal Esterly, a San Diego salesman for Fraser, a premier superyacht broker. “They are building 200-foot shadow boats to carry the submarine, the helicopter, the dirt bikes.”

In the world of superyachts, no extravagance is too extreme, no port too glamorous. These palatial vessels anchor off Cannes, roam the Windward Islands, explore Norwegian fjords, wander across the Pacific. The owners — Russian oligarchs, Middle Eastern sheikhs, American tech titans — travel in royal splendor with Cordon Bleu-trained chefs, masseuses, dive masters, pilots, tutors for the kids. On board, they are surrounded by African hardwood cabinets, spas fed by waterfalls, herb gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, basketball courts, hot tubs, Dale Chihuly glass chandeliers and Keith Haring originals.

Size alone doesn’t define a superyacht, but everything in this category is at least 75 feet from stem to stern. The largest, the 600-footer REV Ocean, is almost 100 feet longer than a U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

“They are very much for the 1%,” said San Diego’s Kate Pearson, chair of the U.S. Superyacht Association. “Well, the .1%.”

During a leisurely voyage — from Alaskan glaciers to Costa Rican rainforests, say — these vessels often need to pause in a safe harbor for repairs and replenishment. That’s San Diego’s role in this glitzy world, offering shipyards, sheltered dock space and an army of woodworkers, welders, engineers, sailmakers, even specialists in the surprisingly delicate task of on-board carpet cleaning.

All of this, fans note, pumps money into the local economy. So do the live-aboard crew members who take advantage of our waterfront’s proximity to bars, restaurants, nightclubs.

“Most of them are 35 and younger. They pay no rent, no monthly bills, they’re not paying for food,” said Steve Brownsea, captain of the 145-foot Dumb Luck, moored at Shelter Island. “All they do is go and party.”

Like all industries, this business is sensitive to the market’s ebbs and flows. Orders for new vessels slipped during the Great Recession and brokers like Esterly keep a wary eye on signs that the global economy is weakening. As the gap between the .1% and everyone else widens, some superyachters fret about the “optics” of their seagoing displays of super-wealth.

Perhaps the greatest hazard, though, is also this lifestyle’s greatest attraction: the beautiful and unforgiving sea.

Port for all reasons

San Diego arrived late to the party. Massive pleasure yachts have been enjoyed by European royal families for centuries, while the ostentatious vessels of 19th century American tycoons commonly cruised near the Gilded Age mansions of Newport, R.I., and Long Island, N.Y.

In 1947, David Fraser founded a yacht brokerage house in Newport Beach. About 20 years later, he opened a branch office San Diego. Despite these deep Southern California roots, Fraser now has an Old World feel — in the 1990s, it merged with Europe’s United Yachting, and the company’s headquarters moved to Monaco. With Burgess and Y.Co, Fraser is one of superyachting’s Big Three brokers.

While Fraser maintains an office here, San Diego is home port for only a handful of superyachts.

“We don’t have the cruising grounds like you have in Florida, the Bahamas, the Caribbean or Europe,” Esterly said. “From San Diego, Cabo and Seattle are each 1,000 miles away. Between those two, there just isn’t any place to go cruising. You can only go to Catalina Island so many times.”

To this super-wealthy crowd, though, San Diego markets itself as the destination between destinations.

“We are not Monaco or the Bahamas,” said Todd Roberts, president of Fifth Avenue Landing, the superyacht anchorage south of Seaport Village. “We are effectively a transit port. But we are doing a pretty good job of giving the superyacht the whole package.”

The landing’s 12 slips can accommodate mid-size superyachts, up to about 300 feet in length. Vessels that moor here can hook up to shore power, pump out “blackwater” — yachtspeak for sewage — unload food, drink and other supplies straight off the dock. Fifth Avenue also owns the Marine Group Boat Works, which operates shipyards in National City and Chula Vista.

San Diego’s naval heritage guarantees plenty of people trained in ship maintenance. Brownsea, the captain of Dumb Luck, recalls the dismay of another superyacht’s owner, when he learned his vessel needed new parts that were only available in Europe. His sailing date would have been delayed — if he hadn’t stumbled upon a San Diegan able to machine the parts.

“They were delivered within 24 hours,” Brownsea said. “The owner couldn’t believe it.”

Geography, too, works in San Diego’s favor. For southbound sailors waiting for the Mexican hurricane season to blow itself out, this bay is a comfortable place to spend days or weeks while monitoring satellite weather maps.

“The captains that go down to the Sea of Cortez, they all stop in San Diego,” said Scott Whittaker, the Puget Sound-based skipper of Gayle Force, a 99-foot expedition boat. “Everybody does.”

Changing trends in sailing also benefit San Diego, as long voyages — to Costa Rica and Peru, say, then across the Pacific to New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Micronesia and finally back to the U.S. — appeal to a certain class of well-heeled wanderer.

“The boats we get in San Diego, the vessels you see on our waterfront that blow your mind, that owner is more adventurous,” said Fifth Avenue’s Roberts. “The yacht owner who wants to sit on the deck with a margarita and wave at his friends, those aren’t the owners we get. We get the more expeditionary owner.”

Expeditionary or sedentary, owners value their privacy. Typical is Robert Mercer, a New York tech millionaire and major financial contributor to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. On Sept. 11, his superyacht tried to enter San Diego Bay incognito, with tarps draped over her name.

Might as well put sunglasses on the Mona Lisa. One of the world’s most photographed vessels, this 203-foot floating mansion is instantly recognizable, thanks to her forest green hull and cream-colored decks. Few, though, have been invited aboard to marvel at the carved mahogany “tree” rising through four decks, the frescoes saluting Darwin and Newton, the hand-knotted carpet of Nepalese wool and silk.

During Sea Owl’s eight-week stay at Fifth Avenue, a sign dangled over her gangway: “Private yacht — no boarding.”

Peril on the sea

Like a garage full of Maseratis or a closet full of Valentino gowns, superyachts are a sure sign of wealth. TV’s Judge Judy owns a 152-foot cruiser, Triumphant Lady, while Tiger Woods’s Privacy is slightly larger, 155 feet. Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas is grander still, a 282-foot home-away-from-his-other-homes-away-from-home, with crew of 23, flotilla of tenders and on-board movie theater.

San Diego has enjoyed occasional visits by ocean-going glitterati, such as Luna, the 377-foot vessel owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, and Tatoosh, a 303-foot wonder built for the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The latter’s five decks house a cinema, gym, massage room, swimming pool, 11 staterooms and a crew of 35. Fraser now charters Tatoosh — a week in the Caribbean this winter will run $650,000.

Attessa IV also made a big splash here, mooring in San Diego Bay often between 2016 and 2018. Her most recent visit ended in tragedy — while cruising off Imperial Beach on Oct. 26, 2018, Attessa IV slammed into the Prowler, a 65-foot sportfishing boat. One passenger, Richard Neff, was killed and another, John Schmit, critically injured.

Schmit, who suffered a fractured skull, vertebra, rib and sternum, sued the owners of Attessa IV and Prowler. A hearing in this case is scheduled for Dec. 6.

Both vessels reported poor visibility due to heavy fog, just one of the many hazards superyachts must navigate. A partial listing of recent victims: in 2015, Hurricane Carlos sank the 127-foot Bellissima near Acapulco; in 2017, Hurricane Irma sank the 131-foot Sierra Romeo in the Caribbean; and in 2018, heavy seas capsized the 124-foot Suegno off the Italian port of Genoa.

Some danger can be avoided by staying in port. Dumb Luck, the 145-foot tri-level motor yacht skippered by Brownsea, rarely leaves her Shelter Island dock. Even so, the usually absent owner is hit hard in his pocketbook.

“Just to keep her in port costs about $750,000 a year,” said Brownsea, citing the crew’s salary, docking fees, fuel, insurance and property tax, the latter levied on vessels that remain here at least six months a year. “If we were active, going more places, it would be about $1.5 million.”

That’s a lot of money — unless you are a superyachter. Fifth Avenue’s Roberts once priced repairs for an owner. The job wasn’t cheap, and Roberts advised the owner that expenses would climb astronomically if had to be done quickly.

“I’m old, Todd,” the owner responded. “I have way more money than time. Just make it happen.”

Super budget

If superyachts are for the .1%, the Nerissa is for the other 99.9% — or at least those with a decent amount of disposable income. A 73-foot motor yacht going to seed on the Gulf Shore, Nerissa was purchased by San Diego’s Shari and Amos Zolna, who restored it as a party vessel with a well-stocked bar and a hot tub.

Now docked on Shelter Island and Coast Guard-certified for 49 passengers, Nerissa specializes in day cruises on San Diego Bay. Summer is her high season, but year-round she is booked by bachelor and bachelorette parties, sightseers, sunset cruisers and others. Two hours on the water for 40 people, with a caterer and an open bar, runs about $5,000, or $125 a head.

motor yacht seed

The experience, Amas Zolna said, is priceless: “There’s nothing like sitting out there in the hot tub with a cold beer or a glass of wine.”

The true superyacht experience will always be far out of reach for most people. Kate Pearson, the U.S. Superyacht Association’s chair, laughs when asked if she owns one.

“No,” said Pearson, who is vice president of Safe Harbors Marina, the world’s largest owner and operator of marinas. “We are a boating family, but on a much more subdued level.”

While she has been a guest aboard numerous superyachts, she views them the way most people view the stars — something beautiful, magnificent and unattainable. When Pearson is sailing with guests and they see a superyacht, she quickly alters course.

“We take them up close,” she said.

The 13 Fastest Superyachts in the World

These boats prove that size doesn't have to mean slow..

13 Fastest superyachts

When American businessman John Staluppi embarked on his yachting journey, it was to break records. He wanted his first yacht to be the first boat over 100 feet to exceed 30 knots, or 34.5 mph. He achieved it with the 118-foot For Your Eyes Only, delivered in 1985. It was also the first motoryacht in the US to have a combination of MTU diesel engines with water-jet propulsion.

His second yacht would smash all previous records. Delivered by Heesen in 1988, Octopussy fulfilled the Bond enthusiast’s aim to break the then 50-knot barrier with a top end of 53.17 knots (61 mph)—a speed that every other shipyard at the time said couldn’t be done. Octopussy  immediately entered the record books as the world’s fastest yacht.

“That record was important to me because when you pull into any place there’s always a bigger boat or a prettier boat, but there aren’t many people who can say, ‘Hey, this is the fastest yacht in the world,’” Staluppi told Robb Report .

Heesen’s latest delivery, the 197-foot Ultra G , is one of the Dutch yard’s fastest projects these days, with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, including four water jets that deliver a top speed of 37 knots (42.57 mph).

Of course, 43 mph is a paltry number compared to many of the yachts on this list, including the new Bolide 80. That Italian stallion, which will make its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, runs at a blistering 84 mph. It shows that speed, even in the large motoryacht category, is very much alive.

Here are 13 of the fastest motoryachts, past and present, that have ever been on the water.

1. Bolide 80 | 84 mph

motor yacht seed

Victory Marine calls the Bolide 80 its first “Hyper Muscle Yacht,” which will be part of a limited-edition series from 60 to 170 feet. Designer Brunello Acampora and his tema of engineers pulled out all the stops on this 80, creating a full-carbon-fiber boat with more than 6,000 horsepower. The multi-stepped hull helps propel the Bolide to its top speed of 70 knots (84 mph), while accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of burning about half the fuel of a much smaller flybridge motoryacht at lower cruising speeds. The designer took care to give the Bolide a streamlined profile, with aerodynamic shapes to reduce resistance. The interior includes the captain’s cabin, a full-sized galley, open salon, and a forward owner’s area with a bedroom, en suite and wardrobe area. It will make its global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show.

2. ‘Foners’ | 80.56 mph

motor yacht seed

Clocking a thrilling 70.10 knots (80.56 mph), the 136-foot Foners has maintained pole position as the world’s fastest superyacht for over 20 years. Powered by two 1,280hp MAN engines coupled to three Rolls-Royce 6,700 hp gas turbines driving three KaMeWa water jets, the all-aluminum boat is less about piercing waves and more about parting the seas. Delivered in 2000 by Spanish shipyard Izar as the King of Spain’s royal yacht, no expense was spared, including a superstructure lined with Aramid fiber for the express purpose of bulletproofing the interior.

3. ‘World Is Not Enough’ | 77.1 mph

motor yacht seed

You need to only look at the 007-inspired name to know that World Is Not Enough is another rapid racer commissioned by John Staluppi, this time with an opulent interior designed by his wife Jeanette in partnership with Evan K Marshall. Delivered in 2004 by Millennium Super Yachts, the 139-footer is powered by two Paxman diesel engines and two Lycoming gas turbines to produce a staggering 20,600hp and a breathtaking 67 knots (77.1 mph). When not leaving other boats behind, World Is Not Enough has a cruising range of 3800 nautical miles at a comfortable speed of 10 knots.

4. ‘Galeocerdo’ | 74.8 mph

motor yacht seed

Wally founder Luca Bassani designed the 118-foot Galeocerdo to maintain speed in rough seas. Launched in 2003 by Rodriquez Yachts, the boat racks up an eye-watering 65 knots (74.8 mph), thanks to its three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, each driving a Rolls-Royce KaMeWa water jet. Another performance-enhancing feature is the lightweight titanium exhaust system designed to resist the extreme temperatures generated by the gas turbines. Wind tunnel tested at the Ferrari facility in Maranello, Italy, the boat generates 16,800hp and a 45-knot (51.8-mph) cruising speed that’s faster than most motoryachts running flat out. It also enjoys a highly futuristic exterior design.

5. Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 | 72.5 mph

motor yacht seed

When Italian supercar brand Lamborghini teamed up with yachting stalwart The Italian Sea Group, the end result had to be style and performance. The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is all about the power of ‘63’. Designed and built to celebrate the year 1963 when Ferruccio Lamborghini founded his car company, the 63-footer delivers a whiplashing top speed of 63 knots (72.5 mph). And naturally, it’s one of just 63 in the series that will ever be made. Built out of carbon fiber, it’s fitted with two MAN V12-2000HP engines. MMA fighter Conor McGregor took delivery of hull number one in 2020, which reportedly cost $4 million.

6. ‘Chato’ | 71.9 mph

motor yacht seed

Back in the mid-1980s, passionate Baglietto customer and leading US Porsche and VW dealer Baron John von Neumann, commissioned a new 85-ft. speed demon from the Italian builder. The entrepreneur was tired of his 34-knot (39-mph) Baglietto getting creamed from Monaco to St. Tropez by faster cruisers. With a hull design by the legendary Alcide Sculati, the all-aluminum Chato came with MTU’s latest 3,480hp V16s coupled to KaMeWa waterjets. Weighing 60 tons, and packing almost 7,000 hp, the military-looking superyacht with its battleship-gray paint and bright-red diagonal hull stripes, hit an astonishing top speed of 62.5 knots (71.9 mph) during sea trials. Chato is currently for sale in the South of France for $715,000.

7. ‘Oci Ciornie’ | 69.04 mph

motor yacht seed

Oci Ciornie’s Vripack-designed interior may take inspiration from aircraft designs, but it’s the boat’s naval architecture by Don Shead and the combination of two 1,800hp MTU 16V 2000 M90 engines, a 4,600 hp AVCO Lycoming gas turbine and Arneson surface drives that put it on this list. Delivered in 1998 by Palmer Johnson with an aluminum hull, the 82-foot boat thrusts through water at 60 knots (69.04 mph), giving all eight guests the waterborne ride of their lives.

8. ‘Destriero’ | 68 mph

motor yacht seed

The numbers almost defy logic. With a length of 224 feet, the all-aluminum superyacht Destriero is massive. Now add a trio of GE Aviation LM1600 gas turbines totaling an insane 60,000 hp and the incredulity only increases. Flat out, Destriero could scythe through waves at a staggering 59 knots, or 68 mph. Back in 1992, just one year after its launch, the Fincantieri-built rocketship showed its chops by challenging the famous Blue Riband trans-Atlantic speed record. Averaging 53.09 knots for the 3,106 nautical-mile run, Destriero shattered the record, only to be denied the trophy for being classed as a private yacht and not a commercial passenger vessel. Sadly, today the iconic yacht lies largely abandoned at one of Lurssen’s yards in Germany, awaiting rescue.

9. ‘Ermis²’ | 65.59 mph

motor yacht seed

Some yachts feature slippery hull designs, others are propelled by rockets, but the McMullen & Wing-built Ermis² is one of the fastest yachts on the superyacht circuit thanks to its lightweight materials. Built from a combination of carbon/epoxy, aerospace grade carbon fiber and titanium, the 123-foot boat taps out at 57 knots (65.59 mph.) Delivered in 2007, its 10,944 horsepower comes from three MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines. Designed inside and out by Rob Humphreys, its classic looks disguise the speed demon within.

10. ‘Why Not U’ | 63.3 mph

motor yacht seed

Why Not U is a yacht that comfortably cruises at 47 knots (54.1 mph)—a speed most owners only dream of reaching. When time is of the essence, the boat cranks up its Vericor TF40 gas turbine engines to max out at 55 knots (63.3 mph). Delivered by Overmarine in 2001, Why Not U ’s 4.3-foot draft makes it well suited for cruising shallow waters, while its sunbathing areas allow guests to catch some rays traveling at the speed of light.

11. ‘Alamshar’ | 52 mph

motor yacht seed

Alamshar is another custom collaboration between Donald Blount and Pininfarina commissioned by Aga Khan IV, this time with interiors by Redman Whiteley Dixon. It was reportedly built for an estimated $200 million at the Devonport shipyard in Falmouth, United Kingdom, and took 13 years to complete. When it was eventually delivered in 2014, Alamshar’s top speed of 45 knots (51.78 mph), generated by twin Rolls-Royce Marine engines and three waterjets, seemed worth the wait.

12. ‘Moon Goddess’ | 51.78 mph

motor yacht seed

Exterior designed by Espen Øino with an interior by Franco Zuretti, the all-aluminum Moon Goddess is a 115-foot yacht with a turquoise hull that matches the color of its oversized leather sunpads. When cruising at 30 knots (34.52 mph) or tearing up the oceans at 45 knots (51.78 mph), most other boats just catch a glimpse of sea spray that the planing yacht leaves in its wake. It’s powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines with twin water jets, which generate a combined 7,498 hp.

13. ‘Azzam’ | 35.7 mph

motor yacht seed

At a staggering 590 feet bow-to-stern, the Lurssen-built Azzam earns the title of world’s longest privately owned gigayacht. But with its remarkable-for-the-size top speed of 31 knots (35.7 mph), it’s also the fastest. Twin 12,000hp MTU V20 turbo-diesels do the day-to-day powering at up to 18 knots (20.7 mph). But crank up the twin GE LM2500 gas turbines, coupled to four Wartsila waterjets, and there’s a staggering 94,000hp on tap. Of course, like Azzam ‘s original owner, it helps if you own a few oil wells: At max speed, the yacht reportedly burns 13 tons of fuel an hour. Launched in 2013 at a reported cost of some $600 million, Azzam accommodates 30 guests pampered by up to 80 crew.

Folding TVs and AI technology: How to future proof your superyacht

From futuristic TV screens to AI-controlled lighting, there are plenty of innovative upgrades to tempt yacht owners back to the shipyard. Steve May talks to the tech specialists ready to take your boat to the next level

From spectacular 200-inch unfolding screens and pop-up party speakers to universal internet connectivity and sophisticated LED lighting, there’s no shortage of upgrade options available to aspirational superyacht owners. The latest networking technologies can transform the yachting experience for charter guests, much to the relief of Netflix addicts, and what value is a helipad if it can’t do double duty as a dance floor? To find out more about what’s in vogue, we got in touch with specialists in the business of upgrading the world’s best boats.

David Savage, founder and CEO of Excelerate Technology Group, knows what it takes to upgrade a yacht. His Sunseeker 94 has become the research and development platform for the company, and has been subject to a number of smart embellishments.

“We all know that space is at a premium on smaller yachts, but you would still be amazed where old technology may have been installed” says Savage. “When we were upgrading our Sunseeker we noticed something was consuming bandwidth on board, but we didn’t even know what it was. Because of space problems it took us ages to find out where the hell it was.” The team eventually located an errant media server hogging the bandwidth. Furthermore, it wasn’t a cool running design or kept in a ventilated space. “I’m surprised my 2006 yacht didn’t catch fire at some point,” he adds.

Connectivity and audio

Network connectivity is a key focus of most upgraders, says Savage. “It was barely an afterthought a few years ago, but now, if an owner loses their internet, the captain loses his job. It’s as important as air conditioning.” Savage recommends a robust 4G system.

Maurizio Minossi, CEO of audiovisual and IT specialist Videoworks, agrees that the number-one upgrade on boats large and small is professional-grade internet connectivity, but points to 5G. It’s also a fairly low-cost upgrade. That said, improved audio systems come a close second to improved broadband on the upgrade shopping list. “Most people on yachts want to party,” he points out. “Ships may be delivered with external area audio, but it’s usually not good enough to dance to.”

Videoworks hopes to tempt owners to upgrade with its innovative Pop-Up Speaker. The retractable audio system is fully weatherproof, but is good-looking enough for internal duties too. It’s customisable when it comes to materials and colour and requires only 75 centimetres to disappear from view. When integrated, there’s no unsightly cabling to contend with either.

AV upgrades are also keeping refit specialist Bond TM busy. Zeb Robin, the company’s technical director, says yacht owners are increasingly keen to upgrade their cinema systems, thanks to growing interest in Dolby Atmos 3D Audio.

“Unlike the 3D TV fad of the last decade – which we steered our clients to avoid – we feel that the 3D sound experience provides a noticeable and fun improvement that can be heard and felt any time someone watches a modern action film. Many technologies offer only marginal improvements, or under-the-hood technical benefits which guests wouldn’t notice, but we feel Dolby Atmos is special, and it’s gaining traction.”

An evolution of cinematic surround sound, Dolby Atmos adds extra height channel audio to the front left, centre, right and rear speaker array. This requires integrators to place dedicated speakers into the ceiling of the cinema or media room. The viewer is then fully immersed in movie sound effects, which come from every direction.

AV upgrades are also keeping refit specialist Bond TM busy. Zeb Robin, the company’s technical director, says yacht owners are increasingly keen to upgrade their cinema systems, thanks to growing interest in Dolby Atmos  3D Audio.

Air sensors

Even air is getting an upgrade. Will Faimatea, founder of Bond TM, cites pathogen-detection devices, recently unveiled by healthcare startup Poppy, as one the most exciting modern innovations. The technology is currently being rolled out in Europe and is specified on some new builds. “The ability to detect not only Covid-19, but any airborne particle with DNA, viruses, bacteria and mould, will add a new level of security from a health perspective,” he suggests.

Perhaps surprisingly, pathogen detection isn’t the preserve of larger vessels. “I expect us to have the lab test equipment to process the Poppy device by the end of February in our Monaco and Barcelona offices,” says Faimatea. “This will be the size of a shoe box and will not need a lab technician to operate.”

One audiovisual innovation getting bigger and bigger comes in the form of direct MicroLED displays such as Samsung’s The Wall. Using innovative modular MicroLED blocks, these screens are uniquely scalable and can typically reach diagonal widths of up to 292 inches.

“True ‘absence of light’ blacks, plus enough brightness to let you comfortably watch TV in a sunlit room – these are game-changers,” enthuses Bond TM’s Robin. “Once you see a MicroLED, it can become hard to enjoy conventional backlit TVs, which offer dark greys for blacks and brightness levels that struggle on sunny days.”

Monster televisions aren’t just for binging Below Deck . “Driving display sizes upwards is a growing desire to display art pieces, and create ambient experiences on board,” Kris Hogg, Samsung’s European business manager, Luxury Living, says. “The massive uptake in NFTs [non-fungible tokens], particularly in the luxury sector, has driven demand for dedicated screens for displaying [digital] art.”

Hogg says Samsung has installed screens in stairwells, lift shafts and ceilings to create such ambient spaces. “We’ve also installed The Wall into cinema rooms, saloon decks and even a  kids games room on board. It’s worth stressing that The Wall has been designed and tested with superyacht applications in mind. It’s an important market for us and we wanted to ensure we provide the best product on the market, as well as being fit for purpose.”

Samsung’s innovations don’t stop at The Wall. “We installed a 40-metre curved ceiling screen on a cruise liner in 2019, which shows what we are capable of delivering on a superyacht,” says Hogg.

C SEED by Porsche Design is also renowned for its spectacular displays. The company has been installing its Supermarine unfolding TVs and retractable speakers on yachts for two years, and EMEA sales director James Common says he expects the technology to become standard on 40-metre-plus superyachts.

“Not only does C SEED have the wow factor, but it’s also practical,” he says. “We can fit a 144- or 201-inch unfolding screen into a depth of 600mm. For example, by installing our retractable TV and speakers around a helipad, it makes great use of the space as an entertainment area but can retract in 90 seconds, allowing a helicopter to land.”

Typical C SEED screen applications include big cinematic experiences, sporting events and digital art. There’s a full-blown party mode, complete with moving images to match the music, too.

The company has also adopted MicroLED technology for both external and internal screens. “MicroLED gives the viewer a  more realistic experience when compared to a conventional TV or projector by increasing brightness and colour vividness and giving deeper blacks,” says Common.

While conventional TVs have a peak brightness between 400 and 1500 nits, C SEED is up to 10 times brighter. “This enables some of our clients to watch TV from a beach,” he claims.

A C SEED TV isn’t just larger than conventional screens, which typically max out at 100 inches. “It can rotate up to 180 degrees for use between different areas or decks. Imagine a swimming or spa pool on one side and dining or seating on the other. The TV can be positioned in the middle and rotate between areas,” he says. “Most of the yacht projects we work on require customisations to the TV to make it fit, and we’re happy to do this.”

One clear upgrade trend, says Robin, is in event systems – the kind of jaw-dropping light, sound and sometimes stage additions that make a yacht ready for live performances, DJ sets or outdoor cinema experiences.

“By integrating these technologies directly into a vessel, as opposed to renting hardware for a specific event, it allows for an impressive and polished party experience, able to be deployed at short notice and without the mess of temporary cabling and tripods everywhere.”

Of course, not all AV upgrades need to be so extravagant. “If the customer wants a 3DS Max cinema, that’s fine – but it’s not the norm,” says Excelerate’s Savage. “It’s nothing more than having really good TVs on board. That said, I’m not even sure how many people watch TV in their guest cabins these days.”

User interfaces

The art of control continues to evolve, as yacht owners look to replicate and improve the kind of user experience that charter customers and guests will already be familiar with. Videoworks aims to embrace two different approaches, says Minossi: “Owner-families will have full control of lighting, shading and entertainment systems with their personal smartphones, so that ship control is like any other app they are used to, while the second direction allows them the option to control all their experiences with a Smart TV interface and original TV remote control.”

When it comes to improving the everyday experience, AI’s influence is growing, he adds. “Putting AV light curtain control into an AI engine, so it’s better able to customize actions according to guests’ behaviours, makes sense.”

Smart ambient light sensors could be used to trigger shading in lounge areas, or lighting could dim whenever a Cinema preset is selected on a control pad. Entertainment systems increasingly incorporate motion detection and voice control.

Sky Glass TV, which integrates subscription services into a smart television, will turn itself on when it hears a greeting of “Hello Sky”. It also switches itself off when it detects no motion in a room for a given time.

Adding extra sensors could improve energy saving, suggests Minossi. Motion or occupancy sensors detect whether a cabin is occupied, and thus needs to be lit or heated. Crestron, known for integrated lighting and shading control, includes them as part of its full automation solution.

When it comes to interface style, Savage says it’s a question of balance between on-screen and analogue. “There are some circumstances where you’re staring ahead, concentrating on what’s ahead of you, and you can put your arm down and intuitively find the button that you want.”

For top-level luxury systems, iPad control remains the preferred choice, says Robin. “The only negative responses we get are from clients who prefer a tactile remote with physical buttons. For these clients we recommend both. Tactile remotes are great. They don’t create a bright glare in a dark room, or require taking your eyes off the TV to adjust volume or press pause. But they do have a learning curve and are an acquired taste, which usually leads us to deliver both side by side so guests can choose.”

Upgrading lighting on your yacht can be as simple as swapping halogen light bulbs for their LED equivalents. The fuel savings from reduced power draw and HVAC loads are tangible and worthwhile. But that’s not the same as upgrading lighting design.

“Aesthetic impact is much harder to judge as the quality of the light and the emission patterns of LEDs are different,” explains Robin. “There is a lot of art and science to good lighting design, which takes into account the nature of light being created by the fixtures. This side of things is not simple.”

Robin also notes a sound of caution on long-term stability. “Not all LED products last as long as one would expect due to manufacturing errors or cost-cutting. For example, special care with rope lighting is needed, as when cheap products are used, you could see individual LEDs fail even after just one year, creating a gap in the line of lights. Replacing a whole LED rope can be a very tricky and time-consuming job depending on how it was fitted. I think most electrical crews will have horror stories about dealing with linear LED products.”

Bespoke upgrades for owners, charters and explorers

There are, unsurprisingly, significant differences when it comes to upgrading different vessels, be they owner/drivers, charters or explorers. “Private yachts tend to have very focused needs tailored to the demands of the client,” says Robin. “No effort is given to technologies the clients are not interested in. Charter vessels, on the other hand, tend to need a much more flexible system to handle a wide variety of guests’ needs – for example, the inclusion of a cinema system that the owner may personally have little interest in.

“Charter vessels need to be better prepared to entertain guests. Explorer vessels aren’t a separate category in our experience as they are sometimes private, sometimes charter. They are, however, more likely to have other interesting capabilities to integrate, such as remotely operated vehicles or submarines, which both can have interesting AV/IT implications.”

Integration of smartphones and personal devices into marine systems has become commonplace. “It would be strange to see a new system, from a new build or recent refit, which did not have Airplay and Chromecast capabilities ready to go,” says Robin.

“Streaming TV is perhaps even a counter-example, where yachts have actually lagged behind the rest of the world due to the high cost and poor speed of past marine internet options. Only in the last five to ten years have internet speeds become sufficiently fast and cheap enough to allow Netflix and Apple TV to become a standard capability.”

When it comes to innovations for explorer yachts, owners should keep their eyes on the sky, says Minossi. “Be ready in 2023 when the first low Earth orbit [LEO] VSAT services will be ready for the market,” he says.

Looking into the future, Bond TM’s Robin also cites LEO satellites as a potential game-changer. “LEO internet will soon hit the marine market and it will significantly disrupt the status quo. No exact timing for the market exists yet, but we have been able to speak to both major service operators who are bringing new constellations online in the very near future.”

Talking to experts in the field, it soon becomes clear that there’s no limit to the variety of upgrades now available, whatever the vintage of your vessels. The big difference is owners no longer have to choose between practicality or the wow factor – you can have both.

A Complete Guide to Motor Yachts & Power Cruisers: All You Need to Know!

John Sampson

If you’re looking for a luxury experience out on the water, a motor yacht or power cruiser is the best choice of vessel. It offers you a combination of performance, features, and amenities. While these boats come in a wide variety of lengths, styles, and models, they have something to suit any budget and needs out on the open ocean.

The motor yacht is a status symbol, and there’s a reason why billionaires purchase high-end motor yachts because no other form of transport, except for maybe a private jet, showcases wealth. In this post, we’ll look at the features and design of motor yachts and power cruisers, and we’ll make a few suggestions for top-performing models.

Motor Yachts

What are Motor Yachts & Power Cruisers?

If you’re looking for an ocean-faring vessel for longer seafaring trips, you can’t beat the luxury accommodations and performance offered by motor yachts and power cruisers. These boats can stay out on the water for days or even weeks at a time. They allow for island-hopping in the Caribbean or travel through the South Pacific with ease.

These boats are the pinnacle of class and luxury, making all other vessels, even top-end models like cabin cruisers , look inferior in comparison. Typically, motor yachts and power cruisers have extended lengths compared to other boats, with the smallest models starting at around 40-feet.

Every foot adds thousands of dollars to the price tag of these boats, and a 90-foot model can cost hundreds of thousands if not, millions of dollars. These boats come fully equipped with everything you need to live the life aquatic.

There are purpose-built decks, plenty of cabin space, luxury accommodations for several people, and all the amenities you would find in luxury hotel rooms. There’s a full bathroom and shower, and some models come with hot tubs built into the deck.

The motor yacht is the entertainer’s dream, providing you with TVs, satellite communications, Wi-Fi, and more. There are several categories of motor yachts, including pilothouse, flybridge, sedan bridge, aft cabin, and express-style boats.

The bridge boat is the most popular style in motor yachts and power cruisers. You get plenty of space for overnight accommodations, plenty of deck space, and a helm on the bridge and in the cabin. As a result of the design, these boats fare well in all seasons and all ocean conditions.

A motor yacht or power cruiser relies on its design to categorize the vessel, with elements like cockpits or flybridges and outdoor areas defining the boat. You have plenty of options for diesel and petrol motors, and different hull designs, from planning to full-displacement, determining the speed and handling of the vessel.

Benefits of Motor Yachts

There are several benefits to owning a motor yacht or power cruiser. These boats come with so many features that you have everything you need for life out on the water.

International Sailing

The motor yacht or power cruiser offers you all the luxuries and amenities you need to spend days or weeks out on the water. The larger models can handle long international trips through the South Pacific or the Caribbean, and they have enough fuel capacity for very long journeys.

Suitable for Offshore Sailing

Power cruisers and motor yachts are great choices for offshore sailing. Due to the length and stability of these boats, they can withstand rough ocean conditions in storms. The powerful motors, extra width, and deep hulls on these vessels make them exceptionally stable on the water.

Power and Handling

The power cruiser and motor yacht come with huge engines offering you exceptional power and cruising capability. The long hull on the boat means that they turn slowly and lack the maneuverability of smaller models. However, they have enough power to cut through large swells with ease, and the handling is smooth and steady.

Dynamic Cruising Experiences

These boats are cruisers, offering excellent performance for slow, steady cruising through the islands. The longer models feel effortless to drive, gliding through the water with ease.

Plenty of Storage

The motor yacht and power cruiser come with plenty of storage facilities for all your gear. These boats can accommodate everything you need for your time out on the water, from watersports equipment like skis and tubes to dive gear and fishing equipment. The accommodations come with cabinets and wardrobes, and the kitchen features a full fridge and freezer on most models, with plenty of room for food storage.

Sunseeker Cabin

Luxury Living Accommodations

The yacht and power cruiser offers you the best liveaboard accommodations. The longer the boat, the more luxurious the fittings and finishes. Most models over 60-feet in length will come with multiple bedrooms, featuring queen-size beds. The decks and lounge areas feature plush couches and seating, with split-level designs allowing for shaded dining areas. Some of the largest models offer you an experience that’s more like a floating hotel.

Entertainment Paradise

The motor yacht and power cruiser are entertainers’ dreams. They feature full electronic setups, including TVs, audio systems, plenty of speakers, and loads of deck space to start the party on the water.

Comes with Smaller Boats or Skis for Watersports

Since most power yachts and cruisers are large boats, they are not suitable for getting close to shore. As a result, many of these boats, especially the luxury models, come with jet skis or inflatable dinghy boats that let you get to the beach or take fishing or diving excursions away from the boat.

Full Amenities

Motor yachts and power cruisers feature every amenity you could possibly imagine in a watercraft. As mentioned, the larger models are more akin to floating boutique hotels than a boat. You get full kitchens, refrigerators and freezers, sinks, and some models even have dishwashers. These boats come with the widest range of customizations available for any setup you want.

Multiple Sizing Options

Typically, motor yachts and power cruisers come in lengths from 40 to 90-feet. Models over this length will cost a fortune, and every foot adds thousands of dollars to the price tag of these luxury vessels.

Disadvantages of Motor Yachts

While the power cruiser and yacht offer you the best luxury boating experience possible, they come with a few drawbacks.

Expensive Price Tags

As mentioned, the power cruiser and yacht are the most expensive watercraft available. These boats have starting price tags of around $500,000, with high-end models fetching $10,000,000 or more. They are truly the best boat option for the wealthy elite.

Not Suitable for Water Sports

Due to the vessel’s size and lack of maneuverability, these boats are not suitable for water sports . However, nay models come with smaller boats or jet skis included, allowing for watersports like wakeboarding and skiing. The vessel does serve as a wonderful dive boat, allowing for liveaboard trips through popular dive destinations like the Red Sea and the Caribbean.

Motor Yachts

Expensive to Maintain

Motor yachts and power cruisers come with expensive price tags, and they also cost a fortune to maintain. You’ll also pay a significant sum in annual marina fees to dock your boat.

High Fuel Consumption

Power cruisers and motor yachts have high-powered motors to propel the heavy vessel. As a result, they drink plenty of fuel. Diesel models are available for better economy, while petrol-based models are more for performance. Some manufacturing brands offer green tech motors offering you excellent fuel economy for long trips at sea.

Not Trailerable

Due to the sheer size of these boats, you can’t fit them on a standard trailer. You’ll need to hire a specialist yacht transport service if you need to remove it from the water for repairs.

Top Motor Yacht and Power Cruiser Brands

There are dozens of premium motor yacht and power cruiser brands and hundreds of models available in various lengths. For the purpose of this article, we’re going to look at all of the best models and brands available, regardless of the astronomical price tags associated with these vessels. Here are our top choices for the best power cruisers and motor yachts available.

Benetti is the world leader in superyacht design and construction. Lorenzo Benetti founded the company in 1873, with Azimut purchasing the brand in 1984. The Benetti range is exclusive, with opulent features and luxuries, giving you everything you would expect in a premium model.

Benetti

Relax in luxury and enjoy your time out on the water. Benetti offers you seven models, starting at 95-feet. These boats are custom-built to order, with a long list of customizable options allowing you to set up your boat to your requirements.

Benetti offers custom-made motor yachts in its Mega and Giga ranges, with the “Lionheart” model being one of its most popular luxury models. If you have the budget, and money isn’t a problem, Benetti brings you one of the best ranges of motor yachts available.

As one of the leading brands in luxury motor yachts, Feadship is an acronym for “First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders.” This elite shipyard produces some of the most sought-after models for society’s elite.

Feadship

Feadship has a reputation for being the best motor yacht brand in the world when it comes to custom-built watercraft. Purchasing a motor yacht from this brand is like buying a home; you’ll work with the company to design your ideal boat, fitted with any customization you want in the vessel.

Our choice for the top models in the range is the “M/Y Faith.” This beautiful watercraft is a superyacht for the rich, giving you a 5-star experience out on the water.

This brand is another well-known company with an established reputation in the superyacht market. Founded in 1987, this brand has more industry awards than any other manufacturer, despite its relatively short time in business.

Oceanco

Oceanco makes superyachts for the elite, with some models reaching up to a colossal 420-feet, with onboard jet skis and dinghies, luxury accommodations, and full electronics for navigating the world’s oceans. Oceanco also utilizes green technology in its builds, giving you a motor yacht that reduces your environmental impact on the sea.

This motor yacht company is also the owner of the Benetti brand. While Benetti is the more famous choice, Azimut also designs and builds some excellent watercraft for ocean-going experiences. The recognizable Italian design on these vessels shines through in the build quality, with impressive finishes and styling aesthetics that just scream high-end luxury when looking at the boat.

Azimut

Most of the Azimut range of motor yachts includes cutting-edge electronics and technology. They also offer you a range of hybrid engines for economy and power. The manufacturer also uses nanotechnology in the boat’s coating, giving you a long-lasting vessel that looks fantastic, even after decades of service.

If you’re looking for the best entry-level brand for motor yachts and power cruisers, check out the range offered by Sunseeker. Sunseeker is a recognizable brand in boats, producing a lineup of many models.

Sunseeker

The motor yacht and power cruiser range from Sunseeker offer you smaller lengths, from 50-feet up, with more affordable price tags than the other brands mentioned in this review.

While they may be more affordable than boats from the other brands, you get excellent design and build quality, with materials like carbon fiber on the hull for added strength and lightweight design.

Wrapping Up

If money isn’t an object, and you want the best luxury experience out on the water, a motor yacht or power cruiser offers you the ideal model for your aquatic adventure. You get a boat loaded with every amenity you can think of and full functionality for anything you want to do on the water.

Sail through international seas, visit islands, take long dive trips, or just enjoy a cruise down the coastline. While these boats come with heavy price tags, they are worth every penny if you have the budget and you want a premium experience out on the water.

If leisurely cruising to far away destinations for days at a time with all of the comforts of home sounds enjoyable, then owning a motor yacht may be your vessel of choice. While there are many different styles and brands of motor yachts, these boats are typically found over the 40-foot threshold with some superyachts pushing over 120-feet. Whether a flybridge style or enclosed bridge, motor yachts come in a variety of layouts that include spacious salons, full galleys, multiple cabins with en suite heads, and lots of storage space for extended trips. Many of the larger motor yachts tend to have a captain and crew to run the boat safely and have their own sleeping and eating quarters below deck for the owner's privacy.

While cruising in a motor yacht is typically done in the 8-12 knot range for fuel efficiency reasons, today's yacht owner wants the ability to get to their destinations more quickly. By coming standard with twin diesel engines that can exceed 1,500HP each, a luxury motor yacht can easily cruise at 15-20 knots and achieve even higher top speeds. The changes in design and improved construction techniques have also led to new, innovative uses of spaces on board. Larger windows are now found on most yachts in the salons, big berths in the staterooms offer a more comfortable overnight experience, and many layouts offer en suite heads in all the cabins.

Below are some prominent motor yacht brands:

Yachts usually offer several staterooms and there will be one or more heads (a.k.a. bathrooms) aboard. Then there’s the “galley” - a nautical term for kitchen - and the larger yachts with a flybridge —the open upper deck— may even have an optional outside galley with a grill and sink. A salon - which is our typical living room - is primarily the main inside social space. The larger yachts will have an engine room. You’ll enjoy a yacht’s aft-deck outdoor dining areas, outside helm steering station, and aft deck and bow sunpads to accommodate those lounging moments.

These stylish and modern floating wonders offer a spectacular level of privacy and opulence for the lucky owners. The standard in a yacht: designer interiors, high-end amenities and spacious entertaining areas…

Get ready to do some ocean crossing, island jaunts, or coastal cruising. Decide on heading out for a fun in the sun day cruise, or for some real decompressing - a week. And when the doctor’s orders are to disconnect and stop to smell the roses, you can head away for a month or — when ready for retirement from what’s been heavy on your shoulders —a few years is doable a motor yacht. She’ll allow you to explore all types of destinations from North America to the Bahamas or the Caribbean and far beyond. A yacht is perfect for making a special occasion something extraordinary so make sure to include her as the ultimate venue for entertaining your gang for a lovely luncheon or an evening dinner and dancing cruise. If you have a long weekend or longer open, then head out further with your friends/family to explore uncharted territory and experience days of bliss.

What will this cost… you may be thinking as we wet your appetite for this yachting lifestyle you’ve been invited out on but never thought to join in on your own? Well, the liberty to head out when you want with the friends you choose, is the motivation and, with the right yacht broker guiding you, you’ll be able to find your perfect purchase within your budget. Prices can range from $100,000 to well into the millions depending on the size, age, brand and onboard goodies —especially how she’s powered, and what electronics she features - which all can add some punch to the price.

Take note that this type vessel is made to cruise long distances and feature state of the art electronic navigation and communication packages to help in that feat. Get ready to get educated on the power of these water babies, as they have some sizable engines and generators. For those who have family or friends whose sea legs aren’t quite developed as others, you’ll want to invest in a good stabilization system to avoid the rocking that can make the ride a bit unpleasant.

Up until the 1950s, yachts were primarily made of wood. As we fast forward to modern day, you’ll find the yacht manufacturers using all types of materials from steel to aluminum, or even plywood or veneers.

You’ll find many yacht enthusiasts even charter these yachts for special outings that leave a memorable taste for all. Some owners have been known to enjoy the tax benefits and include theirs in the market’s charter offerings both of which we are able to assist with - as well.

A yacht will offer many opportunities for insane fun. The list is long and includes additions such as hot tubs, dance floors, elaborate up-lit bars, and even wading pools.

The sky is the limit when customizing a yacht, with only your pocketbook limiting you at all. Many choose to have a custom-made yacht built new from scratch - which is definitely an option for those unable to find what they are looking for on the used yacht market. Whatever type or style yacht you choose, you’ll be benefitting in more ways then one with this decision. A yacht will allow you to spend more time with your family - providing them with experiences to last a lifetime. You’ll also find that taking up yachting as a hobby opens you up to new horizons expanding your mind with vividly awesome breathtaking moments. Yachting has been known to reduce stress levels too —picture yourself on your yacht anchored out in the crystal clear blue waters of a remote island and your heart rate calms to a peaceful state just from the thought!

Buying a yacht allows you to be spontaneous and hop aboard at any time for an unplanned trip to see the world on your schedule. We are excited to assist you in exploring the unexplored in the comfort of your own luxury yacht!

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
