Sailing La Vagabonde

This is a sailing YouTube channel that's run by Australian video bloggers Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu. Founded in 2014 when the couple met in Greece, this sailing YouTube channel documents the couple's life aboard their sailing catamaran known as La Vagabonde.

This Australian couple has so far sailed over 90,000 nm across many oceans and is inspiring millions of viewers to explore living on the ocean as an alternative option. This lovely couple sustains its sailing lifestyle publishing weekly YouTube videos. Having received noteworthy media attention for sailing with Greta Thunberg from Virginia to Lisbon to raise awareness on Climate Change issues, the couple has attained patrons who are always willing to fund their travel and sailing expenses.

Onboard the La Vagabonde, they have established roles. Whitelum is tasked with taking care of boat maintenance and sailing logistics such as checking the weather and planning ahead of sailings while Carausu is tasked with cooking, cleaning, and editing the videos.

Sailing SV Delos

When Brian Trautman bought a sailboat 2008, he had never envisioned that he would be so immersed in it that it would become his home; a part and parcel of his lifestyle. More than a decade later, this sailboat has covered more than 70,000nm, visited over 46 countries, and helped in creating more than 200 YouTube videos.

As one of the original and the best sailing YouTube channels, Sailing SV Delos has become a sensation among sailors as it documents the travels and adventures of a lovely crew aboard the sailing vessel, SV Delos. The crew often includes the boat owner Brian, his brother Brady, Brian's wife Karin Syren, and crew member Alex Blue. Tula's Endless Summer

You've probably wondered whether it would be possible to bring your lovely pet to your sailing escapades. Well, a young couple known as Billy Swezey and Sierra Groth have been showing that it's possible and very inspiring thanks to their Tula's Endless Summer sailing YouTube channel.

Their sailing adventure started in 2013 when Billy bought a dilapidated boat in an abandoned boatyard in New York and set about restoring the boat. Billy, who describes himself as a water bug, then met the lovely Sierra in Florida. Since then the couple together with their dog, Jetty, have been inseparable as a Dream Team and have shown the world that taking up sailing as a lifestyle is very possible.

This lovely family has sailed in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and other destinations on their Tula, as well as other boats. Bill describes himself as a jack of all trades who has been surfing, kiting, diving, paddling, and doing everything in the ocean. On the other hand, Sierra is a lovely girl who wishes she had the power of breathing underwater. And what about, Jetty the Gypsy? Well, this dog has seen and done a lot more than most people will ever do in their life.

Sailing Uma

Neither Dan Deckert nor Kika Mevs grow up sailing and never dreamt of buying a sailboat just to cruise around the world. But soon after graduating, this gorgeous couple founded a successful architectural design-consulting firm as a way of earning a living. Fortunately, Dan and Kika soon realized that the rat race wasn't their cup of tea. They both had dreams of traveling the world and seeing for themselves of the earth was a beautiful place. Again, they had been inspired when a friend advised them not to buy a couch!

Having realized that the conventional life wasn't meant for them, the couple bought a sailboat named UMA even though they didn't know anything about sailboats or sailing. They had to Google their way out and restored their lovely boat to their liking. They came up with a 5-year plan to learn step by step before sailing around the world. The plan was to start with a small boat and learn how to sail on a lake before getting a vessel that they could use for their offshore adventures.

Despite the steep learning curve, this lovely couple had solutions to many problems during their sailing escapades and now is showcasing their sailing escapes in one of the best sailing YouTube channels around. So far, they've visited 22 countries, covered 18,358 nautical miles, and have incredibly used zero gallons of diesel.

With one of the most-watched sailing YouTube channels on the internet, Bobby White and his partner Laura began their sailing escapades after Bobby suffered a medical scare in his late 30s. He was good-looking, had a flourishing career as a corporate pilot, flying the rich and famous around the world. He had suffered a stroke and his career was gone just like that!

These YouTube channels are full of some of the world’s special sailing destinations and cover what it takes to get there, including some great technical resource, some of which is specific to a model of boat and some of which is general sailing and maintenance advice.

Sailing Blogs ‘n Vlogs

1. wildlings sailing – vlog.

Previously, Mark and Nadiyana bought an old Sailcraft Cherokee 35 and they made it purr again. Now it’s Mark on his own fixing up a Wharram Pahi 42. Another massive boat project!

The Wildling sailing channel is top entertainment.

It just goes to show, you don’t need a Gunboat to have a blast, this is one of the most genuine channels out there, a great couple fixing up this ketch rigged cat. Go Wildlings!

2. Escapade – Blog

If you can stomach a blog that is going to make you green with envy, then fire up Escapade Sailing which covers Jonathan and Dawn Pooley’s travels onboard their catamaran – an Outremer 51 called Escapade. There are some fantastic shots of the South Pacific on this blog.

3. Sail Puffin, Sail Wilding – Blog

These are great blogs. I first started reading Sail Wilding which is all about Doug and Robins’s travels on their Outremer 5X. There´s some great technical resources in here as Doug is a stickler for detail. Anyway, they sold Wilding and are now cruising around on Puffin , an Outremer 4X. That´s great news for the rest of us, as we get 2 catamaran sailing blogs for the price of one! If you are ever in the market for an Outremer 4X , or 45 for that matter, make sure you read Puffin’s build specifications and options list.

4. Sailing Little Bird – Vlog

5. Ticket to Ride – Blog

Follow this luxury performance catamaran: Ticket to Ride is an HH55 and a lovely looking boat.

The owners previously had a 2013 Fountaine Pajot 44′ but they swapped it for more speed. A lot more speed! All of the posts on the catamaran build are very interesting (eg some of the 2018 posts).

6. Moonwave – Gunboat 60 – Blog

If you have ever wondered what it’s like to live and sail around the world on a Gunboat 60, then you’ll need to check out the Moonwave blog that is run by Sophie who crewed on this catamaran. Follow their travels in Asia, the Caribbean, the US and Asia. Sophie has now left the boat, but the blog still lives on.

7. Sailing La Vida Gypsea (Vlog)

Follow Linda, Kurt and Rigby on their Catana 471: La Vida Gypsea. This is their “Day in the life” episode.

These guys helped us with a Catana 471 Owner’s review so go and check out their Youtube channel!

8. Gone with the Wynns – Vlog

Jason and Nikki have been documenting their travels since 2011 on Gone With the Wynns . The popular couple have been entertaining fans for many years and have managed to develop their vlog production into a full time job under the banner of ‘Cultivate Curiosity’. Good for them!

Curiosity is a 2005 Leopard 43, one of Leopard Catamarans best selling models. They have sold that now and are waiting for delivery of their second catamaran, Curiosity 2, which will be an HH44.

9. Parlay Revival – Lagoon 450F – Vlog

These vlogs follow Colin Macrae who is a Superyacht Engineer on his travels on a Lagoon 450F called Parlay. Colin bought his boat after it had been smashed up in Hurricane Irma and has been fixing it up ever since as well as rescuing a few dogs at the same time.

The boat looks great now and they are on their way to New Zealand via Panama. We teamed up with these guys and did a Parlay Revival Review on their Lagoon 450 in our Owner’s section. Check it out if you are thinking of buying or chartering a L450. Colin is pretty famous for highlighting some bulkhead issues he had on his boat which helped a lot of people fixing up their boats. And p*ssed of  a lot of people trying to sell their 450s. No doubt though, Colin is the real deal and I think will end up thanking him for raising these issues.

You could say he raised a bit of a “sh*t storm”, but all’s well that ends well.

10. Sailing La Vagabonde – Outrememer 45 – Vlog

Well, we had to mention Riley, Elayna, Lenny and Darwin on Sailing La Vagabonde didn’t we? These guys have done so well – they started off in a monohull in Greece where they met, and now they are cruising around on an Outremer 45 with 2 stowaways onboard: Lenny and Darwin. Watch the first video and the last video, and see how much their video shooting skills have developed.

But what am I telling you that for, you have probably watched all the episodes anyway. They have a Rapido 60 on order as the Outremer isn’t quick enough for them!

11. Trade Wind Adventures – Catana 472 – Blog

If you like Catanas, check out Trade Wind Adventures which is all about Annie Gardner & Eric Witte’s travels on “el Gato”, a 2000 Catana 472.

12. The Sailing Family Outremer 51 – Blog Archives

Seth, Elizabeth and their 3 boys on “Archer”, a Ferrari red Outremer 51. They helped us out on a review on the 51 (a good read if you are researching these boats). Head to the The Sailing Family . They have now sold Archer and Seth is working with HH Catamarans , but you can take a look back through their vlogs of their trip around the world

13. TulasEndlessSummer – Crowther Vlog

Billy, Sierra and Jetty (their dog) who were cruising around on a Crowther Spindrift 40, are now on a Seawind 1170. Tula’s Endless Summer  is a fun vlog with some good technical stuff on it as well. Follow them, fixing up boats up along the way. They sold their Crowther and then bought a 1978 DeFever 43′ trawler for $100 which they have also sold.

They are waiting on the delivery of a Seawind 1260, it’s a great channel to check out.

These guys really put the work in fixing up their boats, and they look fun too. Check out the Spinnaker Flying episode where they fly their spinnaker off the bow at anchor (along with some of the crew).

14. Sailing Lady Africa – Dean 365 Vlog

This was Simone and Ricky from South Africa on their 1991 365 Dean Oceanliner Catamaran (they have sold the boat now).

They fixed Lady Africa up nicely (Lithium batteries, new mainsail, new rigging, looks great). If you like technical stuff, there is some great content here on the refit.

15. Sailing Fiesta – Prout Event 34 Blog

Sailing Fiesta is a great account of a journey of one man and his dog around the British Isles on a Prout Event 34. I enjoyed this one! The first catamaran I ever sailed in was a Prout Event, well, other than a Hobie Cat I mean.

Sailing Zatara  is a popular YouTube channel created by an American sailing family from Texas. 

In 2016, Keith and Renee Whitaker decided their family needed a break from corporate America. So they traded their conventional life for a sailboat! 

Joined by their four adventurous children, Anna, Jack, Finn, and Kate – the channel offers a unique glimpse (often with a lot of added humor) into the excitement and challenges of raising a family onboard.

After putting 12,500 nautical miles under their monohull’s keel, this family decided they needed a bit more space, so they upgraded to a 58-foot Privilege catamaran.

HIGHLIGHTS: In April 2023, they completed their seven-year circumnavigation logging over 50,000 nautical miles and visiting 48 countries.

The channel’s vlogs are a delightful mix of travel and sightseeing off the boat, sailing passages, and everyday life – including homeschooling and boat maintenance projects. 

Most recently, the Zatara crew has hosted two groups of young adults for a month on their sailboat selected by an application process.

The Whitaker family’s authenticity and love for the lifestyle shine through in their vlogs, inviting viewers to be part of their extended sailing family. Their channel inspires others to explore the world with their loved ones and embrace a life of adventure.

8. sailing millennial falon.

The  Sailing Millennial Falcon  crew, Khiara and Adam, are from Melbourne, Australia. (Khiara is actually from the UK, but she lived in Austraila for about a decade before they moved aboard.)

Adam wasn’t a stranger to sailing before moving aboard, having raced sailboats with his dad in Perth in his teenage and college years, but Khiara had never sailed before hatching their plan to liveaboard. Turns out she was keen to learn!

Their sailboat Millennial Falcon is a 1981 Tayana 42, which they bought in Florida in 2018.

HIGHLIGHTS: They’ve since visited 26 countries and sailed over 21,000 nautical miles, including the Bahamas and Caribean, as well as the Azores and Europe. They most recently completed a 26-day and 3600 nautical mile sail to Iceland.

This crew tends to keep it real in their videos. You won’t find drama or any unnecessary gimmicks, just great sailing content.

9. sailing ruby rose.

Sailing Ruby Rose  follows the sailing couple, Nick and Terysa, as they sail all over the world aboard their sailboat, Ruby Rose and now Ruby Rose 2.

They’ve sailed everywhere from the Caribbean to the Canary Islands and have done quite a bit of chartering in Australia (Terysa’s home country). 

Nick and Teresa sailed a Southerly 38 monohull for seven years before announcing in 2019 they would upgrade to a sailing catamaran. 

HIGHLIGHTS: These meticulous content creators are known for their catamaran video review series, complete with a rating system, which they created to document the process of choosing their future sailboat.

The Ruby Rose crew recently moved aboard their new catamaran after three years in the build process.

Through a collaboration with Seawind, they tweaked the new 1370 model catamaran and have created the perfect liveaboard performance sailing catamaran for cruising.

Their channel covered the process in detail from start to finish, including the decision-making behind the design choices, changes, and upgrades.

We can’t wait to see all the places Ruby Rose 2 takes this sailing couple!

On the YouTube channel  Sailing Project Atticus , Desiree and Jordan share the highs and lows of their sailing lifestyle, capturing the beauty of the places they visit and the challenges of life at sea.

Their mission statement, “know your world,” encapsulates their deep-seated reasons for both traveling and sharing their remarkable experiences.

This young couple found each other while working on super yachts in 2012, and it didn’t take long for them to hatch a plan to save up and sail the world.

They purchased their first sailboat, Atticus, for a mere $5,000 in Florida. It was a 1963 Allied Seawind 30 and needed a lot of work.

Fueled by passion and determination, Desiree and Jordan spent three years meticulously refitting the boat, turning it into a floating home that would carry them on unforgettable adventures.

As they continued their sailing escapades, the couple found innovative ways to sustain their passion financially. Their newfound skills in boat maintenance and willingness to take on odd jobs along the way provided the means to fund their dream of circumnavigation.

Since then, they’ve added two little crew members, their kids Willa and Bodhi, and have completed a circumnavigation.

This sailing family has cruised all over the world on a 2005 Lagoon 410 catamaran.

From crossing the South Pacific and Indonesia to exploring Madagascar and, most recently, rounding the Cape of Good Hope, they’ve had some fantastic (and wild) experiences along the way.

Whether catching a giant tuna off their stern or fighting off pirates during the night, this crew doesn’t shy away from sharing the exciting and scary moments of living aboard. 

HIGHLIGHTS:  The Nahoa crew recently partnered with New Zealand designer de Villiers Design to build a custom aluminum catamaran perfect for high-latitude sailing.

This couple’s new endeavor to build a custom catamaran exemplifies their unyielding quest for new horizons, less boat maintenance, and high-latitude sailing possibilities.

Sailing Nahoa is a captivating testament to the power of wanderlust and the uncharted oceans that beckon us all.

Sailing Doodles  is a YouTube channel and brand created by Texas native Bobby White. 

Previously a private pilot, Bobby got a wake-up call when he suffered a stroke and could no longer perform his job. Determined to make the most of his circumstances, he chose to seize the moment and embrace a new chapter by purchasing a sailboat.

Sailing Doodles has had a constant rotation of guest crew over the years. And Bobby has become somewhat famous in the YouTube and sailing world for surrounding himself with beautiful women on board.

HIGHLIGHTS: Bobby has owned and sailed many boats over the years, including a motor yacht that he cleverly named “The Dark Side.” This channel features primarily coastal cruising in exotic locations such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean. 

The channel is named for Bobby’s two Labradoodles, Maverick and Goose. Unfortunately, he lost these loyal sailing companions in 2020 and 2022, respectively. (I still hope Bobby decides to add a furry sailing crew back on this channel someday.)

15. sailing magic carpet.

Last but certainly not least on this list, Sailing Magic Carpet  is a captivating YouTube channel that invites viewers to join the journey of Maya and Aladino, a couple with a shared passion for sailing and the open sea.

This sailing couple’s motto is “around the world as slowly as possible,” and honestly, we’re here for it! 

The channel beautifully captures their journey as they navigate the world’s oceans aboard their Swedish sailboat,  Magic Carpet,  a 1976 Vindo 32.

Maya and Aladino’s authentic chemistry and deep affection for the sailing lifestyle radiate in every episode.

Tuning into the Sailing Magic Carpet channel feels like a nostalgic journey to the roots of sailing’s romantic allure and the tranquil beauty of life on the water.

Professionally certified as a boatbuilder , Aladino’s passion extends beyond his craft, encompassing a deep love for freediving and spearfishing, a realm where his heart truly belongs in the embrace of the sea.

Catamaran Sailing Techniques Part 3: Anchoring and picking up a mooring – with Nigel Irens

Catamarans can be a bit frisky at anchor, but multihull expert Nigel Irens has some tips to make anchoring and mooring safer and more comfortable

The general game plan in anchoring on a cat under power is much as it is on a monohull – approach the spot where you intend to drop the anchor from dead downwind and signal to the foredeck when you are ready for it to be dropped.

The only snag is the catamaran’s stubborn desire not to remain in a stable condition head-to-wind in anything but the lightest breeze. It’s just as well, then, that the twin engines allow you to hold station and heading reasonably well, provided you’re firm with the controls and act with as much deliberation as you can muster.

It obviously helps if you can avoid hanging around too long in limbo with no way on – which invites that headwind to take control of the boat.

Keeping your position

Once the anchor is on the bottom you can drop back downwind – once again playing the engine controls to help the boat stay head to wind until the point where you have snubbed the anchor in.

If you’re operating in waters that are free from tidal movement or other currents you might expect to lie head to wind like the other boats around you, but there’s another snag that needs to be addressed before you can feel relaxed about this. The problem is related to the above-mentioned reluctance of a catamaran to lie head to wind, although with any luck your boat will already be fitted with a solution to this one.

What happens is that the boat starts to range around the anchor. This process begins as the bow falls off to one side or the other and the boat starts to ‘sail’ forward – say at about 45° to the wind axis. Eventually the bow will be forced to come head to wind because the direction of travel can only be a radius around the anchor.

Eventually the boat slows down and comes to wind, but because the anchor rode is still pulling the bow to one side the boat tacks through the eye of the wind and sets off with renewed vigour on the other tack.

It’s not hard to imagine that this cyclic pattern can repeat itself until the boat is careering about, taking up much too much space in the anchorage and generally winding up the neighbours. Viewed from above the physics of this phenomenon is not unlike that which makes a flag flap.

The bridle takes the load and the anchor chain to the boat is now slack. Note recovery line

To solve the problem the anchor rode needs to be attached to a bridle rather than directly to the bow roller. This involves attaching one end of a rope to each bow and the middle of the resulting span to the anchor chain or warp. As the bow of the boat falls off the wind axis the tendency is for the rope on the lee bow to take the load as the windward one goes slack.

This asymmetric load will be far more effective in putting the boat back head to wind before it has had time to build up any speed than a single rode to the centreline.

Anchor sequence

You can experiment with the length of the bridle, but something approaching an equilateral triangle (as viewed from above) seems to work pretty well, although the boat you’re sailing probably has the bridle already set up correctly and ready to use.

Clear hand signals are also required when raising the anchor to help the helmsman reduce load on the windlass

So the sequence of events in anchoring is roughly as follows:

• Pick the best looking spot to anchor
• Approach the chosen spot from downwind and give the crew the go-ahead to drop the anchor when you’re in position.
• Move astern downwind as the crew pay out the anchor rode and snub the anchor in.
• Set the bridle and slacken the anchor rode until the load is taken up by the bridle.
• If the boat won’t settle at her anchor for some reason – fickle winds, some unwanted counter current or whatever – you may have to think about laying a second anchor.

This is best done from the tender and although the learning curve might be quite steep, a bit of trial and error could leave you better placed for the day you need to ride out heavy weather from a known direction.

The second anchor should be set so that the angle between the first and second anchor chain is between 90° and 60°.

Picking up a mooring

If you are picking up a mooring rather than anchoring, visibility – or the lack of it – might be a problem, so the old tactic of getting a crewmember to hold the boathook aloft from the forward end of the boat and point it at the buoy is as good a way as any of telling the helmsman what’s happening.

If the buoy you’re aiming to pick up has no rope or chain leader attached to it then it might be almost impossible to get a temporary line through the ring without launching the tender – especially if your freeboard is high. If so there’s a cheeky work-around involving offering the boat up to the mooring stern first.

Using a boat hook to help guide the helmsman to the buoy that you want to pick up. Don’t worry about looking like a whaler about to launch a harpoon!

For a start the helmsman should have both a good view of the buoy and the ability to communicate with the line handler. Once a line has been attached, the helmsman should be able to spin the boat round easily enough so the line handler can to bring a slack mooring line round to the bow as the boat turns – but not so slack as to risk it getting sucked in by the propeller, which could be embarrassing at best and dangerous at worst.

Mooring sequence

A recap on the procedure would read something like this:

• Find the buoy you have been allotted – or choose a suitable one if you haven’t had any specific instructions.
• Bring the boat up to it from downwind and get the crew to bring up the leader with the boat hook, get a temporary line through the eye and secure the free end on a cleat or any other strong point that comes to hand.
• That’s it – you’re safe! It just remains to set the bridle as above and you’re done.

Anchoring or picking up a mooring under sail is more difficult than would be the case in a monohull. This results from that old problem about catamarans being more skittish than monohulls, having more windage above the water and less hull below it.

That is not to say that it couldn’t be attempted when an anchorage is spacious enough and not overcrowded. On the contrary, taking on such challenges in the right conditions helps build confidence and develop the skills necessary to anticipate the way the boat will behave in different circumstances.

Ultimately much of the pleasure that sailing has to offer involves mastering new skills and developing prowess in handing whatever boat you happen to be sailing.

Inevitably doing so involves taking on challenges that will get your adrenalin popping from time to time – as it is meant to do. It was ever thus!

Do’s and don’ts

• DO spend some time practising holding your catamaran head to wind under power.
• DO snub the anchor in properly so that you can feel the boat being tugged forward when you put the engine back in neutral.
• DO make sure your crew are properly briefed about their role in making anchoring and mooring a pleasure.
• DON’T forget to make sure they know they should delay paying out more chain after the anchor has hit the bottom until the boat is visibly moving astern. This avoids the risk of chain piling up on top of the anchor and perhaps fouling the flukes.
• DON’T drop an anchor if there really isn’t enough space. A catamaran needs more space than other boats because it is big and often a bit frisky at anchor.
• DON’T give up too easily – you have an ace card to play in that you draw less than the average monohull so can probably find some clear water that’s no use to them! In tidal waters you can even dry out and have a very peaceful night.

One name stands out when you think of multihull design: the British designer Nigel Irens.

His career began when he studied Boatyard Management at what is now Solent University before opening a sailing school in Bristol and later moving to a multihull yard. He and a friend, Mark Pridie, won their class in the 1978 Round Britain race in a salvaged Dick Newick-designed 31-footer. Later, in 1985, he won the Round Britain Race with Tony Bullimore with whom he was jointly awarded Yachtsman of the Year.

His first major design success came in 1984 when his 80ft LOA catamaran Formule Tag set a new 24-hour run, clocking 518 miles. During the 1990s it was his designs that were dominant on the racecourse: Mike Birch’s Fujicolour , Philippe Poupon’s Fleury Michon VIII , Tony Bullimore’s Apricot . Most famous of all was Ellen MacArthur’s 75ft trimaran B&Q, which beat the solo round the world record in 2005.

His designs have included cruising and racing boats, powerboats and monohulls, but it is multis he is best known for.

After 4 months in the boatyard we have lengthened our catamaran to 37 feet! Here is a finished photo. It was either sell Light Wave and find another boat so we cut our boat right in half and then added a five foot plug so we could create a passageway between the hulls effectively joining the whole boat together. It was a bigger project than we expected (it took 4 months and 1,000 hours…) , but we now have almost a new boat: roomier, faster, and nicer looking. “We set out to envision the boat of the future, unbound by convention yet grounded in feasibility with cutting-edge technology for minimal environmental impact,” designer Fulvio De Simoni said in a statement.

Seawolf X is part of the Italian yard’s newly launched Blue series . Inspired by the way in which phytoplankton harnesses sunlight for energy, the hybrid-electric Blue cruisers use solar panels to capture clean energy and then stores it in advanced batteries to power the engines and hotel load.

Rossinavi says Seawolf X can cruise in full electric mode 100 percent of the time on one-day trips, 90 percent on multi-day jaunts, and 80 percent on transatlantic crossings. In addition, “Hibernation” mode reduces power consumption while the vessel is at anchor and any excess energy generated can be given to a quay or private property. In fact, Seawolf X supplies enough energy to charge up an entire villa, Rossinavi claims. The cat is also equipped with two diesel generators that can quickly recharge batteries. Alternatively, the batteries can be fully recharged with shore power in only five hours.

To top it off, Seawolf X is powered by an artificial intelligence system. Described as “a brain that can learn from observation and predict the needs of guests on board,” Rossinavi AI keeps the environmental impact of the yacht as low as possible by helping the crew to implement more eco-friendly operational changes and monitoring the battery pack to keep it in an ideal range of 20 to 80 percent.

“This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels,” adds Rossinavi COO Federico Rossi.

Wang Chung had no idea John Mulaney ’s six-episode Netflix talk show “Everybody’s in LA” would use their 1985 song “ To Live and Die in L.A. ” as its theme song — but they’re thrilled he did.

“It’s a total surprise that it’s blown up in the way that it has,” says Wang Chung lead singer Jack Hues, who first heard of the usage on “Everybody’s in LA” via “the guy who does our merch.”

“Bill Friedkin said to us in the initial conversations that he didn’t want a theme song,” Hues recalls. “He just wanted instrumental stuff. But once I’d seen the film, the song just kind of popped out, despite his warnings.”

Friedkin eventually embraced the track, even though Hues says the band’s A&R team at Geffen Records didn’t quite know what to do with it. Unlike most songs, the chorus of “To Live and Die in L.A.” goes down an octave. “I think in a way the song is a bit upside down, a bit inverted, in that it’s got a heavy verse, and a gentler chorus,” Hues says. “Usually, it’s the other way around.”

Back in 1985, “To Live and Die in L.A.” narrowly missed the top 40, peaking at No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“It was not a big hit at the time,” Hues says. “It’s one of those songs I think that people find for themselves, rather than it being pushed down your throat. So, it has a more kind of intimate feeling for a lot of people.”

The full “To Live and Die in L.A.” soundtrack featured vocal tracks on one side, and the instrumentals that Friedkin wanted on the other. Wang Chung followed it up with 1986’s “Mosaic,” their most successful album release (featuring their now-classic “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”).

“At the time, we were getting a lot of pressure from the record company to come up with the follow up hit song to ‘Dance Hall Days’ from our [1983] ‘Points on the Curve’ album,” Feldman remembers. “We were sort of slightly struggling to come up with what they considered a big enough hit. So, when Friedkin came in with this project — which was literally the opposite, ‘I don’t want any songs. I just want some gritty instrumental longform music with no vocals’ —it was a breath of fresh air. It’s really stimulating thing to do. The record company was not particularly excited about it. But once we had a title track, they started to get more interested.”

And although the title track wasn’t an immediate smash, it continued to get wider exposure as the film lived on in video rentals. And then, in 1987, Michelob used the song for an ad campaign (with the tag line, “The night belongs to Michelob”) — further cementing its legacy.

“I think we re-recorded it with some slightly different lyrics,” Hues says. “Because my lyric about ‘God not being in heaven’ was probably not deemed appropriate for a beer commercial.”

As Wang Chung has continued to tour, both bandmates say “To Live and Die in L.A.” now gets some of the best reaction from audiences.

“I think that’s why it’s endured really well with our fans,” Feldman says. “Because I think it’s got that something a bit different so it kind of sticks out in a bit more. When we play it live, people love it.”

Hues says the band and Friedkin kept in touch through the years; they last saw the filmmaker in 2019, when Hues and Feldman were on a panel with him in the U.K. “Whenever I was in L.A. I’d see him and sometimes we go to the L.A. Philharmonic,” Hues says. “He was a fascinating man, a really super educated intellectual guy.”

A month after Friedkin died last year, Wang Chung played the Greek Theatre and dedicated their performance of “To Live and Die in L.A.” to him.

The Mulaney talk show actually isn’t the only needle drop that Wang Chung has recently enjoyed in the streaming world: “Dance Hall Days” also plays a role in Amazon Prime Video’s film “The Idea of You,” as the characters played by Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine dance and sing along to the song. (Yes, the Wang Chungassaince is real, so say it together: Everybody Wang Chung Tonight .)

“There’s something about our music that sort of fits well into TV and film,” Feldman says. “We’ve been pretty blessed with how much usage we’ve had in our music.”

Wang Chung is currently embarking on the “Abducted by the 80s” tour with the Motels and Naked Eyes. They’ll also be on a different tour that hits Los Angeles in August — and at that point, they hope to get Mulaney to drop by.

“We’re going to have to reach out to him and set something up,” Hues says. “I’d like to have a conversation with John. At least just to thank him. It’s been great for us. And it clearly kind of put a stamp on his show that gives it something strong.”
