Hinckley Yachts 35 Review

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • March 4, 2022

Hinckley 35

There was a quick, short chop on Long Island Sound near Stamford, Connecticut, on the early fall day I ran the Hinckley 35. It was the kind of chop that could cause a trip to the dentist or possibly rearrange your internal organs—if your ride was not of the sea-slicing variety.

Fortunately, the Hinckley 35 I was aboard runs on a Michael Peters hull form with a fine entry to manage agitated sea states. A moderate transom deadrise, wider-than-average chines and running strakes help with overall stability and lift. And the 35 runs relatively level from its slow cruise to its top hop, aided in part by a longitudinal center of gravity that is right on the numbers set by Peters, according to Scott Bryant, Hinckley vice president of sales and marketing.

Hinckley 35

Additional support comes in the form the 35’s standard Zipwake, a trim system using interceptor blades that are flush-mounted to the hull. The parameters of the boat (such as length, beam and displacement) are entered into Zipwake’s system, and it automatically adjusts trim on the fly. Owners can manually adjust the interceptors too.

This 35-footer has notable speed, thanks in part to a pair of optional 350 hp Mercury outboards. The 35 I got aboard made 40 knots on the pins running at 6,000 rpm with a full load of fuel and a half-tank of water. This thoroughbred-level gallop burns 60 gallons per hour. At top speed—and considering a 10 percent fuel reserve—range is about 180 nautical miles. At 4,000 rpm and a 24-knot cruise speed, fuel burn plummets to 23.5 gph and range jumps to 276 nautical miles.

It’s admirable performance when you consider that those engines are pushing a boat displacing 13,174 pounds. Hinckley also offers Yamaha outboards, and the 35’s standard engines are twin 300s, from either Mercury or Yamaha. At press time, Hinckley had sold 15 hulls, and all the owners had picked the bigger engines, Bryant says.

Hinckley 35

I found the single-lever Mercury throttles smooth and the engines instantly responsive. The boat gets up and goes in a hurry. It’s an agile vessel that runs true with a moderate inboard heel on hard-over turns.

Sightlines are clear in all directions and made even better with the single-pane ClearView windshield. Sitting in the high-gloss teak ladder-back helm seat looking out to the water, I felt no barrier between inside and outside.

Side windows open to let in breezes on fair-weather days, and hatches over the helm and companion seat open as well. Those hatches also automatically close and lock into place.

Hinckley 35

In addition to the helm seats, there are two J-shaped settees abaft the helm for four or so guests and elements-free cruising. The cockpit seating includes two seats forward to port and starboard, as well as a settee along the transom to catch some rays underway. There is stowage under all the seating.

Supporting the vessel’s performance and helping to create comfort underway is robust, tech-savvy construction. The 35 is built end-to-end with vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure. Illustrating its faith in its build process, Hinckley offers a lifetime warranty on its hulls to the boat’s original owner.

The Hinckley 35’s powerplants and build materials may be throughly modern, but this vessel’s lines have a timelessness about them. The 35’s proud bow addresses the ocean, and the profile sweeps down and aft, gently carrying the freeboard lower as it descends toward the cockpit. The effect is one of flow. High-gloss teak toerails accent the lines and this transition—defining it.

Hinckley 35

A trunk cabin harks back to the days when Down East design was boatbuilding, yet it offers some rake forward, adding shape that follows the profile while adding headroom belowdecks. That single-pane windshield is also raked, enhancing the profile even more.

A mirrorlike blue hull quietly states sophistication, as do the high-gloss teak accents abovedecks and the additional gloss teak and satin finishes belowdecks. A teak-and-holly sole in the cabin puts a fine point on the ambience of tradition.

Hinckley has decided that its boat is so complete, the builder needs to offer 35 owners just three options: a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, engine upgrades and teak decks.

Hinckley 35

Another piece of the ownership puzzle Hinckley has figured out is offering owners personalized, concierge-level service. Called YachtCare, the program lets owners tell Hinckley where they want their boat and when, and the company will have a captain deliver the boat to any dock an owner wishes. Additionally, the builder has 10 service locations along the East Coast, so if an owner is on a cruise and has an issue, there’s a service center not too far away. Owners also get a dedicated manager for their vessel; haul-out and climate-controlled offseason storage; a 24/7 hotline; preseason commissioning and launch; and more.

When you consider that the Hinckley 35 is a design that should stay in vogue for the long haul, has performance to satisfy anyone with a need for speed, and has finish work where you can see your reflection at every turn, it’s not surprising that the boat has found early fans. If past is prologue, this is only the beginning of the Hinckley 35’s story.

See Everything

Stepping aboard the Hinckley 35, the first thing I noticed was that I could see straight past the helm and across the water, as if there was no glass in the boat. It was like being outside. The house-spanning, single-pane windshield is called ClearView. Even looking deep into the upper and lower corners of the glass, I couldn’t find any distortion or warping.

Easier Docking

When it comes to close-quarters moves on the Hinckley 35, there are options. The boat comes with a Side-Power bow thruster, so a skipper could adjust the engines and thruster to maneuver into a slip like we did. There is also a joystick, offering the helmsman fingertip control if that is preferred.

Cozy Accommodations

While primarily a dayboat, the Hinckley 35 has a cabin with a V-berth forward. A filler cushion creates real estate for a couple for weekend voyages or longer cruises. Headroom belowdecks averages around 5 feet, 11 inches. A galley is abaft the berth to port and has a single-burner Kenyon electric cooktop, a sink and a GE microwave. The head is directly across from the galley. All in all, the Hinckley 35 is a perfect pocket cruiser .

The Hinckley Company Unveils New Hunt Ocean 76 and 63 Fast Expedition Yachts

Portsmouth, RI (January 8, 2019) — The Hinckley Company, builder of America’s finest yachts, today announced it has fully integrated its Hunt Yachts team into day-to-day operations as it unveils 2 new large expedition-ready yachts in the new Hunt 76 and Hunt 63 Ocean Series. These new Ocean Series yachts have been drawn by the legendary Ray Hunt Design studio with a focus on offshore performance for customers looking to explore new destinations. The first of these go-anywhere yachts has been recently delivered to Europe and two others are currently in build.

“Our new Hunt 76 and Hunt 63 Ocean Series truly are the best performing cruising yachts in the world” said Mike Arieta, President of The Hinckley Company. “With speeds of 30 knots and the ability to handle conditions that would make other yachts shudder, this new generation of Hunt Ocean Series is for customers who want new experiences, to go explore their world making rapid passages and embracing the offshore route to get there” continued Arieta. “We’ve been excited to see that both existing Hinckley customers and existing Hunt customers have placed recent orders for our Hunt Ocean Series. We see customers interested in exploring new destinations most excited about these new yachts” said Pete Saladino, The Hinckley Company’s Chief Marketing Officer.

The Hunt 76 Ocean Series has a hull length of 76 feet 3 inches reaching an LOA of 82 feet 3 inches with her swim platform. The beam is 19 feet 6 inches. Powered by twin Caterpillar C-32 V-12 4-stroke diesel engines with twin turbocharged aftercoolers, the Hunt 76 can reach speeds well over 30 knots and fast cruise at 29 knots. The Hunt 63 Ocean Series has a hull length of 63 feet with an LOA of 69 feet 6 inches with her swim platform. The beam is 18 feet. Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 1350s the Hunt 63 can reach speeds of 31 knots and fast cruise at 26 knots.

Both the Hunt 76 and 63 Ocean Series yachts are available for order now and will be built to customer specifications. Sea trials can be arraigned in both the US and in Europe. See www.huntyachts.com for more information.

label History & Overview

Established: 1928 Located: Southwest Harbor, Maine Construction: Kevlar Category: Motorboats, Sailing Boats, Luxury Yachts Worth Noting: Hinckley is the first American boat company to use SCRIMP technology. In 1928, Benjamin B. Hinckley established Hinckley Yachts in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Henry Hinckley, Ben jamin’s son took over the company in 1932 and by 1980, Henry’s son, Bob Hinckley, was running the company along with his business partner, Sheap McKenney.

Hinckley Yachts was a family company for three generations before selling to Bain Willard Companies in 1997. Hinkley was well known for producing sailboats, and started building powerboats in the 1930’s. During the 1940’s, Hinckley built close to 500 motor vessels for the United States government to use in World War II.

In the late 1980’s, Hinckley made a drastic shift from sail to power, launching the Talaria 39, an iconic Downeast-style motorboat. On the mission for a lighter vessel with a smooth ride, Hinckley was the first American yacht builder to convert from fiberglass to Kevlar in 1991. Hinckley made significant headway in the yacht building industry with the production of the Picnic Boat, an easy to handle boat built for leisure and shallow waters. Dasher was the first Picnic Boat, launched in 1994.

The first American boat company to use SCRIMP technology, Hinckley was the innovator of JetStick and Dual Guard composites. With over eight decades of yacht building experience, Hinckley has seven sailboat models, ranging from 42 to 70 feet, and eight jetboat models, ranging from 29 to 55 feet. ABOUT HINCKLEY YACHTS

Hinckley yachts epitomize quality and elegance focusing on function, speed, and stamina. The Hinckley name is synonymous with quality, strength, and seaworthiness. Exceptional craftsmanship with a simple, elegant beauty that turns heads at every harbor.

THE DREAM - Hinckley Talaria 40 2004

HISTORY OF HINCKLEY YACHTS

Hinckley Yachts began in 1928 in Southwest Harbor, Maine, servicing local lobster boats and yachts owned by summer residents in Mt. Desert Island.  Five years later, founder Henry Hinckley built his first boat, a 36-foot beauty with lines that are still familiar today.

BIG DECISION - 55' Hinckley Talaria 55

Hinckley’s focus on high standards soon had them designing and fabricating their own hardware, a testament to their desire to produce the highest quality boat possible. The graceful lines and glistening brightwork made these yachts distinctive and that tradition carries on today. While beautiful, these yachts have their foundation based solidly on function giving them strength, stability, and maneuverability in rough seas.

SHIPYARD LOCATION

Currently, Hinckley has eight locations in Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Georgia, and Florida with over a dozen more authorized service locations worldwide. Production lines range from 34ft /10.36m to 55ft / 16.81m.

Hinckley 35

Hunt Ocean 63

A pioneer in the use of fiberglass boat building, Hinckley began building boats with the material in the 1950s. Fiberglass enabled them to save weight and add strength. An added benefit was that it allowed the boats to retain their sweeping lines that people had come to know and love. Fast forward to 1994 and the same thinking allowed Hinckley to make the switch to using Kevlar and carbon fiber from stern to bow. Unique Hinckley features include JetStick 3, Heading Hold, and Dynamic Steering.

PRODUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY

As one of the first American builders to adopt SCRIMP (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process) resin infusion, Hinckley remains a world leader. Additionally, they are the only builder using Carbon and Kevlar composite from bow to stern vacuum infused with epoxy and Hinckley is unique in guaranteeing their hulls and decks for life. This focus on materials and engineering applies to both their motor yachts and their sailing yachts.

FOG DOG - 40' Hinckley Talaria 40 2005/2012 Pilothouse

Hinckley yachts are powered by water jets for efficiency and maneuverability. Jet propulsion provides unrivaled handling and is considered the best possible mechanical configuration for joystick applications. Hinckley uses jet propulsion, allowing their boats to operate in very shallow areas or water with excessive debris such as lobster pots due to their lack of appendages below the waterline.  Hinckley’s implementation of JetStick 3 brings military-grade GPS hardware and digital processing to their yachts.

The Next Hinckley Chapter: SilentJet Technology

After nearly two years of innovating, testing, and tweaking, meet Hinckley’s latest innovation: our trademarked SilentJet hybrid technology. Combining diesel and electric power, this industry-first fosters pinnacle moments with those you love in places you cherish. Making its debut on the Picnic 40 S—the only boat available with SilentJet—our new control system allows a completely seamless experience. No plug-ins. No diesel fumes. Only you. The water. And freedom.

An A-ha Moment, Realized

Hinckley’s take on the sound of silence? The ability to spend time on the water with friends and loved ones without the distraction of mechanical noise. Created in collaboration with Twin Disc, SilentJet was born from the desire of Hinckley owners. We know our clients want what’s next, yet also value common-sense solutions. As such, we started developing a hybrid solution almost immediately after the 2017 launch of our all-electric Dasher. Ongoing conversations with Twin Disc led to partnering on the project, and the team developed the final hybrid technology and trademarked it “SilentJet.” The innovation of marine hybrid propulsion was integrated into Hinckley’s JetStick 4 control system and features automatic, industry-first components.

The Experience

Quiet propulsion and less time lost at the fueling dock make SilentJet the best way to spend time on the water. With SilentJet engaged, the Picnic Boat 40 S’s cruising speed is seven knots. Its range? One hour (at seven knots, and up to 90 minutes at 5.5 knots). What’s more, the Picnic Boat 40 S cruises at 35 knots (depending on load) under diesel power.

“With the SilentJet battery engaged, you glide away from the dock in total silence,” says Scott Bryant, Hinckley’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing.  “After an hour or so, the diesel engine comes on automatically until the next time you anchor, and you won’t have to run your generator because the battery has already been charged and you can run everything on it.  You also don’t have to manually charge the battery—the diesel engine will do it for you in just 30-45 minutes of running time.”

Innovation as Motivation

SilentJet is just the latest Hinckley innovation. Since 1928, Hinckley has pioneered beautiful, timeless, and industry-leading yachts. The company has a long tradition of innovation in pursuit of excellence. From the early use of fiberglass in the Bermuda 40 in the 1960s to the adoption of jet drives on the category-defining Picnic Boat, Hinckley has continually worked to combine the latest technology with cutting-edge naval architecture. We achieve, and deliver, what’s next in the private yachting experience.

By The Numbers

  • 2 x 90 Kilowatt (kW) electric motors, 2x Cummins 550hp diesel engines.
  • 1 x 80 kw/h battery which can be charged manually or while under diesel power.
  • 7+ knot cruise under electric power for 60-90 minutes or more depending on speed and conditions.
  • Batteries can support air conditioning and other systems at anchor overnight or longer depending on overall loading (without generator).
  • 30-45 minute charge time while underway. 8-10 hours to charge on shorepower.

What The Editors are Saying

“I have a feeling Hinckley’s SilentJet is going to be one of the biggest innovations in boating that you never heard coming.”

– Dan Harding,  Power & Motoryacht

“…a hybrid version of Hinckley’s much-loved Picnic Boat.  It combines electric power for hushed, low-speed cruising, with the 40mph performance of twin diesels.  It’s working on a strong heritage.  The Picnic Boat has one of the most successful histories of any contemporary American boat.  It launched in 1995 with a profile that was as Down East as any traditional Maine trawler, but with softer curves, lots of wood and much more elegance.”

– Howard Walker,  Robb Report
