How a submersible became the ultimate status symbol for superyacht owners.

Triton Submarines is one of the major players in the submersibles arena

The days when an expensive watch or bag would impress your peers is gone. Now, status symbols revolve around exclusivity and one-of-a-kind experiences. The same applies in the yachting industry where the battle for the longest yacht or priciest interior has, in some circles, been replaced by the most epic charter experiences or the coolest marine gadgets. As such, submersibles, which allow guests to explore the greatest depths of the ocean, have risen to the top of many yacht owners’ wish lists and become the ultimate status symbol.

Triton Submarines is one of the major players in the submersible arenas. Claiming to build the world’s “finest” submersibles, the company offers a wide variety of private and commercial models ranging from $2.8 million to $35 million in price. Patrick Lahey, Co-Founder and CEO of Triton Submarines , gives his thoughts on why submersibles are having a moment and unveils some major discoveries from recent Triton dives.

What makes a submersible the ultimate toy for a superyacht owner?

Patrick Lahey: Social currency has changed in recent years from the materialistic to experiential, so rather than investing in ‘objects’ people now invest in unique meaningful experiences. This can be seen in the changing use of yachts, from status symbols to genuine platforms for adventure and discovery. As yacht use has changed, so has their design, in order to accommodate more onboard assets for exploration when visiting remote regions – like tenders, helicopter and submersibles.

Our clients recognize the importance of exploring the ocean in the safest, most innovative vehicles and tools on the planet. People who buy and use Triton are passionate about the ocean, and our products provide them with the tools they need to make and document new discoveries, understand the future of the ocean, and visit a part of our world we may never have seen before in complete comfort and safety.

Furthermore, a Triton submersible is analogous to a Swiss army knife. A Triton can be configured to do whatever a client is interested in achieving. For example, if a client is interested in filming or documentation, we can and do equip the submersible with the latest technology to ensure they can accomplish these objectives. Likewise, we can equip a submersible to do marine science, archaeology, salvage or leave these features out if the intention is to simply enjoy recreational diving.

Please tell us about some discoveries from recent Triton dives.

In recent years, Triton owners have discovered over 40 new species, dived to the bottom of the world’s five oceans, undertaken the first ever live broadcast from 300m below the ocean’s surface, dived on the RMS Titanic, discovered buried treasure, filmed documentaries watched by billions of viewers, carried Heads of State to read marine reservation declarations live from 200m deep, tagged sixgill sharks for the first time at depth… and no doubt created countless other memorable experiences with their families.

For example, we built the deepest diving sub in the world, The Triton 36000/2 (named the Limiting Factor or LF by our client, and recently renamed Bakunawa by the sub’s new owner - Inkfish). The LF made it possible for this client to safely reach the deepest place in each of the five oceans (The Five Deeps Expedition), a feat never achieved before. While this extraordinary mission was underway, we also mapped 750,000 square kilometers of the deep ocean at a resolution not possible before, collected over 400,000 samples, and identified 40 new species, which benefits all of humanity.

Triton 36000/2

We’re very proud of the achievements and important contribution the majority of our clients make to a better understanding of the deep ocean. Ray Dalio’s Triton sub, the Triton 3300/3 MKII’s operated by OceanX, captured the first ever footage of the Giant Squid in 2011. This same Triton sub completed the deepest dives on the Great Barrier Reef with none other than Sir David Attenborough on board, and this craft was used to film the BBC Blue Planet series, which had a viewership greater than any film of its kind in history.

Which are your most popular submersibles?

Our best-selling model is the Triton 3300/3 MKII of which we have now delivered ten units and is the most successful series-built submersible in history, in terms of both sales and achievements. Carrying three persons to depths of up to 1,000m it is the submersible of choice for adventurers, marine researchers, documentary producers and underwater archaeologists.

Triton 3300

Anyone who has watched the BBC’s Blue Planet, Galapagos or David Attenborough Great Barrier Reef series will be familiar with it. It also recently featured in Will Smith’s Welcome to Earth. The extraordinary capability, reliability and payload of this model makes it a true workhorse that can be fitted out with a remarkable array of additional equipment in order to undertake a wide variety of deep ocean missions.

What new projects is Triton currently working on?

We always have a number of concepts and models under development as part of our ongoing program as part of our commitment to progress how people will experience and engage with the deep ocean for generations to come. Our latest is a collaboration with Espen Oeino International and Dark Ocean Design called Project Hercules. It is a high-performance luxury submersible that will deliver an experience that is best likened to that of a private jet. Project Hercules is unique because it’s a design that we haven’t seen yet in the personal submersible industry.

Project Hercules

How many submersibles have you sold in the last year?

As a private company, we don’t share commercial data, but we can tell you is that we’re experiencing remarkable demand from numerous sectors, including private owners, the cruise sector, high-end hospitality and commercial operators. Our current sales pipeline eclipses the number of units we sold in the company’s first decade.

How is the price of a submersible calculated?

The price of a submersible is dictated by two primary factors, the depth capacity and number of passengers it carries. At Triton we offer a wide variety of models that cover the requirements of both private and commercial operators. From compact two-person submersibles that dive up to 200m and cost $2.8-million to 66-passenger commercial tourism models that are priced at $13.8-million. When we’re talking ultra-deep, the two-person titanium-hulled 36000/2 that has the proven capability of repeatedly achieving Full Ocean Depth, almost 11,000m, we’re talking an investment in the region of $35-million.

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

  • Ultra-luxury cruise line  Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.
  • The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.
  • Emerald, known for river cruises, has been investing more in its ocean-based business.

Insider Today

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

oceans 4 yacht

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

Yes, the ships look like yachts. And yes, they're marketed as such.

oceans 4 yacht

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

Emerald’s upcoming 393-foot-long, 128-guest Kaia would be perfect for fans of small, high-end ships.

oceans 4 yacht

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

oceans 4 yacht

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

oceans 4 yacht

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

oceans 4 yacht

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

oceans 4 yacht

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

oceans 4 yacht

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

oceans 4 yacht

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.

The two architects behind this free-flowing, wonderfully nimble 54-footer are Roberto Biscontini and Lorzenzo Argento, whose creation paves the way for a new generation of high-end cruisers that optimize cockpit and interior layouts without any sacrifices to performance, practicality, or comfort. The yacht carries the unmistakable DNA of the Oceanis range , a delicate balance of form and function that make her as pretty as she is capable, and as focused as she is versatile, equally ready for a fast ocean passage or a leisurely double-handed sunset cruise. With an emphasis on build quality, high-end materials, and the innovative vision that has always been a staple of the BENETEAU brand, the Oceanis Yacht 54 truly represents the pinnacle of the modern monohull cruising design.

NAVAL ARCHITECT : Biscontini Yacht Design

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR DESIGN : Lorenzo Argento

EXTERIOR DESIGN

With a straight stem allowing for more interior volume in the bow, and a maximum beam (16.3 feet) carried further aft, the Oceanis Yacht 54 offers a state-of-the-art, perfectly-balanced hull that maximizes thrills in all conditions. Maneuverability on deck was given special attention, particularly around the cockpit, which modernizes the traditional center cockpit design into a flush layout with distinct areas dedicated to lounging and sailing. Aptly drawn coamings and high bulwarks provide increased safety while transitioning to the foredeck. The spacious swim platform provides access to the sea; when deployed, it reveals that the space below the cockpit stores an eight-foot inflatable tender. The Oceanis Yacht 54 is available with three different drafts: shoal, deep, and performance, which measure 6.4, 8.2 and 9.9 feet respectively.

Interior Design

Lorenzo Argento’s objective in designing the interior was to create a warm, modern atmosphere with as much natural light and ventilation as possible. The Oceanis Yacht 54’s layouts reflect a desire to meet the needs of modern-day owners, through well-engineered, versatile cabin arrangements that provide unrivaled levels of comfort and abundant storage space. Tables and seating areas have been reimagined for both leisure and practicality, as well as access to all major systems and components hides in plain sight. There are two versions available, a 3-cabin 2-head or a 3-cabin 3-head, and both can be built using light oak or walnut.

oceans 4 yacht

Exceptionally Detailed Craftsmanship

Every detail of the Oceanis Yacht 54 has been meticulously designed to become one with the crew and the sea.

She is, at a glance, unmistakably an Oceanis – the mainsail arch, the modern sheerline, the elegant proportions, those distinctive coamings and portholes – and honors her pedigree by continuing to offer the features that have made the range a standard-setter in the industry. A vast array of options, trim levels, rigging and keel setups, and mechanical components ensure she can be tailored to fit the needs of every sailor, and her stylish looks will turn heads in every harbor on every ocean.

oceans 4 yacht

Safe and Easy Sailing

The Oceanis Yacht 54 isn’t just modern on the outside; it is a yacht that is brimming with the latest and greatest sailing technologies intuitively built into her systems, designed to make the cruising experience as easy and as enjoyable as possible. Ship Control, an interface that allows access to boat data and components, is installed as standard. Also available as an option, Dock&Go greatly facilitates engine-powered maneuvering in tight spaces by combining a 360 degree rotating pod with a retractable bowthruster. Under sail, the optional Harken AST (assisted sail trim) automatically trims the sails based on apparent wind, all controlled by a simple display in the cockpit. Shorthanding a 54-footer has never been easier.

Great Ease of Movement

The flush cockpit allows for seamless movement between the companionway and the helm stations. The flow to the aft swim platform and down the gangways to the foredeck is remarkably natural, and the positioning of lines, winches, and controls allows for near-effortless sailing. Sightlines from the helm forward are excellent. The cockpit seats feel comfortable yet snug, though the foredeck sunpad is likely to be the most popular spot on the boat.

Exclusive Trim and Materials

A close inspection of the Oceanis Yacht 54’s engineering and build quality reveals a craft that is decidedly a cut above the rest. Every single aspect of the boat has been carefully planned and nothing has been taken for granted - from the high-quality door fixtures and upholstery, to the exquisite molded woods of the interior, to the aluminum sub-floor that increases rigidity yet saves weight. The owner will be able to choose between two cabin layouts (both with two wood options available) and a palette of upholstery and paneling choices, not to mention the electronic, mechanical, and rigging options. Whatever the choice, on such a beautifully-executed boat, the owner is bound to be one with the boat, and one with the sea.

Caught on camera: Boaters in Boca Raton seen dumping trash into ocean

oceans 4 yacht

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Video taken on Sunday has many people outraged as a group of about 10 people on a boat are seen dumping trash into the ocean in Boca Raton.

The video was posted on YouTube by Wavy Boats, which takes videos of boats riding through rough inlet waters.

In it, two people on the boat grab two large filled trash bins and dump the contents overboard.

The boat is then seen driving away while all the trash is left floating in the wake.

Unregulated disposal of wastes and other materials into the ocean degrades marine and natural resources, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It also poses human health risks.   In the video, the boat is branded Halcyon, registered in Gulf Stream.

WPTV contacted its owner, who declined to comment.

"It's everything you can think of, from bottles to cans to garbage to plastic, everything that can kill the environment. It's awful," said Jill Ofer and Ed Zybert, speaking together, who live alongside the beach. "The plastic will stay in the ocean and that's how you kill the fish and the whole environment. It's pretty outrageous."

WPTV reporters Joel Lopez shows Jill Ofer and Ed Zyber video of trash dumped in the ocean during Boca Bash. April 29, 2024

According to Florida's litter law, those illegally dumping more than 15 pounds of waste into a waterway could face a first-degree misdemeanor.

They could also spend up to one year in jail, pay a $1,000 fine and serve up to one year of probation.   "Fines? It could be a bunch of rich people who money means nothing," said Pavni Sunkara, who saw the video of the boaters. "They should be able to join groups who actually clean this stuff to know what kind of stuff that they're doing."

Pavni Sunkara, who saw the video of the boaters throwing trash into the ocean, said: "They should be able to join groups who actually clean this stuff to know what kind of stuff that they’re doing." April 29, 2024

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission called the incident "illegal dumping of trash" and said it was investigating.

WPTV reporter Joel Lopez asked if the amount of trash will factor into the fines. The FWC said it's under investigation.   "What do you hope happens to this group?" Lopez asked Ofer.   "That they won't have the right to be in the water anymore," she said.   The Boca Bash Instagram page posted on its story that the boaters attended their event.

Boca Bash is an annual event where numerous boats get together and spend the day at Lake Boca Raton.   They released the following statement to WPTV:

"We were first informed of the egregious act when Qualified Captain posted the video. We quickly discovered who the owner of the boat was and several people helping us find them had already contacted the authorities to handle the situation. It is irresponsible boat owners like this that give the event a bad reputation. The Boca Bash regularly asks attendees to keep our waterways CLEAN. It seems the issue was the boaters were paranoid about getting pulled over, which is why we relentlessly ask everyone to pair up with a captain for their Boca Bash trip. We do not condone drinking and operating a vessel by ANY MEANS."

The FWC said WPTV could expect updates on the investigation on Tuesday.

A group of boozed-up spring breakers has infuriated locals in Florida after dumping two huge trash cans full of garbage into the ocean.

The brazen partygoers were likely some of the 10,000 revelers attending the annual Boca Bash over the weekend.

In shocking video footage shared online, the group can be seen emptying trash from their boat into the open water.

“It just really infuriates you to see someone trash the ocean like that,” local resident Rodrigo Samsing told WSVN .

“You know, nobody else on the boat tried to stop them. Everybody was just celebrating.”

“I mean they already had the trash sitting in the garbage can, they could have just put a bag, grabbed a bag, filled it up and thrown it away. Instead, they just dump it carelessly into the ocean. It’s just really sad to see,” he added.

Boca Bash representatives told the outlet that the spring breakers have been ID’d, calling their behavior “completely unacceptable.”

Local police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have launched an investigation into the littering.

The event’s organizers added: “It is irresponsible boaters like this that have zero care for our oceans that give this event a bad reputation.”

The partygoers have yet to be publicly identified or charged.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

82-foot yacht catches fire in Miami

Amanda Batchelor , Digital Executive Producer

MIAMI – City of Miami firefighters extinguished a large blaze that erupted Sunday afternoon aboard an 82-foot yacht.

According to Lt. Pete Sanchez, the department received multiple calls about the fire around 10:50 a.m.

Firefighters responded to Merrill-Stevens Yachts, located at 881 NW 13th Ave., where they found the Vision F2 yacht fully engulfed in flames.

“Firefighters extended hose lines into the covered structure and found multiple yachts in the water near the vessel of origin,” Sanchez said in an email to Local 10 News. “They encountered very low visibility because of the billowing smoke and due to the complexity of the incident a second alarm was requested.” Sanchez said the Hazardous Materials Team and a fireboat conducted a foam operation to extinguish the flames.

He said no one was on board the yacht when the fire erupted.

“Other crews assisted with removing the surrounding yachts out of the area to limit exposure,” Sanchez said. “Within an hour the fire was under control and all exposures were protected from sustaining any damage.”

According to Sanchez, more than 34 units and over 100 firefighters assisted in the operation. He said “the National State Warning Point was notified to conduct an assessment as to what spill off may have occurred into the water.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Viral video of boaters throwing trash into ocean draws outrage from environmental activists

BOCA RATON, FLA. (WSVN) - One day after a video went viral showing a group of teens dumping trash just off the Boca Inlet, the public has responded with outrage.

“It’s shocking, disheartening, a lot of anger, and honestly, the thing that was most shocking to me is the age of the people on the boat,” said Madeline Kaufman of Debris Free Ocean.

The video, captured by the YouTube account Wavy Boats, drew tens of thousands of people on social media to react to the video.

In the video, the group of people dump two garbage cans filled with trash into the ocean and then celebrate the move.

The boat was on its way out of the Boca Raton Inlet on Sunday right as the 2024 Boca Bash, the annual boat party on Lake Boca that takes place the last Sunday of April, was wrapping up.

“They just take huge garbage trucks worth of trash and dump them right into our waterways that are already facing so many issues,” said Kaufman. “I’m a marine biologist by trade, and so just seeing someone do that is just so disheartening and then they go on to celebrate and look at the cameras that are filming them and make some gestures showing that they’re proud of what they did.”

The drone video captures the boat leaving the Boca Inlet, dumping their trash, and then returning to the event. The garbage that was left behind was also captured on camera.

Even though the group of teens cheered when they saw the camera, they didn’t see the potential harm their actions will cause.

“They just dumped lots of cans, bottles, and plastic cups into our ocean where we already have thousands of pounds of marine debris floating around and can impact hundreds of species. They can consume these items and a lot of times, they can’t digest them,” said Kaufman. “Smaller animals can get stuck within bottles and cans and end up dying.”

The boat, Halcyon, out of Gulfstream, is registered to an LLC, Trysail Holdings.

7News appeared at the owner’s home on Tuesday but the owner did not want to comment.

All the teens have been identified as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was notified of an incident involving illegal trash dumping on Sunday at Boca Inlet. This investigation is ongoing and several subjects have been identified. FWC Investigators are working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to identify appropriate charges for this incident. If you were involved in this incident and would like to come forward, please contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. FWC

In a statement, Boca Bash said they’ve identified the group on the boat that dumped the garbage into the ocean and called the actions on the video “egregious” and “completely unacceptable.” They added that “it is irresponsible boaters like this that have zero care for our oceans that give this event a bad reputation.”

Kaufman said she hopes the fallout prevents another dumping in the ocean from happening again.

“I hope that this public outrage can prevent something like that from ever happening again down here,” said Kaufman.

FWC has not release the name or ages of the boaters on video who dumped the trash.

Massive blaze burns at iconic Oceanside Pier

The fire began around 3 p.m., with at least one boat on scene battling the blaze, by eric s. page • published april 25, 2024 • updated on april 29, 2024 at 10:46 am.

Firefighters were called out Thursday afternoon to battle an inferno at the far end of the iconic Oceanside Pier.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. and the firefight stretched overnight and into Friday .

A massive plume of smoke quickly filled the sky , and two fire-fighting boats arrived on scene shooting water cannons at the structure at the end of the pier, where it broadens to support two structures and is called the hammerhead. A lone lifeguard vehicle posted up at the foot of pier, with a long fire hose, possibly two, running the length of the pier.

Although smoke obscured the scene, the building at the end of the pier was burning furiously. The structure was once the site of the Ruby's Diner, which has stood empty since the business closed three years ago. As SkyRanger 7 arrived overhead, smoke was blowing onshore the entire length of the structure.

"The Oceanside Fire Department is currently engaged in fighting a fire on the Oceanside Pier," OFD tweeted out at 3:14 p.m. "We are asking all citizens to please stay away from the immediate area."

Hey, Lemon Grove! NBC 7 Is Going In Your Neighborhood on Thursday

At 4 o'clock, a third vessel had joined the fight as well as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, but smoke continued to pour out all sides of the two-story building as well as beneath the pier, with only a few flames actually visible. Over at the coast, people had started to congregate to watch the conflagration, with some posing for selfies with the historic structure aflame behind them.

Luckily for the crews working on the boats, the surf was only 2-3 feet, easing their efforts. High surf would have vastly increased the challenges fighting the fire.

Fifteen minutes later, Oceanside mayor Esther Sanchez told NBC 7 in a phone interview that "what we know is that the fire teams decided to do a defense tactic and not try to save the restaurant but save the rest of the pier."

At 4:21, a helicopter jointly operated by Cal Fire and the San Diego Sheriff's Department arrived to make a water drop on the structure fire, a very rare sight. By that time, the roof had collapsed on a small structure next to the old Ruby's building, which had been the location of a grab-and-go business called the Brine Box, and flames were starting to escape the confines of the much larger structure, with its roof beginning to visibly char.

PHOTOS: Fire erupts on Oceanside Pier

The firefighting chopper stayed on scene making multiple drops on the inferno, but the fire has resisted all attempts at extinguishing it. Around 4:35, San Diego Fire Rescue's new Triton firefighting vessel arrived to aid in the efforts. Carlsbad, Vista, North County Fire and Camp Pendleton have all sent ground crews to help out as well, officials told NBC 7.

Businesses and restaurants near the pier, including the Famous High Pie at the Top Gun House, were closed because of the on-shore winds carrying smoke and ash to the coastline, the pie shop's operator told NBC 7 around 4:45.

Speaking at a news conference at around 5 p.m., Oceanside fire chief David Parsons said lifeguards were the first to report the fire and firefighters arrived five minutes later. He also stated that the main body of the fire had essentially been knocked down and that they were now focusing on keeping it under control, though the deck was still burning, which is where firefighters were concentrating their efforts.

Despite being warned away, hundreds of people assembled along the coast to watch the fire and efforts to put it out.

"Still have a lot of work to do," Parsons said.

By 5:15, a second firefighting aircraft, this one operated by SDG&E and mostly used to battle brush fires, had been deployed for the pier fire as well, dropping as much as 2,500 gallons at a time. By 5:30 charred pieces of the pier had begun washing ashore.

At a second news conference held at 5:45, Parsons said that fire had been stopped at 15 feet just past the hammerhead.

"This is really, really good news," Parsons said, "and like I said, we think we have forward progress stopped there. What that means is that the vast majority of the pier itself is in good, undamaged condition."

Charred pieces of the pier began washing ashore by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

By 6 p.m., SkyRanger 7 showed a very different scene than when it arrived hours earlier. Smoke still blew at the scene, but was no longer billowing, with the plume was vastly diminished. Small flames could be scene burning here and there, but the fire, in the structure at least, seemed to be largely knocked down. The firefighting boats and Coast Guard cutter remained on station, water cannons still blasting.

Parson said crews would remain on scene into the night, looking for "hidden fire" or hot spots, to prevent the blaze from rekindling.

As of 10 p.m., crews were still battling active fire on the restaurant building and the pier and boats were still in the water, according to Blake Dorse, a division chief with the Oceanside Fire Department. However, officials believe the blaze will stay contained to the pier's end, in part because crews removed several planks of the pier and created a 5-foot trench going across the width of the pier to help stop the fire from spreading east.

Officials believe the blaze will stay contained to the pier's end, in part because crews removed several planks of the pier and created a 5-foot trench going across the width of the pier to help stop the fire from spreading east.

Dorse said a large group will work overnight before another group returns in the morning.

Jessica Waite, the co-owner of the Brine Box, told NBC 7 that the business was open when the fire began.

“Chef Rachel saw smoke coming up from underneath the pier, behind the old Ruby’s building," Waite said. "Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely. We are so sad to see this happening."

Last year,  the city of Oceanside spent $5.5 million  to upgrade aging pipes and electrical systems on the pier, which is 1,954 feet long. The wooden structure was first built in 1888 but has been destroyed twice in its lifetime, once in 1890 by rough seas and, after it was rebuilt, again in 1902.

Thursday's fire is not the first building to burn on the site: In 1976 "a fire broke out in the Pier Fish Market, located halfway out on the pier and in December the Pier Cafe was completely destroyed by fire," according to the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. The current pier was built in 1987.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries. Sanchez, who said the city would rebuild, stated at the news conference that all employees had been accounted for.

Parsons, the fire chief, said that investigators were on the scene but that a cause may not be determined for days.
