RIVA'S EARLY YEARS

More than 170 years ago, the Riva family of woodworking craftsmen began building what are now iconic, classically designed boats. The legacy continues today as the line has grown from elegant wooden vessels to a diverse line of luxury fiberglass pleasure boats and yachts.

The Riva Yachts history began in 1842 when Pietro Riva, a 20-year-old carpenter, left Sarnico, Italy to repair boats at Lake Iseo. His exceptional woodworking skills on a severely damaged boat led to additional work in the region to repair and build new boats .

As he completed orders for fishing and row boats, his business and his family grew. He and his wife, Lucrezia Taroni, had five children: Angelo, Francesco, Ernesto, Erminia and Luigi. The middle child, Ernesto, grew up to learn his father’s trade and join him as a skilled carpenter.

With great foresight, Ernesto believed that future boaters would want bigger boats equipped with engines. To meet that vision, he developed and manufactured larger vessels, and as his hunch proved correct, he built his first motorboat.

Success for the father and son’s expanding business soon necessitated they build a new boatyard. Expansion continued as Ernesto built his own boat, named Sarnico in honor of the family heritage and began the first motorized tourist boat trips on Lake Iseo.

The future of the family business was again secured when Ernesto Riva married Carolina Malighetti and the couple had six children: Francesco, Angelo, Serafino, Mauro, Anna, and Pierina. Middle son Serafino took over the business when Ernesto Riva died in a shipyard accident during a large boat launch in 1907. With a new member of the Riva family at the helm, the company focus again veered - this time from transportation to recreational boats as the availability of small inboard and outboard engines increased.

RACING WITH RIVA - LEISURE AND SPEED RAMP UP IN THE 1920s

When the nautical industry saw a sales boom, Serafino Riva capitalized on public interest by building racing motorboats. Serafino raced his Rivas, and early in the fairly new sport, he exceeded 24 km/h in an outboard speedboat in the Spring of 1912. Riva racing boats continued to be top competitors throughout the 1920s and prominent exposure during events helped to expand the leisure-craft market worldwide.

The family line was destined to continue, at least by marriage, when Serafino married Irma Bocchi and had three children: Carlo, Dafne (who married Gino Gervason who eventually joins Riva), and Marilena.

RACING IN THE 1930s AND 40s WITH RIVA

The Riva name continued to capture headlines during the 1920s and 30s. Prominent in the media were famous friends and competitors, Serafino Riva and Giuseppe Guerini. Each raced in Riva boats with the same outboard engines. Riva boats continued to be popular in the racing sport until political events leading up to World War II caused racing to be suspended in Italy.

During the war, production slowed but never ceased at the Riva facility. Many famous racers competed in Rivas including:

  • Dino Sestini
  • Carlo Pagliano, who set an endurance record in 1938 of more than four hours in an outboard Riva boat with a 250cc engine, with an average speed of 58.54 km/h
  • Speedboat racer Count Metello Rossi di Montelera ran Ronzino to win as an Italian champion in 1935 with a 1500cc engine
  • Serafino Riva won the Pavia-Venice in a Riva boat

6 The most classic Riva launches of all time

The roots of classic Riva yachts go right back to 1842, when a young Pietro Riva began repairing and building yachts on Lake Iseo in northern Italy. But it was his great-grandson, the legendary Carlo Riva , who had the vision to create a range of wooden-hulled speedboats that were to become the epitome of the jet-set era of the 1950s and 1960s.

Carlo Riva was inspired by the products of the American yacht builder Chris-Craft, for which he was an agent, and he used Chris-Craft and Chrysler engines in his classic Riva yachts. We trace the history of the most popular classic Rivas, and round up a few of the most memorable Rivas of all time…

The first twin-engine classic range Riva yacht was the Tritone, in build from 1950-1966. While 221 of the standard Tritone version were delivered, far fewer of the far more desired Super Tritone came into being, with only 21 hitting the water. At nearly eight metres LOA, the Super Tritone was a long, powerful version of Riva’s Tritone, its biggest thus far. The Super Tritone is valued at €200,000-€300,000.

Tritone Special

Riva owners may commonly have been rich and famous, but it was rare to get special treatment; however, Carlo Riva broke his rule in the case of the Como industrialist, champion sailor and Riva patron, Achille Roncoroni. In 1960, Roncoroni persuaded the company to build him a one-off version of the Tritone Special model classic Riva yacht. He wanted the best, fastest and largest Riva ever. What he got was an 8.3 metre wood-clad wonder powered by two high-performance, marinised Cadillac Eldorado V8 engines, each producing 325hp to push the boat to a stunning 60mph. The unique interior had red, white and blue front seats that could be laid flat to let occupants sunbathe away from prying eyes. The dashboard featured sparkling, chrome bezel instruments befitting the Cadillac-powered Special.

Roncoroni used the boat,  Ribot III , mostly on Como, and kept her until 1970 before selling her on to the second owner who has owned this classic Riva ever since. And, true to his word, Carlo Riva ensured  Ribot III  remained a one-off, even turning down a request for a similar craft from King Hussein of Jordan.

The original Riva Aquarama line was delivered from 1962 to 1972. This included first classic Riva Aquarama yacht, of which 288 were sold, and the Super Aquarama, with 203 splashing. The Aquarama Special then emerged, running from 1972 to 1996 with 278 boats built.

The most expensive classic Riva ever built was probably an Aquarama, which crossed the block at Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee, Florida, back in 2011, for an impressive $975,000. Bidders from around the world competed to own the boat, which was considered extra special, because it was the last of the original, wooden-hulled Rivas to be sold to the public. Hull No 774 was completed in 1996 and delivered new to the founding family of the giant Sony Corporation on 23 December 1998.

Surely the ultimate Christmas present, it was one of six “End of the Era” commemorative editions produced. Its owners, however, clocked up fewer than 20 hours aboard her in 12 years, with their most ambitious voyage being a return trip across Lake Garda for lunch.

The Riva Junior was the late 1960s replacement for the basic Riva Florida. At 5.6 metres, the classic Riva yacht model Junior found fame as the choice of the celebrity set such as Brigitte Bardot and Peter Sellers. The Riva Junior is valued at €30,000-€40,000.

Despite the move into fibreglass — and now superyacht-size yachts even — Riva’s current owner, the Ferretti Group, is still passionate about preserving the essence of classic Riva yachts in its new runabouts. In 2001, a year after Ferretti Group purchased Riva, the Aquariva was launched. This 11-metre yacht was specifically designed as a successor to the inimitable Aquarama. Though built in GRP, her sweet exterior lines and wood detail harken back to the days of a bygone era when the first classic Rivas plied the waters.

Launched in June 2016, the Rivamare is the newest addition to the Riva collection. Despite her effortlessly classic styling, the 11.88 metre Rivamare is packed with modern technology, such as underwater lighting, air conditioning, an electro-hydraulic bimini shade and a Seakeeper NG5 stabiliser.

Riva Yachts’ History

Riva Yachts’ history dates back to 1842, when young craftsman Pietro Riva arrived on the shores of Lake d’Iseo to repair fishing boats damaged in a storm. Commissions to build boats quickly followed, and the Italian boatbuilding dynasty that would become Riva Yachts was established. From that tiny shipyard in the town of Sarnico, Italy, Riva Yachts has risen to international prominence as a builder of stylish, elegant vessels that feature state-of-the-art design and advanced performance capabilities. Over the years, Riva Yachts’ exclusive customer list has included kings, sultans, emperors, entrepreneurs, and celebrities from around the world. Riva currently flourishes as part of the Ferretti Group’s portfolio of prestigious luxury motor yachts builders, specializing in open and flybridge motor yachts ranging from a 27-ft. runabout to a luxurious 122-ft. megayacht.

Riva Yachts

Ernesto Riva succeeded his father Pietro, moving the shipyard forward by introducing internal combustion engines on Riva boats. Ernesto’s son Serafino switched the company to building speedboats for the newly popular sport of motorboat racing. Serafino Riva built Riva boats’ reputation as outstanding racing boats by piloting Riva boats to success in many of the top motorboat races of the nineteen twenties and thirties. Riva boats’ reign as the most famous mahogany runabouts in the world was well-established by the mid-thirties, before the looming Second World War stopped Italian motorboat racing and slowed production of Riva’s elegant racers.

Serafino Riva’s son Carlos took over the yard in 1949, transforming the family firm into a renowned builder of exceptional luxury motor yachts. He worked tirelessly to turn the company into the beloved nautical icon it is today, becoming the unquestioned chief architect of Riva Yacht’s success by serving as chief designer, engineer, salesman, and other company roles as needed. Carlos’ uncompromising commitment to quality infused the firm as he built the Riva brand into the yacht of choice for the elite of the world, including royalty, business executives, and screen stars. Over 170 years have passed since a simple carpenter named Riva began building boats in a tiny wooden hut on the shores of Lake d’Iseo. In that time Riva Yachts has become the celebrated iconic brand of the Ferretti Group, shining as an enduring symbol of excellence that represents the best traditions of yachting.

Riva Yachts: how one Italian family created a nautical legend

By paula reynolds | May 2, 2021

riva yacht history

Sophia Loren had one. So did Anita Eckberg and Sean Connery…as did violet-eyed Liz. Brigitte  Bardot’s had zebra print seats, and even George Bush was often spotted in his, breaking waves in the Hamptons. They’ve always been the nautical epitome of cool — and we’re not talking about the owners, but of the craft… the 100% Italian built Riva yacht .

Sleek, sexy, oh-so Italian…these streamlined vessels are known throughout the nautical world for their extraordinary quality, unforgettable design, and well…for having a suave factor that would be off the charts if suave charts existed. Even if you’re not familiar with the name, Riva yachts might hold a spot in your subconscious. Just for a second, visualize a bevy of the rich and famous motor-boating across an Italian lake, Prosecco in hand, or maybe a pulse pounding James Bond clip, our hero soaring over breaking waves as he escapes the ire of his latest nemesis. Odds are your imagination included a Riva built boat.

The Riva name is synonymous with luxury and glamour in the boat world, a brand that defies being classified as “just” a watercraft. It might even be more of a zeitgeist of ideology, of concept, of beauty,  a melding of style and function that make Riva one of the most desirable yacht names around.

riva yacht history

It’s a remarkable story of serendipity and talent that led to the birth of Riva boats. While Carlo Riva (1922-2017) is considered the father of classic contemporary Riva watercraft, had it not been for a run of bad weather on the banks of Lake Iseo in 1842, Sophia would’ve had to settle for a much less classy ride over her Italian lakes.

Heavy rains pummeled the small lakeside town of Sarnico , forcing the River Oglio from its banks. As flooding torrents scoured the village, they carried with them the small fleet of fishing vessels, tumbled about like children’s toys. The humble boats experienced severe damage; immediate help was needed and found through the expertise of a young boatwright by the name of Pietro Riva . Newly arrived from Laglio, Riva quickly set to work repairing and refitting the vessels with skill and quality. His craftsmanship earned the village’s admiration and trust, and eventually Riva opened his own shipyard on the Sarnico shoreline. Pietro’s early production featured quality battel da pesca (fishing boats) and canotto da passeggio (pleasure craft) to suit the needs of the locals, but as his young family grew, so did his vision for his small company.

Pietro’s mastery of boatbuilding was the beginning of a legendary line of shipwrights. His son Ernesto introduced power combustion engines, a forward-thinking step that brought the latest mechanical innovations to the business. His insight introduced not only speedier transportation of goods over the lakes, but the launch of nautical tourism, as well. Ernesto’s own motorboat prototype was a success…and a lot of fun; why not offer tourists the chance to experience the wind, waves, and sights that he was enjoying?

Riva’s visionary heritage continued when Ernesto’s son Serafino took the helm, bringing a major shift to the boatyard. It was after World War I and Italy was ready for distraction. Capitalizing on this, Serafino built and promoted high speed pleasure boats. Equipped for speed and agility, Riva power boats became the hot rod of the Italian lakes. Serafino’s designs quickly set the standard for the popular sport of speedboat racing in the 1920s and 1930s. Riva’s successful incorporation of efficient design and high-powered engines earned fame through multiple wins and titles in Italy and around the world.

“I want to build boats my own way I told my father…I started production in 1950 with six months of testing…It was the happiest day of my life.” ~ Carlo Riva

It wasn’t until Carlo Riva , son of Serafino, took the helm of Riva, however, that the seismic shift in production — and notoriety — began. With the skill, training, DNA, and drive of the Riva dynasty under his skin, Carlo revolutionized Riva design. After some serious head-butting with his father Serafino — who saw no need to change the line’s traditional success —  Carlo succeeded in forging ahead with his vision for a sleek, immaculately built boat featuring flawless functionality and glamorous visual appeal:  the nautical version of Italian flair and desirability. A new manufacturing facility was constructed in 1954 on the shores of Lake Iseo fusing state-of-the art innovation with Riva’s famed tradition for minute attention to detail and quality. Carlo’s vision set into motion Riva’s golden age of luxury watercraft; Riva yachts quickly became the coveted status symbol for those with an eye for ultimate fashion and function.

riva yacht history

The breakthrough, however, that imbedded the iconic Riva style in modern awareness came about in 1962 with the launch of the Acquarama. Using the design protocol of his highly popular Tritone , Carlo reimagined the boat to feature roomier passenger space, a sun deck that seemed to beg for bathing beauties, and other innovations that set precedents in the boating world. His signature feature of turquoise blue upholstery with a matching wheel was the cherry on top. Named #1 of the Top 100 Best Boats Ever by “Motorboat & Yachting Magazine” and “Most beautiful boat in the World” by the International Press, this “Ferrari of the boat world” still quickens the pulse in many whenever she shows up in movies or commercials — or lakeside if you’re lucky enough to witness one slicing through the blue.

Carlo sold his company to an American firm in 1969 yet remained active for several more years. A succession of non-Italian owners finally came full circle in 2000 when the Italian Ferretti Group purchased Riva Yachts. Active in production today, Carlo’s imprint remains strong within the company, evident through the breath-taking style, consummate quality, and suave elegance permeating every Riva boat from cruiser to mega-yacht.

Riva Yachts, a name synonymous with Italian flair and elegance, remains one of the most coveted brands today. Even if owning one is out of reach, it’s possible to get up close and personal with a visit to the Riva Yacht factory in Sarnico. Standing next to Ernesto’s first motorboat, or perhaps feeling your pulse quicken as you admire the Aquarama #784, the last classic model off the production line in 1996, can quicken the pulse of any fan of the beauty of Italian design and innovation. Carlo’s spirit is alive and well on the shores of his beloved Sarnico.

“… Designed with love, pure and strong like a pedigree horse. Unforgettable!” ~ Carlo Riva

“Voglio costruire barche a modo mio, dissi a mio padre… Indimenticabile!” ~ Carlo Riva

A closer look at the history of Riva

Riva is one of the most famous yachting brands in the world, best known for its iconic series, such as the 100′ Corsaro and the 110′ Dolcevita that capture the Italian style of yachting the good life goes hand in hand with. However, in spite of Riva’s success not many people know the history behind this iconic shipyard – even though the Italian brand has been building ships for more than 170 years. Here we take a closer look at how the company came to be one of the most recognised brands in the industry today.

Riva in 1842

Riva was founded back in 1842 on Lake Iseo, in Sarnico-Italy following a sudden storm. Local fishermen were shocked when they saw the damage caused to their fleet and banded together to convince a young shipbuilder to repair their vessels. The craftsman, who had recently moved to the region from Laglio, was none other than Pietro Riva. After winning the trust and respect of the locals once he fixed their boats, he began his shipyard, Riva. The first boats made by Riva were launched in the region on the lake and the shipyard rapidly established a reputation thanks to its stylish and high-quality boats. The shipyard continued to flourish under the guidance of Ernesto Riva, Pietro’s son, who introduced internal combustion engines on Riva boats, paving the way for passenger boats and large cargo to cruise the lake.

Riva in the 1930s / 1940s

However, it was not until after World War I that Riva became the brand we know today, when Serafino Riva, Ernesto Riva’s third-born son, began imprinting Riva products. This marked a turning point in the shipyard’s history, as Riva also started moving away from the production of transportation vessels to power boating. Serafino Riva focused on building motor power boats, promoting leisure crafts at speedboat races. Riva went on to make a number of racing yachts between the 1920s and 1930s, which set a number of records in both international and national competitions, capturing the attention of the entire boating industry.

Riva in the 1930s / 1940s

Later on in the 1950s, Carlo Riva, son of Serafino Riva, elevated the shipyard’s reputation even further by only using materials of the highest quality for its vessels, taking care of the smallest detail and focusing on Riva’s expertise and craftsmanship. Riva’s vessels quickly became objects of luxury and desire for the successful and wealthy and the shipyard started working with designer and architect Giorgio Barilani in 1956. Carlo Riva also foresaw the importance of speed and agility in the industry, driven by the Italian industrial revolution, and created a series of wooden yachts which were characterised by one-of-a-kind design features. These included the Ariston, the Tritone (the first two-engine yacht), the Sebino (which marked the beginning of series production), and the Florida.

Anita Ekberg onboard a Riva in the 50s or 60s

Awarded the prestigious Pioneer of Boating award by Ucina two times, Carlo Riva has been praised by many for inventing, developing, drawing and creating Italian Style motorboats. Throughout the 1950s Riva became widely known for the elegance of form, excellent safety features and mahogany racing boats. But, it was in November 1962 that the real legend behind Riva was born: the Aquarama. Presented at the third International Nautical Fair in Milan, the yacht quickly became a symbol of Riva’s excellence. The name of the vessel was inspired by the Cinerama system, the American experimental wide screens and its slogan featured keywords like: “Sun, sea, joie de vivre!” Aquarama’s prototype was the Lipicar no.1, the successor to the Tritone, measuring 8.02 metres in length and 2.62 metres wide, powered by twin 185 hp Chris-Craft engines, with a speed of 73 km/h.

Riva Aquarama

Five years later in 1969, Riva hit another milestone – the start of its fibreglass production. Riva unveiled its first two models crafted from composite material, the day cruiser Bahia Mar 20’ and the cabin cruiser Sport Fisherman 25’. Both models feature wooden details, in line with the brand’s traditional style. However, in spite of the success of its fibreglass models, Riva’s production of wooden runabouts continues until 1996, which is when the last Aquarama Special, hull 784, was built. In September of the same year, 1969, Carlo Riva sold the shipyard to an American company, Whittaker, but maintained the role of Chairman and General Manager, until his resignation in 1971. These roles were then taken on by his partner, Gino Gervasoni.

Riva in 1962

In 1989, twenty years later, English Group Vickers purchased 100% of the shares of Riva and one year later Gino Gervasoni left the shipyard after 41 years, marking the end of the Riva family presence within the Italian company. Nevertheless, the shipyard continues to maintain the values ingrained into the company by the founding family to this day.

In 1991 Riva showcased the 58’ Bahamas at Genoa International Boat Show, the first yacht designed by Mauro Micheli. Nine years later Riva returned to its Italian roots when the Ferretti Group acquired the shipyard on May 1, 2000, from British finance firm Stellican-Investment Bank. Norberto Ferretti took charge of the company and developed a plan to relaunch both the brand as well as its product, focusing on quality, design and style.

Riva 110 Dolcevita profile

Now, more than 175 years since its foundation, Riva continues to flourish, building larger and more extensive superyachts than ever before. The ongoing success of the Italian shipyard is attributed to many factors, in particular, its passion for developing quality, stylish and elegant vessels. A Riva yacht is always instantly recognizable, as the shipyards roots are intertwined with tradition, innovation and love for crafting unique motorboats. Today, the unmistakable fleet Riva includes the flagship series 110’ Dolcevita, 100’ Corsaro, 88’ Florida, 88’ Domino Super, 76’ Perseo, 76’ Bahamas, 66’ Ribelle, 63’ Virtus, 56’ Rivale, Rivamare, Aquariva Super and Iseo.

Riva has always been at the top of the Richter Scale of cool. The wooden Italian speedboats ooze glamour and sophistication, especially when they were so famously owned and graced by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, Sophia Loren, and power duo Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor–the mid-century equivalent of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Even today, the myth of Riva isn’t just era defining, it’s place defining. To illustrate this, is it possible to picture St. Tropez without sun worshipers celebrating on a Riva boat, or can Lake Como be complete without George Clooney plying its waters in a Riva, evoking a modern day Carey Grant?

Beyond the irresistible jet-set imagery of the Riviera of the 1950s and ‘60s, Riva boats still command smiles and drools today with their contemporary models. And that’s the brilliance of Carlo Riva. Carlo was the great-grandson of Pietro Riva who, 177 years ago, founded the namesake company on Lake Iseo in northern Italy.

Similar to its larger and more famous brothers Lake Como and Lake Garda, the tip of Lake Iseo sits at the foot of the Alps and is surrounded on both sides by screensaver-worthy countryside, villages and vineyards. It’s a place that begs James Bond to chase villains or seduce women on something as appropriate as a shiny mahogany speedboat.

Here in the town of Sarnico, Carlo followed in the footsteps of his father who, after having apprenticed under the original paterfamilias, slowly transitioned Riva from a maker of transportation and passenger craft to pleasure and power craft.

When it was his turn to take the helm, however, Carlo broke with tradition and transformed the small family business of made-to-order powerboats into a global industrialized powerhouse. He did this by looking to the American company Chris-Craft, emulating its processes, but also taking it a step further.

At the time, Chris-Craft was the Cadillac of runabouts – they defined a product and a style. They were handsome, powerful, reliable, and attainable by the burgeoning upper middle class. If Chris-Craft was to Cadillac, it seemed, then Riva would be to Ferrari.

Carlo was very perceptive to the growing demands of a post-war Europe flush with prosperity, and excelled at capturing the collective zeitgeist. He knew there was a market for his vision and so with the boldness of a Caesar, he took a massive risk and built a new ultramodern (not to mention incredibly cool) boatyard on the lake shore – a working monument that still serves as the company’s headquarters today.

Although Carlo implemented a modern assembly-line approach to Riva boatbuilding – a process that changed the fortunes and the future of the company, he never sacrificed the family’s legendary attention to detail (such as aligning every screwhead horizontally, for example).

Even more significant, Carlo became a leader in marine design and application, making his boats not just practical and beautiful but also innovative. This melding of state-of-the-art methods with old-world craftsmanship, combined with Carlo’s innate mastery of image building, propelled Riva to almost immediate international prestige.

As the Italians do so well, Carlo was able to imbue his brand with an intangible essence that evoked all that was desirable. A Riva wasn’t just a luxury boat, it was a lifestyle statement that represented the epitome of la dolce vita. To own a Riva was to live the good life.

In keeping with Carlo’s vision, Riva continues to embrace the latest in modern technology when it comes to building its boats today, with a model line that has grown to include personal speedboats as well as seaworthy yachts. Just as important, Riva also maintains its fastidious attention to detail and infuses each craft with a uniquely Italian spirit.

The signature visual features of a Riva boat and, by extension, the Riva brand are the strips of polished mahogany covering the bow and stern (still finished with 22 hand-applied coats of special glossy sealant) and the famous Riva turquoise blue upholstery. The mahogany details are still present in modern Rivas, although most now sport other upholstery colors than turquoise. Nevertheless, this proprietary shade of seafoam blue is as intertwined with the brand as rosso corsa is with Ferrari.

To visit the boatyard in Sarnico is a pilgrimage in the motoring world, especially for those obsessed with this iconic brand – like me. Treating my special invitation like a golden ticket, I arrived at this hallowed space floating on a cloud. Even more fortunate, it was a Sunday morning when the facility was closed and I was getting a personal tour from the company’s resident historian.

“Here is the first Aquarama,” he says, pointing to the most legendary of all Riva models. “This is Serafino Riva’s (Carlo’s dad) first racing boat, that’s the Aquariva by Marc Newson, and this is the boat done in collaboration with Ferrari.”

As I’m led from room to room, the weight of history only increases and so does my appreciation. “This is where the carpenters carve the mahogany panels, this is where fiberglass components are made, over here in this engine bay are boats nearing completion…”

Riva

But the holy of holies was the personal office of Carlo Riva. Designed by him to resemble the bridge of a ship, the spacious room occupies the uppermost floor of the building and is accessed by spiral stairs of gleaming mahogany. Jutting out above the water, the room is lined with massive windows overlooking the lake – where Carlo could personally see every new boat leaving the factory – and the floor is made of heavily worn, polished wood rescued from an antique ship, complete with rust marks left by the old iron nails.

There’s an ancient ship’s wheel and a large brass engine telegraph (the instrument that has a lever pointing to “full, half, slow,” etc.). Not surprisingly, fabric pillows in the famous Riva blue color line a sofa, stacks of Riva books line the shelves, and the maestro’s long, wide desk sits in the corner surveying the room.

riva yacht history

This handsome command post is supposedly just as he left it. And what’s impressive is that it casually effuses that intangible Riva style – retrospective but modern, high-design but warm, masculine but elegant, thematic but not kitsch. In a word, it’s perfectly balanced – like some form of Italian feng shui.

My private tour inevitably ended but my interest was only heightened. What’s that I hear? I’m welcome to return anytime to have a further look behind the scenes, and an Aquariva had been scheduled to take me an hour up the lake to lunch?

The rain that had been falling outside was starting to let up. As I left Sarnico I could’ve sworn that as I looked back I saw a rainbow in the sky and it fell on the Riva boatworks.

Riva’s First Superyacht

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • Updated: July 28, 2020

In the early 1950s, a young man enthralled with his father’s boatbuilding company took over the family business. As sometimes happens when new generations step in, he wasn’t content to do the same thing his father, or his grandfather, had done. Strong ambition persuaded him to design and build pleasure boats, as opposed to the racing and commercial boats of the shipyard’s past. What’s more, he continuously wanted to outdo himself, focusing on creating motoryachts that were more than boats, as well as status symbols.

While the young Carlo Riva succeeded in all of this after taking the helm of Riva, there’s perhaps no better example of his driving ambition than the period from the mid-1960s into the 1970s, when he launched three limited series of motoryachts.

Not only were their steel hulls a marked change from the glistening mahogany of their sisterships, they were also far larger. The Atlantic series, at 88 feet, and the Caravelle series, at 74 feet, were astoundingly large for their eras. Between their style and the fact that they were faster than many other yachts at the time, they helped Riva find several clients.

More than 50 years later, the spirit of these series lives on with the Riva 50-Meter. It’s the first model in the Riva Superyachts Division and the second Riva constructed entirely of aluminum. At 160 feet, 9 inches length overall, she’s larger than any previous launch from the boatbuilder, but she upholds many of the same principles her predecessors established.

“She is full of personality, exactly like any other Riva yacht,” says Sergio Beretta, CEO and co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, the studio responsible for every modern-era Riva. “It is essentially a true connoisseur’s boat. In a nutshell, it is chic, and that is the whole logic behind it.”

Mauro Micheli, chief designer and co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, agrees. “It is certainly a boat with a very different character to its siblings” because of the LOA and four decks, he explains, “but references to Riva’s signature styling are a constant.”

That styling is well-known and detailed. For instance, Hull No. 1, Race, shows off varnished mahogany and stainless-steel handrails, complementing the metallic painted surfaces. Even the yacht’s wing stations have these handrail details. The richness of the high-gloss wood serves as a reminder that “artisanal craftsmanship is at the very core of each project,” Micheli asserts. “The handrails are the fil rouge [French for common thread] of the yacht.”

Further to the styling’s influences, Micheli mentions the Caravelle line, conceived in 1964. Its uncluttered, simple elegance inspired the team working on the 50-Meter. Though more angular than today’s yachts, the Caravelle had long lines and a proud bow—two timeless characteristics.

“They are the kind of lines that don’t necessarily set out to dazzle but still capture attention with their sheer simplicity,” Micheli says.

For the Riva 50-Meter, the studio focused on classic yet sleek lines. “Race has a great personality,” he says. “She has three straight lines that define each level. The design is clean. We refuse overworked, elaborate and redundant lines.”

Amid these lines are some of the owner’s particular requests. “He wanted lots of light and to enjoy the external panoramas,” Micheli says. While every Riva—indeed, every large yacht—these days incorporates large glass ports, Race’s owner felt it was especially important for the 50-Meter to have them, notably along the main and upper decks. Additionally, in an interesting twist on an indoor-outdoor area, the covered alfresco dining area aft on the upper deck has slide-open glass to each side.

In terms of the open alfresco areas, meanwhile, the owner wanted a front-row seat for when he was approaching shorelines. This explains why Race has cozy seating and viewing spots at the bow and up on the sun deck. Yet another request outside, for similar reasons: a walk-around hot tub and sun pads aft on the upper deck. The owner envisioned standing back here as Race entered a marina and tied up stern-to.

Inside is a relatively customary arrangement, with accommodations for 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms: a main-deck master and four guest staterooms below. However, the owner did request that the galley go belowdecks, with a dumbwaiter connecting it to each of the upper levels. The relocation of the galley permitted more room for the master stateroom.

With Hull No. 2 in the 50-Meter series under construction, Riva is poised to make its mark in the superyacht sector. Larger models are coming too, with the biggest being the 90-Meter (295 feet).

And while Carlo Riva didn’t live to see the 50-Meter launch, having died at age 95 in 2017, there’s no doubt he’d be proud. “The first time that engineer Carlo Riva saw the renderings of the first Riva 50-Meter mega-yacht, he said, ‘I’d like to try and cruise on her,’” Micheli recalls.

Perhaps the once-determined heir to the family business is doing that in spirit.

Notizie e curiosità

A short history of riva boats.

Riva boats are synonymous with elegance, style, and the ultimate comfort – and it’s been like this for decades. When you want something exquisite, well designed, reliable, and durable, Riva is the go-to line of boats and yachts.

It all began in the town of Sarnico

The beginnings of the Riva brand take us back to the year of 1842, in the town of Sarnico, at the shores of Lake Iseo . A big, unexpected storm came down on this small fishing place, and the damage done to the fishing boats was enormous.

It was then that the fisherman urged a newcomer to the town to help them get back on track. The man had recently come to Lake Iseo, from Laglio. He was a shipbuilder, and his name was Pietro Riva.

Pietro agreed to help the local fisherman, and he repaired the boats. But he didn’t stop there. Soon after helping the locals, he went on to build his shipyard and launched the first boats in the waters of Lake Iseo.

A new shipyard business

Not long after he started his new shipyard business, Pietro Riva became well known for his high-quality boats . Pietro’s son developed the company further by introducing engines with internal combustion. More success lay ahead.

In the 1920s, the Riva company started becoming what we now think of it. A synonym for utmost comfort and pure craftsmanship. The third-born son of Ernesto Riva, Serafino, decided to focus more on powerboats and started promoting Riva products at speedboat races, to solidify the brand.

In the following decades, the company became more prominent in the boating world and famous for its beautifully crafted boats and yachts .

Craftsmanship and passion for a new generation of Riva yachts

There came a time for the fourth generation of Riva builders. Serafino’s son, Carlo, realized the importance of paying attention to even the smallest of details . He wanted the design of Riva boats to be crafted beyond anything that the company had done up to that point.

The times were quickly changing, and Carlo wanted the Riva brand to stay ahead in the race for speed boats and yachts. In 1956, he began working with the architect and designer, Giorgio Barilani.

This collaboration soon ushered in a whole new generation of Riva yachts that were known and praised for their beautiful design and features. Those four most famous yachts are the Ariston , the Tritone (which was the first yacht with two engines), the Florida and the Sebino .

But Carlo Riva didn’t want to invest only in luxurious yachts, as he knew that Riva was just as synonymous with speedboats. So he went on to develop a new, Italian style of motorboats .

Design, excellence and style

The 1950s was a time of significant improvement and innovation, but the start of the following decade brought about a breakthrough. In 1962, one of the most famous Riva boats was created. Its name was the Aquarama , and it soon became a hallmark of Riva design, excellence and style.

In 1969, Riva revealed the Bahia Mar 20’ and the Sport Fisherman 25’, the first composite-material models . Yet wooden models remained the most popular and continued being made well into the ‘90s.

A tradition that will continue to flourish

The year 1969 saw another major change. Carlo Riva sold the shipyard to an international company, the Ferretti Group, but remained at the head as General manager until his resignation a few years later. However, the brand Riva continued developing and flourishing. Riva boats still have their unique design, familiar traits, reliability, and a tradition of over a century and a half .

The evolution of a legend

...

VETRORESINA

THE FIBREGLASS ERA AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE YARD (1970 - 1999)

Carlo Riva was an innovator not only in design and style, but also in materials and technologies. From one of his many trips to America, he brought back his discovery of composite materials, whose potential he was the first to see.

Between the 1970s and '90s, the cultural revolution also contaminated style. They were years of experimentation in which the frenetic pace of day-to-day life propelled the myth of speed back into the limelight. On his international travels, Carlo Riva learned about new recreational boating technologies and replicated them in his work as a builder and manufacturer of series produced boats, here too showing his great ability to innovate. It was in the United States that he recognised the potential of fibreglass.

...

Contrary to general opinion, he thought it was the perfect material to have more aesthetic and design freedom, as well as reducing maintenance costs (almost to zero) and increasing production capacity. But it meant becoming familiar with a completely new material that was very different from wood, and for the workers at the Yard it wasn't an easy transition.

The first Riva-branded boat was built in 1969 and the 1970s began with the launch of fibreglass production across the entire range, in collaboration with the American yard Bertram, which had been using the material extensively for years and with excellent results. The first two Riva models in composite material were the Bahia Mar 20 day cruiser and the Sport Fisherman 25 cabin cruiser, followed by the Rudy. These models had exposed wood finishings, in keeping with tradition. In parallel, embittered by the adverse trade union climate, in September 1969 Carlo Riva sold the yard to the US firm Whittaker but remained as chairman and general manager until his resignation in 1971. These two posts were then held by his brother-in-law and business partner (since 1950) Gino Gervasoni. New and old models evolved and the Riva tradition lived on. Carlo Riva nevertheless continued frequenting the Yard for a further ten years as the tenant of "La Plancia", his old office.

In the 1970s, '80s and '90s various new models were launched. The highly successful Superamerica, a sporty flybridge produced in various lengths from 45 to 50 feet, was the first major cabin cruiser and remained on sale for over 20 years. Then came the Riva 2000, the St. Tropez - produced until 1992 - and the Corsaro 58, followed by the Black Corsair and the Riva 32 Ferrari. Despite the success of fibreglass, production of wooden runabouts continued until 1996, the year the last Aquarama Special (number 784) was built. In 1989, a year after the acquisition of 100% of Riva's stock by the UK group Vickers (which also included the Rolls-Royce brand), Gino Gervasoni, husband of Carlo Riva's sister, left the Yard after 41 years. This marked the end of the Riva family's involvement in it. At the 1991 Genoa Boat Show, Riva presented the 58' Bahamas, the first of its boats on which designer Mauro Micheli worked.

...

20' BAHIA MAR & 25 SPORTFISHERMAN

Determined to design something new and with the same passion that had gone into the creation of his evergreen runabouts, Carlo Riva exploited the collaboration with Bertram to start redesigning with style, taste and elegance the deck and superstructure of two boats imported from the USA: the 20' BAHIA MAR and the 25' SPORT FISHERMAN. He managed to soften the appearance of the composite materials with the warmth of wood in the detailing on the hull and superstructure, but also in the interior finishes. The Riva BERTRAM fibreglass hulls were a new development in recreational boating, and yet another example of Carlo Riva's indispensable contribution. Presented for the first time at the 1970 Genoa Boat Show, they aroused the curiosity of owners and experts alike, shocked to see that composite materials too could produce sensations of beauty, balance and harmony. These were unforgettable and emotion-filled moments for the engineer who built the Ferraris of the sea and, with the same ardour and enthusiasm, was about to leave his unmistakable stylistic mark on a new technological era.

The Rudy was an exciting boat that was fun to drive, but above all it was an excellent runabout for water-skiing (also at competition level) and a perfect tender for large motor yachts. It was the first fibreglass boat that Riva built entirely to its own design, and in Italy. In its construction, a Riva Junior was used as pre-mould to speed up the process and guarantee a tried and tested aesthetic appearance.

Superamerica 42/45/48/50

The Superamerica was the forerunner of all Riva cabin cruisers over 40 feet and continued the Yard's experimentation with composite materials. Architect Giorgio Barilani collaborated on this project, which proved to be innovative in terms of both its performance and layout. Carlo Pagani, who had studied under the celebrated Gio Ponti, was involved in designing the refined elegance of the interiors. The particularly innovative circular stairway was later reprised on the Riva 2000, because as well as being highly original, it also freed up more space on board. Other much appreciated features included the roomy cockpit and the second helm station on the flybridge. Riva once again made pioneering use of innovative technical solutions, and the Superamerica became a true cult, a benchmark in terms of clean lines, seaworthiness, comfort, speed and manoeuvrability. It was an expression of absolute superiority, an experience of class yachting based on both spaciousness and intimacy, as well as on the superlative efficiency of the mechanical engineering and instrumentation.

The Corsaro motoryacht's sleek profile transformed large volumes into simple, elegant forms, which not only highlighted the unmistakeable contours but also improved manageability in windy conditions. Its agile and speedy trim concealed an exceptional structure that came into its own in more demanding navigational situations. The interior layout, featuring two large owner cabins, a comfortable guest cabin, crew quarters, an extremely practical galley and the grand saloon with lounge, dining area and bridge, was unimaginable when catching sight of the Corsaro speeding past at 31 knots. And its exquisite finishings were matched by a wealth of equipment and systems, from radar to desalination, plus extended range for long cruises.

...

The Riva 58' Bahamas combined luxury and comfort with versatility and performance. In addition to a top speed of 39 knots delivered by two MAN diesel engines, it offered interesting practical features, such as the hydraulic gangway concealed in the stern and the tender compartment, while the below-deck cabins were furnished in perfect Riva style. Next to the sunbathing areas was a dinette with a mini bar. And to please even the most demanding owner, the Bahamas could be ordered with one of three different layouts, offering the option of a separate dinette, a guest cabin with separable beds or a larger lounge area.

Riva 32 Ferrari

Designed for people who love to ride the waves at high speed, the Riva 32 Ferrari had an innovative design ahead of its time, incorporating the technology and engineering excellence of both Riva and Ferrari. The carbon fibre spoiler was its unmistakable signature, in grand 1990s style. The propulsion system was the result of meticulous testing to achieve maximum reliability and performance in the order of 54 knots using the surface propeller system. The boat had custom Riva instrumentation, a wrap-around anti-glare windshield, anatomical seating, a comfy sofa and a spacious sunpad, colour contrasts and a generous bed below deck in the bow. Another notable, indeed unique, new feature was the first ever electro-hydraulic swim ladder. But the most important innovation in this model was the use of digital design: the Riva 32 Ferrari was in fact the first boat to be built at the Sarnico yard using 3D modelling software (provided by Ferrari Engineering).

The story of classic Riva yachts go right back to 1842 , when a young Pietro Riva began repairing and building yachts on Lake Iseo in northern Italy.

This sporty Riva classic yacht was equally well suited for a day of sunbathing or watersports.

riva yacht history

Featuring a large, sunken sun deck and often seen towing water-skiers, this sporty Riva classic yacht was equally well suited for a day of sunbathing or watersports. The Riva Florida is propelled by a single engine and ranged from 5.59 metres to 6.27 metres in her Super Florida size. Though she was built in Italy, like her brethren, her sun-loving demeanour earned her the moniker of the US “Sunshine State” and was named after Florida as at the time it was the place most closely linked with the sport of waterskiing. In her time in build, 426 Florida Rivas were delivered, including 711 of the bigger and more powerful Super Florida models.

Only one left from 40 boats

Corsaro (1946-55): Only one yacht is thought to survive from the 40-strong pack of the first range of classic Riva yachts. The two-seater Corsaro Riva series was designed by Carlo Riva, based on the AR Sport motor boat. Production started on 1950, and the series ranged in length from 4.8 to 5.65 metres LOA and she was fitted with various engines.

Perhaps the best-known by sight classic Riva yacht.

riva yacht history

Certainly one of the most popular, is the Ariston, which was built for nearly 25 years. The single-engine Ariston measures 6.7 meters and features a distinctive rounded stern and wooden sax board. There were 823 Riva Ariston yachts built and another 189 Super Aristons delivered.

The first twin-engine classic Riva yacht

The first twin-engine classic range Riva yacht was the Tritone, in build from 1950-1966. While 221 of the standard Tritone version were delivered, far fewer of the far more desired Super Tritone came into being, with only 21 hitting the water. At nearly eight metres LOA, the Super Tritone was a long, powerful version of Riva’s Tritone, its biggest thus far. The Super Tritone is valued at €200,000-€300,000.

The rarest Riva speedboat

ribot-iii-is-one-of-the-rarest-riva-speedboats

The most expensive classic Riva yacht

The celebrity’s choice of Riva

riva yacht history

The Riva Junior was the late 1960s replacement for the basic Riva Florida. At 5.6 metres, the classic Riva yacht model Junior found fame as the choice of the celebrity set such as Brigitte Bardot and Peter Sellers. The Riva Junior is valued at €30,000-€40,000.

The modern classic Riva speedboat

riva yacht history

Despite her effortlessly classic styling, the 11.88 meter Rivamare is packed with modern technology, such as underwater lighting, air conditioning, an electro-hydraulic bimini shade and a Seakeeper NG5 stabilizer.

CARLO RIVA, A PIONEER OF EXCELLENCE THE STORY WRITTEN IN DESTINY

Sometimes, behind a great story, there is a destiny. The story of Riva begain in 1842, when a fierce storm battered the Lake Iseo, damaging almost all the boats moored at the shipyard.  Pietro Riva, who had just moved to Sarnico from the town of Laglio on Lake Como, managed to repair them all thanks to his innate skills, accomplishing a miracle.  When he moved from repairs to building, he created absolutely perfect boats, masterpieces never before seen.  Alongside him worked his son Ernesto, who took over the management of the boatyard and set his sights on techonological innovation.  Mounting internal comubustion engines, the yard began producing large cargo and passenger vessels.  Serafino Riva, the third generation of the Riva dynasty, turned to speedboats, an intuition that would mark the future of the brand.  In the 1920s and 1930s, Riva speedboats amassed numerous victories and set unprecedented records both nationally and internationally. The subsequent Riva generation was led by Carlo, who was born in 1922, exactly 100 years after his great-grandfather Pietro.  It was with Carlo in the 1950s that the brand became the undisputed symbol of elegance and status around the world.  The Sarnico shipyard delivered boats that wrote the history of boating and lifestyle and creatd masterpieces like the Aquarama, a vessel that still retains an incomparable appeal 50 years after its first appearance on the Mediterranean coasts. Riva today is synonymous with Italian excellence throughout the world, creating a legacy that is unique in the nautical panorama, which brings back memories of the interantional jet-setters who chose to link their image ro Riva powerboats: Peter Sellers, Ingrid Bergman, Brigitte Bardot, Vittorio Gassman, Sofia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Jean Paul Belomondo, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are just a few of the celebrities of the Dolce Vita. In 2000, Riva joined the Ferretti Group, a world leader in the design, construction and sales of motor Yachts.  The fusion of nautical technology and design delineates the new Riva style, unmistakable in all its froms, from the 27-foot Iseo to the 122 -foot Mythos.  Now as then, Riva continues to ignite a passion that stands the test of time.

Viva Riva: Celebrating 180 years in style

  • September 23, 2022

As Riva honours its 180th birthday in a year marking multiple anniversaries for the shipyard, Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi talks about his special attachment to the brand, its yachts and Carlo Riva himself, as well as David Beckham’s involvement in the celebrations. Words: John Higginson Photos: Ferretti Group

When David Beckham attended Riva’s 180th anniversary gala in Venice, he wasn’t only there to add stardust and glamour to the black-tie event. Certainly, the England football icon – who literally wore a black tie – does attract publicity as one of the world’s most recognisable sporting figures.

While partly due to his looks and media savvy, Beckham’s global appeal is also due to a long and successful playing career, winning 115 caps for his country – over half as captain – and starring for iconic clubs in England (Manchester United), Spain (Real Madrid), USA (LA Galaxy), Italy (AC Milan) and France (Paris Saint-Germain).

However, the 47-year-old was also invited to Riva’s glamorous gala at Gran Teatro La Fenice because he’s a Riva owner and because he starred with Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino and Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc in Riva The Persuaders! , the short film that debuted that evening.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group and a long-time Riva owner, was a loyal viewer of The Persuaders! action-comedy TV series of the early 1970s starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.

Even though he’s a Board Member at Manchester United’s rivals Manchester City, Galassi was delighted Beckham agreed to star in a film that features high-speed action in Ferrari and Maserati cars then Riva yachts against the backdrop of Monaco and the Côte d’Azur.

“I feel very lucky to have David Beckham as a friend and as the star of a Riva production. David is not only a British style icon and one of the world’s most admired celebrities but also a passionate Riva owner,” Galassi says.

“When we invited him to take part in Riva The Persuaders! he immediately jumped on board with great enthusiasm. This enthusiasm shines through in the short film and I believe is one of the reasons for the great response and millions of views it’s receiving on social media.”

BRAND BEYOND BOATING

In fact, 2022 marks several anniversaries for Riva, including 200 years since the birth of founder Pietro Riva and 100 years since the birth of Carlo Riva, his great grandson, who passed away in 2017. It’s also 60 years since the launch of the iconic Aquarama, which sold a staggering 765 units from 1962 to 1996, and was honoured at the gala evening on Venice’s Grand Canal.

In front of the Riva Lounge at the Gritti Palace, an Aquarama was showcased on a floating platform beside the new Anniversario, an 18-boat, limited-edition series honouring the 18 decades Riva has been afloat.

The boat has been further honoured in Riva Aquarama , a new book of photographs published by Assouline to celebrate ‘the 60 th anniversary of the launch of the most beautiful boat of all time’.

The brand’s visibility in wider culture was documented two years ago in the Riva In The Movie short film starring Favino and a 300-page book paying tribute to the 69 films Riva yachts had appeared in.

Riva’s appeal beyond boating – much like Beckham’s beyond football – is also reflected in the growing series of Riva Lounge and Riva Privée ‘destinations’ offering cocktails and branded products in hotels, restaurants and clubs in the likes of Venice, Monte Carlo, Formentera, Mykonos and Palm Beach.

Each is decorated in classic 1950s Dolce Vita style and features hallmark details found on Riva yachts as well as the brand’s aquamarine and mahogany colours, with the latest Riva Lounge based in Porto Cervo over the summer.

And if you need to see a slice of the brand’s history, there’s a 3,200sqft permanent Riva exhibition at the Lake Como International Museum of Vintage Boats, where the seven historic boats include the vintage HaLu from the 1930s, two Series R models, a rare racer fitted with Guzzi engines and a Florida with special Scottish Madras upholstery.

“Riva is really something else,” Galassi says. “It’s the only nautical brand everyone knows, even if they’re not interested in boats.”

THE LEGEND, THE ART

Galassi became CEO of Ferretti Group in 2014 but his connection to Riva spans almost five decades and he understands as well as anyone what makes the brand so special. He owns a Rudy and an Aquarama, and was close friends with Carlo Riva, but his attachment to the brand began back in 1974, when he was 10 years old.

That’s when Galassi’s father and his friend bought a Riva Rudy, a model launched in 1972 and later owned by the likes of actor Sean Connery and Jackie Stewart, the three-time F1 world champion.

Riva, 180, 180th, anniversary, David Beckham, Pierfrancesco Favino, Venice, Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group, Carlo Riva, Gran Teatro La Fenice, Charles Leclerc, The Persuaders, Roger Moore, Tony Curtis, Aquarama, Aquariva, Tritone, Brigitte Bardot, Anita Ekberg, Prince Rainier, Peter Sellers, Britt Ekland, Ariston, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Sarnico, Lake Iseo, La Spezia Ancona, 50Metri, Corsaro, Dolcevita

Sean Connery owned a Riva Rudy, as did Galassi’s father

“My first connection to the Riva myth is linked to childhood, with the enchantment and amazement typical of that phase of life. I’ll always carry in my heart the magical moment when this marvellous motorboat was delivered to the dock of our family home on the Adriatic coast,” he recalls.

“As a child, I was used to spending time on the beach, so I remember the sense of freedom I felt the first time we left the shore behind us and ventured out into the open sea. That indescribable feeling is the same one I still have today, no matter which yacht I’m on. And the Riva Rudy is still ours – I could never part with it.”

Childhood memories aside, Galassi believes Riva is the yachting brand that comes closest to true art on the water, possessing DNA that puts qualities like elegance and style above trends and fashions.

Riva, 180, 180th, anniversary, David Beckham, Pierfrancesco Favino, Venice, Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group, Carlo Riva, Gran Teatro La Fenice, Charles Leclerc, The Persuaders, Roger Moore, Tony Curtis, Aquarama, Aquariva, Tritone, Brigitte Bardot, Anita Ekberg, Prince Rainier, Peter Sellers, Britt Ekland, Ariston, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Sarnico, Lake Iseo, La Spezia Ancona, 50Metri, Corsaro, Dolcevita

The models’ clean lines, luxurious styling and detailed craftsmanship are renowned, drawing eyes wherever Rivas appear across the world. And the timeless appeal of Rivas means loyalty to the brand is often lifelong, as though each owner is buying more than a yacht.

“I’m a great lover of art, from which I constantly draw inspiration. One of my favourite artists is Lucio Fontana, a man of such genius that he managed to make his art appear simple at first glance, while containing a very rich, almost inexhaustible universe of meanings,” says Galassi, an experienced art collector.

“Riva is art. Each new model is a masterpiece, a unique work of art that enchants with its design, its beauty, the novelty of the solutions on board. Riva is also a way of life, a way of experiencing the sea, a badge of elegance you wear as an owner.

“When I look at my Aquarama, I see a true work of art, the result of the genius of Carlo Riva and the all-Italian ability to model masterpieces. I see tradition, innovation and performance, all amalgamated by a timeless beauty I know will never tire me or any other owner.

“And behind all this is a history in which quality has always been an obsession, as proven by the 22 coats of varnish that the craftsmen of Sarnico apply before a boat is ready.”

Sergio Beretta and Mauro Micheli of Officina Italiana Design

Art is also the driving force behind Mauro Micheli, who has designed all of Riva’s yachts for almost three decades since co-founding Officina Italiana Design in 1994. He attended an art-focused high school in Bergamo and then the Accademia di Brera in Milan, only learning yacht design after joining Riva in 1984.

“I never imagined I’d stay with the same brand for almost 40 years. In fact, I didn’t even think I would be a yacht designer – I studied art,” Micheli smiles. “But for me, a boat like the Aquariva is like a sculpture.”

MAHOGANY LADIES

Part of Ferretti Group since 2000, Riva currently produces models across four ranges: Open (27-88ft), Sportfly (66-88ft), Flybridge (90-130ft) and Superyachts upwards of 50m (164ft).

The yachts are built across three shipyards including the seven-hectare La Spezia facility, home since 2004 to all 76-130ft models including the new 102’ Corsaro Super and 130’ Bellissima, a world premiere at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

On Italy’s east coast, the eight-hectare Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona is where Riva’s steel models have been built – including multiple units of the 50Metri – since 2014.

However, the most iconic Riva facility is the four-hectare facility in Sarnico on Lake Iseo in the inland province of Bergamo, northeast of Milan, and where all smaller models from the Iseo (27ft) to the 68’ Diable are produced.

Cantieri Riva in Sarnico on Lake Iseo was founded by Pietro Riva

It’s where Carlo Riva transformed the brand after the Second World War, but Sarnico is also where the business started in 1842 when his great-grandfather Pietro was commissioned to repair fishing boats devastated by a storm, later establishing a shipyard with his son Ernesto.

At the start of the 20th century, the business continued under the leadership of Serafino, Ernesto’s third-born son. In the 1920s, following the First World War, the shipyard started to focus on racing boats, with highlights including a Riva AZ 3 winning the 431km Pavia-Venice race in 1930.

Carlo Riva transformed the brand in the 1950s and 1960s

Carlo Riva joined the family business from a young age and took the lead following the Second World War, launching its first production boat, the Corsaro, in 1946, followed by the Ariston and twin-engine Tritone in 1950 then the Sebino and Florida two years later.

Gino Gervasoni, husband of Carlo Riva’s sister, joined the management team in 1950, while designer and naval architect Giorgio Barilani was another key addition in 1956. Yet the company’s real stars were the ‘mahogany ladies’, as Carlo Riva liked to call his beautifully varnished range of models.

Riva embodied La Dolce Vita on the water in the 1950s and ’60s as it became the boating brand of choice for royalty and celebrities, its appeal only heightened by the 1962 launch of the Aquarama, whose early owners included Sophia Loren.

Anita Ekberg had a Tritone, as did Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland owned an Ariston. Brigitte Bardot had a Junior, while Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton used one as a tender for their 46m Kalizma .

Anita Ekberg also had a Riva Tritone

“Carlo Riva boats will always and forever be the most beautiful and desirable in the world,” Galassi says.

However, by the late 1960s, Carlo Riva started to ease out of the business. In 1969, he sold the company to American firm Whittaker while remaining as Chairman and General Manager. Composite production started with the Bahia Mar 20 and Sport Fisherman 25 in 1970, but he resigned the following year, handing over the reins to Gervasoni, his brother-in-law.

“I had the good fortune to know Carlo well and I’ll always be grateful for sharing part of my journey with him. For me he was a mentor, an inspiration and an example of dedication and ingenuity,” Galassi says.

“He was obsessed with excellence and very strict with himself before he was with others, a quality that took his boats to the top of the world. He was not only a brilliant boat builder and a master of style but also a revolutionary industrialist and a pioneering entrepreneur to whom our country owes much. Riva is part of the heritage not only of the boating industry but of Italy.”

DESIGN & LEADERSHIP

Riva highlights from the 1970s included the Superamerica flybridge model, which launched in 1973 and had a 20-year production run in sizes from 42-50ft. In the 1980s, launches included the Corsaro 60 in 1982, while newcomers included a junior hire who would develop into Riva’s key designer for the following decades.

Micheli was in his mid-20s and had little interest in boats or design when he won a competition in 1984 to become an assistant designer in Riva’s technical office, with the art student going on to work alongside the esteemed Barilani and interior designer Mauro Pagani for many years.

Even Gervasoni was impressed by Micheli’s ability to draw freehand, although the-then CEO eventually left the yard in 1989, so ending the Riva family’s 147-year involvement in the company a year after it was bought by British group Vickers, which included Rolls- Royce.

Under Ferretti Group, Riva’s facilities expanded to La Spezia, where 76-130ft models are built

The 58’ Bahamas, presented in 1991, was the first yacht Micheli worked on. Three years later, he teamed up with Sergio Beretta, a multi-lingual businessman, to form Officina Italiana Design, which has since designed all Riva yachts.

“It’s natural,” says Micheli, when asked about the responsibility of designing for such an iconic brand. “It comes from my own instinct.”

Riva moved into its second golden era after returning to Italian ownership in 2000 when Ferretti Group bought the shipyard from Stellican, a London-based private equity firm. Early Riva models under the Ferretti Group included the Rivarama, a 44ft one-cabin cruiser that launched in 2002 and sold 140 units.

However, when asked for his three favourite designs for Riva, Micheli first names an earlier model, the Aquariva, the retro 33-footer that has sold 260 units when combined with the Aquariva Super, which is among Riva’s current Open models.

“Aquariva is like a car design,” he says. “I’m proud because it has been produced for over 20 years with hardly any changes to the original design.”

His other two favourites are the Rivamare – the 39-footer that launched in 2016 and sits above the Aquariva in the Open range – and the then-flagship 110’ Dolcevita, which debuted at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2018 before turning heads at that year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

The 110’ Dolcevita is among Mauro Micheli’s favourite designs

“I love the Rivamare and also the 110’ Dolcevita, which is totally different, a big boat yet has also had great success in the market.”

Beretta, Micheli’s business partner, says Riva’s unique heritage is ingrained in the design studio, but that the brand and its boats keep evolving, reflected in the move into larger sizes, new technologies and design changes.

Last year, hard tops even began appearing on Open models, firstly as an option on the Dolceriva (48ft) and 56’ Rivale, then as standard on the new 68’ Diable.

A hard top was added to the Dolceriva last year

“Every year, new elements become part of the new Rivas,” Beretta says. “With each model, we try to include a contemporary touch, and this becomes part of the brand. Riva is still classic, but it’s a dynamic brand that’s always evolving, not stuck in the past.”

Beretta pinpoints the flagship 50Metri as an example of Riva’s timeless style, saying it doesn’t have the attention-grabbing features of many similar-sized superyachts but will stand the test of time.

“Riva boats don’t go out of fashion. For example, I think the 50Metri gets more appreciation the more time passes. It was designed with that intention, not to be flashy but long lasting in its appeal.”

Although the scale of the 50Metri distances it from Riva’s classic mahogany runabouts from its first golden era, the brand’s first steel megayacht provides a continuation of Carlo Riva’s vision and ambitions.

In the 1960s, his designs included the Caravelle (74ft) and Atlantic (88ft) series built in the Netherlands, while other designs included the 100ft Vespucci built by CRN in 1978. However, he passed away two years before first 50Metri was unveiled in 2019.

“One of my greatest satisfactions in work coincides with an equally great sorrow, because unfortunately Carlo was never able to see the Riva 50Metri, the crowning achievement of his dream of the steel and aluminium superyacht,” Galassi says.

“When I talked to him about it, he told me, ‘Make her beautiful and make her different, so you recognise she is a Riva’. I think he’d be extremely proud of this unique work of naval art.”

Carlo Riva gave the brand an unrivalled legacy in yachting. And with the company now well into its third decade under Ferretti Group, the signs are strong that Riva is in good hands as it navigates its way towards its 200th anniversary.

“Without a doubt, Riva will maintain its global appeal in the coming decades. Riva is a timeless icon of beauty, which has passed through various eras, gaining more and more fans and acclaim,” Galassi says. “‘I’ve got a Riva’, ‘I’ve seen a Riva’. These are words that will always make the heart beat faster.”

122’ MYTHOS

This is the first yacht by Riva completely built in light aluminum alloy, as well as the largest yacht in the world ever produced by the historical Italian brand, an icon of the world yachting industry. It is 122’ Mythos, Riva's new flagship: an over 35 ton aluminum construction, of 37 meter overall length and 7.60 meter beam. About 100,000 man/hours have been required to build it, with 50 people working on average for 18 months. These few but very meaningful figures bear witness to how the Riva brand, which became globally known due to its legendary wooden motor yachts - symbols of the Dolce Vita and icons of truly unforgettable times - is now marking a new milestone in its history. From mahogany to fiberglass, from fiberglass to aluminum, the Riva brand keeps evolving, in terms of both yacht size and applied technology, and can now boast one of the widest and diversified ranges worldwide, featuring as many as 12 different models between 27 and 122 feet, including open, coupé, and flybridge yachts. “We are both proud and amazed - commented Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group’s CEO - , every day I feel how important it is to meet the highly demanding task assigned to me by Weichai Shareholders to take care and re-launch this leading brand of the world boating industry. As an Owner of a Riva yacht myself, it is as if a new child or a new travel companion had joined our Riva family. A family which would well fit in a novel by Garcia Marquez: with a more than a century old history made up of a multitude of different lives and experiences, disseminated all over the world throughout all these years. Celebrating the new ‘Heir’ of this history, namely the 122’ Mythos - the brand’s flagship as well as its most futuristic product - is simply extraordinary. We believe that with everybody’s efforts within the Ferretti Group, we will succeed in taking this ‘newborn’ and the Riva brand as a whole to even higher goals, while getting stronger in all our loyal markets and penetrating new emerging ones. Indeed, while Riva is an icon of Made in Italy production, ingenious design, production excellence, and much appreciated style, from now on the 122’ Mythos will be its standard-bearer.” CONCEPT & DESIGN The 122’ Mythos draws inspiration from the 86’ Domino - a real long seller of Riva coupe yacht range – whose main stylistic features have been taken up and revamped on this almost 38 meter long yacht. The 122’ Mythos is the outcome of the collaboration between yacht Designer Mauro Micheli – the founder, together with Sergio Beretta, of Officina Italiana Design (which designs Riva’s entire range), AYT&D - Advanced Yacht Technology & Design, Ferretti Group’s research, style and product development centre, and the Interior Design and Technical Department of CRN, which was in charge of the interior and naval project development. This flagship is a ‘100% Riva’ model, as confirmed by its clean lines, a painstaking care for details, the selection of traditional and yet ‘evergreen’ materials - like steel, wood and leather -, which give every Riva yacht a unique, timeless flair. “Talking about a boat is always more difficult than designing it. The concept and lines of the 122’ were conceived in about 10 minutes; what really makes a difference and makes this model truly unique is the time devoted to defining its details. The 122’ Mythos stems from pure instinct - this is why I am convinced it will be successful for a long time, just like the Aquariva, the Rivarama and the Rivale, which are still being produced after so many years.” This was one of Designer Mauro Micheli’s first statements on the new flagship yacht. ”I saw it a few days ago in Ancona and I am increasingly sure of this. This is Riva’s flagship, which I believe to be absolutely worthy of being part of this great brand”. The 122’ Mythos, with its stunningly balanced and refined outer lines and essential interiors, is presented in “Regal Silver” color, a brand new light gray hue, specially designed for this model to further highlight its dynamic and sleek profile. Some “Bright Black” superstructure details provide additional contrast to the yacht’s aesthetic presence, and contribute to its uniquely sleek and elegant style. LAYOUT & DECOR The first 122’ Mythos features the optional 3-cabin version, specially requested by its Owner for its true luxury lies in its spaciousness and privacy. The standard version proposed by the shipyard has 4 cabins, and an additional optional layout with 5 cabins is also available. Main Deck The main materials used on this yacht include Canaletto walnut, in a light, softer shade - and specially selected by the Owner for all the yacht interiors - leather and chromium-plated steel, in line with Riva’s traditional style. Every detail is characterized by essential, clean lines, which result in a timeless, extremely natural and yet elegant style. The large uninterrupted glazing, which runs along the entire main deck, offers a breathtaking panoramic view and lets in plenty of light into the day area, connected to the raised pilot station and to the forward galley. The salon and the dining area have been conceived as an open space; the living area features 3 white leather sofas and 2 armchairs in a contrasting brown shade all signed by Cappellini. The 55" TV, which can be completely concealed in the ceiling, is placed inside one of the two – starboard and port – lacquered and steel panels at the entrance to the salon when coming through the glass door from the cockpit. The living area also features a large coffee table designed by OID and lined with dark brown leather, a carpet by Bottega Conticelli, and a couple of “Atollo” lamps by Oluce, also to be found in the Owner’s suite. The dining area is furnished with a large steel and glass table with 10 dark brown leather Minotti chairs, in pleasant contrast with the steel and white lacquered details. At the end of the open space, a white niche with its top lighting hosts a walnut and lacquered cabinet. On both starboard and port sides there are two doors: the right door leads to the lobby with a head and the stairs leading below deck, while the left door opens into a spacious, comfortable full-beam galley, entirely furnished with white lacquered furniture and, considering the great number of electric appliances available, reflecting the Owner's love for cooking and for practical solutions. Thanks to the dinette, featuring a table seating 5/6 people, and its great spaciousness, this area is very pleasant and can be enjoyed throughout the day. Walking further down, just before the crew quarters, there is a cold room, with some more household appliances and an additional technical area. Lower Deck On this first Riva 122’ Mythos, the very practical layout is further enhanced by the Owner's decision to have a spacious master stateroom and only two guest cabins. All three cabins are amidships, to ensure maximum comfort also when cruising, while the crew quarters - consisting of a captain’s cabin with en suite bathroom and discreet shower stall and two twin crew cabins, - are located forward. The full-beam master stateroom is the typical expression of Riva’s unique ‘style’. It is furnished with square and sober, natural wood furniture with dark brown (“Africa") leather and chromium-plated steel details. Opposite the bed, placed at the center of the cabin, a low rectangular unit hosts the 46” TV with concealing mechanism and several storage compartments. Under the side glazing are a small starboard living area with a couple of brown leather couches and a wooden coffee table in between, and a portside office area with vanity/large central desk lined with leather and low side cabinets. The wardrobes in alternating colors, which run along the walls in front of the bed on both sides of the cabin, are very capacious and functionally organized. The master bathroom comes in a very original layout fully customized for the Owner, and divided into 4 different areas, with portside bathroom and separate toilet, two mid-ship washbasins in white Thassos marble (the same material used for the floors). Above the washbasins there is a steel and Corian container and a mirror with led lights from an overhead panel and two steel sconces by Flos at both sides. In two separate starboard areas, there are the shower stall and the sauna. Contrasting hues of bathroom furniture create an intriguing play with colors and light, where dark Laminam highly contrasts with some lighter details such as the bleach white sauna bench. The VIP cabins, which mirror each other, one to starboard and one to port, have been furnished to match the style of the master stateroom, and are both fitted with a spacious bathroom and separate shower stall. The large side glazing ensures great brightness along the entire lower deck. Outdoor areas and sundeck The outdoor areas of Riva 122’ Mythos are striking for their extraordinary elegance, spaciousness, and functional layout, and allow Owners and guests to enjoy cruising in the utmost comfort. The stern cockpit includes 2 large L-shaped sun pads, coffee tables and a teak and steel dining table with seating for up to 10 people. From the cockpit access can be gained to the aft swimming platform, which separates the two garage doors. The garage can fit a more than 5 meter tender and a jet-ski on the right-hand side. A special electrical-hydraulic platform has also been installed, allowing for safe diving into the sea from the aft platform and easily launching of the water toys. A large portside cabinet in the cockpit is well equipped to cater for outdoor cooking and dining. The upper deck can be accessed from the cockpit using an external staircase and has been designed to offer the Owner and his guests unmatched comfort. The first 122’ Mythos yacht features a large Jacuzzi, sided by a comfortable aft sun pad and a bar unit to the bow. In front of the bar another spacious C-shaped aft-facing sofa . Steering from the forward flybridge offers perfect viewing of yacht operations that can also be followed from three side-by-side seats in front of it. RIVA & CRN The 122’ Mythos is also the symbol of the long-standing partnership between two historical and iconic Ferretti Group brands: Riva, which in 2012 celebrated its 170th anniversary, and CRN - the Group’s shipyard specializing in the construction of fully-custom mega-yachts in steel and aluminum between 40 and 90 meters - which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Through the 122’ Mythos, Riva and CRN, two leading players of the international boating industry, are breathing new life into their more-than-40-year old partnership dating back to 1970, when Carlo Riva decided to terminate his agreement with a Dutch shipyard and establish a partnership with CRN. A decision that proved to be successful and that between 1970 and 1978 led to the construction of six 23.50 meter motor yachts in the Marco Polo series and two Vespucci models (a 90 footer and a 100 footer) designed by Carlo Riva Yacht Division. TECHNOLOGY & PERFORMANCE The aluminum planning hull can reach top recorded speed of 28,5 and a cruising speed of 26 knots , thanks to two MTU 12 V 4000 M 93L, 3510 mhp engines. This is a high-tech planning yacht ensuring great comfort and top performance in its class. The high-tech shaft drive propulsion system is fitted with an elastic free standing gearbox to ensure maximum comfort and noise and vibration reduction. Propellers have been designed for utmost efficiency and outstanding performance in terms of both consumption and range. Maximum comfort is also guaranteed by the American Boat Thruster stabilizing system. 122’ MYTHOS CERTIFIED ‘GREEN PLUS YACHT’ BY RINA INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT In the design of the new Riva flagship, maximum attention was given to environmental impact reduction: several construction solutions have been adopted for which RINA has issued the voluntary “Green Plus” Class Notation. Launched in October 2008, this new Class Notation takes into account several environmental impact issues, including Co2 emissions, for both commercial and pleasure vessels. The “Green Plus” Class Notation is granted to all vessels for which significant investments have been made in new design solutions, on board outfits and equipment, and in the adoption of procedures, which, in addition to meeting minimum international standards, contribute to improving a vessel’s environmental protection performance. Based on a scoring system rather than on compliance with mandatory requirements, the Green Plus Notification approach offers designers sufficient flexibility in deciding the most appropriate solutions to achieve maximum emission reduction. The “Green Plus Yacht” certification actually assesses 12 different pollution sources - 6 for airborne and 6 for waterborne pollution – and identifies any technical, design or equipment solutions likely to prevent them. Each of these solutions is then scored and summed up in order to determine the vessel’s overall environmental impact, on which a different Green Plus Class will be assigned. This system is also encouraging research and the use of new ‘green’ technology: in order to obtain the certification, innovative solutions, in addition to those already listed in the classification rules, are assessed and scored by RINA’s experts. On Riva 122’ Mythos, in particular, the following construction solutions have been adopted: energy saving LED lighting; particular focus on waste handling procedure through solid waste source-sourcing and discharge of sewage (black and gray water), in compliance with an environmental protection plan; high-tech engines with low particulate matter and NOx emissions.
