Sailaway: The Sailing Simulator

Sailaway: The Sailing Simulator

I can count on one hand the number of things I thought I really, really wanted, right up until the moment I tried my hand at whatever it was. As an example, I had always dreamed of having an open-cockpit biplane. Just imagine the freedom of the wind blowing in your face, the sounds and smells of the engine, the unrestricted visibility—the sheer aerial romance of it all!

Then I tried it. That wind in your face? It’s a veritable blizzard that is doing its very best to blow your eyelids over the top of your head like a ski hat. The sound of the engine? Ha! You can’t hear it with that same blizzard pounding in your ears like a jackhammer. The visibility? It serves only to show how slow you’re going—that engine is burning 14 gallons of fuel per hour to go barely faster than the cars you can see on the roads below. It’s quite a bit of expensive fuel to burn just for that wonderful engine sound that you cannot hear.

You don’t want to get me started on the dream of an oceangoing sailing catamaran. A week-long live-aboard sailing school on a 38’ catamaran told me all I needed to know about serious sailing: it’s hard work, quarters are cramped, and it is oh-so-easy to clog the little seaborne toilet. I didn’t even consider signing up for the second week.

Oddly enough, though, losing interest in the “real thing” does not always equate with losing all interest whatsoever. I still enjoy the idea of open-cockpit biplanes and complex sailboats, as can be seen by my affinity for the Bucker Jungmeister in one of my best flight sims, and the 38’ cruising catamaran brought to me by Sailaway – The Sailing Simulator, a full-on sailing sim developed by Orbcreation. It is the latter than we are here to discuss.

catamaran sailing simulator

Sailaway offers a variety of boats to use, ranging from a small daysailer to high-end racing boats to world-spanning ocean cruisers. These boats can be sailed just about anywhere on the planet. The planet in question is, of course, Earth, and there is nothing unusual about that, but...the planet is modeled as an online persistent world shared with all of the other virtual sailors using Sailaway. Rather than sailing along all alone in a wide expanse of ocean with nothing to see but the distant horizon, you sail along all alone in a wide expanse of ocean with nothing to see but the distant horizon. Unless, that is, you want to enter a race or host another sailor on your boat. It is the multiplayer aspect that demonstrates the need and utility of a shared planet. With a shared world, everyone around you is experiencing the same time of day, the same weather, and the same winds. That simplifies the racing immensely. A persistent, always-on world also allows for long-range sailing. You probably aren’t going to be able to sit at your desk for the entirety of a cruise from Seattle to Honolulu, but with the Sailaway world running 24/7, you don’t have to. There is a lot of good stuff the persistent world brings, but it can create a number of problems for the dedicated offline player.

Consider, for example, the desire to jump into a smaller boat somewhere near the Hawaiian islands. Your vision is a clear, sunny afternoon with light breeze to give you a smooth, relaxing ride. You teleport your boat to a point just off the Maui coast, and...you are met with pitch black skies and heavy seas. Beyond that, you have no ability to change those things, other than waiting six or seven hours for the weather to (maybe) improve and the sun to arise over the eastern horizon. “Authenticity” is not always synonymous with “playability.” This is very definitely something to be aware of before purchase. To put this in another context, it is very similar to iRacing versus Project Cars 2. iRacing shines as an online multiplayer racing sim, while Project Cars 2 is far more of a single-player type of sim. If you can only choose one, be sure to make an informed decision.

catamaran sailing simulator

To continue the parallel with iRacing, Sailaway has online sailing races, and just like with iRacing, the formal races are scheduled in advance, meaning you have to wait for the race, show up at the specified time, and hope you do well in the race after waiting so long for it. Also like iRacing, you can practice alone, or you can set up a custom multiplayer race of your own. Sailaway also prides itself on the realism and fidelity of their simulation physics, boldly stating that “Sailaway gives players the most realistic digital sailing experience to date with in-depth simulations of weather, wind and currents while your boat and its sail are modeled to give even the most experienced sailor a workout.” And finally, just as with iRacing, I can only take their word for that—I don’t have the decades of experience that would be required to make a cogent and compelling argument against their claims. All I can say is that it behaved as my limited experience with actual sailing indicated that it should.

This potential complexity does not make Sailaway unapproachable for the novice and/or wannabe sailor, though. There are a number of helpful tutorials included, although they are short and provide just enough information to allow a neophyte to get started. There are also difficulty settings that range from “you had better know what you’re doing” to “I’ll do everything up to and including holding your beer while you steer.” In between those endpoints, there is a “you steer and manage the sheets as you wish, but I’ll whisper hints in your ear as we go” mode. This final mode is the one that I found to be the best fit for my personal skill level; I can get the boats to move and go where I want them to, but not as efficiently as a more experienced skipper. Hints like “take in one reef on the mainsail, furl the Genoa and raise the Jib sail” were welcome, although at times I just chose to ignore them.

catamaran sailing simulator

In its current form, Sailaway hits the rocky shoals when attempting to provide realism to a PC audience: complexity in a vehicle typically requires complex controls. Racing sims, flying sims, military sims: they all require complex and often expensive peripherals to allow the player to interact with the complexity of the machine. Flight simmers need HOTAS systems and rudder pedals, racing sims only come alive with a good force feedback wheel and an equally good set of pedals, and military sims require decent voice comms with squadmates. Sailaway has none of that. At this point in time, Sailaway is very hard to manage alone. Note that large and/or powerful sailing vessels actually are extremely hard to manage alone, so this is not a surprise, but it is again something to be aware of.

My first attempt at Sailaway was with the mouse alone. While it is possible to interact with the boats with nothing but the mouse, it is very awkward. The sails can be operated by clicking on the rope associated with it (these are called “sheets” because everything on a boat has a name different from the identical objects on land—they don’t even use "left" and "right") by clicking and dragging with the mouse, but doing so requires panning your view (also with the mouse) to get the sheet in sight. The clickpoints were hard to find, and the easing or pulling motion was hard to master. I eventually opted to use the mouse only for looking around and the keyboard for operating the sails. That worked better, but felt clunky. There is also game controller support, but I didn’t want to use that at all. The development roadmap has a “maybe” item on it for adding TrackIR support to make it easier to look around, but I’m not sure it’s going to work—you need to be able to turn all the way around at times and TrackIR is severely limited in its rotational range. It seems to me that VR is a possible solution to all of this, but that isn’t on the roadmap currently.

catamaran sailing simulator

As a game, there are far better options for the virtual sailor. VR Regatta is an excellent example. As a simulator, well...that’s harder to answer. I feel that it did an adequate job of simulating the movement of the boat through the water and its response to various settings on the sails, but sailing is so much more than that. Provisioning, navigation, anchoring, etc., are major aspects of cruising and are absent from Sailaway. Capsizing in high winds is a constant risk in the real world but it is absent from the sim. As far as racing, I was unable to give it a try—there’s no tutorial for it, and my attempt at a practice race was thwarted by my inability to find the starting line. A huge aspect of sailboat racing comes down to the rules of right-of-way, which are wielded as sharp knives in racing and often require decisions from judges—there do not appear to be any authorities to plead your case to in Sailaway.

All is not lost, though. There is still active development going on, so some of what I consider to be gaps or faults may yet show up in a future update, but for now Sailaway seems to be at least partially lost at sea. Some of the fundamentals are in place and working well, but control is difficult and 6,000-mile cruises are visually boring for 5,998 of those miles. Sailaway will appeal to a select audience, but casual sailors will want to look elsewhere.

It its current form, Sailaway is an adequate way to learn about complex sailing vessels, travel the world by sea, and race online with other skippers. It is fairly straightforward to learn, but the limitations of controlling a complex boat with a keyboard and mouse are very evident. Sailaway is not for the casual player.

About Author

I've been fascinated with video games and computers for as long as I can remember. It was always a treat to get dragged to the mall with my parents because I'd get to play for a few minutes on the Atari 2600. I partially blame Asteroids, the crack cocaine of arcade games, for my low GPA in college which eventually led me to temporarily ditch academics and join the USAF to "see the world." The rest of the blame goes to my passion for all things aviation, and the opportunity to work on work on the truly awesome SR-71 Blackbird sealed the deal. My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 1 that I bought in 1977 when they first came out. At that time you had to order them through a Radio Shack store - Tandy didn't think they'd sell enough to justify stocking them in the retail stores. My favorite game then was the SubLogic Flight Simulator, which was the great Grandaddy of the Microsoft flight sims. While I was in the military, I bought a Commodore 64. From there I moved on up through the PC line, always buying just enough machine to support the latest version of the flight sims. I never really paid much attention to consoles until the Dreamcast came out. I now have an Xbox for my console games, and a 1ghz Celeron with a GeForce4 for graphics. Being married and having a very expensive toy (my airplane) means I don't get to spend a lot of money on the lastest/greatest PC and console hardware. My interests these days are primarily auto racing and flying sims on the PC. I'm too old and slow to do well at the FPS twitchers or fighting games, but I do enjoy online Rainbow 6 or the like now and then, although I had to give up Americas Army due to my complete inability to discern friend from foe. I have the Xbox mostly to play games with my daughter and for the sports games. View Profile

What's new in Sailaway III

Sailaway iii.

Sailaway III is a virtual sailing environment. A realistic simulation of sailing in all it's complexity. With virtual sailboats, online races and actual weather conditions. It entails the entire world.

This descriptions also applies to its predecessor Sailaway II, but in version III this is taken to a new level. More intense and better in every way. Sailaway III is created from scratch with the knowledge gathered with versions I and II. A bold move, that took many years of development and I can't tell you how proud I am.

Boat designer

Instead of default boats that are the same for everyone, Sailaway III comes with an advanced boat designer. Sailors can upload and create their 3D models and Sailaway will fill in the hard bits.

A boat has many moving parts and those moving parts may even have other moving parts attached to them. The new boat designer takes care of this and makes sure that everything behaves naturally and in accordance with the sail settings and the trim of the boat.

When you move over the deck, the contour of the boat has to be followed. This is usually done my collider meshes. The new boat designer can generate those collider meshes for you.

The sails of your boat need to be able to flap when the boat is in irons and they need to represent the actual shape of the sail as set by the trim lines and the bending of the mast. There is a sail designer present inside the boat designer that makes sure your sails will function like you would expect.

How the boat sails is computed automatically based on the shape of the hull and everything that is attached to it (sails, foils, etc). Sailaway does the math needed to predict the behaviour and speed of the boat. It incorporates the actual forces in the sails, the water drag, wind drag, the lift generated by the hull, the sails and the foils, rudder drag, etc. Every force that also operates on a real boat is taken into account and results in speed, heel, lift and maneouvrability.

The flow of air along the sails is computed and simulated in real-time. This will result in a force and that force is used for the calculation of boat speed, heel, etc.

There is no ideal setting, no hidden presets, nothing like that. If you want your boat to go fast, you need to trim the sails to give maximum power, while maintaining a laminar flow at an ideal angle. Just like in the real world. With one important difference: In sailaway you can make the air visible and actually see how it flows around your sails.

This creates a unique experience and a fantastic learning environment. You can experiment as much as you like with different line tensions, different deck layouts and even differently cut sails.

Visualized airflow in sails

Enhanced graphics

All shaders have been updated to the latest possibilities. The sea, the boats, the buildings and the land look much better on all hardware

When boat surfaces get wet by spray or rain, they will either be covered in droplets (smooth surfaces), become shiny (rough surfaces) or show dark speks (a teak deck).

Customizing boats with your own colors and textures is much easier.

The sky is consists of many layers of different clouds, like cirro-stratus, cirro-cumulus, alto-cumulus, etc. Each cloud layer sits at it's own altitude above the sea. The cumulus clouds are now 3D and respond to the light angle and light color coming from the sun.

Rain and snow look more realistic and there may be occasional lightning flashes/bangs as well.

World designer

It has become very easy to add or edit a sea mark like a buoy or light or the change the water depth in a port. Ports and coastal areas can be edited and decorated with many standard objects or with your own custom models. There is automatically generated vegetation that can be edited easily.

There is only one world, so all edits are applied to all sailors. The experience is that sailors are responsible people, but in case something does go wrong there are sailors with the authorization of "guardian" who are able to remove any unwanted edits.

New features

Tidal waterlevels are automatically applied everywhere you go. With a bit of help from the sailing community the tidal currents will be applied as well.

There is now a non-GPS mode in which the sailor has to rely on a magnetic compass and celestial navigation. The magnetic compass points to the magnetic north as measured on your boat (declination and deviation)

Food and water provisions are kept and reduced daily according to the temperature and weather conditions. Taking in a lot of food and water will the boat heavier and slow it down. Underwater growth is also gradually added on your journey and will have a negative effect on boat speed as well.

Boat speeds for offline sailing will be custom for your boat and your skills. To make your boat go fatser when you sail offline you need to "train" it (and yourself) by trying to sail as fast as possible.

You can customize the trimlayouts and fittings to your own liking. The sails will respond accordingly.

This is what our users say:

by Rrtyyutrtu – Aug 19, 2020 Very realistic boat docking simulation, as this is one of the most critical capabilities to develop as a sailboat skipper

by shazzgold – Aug 3, 2020 Captain on furlough. This gives me a chance to think about shiphandling again.

by JohnDoe9038592049 – Jun 8, 2020 I love the game! It does a really good job at simulating docking procedures and physics. Surprisingly it has actually helped me learn how to better dock an actual boat. It would be even better if you guys were able to add some different types of boats besides sail boats such as motor yachts. I feel like sail boats are a smaller fraction of what people own these days and motor yachts might be more helpful to some people. But overall, great game!

by Sipapi32123321 – May 21, 2020 Fun, challenging, awesome physics! Any chance a future update will add more boats like a larger motor yacht?

by Vysokovskiy – Feb 16, 2020 Thank you for a fantastic training app. The simulation is really well done. Looking forward to new scenes and sailing adjustment trainings.

by The Lake-Pirat – May 16, 2021 Best sail - and boat handling game ever!! I didn’t expect that much as I purchased it, now I’m fascinated 😃

Emil Muxoll5 - Jun 2021 😘😍🤩😅💘❤️🧡💛👍👍👍👍😍😘😭😜😝😝😛😋

Dj samuray26 - Apr 2021 I have seen very bad reviews and I have decided to try it and I do not see anything bad, it is more the game is very beautiful and good graphics it shows that there has been effort!!!

Awesome Ships4 - Aug 2021 Awesome physics and graphics! I hope you will add more functions. Waves and boat propeller washing looks awesome. Stay safe 🤠⚓!

Sailing Simulator - NED

NED is the world's best sailing simulator for teaching basic understanding of sail trim.

NED teaches you how to set the sails for every wind angle.

Before you play with NED, read this first.

The graphic below is representative of a real wind meter on a sailboat. You'll notice that the red triangle represents the relative position of the wind to the boat. On a real wind meter, the boat always faces up because you're always behind the meter. With NED, for simulation purposes and to give you a feel that the boat is turning when you activate the helm button, the boat turns with the helm but it immediately flicks back up to it's normal proper position. You'll notice the wind direction and the HDG (compass heading) have changed appropriately.

Hover over NED's components to gain a better understanding before you start poking and clicking. Then, you can turn off the tool tips button. Please enjoy our sailing simulator - NED.

Full instructions for NED are below .

NauticEd -- 21st Century Sailing Education

Have you taken NauticEd's FREE Online Sailing Course - basic sail trim?

INSTRUCTORS AND TEACHERS

How to use ned – the sailing simulator.

  • First - mouse over each of the elements of NED and you'll learn what they do.
  • NED is your virtual sailing instructor. NED will teach you how to correctly trim the sails on almost any sailboat with a mainsail and headsail.
  • Your sails will be correctly trimmed when your boat speed reaches its maximum for any particular wind speed and direction.
  • You can turn the boat into or away from the wind, let the sails out or tighten them up and you can adjust the speed of the wind.

NED represents the real world polar plot of a real racer cruiser sailboat. It’s the closest thing you can get to sailing instruction online.

Please play with NED. Once you've mastered NED – you'll be ready for real sail trim practice on the water.

NED is brought to you FREE by NauticEd – The World’s Most Advanced Online Sailing Education.

NED's Elements

The helm is controlled by the split button at the bottom center of NED.

Click the starboard split and the sailboat will turn to starboard. You'll notice the boat will straighten up once you have released the helm button. This is because on a real wind meter on a real boat the boat always stays pointing up and the meter tells you where the wind is in relation to your boat. Once the boat straightens up, you'll notice the wind angle and the heading will have changed according to how much you turned.

Hold the helm button down and the boat will turn 5 degrees every ½ second or so.

Sails are controlled by the winches which are located on port and starboard at the bottom of NED. The starboard winch controls the head sail. The port winch controls the mainsail.

NED gives you a number above each winch to represent the number of turns on the winch. The jib sheet is winched between 12 turns (all the way out) and 45 turns (all the way in). The main sail is winched between 5 turns (all the way out) and 35 turns (all the way in).

Wind Vector

The red triangular arrow located outside the wind dial represents where the wind is coming from. Click on the triangular arrow and you'll be able to adjust the speed of the wind. Initially, the wind starts at 60 degrees off your starboard bow.

The heading changes when you click or hold down the helm button. Initially you are heading north.

Efficiency Meter

The horizontal meter at the bottom of NED indicates to you how efficient your sails are trimmed.

If the meter is all the way to the left you have some trimming to do. If it's all the way to the right, your sails are perfectly trimmed and your boat speed should be maximized.

The closer your boat is trimmed to 30 degrees off the wind and the greater the wind speed, the greater will be the heel angle. This represents the real world and there is nothing you can do about it except reef your sails. NED may incorporate this feature in latter versions.

The changing depth meter merely simulates that you are moving. There is no control here. However in the real world you should always watch the depth.

Boat Docking Simulator App for iOS or Android

boat docking simulator dock your boat sfinx it

A boat docking simulator like Dock Your Boat by sfinx-it helps beginners or experienced sailors hone their skills in the harbor. including catamaran sailors!

Docking a sailboat is, for most “newbies”,  the most difficult maneuver to make. It is also where there are the most critical eyes watching you and sometimes worrying about their own boats sitting nearby and most of our buyers and students, always fret about docking a big catamaran.

They always seem to be intimidated by the high freeboard and wide beam.

But, by understanding the procedures and the theory behind the docking maneuvers you can quickly master the techniques to do a perfect docking.

If you can handle docking, you can handle any other maneuver situation.

The sfinx-it team are avid sailors themselves so they have a passion for helping other sailing enthusiasts learn safer, more confident docking.

Build Skills Year-Round with This Boat Docking Simulator

Practice and improve your boat docking skills even when you are not on board. With the Dock Your Boat app, you can use your iOS or Android device to experience realistic yacht handling moves. Check out the video to see how this skipper training app works. Make your mistakes virtually rather than at the dock where your investment and reputation are on the line.

Dock your Boat is an app-based game that simulates maneuvers under engine for sailing yachts with real physics action. This dry training is realistic guaranteeing real, experience-based learning. More Useful Notes On Docking A Catamaran

Catamaran docking

Docking a catamaran can and does go wrong. However, docking a catamaran with its twin propellers is a lot easier than a monohull because it has the unique ability to pivot on its center point and rotate in a complete 360° circle on its own keels without moving forward or aft.

While docking a catamaran, the rudders are centered and all the maneuvering is done with the two throttles only. There will be situations in which the wheel will be used, but because a catamaran’s twin propellers are so far apart, it is not all that necessary to use the rudders.

Don’t be discouraged or afraid to abort a docking and try again a second time or more if things don’t quite line up the way it should. Practice makes perfect when it comes to docking, so try docking a few times when the conditions are calm and where you have a bit of room.

This is FREE Catamaran Maneuvering game by NauticEd is an excellent way to understand the dual engine controls on a catamaran and to learn how to dock a catamaran with confidence.

Sailing Catamaran

  • View history

The Sailing Catamaran is a sailing boat which was added in Update 37 on May 10th, 2020. She was modelled by CaptainMarcin.

Information [ ]

A catamaran is a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size. The distance between a catamaran's hulls imparts resistance to rolling and overturning. Catamarans typically have less hull volume, smaller displacement, and shallower draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. The two hulls combined also often have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than comparable monohulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or motors. The catamaran's wider stance on the water can reduce both heeling and wave-induced motion, as compared with a monohull, and can give reduced wakes.

Exterior Description [ ]

The Sailing Catamaran has, as the name suggests, two blue hulls connected by a platform in the middle where the bridge is. The top of the hull is white and has a couple windows to look down from. Also, windows are on the sides. Infront of the bridge is a netted area connecting the hulls and the net is connected to the two, 52 feet sails which are white. Behind the bridge is the deck, which sports comfortable seating and a table is covered, though the wheel sits elevated on the starboard side.

The  Sunny Orange skin turns the hull a light orange.

Interior Description [ ]

Inside the Sailing Catamaran, there is another seating area with a table, along with some nondescript cupboards and a small sink and stove. The sides open down to a cramped corridor in each of the hulls. Both hulls have a bedroom near the amidships, with a bathroom containing a shower at the stern.

The Sailing Catamaran is a charter ship, making 55,700 Credits/Hour. Her best route is the "Ushuaia" charter from Ronne .

The Sailing Catamaran has one extra skin, the " Sunny Orange " skin.

The Sunny Orange Skin

  • This is the first catamaran added in the game and is an exact replica of the Balance 526 Catamaran
  • The Sailing catamaran has the same airhorn sound as the infamous "MLG airhorn."

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.
