Motor Yacht

Launched in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, Dubai is the world’s second largest private yacht, measuring 162 metres. Dubai’s incredible size is disguised by the elegant lines of her steel hull and aluminium superstructure – the work of renowned designer Andrew Winch. Her stunning interior was designed by Platinum Yachts.

The construction of this megayacht began for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei more than 10 years before the yacht’s launch. The construction, then a joint project between Blohm + Voss and Lurssen shipyards, was halted until 2001 when the hull was acquired by Platinum Yachts for His Highness Sheik Mohammed Rashid al-Maktoum. The project, previously named Platinum, Panhandle and Golden Star, was re-named Dubai.

Dubai’s luxurious interior design blends bold colours with fine fabrics and intricately detailed handmade mosaics. A spectacular staircase creates Dubai’s showpiece. Bathed in natural light from the top deck, this dramatic circular staircase features glass steps, which change colour. Dubai’s spacious decks offer a split-level owner’s deck; a large social area including the main lounge with its centrepiece red sofa; numerous VIP and guest suites, and a crew area to accommodate 115 people including crew and guest staff.

With seven decks, Dubai has a wealth of sunbathing areas; a striking mosaic swimming pool and several Jacuzzis. She can accommodate a helicopter of up to 9.5 tonnes and can carry two 10-metre long tenders.

Dubai has a displacement of 9,150 tonnes, yet can reach an impressive 26 knots at maximum speed. She has exceptional worldwide capability with a range of 8,500 miles at 25 knots, powered by four MTU diesel engines.

You will need to fill out a set of documents – basically that you are fit and waive any claim in case something goes wrong. There is a set of small lockers, but I would recommend to only bring the bare minimum. Note that you can keep your cell phone and glasses (hey, you want to see everything during your ride!). For the glasses, they attach an elastic security to ensure you don’ t loose them. Next, they guide you to a bus that drives you to the building where the fun will start. You are escorted to the elevator, where the driver smiles with compassion and presses the 42nd floor button. One more floor to go (with stairs) and you are 170m high and have a wonderful view on the marina, palm,… Some people in the group seemed a bit less convinced and had to motivate themselves to continue. All is very organized: they will first take a few pictures of each individual, next you get the safety gear installed, followed by a short interview (recorded on the GoPro) that is later on attached to your helmet. When it is your turn, you are secured, lay down on some ‘bed’ to attach you to the zip line, the bed is lowered and… it’s fly time. I rented a 55-foot Cruiser so that we could take in the breathtaking scenery. That was a fantastic opportunity to get a new perspective of Dubai, and I was blown away by the service. The seating on the yacht was really cozy. In addition, they knew all about the city’s history and famous sites . They are our absolute leaders. Any future visitors should absolutely stay there.

Perfect Accommodation The yacht has 2 cabins with 2 toilets on the decks that can accommodate up to 21 guests. A fully equipped kitchen is also available for visitors’ ease. Mesmerizing Sun Deck Passengers will find an outside dining area and a large sunbathing area on the sun deck. The 43-meter (141-foot) catamaran also has a wide space where water toys and diving equipment can be stored. The main tender can be stowed forward on the upper deck. Sky Lounge and other Amenities There's also a panoramic sky lounge on this deck, as well as a spacious cockpit with a swimming pool and plenty of dining and lounging facilities. The salon at 141 ft yacht is large, featuring a comfy sofa lounge and open plan access to the formal dining space. The sky lounge is accessible from this level. On the bridge deck level, there is a separate room with a huge sofa for relaxation, and a game table for socializing, resting, or movie night. An outside dining space with built-in seats is located further aft. The sun deck, which has a large Jacuzzi, and many chaise lounges, is a terrific location to unwind during the day or beneath the stars. The global megarich are paying up to $2 million a week for superyacht rentals but smaller boat charters are down

Sales of luxury yachts may be down but the world’s megarich have found another, more instantaneous way to get their high seas kicks — chartering a swanky boat instead.

Total chartered days for yachts longer than 50 meters has increased since 2020, according to  IYC , a global firm specializing in the sale and charters of luxury yachts. Vessels between 60 to 70 meters posted the most growth last year, at 10%, whereas shorter yachts aren’t nearly as popular as before.

IYC Chief Executive Officer  Raphael Sauleau  said he’s seeing more customers willing to pay a higher premium for the ultimate ocean experience. Clients are willing to pay more for a so-called advanced provisioning allowance, which covers on-board expenses like food and service, of up to 40% compared to the standard 30% of the total charter fee, he said.

New customers are coming to yachting “with an appetite for larger yachts,” Sauleau said. Compared with smaller vessels, these floating villas come with more privacy, better facilities and a larger crew. A bigger range of large models that’s become available over the past three years has also contributed to higher bookings, he added.

Fraser Yachts , a major international broker, is experiencing a similar phenomenon, receiving 7% more charter bookings for yachts over 60 meters in 2023 versus prior years. Across yachts of all sizes however, the number of charter days reported last year was 19% down on 2021.

It’s a quirk that would seem to chime with the trend of super luxury brands defying a broader luxury slowdown. Hermes International SCA, for example, saw Chinese buyers  snap up its products . Hermes typically caters to the most affluent customers, making it more resilient in a challenging luxury goods market.

At the same time, sales of floating palaces are waning, the Superyacht Times said in a  report  in March. Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.

Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal , the president of luxury travel and lifestyle consultancy Fischer Travel Enterprises, said she’s expecting to help clients charter at least 10 yachts this year. Most of the interest is around megayachts — or yachts above 60 meters — and prices range from about $700,000 to $2 million a week, she said.

Wealthy people may be shying away from outright purchases due to geopolitical worries and global conflicts.

Fear of more widespread fighting in the Middle East and Russian’s war in Ukraine “seem to make some buyers nervous, particularly those in the market for very large new builds,” the Superyacht Times said.
