How Much Does It Cost To Own a Boat or a Yacht in Singapore?

joannepoh

Cruising the seas on a yacht is the ultimate in luxury, as those folks with their very own super yachts berthed at Sentosa Cove’s marina would know.

Owning a boat is obviously not cheap the way a shopping spree at Daiso would be, but it does not have to cost millions either.

How much is a boat in Singapore?

Boats come in all shapes and sizes, and the prices can vary wildly. As with cars, a second hand boat costs significantly less than a brand new one.

Generally, prices cost from about $50,000 onwards for a second hand boat. On the other end of the scale, some of the biggest, fanciest yachts with spacious onboard living space can cost over a million bucks.

How much does it cost to berth your boat per month?

Wet berthing costs are generally in the $480 to $1,500 per month range, depending on location and the size of your boat. If you are getting a club membership in order to berth your boat, you might also receive other perks like use of the club’s gym.

Here are the available Marinas in Singapore:

  • Marina @ Keppel Bay
  • Marina Country Club
  • One Degree 15
  • Raffles Marina
  • Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
  • SAF Yacht Club Changi
  • SAF Yacht Club Sembawang
  • Changi Sailing Club

How to buy a boat in Singapore?

The easiest way is to approach a boat dealer. Dealers usually have a mixture of brand new and second hand boats for sale.

If you are not paying the full cost in cash, some boat dealers will offer their own loans if you are buying one of their boats. Alternatively, you can seek financing by taking out a personal loan .

Maintenance and repairs per month

Your maintenance costs will obviously depend on how frequently and intensively you use your boat. If you use your boat every weekend, you should budget at least $500 to $1,500 per month. This cost includes the cost of fuel and any repairs or replacements that must be made.

Other than mechanical checkups and maintenance, you should also take into account costs such as marina memberships fees, cleaning services and the price of getting your boating license if you do not already have one.

Insurance for a boat

Your boat insurance premiums will depend on factors such as boat model and size, as well as what your boat is being insured for. Most insurers will offer hull coverage, which protects the hull as well as the items attached to or kept and used on the boat, such as marine electronics.

Other features that might or might not be included are cleanup coverage in case of fuel spills, and removal of wrecks. You should also check the limits of the territory in which your boat is insured.

Be prepared to pay at least $1,200 a year for the most basic insurance plans.

How to get a boat licence in the first place?

In order to pilot a boat, you will need a Powered Pleasure Craft Driving Licence.

There are several organisations conducting courses (usually 2 or 3 days long) that will prepare you for the test, namely the following:

  • SAF Yacht Club
  • ONE15 Marina Club
  • Singapore Police Force Aquatic Club
  • Singapore Polytechnic
  • Singapore Powerboat Association
  • Water Venture Changi

To get your licence you will have to pass both a theory and practical test.

Set aside about $350 for the course fees, as well as about $190 for the tests and licence fee, assuming you pass on your first try.

Is a boat or yacht a liability or an investment in Singapore?

Like a car, a boat is a depreciating asset. You will be paying significant costs in order to operate and maintain it, and you are unlikely to be able to sell it at a much higher price than you got it for, unless you are undertaking major restoration or renovation works.

That being said, it is still possible to monetise your boat or yacht by renting it out. For instance, there is quite a bit of demand for weekend yacht parties in Singapore. This does take extra work though, as many yacht rental businesses provide not only a crew but also perks like champagne buckets.

How Much Does it (Really) Cost to Own a Yacht?

yacht maintenance cost singapore

The true cost to own a yacht is an area of concern for many prospects of yacht ownership. And it should be.

Maintenance costs, exploitation costs, total cost compared to yacht charter, we detail in this article the expenses (especially the hidden ones) you have to consider before buying your first yacht !

We also provide you several solutions to lighten your investment and reduce the cost to own your yacht.

If you are looking for the price of a yacht charter (rental), please read this article instead .

How much is a yacht?

Before diving into the expenses that comes monthly, yearly or every decades once you own a yacht, let’s answer the elephant in the room: How much is a yacht (alone) in the first place? The short answer is… it depends, of course. But in most cases, the longer the yacht, the higher is her selling price.

Generally speaking, you can expect to find yachts for sale in the following price ranges:

  • Below 50ft (15m): between 500K – 2,500,000 € / USD
  • Between 50-70ft (15-21m): between 2 millions and 6 millions € / USD ( See our 9 catamarans for sale under 6 millions here )
  • Between 70-100ft (20-30m): between 6 millions and 20 millions € / USD
  • Superyachts over 100ft (30m): minimum 10 millions € / USD

You can always find exceptions to the rule and find cheaper or more expensive yachts for sale outside of these price brackets.

A lot of factors come into the selling price of a yacht: supply and demand, brand / model reputation, age and condition of the vessel, urgency or lack of for the sale and so on.

What are the main hidden costs that come with yacht ownership?

You probably already guessed it, the cost of owning a yacht doesn’t stop at its purchase price . In some cases, the price you bought your yacht at can seem like a bargain, but it really isn’t once you start adding all the hidden costs, and many of them come yearly.

Here are the main ones you should be wary of.

yacht maintenance cost singapore

Yacht exploitation and running costs : always calculate them carefully before buying your yacht

It always cost you money to exploit your yacht.

When you are chartering a yacht, a part of these operation costs is included in your APA (Advanced Provisionning Allowance) .

When you own a yacht, these costs still apply , but you will have to pay directly for them.

Among the main operation costs, the most important are usually the following:

  • The fuel: its cost will depend on the type of boat, her fuel consumption, the region, and the distances traveled;
  • The mooring fees which depends on the area but also on the boat size;
  • The crew, if you need it. The cost will depend on the frequency and the crew’s size;
  • The communication fees;
  • The food and beverages supplies;
  • All the expenses related to your leisure activities.

Yachts maintenance: a cost that you should definitely not overlook

yacht maintenance cost singapore

Even outside of its operating period, it still costs you money to own your yacht!

Maintenance of your boat isn’t an option and must be done on an ongoing basis. The price vary depending on the type of yacht you are owning (motor, sail, etc…), the size of the vessel, but also how old she is.

The maintenance costs include :

  • The regular maintenance of certain equipment, like engines, thrusters, sails, rigging, safety equipment, hull(s) (fairing)…;
  • The occasional maintenance operations in case of breakdown or damage;
  • The painting;
  • The cleaning and the specialized maintenance products (for teak, leather, …).

The costs of maintenance and upkeep will obviously not be the same if you do it yourself or if you call in specialists. But regardless, you should have a budget buffer dedicated to maintenance costs when you plan on buying a yacht, especially if she already had a long sailing life.

The taxes and insurance premiums of a yacht: a cost that most forget

Consider the different taxes (at the purchase and annual) and the yearly yacht insurance that you have to pay. A specialized insurance policy is generally estimated at between 0.8% and 1.2% of the boat’s purchase price per year.

Yearly harbor fees : a very important hidden cost of yacht ownership

yacht maintenance cost singapore

The port and/or winterization fees are also a big part of yacht ownership costs that you should carefuly estimate.

Depending on your region, you may need to consider “dry-docking” your boat, which involves handling, transport, and storage which can be really expensive.

If you can leave your yacht in the water all year round, you will need to go for a harbor ring concession.

Depending on the marina and its infrastructure, the region, and your boat’s size, the costs may considerably vary from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars a month . However, it is easy to obtain this information from marinas once you have chosen which yacht to purchase.

The depreciation’s price of a yacht

A yacht, like a car, will depreciate . It is difficult to estimate the depreciation, as it depends on economic conditions, exchange rates, price inflation when new, the type of boat, and the shipyard.

However, it is reasonable to estimate a minimum depreciation of 10% in the first year, then 7% in the following years. From the fifth year on, the depreciation tends to slow down. On the other hand, the operating costs increase.

Summary of the main operating and maintenance costs of owning a yacht

So, to sum up, how much does it cost to own a yacht? It largely depends on your type of yacht and your location.

But in general, owning a yacht will cost you between 10-25% of its value annualy . The longer the yacht, the likelier you are to be at the end of the spectrum.

Here are the reasonable costs you could consider:

  • 10% of its value annually for a 60ft (18m) / 1 million USD yacht and below (=max 100K / year)
  • 20% of its value annually for a 100ft (30m) / 10 millions USD yacht and above (=min 2 millions / year)

These brackets of total costs include everything: usual yacht maintenance, upkeep and operating costs that will be distribued as follow:

  • Communication
  • Maintenance
  • Insurance premiums
  • Harbour fees
  • Cost of depreciation

Are you worried? Do not. Luckily, there are numerous ways to decrease the overall cost of yacht ownership and still enjoy yachting as it should be. Read the next paragraphs to know these valuable tricks.

How to reduce the cost of yacht ownership?

yacht maintenance cost singapore

A yacht keeps on costing money even when not in use, so the best way to make it a more profitable investment is to increase its exploitation.

Renting your own yacht : a good way to reduce the costs of owning a boat

When you are not using the boat, you can earn income by renting it out. The rental price depends on the type and size of the boat, but also its location. While making money from renting is possible, don’t expect to pay back all your expenses. Nevertheless, it will help you in avoiding your yacht becoming a financial burden.

The easiest way to do this is to hire a professional charter company to help you. If you go for a reputable and experienced company, you will benefit from their expertise and contacts. It will also save you from legal, insurance, and withdrawal issues and avoid red tape.

On the topic : Yacht to Charter : Can It Be Profitable?

Fractional yacht ownership: share the cost of owning a yacht with co-owners

Another solution to own a yacht at lower cost is fractional ownership of a boat , which means that you own a fraction of it. It can be half, a quarter, or even less. For a long time, boaters have been opting for this option of partial ownership with friends or family. These days some companies create formalized fractional ownership arrangements for more guarantees.

For example, in partnership with the Windward Islands, SAILING RESORT proposes fractional boat ownership on the fabulous trimaran, the LEEN 72’. So you can become a co-owner of the new hybrid-powered multihull which can accommodate up to 10 passengers and 4 crew members. You will enjoy private use of the trimaran (depending on the period) from 6 to 12 weeks during the first 5 years.

This program proposes a profitable commercial operation with 24/7 premium service. It is a tailor-made solution for all those who want to feel like owners of a prestigious yacht for a few days a year while limiting their investment and responsibilities. WI manages the operation of the yacht for you out of your personal use, like the charter’s organization, maintenance, insurance, annual mooring, and all other administrative tasks.

Once you have weighed the pros and cons and have the means to finance both the purchase and the annual costs (maintenance, operation, …) of your yacht, you should go for it! Indeed, if you can evaluate the hidden costs and expenses of owning a boat, the freedom and unforgettable memories are priceless.

Yacht Charter remains a cheaper alternative than yacht ownership in many cases

yacht maintenance cost singapore

If you can’t enjoy your yacht frequently or are still unsure about whether it’s worth the cost or not to own a yacht, you might consider chartering instead. This will allow you to try out different models , from various shipyards, and see which ones you prefer.

Therefore, the cost of renting a yacht will save you from having to worry about all those hidden costs of owning one. All you have to do is pay for your charter, your cancellation insurance and set your APA during your stay. This way, you only pay money, time, and effort when you use the boat.

Frequently asked question

For a 60-foot or million-dollar yacht, the cost per year will be about 10% of its value or $100,000 per year.

You should expect to pay about 20% or more of the original price of your boat to run it annually. So, for a $10 million yacht, the cost to operate will be about $2 million per year, including fuel, insurance, dock fees, maintenance and repairs, crew, etc.

A 180-foot superyacht and/or mega yacht costs a minimum of $4.75 million per year to operate and maintain. Kitty McGowan of the US Superyacht Association estimates an annual budget of $1 million for maintenance and repairs, $350,000 for dockage, $240,000 for insurance, $400,000 for fuel, and $1.4 million for the crew. Add another 15-25% of the vessel’s value for V.A.T.

Once you have weighed the pro and cons, if you can afford the purchase and all the hidden annual expenses, have found your dreamed yacht, and have time to enjoy it, you should go for yacht ownership!

It is not the best way to make money, but you can minimize your annual expenses by renting it or opting for fractional boat ownership.

It’s hard to tell. As long as you have the money and enough time to enjoy it, it is worth owning a yacht! Everything cannot be estimated. For example, it will bring you invaluable freedom and happiness.

One of the easiest way to reduce the maintenance cost of a yacht is to fractional yacht ownership. That way, the maintenance expenses are spread among co-owners according to their shares.

It varies greatly depending on the size of the yacht. For a yacht of 60ft (18m), you will likely spend around 10% of its purchase value each year in maintenance and exploitation costs.

Luxury yachts have maintenance and operation costs that are around 10% of their value yearly. So if a yacht value is 2 millions USD, its maintenance and operations costs should be around 200K / year.

Operating a sailboat is usually 20-40% cheaper than the same size motoryacht. Motoryachts tend to be more expensive to operate than sailboats as the fuel consumption can become an important expenditure fast.

A small yacht below 50ft is usually for sale between 500K and 2,5 millions USD / €. A mid-size yacht between 50ft and 100ft is usually for sale between 2-15 millions USD / €. Above 100ft, the selling price is rarely below 10 millions USD / €.

Owning a yacht is a dream for many, offering luxury, adventure, and the opportunity to create lasting memories.

However, understanding the real cost of owning a yacht is crucial for making an informed buying decision. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore yacht maintenance costs, yacht cost of ownership, hidden costs, and various aspects of owning a yacht, including storage, insurance, and fuel expenses.

Routine Maintenance

How to manage yacht crew costs, the cost of owning a yacht- easy to understand chart:.

Please note that these numbers are for illustrative purposes only and can vary significantly based on the yacht size, location, and other factors such as inflation.

Yacht Maintenance Cost: The Basics

When considering how much it costs to maintain a yacht, it’s important to understand that there are several factors involved. Yacht maintenance costs can vary depending on the size of the yacht, usage patterns, and the yacht’s age. Here’s a breakdown of the main cost categories:

Storage and Marina Costs

One of the primary costs of owning a yacht is storage. Marina fees vary based on location, amenities, and yacht size. For example, a 60-foot yacht might cost between $20-$22 per foot, plus additional utility fees in a typical marina. In a prestigious marina, the costs could be over $5,000 per month.

Insurance Costs

Insurance is another significant expense in the yacht’s cost of ownership. Rates for a 60-foot yacht can range from $6,000 to $14,000 per year, depending on factors like location and intended usage (private or charter).

Fuel expenses are a major part of yacht operating costs. Depending on fuel price fluctuations, a 60-foot yacht with a 1,200-gallon fuel tank can cost around $6,600 to fill up. Fuel consumption depends on yacht size, capacity, and usage patterns.

Routine maintenance is essential for keeping a yacht in optimal condition. For a 60-foot yacht with average usage, annual maintenance costs can be around $60,000, with regular preventive maintenance, including underwater cleaning, washing, and systems checks. Yacht management companies can help streamline maintenance and prevent costly repairs.

Yacht Crew Costs

One significant aspect of yacht ownership not covered in the previous sections is the cost of employing a yacht crew. Depending on the size and complexity of your yacht, a crew may be necessary to ensure smooth operation and an enjoyable experience for everyone on board.

Yacht Crew Expenses

The annual cost of hiring a yacht crew varies based on the number of crew members needed, their experience, and the duration of their employment. Here’s a general breakdown of the annual costs associated with employing a yacht crew:

  • Crew Salaries : Salaries depend on the crew members’ positions and experience. For example, a captain’s salary can range from $70,000 to $150,000 annually, while a deckhand might earn between $30,000 and $60,000 annually. Remember that these are just average figures , and actual salaries may differ based on various factors.
  • Crew Training and Certifications : Professional yacht crew members often need specific training and certifications to work on a yacht. The cost of these programs varies, but yacht owners should be prepared to cover these expenses or offer financial assistance for crew members to obtain the necessary qualifications.
  • Crew Insurance : Yacht owners are responsible for providing insurance coverage for their crew members. Depending on the contract terms, this includes health insurance, liability insurance, and potentially even life insurance.
  • Crew Travel and Accommodation : Yacht owners may need to cover travel and accommodation expenses for their crew members, particularly if the yacht is traveling to various locations or if crew members need to join the yacht at a specific destination.
  • Crew Uniforms and Gear : Professional yacht crews typically wear uniforms, and the yacht owner is responsible for providing them. Additionally, the owner should also cover any necessary gear or equipment for the crew’s job responsibilities.

While employing a yacht crew can be expensive, there are ways to manage these costs effectively:

  • Hire a Yacht Crew Management Company : These companies can help yacht owners find, hire, and manage their crew, ensuring a smooth operation and a great experience for everyone involved. This can help you save time and effort while making sure your crew is well-taken care of.
  • Seasonal Crew Members : If your yacht usage is seasonal, consider hiring crew members on a seasonal basis to save on costs. This way, you only pay for the crew when you need them.
  • Fractional Yacht Ownership : As mentioned earlier, fractional yacht ownership allows multiple owners to share the cost of owning and operating a yacht. This also applies to crew costs, which can be divided among the co-owners, significantly reducing individual expenses.

Cost of Owning a Small Yacht: A Closer Look

If you’re considering a smaller yacht, it’s essential to understand the true cost of owning a small yacht. Generally, smaller yachts have lower maintenance costs, but there are still several annual expenses to consider:

Storage and Marina Fees

As with larger yachts, storage fees for smaller yachts vary depending on location and amenities. Expect to pay between $10 and $15 per foot in a typical marina for a 30-foot yacht.

Insurance rates for smaller yachts are usually more affordable, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 per year, depending on factors such as location and usage.

Smaller yachts have lower fuel consumption, resulting in lower fuel costs. However, it’s still essential for most yachts to budget for fuel expenses, as they can add up over time.

The annual operating cost of maintaining a small yacht is lower than that of a larger yacht. Annual maintenance costs can range from $20,000 to $30,000, including regular cleaning, engine servicing, and systems checks.

Yacht Management Fees: Is It Worth It?

Hiring a yacht management company can be an excellent investment for yacht owners. Yacht management fees typically cover maintenance, crew management, and charter bookings. Fees vary depending on the size of the yacht and the services provided, ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 per year.

Yacht management companies can help you save time, reduce stress, and streamline the ownership experience for boat owners. They also help prevent costly repairs by ensuring your yacht receives regular maintenance and proper care.

Key Takeaways: Understanding the Costs of Yacht Ownership

In summary, owning a yacht is a significant financial commitment with various expenses, including maintenance, storage, insurance, and fuel costs. Here are the key takeaways from this comprehensive guide, including the dollar amounts associated with yacht maintenance:

Yachts are often thought of as commodities for the rich, with yacht parties commonly portrayed by the media as upper-class luxuries.

Complete the picture with some gourmet hors d’oeuvres and you’ve got the image of an upper-crust rich person party.

But things are different these days. With yacht rentals in Singapore becoming more affordable, you can actually live out the fantasy of a yacht party in the same price range it takes for you to stay a night in a hotel room .

Yacht rental in Singapore: Should you rent a yacht for your event?

A yacht rental in Singapore is a refreshing change from having your events inside hotel rooms, chalets, or even in event halls. Instead of being stuck indoors, you get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Feel free to go outdoors, take in the sea breeze, and enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of the city. And when you’re done suntanning, you can pop back in to relax.

Moreover, if you’re having an office function on a yacht, you can do away with the uncomfortable formal wear, and dress down in shorts and slippers.

There isn’t any limitation to the kinds of events that you can have onboard a yacht. In general, here are the most common events that people charter yachts for:

  • Weddings and solemnisation
  • Corporate retreats
  • Parties and gatherings with family and/or friends

What’s more, you can stay overnight onboard a yacht too! If you’re sick of having staycations inside hotel rooms, why not take it to a whole new level by having it onboard a yacht!

Not sure what you can do when you’re staying overnight on a yacht? Find out more about it in our guide to yacht staycations here!

Do take note, though, that depending on the type, capacity, and amenities onboard, some yachts are more suitable for certain events.

What can you do onboard a yacht?

Plenty! Every yacht comes equipped with an icebox and fridge so you’ll have cold drinks at the ready.

Most of the boats will also have a sound system for your favourite tunes, and others come equipped with an indoor karaoke setup. So feel free to make full use of the yacht rental duration and sing as much and as loud as you can!

If you’re looking to relax and enjoy the sea breeze, you can always lounge on the sundeck and work your tan.

Once the yacht docks, you can take the fun into the sea – most yachts come equipped with water toys, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks. Some models also come equipped with jet-skis which you can have as an add-on rental.

In addition, you can opt to dive into the sea and hone your swimming skills. If you aren’t keen on getting wet, you can explore the Lazarus and St John’s Islands. Outside of renting a ferry to sail to these islands, it’s not every day that you get to visit these pristine, empty beaches.

Feel free to bring your own food and drinks onboard too! You may also bring your own booze (except red wine), since we don’t charge any corkage fee.

But if you find that it’s a hassle to bring your own food, you may opt for the BBQ add-on. Do take note that due to insurance conditions, only the crew will be allowed to do the cooking onboard.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht? Check out this guide.

What’s on the sailing itinerary?

The usual itinerary with the minimum rental duration of 4 hours goes something like this:

Arrive 15 minutes before the charter time

Be sure to come earlier to meet the crew. They’ll then usher you to the yacht.

Not all yachts are located in the same place. So depending on the boat you’re renting, you’ll meet the crew at either ONE°15 Marina Club or Marina at Keppel Bay.

If you’d like some time to decorate the yacht before your event, you can do so too! We usually allocate up to half an hour for this. If you need more time, you’ll need to book the yacht for a longer period.

Safety briefing

Once you and your guests are settled comfortably onboard the yacht, the captain and crew will brief you on the do’s and don’ts.

Begin sailing towards the Southern Islands

You’ll then cruise from the Marina towards the Southern Islands. Along the way, you’ll pass by smaller islands such as Kusu, St John’s, and Sisters’ Islands. This whole journey will take around 20 to 25 minutes.

Anchor at Lazarus Island

After the crew has lowered the anchor at Lazarus Island, feel free to jump into the waters for a swim!

At the same time, the crew will help you set up the water toys.

If you’ve booked for the BBQ add-on with us, the crew will also start preparing them. So sit back and relax (or have some fun with the water activities) while the crew cooks the food for you.

The yacht will be stationed there for around 3 hours.

Sail back to the main island

If you’ve added the City Skyline Cruise as an add-on, we’ll first cruise to the Marina Bay Sands area to enjoy the view, before returning to the Marina.

Do take note that this is the recommended itinerary. If you’d like to plan your own itinerary, feel free to discuss it with your captain. However, given the restrictions in Singapore, the destinations that we can travel to will be of a similar nature.

Yacht rental in Singapore: Types of yachts you can rent

Depending on your event, the type of yacht to rent will vary. It’s good to have a little understanding of the types of yachts available, so you can make a better decision when booking for one.

Each yacht has its own set of features, and some will suit your needs more than others. Certain yachts can accommodate more people on board, making them great for larger gatherings like parties and corporate events.

Others are more trimmed down and sleeker in profile, which makes them ideal for more intimate events and long-distance cruising.

On Yachtly, you can rent either a monohull (single-hull) or a catamaran (twin-hull) yacht.

yacht maintenance cost singapore

A catamaran yacht consists of 2 hulls that are parallel to each other and joined by a frame. In general, it can either be sail- or engine-powered.

A catamaran also has 2 engines, with one in each hull. The good thing about this twin-engine configuration is that it makes it easier to navigate in the sea and dock. In addition, this allows most modern catamarans to do 360 degree turns within their own length.

Very stable

Catamarans are much more stable than monohulls. Owing to the twin-hull design, they don’t rock and roll in the same way that monohulls do. This is a big plus if you’re bringing along younger children and elderly people onboard, since they may not be as steady on their feet.

Since a catamaran is less susceptible to the effects of the wave actions, it’s easier for you and your guests to walk around the deck and the interior of the yacht while it’s moving. If you’re prone to seasickness, you’ll feel less of the motion compared to a monohull too.

Our power catamaran - Leopard 51 - can easily accommodate 33 guests

Very spacious

Given the twin-hull layout, catamarans generally provide far more living space compared to monohulls of similar sizes. The space in catamarans is also maximised for the entire length of the boat, making them roomier than monohulls.

Their cabins are often more spacious, and the galley, main salon, and dining areas are usually above the water level.

Plus, some sailing catamarans come with fabric nets that stretch across the hulls and frames. These nets are useful especially if you and your guests love to lounge on the deck and enjoy the sea breeze.

If you’re planning to invite a large group for your yacht party, you might want to consider renting a catamaran. It’s a more suitable yacht for a wedding too!

Check out our guide on yacht weddings here. We’ve included our recommended boats for the momentous event too!

Downside to catamarans

One bad thing about catamarans is that as compared to monohulls, the person steering it will get less feedback from the wheel. This means that the person behind the wheel will need to be extra vigilant when sailing in rough seas.

But if you’re renting with Yachtly, you don’t have to worry about this since the yacht charter comes with the captain and crew who will be steering the boat.

For more information about catamaran yachts, be sure to check out our guide here!

Monohull yachts, as their name implies, are yachts with a single hull. Most boats come in this design, and are usually equipped with a keel below the waterline to counterbalance the turning force of the wind on the vessel.

Like catamarans, they can also be sail- or engine-powered.

Easy to manoeuver

What gives monohulls an edge over catamarans is that they’re highly manoeuvrable, as the single-hull design allows them to tack quickly . In addition, these yachts cut through the water effortlessly, leading to a smooth and tranquil sailing experience.

yacht maintenance cost singapore

Great for thrill-seekers

If you’re having a group of thrill-seekers onboard, you might want to consider renting a monohull. The good thing about monohulls is that they’re perfect for those who enjoy a more adventurous sailing experience, especially when they heel.

Downside to monohulls

Do take note, though, that given the single-hull configuration, monohulls are less stable and steady as compared to catamarans. This also makes them more likely to capsize when sailing in rough seas.

Sailing yachts

As the name suggests, sailing yachts mainly use sails to propel them. They also come equipped with motors, for when there’s no wind to propel them forward.

Cheaper to operate

Since they mainly rely on the wind, and use less motor and fuel, they’re cheaper to operate. This also reduces the cost of maintaining them.

Additionally, they make for a quiet sail as they don’t rely much on the motor. If you prefer a quiet and peaceful sail, a sailing yacht rental might just be the one for you.

Downside to sailing yachts

However, one downside to sailing yachts is that they’re more difficult to sail. Some sailing skills and expertise are needed to navigate them through the waters.

Plus, the person sailing it would also need to understand how the wind and tides can affect the sailing, as well as how to adjust the sails.

But you don’t have to worry about this when you’re renting with Yachtly, since the charter comes with the crew who will handle these.

Motor yachts

Motor yachts, on the other hand, are powered by engines and rely on either diesel or gasoline.

Travel faster

Speed is probably the best thing about motor yachts.

Owing to their engines, they can travel faster than sailing yachts. While sailing yachts can sail to a maximum of 7 knots, motor yachts can go as fast as 15 to 20 knots.

So if you’re only renting for the minimum duration of 4 hours and plan to hop to a few islands, you should consider a motor yacht rental.

Easier to dock in shallow waters

Motor yachts also don’t sit too deep in the water, making them easier to dock in shallow waters. This also means that you can get closer to the beaches easily.

Downside to motor yachts

One bad thing about motor yachts is that their engines can be expensive to maintain. When they break down, repairing them can be costly.

But the good thing about a yacht rental is that you get to enjoy sailing, without having to worry about dealing with the expensive maintenance.

Here’s a table to summarise the different pros and cons of each type of yacht:

If you’d like to read up more about the different types of yachts, head down to our guide here.

Top 10 things to note when renting a yacht in Singapore with Yachtly

As with most things in life, renting a yacht doesn’t come without its own set of guidelines and rules. Each yacht will have its own set of rules that you and your guests should follow.

The one rule that’s common across all yachts is: Always listen to the captain, and don’t commit any rash or irresponsible acts.

1. Are there any hidden costs? No. The price includes the cost of fuel, amenities, captain, and crew. Any add-ons are just things like the BBQ and City Skyline Cruise, in which the prices will be listed when you make the booking. 2. What happens if I need to cancel my booking? Each yacht has its own cancellation policy. You can view our cancellation policies here .

3. What happens if I need to change my booking after confirmation? Get in touch with us and we’ll help you out.

4. How do I know if my booking is confirmed? You’ll receive a confirmation email with your booking reference, and all details pertaining to the charter.

5. What is the difference between “Instant booking” and “Request to book”? The difference between the two is whether you’re guaranteed a yacht at the date and time you’ve chosen.

6. Can I cook onboard the yacht? No – due to insurance policies, all cooking can only be done by the yacht’s crew.

7. Can I bring my own food and drink?

Yes, of course! Please bring your food into the Marinas yourself, since external vendors aren’t allowed to enter.

We don’t charge corkage fees either and we encourage responsible drinking. Do keep in mind that red wine is not allowed onboard, since it can stain the decks of the yachts.

8. Do I have to bring my own cutlery? If you’re bringing your own food and drink, you’ll have to bring your own cutlery. If you’ve ordered food through us, we’ll provide them. Please also bring disposable plastic cups, since the yacht may run out of supplies.

9. Do I need to bring anything else for the charter? We recommend that you bring a spare change of clothes and towels, since a lot of the activities onboard will involve water.

10. What are your terms and conditions? For all the legal details, check our page here.

Other FAQ’s

Is there mobile phone coverage on the yacht? Yes; you should have mobile coverage for the entire duration of your itinerary. The signal at Lazarus Island can be intermittent, but it’s generally workable.

Can I have different amenities than the ones listed on the yacht’s page? Unfortunately, no – these amenities aren’t transferable between yachts.

Can I bring my pets onboard? Sadly, no – pets are not allowed on board the yachts.

Can I sail non-stop? No. The yacht rental fee includes fuel only for the itinerary. The yacht also has to anchor in order to prepare water toys and any food you ordered.

Can I stay overnight on the yacht?  You can! Please drop us an email at [email protected] to find out more.

What if the weather is bad? Singapore’s tropical climate means that sometimes, thunderstorms and passing showers occur.

If rain happens, the charter will proceed since there is no impending danger to property or any lives. If the rain develops into a thunderstorm, we’ll delay the charter for up to an hour.

If the weather doesn’t clear up, we’ll reschedule your charter to a mutually agreeable date and time. We recommend contacting your captain to get an onsite assessment of the weather.

Can I ask for more water toys? At the moment, you can only request for additional water toys if the yacht has them. We’re working on making more water toys available in the future.

What’s included when I have the BBQ service add-on? The yacht’s BBQ service is a nominal fee for the crew to set up the pit, cook and serve the food, as well as cleaning it up after.

What kind of food do you provide? While we don’t prepare food in-house, we’ve partnered with reputable catering companies who are Halal-certified such as Neo Group.

We offer a BBQ package which includes cooked food and raw marinated BBQ food. The cooked food will be prepared by the catering company and sent to the yacht in takeaway containers.

As for the BBQ food, the ingredients will be sent to the yacht and cooked onboard.

What about safety onboard the yacht? Prior to setting sail, the captain will give a safety briefing. It is important to listen to this to prevent any accidents. In the unforeseen event that one does occur, you should inform the captain immediately.

What kinds of safety equipment does the yacht come with? All safety equipment onboard each yacht is regulated by the Maritime Authority of Singapore. They include but are not limited to: life vests, communication, and navigational equipment, among others.

Are children and pregnant women allowed onboard?

Yes! For pregnant women, it’s best that you are in good health so that you can enjoy the trip.

For children, there are no age limits. Do let us know how many children there will be so we can prepare the appropriate number of life vests for them.

Is smoking allowed onboard?

Rules regarding smoking are different for each yacht. As a general guideline, smoking is only allowed in the rear of the yacht after it anchors. The captain will cover the do’s and don’ts in their safety briefing.

Boat Maintenance Costs: How to Avoid Any Surprises

Like cars and houses, boats need maintenance, but unlike the other two, they need more of it due to exposure, salt water corrosion, and stresses that come with being a seriously mobile platform. The total cost of boat ownership should include maintenance which can be divided into categories like frequent (monthly), periodic (semi-annually or seasonally) annual, and long(er) term. For example, washing a boat should be done twice a month while the bottom paint may be refreshed every 2-3 years.

Maintenance costs vary with the size of the boat and the complexity of additional equipment such as a generator, water maker, large battery banks, extra refrigerators, sail repair, etc. Usually, maintenance can be estimated as a percentage of the boat price (4-10% of the purchase price for a new boat) but that will vary with how big and complex the boat is, whether it’s owned privately or placed with a charter company like Navigare Yachting, and where it’s kept which will dictate not only the effect of the climate but also the cost of local labor.

If you live aboard the boat, your maintenance costs will be different since the boat is used less as a vessel and more as a home and that stresses different systems. For example, the sails and engine may not be used frequently but onboard systems like the plumbing and refrigeration may need routine upkeep. Upgrades and major repairs are beyond the scope of this discussion and for our purposes, we’ll focus on a 40-50-foot sailing yacht ( monohull or catamaran ).

Frequent and periodic maintenance

Washing – a boat gets dirty and it collects corrosive salt which is why it’s good to wash a boat at least every other week and after every outing. If you do this yourself, you’ll save money, but you must factor in cleaning supplies which can cost at least $100 per year. Professional cleaning quotes will be by size and can vary dramatically from $10-20 per foot per month and more for catamarans that have two hulls and more deck surface.

Waxing – most boats are finished with a gel coat which must be waxed both for protection and to look its shiny best. The best results require buffing with an abrasive chemical polisher and then applying wax. The deck, cabin top, and hull will need to be waxed and this is usually priced per foot and will be more for a catamaran. Waxing should be done every 6-12 months depending on the severity of sun exposure and may cost $1,000-$1,500 each time.

Bottom cleaning – boat hulls that are kept in water attract growth both soft (grasses) and hard (creatures). Growth not only adds weight, but it also adds friction which makes the boat slower and more fuel-hungry. The regularity and necessity of bottom cleaning depend on where the boat is kept, what marine life is present in the water, and even the temperature of the water. Most regular bottom cleaning is done every month and can cost $1-2 per foot of hull.

100-hour service – boat engines need to be serviced and a typical period is 100 hours of use which will come at different times for different boats but can be 1-2 times per year. The oil must be changed, filters (fuel and oil) replaced, belts inspected, and pump impellers replaced if needed. This service is usually charged per hour and will depend on local labor costs.

6-short haul.png

Seasonal or annual maintenance

Detailing – this comprehensive service is usually done annually and it includes washing, polishing, and waxing of the hull and superstructure. It may also include a deep cleaning of cockpit cushions and fabric structures like dodgers or isinglass enclosures and mitigation of mold and mildew. Rust should be polished off all stainless and the brightwork or varnish on the wooden surfaces may be included. An interior deep cleaning may or may not be included. Pricing will depend on what’s included and the size of the boat. You can expect to pay $30-50 per foot and more for cats.

Winterizing and spring commissioning – if your boat is kept in a cold climate, it may need to be winterized at the end of the season and recommissioned again after a layup. Both processes may include deep cleaning and waxing and equipment care. The process is much like a 100-hour service but also includes flushing of the engine cooling system and inspecting items such as the raw water strainer, the shaft and shaft seal/packing gland, exhaust manifolds, electrical system, generator (which is another engine), transmission fluid and so forth. Don’t forget ancillary equipment like water makers and even the windlass. Again, this service is usually priced hourly and the more engines, the more cost.

Battery inspection and maintenance – today’s boat batteries are often of the sealed kind rather than traditional wet cells which require topping up with fluid. However, even if you have sealed AGM or lithium batteries, it’s good to check them at least once a year to inspect their charge times and discharge capacities to determine how much service life they have left. Replacing batteries may not happen but once every few years on private vessels or more than once a year for boats in the charter that get heavy use.

Long-term maintenance and inspections

Sails and rigging – sailboats will need to have their sails inspected and possibly mended or washed. Dacron cruising sails can last years with normal use while hardworking laminated racing sails are not only more fragile but also more expensive to replace. The running rigging (the lines that manage the sails) is subject to UV damage, flogging, and strain/stretch and may need to be whipped, over-ended, or replaced. Standing rigging, which are the stays and shrouds that support the mast, should be tuned and inspected. Most boat owners will use a professional rigger for this inspection. If the boat is sailed hard and often, this inspection can be annual although, for most boats, it may be sufficient to do it every few years. Riggers are specialized tradesmen and you can expect to pay more than $1,000 for a comprehensive rig inspection and tuning.

Antifouling paint – boats that live in the water need protective ablative or hard antifouling or “bottom” paint. These two types of paints wear differently and are suited to different uses and environments. This service is done in a boatyard and includes power washing (or in extreme cases stripping) the existing paint and reapplying new paint. Osmotic blistering treatment will be an extra charge. Expect to pay upwards of $100 per linear foot of hull depending on the yard and the quality of the paint chosen – and double that in the case of catamarans. The boat will need to be hauled out of the water by the boatyard for this work to be done. Expect $10-20 afoot for the haul-out fee. It’s a good idea to inspect the propeller(s) and grease the folding and feathering kind while the boat is hauled out. This service is additional to bottom painting and is done on an hourly basis.

Miscellaneous maintenance

Your tender and outboard should be included in any maintenance schedule and budget. A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) should be inspected for leaks and the outboard should be serviced including coolant, lower unit lubrication, and the fuel injection system and spark plugs. The windlass, anchor, and chain/rode should also be inspected annually. Flares, lifejackets, and fire extinguishers should also be checked (not maintained) and should be replaced when at their expiration dates. This will add to what most people consider to be part of the maintenance budget.

The importance of maintenance

DIY maintenance is an option, but you must have the skills and the time to do it. Professional services may cost you 3-10 times more than doing it yourself but for some tasks like applying bottom paint or repairing sails, it’s best to leave it to professionals. Pick what you want to tackle (like cleaning or detailing) and leave the rest for others.

How you tackle boat maintenance is up to you but it’s an unavoidable part of boat ownership and you do need to budget for it. Make checklists of what has to be done and don’t underestimate the associated costs. If you don’t take on certain projects for a while, they’ll turn into deferred maintenance issues which can be much more costly later.

If your boat is in the charter as with Navigare Yachting, the maintenance process will be done for you automatically but you should understand the need for it and its costs so you can factor that into your annual budget and avoid surprises at the end of the year, provided that you have chosen the program where you bear the maintenance costs. In our Complete Program , on the other hand, Navigare Yachting will cover the cost of all maintenance!

How to buy a yacht in Singapore: Cost, size and other factors to consider before sinking your money in

yacht maintenance cost singapore

Riva 50M

The demand for big boys toys is on the rise, and it’ll only continue to grow. Here’s what you ought to think about before joining the party

It doesn’t take much to notice that the demand for yachts has been steadily increasing in Asia in the past few years. Yacht shows – such as the Singapore Yacht Show and Thailand Yacht Show – have reportedly pushed for a fair number of sales. In particular, the number of superyachts (over 79 feet / 24m in length) in Thailand increased by over 50 per cent in the last three years.

According to the 2019 Global Order Book , 78 per cent of yachts being built are motor yachts, with one in four measuring 78 to 88 feet (23 to 26m). But new builds only represent a small portion of yachts available to buyers. There are almost 800 superyachts advertised for sale online, and the majority of these are pre-owned.

Which yacht builder should I go to?

The first – and most important question – is who to buy your yacht with. If you’ve already seen a yacht you like, that solves a lot of issues. But if you need help finding the right yacht, that’s where you need a broker to step in. There are numerous brokers and dealers in Singapore, such as Simpson Marine , Hong Seh Marine and Boat Lagoon Yachting Singapore.

To build or to buy?

Many first-time owners prefer purchasing pre-owned yachts and refurbishing it, as it gives them an opportunity to really understand the workings of the vessel. Price wise, expect an upwards of USD9 million (S$12 million).

Driftwood yacht

Uncovering the (not so) hidden costs

You’ll also have to take into account the upkeep, which includes everything from insurance, fuel, docking fees to crew salaries, maintenance and repair bills and more. A conservative figure to keep in mind would be shelling out 10 per cent of the yacht’s value towards its upkeep every year.

Pleasure pursuits

It’s also important to ask yourself what the main objective of your purchase. Is it for business, where the intention is to charter? Or is it for personal use. If it’s the latter, how open are you to renting it out when it’s not in use? On average, owners are on board just six weeks a year, and chartering the yacht allows them to maximise their purchase.

The charter market is fairly competitive, and this means you’ll need to be very selective about the yacht you’re purchasing. The most popular charter yachts offer equally sized ensuite cabins, plenty of space to entertain, are run by an exceptional crew. They also tend to have the latest amenities like tenders, jet skis, a gym, whirlpool tub and at times, a spa.

You also need to identify your clientele and market share. It’s easy to find a yacht that can accommodate eight people, but when you start looking at 10 or more overnight guests, the number of potential yachts will drop. Ask yourself if that’s a space you’d like to be in. It’s important to be aware that if you want the yacht to accommodate more than 12 guests, the classification rules change and it becomes more complex.

Building: bespoke, classic production or semi-production

For those who have their hearts set on building yacht, you can either go for a bespoke build or a production piece (mass built by the brand).

And here’s where things get slightly trickier. There are roughly 150 new yachts hitting the water every year, but only a few of these are custom builds . If you’re looking for a yacht under 100 feet (30m), consider a production yacht. Price aside, it will be delivered to you much sooner, given that there are less bespoke options on a yacht for you to consider.

If you go with a production yacht, choose between a classic or semi-production yacht, the latter which is essentially a more customised option. Semi-production superyachts sit on a production hull while allowing you to make a number of personal touches, offering the best of both worlds in terms of cost and personalisation.

But if you truly desire a custom-built superyacht, you can take a look at some concepts that have been backed by superyacht yards , or commission a team to craft a yacht that is tailored to your specifications .

Riva 50M

Play the waiting game

Commissioning a new build is a complex process that spans years. Expect to wait upwards of three years depending on the size. According to a representative from Benetti Yachts , it takes roughly four years from the time someone toys with the idea of buying a yacht to actually making the purchase.

Choice of marina

Singapore is an obvious choice in the Southeast Asian region, given its lack of severe weather conditions and stable economy, explains Scott Walker, director of Asia Pacific Superyachts Singapore.

The city’s robust banking system is also preferred by the wealthy, which makes it simpler to send or receive money if you’re transferring the purchase price or dealing with charter fees. Plus, Singapore has shipyards and service providers in abundance. Adding to the appeal is the fact that foreign registered yachts can also be exempted from GST on purchases if they go through the proper channels, Walker says.

It’s location as a hub for the region is another reason to keep yachts in Singapore, as it’s within sailing distance to Pulau Tioman in Malaysia and the Anambas Islands in Indonesia.

Size matters

Of course, the marina you select also depends on the size of your yacht. The bigger the yacht, the more challenging it’ll be to find space for her in the region. The most common size for a superyacht is between 78 and 100 feet (24 and 30.5 metres), but that’s on a modest side of the scale. For context, Azzam , the largest yacht in the world measures six times that, at 590 feet (180m). And not many marinas are able to accommodate yachts of that size.

If you decide to keep your yacht in Singapore, you’ll need to ensure the size is under 200 feet (61m), because that’s the maximum size that can be accommodated ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, our city’s most prestigious marina.

With 90 per cent of yachts staying at the marina on a long-term basis, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is a realistic option for a homeport. But space is competitive: the marina receives more than double the number of enquiries than they have berths each year, reveals Esther Ang, marketing manager of the marina.

In fact, demand is so high that the marina is undergoing renovation. By the end of 2020, it’ll be able to accommodate 19 superyachts, up from its original 12. Yet another reason to berth at ONE°15 is its CIQP facilities, which allows the boats to clear in and out of Singapore at the marina, instead of the Immigration Anchorage.

If you’re thinking of buying a yacht closer to 100 feet (30.5m), your berthing options increase – but the three other marinas in Singapore with space for yachts of this size. When Raffles Marina opens its CIQP facility in October, it may become a more attractive alternative to ONE°15.

San Lorenzo 64Steel

How far can it go?

To understand just how long-range your yacht needs to be, you have to know where you’d like to take her. If you plan to cruise the coasts of Malaysia, Thailand and beyond, range is less of a concern because there are a handful of facilities that you can access, such as Royal Selangor Yacht Club, Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and Royal Phuket Marina.

But if you’d like to go somewhere more remote on a regular basis, you’ll need a yacht with a higher range. Take for example Indonesia, where the nearest marina is in Bali, and can accommodate yachts up to 98 feet (30m) in length. In this instance, you should aim for a range above 2,500 nautical miles. Feadship’s Najiba has a range of 6,000 nautical miles , for example, although that is exceptionally far.

For those who’re especially keen on exploring the numerous archipelagos that scatter the region, it’s best to opt for a yacht of a smaller size, which relates to a smaller draft, and ease for exploration. Or maybe consider purchasing a chase boat while you’re at it.

Lastly…

Don’t forget to hire a lawyer right from the start of the process. Buying a yacht is more like purchasing a jet or floating real estate, compared to a car and should be treated with as much scrutiny. We’ll leave you with a tip: Never skip the sea trial or full condition survey, and don’t skimp on doing the due diligence.

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

To learn more about each crew position in detail, including salary ranges, please visit our yacht department directory .

Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.

This sunburst diagram is interactive. You can click into each block to see the expense break down and mouse over each block for more details.

Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

How Much Does it Cost to Buy a Yacht in Singapore?

How much does it cost to buy a yacht in Singapore? Well, expect to pay more than the cost of the yacht itself. There are also other expenses that you should take into consideration. This article will discuss just that.

Introduction

Living on a yacht in the marinas of Singapore and sailing beyond them may be one of the things you’re looking most forward to. You may have already tried renting a yacht and experienced first-hand what it feels like to have one. And, with the experience that traveling by sea gives, you might just want to keep coming back for more.

Over time, the cost of renting a yacht can add up. It also gives you less freedom to sail whenever and wherever you desire. Because of this, you just may be wondering how to buy a yacht for yourself. Read more to find out how you can start this exciting journey ahead and how much it will cost you.

On average, a new yacht costs $1,219,884 SGD ($887,453.05 USD), while a second-hand yacht costs $683,783 SGD ($497,445.09 USD). However, there are listings that can go as low as $45,773.84 SGD ($33,300 USD) and as high as $40,239,190.57 SGD ($29,185,058 USD).

Apart from size and age, the cost of a yacht in Singapore is dependent on various factors. First, it depends on whether the yacht is brand new or secondhand. If purchasing a secondhand yacht, determine if the previous owner was a yacht charter company or a private individual.

Yacht charter companies regularly sell their newly bought yachts in order to replace them with the latest models. This ensures that they offer the best to their customers. For buyers, this means you can find an ex-charter yacht that has been well-maintained, especially if it comes from a reputable charter company. Though upfront costs can be lower, you will also need to consider the cost of repairs. Given that it has been for public use, the interior and exterior are prone to wear and tear.

buy a yacht in Singapore: the brand affects the price

Second, the type of yacht also matters. The main types of luxury charter yachts are motor, sailing, catamaran, and gulet.

Third, just as a car from luxury brands such as Audi and Tesla is more expensive, the company that manufactured the yacht also dictates its price. There are different brands to choose from when deciding on what luxury yacht to buy. In line with this, the yacht designer, who meticulously crafted the details of the yacht, also plays a part in its value.

What Other Costs Should I Keep in Mind When Buying a Yacht in Singapore?

Apart from the cost of the yacht itself, there are other expenses that you should factor into your budget. These are listed below.

1. Fees to rent a berth and obtain membership in a marina

There are relevant rental fees charged for individuals who intend to berth their yacht at a marina. In Singapore, there are different marinas that you can choose from, such as the following:

  • One°15 Marina Club
  • Marina at Keppel Bay
  • Raffles Marina
  • Republic of Singapore Yacht Club
  • SAF Yacht Club
  • Marina Country Club (Punggol)
  • Changi Sailing Club

Each has its own services for berthing, additional amenities, and fees charged. For example, berthing a 50-to-60-foot yacht at ONE°15 Marina costs between $1,920 SGD and $2,300 SGD per month for members. But on average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $480 SGD to $1,500 SGD per month.

For those who plan to anchor their yacht, this can often be done for free. Take note that this will most likely come with restrictions, depending on where you are. Furthermore, there may also come a time when you decide to store your yacht on land. This would similarly incur expenses to rent space in a storage facility.

one marina

2. Maintenance and repairs of the yacht

For those buying a second-hand yacht, this often involves the need to refurbish both the interior and exterior. But beyond that, all yachts will eventually need maintenance and repairs later on. Expenses for regular cleaning services should also be included. Some would say that annual maintenance costs are roughly 5–10% of the yacht’s value. However, it would still depend on the frequency of use of the yacht and the weather conditions it is exposed to.

Expect to pay around $1,500 SGD to $2,000 SGD every month. This includes costs for fuel and repairs, should you use your yacht every weekend. The aforementioned amounts still lean toward what you can at least expect, so it may be more than that.

3. Equipment and accessories

Safety and communication equipment are must-haves when owning a yacht. This ensures that you’re well-prepared for unexpected situations should they arise. In general, it would be wise to keep a life jacket, a first aid kit, mooring lines and fenders, spare fuel, and others. Apart from that, batteries, pumps, lights, and oil are often recurring costs.

4. Insurance for the yacht

An insurance policy is a prerequisite for all yacht owners prior to the issuance of a pleasure craft license. The appropriate insurance coverage for your yacht will be determined by its size, age, docking place, and how it will be used. Some would advise having enough insurance to purchase a new yacht. This becomes beneficial in the unfortunate event that the whole of your yacht becomes damaged beyond repair or gets lost.

More often than not, insurance plans shoulder the costs associated with damage and/or loss of the yacht, legal liabilities to affected parties, and for the owners of the yacht themselves. Basic insurance plans usually cost $1,200 annually, at the minimum.

5. Getting a Pleasure Craft License and a Driving License

A pleasure craft refers to any craft that will be used within the port of Singapore for the purposes of sports or leisure. This excludes a craft used to board passengers who will go on sightseeing tours for a fee. When licensed by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the pleasure craft will be prefixed with “SZ.” This indicates that the craft is licensed for private use. The license fee costs between $30.00 and $100.00 per year.

driving a yacht

Apart from that, the person driving the yacht himself must apply for a powered pleasure craft driving license (PPCDL) or an Advanced Powered Pleasure Craft Driving Licence (APPCDL). Prior to the application of a license, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

  • Must be at least 16 or 18 years of age
  • Must have completed a recognized course about the handling of a powered pleasure craft
  • Must have obtained a valid medical certificate
  • Must have completed the PPCDL or APPCDL examinations administered by the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA)

On average, the courses cost $350, which includes both theoretical and practical lessons. Apart from that, the license examination fees cost between $20.00 and $100.00, while the issuance of the driving license costs $10.00 or $20.00.

With this, be prepared to spend at least $50,000 per year to own a yacht in Singapore. This price gives you the most affordable yacht there is, so it would be better to expect more than that. When you do decide to buy one, you will also have the option of earning money by renting it out. But even when this is not the case, living on the water and being able to explore by sea can make it well worth the investment.

Here's who could be responsible for paying for the Baltimore bridge disaster

  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a container ship collided with it.
  • Several entities could be on the hook to foot the bill in the aftermath of the disaster.
  • The maritime insurance industry will likely be saddled with the highest costs.

Insider Today

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on Tuesday after a large container ship ran into it, leading to six presumed deaths and millions of dollars in possible damage.

It's still too early to estimate the total economic impact of the disaster, but between the cost of rebuilding the decades-old bridge, compensating the victims' families , and paying out damages for disruptions to the supply chain, the eventual cost of the disaster is expected to be significant.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the federal government should be responsible for paying to reconstruct the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect Congress to support my effort," Biden said.

The bridge was built in the 1970s for about $60 million, but the cost of rebuilding it could be 10 times its original price tag, an engineering expert told Sky News.

Baltimore is among the busiest ports in the nation , with more than a million shipping containers passing through each year. The collapse — which closed the port to all maritime and most road traffic until further notice — is already beginning to wreak havoc on the supply chain.

The cost of building the bridge back fast enough to offset diversions as much as possible could saddle the government with a more than $600 million bill, David MacKenzie, the chair of the engineering and architecture consultancy COWIfonden, told Sky News.

Who will pay for damages to the ship and its cargo?

The container ship, the Dali , is owned by a Singapore-based firm. The ship's charterer, Maersk, confirmed to Business Insider that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship.

However, the companies with cargo aboard the Dali could ultimately be responsible for some of the ship's damages and cargo costs, according to Ryan Petersen , the CEO of the supply-chain-logistics company Flexport, which had two containers on the ship.

Related stories

The Dali was carrying 330 containers that must now be rerouted, Petersen said in an X thread.

An ancient maritime law known as " general average " dictates that companies with even a single container aboard a ship split certain damages pro rata based on the number of containers they had on board, ensuring all the stakeholders benefiting from the voyage are splitting the risk, Petersen said.

General average situations can occur when a ship is stranded or when cargo is damaged or thrown overboard to save the vessel, according to Flexport . The concept helps ensure that all parties who have a vested interest in the vessel share the cost and concern of protecting it.

It's too soon to know whether damages incurred to free the Dali in the coming days will qualify as a case of general average.

Who will pay for everything else?

The majority of the financial fallout is likely to lay primarily with the insurance industry, according to media reports.

Industry experts told the Financial Times that insurers could pay out losses for bridge damage, port disruption, and any loss of life.

The collapse could drive "one of the largest claims ever to hit the marine (re)insurance market," John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told Insurance Business.

He told the outlet that the loss of revenue from tolls while the bridge is being rebuilt will be expensive, as will any liability claims from deaths or injuries.

The Dali is covered by the Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association Ltd., known as Britannia P&I Club, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In a statement to Business Insider, Britannia said it was "working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Britannia is one of 12 mutual insurers included in the International Group of P&I Clubs, which maintains more than $3 billion of reinsurance cover, sources familiar with the matter told Insurance Business.

Britannia itself is liable for the first $10 million in damages, both FT and Insurance Business reported. Whatever remains is dealt with by the wider mutual insurance group and Lloyd's of London, a reinsurance market in the UK, the FT reported.

Update: March 28, 2024 — This story has been updated to include additional information about general average and clarify that it is too soon to know whether general average will apply in the case of the Dali.

Biden says Baltimore bridge rebuild should be paid for by the federal government after collapse

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay to rebuild the Baltimore bridge that collapsed early Tuesday after a large cargo ship sailed straight into one of the bridge's support pillars.

"We’re going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said in brief remarks from the White House before he left for North Carolina.

Biden said that it will take "some time" to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which transverses the Patapsco River, but that he told Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, that he's directing the federal government to "move heaven and earth" to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge "as soon as humanly possible."

He said he also plans to visit Baltimore as "quickly" as he can.

"Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families — especially those waiting for the news of their loved one right now," Biden said. "I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime. You just don’t know. It’s just terrible."

Biden said that a search and rescue operation is the top priority and that ship traffic and the Port of Baltimore have been suspended until further notice.

The Port of Baltimore, one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S., is the top port in America for both imports and exports of automobiles and light trucks, Biden said, noting that 850,000 vehicles are moved through the port annually.

"We’re going to get it up and running again as soon as possible. ... Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we’re going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers," he said.

He also said that the bridge is "critical for travel," not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor, saying more than 30,000 vehicles cross it daily.

Several vehicles plunged into the water when the collision occurred at 1:30 a.m. ET. At least six people were still believed to be missing, Moore said at a news conference. Sonar used by rescue crews also detected at least five vehicles in the water, he said: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle.

Moore said the ship, the Dali, which had just left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka, notified authorities about a "power issue" on board and issued a mayday moments before the crash. Moore credited that call with saving people's lives.

What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Here’s what we know so far.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

What to know about the cargo ship Dali, a mid-sized ocean monster that took down a Baltimore bridge

Crews were set to begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge in Baltimore on Friday. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said a large crane, which can lift up to 1,000 tons, would be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that collided with it this week.

The container ship Dali, owned by Grace Ocean PTE, rests against wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Patapsco River on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, as seen from Pasadena, Md. Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse, while in the waters below divers searched through twisted metal for several construction workers who plunged into the harbor and were feared dead. Here’s what to know about the cargo ship Dali that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and leaving six bridge construction workers presumed dead.

MONSTERS OF THE OCEAN

If stood upright, the Dali would reach almost to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or about two-thirds of the way up the Empire State Building in New York.

It can carry the equivalent of almost 10,000 standard-sized metal shipping containers, and at the time of the accident was carrying nearly 4,700 containers. But while those figures are impressive, the Dali pales in comparison to the world’s largest container ships, which can carry more than 24,000 containers. There are environmental and economic advantages to operating giant container ships , but their sheer size and weight make them difficult to maneuver and stop — especially when something goes wrong.

Dali length: 984 feet (300 meters). Weight: 95,000 tons when empty.

Capacity: 10,000 20-foot (6-meter) containers.

MAYDAY CALL SAVES LIVES

The ship shares a name with one of history’s most celebrated artists, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the Dali was launched in late 2014. It’s owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, flies a Singapore flag and is powered by diesel engines.

Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the Dali for a planned trip from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the ship didn’t get far, with the crew sending a mayday call early Tuesday saying they had lost power and had no control of the steering system. Minutes later, the ship rammed one of the bridge’s columns, causing the entire structure to collapse within seconds.

The ship was moving at about 8 knots, or 9 mph (15 kph). The mayday gave just enough time for authorities to stop bridge traffic and likely prevent more deaths , but not enough time to clear the construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge. Divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of two of the workers.

All of the nearly two dozen crew members from the Dali were accounted for after the accident, with one taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

PASSED PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS

The Dali passed a June 2023 inspection in Chile. A faulty pressure gauge for the fuel heaters was identified but fixed before the vessel left the port, according to authorities. The Dali was then inspected in September by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York, and no problems were found. Before it left Baltimore, the ship underwent routine engine maintenance, according to the Coast Guard.

Federal and state officials say the crash appears to be an accident.

The Coast Guard has downloaded the voyage data recorder and sent it to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is building a timeline of what led to the crash, and a preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks. Singapore also plans to carry out its own investigation, which it says will be to identify lessons for the future rather than determine liability.

WHAT’S NEXT

In addition to trying to clear the channel floor of the bridge debris, officials will need to assess the damage to the Dali and make sure it doesn’t leak fuel or sink. Investigators found damage to at least 13 containers on the ship.

The Dali will then likely be towed back to the port and the cargo offloaded.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says it’s too early to say how long it will take to reopen the Port of Baltimore or replace the destroyed bridge. He noted it initially took five years to build the bridge .
