A Rose is a Rose is a Rose, and Wood is Wood is…

The use of teak and mahogany is founded in practicality and tradition. both woods are handsome, durable and workable to a superb yacht finish..

For exterior uses in particular, teak is more common for a simple reason: the care of teak, compared to the demands of keeping up varnished mahogany, separates the merely industrious boat owner from the truly masochistic type. However much time is required to keep your oiled teak looking spiffy, remember that your neighbor with varnished exterior brightwork is spending double or triple that time on his wood.

The inside of the boat is another story. While teak and mahogany are still most common, a refreshing variety of other woods can be used. Several major boatbuilders have been experimenting with different varieties below, a trend which we encourage.

Mark the perimeter of the soft areas with a pencil. Then drill 1/4” holes on about 6” centers through the outer skin, being sure to position holes at both the high and low points of the delaminated area.

Perhaps the most important factor in the choice is that the wood fit in appropriately. This requirement does no limit the choice to woods that are already in the boat, but it certainly includes them.

It is a rather subjective call. The color, grain and traditional uses of a particular wood will speak to one craftsman and his fellow in different ways. Traditional woods, for example, vary according to region (white cedar in the Eastern US, western red cedar on the Pacific Coast, for ex-ample). A contrasting wood can lend warmth, lightness and elegance to the interior, but the varieties should be limited in number to prevent the appearance of confusion and clutter.

Less subjective is whether a wood has the appropriate characteristics to do a particular job. Holly splines are used1in teak cabin soles for the contrasting light color and because it does not turn black when exposed to water. Ash turns black when exposed to water, so should be used in relatively dry locations and should be varnished. Cedar is too soft for heavy wear applications, but serves well for ceilings. Hardwoods hold fastenings better than soft, but the softer woods glue better. The weight, durability, hardness, strength and workability of the wood should all betaken into account in matching the wood to its work.

Finally, there are the two factors which most control the choice: cost and availability. Some exotic woods which are highly desirable are too expensive to be worth the cost, or are simply unavailable in the US. In some cases, the local wood is the best choice just because it’s there. If you are doing extensive refurbishing, it may be worth a special order of the wood of your choice, but since transportation comprises a large part of lumber costs, it is still worth checking out the regionally grown species.

A word of caution: when purchasing wood, keep in mind that it is almost certainly kiln dried, which may have lowered its moisture content to below 10 %; the appropriate range for woodworking is generally regarded as something around 15 % .Time for seasoning should be built in to your work schedule to avoid large changes in the size and shape of the wood, particularly when large or long pieces are used in tight spaces.

For those who really want to be tantalized, read Chapter 4 of John Guzzwell’s book, “Modern Wooden Yacht Construction.” The discussion covers 55 woods suitable for boatbuilding, from abura to teak, from all parts of the world. You may never have heard of half of them, but by the time you have finished reading, you will have a good idea of which ones you would consider and whether they might be available.

Interior Woods Teak A dark and heavy wood of golden brown hue, teak is moderately hard and very resistant to decay. Although fairly easy to work, it splits easily and requires care to pre-vent unwanted fractures, particularly when drilling for fastenings. Because of a high silica content in the wood, tools dull quickly and carbide cutting blades are recommended. Its natural oiliness, which contributes to its rot resistance, also causes it to clog sandpaper quickly and can cause problems in gluing. It should be degreased with a solvent before making glue joints. It is best for cabin soles and high wear applications and can be finished with a teak sealer or oil, rather than varnished, in the interest of reducing maintenance. High demand has made it comparatively expensive, running $5-$7/board foot.

Mahogany Medium to dark reddish color characterizes this wood of medium weight and hardness although color varies from pink to dark brown. Honduras mahogany is preferable to African mahogany because the latter often has a highly figured, unruly grain which is difficult to plane smooth. In general, the mahoganies work easily and glue well. It is usually stained for best appearance, and must be varnished as it will discolor where exposed to water. The price varies with quality but is generally in the range of $2-$2.50/board foot.

Philippine Mahogany Not a true mahogany, the Philip-pine variety comes in light and dark red types. Avoid the light types, as it is softer and less durable than the dark. The darker Philippine mahogany is generally comparable to Honduras and African mahoganies for most uses, and costs less.

Butternut A native American wood of light color and light weight, butternut is soft, works easily, and must be varnished to protect its color and surface. It should be used in relatively protected applications, due to its softness, such as joiner work and ceiling, and is particularly attractive when trimmed with mahogany. A traditional wood in some of the better American yacht yards, butternut is not readily available outside the Northeast. It runs about $1.75-$2.25/board foot.

Ash Light in color, heavy in weight, American ash is native to the eastern US. It has a very hard surface, but works well and splits less readily than oak. Because it turns black if left exposed, it must be varnished. It is suitable for either ceiling or trim, but its weight should be considered where large amounts might be required. Price runs $1.75-$2.50/board foot.

White Cedar Very light in color and weight, white cedar is very soft, dents easily, but is easy to work and glue. It is likely to be knotty, so there is a fair amount of waste, which must be anticipated when ordering stock. It must be varnished. Excellent for ceilings, it is slightly aromatic and less expensive than some other woods at $1.50-$2/boardfoot.

Red Cedar Native to the northwestern US, red cedar is generally comparable to white cedar, except for its darker reddish color, greater aroma, and clearer grain. Price runs$2-$2.50/board foot.

Redwood Native to California, redwood is similar in characteristics-to red cedar. It varies in color from cherry to dark mahogany with a narrow white sapwood. Light in weight and moderately hard, it works easily and glues well, with high natural resistance to decay. It can be very attractive varnished, and is appropriate for cabinet work and paneling. Price is $1.50-$2.50/board foot.

White Pine Very light in color and weight, white pine is moderately soft and works easily. The cheaper grades tend to be knotty. While it serves well for general joiner-work, it is not usually used for a fine yacht finish and is often painted, but may be stained and varnished to almost any color. Because it is an important wood for general, non-marine applications, it is readily available; prices run$1.25-$2/board foot.

Exterior Uses Teak The overwhelming choice for exterior applications, teak is durable, and perhaps most important, can be recovered from a weathered state with relative ease. Its expense is more than offset by the neglect it can absorb. It should be oiled or varnished to prevent warping and checking which results from complete neglect. It is suitable for any exterior use.

Mahogany Elegant, but time consuming to maintain. It must be varnished to prevent darkening from exposure, and usually looks best if stained to produce a uniform color. Darkened wood can be bleached, but not always completely.

Iroko resembles teak in appearance, but is less durable and is not a good substitute for the real thing.

Our Boat as a Home

Watch the tour:.

Several friends have asked about the transition from life in bricks and mortar, to life afloat: ” How do we cope?” being the commonest. So here are my thoughts and views, as well as a tour of our boat. It may also be a useful insight for people who are toying with the idea of living aboard, or for people who are struggling to convince their partners that it is a good idea.

I know that all my sailor friends view thing differently. One of my good friends is a real sailing purist (as well as a phenomenal sailor). He actively shuns modernity on boats and will just about tolerate a transistor radio and a fridge as a nod to comfort on board. He does however have a very comfortable house not twenty metres from where he moors his boat. So central heating and SKY television are not really that far away. This was never going to be my idea of fun.

I also had to sell this dream of mine to Terysa, who, while happy to sail at weekends and the occasional week away, would possibly balk at the prospect of a pared down life in the long term.

So we chose a boat that could cope with the toughest conditions and also that we could cope with as a long term home.

We used to live in a three bedroomed flat in a leafy part of London. We often commmented that 70% of our living space was never used. We had a garden that we used to dine in and socialise for about six months of the year (weather permitting), so during the summer months we used even less of the internal space. Two of our bedrooms were never used, apart from gym equipment and space for friends and family to visit.

When we finally moved out we crammed everything we had into a storage unit. It is amazing to see how compact your possessions look when they are stacked in an orderly fashion. We also had to give some thing away. However it was suprisingly little. A couple of boxes of books to charity and Terysa had to cull her extensive collection of clothing and shoes. Everything else we took with us.

So the boat. We have 2 cabins, a saloon, 2 bathrooms (or “heads” in nautical parlance) and a cockpit. These four areas make up our living space, and a little explanation of each will go a long way. I will also apologise to my friends and readers of a nautical bent, as some of this is ” bleeding obvious”. However I am using my most land loving friend as a yardstick for my explanations.

Let me start with the cabins or bedrooms. We have 2 . One at the front and another at the back (fore and aft). Some boats of similar size cram up to four cabins into the space. However we chose to have 2. Obviously bigger boats allow for more space and more cabins. I think that the cabins were one of the greatest deciding factors when we chose this boat. We wanted a good sized double bed. It seems obvious if you have never stayed on a boat. However many boat make compromises regarding the cabins. Either the beds (or berths) are a strange shape, or more often than not one person ends up against a wall and needs to climb over the other to get out of bed. We wanted what is called an ” Island Berth”. It looks like a normal bed, and sleeps like a normal bed. It is also really comfortable. We have two settees inside the cabin as well as a seat. We have lockers, drawers and a wardrobe as well as numerous areas under the bed and sofas for all (or most) of our clothes, bedding and alike. We also mounted a television against one of the walls (or bulkheads). Terysa at first indicated that this was outrageously decadent. However on dark winter mornings, it is lovely to hide under the duvet, coffee in hand and watch the news without getting up.

Aft cabin with island berth

Aft cabin with island berth

The fore cabin is similar. We have ample storage space for most of our things under the forecabin bed, including spare sails and other occasionally used bits and bobs.

Both cabins have numerous opening hatches and blinds to keep out the light and let fresh air in. We also have good quality fans above the bed to provide cool air when it gets too hot.

Finally, both cabins are en-suite. They have separate doors leading into the heads.

These are our bathrooms, or rather shower rooms. They both have toilets, hot water, sinks and showers, as well as cabinets for wash things and shampoos and other potions I dont understand. This may seem obvious, however my first boat had no hot water, a basic toilet and no sign of a shower. Both heads are possibly slightly more compact than your average bathroom (unless you live in Hong Kong), but functional, and provide no significant compromise to living on land.

Our saloon

This area is undoubtedly the most versatile within our home. It has 2 long settees which run the length of the boat, as well as a table in the middle which extends for eating. We have huge swathes of lockers, cupboards and bookshelves. Everything we need fits into these for easy acccess. The saloon also has our chart table, akin to a desk in a home. We use it for navigation while at sea, but it is a good area to sit and look out at the world when at anchor. It also has the controls and monitors fro our solar, wind and hydro power, our radios and our stereo. The boat is all made in cherry wood, and with the pictures on the wall and our books on display, it is as comfortable and homely as the flat we left. We fitted a television and a blu-ray player and connected it all to a surround sound unit. We also shucked all our DVDs and blu-rays from their cases and brought them with us. Add to this an Apple TV unit, a hard disk with about 200 movies on and full internet access, and we have all of our home comforts with us.

Peeling veggies on Christmas morning

Peeling veggies on Christmas morning

The kitchen in any boat needs to be practical and useable, and at all times. Here we had to make some compromises from living on land, but these have been more than offset by the change in lifestyle. When we left London , we gave up our dishwasher, double oven and (by conscious decision) our microwave. We now have a cooker, oven, sink and a fridge, as well as our beloved coffee machine with a biblical supply of capsules hidden away. However, we have more time to cook, prepare, shop and eat. Terysa and I have always enjoyed good food. Not necessarily hugely expensive Michelin star restaurants, but good quality produce, whether cooked at home or abroad. I don’t think that many people will argue with the statement that fruit and vegetables grown in the sun taste better. Terysa for one would never eat tomatoes. Then we went to Greece, where they have taste, and are no simply insipid water bladdders. Now they form as staple part of our diet as potatoes do in Northern climes. So our lack of a massive freezer, ice dispenser and a fridge that you could hide a body in just isn’t necessary. We tend to spend our days ashore going to local produce markets, taking time to choose produce that is local and very tasty. We no longer need to sit at the window waiting for the Ocado van to appear as we have far more free time.

The Cockpit

DSC_0030_edited-1

As with all areas of our boat, the cockpit has multiple uses. When at anchor or port, or even when sailing, it is the area we tend to spend most time in. We have the steering positions at the very back of the boat. However forward of these is the cockpit itself. Like the saloon it has two teak benches. These will happily seat 6, although we have managed to cram 14 into the cockpit before. We have cushions and scatter cushions to allow lounging in multiple positions. We have a table in the centre of the cockpit which extends for meals, as well as multiple hand rails and grab points for when underway. Another set of good quality speakers allow us to listen to radio or music while underway .

We also have a bimini and sprayhood. These essentially are collapsible awnings that we can keep up or pack away at any point. The bimini is a Godsend when it’s hot. It keeps the sun off and allows a cool breeze to circulate. It also does a fair job of keeping the rain off when the skies open.

The spray hood much the same. It can be raised or dropped in a couple of minutes . This has more use when at sea as it does what it says on the tin; it keeps the spray off. In heavy weather we sit under it and it stops the wind, spray and rain from making the passage difficult. However as we tend to try and only sail when the weather is favourable, it is normally packed away unless necessary.

The decks and coachroof of the boat also give us the space to sunbathe, read or dose in multiple places.

All in all, the sacrifice we have had to make in the move from bricks and mortar to life afloat has been minimal. It is not for everyone, although for a couple a boat of this size is more than comparable to a 2 bedroomed flat.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

sailing yacht is a rose

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."

The United States Coast Guard announced Tuesday it has resumed its search for missing boater off the coast of North Carolina after suspending the search on Monday.

Jeffrey Kale , 47, from Clover, South Carolina , was last seen around 4 p.m. Saturday aboard a white 32-foot Cape Horn center-console boat departing the Southport Wildlife Boat Ramp, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said the search resumed after a good Samaritan located a vessel matching the description of the boat Kale was aboard. This was located nearly 83 miles east of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina according to the Oak Island police.

"Coast Guard Sector North Carolina issued an urgent marine information bulletin to mariners in the area, requesting assistance locating Kale," the Coast Guard said in a news release Tuesday. "Multiple U.S. Navy ships in the area responded to the urgent marine information bulletin and are assisting the Coast Guard in the search."

The Coast Guard said the vessel had fishing gear engaged and was moving northeast at about six miles per hour. There was nobody aboard and no visible damage to the vessel. A commercial towing company will retrieve the vessel and tow it to shore, according to the news release.

Search for Jeffrey Kale was previously suspended

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a notification from Kale's family stating he was overdue from a fishing trip around 10:30 p.m. Saturday and the Coast Guard began its search Sunday between Blackjack and Steeples, North Carolina.

After searching for approximately 72 combined hours and covering over 7,000 square miles, the Coast Guard announced Monday it had suspended its search for Kale.

“It is with heavy hearts that we suspend our active search for Mr. Kale,” said Cmdr. Corrie Sergent, Sector North Carolina deputy commander, in a news release Monday. “Our extensive search by air and sea with numerous crews, assets, and several good Samaritans, saturated the various areas we believed he may be."

Scientists identify origin of the 'BOAT' — the brightest cosmic blast of all time

"When we confirmed that the gamma-ray burst was generated by the collapse of a massive star, that gave us the opportunity to test a hypothesis for how some of the heaviest elements in the universe are formed."

A pinkish spherical blast is seen with a yellow laser-like streak strewn diagonally through the center. In the background, is it patchy and green.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scientists have finally solved the mysterious origins of the "BOAT," possibly the biggest cosmic explosion since the Big Bang.

The brightest gamma-ray burst of all time (hence the acronym the Brightest Of All Time ), aka the BOAT, seems to have been launched by a supernova explosion that accompanied the death and collapse of a massive star located around 2.4 million light-years away. This is an event that probably also led to the birth of a black hole. By solving this cosmic mystery, however, the team of astrophysicists has opened up yet another celestial puzzle. That's because traces of heavy elements like gold and platinum, traces one would expect to linger around this kind of supernova, are nowhere to be found.

"This was an event that Earth sees only once every 10,000 years," Peter Blanchard, team leader and a Northwestern University scientist, said in a statement. "The event produced some of the highest-energy photons ever recorded by satellites designed to detect gamma rays ."

"When we confirmed that the GRB was generated by the collapse of a massive star, that gave us the opportunity to test a hypothesis for how some of the heaviest elements in the universe are formed," Blanchard added. "We did not see signatures of these heavy elements, suggesting that extremely energetic GRBs like the BOAT do not produce these elements."

Scientists didn't miss the BOAT

The BOAT, officially designated  GRB 221009A , was first spotted on Oct. 9, 2022, and it immediately stood out from other GRBs due to its extreme nature. Astronomers spotted it as an immensely bright flash of high-energy gamma rays followed by a fading afterglow across many wavelengths of light .

The powerful GRB was first spotted by gamma-ray and X-ray telescopes, including NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory . After the BOAT's initial detection, awestruck astronomers rushed to find its potential source. They pointed their telescopes in the direction of the constellation Sagitta , believing that's where the answer must lie.

"As long as we have been able to detect GRBs, there is no question that this GRB is the brightest we have ever witnessed by a factor of 10 or more," one of the discoverers of the BOAT Wen-fai Fong, an associate professor of physics and astronomy and leader of the Fong Group at Northwestern, had said around the time of discovery.

Blanchard and colleagues, however, didn't rush to chase the BOAT.

Instead, they wanted to view the BOAT as it evolved, and track it during its later stages. Thus, they trained the JWST on the fading gamma-ray burst around six months after it was first spotted.

The brightest gamma-ray burst ever seen as observed by the Swift X-Ray Telescope around an hour after it erupted.

"The GRB was so bright that it obscured any potential supernova signature in the first weeks and months after the burst," Blanchard said. "At these times, the so-called afterglow of the GRB was like the headlights of a car coming straight at you, preventing you from seeing the car itself.

"So, we had to wait for it to fade significantly to give us a chance of seeing the supernova."

Using the JWST's Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument, Blanchard and colleagues observed the BOAT's infrared afterglow. This revealed the signature of elements like calcium and oxygen, all of which are characteristic of supernovas.

What was surprising, however, was the even though the BOAT is the most powerful cosmic eruption of its kind ever detected, the supernova that created it actually seemed pretty average for such an explosive stellar death.

"It's not any brighter than previous supernovas. It looks fairly normal in the context of other supernovas associated with less energetic GRBs," Blanchard said. "You might expect that the same collapsing star producing a very energetic and bright GRB would also produce a very energetic and bright supernova. But it turns out that's not the case. We have this extremely luminous GRB, but a normal supernova."

a large bright white fireball star emanates a sphere of fiery expulsion

The team isn't currently sure how a "normal" supernova could have created a blast of energy as massive as the BOAT.

Team member and University of Utah assistant professor of physics Tammoy Laskar thinks the extreme GRB could be a result of the shape and structure of near-light speed jets launched by collapsing massive stars as they create black holes. If a massive star is rapidly spinning when it collapses, then the beams it blasts out are narrow, then more focused, and, thus, brighter.

"It's like focusing a flashlight's beam into a narrow column, as opposed to a broad beam that washes across a whole wall," Laskar said. "In fact, this was one of the narrowest jets seen for a gamma-ray burst so far, which gives us a hint as to why the afterglow appeared as bright as it did.

"There may be other factors responsible as well, a question that researchers will be studying for years to come."

Furthermore, another aspect of this supernova that will warrant a much deeper investigation isn't something it has, but rather those things it appears to lack.

The missing elements

The hearts of stars are like stellar furnaces that fuse together light elements to create progressively heavier elements. This process forms elements right up to iron, but after that, even the most massive stars struggle to fuse heavier elements such as gold and platinum.

For many years, scientists have suspected that these relatively heavier elements are created when massively dense, dead stars called neutron stars smash together , with the JWST recently playing a key role in helping to confirm such a theory.

Yet researchers also thought the extreme environments created around supernovas capable of launching GRBs could facilitate the "rapid capture" of neutrons, or the "r-process," that forges elements like gold. The reason for this conjecture is neutron star collisions alone seem too rare to create the amounts of elements heavier than lead scientists see in the early universe .

An illustration of two neutron stars colliding and merging to create a kilonova blast that new research indicates may be perfect spheres

"There is likely another source. It takes a very long time for binary neutron stars to merge. Two stars in a binary system first have to explode to leave behind neutron stars. Then, it can take billions and billions of years for the two neutron stars to slowly get closer and closer and finally merge," Blanchard said. "But observations of very old stars indicate that parts of the universe were enriched with heavy metals before most binary neutron stars would have had time to merge.

"That's pointing us to an alternative channel."

That alternative channel had been theorized to be the collapse of a rapidly spinning and massive star, the exact type of event that scientists have now confirmed launched the BOAT.

Using the JWST, the team was able to peer into the deep layers of this supernova, where elements heavier than iron should be forged. "The exploded material of the star is opaque at early times, so you can only see the outer layers," Blanchard said. "But once it expands and cools, it becomes transparent. Then, you can see the photons coming from the inner layer of the supernova. Moreover, different elements absorb and emit photons at different wavelengths, depending on their atomic structure, giving each element a unique spectral signature."

That means looking at an object's spectrum can tell astronomers what elements are present.

"Upon examining the BOAT's spectrum, we did not see any signature of heavy elements, suggesting extreme events like GRB 221009A are not primary sources," Blanchard said. "This is crucial information as we continue to try to pin down where the heaviest elements are formed."

A reddish-orange, hazy disk is seen plunging out a bright white and blue stream from the center.

Blanchard also says that not detecting heavy elements around the BOAT's supernova source doesn't mean scientists should give up on studying the GRB channel of heavy-element production just yet.

"That doesn’t mean that all GRBs do not produce them, but it's a key piece of information as we continue to understand where these heavy elements come from," he said. "Future observations with JWST will determine if the BOAT's 'normal' cousins produce these elements."

In addition to learning more about the BOAT and confirming its origins with the JWST, the team was also able to detect the signature of an intense bout of star formation in the event's host galaxy. This indicated the star that died to birth the BOAT may have formed in a different environment than other supernova stars.

One aspect of this galaxy that could help further unravel the secrets of the BOAT is the fact that it appears to have a low concentration of elements heavier than hydrogen or helium, which astronomers called "metals."

"This is another unique aspect of the BOAT that may help explain its properties," team member and Penn State University graduate student Yijia Li said in the statement.

"We are fortunate to live in a time when we have the technology to detect these bursts happening across the universe," Blanchard concluded. "It's so exciting to observe such a rare astronomical phenomenon as the B.O.A.T. and work to understand the physics behind this exceptional event."

The research was published on Friday (April 12) in the journal Nature Astronomy.

WA shire president calls for greater military presence to stop boat arrivals, flags biosecurity concerns

Greater military presence is needed along Western Australia's northern coastline, according to a local shire president, after the arrival of another group of men suspected to be asylum seekers.

Authorities said the group were found near the  Mungalalu-Truscott Airbase in the far north Kimberley  on Friday, after arriving in an "unknown vessel".

RAAF plane coming in to land at Mungalalu Truscott Airbase.

It's the third boat to arrive in the Kimberley in the last six months, after 39 men travelled by boat from Indonesia to the small remote Indigenous community of Beagle Bay, about 100 kilometres north of Broome in February.

It followed the discovery of a group of asylum seekers at Truscott airbase back in November.

A group of men, their faces pixellated, climb aboard a ute on a dustry red outback road

Wyndham East Kimberley shire president David Menzel said the weekend's arrival to his shire was "a joke".

"We've got over 40 per cent of Australia's exports going out of this corner of the country and got a few soldiers somewhere guarding the whole show," he said.

"It just seems a bit of a joke that this sort of thing is happening."

Mr Menzel said the news was "no great surprise" and believed the recent arrivals were well informed, specifically targeting populated areas of the Kimberley coastline.

Man looking at camera, with blurred green background.

"Everyone says that they're landing in remote Australia … well I would view it slightly different; they're landing in our shire," he said.

"Whether they're landing on the peninsula north of Broome where there's plenty of communities that can welcome them, or whether they land on the Mitchell Plateau right at a major airport and piece of infrastructure and a community there, they are certainly well informed.

"I'd say they're pretty good navigators."

Biosecurity concerns

The boat arrival sparked an extensive land search after one of the men became separated from the group.

A man in a blue uniform and hat kneels down to look at items on the grass

In a statement, WA Police confirmed the man was found late Sunday afternoon in a "relatively good condition", not far from the Truscott airbase, where he received medical treatment.

Mr Menzel said while he hoped the group members were unharmed, he was concerned over the biosecurity risks posed by illegal boat arrivals.

"We don't really want people arriving here and suffering or potentially dying ... but there's also the biosecurity risk", he said.

"It's certainly not far from Indonesia.

"We know there's some significant threats just over that way, so we're probably more concerned that no one seems to care too much about the biosecurity risks."

The shire president said he hoped authorities were taking his concerns seriously.

"It'd be good to get an idea of whether they're serious about protecting Australia from that risk or whether they're happy to just pick people up when they arrive and take them to whichever facility they take them to," he said.

Nation's 'powerhouse' undefended

The chair of the North West Defence Alliance Matthew Niikkula said more surveillance off the state's coast was needed.

"The fact that it's the third boat that they found, that raises the question if there's others that haven't been found that have gone through," he said.

Scarborough gas plant.

"We have a huge amount of offshore oil and gas investments out there.

"It is the powerhouse of the country and currently it's totally undefended and very close to all of the activity that's happening to our north".

Mr Niikkula said deterrent messages to people travelling illegally by boat to Australia, weren't getting through.

"The best way to deter that is to increase and to make well known that there's plenty of coastal patrol out there and plenty of boots on the ground," he said.

Current policy 'is working'

Assistant Minister for Defence Matt Thistlewaite insists Operation Sovereign Borders remains strong.

"The majority of boats are turned back but there are occasions where you do have some arrivals," he told reporters in Perth on Monday morning.

Assistant Minister Matt Thistlewaite with HMAS Stirling naval base Commanding Officer Ken Burleigh.

"We want to be very clear that illegal migrants to Australia will come under the operation of Operation Sovereign Borders," he said.

"That means they'll be transferred to a third country for processing, such as Nauru."

Mr Thistlewaite dismissed suggestions the men were unfairly treated.

"Australia operates in accordance with humanitarian laws at all times [the policy] ensures that Australia continues to meet all its international obligations," he said.

"Operational sovereign border is a bipartisan policy and that involves boats being turned back where it's safe to do so."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended Australia's border policies on Sunday , saying Operation Sovereign Borders would not change.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Rescuers on the eastern Greek island of Chios on Wednesday recovered the bodies of three girls who died after a boat carrying migrants from nearby Turkey hit rocks, officials said.

Fourteen people, including eight other children, were rescued by the coast guard off rugged coasts on the northeast of the island, some 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Turkey. Two men were also found ashore.

Coast guard officials said three patrol vessels were looking for other possible survivors, while the boat is believed to have sunk.

Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea are a common entry point into the European Union for migrants using Turkey-based smuggling networks in waters patrolled by the EU border protection agency Frontex.
