I can go for that: five essential yacht rock classics

Katie Puckrick’s new TV doc reappraises the smooth, sad and seedy side of the maligned genre. Here she reveals the best tracks

  • Modern Toss on yacht rock

Christopher Cross: Ride Like the Wind (1979)

With its urgent pace and aim to “make it to the border of Mexico”, Cross sums up the exhilaration of escape so essential to yacht. The power of the genre lies in the longing, so it’s most effective when heard in a landlocked location a million miles away from the nearest marina. Since aspiration crosses class, it doesn’t matter whether one’s home turf is the country club or a trailer park: listening to this song has the same effect – it nurses that ache for freedom.

The Doobie Brothers: What a Fool Believes (1979)

A YR hallmark is “upbeat-downbeat”: an approach that folds life’s bittersweet complexities within happy-snappy musical flourishes. A great example of upbeat-downbeat is this Doobie Brothers classic, showcasing the misplaced optimism of a wounded romantic. Singer Michael McDonald is in full fuzzy-throated throttle. Those are his BVs on Ride Like the Wind, and on any number of Steely Dan tracks, including …

Steely Dan: Hey Nineteen (1980)

The frisson of yacht rock derives from its blend of bourgie feelgood bounce crossed with a shiver of thwarted desire. Steely Dan self-deprecatingly called their work “funked-up muzak” but, lyrically, there are none more acidic than these egghead jazzbos with tales of grown-up screw-ups. Thanks to LA’s session musician elite, Hey Nineteen is polished to a sheen, but the narrator’s regretful realisation that he is too old to mack on teenage girls makes for uneasy listening.

Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975)

Generally, female musicians didn’t focus their talents on the yacht genre: its palette was too limiting for the era’s sophisticated female artists beyond a song or two. In 1975, Mitchell made what’s considered “accidental yacht rock”. This chilly saga of tarnished love concerns a woman trapped in a big house and a loveless marriage. Mitchell made the misery of rich people seem glamorous, creating “dark yacht” in the process.

Toto: Africa (1982)

By the time the 1980s rolled around, black musicians had reclaimed the surging soul and quiet storm of yacht that was rightfully theirs. Artists such as George Benson, Lionel Richie and Raydio raised the bar by turning this “funked-up muzak” into a dance party. Ironically, an anthem called Africa turned out to be helmed by a clump of the whitest dudes going. With its questing lyrics and triumphant chorus, it became a blockbuster smash for the ages, proving that yacht rock is for ever.

I Can Go for That: The Smooth World of Yacht Rock begins Friday 14 June, 9pm, BBC Four

  • Pop and rock

King of Prussia is a suburban community in the greater Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania in Montgomery County . It is northwest of Philadelphia proper. It is located in the township of Upper Merion, PA. The community took its name in the 18th century from a local tavern named "The King of Prussia Inn", which was named after Frederick II, King of Prussia . King of Prussia's boundaries are the Schuylkill River to the north and U.S Route 422 to the west. Located to the west of King of Prussia is the village of Valley Forge , where General George Washington and the Continental Army made a winter encampment during the winter of 1777-78.

Understand [ edit ]

King of Prussia is a suburban community that is located 20 miles northwest of the city of Philadelphia in Montgomery County in southeastern Pennsylvania . The town developed around the King of Prussia Inn, a tavern that was built as a cottage in 1719 at what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 202 (Dekalb Pike) and Gulph Road. The cottage became an inn called Berry's Tavern in 1769 and was popular with travelers as it was a day's travel by horse from Philadelphia. General George Washington visited the inn on Thanksgiving Day in 1777. During the winter of 1777-78, General Washington and the Continental Army made their winter encampment nearby in Valley Forge while the British occupied the city of Philadelphia. By 1786, Berry's Tavern became known as the King of Prussia Inn, named after Frederick II, King of Prussia. King of Prussia would remain a rural area into the 20th century. In the middle of the 20th century, King of Prussia saw extensive suburban development. The town is now home to several office parks and retail space that developed around the convergence of the Schuylkill Expressway, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, U.S. Route 202, and U.S. Route 422. King of Prussia is considered an "edge city" of Philadelphia, an area with business and shopping outside the central business district of a city in what was once a rural area.

King of Prussia has a humid subtropical climate with four seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with highs averaging in the 80s and lows averaging in the 60s. Summer temperatures occasionally rise to the 90s or 100s. Winters are cool to cold, with highs averaging in the low 40s and lows averaging in the 20s. Winter temperatures can occasionally drop down to 0 degrees or lower. Spring and fall can be variable, usually with milder weather. King of Prussia averages 48.49 inches of precipitation a year, which is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The area does see snow in the winter months, with some winters seeing only light snow and other winters bringing large snowstorms. In the warmer months, the area does experience thunderstorms, some of which can be severe. King of Prussia is prone to tropical storms and hurricanes from the Atlantic basin in the late summer and early fall, but typically only receives the remnants of such storms as they typically weaken by the time they reach this latitude.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) provides access to King of Prussia from Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76 to the west and I-276 to the east) toll road provides access to King of Prussia via the Valley Forge interchange from points west such as Harrisburg and Pittsburgh and points east such as the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City. U.S. Route 202 provides access to King of Prussia from West Chester to the south and from Norristown to the north. U.S. Route 422 provides access to King of Prussia from Pottstown, Reading, and other communities along the Schuylkill River to the northwest.

If you are coming from Center City, Philadelphia, get on I-676 (Vine St Expressway), then go I-76 towards Valley Forge. Stay on I-76 for about 30 minutes. After proceeding on I-76 get off at the King of Prussia exit. If you want to go to the King of Prussia Mall follow the exit signs for Mall Boulevard. If you are coming from the suburbs of Philadelphia, take the Pennsylvania Turnpike towards Harrisburg, then proceed to the Valley Forge exit.

By plane [ edit ]

Fly into Philadelphia International Airport ( PHL  IATA ), take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft or rent a car. The trip from there to King of Prussia takes 30 minutes. King of Prussia is 26 miles from Philadelphia International Airport.

By bus [ edit ]

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) provides bus service to King of Prussia. Many of the buses stop at the transit center adjacent to The Plaza at the King of Prussia Mall. There are two routes that connect King of Prussia with Center City Philadelphia. Bus 124 provides service to Center City Philadelphia and to Chesterbrook, with a stop at the King of Prussia Mall transit center. Bus 125 runs from Valley Forge National Historical Park and the King of Prussia directly into the Center City Philadelphia. You can catch it along Gulph Road and at the King of Prussia Mall transit center. You will arrive near the train station at 30th St and Market St; from there, you walk a few feet to the station itself and get on the eastbound subway towards the Old City and other attractions. The base fare for the 124 and 125 buses is $2.50. The buses run every 20 min during peak hours and every hour off-peak, during the weekdays, and the trip takes around 40 min. While taking a bus may seem inconvenient, you will save time and hassle by not driving into Philadelphia yourself. Relax and let the bus driver fight the traffic. You will save even more time and money since you don't have to find a place to park your car in the city. In the reverse direction, the last bus leaves Philly (again at 30th and Market) at about 10PM, on weekdays. The 124 and 125 buses also run on Saturday and Sunday.

There are several bus routes that connect King of Prussia with nearby suburbs. Bus 92 connects the King of Prussia Mall with West Chester and Exton in Chester County Monday through Saturday. Bus 99 connects the King of Prussia Mall transit center with Norristown and Phoenixville daily. Bus 123 connects the mall with the 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby daily. Bus 139 connects the King of Prussia Mall with Limerick Monday through Saturday. The base fare for all these bus routes is $2.50.

Check the SEPTA website for additional information.

By train [ edit ]

There is not a train station close to the King of Prussia Mall. The nearest train stations are in neighboring Conshohocken , at Washington Street and Harry Street, and Norristown Transportation Center, at Schuylkill Avenue and Dekalb Street. The Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Line will take you to the city center from these stations. The train ride takes about 30 min. The weekday fare is $6.00 in advance/$7.00 on board one-way and $12.00 in advance/$14.00 on board round trip. The evening/weekend fare is $5.25 in advance/$7.00 on board one-way and $10.50 in advance/$14.00 on board round trip. Check SEPTA's website for timetables. The stations have a park-and-ride lot, but spaces may not be available to tourists. SEPTA's Bus 99 provides service from the Norristown Transportation Center to the King of Prussia Mall.

SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line, which runs between Norristown Transportation Center and 69th Street Terminal, also serves the King of Prussia area, with the Gulph Mills station located at Trinity Lane and Crest Way near Gulph Road southeast of the mall. However, it would be a long and dangerous walk from the mall area. Buses 124 and 125 connect the Gulph Mills station with the King of Prussia Mall.

By bicycle [ edit ]

The Schuylkill River Trail provides bicycle access from Philadelphia to King of Prussia and Valley Forge, following the Schuylkill River. Access from the trail to King of Prussia and Valley Forge is provided by a bicycle/pedestrian bridge called Sullivan's Bridge across the Schuylkill River at Valley Forge National Historical Park. The Schuylkill River Trail also provides bicycle access to the area from points along the river to the northwest. The Chester Valley Trail provides bicycle access to King of Prussia from points in Chester County as far west as Exton.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Traffic in this area is thick and fast-moving, especially during rush hours (7-9AM and 4-6PM). Expect the interchanges to be backed up to the point where there are lines of cars winding around the nearby neighborhoods. Try to familiarize yourself with the traffic flow before you try driving in it, because if you are in the wrong lane trying to get onto one of the freeways, you will probably not be able to move over and will have to go the wrong direction and take a detour. Gulph Rd and Schuylkill River Rd are winding, steep, and have surprisingly high speed limits even though there are houses on them. Watch out for hidden driveways and sudden stops.

Be careful walking around the town. There are few crosswalks or pedestrian signals. Near the mall, you will be forced to jaywalk if you want to get anywhere on foot. It is not a pedestrian-friendly area by any means.

Located at the King of Prussia mall, this record shop has a large selection of different vinyl and other music media. There are many genres and a decent selection here. Like previous reviews, I also agree the prices here tend to be higher than other places. However, you can find some good albums or 45s with a somewhat reasonable price. The staff here re very nice and helpful. Overall service is god. This place also sells record players and other music playing devices so it can be worth checking out. If you are looking for something specific I definitely would check this lace out. There definitely are cheaper options though.

Copped some madgibbs there today. Along with some Lonnie Liston Smith n other fire LP's. Small hip-hop section, though most always worthwhile for the average consumer to the expert. Very solid LP and CD section for all other genre's. Tape section is smaller though looked thorough. Art and other musical equipment is for sale as well. Make sure to dig thru the sale crates !

The Rock Shop took me back to how record stores were like in the 80's. All music items. No movie, TV show or video game related merch. Quite refreshing. You get new & used CDs, vinyl, cassettes, & even some eight tracks (remember those?) Metal is separated out from the main rock/pop bins. The new CDs were a mixture of older & newer artists. Prices varied. I observed prices from $9.99 to $17.99. Posters, tie-dye shirts, buttons, magnets, rock t-shirts, record players, storage crates, framed pictures, & baby onesies rounded out the inventory. I purchased 2 used CDs that amounted to about $20. The sales clerk who rang me up was polite, professional, & masked up. If you're missing the mall record store experience, The Rock Shop is worth shopping in. It was encouraging to see that it was bustling with customers, younger & older. You won't find the complete catalogue of any one artist here, but you still might find something to add to your collection.

Great selection and mostly organized record store. I'm not really accustomed to going to a record store in a mall, but I'm glad I gave this place a chance because they really have a great selection. I got so many good vinyl records at this Rock Shop, it was good that I actually had to cut my visit short. It was getting too crowded in the shop, and if I stayed longer, I would have probably doubled my bill!

Picked Up Alice In Chains Rainer Fog good release and their third as a revamped group Robert Duvall and Jerry Cantrell work good together!

Picked up Alice In Chains From Black To Blue great release and a great price keep up the good work this is a great location and easy to locate also I was quite impressed I'll be back people who work here seemed nice was chatting with one about music playing while I was their and also answered a brain cramp question I could not think of while I was their who happened to be Linkin Park RIP Chester Bennington !

This place is a gem. Seriously. I have been looking for a GOOD record store and this it it! They have a huge collection that includes basically everything. If you don't care about how pristine your cover is - there is a whole buy one get one free section in the back where you can make out like a bandit. There is a lot of cool newer stuff and collectible type records but I kind of skipped over them and just did a massive haul of some classics to round out my collection a bit! The people that work here are also really nice! Don't forget your punch card too, so you can earn $$ back! Great incentive to keep going! If records aren't your thing but you still like music, they have a lot of other memorabilia as well like tees, pops, etc. Definitely a must visit. Right near Primark's lower level!

I think the pros of this store far outweigh the cons, but it's not perfect. One good thing is that the store has an amazing selection of music! Easily the best selection of any record stores in the area. Whether you want R&B, hip-hop, rock, they have it all! It's truly impressive. The workers there are pretty nice as well, and help with any questions I have. They also have a buy 2 get 1 free section. The only downside is this can be a bit of a hit or miss, at least it was for me. Maybe not so much for other people. But either way you can walk out with 3 records for $10 which ain't bad. Unfortunately the prices of records are a little higher than other places. Records that you can find at Walmart, Barnes and noble, or even other record stores, are marked a little high. I suppose that has to do with them being located in the mall, but something worth being pointed out. My other (small) gripe is how bootleg vinyls are handled here. It seems that the bootlegged vinyl has an import sticker put on it. The problem with this is that someone that doesn't recognize that it is a bootleg may not get this, thinking it's an official release. There isn't any specific section for these bootleg records either. They are mixed into the bunch. Overall. A place worth checking out, especially if you are after a specific album or artist. You may not get a great deal, but you may just find what you are looking for!

This is my first time in this location of 'The Rock Shop' but I am familiar with it because I shop regularly at the one in the Plymouth Meeting Mall which is closer to where I live. The thing about the Rock Shop is there is a bit of a trade off. It can get pricey, for both new and used items and that is perhaps the biggest drawback. On the other hand, the selection of Cds, vinyl, cassettes and more is amazing!! I have found so many good finds I wouldn't have found anywhere else, and would otherwise had to order online. They always are up to date with new releases too and can order any of them in if they don't have it in stock. Overall it is a great store with a fantastic collection, it is just a question if you will agree with the prices.

The Rock Shop expands and opens store in King of Prussia Mall

Source, The Times Herald , Gary Puleo

“The more things change the more they stay the same.”

Would you ever have guessed that accurate old French saying would ever apply to the King of Prussia Mall?

Probably not if you’re one of the longtime shoppers who have said that, with its focus on high fashion stores, the mall had lost much of its character in the last few decades.

But now those folks may be happy to learn that, according to Roy Thomas, owner of The Rock Shop, mall owner Simon Properties has been looking to bring back two types of stores that were once dominant entities here — a book store and a music shop.

With The Rock Shop having created a cozy haven of used and new vinyl and CDs in the old Radio Shack on the lower level of what many locals still affectionately refer to as The Plaza, the mall has handily accomplished one of those directives.

“They see value in an interesting independent retailer,” said Thomas, who also owns The Rock Shop stores at Hamilton Mall, Mays Landing, N.J., and Plymouth Meeting Mall, which debuted in 2014. “I’d approached (former mall owner) Kravco in the ’90s when I was doing kiosks in the malls, and I loved King of Prussia but the rent was always way out of my league. But I think because we went to Montgomery Mall and were considering opening our third store there, we showed up on Simon’s radar and they suggested we come to King of Prussia Mall. Radio Shack was going under and they thought this would be a good space for us.”

Ironically, The Rock Shop is nostalgically situated not far from where Record Museum, one of the area’s quirkiest record shops back in its day, held forth at The Plaza for many years.

While serious record collectors never abandoned what they believed to be a warmer, superior delivery system for music, the resurgence in vinyl is being driven largely by a generation of kids who grew up on digital music and also, noted Thomas, the annual phenomenon in April known as Record Store Day, which started in 2007

“The market is so strong overall because there are so many different aspects to why people are collecting vinyl. You have the audiophiles, the collectors, the new kids and people who are buying records because it’s trendy,” said Thomas. “But kids are sure driving the vinyl sales as they discover it for the first time. It’s not a nostalgic thing for them.”

A record store once offered a kind of a clubhouse atmosphere, Thomas said.

“It was a place to escape from your daily routine and talk to the clerks about concerts and music, something you can’t get online. You remember the time and place where you bought an album, where downloading is meaningless, clicking and tapping on digital thumbnails. You can’t beat browsing through bins and deciding which album you want and holding the record in your hand … that experience stays with you and that’s what we’re trying to recreate. Adults are rediscovering the throwback atmosphere of a record store, but kids have never seen anything like it and they’re fascinated by it.”

On the counter nearby sat a copy of Elton John’s legendary 1973 double album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” with the original gatefold and its compelling artwork by Ian Beck on the cover and inside illustrating Bernie Taupin’s lyrics.

“They’re getting back to some of that great packaging again, with the gatefolds and liner notes,” noted Thomas, citing modern band Murder By Death and its album “As You Wish: Kickstarter Covers,” featuring covers of tunes by David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen and a gatefold that opens to eight feet in length.

“If something means something to you then you want the physical version of it and you can’t do that with Spotify or Pandora. You want to have the artwork and lyrics, and you need to care for the record, and that connects you even more to it. That’s an important emotional connection,” Thomas said.

“The double album used to be a risky move, now it’s everything. For any pop star, like Taylor Swift, it’s always double vinyl now,” noted manager Dan Cathcart, who’s been with Thomas since the Plymouth Meeting Mall debut.

Landing a job with The Rock Shop means starting out with a passion for vinyl, Cathcart added.

“We prefer people who are already passionate about records and then we can teach them how to do things from there,” he said, explaining that applicants are given a questionnaire to test their basic rock knowledge (“name the first four Pink Floyd albums”; “what band was Eric Clapton in?”).

In addition to records, CDs and cassettes, The Rock Shop stocks a variety of band T-shirts and eye-catching banners featuring such acts as The Who, Guns N’ Roses and Jimi Hendrix.

Thomas said he routinely stocks new releases and is always on the lookout for unwanted vinyl.

“A lot of our market is second-hand buying and trading records with the public,” he said.

The Rock Shop at King of Prussia Mall, 160 N. Gulph Road, is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Phone: 610-265-1074.

Hanging Rock

On 12/24/1997, the Overhanging Rock, also known as the Hanging Rock, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

From the US Department of the Interior National Park Service application…

To protect the Hanging Rock, in 1924, the 24,000 sq ft strip of land surrounding it was purchased by Lidie McFarland Anderson (Mrs. J. Aubrey Anderson), who, in turn, donated it to the Valley Forge Historical Society to ensure its perpetual preservation.

On the anniversary of the march to Valley Forge, December 19, 1924, a bronze plaque was placed on the Rock to commemorate the historic march by the Continental Troops in December 1777. The plaque read: “General Washington and the American Army passed under this rock on the march to Valley Forge December 19, 1777. The overhanging rock was presented to the Valley Forge Historical Society for perpetual preservation” The bronze plaque was removed sometime in the 1950’s without permission. The location of the plaque is unknown.

The Hanging Rock has been altered in appearance over the years most significantly by man as well as the natural erosion process. Proposals for the removal have been submitted by the Pennsylvania Highway Department and later by PennDot.

Another threat to the rock occurred in 1954. The plans included a “shaving” back of the rock or the entire destruction of it. Holes were drilled in the rock for the placement of dynamite to blow it up, but again, the public and the local preservation community banded together to save the rock once more. Almost twenty years later, the same threat cropped up once more. The discussion centered around the “shaving” back of the rock. The project was to be completed in 1972, however, the state lacked the funds to proceed with the project. In 1974, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation filed to take the rock by eminent domain; but again the funding was not there and the rock remained. The question of its future existence on Gulph Road fired up the public debate once more in the 1980’s and again in 1995.

While the appearance has changed, the rock is still— and will continue to be what it always has been: a rock hanging over the road. However, the Hanging Rock continues to be a recognizable landmark associated with the Revolutionary War and much, much more. Hundreds of people have banded together over the years in support of the Rock. The battles they fought to preserve it are a testimony to their conviction for what the Rock represents.

URBN brands

Blue Rock remodeled and constructed new retail spaces for URBN brands Anthropologie, Free People, Urban Outfitters and Pizzeria Vetri in the Pavilion at the King of Prussia Mall, just outside Philadelphia, PA.

All projects started in June 2016 and finished together for a Grand Opening in October, just a five-month construction turnaround.

Along with work on the four brands, Blue Rock constructed a shared-services, back-of-house space on the third floor that includes 7,540 square feet of offices, visual merchandise rooms, conference rooms, stockrooms and employee breakroom.

For Urban Outfitters , Blue Rock delivered a complete renovation of the first and second floors while keeping the store open to the public.

Other project highlights include:

  • Expanding second floor an additional 6,290 SF
  • Existing stockroom converted to an additional sales area
  • Demising wall removed to accommodate expansion on second floor
  • New demising wall added to separate Pizzeria Vetri space
  • Remodeled manager’s office
  • Relocated storage room to third floor

At 19,800 square feet, Anthropologie is nearly three times the size of its average store. The new store features reclaimed wood flooring, plus a custom plaster finish at the storefront and throughout the sales area.

Moving from its original mall location, the 8,200-square-foot Free People is its largest to date.  The storefront features custom hand-carved beams imported from India. There’s also reclaimed wood flooring and custom plaster finishes throughout the store. Exterior windows and new skylights were added to flood the store with natural light.

Pizzeria Vetri is located next door to the Urban Outfitters on the second floor. Blue Rock delivered an 8,780-square-foot concourse common area centrally located on the second floor that includes a seating area for Pizzeria Vetri, and a sit-down bar equipped with three TVs.

Blue Rock also added structural steel and new concrete floor slab to close the existing mall opening between the first and second floors. The concourse work includes renovations of changing mall finishes to match URBN’s aesthetics.

The project marked the first time all three clothing brands, plus a Pizzeria Vetri restaurant, were constructed in the same space.

Testimonial

“From the start, Blue Rock’s attention to detail and management of all subcontractors and work site personnel was outstanding. Blue Rock’s project managers communicated well with our team and were responsive to our questions and concerns throughout this demanding project.” READ MORE – Ken Masri, Development, Urban Outfitters, Inc.
