Yachtsman Sumner “Huey” Long 1921-2011
- By Cruising World Staff
- Updated: January 6, 2012
Sumner “Huey” Long
Sumner “Huey” Long, an international yachtsman, shipping executive, and winner of many of the world’s most challenging and dangerous ocean races, died of lymphoma on December 4, at age 90.
Creating a succession of hi-tech racing sailboats named Ondine , and spanning the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s, Mr. Long won every major ocean race in the world, including the Transatlantic Race on four occasions (a record), the Newport-Bermuda Race (establishing a course record), the Sydney-Hobart Race (establishing a course record), the Fastnet Race, and the Buenos Aires-Rio Race (also establishing a course record).
Ondine II was the first all-aluminum ocean racer ever built. A 57-foot yawl designed by Bill Tripp, she went on to win races against much larger opponents, sometimes due to clever innovations by Mr. Long. One of these, an ultra-heavy spinnaker, almost caused a mutiny when in a 50-knot Atlantic gale, Mr. Long fought with his crew to get it raised, earning him the title of “a modern day Captain Bligh” by Sports Illustrated. A subsequent yacht, Ondine VII was designed by German Frers. That yacht won the first Maxi Yacht World Championship in 1985, held at Newport, Rhode Island. In that event, Ondine VII was victorious in the first on-the-water protest hearing ever held, a practice that is now standard in world-class match racing events.
Mr. Long helped boost the careers of many aspiring world-class skippers who crewed for him, including Ted Turner who went on to win the America’s Cup in 1977, Bill Koch, the brother of David and Charles Koch, who won the Cup in 1992, and Mr. Long’s son Russell who, under his father’s guidance, introduced corporate sponsorship to the Cup event, and became the youngest American skipper in Cup history.
Long, the son of Lithuanian immigrants, was raised in Boston where his family started a jewelry business. He graduated from Brookline High School, received an appointment to the Annapolis Naval Academy, and after serving as acting chief officer on a merchant marine vessel in World War II, received degrees from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This led to a career in shipping and ultimately established Mr. Long as one of the most successful tanker brokers in the world. Among his clients and friends were Aristotle Onassis and many other prominent ship owners.
Mr. Long, who also had a reputation as somewhat of a bon vivant, would often entertain celebrity guests on his yachts, some of whom crewed for him in major ocean races. These included HRH King Harald of Norway (who was addressed by the crew as “Harry the Hat” for the wide brims he wore to protect his pale skin), HRH King Olav of Norway, HRH Prince Albert II of Monaco, HRH King Juan Carlos of Spain, The Aga Khan, Teddy Kennedy Sr. and Jr., and beauty queens such as Miss Australia and Miss Sweden. Mr. Long’s last boat, a 105 footer named Ondine VIII , built in 1988, was considered at the time one of the world’s most elegant sailing yachts, was co-owned with Charles Evans, co-founder of fashion house Evan-Picone and the producer of Academy Award winning film, Tootsie.
Mr. Long is survived by his second wife of 30 years, Suzanne McDonnell Long, his sons Harry and Jack Long, and Russell Long, from his first wife, Jane Bagley Lehman.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Long at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, New York, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7.

SW100 L’ONDINE TRIUMPHS IN THE 2021 ROUND GOTLAND RUNT RACE
An iconic 100-footer built by Southern Wind in 2009, SW100 L’Ondine has placed first in a fleet of ninety-three boats to win the 2021 Round Gotland Runt offshore race in the Baltic Sea.
Starting in the centre of Stockholm , the fleet sailed through the Stockholm Archipelago and around the island of Gotland to the finish at Sandhamn . The 355 NM course was first sailed 1937 and is considered to be the largest annual offshore race in the world.
Passing the finishing line after 35 hours of thrilling sailing, with an average speed above 11 knots, L’Ondine placed first in the SRS class and more than three hours ahead of the second place finisher on corrected time.
When receiving the trophy, L’Ondine’s owner Martin Bjäringer could not hold back his enthusiasm, telling us: “Thirty-four years after competing in this race on the first L’Ondine, I am so proud to be back with our third L’Ondine and to accept this prize. My special thanks to the great group of friends and crew that joined me on the race and played their magic to make L’Ondine do what she was built to do!”
Southern Wind’s Deputy Commercial Manager, Jeremy Peek was part of the racing crew during the Gotland Runt race and added: “This has been an incredible experience, the sailing conditions were near perfect and we combined great sailing with lots of laughs and a brilliant collection of sailors. Short tacking a 100-footer through the Stockholm Archipelago was no easy task and we are delighted with the results.”
We wish to congratulate L’Ondine’s owners and crew for this great achievement!

L'Ondine is a custom sailing yacht launched in 2008 by Southern Wind Shipyard.
Southern Wind Shipyard was founded in 1991 by the Italian entrepreneur Willy Persico, the current Managing Director. The headquarter where yachts are produced is in Cape Town, South Africa, in the industrial zone, a few kilometres from the International Airport and it spreads over a 17.000 sqm area, of which 12.000 sqm under roof.
L'Ondine measures 30.20 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.60 metres and a beam of 6.70 metres.
L'Ondine has a GRP hull with a GRP superstructure.
Born in 1985 and acting initially as a yard, Nauta Yachts presented a style and an idea to the market which proved instantly successful, as they designed and built semi-custom sailing yachts, both innovative and soberly elegant. They produced sailing yachts which were both innovative at that time and featuring timeless beauty, such as the Nauta 54’, 70’ and 65’ semi-custom series.
L'Ondine also features naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design.
Performance and Capabilities
L'Ondine has a top speed of 10.5 knots. She is powered by a single screw propulsion system.
L'Ondine has a fuel capacity of 5,000 litres, and a water capacity of 2,100 litres.
She also has a range of 3,400 nautical miles.
Other Specifications
L'Ondine has a hull NB of SW 100 DS / 8.

Ondine Under Bare Poles: Lessons learned from a dismasting
“From the CCA School of Hard Rocks
...lessons learned in pursuit of the Art of Seamanship”
By John Jourdane, Southern California Station The Cruising Club of America February 2022
I was sailing on the 82-foot Maxi racing yacht, “Ondine 4”. We had delivered the new boat from Palmer Johnson Shipyard in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, down the St. Lawrence River, across the North Atlantic to Norway, then into the Mediterranean to Sardinia, where we participated in the Maxi World Championships.
We raced for a week against a dozen other maxis. We did well, but lost to Kialoa, then headed back across the Atlantic to New York City. Our course was the great circle route, which took us north of the Azores and Bermuda.
When we were about half way across, our weatherfax showed a tropical storm developing off the Caribbean, which turned into Hurricane Irene. We tracked Irene and saw that it was heading for Bermuda.
We were just past Bermuda when the wind started to build. As it went to 30 knots, then 40, we put in reefs and a storm jib. The wind built to 50 knots, and we dropped the storm jib and just used a deeply reefed delivery mainsail. As Irene neared, we had a steady 60 knots with gusts to 70. As the sun went down, we decided to go to bare poles, or “scudding”, which is sailing downwind with no sails. We put out all our sheets and halyards as a drogue off the stern to slow us down and to keep our stern facing the breaking 30-foot waves. This was before commercial drogues were available.
We changed our watch schedule so only one person was on deck steering for a half hour, wearing a life jacket and harness and hooked onto jacklines in the cockpit.
In the middle of the night, the boat yawed while surfing down a wave, turned beam-on to the breaking wave, and we broached. The boat heeled well beyond 90 degrees. Fortunately I was in a leeward bunk, but the crew in the weather bunks were thrown out and across the interior. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.
We then heard a loud crash, and the boat stood back up. Everything seemed to calm down, but we had broken our mast.
We couldn’t do anything on deck given the nasty conditions, so we just drifted in the rough seas until dawn. The conditions lightened as Irene died down and moved away.
One big problem with breaking a mast is that there are no halyards to send someone up in a bosun’s chair. You need a monkey bowman who can shimmy up and cut away the shrouds and broken mast. We had a monkey, Kiwi Dave, who climbed up the mast, lashed lines for a headstay and backstay, then lashed blocks at the top so we could have a bit of main and storm jib halyard.
Then we slowly motor sailed to the nearest island, Saint Pierre, south of Newfoundland and about 350 miles away.
We called the owner, told him what had happened, and asked what he wanted us to do. He said to take the boat back to Sturgeon Bay, where Palmer Johnson could fix it. We loaded up with fuel and headed back up the St. Lawrence River, across the Great Lakes, and arrived safely at Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
What did we learn?
- Never sail under bare poles in extreme weather. You need to be proactive and be able to hoist a bit of sail up to maneuver and not get beam-to on breaking waves.
- Our hurry to get home may have affected our judgment. We should have sailed away from Hurricane Irene until it passed or died down.
- We should have had storm sails aboard that our crew had practiced setting and using.
One caveat: this advice is for monohull sailing. Multihulls are different: They often use stacked sails, which is like having a storm trysail up, and with modern drogues, they can keep stern to the waves.
The Cruising Club of America is a collection of passionate, seriously accomplished, ocean sailors making adventurous use of the seas. All members have extensive offshore boat handling, seamanship, and command experience honed over many years. “School of Hard Rocks” reports, published by the CCA Safety and Seamanship Committee, are intended to advance seamanship and help skippers promote a Culture of Safety aboard their vessels .

Adorable Story #1: Racing with Ondine
From french folklore to ocean races and haute cuisine.
Racing with Ondine
Charles Masson (right), proprietor of New York restaurant La Grenouille, prepares a meal on the deck of the yacht 'Ondine', owned by Sumner Long (centre), Bermuda, June 1970. That year, Masson was the yacht's official cook for the biennial Newport to Bermuda race.
Ondine was built in 1967 for one of the most revered racers of his time, Sumner “ Huey ” Long. She was an all-aluminum Abeking & Rasmussen go-fast that was built to win offshore races against the world’s best.
In French folklore, Ondine was a water goddess and nymph of legendary beauty who, betrayed by her unfaithful husband, Palemon , placed a curse on him, allowing him to breathe only so long as he was awake. He never slept again.
Mr Sumner Long
Creating a succession of hi-tech racing sailboats named " Ondine ", and spanning the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s, Mr. Long won every major ocean race in the world, including the Transatlantic Race on four occasions (a record), the Bermuda Race (establishing a course record), the Sydney-Hobart Race (establishing a course record), the Fastnet Race, and the Buenos Aires-Rio Race (also establishing a course record).
We can see a glimpse of Ondine in 1962 in the quick video below:
Ondine II was the first all-aluminum ocean racer ever built. A 57-foot yawl designed by Bill Tripp, she went on to win races against much larger opponents, sometimes due to clever innovations by Mr. Long.
One of these, an ultra-heavy spinnaker, almost caused a mutiny when in a 50-knot Atlantic gale, Mr. Long fought with his crew to get it raised, earning him the title of “a modern day Captain Bligh” by Sports Illustrated.
A subsequent yacht, Ondine VII was designed, somewhat ironically, by a first cousin of Ernesto Che Guevara named German Frers , a renowned designer from Brazil. That yacht won the first Maxi Yacht World Championship in 1985, held at Newport, Rhode Island. In that event, Ondine VII was victorious in the first on-the-water protest hearing ever held, a practice that is now standard in world-class match racing events.
Mr. Long helped boost the careers of many aspiring world-class skippers who crewed for him, including Ted Turner , who went on to win the America’s Cup in 1977 aboard “Courageous” , Bill Koch, the brother of David and Charles Koch, who won the Cup in 1992, and Mr. Long’s son Russell, who, under his father’s guidance, introduced corporate sponsorship to Cup competition and became the youngest American skipper in Cup history.
Long, the son of Lithuanian immigrants, was raised in Boston, where his family started a jewelry business.
Mr. Long, who also had a reputation as something of a bon vivant, would often entertain celebrity guests on his yachts, some of whom crewed for him in major ocean races.
These included HRH King Harald of Norway (who was addressed by the crew as “Harry the Hat” for the wide brims he wore to protect his pale skin), HRH King Olav of Norway, HRH Prince Albert II of Monaco , HRH King Juan Carlos of Spain, the Aga Khan, Teddy Kennedy Sr. and Jr. , and beauty queens such as Miss Australia and Miss Sweden.
Mr. Long’s last boat, a 105-footer named Ondine VIII , built in 1988, was considered at the time one of the world’s most elegant sailing yachts, was co-owned with Charles Evans, founder of Evans-Piccone and the producer of Academy Award winning film, Tootsie .
One more thing…
La Grenouille in New York
In 1970, Charles Masson Sr. — the proprietor of New York restaurant La Grenouille — was the official cook aboard Ondine for the biennial Newport to Bermuda race.
The restaurant was founded in 1962 by Charles Masson, Sr. and his wife Gisèle. After the passing of Charles Sr. in 1975, Gisele continued to manage the restaurant until 2010. Charles Jr. assisted Gisele with her management duties from 1975 until 1994, when Charles Jr. left the restaurant. La Grenouille is currently operated by Philippe Masson, and has been since 2014.
La Grenouille is the last operating New York French haute cuisine restaurant from the 1960s, having outlasted other well-known French restaurants like Lutèce , which closed in 2004.

By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.
If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.
These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.
- Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.
Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker. By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.
- Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
- Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.
Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.
- Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
- Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
- Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.
You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In
FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.
Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.
Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.
Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila
Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.
Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales
The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.
Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas
Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.
Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro
Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.
Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan
Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.
Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo
Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.
Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu
The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO
Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte
The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.
There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
