United States Sail Grand Prix: How to watch, stream, time, channel for SailGP's first ever race in Chicago
Sailgp will hit navy pier as 10 national teams are set to compete in a high-speed race on lake michigan.
This weekend's race may be the second of SailGP's third season, but a pair of firsts make it a must-see affair. The T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago is SailGP's first ever race in Chicago, and it's also the championship's first race to take place on fresh water.
Beginning at Navy Pier, 10 national teams in F-50 catamarans will race through Lake Michigan in a thrilling high-speed competition from June 18-19. The participating teams are Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S.
Anna Weis, who sailed for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is LSO slated to compete in this weekend's SailGP race, told CBS that fans should expect significantly more intense sailing than what they may see at home. The carbon fiber boats can travel up to 60 mph, so she isn't exaggerating.
"This is definitely some full-on sailing and not your leisurely everyday, go out and have fun, it is extremely fun, but there's a lot on and there's a lot of technicalities and teamwork that is required to make the boat go fast," Weis said.
Here's the full TV schedule for the T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago. The race can also be streamed on fuboTV (get access now) .

Live updates: New Zealand Sail Grand Prix at Lyttelton, Christchurch
Newshub's Mitch Redman gets a guided tour of NZ SailGP boat Amokura. Credits: Image - Photosport, video - AM
4:43pm - And that's the end of the day's racing, before it even begins. The racing window has closed and Mother Nature has carried the honours.
Surely tomorrow, we'll be better prepared... such a shame for the record paying crowd, who go home without seeing any racing.
Join us again at 3pm Sunday for live updates of the revised racing scheduled.
4:33pm - Still no racing, due to "mammals on course", which is a little embarrassing. The same thing happened last year and dolphins are quite common in this area, so it wouldn't have takent much foresight to make sure they had something to do somewhere else today.
The opening race has been delayed, after a dolphin was sighted on the course. SailGP is known for its respect for the ocean and nature, so wellbeing of wildlife comes before racing.
2:57pm - Great Britain have been docked points - both from the NZ regatta and the season standings - after a training incident with Spain.
The Brits collided with the Spanish boat during the third practice race on Friday and the penalty may have ended their chances of reaching the series final at San Francisco.
"We’re licking wounds from that issue," said GBR driver Giles Scott. "It's really, really frustrating, but tomorrow's a new day - we'll come out swinging and see what the weekend's got."
The British now sit seventh overall, 11 points out of the top-three cutoff for the final.
Kia ora, good afternoon and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of NZ Sail Grand Prix at Christchurch's picturesque Lyttelton Harbour.
Last year saw the international sailing circuit visit the South Island for the first time and many of the participants described the stopover as the best of the year.
This event was scheduled for Auckland, but unavailability of suitable venues forced organisers to return to Lyttelton, which isn't a bad back-up option.
More from Newshub
The home team were pipped by Kiwi skipper Phil Robertson and his Canadian crew in 2023, but the newly branded 'Black Foils' are determined to take honours this weekend, after back-to-back success at Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Driver Peter Burling wans't at the wheel for the last regatta at Sydney, while he was on babywatch, so he'll chase a hattrick of victories at Christchurch.
Saturday's racing will consist of three fleet races, while Sunday will see two more, plus the three-boat final.
The fleet and championship standings are:
Australia - Tom Slingsby
New Zealand - Peter Burling
Denmark - Nicholai Sehested
Spain - Diego Botin
France - Quentin Delapierre
Great Britain - Giles Scott
United States - Taylor Canfield
Canada - Phil Robertson
Germany - Erik Heil
Switzerland - Nathan Outteridge
Join us at 3pm for the first race.
TAB Odds: Australia $2.90, New Zealand $3.25, Denmark $8, France $11, Spain $11
Canada's Kiwi skipper out to spoil homecoming party again at SailGP Christchurch
The black boat isn't the only one chasing a 'home' win at the New Zealand round of SailGP this weekend.
Last year, Kiwi Phil Robertson stole the show, when he drove his Canadian team to victory on Lyttelton Harbour.
Robertson is back in the country for the first time since the famous win and his sights set on a repeat effort this weekend, but defending his title isn't the only reason to come home.
"It's pretty hard to compete with New Zealand coffee around the world," Robertson told Newshub.
As it turns out, that rule applies to most beverages - including the alcoholic variety.
"I definitely like the local craft breweries and get into it... but I still love a Speights," he joked.
Come Sunday, he'll hope those beers will be celebratory. Last year, he helped Canada achieve their only event win to date, spoiling the party for local hero Peter Burling and the NZ boat.
"That was up there," he reflected. "That was massive."
Not everything about being home is bright and sunny.
"It's cold here, but the colder air brings a denser air, so you go faster," he noted.
The ever-comical Robertson has his own way of describing windy conditions at the last event in Sydney.
"You've got to bring your brown undies and buckle up, because it's going to be a wild ride," he said.
Robertson confirms those brown undies have been included in his luggage this weekend.
"I packed my brown undies, but hopefully I won't need them, because I love the speed."
That should be music to the ears of a record 22,0000 spectators who will make this weekend the world's largest ever ticketed sailing event.
"An event like this here in Christchurch, I'm really hoping it inspires the local kids down here to get into it, because it's a wicked sport and there's so many opportunities around the world," he said.
If Robertson can go back-to-back for Canada, there would be no better example set.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Thunder on Cocoa Beach offshore powerboat races will return for its 15th year on Florida’s Space Coast, scheduled from May 16 to May 19 and includes four days and nights of parties and lots of racing action.
The Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix is one of the most popular attractions for the whole family in Central Florida and draws the top race teams in the World to compete in various classes with Class 1 reaching speeds over 175 mph.
In addition to soaking up the vibe of a Powerboat P1 race filled with excitement, action and speed, spectators can also take in the atmosphere of the East Coast’s surfing capital.
Due to its warm weather, steady waves and world-class surf shops, Cocoa Beach welcomes around 2.5 million visitors each year , making it a top tourist destination. Once the racing is over, The Cover will be a popular destination, with Fish Lips Waterfront Bar & Grill on everyone’s list.
Class 1 is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world and is considered to be one of the most spectacular marine motorsports.
A Class 1 race boat has twin inboard 1100 horse power engines. Each boat has a two-man crew: the driver and throttleman. They work closely with their pit crews to decide the race set-up: the type of propeller required for the conditions, gear ration settings, the amount of fuel needed and race tactics.

All-New VIP Experience
A great race day experience is available for the biggest race fans as 2024 will usher in an all-new VIP experience for Thunder on Cocoa Beach fans.
Thunder on Cocoa Beach race officials said this year it’s all about where to be on Saturday and Sunday for race days.
“We have completely upgraded our VIP experience to offer a better experience and to enhance how and where you watch the race. You have more options for seating, dining and drinking for two fantastic days of racing – we’ve even included an option to pre-pay for VIP parking at Lori Wilson Park.”
For 2024, the only location for beach chalets is at the start/finish line located at Lori Wilson Park; there will not be chalets on the turns. For viewing options this year, you can choose from a VIP chalet ticket, a two-person lounger with umbrella ticket or amp up your weekend in one of our private cabanas.
VIP CHALET: The Thunder on Cocoa Beach VIP Chalet is getting a makeover. It will feature a dining area and cozy VIP lounge spaces. Sit and watch the race on LIVE TV in total comfort under our large, shaded tent and enjoy a complimentary buffet and two drink tickets. A cash bar will also be available.
TWO-PERSON LOUNGER WITH UMBRELLA: The two-person lounger chair set up with umbrella gives you a dedicated spot to watch the race without having to lug your own chairs and umbrellas. Coca-Cola 600 caps busy NASCAR weekend at Charlotte: A look at the NASCAR schedule this week
Fittingly, on auto racing's biggest weekend, NASCAR is bringing all four of its major touring series to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
It will all culminate with the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, but prior comes two busy days full of ARCA Menards, Craftsman Truck and Xfinity Series practices, qualifying sessions and races.
The Cup Series is entering the second half of its regular season after an eventful All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Sunday night. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. punched Kyle Busch in a postrace altercation and we will see this weekend whether or not those ill tempers carry over. Stenhouse was fined $75,000 and two of his pit crew members were suspended on Wednesday morning.
Currently, eight drivers are locked into the postseason via wins with the final eight spots to be sorted out over the next 13 events.
Here's the schedule for this week in Charlotte with television broadcast assignments:

2023 New Zealand Sail Grand Prix dates and race course confirmed
- ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix
- New Zealand
SailGP has today confirmed the highly-anticipated New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch will take place on March 18-19, 2023.
The spectacular setting of Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour will play host to the adrenaline-filled racing, marking Christchurch as one of at least nine iconic global destinations to celebrate the international event in the expanded calendar for Season 3.
The 2023 New Zealand Sail Grand Prix is the first event in a four year commitment to Aotearoa with support from the Government through the Major Events Fund, ChristchurchNZ and Auckland Unlimited. Through the partnership – spanning Season 3 to Season 6 – Christchurch and Auckland will share hosting duties of SailGP, claiming a permanent fixture on the SailGP season calendar and the first home event for Peter Burling and Blair Tuke’s New Zealand SailGP Team.
New Zealand SailGP Team co-CEO Blair Tuke said: “Entering Season 3 of SailGP and our second year in the league knowing we’ll be racing on home waters in March adds an extra element of excitement and determination. New Zealanders have always been keen sailors and supporters, and we can’t wait to have that Kiwi energy and hype right there on the water's edge.”
The race course for the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix has also been confirmed, with fans getting closer to the action in New Zealand than they ever have before.
Ten identical hydro-foiling catamarans are expected to reach speeds of almost 100 km/h as they fly within metres of the shoreline by Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa, coming into the finish in front of thousands of fans.
SailGP Commercial Director and Head of Event Karl Budge said: “It’s fantastic to be working with ChristchurchNZ to bring this vision to life. Together we’re committed to re-imagining how Kiwis are entertained by sailing over the next four years. With what we have planned, I am sure this will become the summer event in New Zealand.
“Heading into its third season, SailGP is going from strength to strength commercially and is recognised as the fastest growing sports league in the world - it is action-packed, boat-to-boat racing just metres off the shoreline edge. With 10 boats on a very tight course, it really is dramatic, as we have seen with other events this season with capsizes, crashes and daring passing manoeuvres.
“SailGP is expected to generate many positive benefits for the New Zealand economy and environment. The experience will help stimulate and promote regional tourism, showcasing Christchurch in a unique way to a global audience and supporting a number of positive environmental projects.”
After the inaugural event scheduled for January 2022 in Christchurch was forced to be cancelled, ChristchurchNZ is excited to host the world-class event in Season 3.
Ali Adams, chief executive of ChristchurchNZ, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have committed to hosting the first New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch in 2023, along with Season 5. The Season 3 and Season 5 events are forecast to provide significant increased benefits for Ōtautahi Christchurch compared to the cancelled 2022 event, with more teams participating, a greater global broadcast audience as the popularity of SailGP has grown, and more visitors due to the lessening of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
“Hosting SailGP will have positive legacy impacts for Christchurch and Lyttelton by boosting the reputation of the harbour as a sailing destination, and the city as a place capable of hosting large-scale international events. These legacy impacts will be boosted by the multi-year commitment SailGP has made to New Zealand through to 2026. We are also excited about the greater and longer-term future opportunities the event will have for the various communities around Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour, including Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke.”
Tickets to the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix will go on sale later this year. To sign up and be the first to access tickets click HERE
