Riverboat Pizza is a hidden gem of California-style goodness

I THINK I've mentioned before that pizza is not something I crave often, especially since overdosing on it in college during late-night study sessions. When I gathered from the Facebook grapevine, though, that a fairly new place I'd never heard of was garnering loads of fans both local and touristy, for amazing pies, I figured I'd ride on out and take a look.

The owner/Chef Jon Lyle, formerly of California, tells me that when he and his wife Cha-Cha, a Thai beauty from Bangkok, bought the place, it was in clear view of Hwy 17/Ogeechee Rd. and advantageously located across the street from the big Walmart.

Then O’Reilly’s Auto Parts decided they like the spot too and built their store right out front, overshadowing the little strip mall behind them. All those tourists out at the end of 204, though, seemed to know just where to go to satisfy their pizza cravings, and were happy to boost business with numerous rah-rah reviews.

It’s a small to middling sized eatery and sports a lovely patio outside, brick-lined, surrounded with tropical palms and aglow with strings of fairy lights in the evening. Each time I go I see at least two tables with family pets snuggled up nearby.

You never know if it’s gonna be crowded with tourists toasting each other with foamy mugs of artisan beer, or local folks squished into a comfy red booth with kids in tow.

Jon’s got a decade or so of experience in the foodie biz. Not only working in California’s cornucopia of fresh vegetable markets, and learning the trade from popular local pizza joints, he’s even put in a stint at The Cheesecake Factory. All this comes together very well in his menu choices: every sauce and dip house-made; crusts with the right balance of chewy n’ tender; impeccably fresh vegetables—they grow their herbs & vegies out back—as well as good wings and, oh, yes, that cheesecake !

If you are a devotee of this rich dessert I’d suggest you call ahead to reserve yourself a piece before the dinnertime rush, because it goes fast! Jon’s inventive with each permutation and every flavor has its ardent fans.

The Snickers Bar, gooey with caramel, swirled chocolate and chunks of candy bar, and the Maple Cheesecake, topped with crumbled, house-made bacon, are regularly sought by treasure-lovers.

Sha-Sha’s sister, Annie, owns the local P.J. Thai Cuisine downtown. The ‘Bangkok Nights’ pizza here, as well as the ‘Peanut Butter n’ Jelly Wings, use her smooth, traditional Thai peanut sauce.

Though PB&J wings have gotten immensely popular up north in the last year or so, when Jon introduced them, he wasn’t sure how they’d go over with the Savannah crowd. He need not have worried. Dipped in his specially made Sweet Jalapeño Jelly, they are deliciously memorable and not at all sweet as what’d you’d expect.

I had a hard time choosing which pizza varieties to try because the menu definitely goes a coupla levels higher than most retail joints. Take my advice and get a half n’ half—you don’t wanna regret missing out on anything!

Ingredients have a most decidedly Californian flair: artichokes, fresh-made pesto, intensely flavored sun-dried tomatoes, and spicy bacon aioli to name a few.

My fave, that hits the palate with an immediate hearty rush of flavor, is the Pesto Manifesto: a pesto base, house-made bacon, chicken, sliced mushrooms, artichoke and green onion.

Many manly men step up for the piled high Meatball Madness sub—I saw one dad repeatedly fend off advances from his curly-haired toddler, with admirable patience I might add—and the Cranberry Walnut Spinach Salad seems to draw tables full of moms with its fresh flavor and crunch.

A run-away hit with diners who check online review sites is the Lowcountry Gravy Fries—even the most plain-spoken among them will struggle to express their delight over this decadent delight.

The bar is really just a small counter—most folks drink at the tables—but you’ll wanna check out the beer listings here. Jon became entranced with IPA and craft beers during his time in California and strives to have at least 50 varieties on hand: “Beer is a passion of mine!” he will tell you.

Among the favored brews you’ll find fruity faves like Illusive Traveler Grapefruit Ale, Hell or High Water Watermelon Wheat Beer and even Abita Rootbeer.

Shocktop, Southbound and Sam Adams Rebel IPA are all on the list, and, due to a fortunate discovery during a Maui vacation last year, Jon is introducing Kona Fire Rock to happy locals—what better beverage to imbibe with your Kahanamoku’s Hawaiian’ pizza?

The food is great ! I enjoyed it . Great prices as well They were out of supplies, ran out of tea & served me unsweetened tea . Not sure of what happened but it’s good to keep in mind of supplies during the busiest... days . We visited on a Friday. One of the employees son was there . He was cute and friendly ! My only complaint is him being under the weather in a food establishment walking around coughing while customers are eating . Please review health regulations concerning things like that ! But overall it’s great 💗🤞🏾 More

We had a pepperoni, ham and salami 14" pizza. The pizza was thin crust and we found the meat very salty. The pizza size was plenty for the 2 of us. I also had a Hard Rock cider and it was excellent. The meal was... reasonably priced. It was about $30 for the pizza, a beer and the cider. The waiter was excellent! More

WOW! This is a great place to go. The husband/wife combo operate the place and they are super friendly and very attentive. We went twice while we were in the area. We tried 4 different pizza's off the very creative menu. All were Excellent. Just... the right amount of sauce (the creamy garlic sauce is very nice), crispy yet chewy thin crust and tasty topping combos! The second time we went back for the wings. "WINGLICIOUS!" They were big and well done like I ordered. They were extra saucy with a nice buffalo seasoning. And to top it all off, they have Kentucky Bourbon Ale on tap! Great place, highly recommended! More

Fun family-owned pizza joint. Creative delicious specials or create your own. We had the California Dreaming and River Monster pizzas. Our family of 5 with 3 teens could only eat half of our 2 larges. But, we saved room for cheesecake. We had a slice... of each. Who knew lavender cheesecake would be SO good?!? Tasted like something that should be served at a fine tea house, not a local pizza shop. Kiddos to the chef! The young man who waited on us was the best waiter we've had at any restaurant in a long long time. Highly recommend! More

Absolutely the best pizza in the area. Always worth the drive. We always order the personal (10”) Riverboat Originals. She has the Riverboat Margherita and i love the Riverboat Supreme. Top it off with a cheesecake if they are making them. You can’t go wrong.... We will be back again More

Terrific pizza! We were craving pizza on our trip to Savannah and this place did not disappoint. It’s off the beaten path and feels more of a local spot which we loved. The pizza was memorable & so delicious. I’ve never had a pizza with... sliced smoked sausage on it before but it was scrumptious More

The pizza is good. It’s annoying however that they do not have menus. My phone had a terrible connection and I could not hardly look at what is on the menu. I asked the server for menu but they do not have them. It was... taking five minutes for me to click in to see what each pizza had on it. It’s very frustrating especially when you just want a nice quiet dining option. The price of doing business is to have a menu. Please consider menus. Not everyone uses a phone and it’s poor customer service to not have a menu available. I would not recommend eating here honestly. It’s not enjoyable experience to have to use your phone as a menu. Thanks to Trip Advisor, we found this phenomenal pizza place! Best we have ever had! Got the Riverboat Supreme, 14" - pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, onion, black olives - crust tasted awesome and was crunchy just like we like. Tomato sauce was light &... flavorful! Heaven! If we lived close by, we would probably come here at least once a week. More

We have been here about 3 times in the past 4 months and usually we have a good experience. However last night our experience was terrible. This is a reflection of the cooks, not our server. Our server has been our server in the past... and we don’t really have an issue with him, his tip reflects him (we still have 15%) But if we would have tipped him based off the food, he wouldn’t have gotten one. We are so disappointed with the quality of food we received. We ordered a simple cheese and pepperoni pizza, and our pizza was SO burnt it literally was hard as a rock. The crust on the entire thing tasted like biting into croutons. I would like to say that although your server was alright, our food was very dissatisfying. We were not asked how our food was at any point during our meal. We also felt like our pizza was left in the oven too long on accident and instead of offering to serve us a better pizza, we were just given what was made. Even if we had been asked how our meal was and if we wanted a new pizza, we would have been waiting a long time as our server was already getting busy with more customers and he had no help on the floor. If I’m able to attach a picture of our food, I will post that below. I hope this review isn’t to upset the business, but a reflection of our service and quality. Full disclosure: I'm a pizza snob. Love pizza. Real pizza. And Riverboat delivered. My family and I are new to the area and have tried a few places looking for our " pizza place" and till now have been disappointed. Have only had a small... sampling as we have only been once but the pizza was outstanding, the wings cooked right and the cheese sticks were very good. This will be our pizza place from now on. More

This is a small pizza place with about 5 booths and 5 tables inside. they have a lot of outdoor seating. Food was made fresh and was good quality. Average wait for fresh made pizza. Prices are average. Located in an off street location behind... several fast food places. First time i have eaten there in the 7 years we have lived in the area. i would return. More

I did a to-go order and they were amazing with service. The food was great and they have great salads. Super fun experience and the server was interested with where we were traveling from. Very open and welcoming atmosphere. We will be back!

Took my wife and two young girls for the first time. Pizza is very tasty w' a good crunchy crust. Service is very good and pizza arrived hot. It's hard to rate good pizza very good or excellent, it could be either but if you're... in one of those "pizza moods," you won't be disappointed with this place. My only negative is the $2.50 drinks, all one size. Refills might be free but the glasses are tall and our 10 and 12 years old girls barely drank a fourth of theirs. But then, if you eat a lot of pizza, I guess you need a lot to wash it down. I drank all my lemonade! More

My husband and I searched for a good place to have pizza one night while on vacation...and found it! Riverboat Pizza is a nice little place kind of tucked away and a little hard to fine but very much worth seeking out. We had a... great pizza. The staff was also very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend. More

Been around a long tine...has to be good. Go to the Moscow location, eat in and browse the mining tool and picture collection. All their food is from scratch and its all v good.

Pepperoni pizza cost 20 dollars. Ridiculous. Even worse is that they don't even make there own dough. They buy prepaid shells. Don't waste your time. Instead go to either Kay's or Mendocinos.

FERRIS makes the best hot wing pizza around!!!! They also have a potato pizza around Lent and it is very filling!

Best pizza in town..love their garden hoagie and great soups in the winter..They have a thin crust pizza that's great but my favorite is the italian white.

The pizza is great it's square and you can order a whole tray or just 6 slices. Also during Lent they have Awesome potato pizza
