IN DEPTH: The Omega Seamaster Yachting – A Luxurious & Rare Regatta Chronograph from the 1970’s

Omega Seamaster Yachting ref.176.010

Behind its visual appeal, its design and all those little things that jump out from its specifications sheet perhaps a wristwatch’s essence is that it is a highly personal item which also can be used to measure time. Timing events can be for something as simple as making al dente pasta, or more complicated like sport events, aerial manoeuvres, diving time, military actions (artillery arm was the first exponent of watches/chronos usage), the start up of jet engines and so forth. So from critical events to simpler tasks, the watch was and still is a fundamental companion.

The chronograph we are going to have a look at today belongs to a family of very specific timepieces: watches that are designed specifically for Yachting races. Yacht timers – also referred to as regatta timers, or yachting chronographs, – are watches specially designed and made for the countdown to the start of a sailing race. The Omega Yachting (ref 176.010) was the company’s proposal in a market being flooded with dedicated regatta chronos.

Before we go on to the watch we must shed a light to this specific naval race. What is a Regatta? A regatta is a term that means “a series of boat races.” The word dates back to the 17th Century and originates from Italy; in the Italian/Venetian dialect it literally means a fight or contest. At the end of all the races, whatever finishes that each boat received (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) are added together, similar to a Golf tournament for example. The competitor with the lowest total points wins the event. It’s taken for granted often, but many do not know exactly how a sailboat race works. It’s actually not much different from a runner’s track race. There are however, a few major differences that make a sailboat race work very differently than a track race. First, sailboats don’t have any type of brakes, so while there is a start line that each boat must cross, they cannot all line up and simply wait around for a gun to start the race. Instead, there is a five-minute countdown where the boats will sail around, and come up with a general game plan of where along the start line they want to be when the gun goes off. As time elapses down to under a minute, each sailboat starts to approach the line in hopes of being as close as possible to, but not over it, when the starting gun goes off. The second difference is how each boat goes around the course. Because a sailboat cannot go directly into the wind, they need to “tack” back and forth upwind to the first mark. After that, they will head to the next mark of the course until eventually they have rounded all the marks completing a lap of the racecourse. The combination of a good start, strong race course tactics, and simply making the boat move as fast as possible will get a competitor to the front of the fleet, winning the race. So, with this information we understand how time measurement is a serious parameter that guarantees the successful completion of all these intricate manoeuvres, and from that point we can now move to the specific chronograph offered by Omega in the 1970’s

This chronograph from Omega has the reference 176.010 and was introduced in 1973. This model was named the Yachting and was classified as part of the Seamaster family of watches. Its inner ring permits its usage for regatta races, so Omega targeted a specific segment of the chronograph market with the introduction of this model. Sailing is a hobby/sport (or for some people, a way of life) that has always charmed watch companies. Chronographs like the Heuer Autavia Skipper, the Regate/Regatta (sold under three different brand names – Aquastar, Heuer, and Tissot), Heuer’s Yacht Timer, the Breitling Co-Pilot and SuperOcean (both in regatta timing trim), Lemania’s self-branded Regatta Yacht Timer,   Yema Yachtingraf ,  and Wakmann were the direct competitors of the Omega Yachting. Skippers could use all these specialized watches for timing events during a regatta race.

Despite the plentiful competition, Omega followed a more luxurious route than from its mainstream competitors, Heuer and Breitling. If we look closely at the watch and compare it with its rivals, we can appreciate how.

  • Firstly, It has an immaculate blue iridescent dial which creates a much more luxurious feel. Add to this the applied markers and the applied Omega logo.
  • Secondly, its case: the case is unique for this model and its construction helps elevate the character of the watch with its continuous alternation of sunray-brushed and polished finishes. It is quite chunky and measures 43mm in diameter. When we consider the case and the dial together, we understand that the purpose of Omega was not just to create a tool wristwatch but a luxurious item that reflected the decade of its design and the lifestyle of the yacht-racers. This duality was the obvious difference from other offerings in the market.
  • Thirdly, another distinguishing feature was the calibre used in this watch: calibre 1040. This actually a movement designed and build by Lemania, and originally introduced in 1972 as Lemania calibre 1340. It runs at 28,800bph, with 22 jewels, and has a 44-hour power reserve. Both have a bidirectional winding system and KIF shock protection. There are some differences however. The Omega movement is rhodium-plated, while the Lemania movement features a grey finish. The main difference however is that the Omega has a 24-hours indicator, placed at 9 in the second sub dial. The Lemania calibre 1340 lacks this 24h indication.
Did you know… Did you know that in 1973 Omega launched the first COSC chronograph calibre? Well they did with calibre 1041, which is a variation on calibre 1040. It was first used in the legendary Speedmaster 125 (ref 378.0801) that was made for the 125th anniversary of Omega. Highly collectible these days, as it was limited to 2000 pieces, making of it the first officially certified chronograph chronometer in the world.

The Yachting is today one of the rarest vintage chronographs of Omega, and an important link in a very long chain of sports watches focused on sailing. Take for instance the Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronograph (NZL-32) that Omega introduced in 2007, or more recent, in 2013, the Omega ETNZ Seamaster Diver Special Edition .

People in the yachting community, skippers and owners alike, who wanted a luxurious chronograph that could be used for measuring regatta races and other naval activities, now had a suitable option. It’s chunky, has quite a bit of a “bling-factor” and is quite complicated in its design aesthetics. Its purpose is to be an imposing item, which of course can measure time. Utilitarian is an adjective notably absent when we describe the yachting, an eye-catching and certainly a very beautiful Omega chronograph from the 1970’s.

For those who were looking for a slightly more affordable alternative, Tissot offered the Navigator Yachting ref. 45503. Inside ticks Tissot calibre 2170, which is actually the Lemania calibre 1341. That was Lemania’s value-proposition and was a more affordable variant of calibre 1340. Back in the 1970’s Lemania sold their movement to a large number of companies including Heuer, Sicura, Nivada, Alpina, Sinn, Bucherer, Dugena and Tissot. Both the Tissot and the Omega shared the same hands, pushers, plastic crystal and case, however the main difference was again the absence of a 24-hour indication.

A truly iconic superyacht, O'MEGA anticipates each and every need of those on board

Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2004 and refit to exacting standards in 2011, the 83m/271ft custom motor yacht ‘O’MEGA’ has remained one of the most refined superyachts available for charter.

With an interior and exterior styled by the Italian design house Studio Vafiadis, O’MEGA exudes an effortless sophistication which makes her the perfect choice for a private yacht charter with up to thirty guests.

Exterior Design

With harmonious lines and concave shapes defining the exterior of superyacht O’MEGA, it’s no surprise that she’s instantly recognisable when out on the water. Finished in arctic white, the outdoor living spaces are largely to be found towards the aft deck and on the upper deck. With comfortable furnishings abounding to provide numerous options for enjoying the climate whilst away on charter, there are also plenty of alfresco dining spaces conveniently situated underneath partial shading. Committed to providing a range of possibilities for such large charter parties, Studio Vafiadis have equipped the exterior of O’MEGA with a handful of lounge-like areas which can be easily serviced by the attentive. What’s more, with a retractable swim platform extending off the transom, charterers are also able to easily access the water to enjoy the tenders and toys on offer.

Interior Design

The stunning interior of O’MEGA is largely inspired by classic aesthetics, with a number of elegantly crafted soft furnishings allowing guests to unwind and socialise in the utmost comfort. With fabrics coming from the collections of Rubelli, Lelievre and Scardigli, charterers are sure to feel inspired by their surroundings in both the communal and guest spaces. Indeed, from the spacious main salon through to the dedicated dining room and the VIP salon, there is a sense of sophistication which helps to establish an appropriately luxurious ambience. As something of a counterpoint to such glamour, the home cinema which was integrated during the refit in 2011 is composed of modern fixtures and the latest in visual and audio systems. Getting between such impressive spaces is just as much of an awe-inspiring experience, with intricate marble flooring and engaging pieces lining the corridors. Other standout features which grace the interior of superyacht O’MEGA include fluted pillars, original oil paintings, and some of the most impressive dark mahogany joinery to be found on any superyacht.

Guest Accommodation

As such a highly voluminous vessel with accommodation for up to 30 guests, it should come as no surprise that motor yacht O’MEGA is complete with 14 exceptional staterooms. The most impressive of these suites is no doubt the master cabin situated forward on the upper deck. Offering panoramic views through semicircle windows which face forward, charterers occupying this cabin are able to wake up in only the most appropriate fashion Finished with yellow and white onyx, the bathroom adjacent to the suite forms the perfect complement to such an expertly designed stateroom. The 5 VIP cabins which are also available on O’MEGA are just as well-appointed. The VIP stateroom found on the bridge deck, for example, offers similarly outstanding views, and is only a little smaller than the master. The additional 4 doubles and 5 twins are superbly finished, with entertainment systems and comfortable fixtures populating the spaces.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

As a superyacht committed to entertaining larger charter parties, O’MEGA comes with a range of options for unwinding in style. The crowning achievement is perhaps the upper salon which is complete with a piano bar which is presided over by a resident pianist to allow guests the luxury of combining their cocktails with appropriate background music. The arrangement of furnishings only a short distance away also means that guests can keep themselves gathered together late into the night to enjoy one another’s company to the accompaniment of music of their own choosing. For those looking to catch up with the latest blockbusters, the home cinema is stocked with a generous range of movies to enjoy in a suitably cool area. Of course, for those who prefer their entertainment to take place out on the water, the easy access to the water and diverse collection of water toys and tenders ensures there’s never a dull moment with superyacht O’MEGA.

Special Features

Superyacht O’MEGA is very much defined by her special features, with both communal and private spaces featuring a wealth of amenities and subtle touches to create an exceptional environment to enjoy a private yacht charter vacation in. Particularly, her home cinema, retractable swim platform, and upper salon provide unrivalled settings for relaxing and socialising with your party.

Performance & Range

Superyacht O'MEGA is built with Steel hull and Aluminium superstructure. This custom displacement yacht is equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience. She features ‘at anchor stabilisers’ which work at zero speed to increase onboard comfort at anchor and on rough waters.

When not cruising Emir has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Principle among these are Pro Series Flyboards, experience flying in and out of the water with the latest in high adrenaline watersport. Take to the sea on a Jet Ski offering you power and control on the water. Additionally, there are towable toys offering fun and adventure. If that isn't enough Emir also features waterskis, scuba diving equipment, a seabob, wakeboards, canoes and much more. Emir features three tenders, but leading the pack is a 8.5m/27'11" Fassmer Limo Tender to transport you in style.

Why Charter Emir

The model has been sanded smooth and painted with many coats of paint to achieve a mirror finish. The Omega 46’s hull is painted a bright green with a gold cove stripe, white boot stripe and red bottom paint. The mast, boom and boom vang are painted in silver. The sails are authentically stitched and that extends all the way to the masthead. The model exhibits a wooden deck on the topsides and in the cockpit. The lifelines have metal stanchions. There are also numerous details on the deck such as hatches, winches, metal steering wheel, cabin and companion way. This Omega 46 yacht model measures 30" long from bow to stern. It's a fabulous yacht model that will be a conversation piece for any room or office.

The Omega 46 is one of the most beautiful yachts on the water. Classic looks combined with the most modern techniques. Designed by Ron Holland, build by Omega in Sweden. Newport Beach woman killed at house party in Arizona

Corona Del Mar's Erin Jones (16) during girls' soccer game against Fountain Valley in January 2022.

The death of a 20-year-old Newport Beach woman who was fatally shot in Tucson, Ariz., was being mourned today.

Erin Jones died early Sunday after attending an off-campus house party in Tucson, where she was a sophomore at the University of Arizona.

Jones graduated from Corona Del Mar High School, where she was a standout on the girls’ soccer team.

Jones was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. According to friends, she was waiting for an Uber after leaving the party, CBS 2 reported.

“I am at a loss for words about the tragic loss of life of our class of 2022 graduate, Erin Jones. Erin was a well-known student on the Corona Del Mar campus and the ripple effect of the loss will be felt by many, especially our soccer community, where Erin was an active member,” wrote Corona Del Mar Middle and High School Principal Jake Haley.

The shooting occurred around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, KOLD-TV, the CBS affiliate in Tucson, reported.

Video footage obtained by KOLD captured gunfire sounds erupting as people began running from the party.

“As some of you may already be aware, our Wildcat community suffered a tragic loss early this morning with the off-campus death of sophomore Erin Jones. Our deepest sympathies go out to Erin’s family in California and across the country, her friends, and her classmates in Tucson and Newport Beach, who are absorbing the heartbreaking news today,” University of Arizona President Dr. Robert C. Robbins wrote in an email to the university’s students, faculty and staff members.

“I have spoken with Erin’s family and offered the university’s full support, and we will continue to be there for them.”

Details about the shooting are “extremely limited at this time, and investigators are actively working on what led up to the shooting,” the Tucson Police Department said in a statement issued Sunday afternoon, the Orange County Register reported.

A teenage girl and a man were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at the scene, according to the Tucson Police Department, the Arizona Wildcat, the university’s campus newspaper, reported. Another victim was discovered inside a car at the scene and is expected to survive.

No arrests have been made in Jones’ killing.

Heliflite is the helicopter transportation provider for the Miami Grand Prix

Now that the luxury private helicopter charter service provider HeliFlite has announced its partnership with FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX 2024, some of the world’s wealthiest race fans can now be whisked from several S. Florida locations to trackside in mere minutes.

The partnership is specifically designed to provide VIPs with hyper convenient, seamless, and luxurious access to all the race weekend attractions in Miami. And HeliFlite’s fleet of twin-engine, dual-pilot helicopters can provide private charters to and from the Watson Island Seaplane Base on the Miami causeway, Miami International Airport, Opa Locka Executive Airport, Palm Beach International Airport or Ft. Lauderdale.

"This collaboration signifies our commitment to elevating the race experience for our guests,” says President of the FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX, Tyler Epp. “Offering seamless journeys to and from the event, we’re delighted HeliFlite will provide unparalleled convenience and luxury as we redefine the standards of excellence in motorsport hospitality."

And if that’s not enough, the yachting experts at IYC have partnered with Heliflite to help make Miami race weekend even more special. "A Grand Prix weekend can truly become an unforgettable experience from the deck of a luxurious yacht,” says IYC CEO Raphael Sauleau. “We are excited about the possibilities our partnership with Heliflite brings and the opportunities it presents for our clients to create extraordinary experiences, combining the freedom of yachting with the convenience and speed of helicopter transportation to and from the race."

Heliflite makes it possible to fly from your yacht to the Miami Grand Prix in style

IYC charter consultant Katy Carter adds, "A luxury yacht charter enhances the Miami Grand Prix experience as the perfect complement to the festivities. To counteract the adrenaline inducing speed and excitement, post race enjoy basking in the South Florida sunshine, as May weather is some of the area's finest. I recommend a full week onboard with a leisurely cruise to the sand and sun soaked Keys or a swift three-hour journey to the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, offering three to four days of extended relaxation on board. All of this is easily accessed via the Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports."

Your helicopter ride to the Miami Grand Prix awaits

“We aim to provide an easy, seamless, luxurious, and most of all, safe and secure travel experience to our clients who have come to trust us for our reputation in the industry,” said Kurt Carlson, CEO, HeliFlite.

And anyone who has suffered through the notorious Miami F1 traffic can attest, there’s no better way to get to the race than by flying over the traffic...if you can afford it that is.

Man being released by immigration enforcement, Kenmure Street, Glasgow, 2021.

Never mind stop the boats: Sunak is using fear to build a life raft for himself. But the people will stop him

Owen Jones

Asylum seekers are our neighbours, not political pawns for failing politicians. If MPs cannot resist the Rwanda plan, activists will

L aws that are unjust will inevitably be broken. Here is a basic reading of our history, and indeed how numerous rights and freedoms were secured in the first place. Ruled as we are by a desperate man lacking a moral compass, our sinking government has brought forward plans to detain asylum seekers across the UK in preparation for their deportation to Rwanda. After both the European court of human rights and the supreme court declared the government’s scheme unlawful – not least because Paul Kagame’s authoritarian regime could plausibly deport them to the country from which they fled – the government railroaded through legislation, absurdly declaring Rwanda to be safe. Here is the very definition of a law to be disrespected: one drawn up to override the courts and thus the separation of powers, to turn a lie into a legal fact, in support of an unworkable and immoral scheme that imposes pain on the traumatised purely to bolster a prime minister’s imploding administration.

Civil disobedience will take many forms. Asylum seekers will simply avoid reporting to the authorities, disappearing from the system altogether: indeed, the Home Office reports it cannot locate more than six in 10 migrants identified for deportation. But a network of activists across the country is poised to take action. We have lived through a decade of protests , speaking to a growing willingness to take to the streets to defy authority. Social media plays a pivotal role, not least when it comes to migrants’ rights: Anti Raids Network, for example, uses X to promote calls by local groups to mobilise activists to stop deportation raids. One such callout in Solihull yesterday asked for help stopping a deportation van: “There are unmarked enforcement vans in the car park, and we think these people could be at risk of being taken to detention.”

It’s an approach with proven success. Three years ago, hundreds of Glaswegians massed on Kenmure Street and freed two men who had been detained by UK immigration enforcement, chanting, “these are our neighbours, let them go” as they did so. It was in this spirit that the Glaswegian Scottish National party MP Anne McLaughlin drove to Easterhouse, on the city’s edges, yesterday, in response to a callout. “It’s the first of these roundups this time,” she tells me, “and I think it’s really important that people are there from the start, so that the Home Office know that, wherever they go, there’s crowd of people to resist what they’re doing.”

Civil disobedience, Savan Qadir from No Evictions Network, tells me, is about “responding to the circumstances proportionately”. If someone is arbitrarily detained, that is seen as kidnapping – “literally that person doesn’t even know where they’re going” – then nonviolent civil disobedience is used to disrupt it. But activists face no lack of challenges. Resources have been stretched by the sheer number of anti-migrant laws – not least the Illegal Migration Act, passed last year , which blocks people from claiming asylum if they arrive by an irregular route, regardless of the circumstances they have suffered. Laws clamping down on the right to protest have intentionally suffocated the ability to resist. That there are so many political mobilisations is a double-edged sword: the mass demonstrations against Israel’s unfolding genocide in Gaza both take up time for would-be activists, and also bring in new recruits awed by the experience of collective strength.

There’s also the less noisy, but practical work, too. Activists have to balance offering material support for those who are at risk of deportation, often without knowing it, without inadvertently causing panic among those who are not. Some migrant support groups set out stalls outside reporting centres, making sure that anyone who enters is given contact details so they can be offered support.

Many activists report frustrations, too, with mainstream refugee organisations, which have focused on providing services to those menaced by deportration, but which can do little when the law imposes blanket bans on asylum claims and prevents any legal appeals. But above all else, they’re filling a vacuum left by the Labour party. Few believe the latter has any serious plans to repeal Tory crackdowns on migrants and refugees; there is even the possibility of renewed punitive laws.

But there is a possibility for hope. Anti-migrant sentiment was far more pervasive a decade ago, whereas now – even with overall numbers of people arriving on British shores significantly higher – polling suggests immigration is only the fourth most important issue for voters, behind the cost of living crisis, NHS and the economy. Given that the Tories have no solutions to the first three – indeed, all have been worsened by their policies – it is unsurprising that they opt for the fourth, particularly appealing to a hardcore who have defected to Reform. “We know we are being played,” as Eiri Ohtani, director of Right to Remain, puts it. “We know we’re being used to hide the real issues by politicians.”

And this is why the core message Ohtani offers – “we need to normalise solidarity” – has so much potential. That means not simply looking at solidarity as an emergency action, such as stopping a deportation, but treating asylum seekers – and anyone else who is struggling, regardless of their immigration status – as fellow citizens in a local community who need our support. The failure of every flavour of Toryism in the last 14 years to do anything other than drag down living standards and trash the public realm is what leads Rishi Sunak to construct a life raft from the suffering of the most vulnerable. With the opposition missing in action, it falls to an army of activists to repel a Tory attempt to use the often deeply traumatised as electoral fodder. But the state of Britain is too abject, and attitudes towards those arriving here too improved, to save the Tories from impending electoral apocalypse. Never has “the cruelty is the point” been more apt as a phrase, but rarely has it been so doomed to failure as a strategy.
