Cammenga motor yacht Five Angels for sale

The 26 metre canoe stern motor yacht  Five Angels has been listed for sale by Jeroen Van der Vliet at Van der Vliet Quality Yachts.

Built in steel by Dutch yard  Cammenga  to a design by William de Vries Lentsch , she was delivered in 1974 as one of the yard's Pacific Class 85 series of motor yachts and was refitted in 1991. Both the hull and the superstructure are in steel and she has teak decks. She is one of six Pacific 85 models built by the now-defunct Cammenga yard and has proven oceangoing capabilities.

Accommodation is for seven guests in three cabins. These consist of a master suite and two twin cabins, one with a Pullman berth and all cabins have en suite shower facilities. Twin 250hp Cummins engines give her a range of 2,000 nautical miles at her cruising speed of 8.5 knots. The bridge deck has generous relaxation and al fresco dining areas, as does the spacious, shaded aft deck.

Jeroen van der Vliet comments: “She has always be well looked after and is an excellent opportunity to acquire a real gentleman’s yacht with a first class pedigree in this size range that will appeal to the discerning yachtsmen who is looking for a solid, long range classic yacht.”

Lying in France,  Five Angels  is asking €1.2 million.

Humanitarian aid ship completes first food delivery to Gaza by sea

A humanitarian aid ship has completed the first aid delivery by sea to Gaza via a new maritime corridor, unloading 200 tons of food and water to the besieged enclave, the nonprofit World Central Kitchen said Saturday. A second aid ship is preparing to sail from Cyprus, the group said.

“All cargo was offloaded and is being readied for distribution in Gaza,” World Central Kitchen said in a statement.

The second aid ship contained “pallets of canned goods and bulk product — including beans, carrots, canned tuna, chickpeas, canned corn, parboiled rice, flour, oil and salt.” It also included 120 kilograms of fresh dates — commonly eaten to break fasts during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

The maritime mission dubbed “Operation Safeena,” meaning ship in Arabic, was dispatched by World Central Kitchen, a U.S. nonprofit founded by chef José Andrés , and the Spanish search-and-rescue group Open Arms this week. The Israel Defense Forces has previously said that the food aid would be transferred to trucks operated by the nonprofit, which would “distribute them to northern Gaza.”

U.N. officials have warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with the situation particularly dire in the north. On Friday, UNICEF warned that almost 1 in 3 children under age 2 in northern Gaza were suffering from acute malnutrition, up from 15.6 percent in January, based on nutrition screenings it and partners had conducted. At least 27 people, mostly children , have died of malnutrition or dehydration in recent weeks, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Aid deliveries to Gaza have become increasingly precarious, with the number of aid trucks plummeting; humanitarian officials say Israel has limited land entry points and targeted civilian police responsible for protecting the convoys. Countries, including the United States, have taken to air dropping aid — a costly and dangerous procedure — while President Biden has announced plans for the U.S. military to construct a floating pier off Gaza’s coast — something that could take up to 60 days to construct.

World Central Kitchen said that Saturday’s aid was offloaded via a jetty the group built on the coast of Gaza and that the second ship could carry two forklifts and a crane to assist with future maritime deliveries. It said it had no information yet on when the second boat, which will carry 240 tons of food aid, might set sail.

Here’s what else to know

Israel said Friday that it will send a delegation to Qatar to continue negotiations for the release of Hamas-held hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel . The move comes on the heels of the latest cease-fire proposal put forward by Hamas, which Israel has accused of making “unrealistic demands.” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Friday that the Hamas proposal was “in broad brushstrokes, within the bounds of the deal that we’ve been working on now for several months.”

Biden praised a recent speech by Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) that criticized Netanyahu’s government and called for Israel to hold a new election. Biden described it as “a good speech” that “expressed a serious concern shared not only by [Schumer] but by many Americans.” Israeli officials criticized Schumer’s remarks, with Israel’s ambassador to the United States calling it “counterproductive to our common goals.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved plans for a military operation in Rafah, his office said Friday . The statement did not provide additional details about the offensive, which is opposed by several world leaders and humanitarian organizations, who say it could be devastating for the more than 1.4 million Palestinians estimated to be seeking refuge in the city. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in Vienna on Friday that the Biden administration had not seen a plan from Israel detailing how it would protect civilians if the military moves into the densely populated city.

At least 20 people were killed and more than 150 were injured late Thursday while awaiting aid in northern Gaza, in what Palestinian officials in the enclave said was an Israeli attack. Witnesses interviewed by The Washington Post said they saw an Israeli helicopter and drones randomly firing on Palestinians. The Israeli military denied responsibility for the killings and late Friday released edited footage of what it said showed “Palestinian gunmen opening fire in the midst of Gazan civilians.” The accounts from witnesses and the IDF could not be independently corroborated.

More than a dozen authors have dropped out of a PEN America festival, citing the literary nonprofit’s inaction over the war in Gaza . Naomi Klein, Hisham Matar and Maaza Mengiste are among the writers who have said they will not be participating in the annual PEN World Voices Festival this year, criticizing the organization for failing to call “for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire.” The nonprofit has said on its website that it has “done considerable work in response to the war. Some has been public, and some has been behind the scenes to protect the imperiled artists and writers we are assisting.”

At least 31,553 people have been killed and 73,546 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry , which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 249 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

U.S. involvement: U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria killed dozens of Iranian-linked militants , according to Iraqi officials. The strikes were the first round of retaliatory action by the Biden administration for an attack in Jordan that killed three U.S. service members .

Chuck Liddell is finally addressing what led to him going overboard on a Lamborghini yacht last month ... telling TMZ Sports it was a simple whoopsie-daisy moment.

The Iceman turned into Aquaman during a recent trip to San Diego ... falling off the side of the luxurious watercraft in front of all his peers -- requiring some serious assistance to get out of the water.

TEMPE, Ariz. — In the end, the Angels came to a decision that seemed obvious a month ago.

Patrick Sandoval will be their Opening Day starter.

Sandoval, a 27-year-old left-hander who has started 84 games for the Angels over parts of the past five seasons, officially got the nod to start the March 28 opener at Baltimore on Tuesday.

“Really cool,” Sandoval said. “It’s a huge honor, obviously. Something you dream of as a kid growing up, being an Opening Day starter. I get to do it for my hometown team. It’s pretty cool.”

A product of Mission Viejo High, Sandoval was acquired by the Angels in a July 2018 trade with the Houston Astros. He reached the major leagues in 2019.

Sandoval has had control issues at times, and he has seen his pitch count prevent him from getting deep in games. Both were evident during his disappointing 2023, when he had a 4.11 ERA. Over his career, though, he has a 3.83 ERA, including a 3.47 ERA since becoming a full-time starter in May 2021.

“I think when we came into camp, we wanted this to happen this way,” Manager Ron Washington said. “And he took it and made it happen. And he’s supposed to take it and make it happen. Because his peers, the other pitchers that are on the staff with him, thought that he should have been the guy. He stepped up and became the guy.”

Despite Sandoval’s track record coming into the season, there were indications that the Angels might have been leaning toward right-hander Griffin Canning. Canning is scheduled to pitch Saturday, which is exactly five days before the opener. He’s also pitched consistently well throughout the spring. Washington has spoken in glowing terms about Canning being a leader on the staff.

Sandoval, meanwhile, gave up 11 runs in his second and third starts of the spring.

“My second and third starts didn’t really go as planned, but I made some adjustments and I hope showed them enough to have the faith in me to be the Opening Day starter,” Sandoval said.

In his fourth start, on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Sandoval gave up one run in 4⅓ innings, throwing 77 pitches.

“He made it happen,” Washington said. “We didn’t give him anything. He made it happen.”

Washington told Sandoval on Monday morning that he had been picked for the start. Sandoval will pitch once more in Arizona, on Friday, and then he’ll have five days’ rest before the opener.

Although he’s never started on Opening Day, he has some experience in that type of environment. He started the two biggest games for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, facing the United States and Japan. He gave up one run in 7⅓ innings in those two starts.

“It was huge,” Sandoval said of his WBC experience. “It was definitely a way different atmosphere than I’ve been used to pitching in. It was a cool experience. To thrive in that, I know I have it in me. It’s cool to be able to come back and hopefully get us to October and have that same feeling back.”

For now, the challenge will be an Orioles team that won 101 games last season and boasts a lineup with young stars like reigning Rookie of the Year Gunnar Henderson and catcher Adley Rutschman.

“The ballpark is awesome,” Sandoval said. “A great team. A good lineup. They swing the bat well. Don’t chase much. It’s going to be a good challenge.”

It remains to be seen how the Angels will align their rotation behind Sandoval. If they maintain the order they’re using in spring training, Sandoval would be followed by Canning, left-hander Reid Detmers, left-hander Tyler Anderson and right-hander Chase Silseth.

HUNTER’S FUTURE

Torii Hunter was in uniform as a guest instructor with the Angels the past few days, but don’t expect him to be back in baseball full-time anytime soon.

Hunter, 48, last played in 2015, and he said he’s still devoting most of his time to his family and his businesses, which include five barbecue restaurants, two coffee shops and a commercial real estate company.

“I gotta keep baseball on the back-burner for now,” Hunter said. “Full time? Not ready to do that. It could happen someday. We’ll see.”

Hunter was in the news in November, when there was a report that he’d already been selected to be Washington’s first-base coach with the Angels.

“I was at a golf course and some guy said ‘Congratulations,’ and I said ‘For what?’” Hunter recalled. “He said ‘You’re going to be the first base coach.’ And I said ‘Where?’ It was a thing that someone must have started, some kind of rumor.”

Hunter said after that he did talk to the Angels about a coaching position, but they hadn’t before. He said he’d like to do it sometime.

Washington said Hunter would be a natural.

“A tremendous leader because there’s nothing in the game he hasn’t experienced,” Washington said. “If you know Torii, he knows the game. He knows what it takes to be a champion. He knows what it takes to be a star. He knows what it takes. And he does a good job of relaying that to the guys. I’m walking around listening to him talk to the guys, he does a good job of doing that.

“When he can put his personal businesses aside and he has someone that he can trust to really run them, then I think he will come back into the game and he would be a tremendous coach. He would be a tremendous manager once he worked his way through the coaching ranks.”

First baseman Nolan Schanuel was out of the lineup for a second straight day because of back tightness. Schanuel said he was “a lot better” Tuesday, and hoped to be back in the lineup on Wednesday. Washington said it was possible that Schanuel could play Wednesday, but he wasn’t certain. …

Right-hander Ben Joyce walked two more hitters in his inning Monday, giving him nine walks in 7⅓ innings this spring. Washington, however, said he still sees progress since Joyce’s first outing against the San Francisco Giants, when he walked three. “First time out to now, he’s gotten better,” Washington said. “He’s hit the strike zone a little more. And I think as long as he’s here around these pitching guys we have, they seem to have harnessed it a little bit. He’s a young guy, so you never know when he’s going to let his emotions control what he’s supposed to do. But from the first time to right now, I think he’s harnessed his emotions pretty good. That’s what he’s got to keep doing. Because he does have a tremendous arm.” …

Reliever Robert Stephenson (shoulder) said he felt good a day after playing catch at a distance of 90 feet. He said he was still expecting to have multiple days before throwing again, just to be conservative. Stephenson is expected to begin the season on the injured list. …

Almost all of the Angels’ regulars are expected to return to Southern California to prepare for the Freeway Series before the Angels play their final Arizona game, on Saturday against the Oakland A’s. Canning is scheduled to start that game.

Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was unexpectedly at the center of the baseball world on Wednesday when he was fired after he allegedly was involved in a “massive theft” of the Japanese star’s money that was sent to an illegal bookmaker.

According to the Los Angeles Times , Ohtani’s lawyers claim that Mizuhara, 39, used millions of dollars to place bets with bookie Mathew Bowyer, who is based in Orange County, Calif.

ESPN reported that at least $4.5 million was wired to the bookie’s operation.

Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers on Wednesday after they played their regular season opener against the Padres in Seoul, South Korea.

He was seen in the dugout during the win over the Padres, the team said in a statement Wednesday night.

“The Dodgers are aware of media reports and are gathering information. The team can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been terminated. The team has no further comment at this time.”

Mizuhara has long been involved in the baseball world, working as an interpreter for other players before becoming more prominent when he joined Ohtani with the Angels in 2017.

When did Ippei Mizuhara come to the United States ?

Mizuhara, who was born in Tomakomai, Japan, came to the U.S. with his family in 1991 when his father began working in Los Angeles as a chef, according to Japanese reports .

He attended Diamond Bar High School, playing soccer and basketball before attending the University of California Riverside, where he graduated in 2007.

Where did Ippei Mizuhara work before the Dodgers?

After graduating from Riverside, Mizuhara joined the Red Sox as an interpreter for left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima, who pitched for Boston from 2007-11, getting named an American League All-Star in his first season stateside.

In 2013, Mizuhara was hired by the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball to work as an interpreter there, translating Japanese to English for some players, like Red Sox reliever Chris Martin, who played for the Fighters in 2016 and ’17.

“Ippei was a lot of fun, liked to play video games and kept things light, and that’s probably why he’s so successful with Shohei,” Martin recently told the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” show .

What’s Ippei Mizuhara’s connection to Shohei Ohtani?

Ohtani began his professional career at 18 years old, playing with Nippon from 2013-17, right when Mizuhara was there.

The two-way star eventually made his way to the U.S., signing a deal with the Angels before the 2018 season.

As Ohtani moved to California, so did Mizuhara, becoming his interpreter with the Angels.

Mizuhara frequently accompanied Ohtani at other media events, along with his game duties.

Notably, during the 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field in Colorado, Mizuhara served as Ohtani’s catcher.

Ohtani, the top seed in the event, lost in a tight first-round battle to Juan Soto, then a member of the Nationals.

When Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers this offseason, Mizuhara joined him on the National League side.

Thomas Adès Takes a Step Toward the Classical Music Canon

As Adès premieres an orchestral work, “The Exterminating Angel” is receiving something rare in contemporary opera: a new production.

Pity living composers, toiling away in a field that has long favored dead ones. If they get a precious commission, the cycle tends to go something like this: The work premieres, and then travels to any other ensemble or company that helped to pay for it. After that, who knows. The fate of contemporary music typically comes down to marketability — hits still exist! — and to that strange, slippery thing called legacy.

One recent work that is worthy of the canon yet seemed doomed to obscurity is Thomas Adès’s opera “The Exterminating Angel.” It had a prestigious start, premiering at the Salzburg Festival in 2016, then playing at the Metropolitan Opera the next year. But it was immense: written on a grand scale, with more than a dozen principal roles, a chorus and an orchestra equipped with idiosyncratic sounds like that of the spooky, electronic ondes Martenot.

In his book, “The Impossible Art,” the composer Matthew Aucoin recalled hearing an opera administrator say that putting on “The Exterminating Angel” was “like watching money burn.” Regardless of its merits, there didn’t seem to be much hope for this work’s future.

How extraordinary, then, that “The Exterminating Angel” has not only been revived, but has also received something even rarer in opera: a new production, by Calixto Bieito, at the Paris Opera. (It continues through March 23 and is streaming on the company’s platform until Saturday.) And, revised by Adès, with the composer in the pit, it sounds better than ever.

“The Exterminating Angel,” with a libretto by Adès and Tom Cairns adapted from Luis Buñuel’s surrealist film, is one of the finest operas of the century so far, alongside works by George Benjamin and Kaija Saariaho . It represents opera at its most fundamental, an elevated expression of humanity on the edge. There is sex, violence and desperation. While the meaning can’t easily be explained, crucially for opera, the plot can be described in a single sentence: People enter a room, then lose the will to leave it.

Many have read into Buñuel’s story an allegory of bourgeois apathy in Franco-era Spain. Adès’s adaptation, in 2024, can feel like a mirror of climate change, a stranger-than-fiction repeat of the 2020 election or an unnerving reminder of pandemic’s quarantine days. But Bieito’s production, while vivid, evokes nothing with specificity, and even abstracts elements that were more literal in the original staging, directed by Cairns. Gone are the lambs and the bear; in their place, balloons and a stuffed animal.

Bieito sets the entire opera — now streamlined into two uninterrupted, entrapping hours — in a banquet room that is white on every surface, a blank canvas for the horrors to come once the dinner guests find themselves unable to exit. With nowhere to hide, they are out in the open, no matter how private and, um, digestive their actions.

As a scenic concept, it falls short in the third act’s chorus scene, which is meant to take place outside the house. Bieito keeps the singers offstage, and it’s unclear whether we are hearing them through the walls or just in the suspended-disbelief space of opera. But that is a quibble in an otherwise persuasive production that, in its madcap energy, “Yellowjackets”-esque descent into barbarism and visual gags, leans into the comedic spirit of Buñuel’s film, unlike Cairns’s grim staging.

Between the score’s breathlessness and Bieito’s athletic demands, the cast is uniformly fearless: One soils himself, another mimes sex with the stuffed bear, and many of them strip. There are too many soloists to name, though particularly memorable were Nicky Spence, with a nerve-racking mix of bullish heft and wide-eyed energy; Gloria Tronel, effortless in some of the highest notes ever written for a soprano; and Jacquelyn Stucker as a manic host.

The highlight remains Adès’s score, which freely flows from grotesquerie to lyricism to militaristic might and more. His diegetic sound nods to without embodying older styles, and his interludes behave as through they were trying to stare down both hell and the cosmos.

In its original version, Adès’s music was almost too much, overwhelming in its presence and exhausting to hear. But for Paris, he has maintained the score’s shape while shaving off its excesses; it is leaner, more transparent and even more effective. The ondes Martenot, allowed to penetrate the orchestra and singers, lends the opera the character of an old sci-fi horror soundtrack.

Adès has described “The Exterminating Angel” as having an “underground river of meaning,” an apt metaphor considering his other major event of the past week: the premiere of his orchestral work “Aquifer,” at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich.

Composed for Simon Rattle’s inaugural season as the orchestra’s chief conductor and unveiled on Thursday at the Herkulessaal, it seems to pack as much into its 17 minutes as Beethoven did in his “Pastoral” Symphony, which was on the second half of the evening. (The program, which opened with the Prelude and “Liebestod” from Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde,” travels with the ensemble and Rattle to Carnegie Hall on May 3 .)

Here, again, is Adès the maximalist, for better and worse. “Aquifer” may be easy to listen to, but it’s not so easy to quickly understand. (On one page in the score, there are 39 simultaneous lines of music.) There may be a hint, though, at representation and form in the title, similar to his violin concerto “ Concentric Paths .”

“Aquifer” begins foundationally, with the rumbling of voices rising to the highest in the orchestra. From there, it unfolds in seven sections that are delineated not by movement breaks but by tempo; they are as seamless as the three acts of “The Exterminating Angel.” There are episodes of flaring phrases and passages that swing slowly, brassiness that recalls Ravel’s “Boléro” and a falling, two-note motif that subtly, but coincidentally, presaged the birdcalls of the “Pastoral” Symphony.

As the tempo changes, the momentum never lets up, whether foregrounded or subterranean. Compact and intense, “Aquifer” couldn’t be longer than its running time without wearing itself out. After a chromatic chorale that starts in the winds and builds to include the entire orchestra, the piece euphorically sprints to a climactic finish that featured, if you can believe it, Rattle playing a rattle.

That could have been a comic bit to spotlight the conductor for whom “Aquifer” was written. Or it could have been a logistical choice; the score calls for six percussionists, but those final measures include seven percussion instruments. Either way, after the performances in Paris and Munich, it feels safe to trust that, at this point, Adès knows exactly what he’s doing.
