By Brody Patterson

Updated on January 14, 2023

Heesen Yachts Project Altea

The superyacht industry is a world that offers you luxurious adventures around the globe, from the United States, all the way to the UK, Netherlands, Germany, or the beautiful Italian coast. From the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, these stunning yachts are built by highly skilled professionals, who provide you with nothing but the best craftsmanship.

As a potential yacht owner, you can get inspiration from any of these companies and choose what is best suited to your needs. There is so much to take into consideration, hence we compiled a detailed list of the 25 best yacht building companies in the world to help you out.

For example, you need to figure out first what size yacht you want, as they range from 30-50 feet vessels, all the way to the larger than 260 feet superyachts, and everything in between. Are Eco-friendly details important to you, or is cutting-edge technology and speed an absolute must to you?

We will do our best to cover all these points and more, so let’s start looking at the best yacht brands in the world right now.

The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

high end yachts

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

high end yachts

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

high end yachts

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

high end yachts

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

high end yachts

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

high end yachts

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

high end yachts

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

high end yachts

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

high end yachts

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

high end yachts

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

TESTIMONIALS

Captain Vince was an outstanding Captain. He made our family charter together very special. The crew even put on a firework show for us. The weather was outstanding and everything you did for us is very appreciated. We look forward to returning onboard!

Good afternoon, sweet Shannon! You think of everything. Your sweet kindness and thoughtfulness is very much appreciated. This has been the trip of a lifetime. It was beyond magical and the most incredibly amazing experience of my life. From the boat, the crew, the food, being with my family, the beach-set ups, the fun games, to the essential oil towels we were greeted with every time we stepped on the boat, it was truly an experience of a lifetime. So many great memories! I’m still pinching myself. Thank you for everything!!

RAMBLE ON ROSE has been our favorite charter yacht so far. They just keep getting better each year. Diving was amazing and the New Year’s Eve party was so much fun. The kids really enjoyed having their own yacht and traveling alongside us. We spent much of our time in the water diving, exploring, enjoying the water toys and quality family time onboard in the evenings. Thank you for putting together such a wonderful holiday for us.

WOW!!!!! You certainly recommended a fantastic boat. The crew is great. The chef Adrian is the best! Josh, Mike and Paula can’t be better. We are having a wonderful time. Thank you, and thank you again.

The crew was outstanding. We wanted to explore ‘off the beaten path’ and that is exactly what we did! From fly fishing in the Outer Islands to eating a private beach dinner, we never wanted our week to end. Bravo!

1. OCTOPUS – 126.2ft (414ft)

Some yachts are simply iconic and OCTOPUS is surely deserving of this epithet. As a renowned pioneer of global yachting at a luxury level, OCTOPUS is one of the most well-travelled yachts in the world. With a colossal 12,500nm range and diesel-electric propulsion system, she has cruised in Antarctica, travelled the Northwest Passage and played a part in history by recovering the ship’s bell from the WWII wreck of HMS Hood and discovering the remains of WWI battleship IJN Musashi in the Pacific.

Originally delivered by Lürssen in 2003, OCTOPUS has been impeccably maintained, with her latest refit completed in 2019, so she is ready to take a new owner on the adventures of a lifetime. Designed by Espen Øino International with interiors by Jonathan Quinn Barnett, there is accommodation for up to 26 guests in 13 cabins, served by 63 crew. The owner’s deck has its own private bar, jacuzzi and dining area, while there is also a second elevator exclusively for the owner’s use.

Enjoy long, lazy days on the bridge deck aft with its swimming pool, dining area, bar and pizza oven. Or make use of the entertainment deck on longer passages, including the spa, library, bar, cinema, gym, observation area and various cosy lounges. There is even a glass-bottomed underwater observation lounge, and a basketball court for those who enjoy shooting a few hoops.

Of course, such an adventurous superyacht comes kitted out with a superb range of tenders and toys; beyond the submersible with capacity for up to eight guests and two crew, there are seven tenders and an ROV, alongside space for an SUV and two helicopters to be stowed in the protection of the garage.

Lurssen Yacht KISMET Profile

LADY KATHRYN V

high end yachts

Integrity and the relentless pursuit of the deal defines Moran Yacht & Ship - I am grateful that you were on this journey with me. This magical machine KISMET is the second yacht I’ve had built with Moran Yacht & Ship. KISMET has brought joy, hope, and the gift of discovery to many lives - including my own. You have made this world a better place! Owner, KISMET
By way of background, my business interests include controlling stakes in 3 publicly traded companies which operate vessels in the 500 to 5000dwt range. On average, one new vessel a year would be added to the fleet. As a result, I have access to in-house marine architects, engineers and construction supervisors. Consequently, when I decided to build my first large motor yacht, I did not feel I needed the services of a company like Moran Yacht & Ship. In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. In short, I would not consider building another yacht without engaging Moran Yacht & Ship to provide the services they are so good in delivering. Former Owner, NORTHERN STAR

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

high end yachts

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

high end yachts

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

high end yachts

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

high end yachts

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

high end yachts

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

high end yachts

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

high end yachts

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

high end yachts

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Options 1 to 3

So far in this series of chapters we have covered BMS requirements , balancing and monitoring , choosing voltage and peak current (amps) , and fusing , so, in conjunction with other chapters in the Online Book , we have the tech stuff done.

Phew. Just thinking about all the stuff we need to know to install a good lithium system on an offshore boat makes me tired.

Anyway, let’s dig into the actual buy:

  • Should we just pull out the credit card and get others to do the whole job, or do it ourselves?
  • And if DIY, how far should we go with that?

There are nine different configurations to consider , so I have split this into two to keep it manageable.

In this chapter let’s examine the costs of the first three, fully integrated high-end systems, primarily from one manufacturer, so we can be sure everything will communicate and all charging sources can be properly controlled by the battery BMS :

Key points I’d like to emphasize once again here:

  • For battery packs of the size we’re considering here – less than about 10 kWh –the cost of the actual LFP cells is small compared to the total cost of the project. Basing your go / no-go decision on headline pricing for the cells themselves is foolish to the point of absurdity, and compromising on quality or performance to save a few dollars there is a fool’s errand.
  • Lithium systems can be very reliable, safe, and long-lived if engineered correctly . There are a hundred ways to get them wrong. Before you start, you need to either learn all the details of how to do it right, or hire an expert to help.
  • If you are not terribly cost sensitive, there is a lot to be said for the one-stop, one-vendor approach. Remember, all equipment from all vendors works fine on its own in the lab, but what you care about is how it works all together once integrated and installed. If you mix and match, it’s all on you; the vendors will forever blame the installer and each other without ever admitting fault. If you buy the whole suite of gear from one OEM via one distributor, and use an installer trained by that OEM, you have one spot to point the finger if there’s an issue.

John Harries

Good point on the cell cost not being what matters to the overall cost. This is particularly true with Victron’s recent battery price drop. I’m planning to explore that more in the next article.

Mike Evans

is it necessary to replace an engine alternator used for wet cell when converting to lithium ?

Not necessarily, but you will not get the full benefits (and value for money) of your investment in lithium batteries unless you have an alternator capable of exploiting their high charge acceptance rate. There’s a lot more detail on this in the other chapters of this online book.

If it is the stock alternator that came with the engine, yes it will need replacing, as will the alternator regulator.

Steve D

Virtually every new build project I’m currently working on (I’m in Taiwan as I write this inspecting three new builds, all lithium), and have worked on in the past three years, is equipped with LFP batteries, up to 96 feet. I’ve used Lithionics, MG, MV and Victron, and by far the greatest risk, in my view, isn’t the batteries themselves. Rather, it’s the installation/wiring and specifically wiring errors and faults. These are the same wiring faults I’ve been encountering for decades, however, the difference is LFP batteries and charging stresses the electrical system in ways it’s never before been stressed. Therefore, what was a minor fault in the days of AGM, now becomes a potential fire in the LFP world. Here’s are two common examples, one, heat shrink on cable ends impinging on the contact surface, in some cases reducing it by 90%, with consequent overloading of that contact surface and heat generation. Two, ring terminals that are not installed in order of ampacity, i.e., largest to smallest, particularly in high current scenarios. This causes high current to pass through the small ring terminal, which can exceed its ampacity, which in turn causes heating, and expansion, and that cycle causes the connection to loosen, and arc, and you have a potential fire. That will result in heat generation, a lot of it and quickly. Therefore, the onus is on installers more than ever, to practice good, meticulous and ABYC compliant wiring techniques.

Welcome back, good to hear from you again. And yes, I totally agree. In an earlier chapter in this guide I looked at the issues of high current: https://www.morganscloud.com/2024/03/21/lithium-battery-buyers-guide-part-4-fusing/

I also wrote this tip in the same vein: https://www.morganscloud.com/jhhtips/no-lithium-batteries-dont-burn-boats/

And more yet here: https://www.morganscloud.com/2022/03/19/8-checks-to-stop-our-dc-electrical-system-from-burning-our-boat/

All that said, as you point out, poor practice can cause a fire even if all of the above articles are followed to the letter. The devil really is in the details.

Stein Varjord

On hours needed for DIY on any stage of this, I think your hours estimates may be correct for the time it takes to do the actual job, but including the pondering about how to do it, and the buying of the right tools, the postponing due to worrying about what to do, and so on, I think the time estimate can be multiplied with a significant number. I work with this type of stuff and have the tools and much of the knowledge, but mostly others do the hands on. The hands on guys work 4 times as fast as me, at least, when looking at the whole job. Perhaps mainly because they remove the gaps of no productivity between each task.

Spending 4 times, or 20 times as long on getting something finished, means it’s really hard to justify doing it yourself. I sometimes ask people restoring boats how much money they think is the minimum they would accept per hour for the work they’re doing. If say a meagre 10 Euros/Dollars is the answer, the boat value really needs to increase by each hour spent to justify doing it ourselves. 1 000 hours is 10 000 Euros/Dollars we need to get paid in increased boat sales price. Especially high tech work, like the stuff discussed here, is perhaps not possible to justify DIYing, unless we have no other way to spend our time, making more than 10 Euros/Dollars an hour.

Interestingly, Victron Energy, MG Energy and Mastervolt are originally all from the Netherlands. The two first are still based there, but much of the actual production is in other countries, of course. I don’t know the history behind this, but MG seems very much like a smaller brother of Victron, and Victron may could perhaps be made as an improvement of the previously very closed systems of Mastervolt? Just speculations.

I figured about double the time for DIY, but you may easily be right that four times would be closer to the mark if we add in all the research time. I seem to remember I had at least 30 hours in designing the simple lead acid system for our J/109.

George L

Very, very useful information, thanks.

where you are striking a raw nerve: the individual pieces aren’t soooo expensive it by the time you add it all up, the total blows you away … at which point you might as well buy top of the line because doing the hours and small items make the majority of the project. In a way like there is no sense buying cheap tools …

we did quite a few comparisons, and everything Mastervolt sells turned out be quite a bit more expensive, last time we tried. They claimed some superiority in the converter chargers, that I didn’t quite get.

there is also Sterling Power from the UK, who appear to have really good kit and competitively priced.

Am I correct that this is a secondary alternator and you leave the one for the engine alone?

Thanks for the information on Mastervolt.

As to the alternator, I’m not a fan of adding a second alternator but rather recommend replacing the original OEM: https://www.morganscloud.com/2013/11/06/10-tips-to-buy-and-install-a-liveaboards-alternator/

On a small system all with the same voltage, I would agree. With a 24V house system, I’d rather keep it completely separately. But I can see the 24/12 transformer as a really good compromise.

Mark Wilson

Your final number is eerily close to the cost of a newly installed engine. A big ticket item which will probably require a degree of fettling. Something that might make sense to consider on a new build.

This subject is a source of endless interest to us readers but how much it contributes to the gaiety of nations I don’t know. Is the complexity and potential for time wasting setbacks in out of the way places really going to contribute positively to the experience of voyaging ?

To me the great benefit of these kinds of articles is to make one think more deeply than normal about what really matters on a far foreign boat. “Get thee behind me sexy new kit.” Perhaps this kind of innovation is best left to those who do their sailing in the first world – nothing wrong with that.

well, if you take all the plastic in a boat, the difficulty of recycling it and the fact the most boats are unused for 11 months of the year, gaiety of nations isn’t something that would come to mind in this context. any way you try to justify it, it is a luxury item and if things work out, it will help your gaiety and that of your crew but thats it.

furthermore, the cost of a raw engine compared to the overall cost, is, sadly, not very much.

is it needed? theoretically no; just as you can go hiking into the high mountains with 20 kg of kit. If that spartan style makes you, and more importantly, your spouse happy, cool. If you can still do it age-wise, also cool. i did it 20 years ago, I don’t think it would be my way of hiking any more. Hence, if not (that is after a while), then perhaps those 16K are a really good investment.

Or if it means being able to work from your boat.

and in the supposedly first (soon to be fourth world considering the actions of the political personnel) world with a plug in marine at every corner, it is much easier to go with little than in other areas without those comforts. So this kind of innovation is perhaps much more relevant anywhere but the first (soon to be fourth) world.

As an example, I had a long conversation with a fellow who spent last summer in Svalbard and was happily going through just on solar panels and a good installation. Said he didn’t start the gen set a single time and had all the power he needed (with a diesel cooker and a refleks, so less demand).

A very wise comment. While I can see the benefits of a lithium upgrade I would not have bothered if we had kept the McCurdy and Rhodes 56. Just not worth the money and aggravation given that we already had a good lead acid system. Rather I would have just added a couple of solar panels and called it good. Also I can think of many other things I would have spent $20,000 on way ahead of a lithium upgrade and that on a boat already well tricked out.

I am totally happy with the *tiny* lead-acid bank on my current sailboat. I wouldn’t even dream of converting it to lithium.

At the same time, I have a boat on the drawing board (and partly-built in the shop) that may well end up with 5 kW of solar panels and 40 kWh of lithium batteries, and no fuels, on board. (It’s spec’d for 100% solar electric propulsion.)

Horses for courses. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The important thing is that you pick a system that fits your own needs and priorities, and then do a good workmanlike code-compliant implementation of whatever you pick.

your last paragraph is spot on

Word! And I have to mention that John has said similar things on most topics here. Lithium is just another of the innumerable questions of this kind that we have to struggle with. “It depends…”

Nathan Moore

I’ve long held the belief that if you ask a good professional a good question, the answer will invariably be “it depends.” 🙂

I totally agree. “Experts” who are certain about everything make me nervous.

Colin Speedie

Spot on, Matt. There is no perfect solution, but careful installation of whatever system you run is a necessity.

Stotesbury Cup Regatta 2024: What to know ahead of the nation’s largest high school rowing competition

T he annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta , the world’s oldest and largest high school rowing competition, will return to the Schuylkill on Friday and Saturday for its 97th year.

With more than 900 boats entered, the event will begin with time trials on Friday. Semifinals will pick up in the afternoon and end Saturday, with finals starting at noon. The semifinals will determine the six boats that will compete in each final.

Last year, St. Joseph’s Prep took home the overall championship for medals, while Mount St. Joseph Academy took second and Gonzaga College High School of Washington, D.C., third.

Here’s a look at what to know about the event, and if you plan to attend, what to know before you go.

When is the regatta?

It starts at 8 a.m. Friday and again on Saturday, with the last race scheduled to end around 5:20 p.m. The event is free.

How to get there — and is there parking?

The event is held on the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive, with the main attractions by Gillin Boathouse.

Vehicles should park at off-site lots (located on the map) by the racecourse on the East Plateau. The standard parking fee is $20 to $25.

For the senior four and eight boats, the top 18 from the time trials will advance to three semifinals.

For all other events with more than 12 entries, the top 12 advance to two semifinals. For events with more than 29 entries, the top 18 advance to three semifinals.

Each semifinal race usually has six boats in a heat.

If there are two semifinals for a given boat category, the top three boats from each semifinal will compete in the final. If there are three semifinals, the top two from each advance to the final.

Who’s taking part?

More than 100 schools are scheduled to participate in the event. Some of the local schools competing are St. Joseph’s Prep, Germantown Friends, Penn Charter, Germantown Academy, Springside Chestnut Hill, and La Salle College High School.

Several schools from outside the state will compete, including Woodson High School and Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County, Va., two of the major preparatory rowing programs in the country.

Where to live-stream

Both days of the regatta will be live-streamed via YouTube through the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia. Additionally, race results will be posted on the rowtown.org website.

More than 100 schools will participate in the two-day regatta scheduled for Friday and Saturday on the Schuylkill.

Ukraine war latest: Putin wraps up China trip with subtle message for West; one dead in airstrike on Odesa

Putin has concluded his two-day visit to China with a back-handed rebuke for Western powers. A Russian airstrike killed one person in Odesa, while in Russia one person was killed while gardening close to the border, according to a local governor.

A close ally of Vladimir Putin has said the EU "does not tolerate" free speech after the bloc banned four more Russian media outlets (see our 7.50am post).

"The EU leadership can only talk about freedom of speech, but in fact it does not tolerate it," said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma.

"They block any alternative point of view, destroy freedom of speech, violate the right to free dissemination and receipt of information."

Russia warned the EU's decision will result in a harsh response against Western media in Moscow, but has yet to say which media organisations it will affect.

The number of victims from a reported Russian airstrike on Friday has risen, officials say.

At least three people are now said to have died, with another 31 injured, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

It is not clear what the attack targeted.

Two more people were injured in separate attacks on Kharkiv on Friday, Mr Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian attacks but the strikes have become more intense in recent months.

Vladimir Putin has wrapped up his trip to China by emphasising the countries' strategic ties as well as his own personal relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The pair spent almost a whole day in "substantive" talks, he said.

The partnership between China and Russia "is not directed against anyone," Mr Putin said in a veiled reference to the West.

"It is aimed at one thing: creating better conditions for the development of our countries and improving the well-being of the people of China and the Russian Federation."

But he still had a back-handed rebuke for the US and others who oppose the Moscow-Beijing relationship, saying an "emerging multipolar world... is now taking shape before our eyes".

"And it is important that those who are trying to maintain their monopoly on decision-making in the world on all issues... do everything in their power to ensure that this process goes naturally," he said.

Both Russia and China have frequently spoken of the "emerging multipolar world" in response to what they view as US hegemony.

The EU has accused four Russian media outlets of spreading propaganda and disinformation about the Ukraine war and banned them from broadcasting in its 27 member nations.

The latest batch of broadcasters consists of Voice of Europe, RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, which the EU claims are all under control of the Kremlin.

The move comes as the EU heads into parliamentary elections in three weeks.

The EU said in a statement that the four are in particular targeting "European political parties, especially during election periods".

One Russian was killed and another injured while they were gardening just inside the Russian border, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Friday.

A Ukrainian drone hit the village of Novaya Naumovka in the southern Russian region of Belgarod, Mr Gladkov wrote on Telegram.

Sky News could not independently confirm the report.

Ukraine has launched frequent drone and shelling attacks on Belgorod and other Russian regions on its border.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Ukraine war.

Two people were killed in an airstrike on Kharkiv on Friday, with Ukrainian officials saying they expect fighting to intensify as Russia continues to attack Ukraine's second largest city.

Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces have taken control of 12 settlements in the Kharkiv region in the past week.

A person was also killed near the Black Sea port of Odesa, a frequent target of Russian attacks, with eight more injured, according to a Ukrainian official.

In other news from the past 24 hours:

  • Russia said the UK was a "de facto participant" in the war. Moscow said it holds the US and UK responsible for attacks on Russian soil because they are allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons against Russian targets;
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the situation in Kharkiv had "stabilised" as of Friday, adding their "deepest point of their advance" was 10 km;
  • Vladimir Putin claimed capturing the city of Kharkiv was not part of Russia's current plan and said Moscow intends to create a "buffer zone" for Russia's own security;
  • A Russian oil refinery was forced into emergency shutdown after a purported Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire. Sources on social media indicated a second Russian oil terminal was also hit.

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for the moment.

Scroll through the blog below to catch up on today's developments.

One person has been killed and another eight injured in a Russian missile attack near the Black Sea port of Odesa, a Ukrainian official has said.

Regional governor Oleh Kiper said five people were being treated in hospital. He posted pictures showing emergency workers near the scene of the strike.

Sky News has not independently verified the report.

Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian missile and drone attacks.

President Vladimir Putin used his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to "promote Kremlin narratives feigning interest in peace negotiations", analysts at the Institute for the Study of War say.

The pair signed a joint statement yesterday alluding to Russia's support for the China's proposed peace plan and a possible future Chinese-led negotiation to end the war in Ukraine.

In the statement, they claim both countries support a "sustainable settlement" for the "Ukraine crisis".

The ISW said it has "previously assessed" the Kremlin will "continue to use any calls for peace negotiations to feign interest in negotiations" in the hope of undermining Western support for Ukraine.

Moscow also hopes the West will force Ukraine into negotiations with Russia that make concessions on Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ISW added.

'Decisive' relationship

Meanwhile, the institute says, Mr Putin likely views Moscow's relationship with Beijing as "decisive" in his bid to further mobilise the Russian economy and defence industry to support his war in Ukraine.

"Putin and Xi highlighted bilateral trade and economic cooperation throughout their public speeches," the ISW says, adding the Russian delegation includes officials and businessmen.

"The Russian delegation likely aimed to expand cooperation with their Chinese counterparts that will facilitate increased economic ties between Russia and the PRC [People's Republic of China]."

China has previously signalled concerns its economic relationship with Russia may open it up to sanctions, the ISW says, and Mr Putin "likely intends to head off these concerns as the Russian defence industry grows increasingly reliant on the PRC".

Earlier today, we reported how a purported Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in Krasnodar, Russia.

The blaze has forced an emergency shut down at the facility, owned by Rosneft, two sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

According to one source, the drones hit the liquefied petroleum gas production unit while the crude distillation unit remained undamaged.

"There was no black smoke during the fire. That means it was just the gas burning", a source said.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported the fire was extinguished, citing local authorities.

The Russian defence ministry said air defences downed 44 drones over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region.

For context: The Tuapse plant's annual capacity is 12 million metric tons, or 240,000 barrels per day.

It produces naphtha, fuel oil, vacuum gasoil and high-sulphur diesel, and supplies fuel mainly Turkey, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
