The classic 46.6m Feadship AZTECA (née LIONWIND) was built in aluminium by Feadship to a design by the iconic Jon Bannenberg. AZTECA has been regularly updated and refitted since her delivery in 1983. In 1997 she had a 1.5m stern extension at Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard, with subsequent refit work in Sydney in 2002, Cairns in 2007 and a one-year refit – with significant structural work to the hull, dry-docking work and other system upgrades – at Malta Superyacht Services in 2008.

The interior is as radical with cocoons of butter-soft, over-stuffed kid leather panels offset with hammered metal detailing and kilometers of thick polished Perspex handrails and details. Conventions were turned on their head. Television sets are housed in cantilevered leather-clad boxes rather than recessed into furniture units. This trend-setting superyacht of all time has inspired countless of designers. When onboard it feels like a journey into Bannenberg’s DNA. The glass-roofed solarium on the top deck and the snug, forward-facing observation saloon were years ahead of their time.

Azteca can accommodate 10 guests in 5 cabins consisting of a spit level master suite with independent access to the main deck, a main deck VIP suite, a further VIP suite on the lower deck and two twins, all with en-suite facilities.

Twin 3,000hp MTU engines give her a cruising speed of 18 knots and a range of 1,500 nautical miles at 15 knots.

At her time of launch, the 1983 46.75m Feadship AZTECA was a gamechanger in yachting design. Now offered for sale in full operable condition with an asking price of €3.25m, she represents the chance to play a part in an incredibly important piece of yachting history.

With naval architecture by De Voogt and interiors by Bannenberg & Rowell, AZTECA is a pedigree yacht with masses of potential.

Originally built for Mexican media mogul Emilio Azcárraga, whose primary concern was speed, AZTECA’s hull was built in aluminium due to its lighter properties, but the flexibility of the material in terms of moulding and shaping also led to it eventually being used for the superstructures of all Feadships.

As part of her continual program of upgrades, in 1997 AZTECA had a 1.5m stern extension at Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard and in 2008 she completed a oneyear refit, which included significant structural work to the hull and other system upgrades at Malta Superyacht Services. During 2021, she had all systems reinstated and rebuilt to RINA standard.

Inside, AZTECA has all the hallmarks of classic Bannenberg design, with cocoons of butter-soft, over-stuffed kid leather panels offset with hammered metal detailing and kilometres of thick polished Perspex handrails and details.

Her radical interiors turned conventions of the time on their head – television sets were housed in cantilevered leather-clad boxes rather than recessed into furniture units, a style that inspired countless designers, and the glass-roofed solarium on the upper deck and the snug, forward-facing observation saloon were years ahead of their time.

AZTECA can accommodate 10 guests across five cabins, including a split-level master suite, with private access to the main deck, a main deck VIP, plus a second VIP suite and two twin cabins on the lower deck.

AZTECA is en route to Monaco, and she will be available for viewing in early December.

Key features:

  • Iconic styling by Jon Bannenberg
  • Feadship pedigree
  • Upper deck glass-roofed solarium
  • Split-level master with private access to the main deck
  • Extensive recommissioning at the Dutch Balk Shipyard

Iconic yachts: Paraiso and Azteca

To say that this pair of yachts, designed by my father for Emilio Azcárraga, caused a sensation at the time is probably an understatement. With hulls like a sheet of folded card, wrapped up to contain the main deck accommodation, Paraiso and Azteca looked as if they had sailed in from another galaxy. Just glance at the autumn 1986 issue of Feadship’s Pilot magazine, which features the group’s other launches of the same period – Enterprise IV , for example. All have elegant but utterly conventional lines. The two yachts caused raised blood pressure at De Vries and Van Lent but it was channelled into keen competition within the Feadship family, and I remember endless debates as to who had built the better boat – there was never a definitive answer, I recall.

The interiors were no less radical: cocoons of butter-soft, over-stuffed kid leather panels offset with hammered metal detailing and kilometres of thick polished Perspex handrails and details. Bird’s eye maple featured in abundance &ndash: natural on Azteca and stained dark tobacco on Paraiso . In an interesting cultural tweak, the Dutch upholsterers had to be persuaded by my father to leave the creases in the leather panelling and put aside their default wish to pull them tight for an immaculate, smooth finish. They just couldn’t accept that the quilted finish was what he was after and thought he was being slipshod.

Conventions were turned on their head. Television sets were housed in cantilevered leather-clad boxes rather than recessed into furniture units; bathroom mirrors were big discs of glass, clasped off-centre by a single bird’s eye maple support into which three naked light bulbs had been recessed for make-up lighting. Extra cooling in the interior spaces came from deckhead-mounted swivelling fans, each with a bird’s eye maple cowling. I think the Dutch found it a bit bewildering. There were so many handrails, door handles and custom fittings in polished, overscale Perspex that on one famous occasion a direction arrow on one of the Bannenberg drawings was accidentally turned into a large piece of Perspex by the ever-willing interior sub-contractor.

A couple of years ago, I went on board Paraiso at the Monaco Show with three of my team who all joined the company after my father died. It felt like a journey into the very DNA of his design vocabulary. The glass-roofed solarium on the top deck and the snug, forward-facing observation saloon were years ahead of their time – but probably much too scary for buyers looking for a sensible 44 metre motor yacht.

My father worked closely with George Nicholson on the projects, and a nice picture was taken of them standing together in front of a very wintry De Vries yard with Azteca rearing up through the fractured ice like a faceted iceberg. It was quite a neat metaphor for the impact the sisterships had on the yachting world at the time.

Best Feadship Yachts for Sale

Feadship is a pedigree Dutch shipyard and one of the most successful luxury yacht builders in the world. Delivering yachts since 1949, Feadship is renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and their boats are among the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Specializing in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest superyacht builds in the world, Feadship’s continuous evolution in the design, engineering and construction of their vessels has made them one of, if not the market leader in the large, custom superyacht sector.

History of Feadship Yachts

The award-winning Dutch yacht builder comprises of two shipyards, De Vries and Van Lent, and the naval architecture firm De Voogt. Their origins predate the 20thcentury – the roots of the Van Lent shipyard go back to 1849, while De Vries opened its doors in 1906 and De Voogt designs go back to 1912. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the three entities joined forces, along with several other Dutch shipyards, to form Feadship (which is an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipyards) as an export association to promote their yachts to a thriving American market. In fact, up until 1973, a Feadship was defined as a yacht sold to an American owner.

The seven yards were struggling in post-war Europe but were met with great success in America, thanks in part to their quality craftsmanship and finish, and the fact that they were made of steel, something the American market had not seen. Their success was also down to the fact that they offered completely custom designed yachts, such a concept was almost unique and a very attractive offering for the booming American market.

Following a period of success and massive growth in the industry as Western economies boomed, the Feadship shipyards underwent a series of mergers and by 1968 the Feadship brand was consolidated to become three original entities, comprising of the two shipyards De Vries and Van Lent, alongside De Voogt Naval Architects. Many of the descendants of the original three shipbuilding families still work for the company today.

Feadship’s yacht-building facilities are based in Aalsmeer, Makkum and Kaag, while the design and engineering center, De Voogt, is located in Haarlem. The Royal Van Lent yard on Kaag Island has two dry docks and two slipways up to 328 feet (100m). Over 300 craftsmen are based at the Kaag Island yard. The Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw facility is made up of a group of companies that operate two outfitting yards in Aalsmeer and Makkum; here more than 800 craftsmen build custom superyachts of 328-plus feet (100m) in length. 250 of these craftsmen work at the De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum shipyard facility building yachts up to 393 feet (120m) in length.

Feadship also launched a fourth new construction and refit facility in the heart of the Dutch capital in late 2019, where they have the facilities to build yachts of up to 525-feet (160m) in length.

Since more than half of Feadship’s clients are American, the brand operates an office out of Fort Lauderdale. This office runs sales, acts as the global center of operations for Feadship Yachts Charter Design. It also acts as the point of contact for the U.S., South America and the Caribbean. You can visit the office or check out our online selection to see a wide selection of Feadship yachts for sale.

Feadship Yachts Models: Luxury Yacht Fleet

To date, Feadship has delivered a fleet of more than 425 vessels, the majority of which have been motor yachts. Wherever there are Feadship yachts for sale you will find customers of the highest profile seeking the highest quality. Feadship yachts have attracted numerous famous owners and have won countless awards for their quality builds and innovative projects. Between 1957 and 1986 they built three yachts for Malcolm Forbes, president of Forbes Magazine, including the iconic steel-hulled THE HIGHLANDER, which is said to have inspired Henry Ford II into commissioning the 109-foot (33.2m) SANTA MARIA (1963).

Since then they have been responsible for the build of iconic vessels the likes of  the 221-foot (67.3m) NEW HORIZON L (which at the time of her launch in 1983 was one of the most expensive yachts ever built), 172-foot (51m) GALLANT LADY (2007), the 154-foot (46.6m) AZTECA (1983), the 282-foot (86m) ECSTASEA (2004), the 255-foot (78m) VENUS (2012), the 324-foot (99m) MADAME GU (2013), the 333-foot (101.5m) SYMPHONY (2015) (the biggest ever Feadship built), the 301-foot (92m) AQUARIUS (2016), the 274-foot (83.5m) first  eco-friendly superyacht SAVANNAH  (2016), the 241-foot (73.6m) explorer-style SHERPA (2018), the recently delivered 305-foot (93m) LADY S, and the  most secure superyacht in the world, the 203 foot (62m) SEA OWL .

In order to protect the Feadship pedigree, the renown luxury yacht builder recently launched their own Refit & Services facility. Combining all the services previously offered by the individual Feadship yards, the new company offers major refits in the Netherlands and has partnered with four leading yards in the Mediterranean and US for services. To continue the protection of the Feadship heritage, Feadship also formed the Feadship Heritage Fleet. Uniting the owners of classic Feadship yachts around the world, the association is restricted to owners of registered Feadships built more than 30 years ago.

About feadship yachts.

There are yachts and there are Feadships. Feadship, aka First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders, is based in the Netherlands with roots dating back to 1849. The yacht builder was formed in 1949 when 6 Dutch shipyards came together to market superyachts to buyers in the United States. As Feadship’s influence increased around the world, so did the size of the yachts it delivered. Part of their reputation has been established by celebrity owners such as magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes, who commissioned the 46-meter superyacht HIGHLANDER, which was delivered in 1986. Another major name to build a Feadship is Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs, who had a hand in designing VENUS, a 78.2m gigayacht. Today, Feadship is a joint venture between De Vries (f. 1906), Van Lent (f. 1849), and De Voogt Naval Architects (f. 1913). Feadship is recognized as the world leader in the field of pure custom yachts. They take pride in giving their clients a blank page to create a superyacht that is unlike any other in the world. Thanks to this strategy, Feadship yachts for sale are some of the most sought-after yachts in the industry.

Feadship’s philosophy is: “clients have carte blanche to create whatever they desire, and we start with the assumption that everything is possible”.

Feadship Yachts History

Formed as a group in 1949, Feadship has roots that can be traced back further than a century. The generations of craftsmen who launched iconic boats under the leadership of the De Vries, Van Lent, and De Voogt families in the 1800s and first half of the 1900s are an integral part of the Feadship story.

A Pedigree Like No Other

The roots of the Van Lent yard go back to 1849, while the De Vries yard opened its doors in 1906. Also, the earliest De Voogt designs stem from 1913, giving Feadship a pedigree full of rich history. With an immense history of famous owners and an ongoing list of award-winning projects and innovations, Feadship is now firmly established in the lucrative market of yacht seekers. The list of VIP Feadship enthusiasts is ever-changing, but amongst others were: Henry Ford II with SANTA MARIA; Arthur Wirtz with his Feadship yacht BLACKHAWK; and James Ryder, who enjoyed his first Feadship Yacht JARDELL so much, he immediately ordered a larger one, named BIG R.

About Impetuous

A number of yachts, notably Impetuous in 1977, and Azteca and Paraiso four years on, boasted an all-aluminum hull construction. As the owners' primary consideration was speed, aluminum was chosen because of its lighter properties, and Feadship was able to respond to this latest requirement. As well as being lighter, aluminum's intrinsic flexibility in terms of shaping and molding resulted in it eventually being used for the superstructures of all Feadships.
