• Our recent AGM was marked by a heartfelt farewell from Commodore Paul Scott (Scottie), who stepped down after 17 years of dedicated service. In a moving Zoom address, he expressed his gratitude to both the committee and members, sharing words that will undoubtedly resonate with us for years to come. We offer our deepest thanks to "Scottie" for his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment throughout his tenure. In appreciation of his dedicated service, the Club has conferred to Paul the title Commodore Emeritus. As we turn a new page, we warmly welcome COMMODORE DAVE FOA as our new man in the hot seat.

Exmouth hosts powerboat grand-prix

40 top powerboat racers head for Jurassic Gateway Grand-prix at Exmouth for this weekend’s racing

The third round of the RYA British National Powerboat Championship at Exmouth this weekend has attracted 40 of Britain’s top crews. Organised by British Inflatable Boat Owners Association and Exe Powerboat and Ski Club, the two-day series is a vital one for competitors, as points count towards a coveted place in the RYA National Championship to be held off Gibraltar in November.

With the beach and cliffs surrounding the River Exe estuary acting as a natural amphitheatre, spectators are assured a grandstand view of the excitement. The programme is designed for all the family, commencing on Saturday 6th July with an air/sea rescue demonstration by the RNLI and Coastguard services at 1130.

Saturday’s race, styled The Dash for Cash? opens with a Le Mans style start, with drivers running down the beach to leap into their boats before chasing off round an 18.5 mile course to Torbay and back.

At 1830, competitors and their boats will join a carnival procession through the Town accompanied by a jazz band.

Sunday’s offshore race will start close to the beach and clock tower at 1100.

Competing classes include class III, 4litre, 2litre and 1.3litre, Pro-vee and Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBS) Among those to watch out for is local ace Stuart Anthony and his 80mph R21 Graffiti? who is currently tied in 1st place in the Formula I RIB class with Jackie Hunt, the sole lady driver in this Class.

“The Le Man start should provide quite a spectacle with competitors and perhaps spectators getting their feet wet,” says John Puddifoot, the RYA’s Powerboat Racing Manager who will also be competing in his R6 Dragon’s Revenge? which leads the Formula 2 Rib class. “This is a new concept in powerboat racing, and if successful could well be introduced at other events around the Country.”

EPBSC Awards (Image: EPBSC)

On a night of sporting celebration, 80 members and their guests gathered at the Royal Beacon Hotel, not for tea and crumpets, but for the annual Exe PowerBoat & Ski Club (EPBSC) awards night, writes Mark Hayward.

Buckle up, landlubbers, 'cause this night was full of twists, turns, and more trophies than a pirate's booty.

Mark Sansom, our fearless MC (without a microphone), steered the ship while awards rained down like hailstones on a stormy race. Craig Temple-Murray, the Usain Bolt of boats (minus the lightning and fancy dance shoes), cleaned up the house, snatching the Single Seater (T850) trophy, Boxing Day Shield, and New Year's Day trophy like they were going out of style (spoiler: they're not).

His navigator for New Year’s Day, yours truly, Mark Hayward, probably deserved a co-pilot trophy for keeping Craig from steering into the sunset (or a rogue sea).

Other brave souls got their due, with trophies flying faster than a runaway jet ski for Boxing Day and New Year's Day runners-up. Lou Foa, the rally ace, snagged the Ken Soper/Brass Monkey trophy, proving everyone can be a winner (even if their nickname sounds like a mischievous monkey stole their award).

But wait, there's more!

The night wouldn't be complete without some side-splitting "mishaps." Malachy Browne received the "Early Bath" trophy for taking an impromptu swim (boat-induced), Drew Langdon grabbed the "Gear Box" trophy for his impressive collection of busted cogs, and Ben Corser, the undisputed king of "Bent Prop," earned his namesake award for a prop that looked like it tangoed with a rock.

Laughter wasn't the only thing flowing this night! A generous raffle with prizes fit for a pirate king (minus the scurvy) filled the club's coffers faster than a powerboat on nitrous.

Mark your calendars, landlubbers! The new season kicks off on April 17 with the Ken Soper/Brass Monkey trophy rally. Dust off your sea legs, because this duckpond ain't for the faint of heart (or easily seasick).

Remember, at the EPBSC, awards are just the tip of the iceberg. It's about camaraderie, crazy adventures, and maybe a few "bent prop" moments along the way. So, raise your grog, gin (or juice box) and join the fun! Disclaimer: No actual pirates or ducks were harmed during this event (probably).

BBC Race Across The World praised for 'most emotional scene of 2024'

BBC Race Across The World contestant James Mukherjee has opened up about breaking down on TV and receiving a hug from a cameraman. The heartwarming moment has been described by viewers as the ‘most emotional’ television scene of the year.

The 21-year-old and his sister Betty, 26, shared a sweet moment together in the penultimate episode last week. James was left in tears as Betty opened up about her health condition, Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) Syndrome.

While speaking directly to the camera, viewers saw James trying to hold back tears. He then asked: “Can someone just come and hug me, please?”

A BBC cameraman, called Chris, embraced him. “Come here… You’re all right," he told James.

James discussed the emotional moment during Race Across The World’s reunion episode, which aired after the finale. All five teams were reunited in London to chat about the highs and lows of the race, giving viewers a glimpse into all the behind the scenes action.

Sitting around a table at London’s The Mayfair Townhouse hotel, James addressed the moving scene. “There was a time where I got quite emotional,” he said. “There was a point where I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

James added: “It was our camera guy who put the camera down and came over, and hugged me. I was crying into his shoulder. It was just something, in a time of need. And I think that’s what we had with our crew.”

James then shared the clip on social media. On X, formerly known as Twitter , James thanked Chris for his kindness.

He wrote: “A moment of raw and true emotion. Just a massive thank you to Chris, the hugging cameraman! He put up with us through blood, sweat and tears and we can’t thank him and the rest of the team enough! What a great series!”

The siblings have been inundated with praise for showing their emotions on screen. Harrison replied: “This will be the most moving TV moment of the year I feel.”

Louis said: “These two will always have a special place in my heart! Brother and sister who genuinely bonded and showed each other such kindness along the way.”

Chetan tweeted: “Sibling dynamics can be complex. All too often the focus is on tension or rivalry. Been great to see the nuance as these two got to better understand each other across the weeks. Love all the pairs but can’t help feeling Betty & James travelled the furthest.”

Wando agreed: “The most emotional moment of TV history for 2024. You can tell how moved the cameraman was as well once he stepped back still well up seeing James just asking for a hug.”

Matthew said: “Betty and James may not win the race but they’ve won our hearts." Leah wrote: “Betty & James are a RATW pairing for the ages.

"They’ve shown so much growth and evolution. They’ve bonded, they’ve shown each other grace and patience. They’ve rocked sliders and Crocs in every country they visited. Betty’s hair remained immaculate. Love them!”

The fourth series of Race Across The World culminated in one of the closest finishes ever. Best friends Alfie and Owen took home the title and £20,000 prize pot. They beat mum and daughter duo Eugenie and Isabel by just eight minutes to the final checkpoint, located on Gili Meno.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
