Mythical brand if ever there was one in the 90s, on the outboard boat market, White Shark has just changed hands. 

French Boat Market, French importer of the pleasure boat brands Pursuit, Galeon, Galia, Numarine, Rodman, Northstar and Nuova Jolly, has just announced the purchase of White Shark from its owner, the Oleron-based shipyard Guymarine, managed by Nicolas Chiloff.

This buyout seems logical, given the completely different positioning of Guymarine - the latest French specialist in promenade fishing boats - and White Shark, the luxury French-style outboard boats.

1993 - White Shark and André Dauxin

Talking about White Shark is inseparable from André Dauxin, boss at the beginning of the 90s of OMC France, subsidiary of the American nautical giant, which then produced the Evinrude and Johnson outboard motors, but also boat brands such as Four-Winns and Chris-Craft, Javelin....

Wishing to create a top-of-the-range French outboard brand, OMC launched the White Shark brand in 1993 - based on a creative idea by André Dauxin - whose models would be built in Vannes, at the Kelt shipyard, the French production unit of the American group. 

Right from the launch, the success is immediate. It must be said that the good fairies looked at the cradle of the new born, which reuses Chris Craft hulls - please - with European-style deck plans and a more consensual design ! 

From owner... to owner

The difficulties of the OMC group at the end of the 90s, pushes André Dauxin to buy Kelt White Shark in 1996, while signing partnership with OMC for Evinrude outboard engines.  

The explosion of OMC in 2000 - the biggest bankruptcy in the world of yachting - pushed the French manufacturer to sell its yard to the Poncin Group in 2003, which continued to develop the range, before repatriating its production in Charente Maritime, in Marans.

Much less strategic than the rest of the Group's business - multihulls - the brand was sold to Guymarine in 2013.

The buyer, who at the time was sorely lacking in equity capital, will never have the means to relaunch it, and after filing for bankruptcy and taking over in 2016, Guymarine clearly no longer has the means to relaunch two brands at the same time.

French Boat Market, specialist in top-of-the-range boats

Last Thursday's acquisition of White Shark by French Boat Market is good news for the White Shark brand.

Up until now, French Boat Market's offer has lacked a brand of top of the range open hulls, a market which is well known to the Côte d'Azur company, which for a time imported Sessa Marine and Boston Whaler.

The takeover carried out last week concerns the intellectual property rights and hull moulds of the 8 models in the range.

Contacted by ActuNautique, French Boat Market, through its commercial director, Kevin Pittet, told us that he wanted to work with a French naval architecture firm to relaunch White Shark - without touching the magnificent hulls - while thinking about the European industrialist who will be entrusted with production. 

A partnership with an engine manufacturer would be under negotiation, with two brands seeming logically well placed: Yamaha and Mercury Marine.

2 Brothers in Trump Media Insider-Trading Scheme Plead Guilty

Two brothers from Miami pleaded guilty on Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan for their role in a nearly $23 million insider-trading scheme surrounding the 2021 announcement that former President Donald J. Trump’s social media company planned to merge with a cash-rich shell company.

Michael and Gerald Shvartsman, who had pleaded not guilty to securities fraud charges last summer , were set to go on trial later this month. But the brothers decided this week to forgo a trial, instead entering their guilty pleas before Judge Lewis J. Liman of U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Each man pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud.

Michael Shvartsman, according to federal prosecutors, was the mastermind of the scheme to profit from the announcement, in October 2021, that Trump Media & Technology Group planned to merge with Digital World Acquisition Corporation, a shell company that had just raised $300 million in an initial public offering. The authorities charged Michael Shvartsman, 53, a Miami financier, with making $18.2 million in illicit trading profits; and his brother, 46, who owns an outdoor furnishing store in Miami, with raking in $4.6 million.

Michael Shvartsman, who ran a venture investment firm called Rocket One, used some of the proceeds from the scheme to buy a $14 million luxury yacht that he named Provocateur.

The brothers each face prison sentences of up to 20 years. Their plea agreements with the government recommend a sentence of roughly four to five years for Michael Shvartsman; and three to four years for Gerald Shvartsman.

Judge Liman, who is not bound by those recommendations, set sentencing for both men for July 17.

The brothers are Canadian citizens and could face deportation at the end of their sentences.

Gerald Shvartsman told Judge Liman that what he did was wrong and “I will pay dearly for it for the rest of my life.” His brother told the judge, “I understand these trades were unlawful.”

As part of their plea agreements, the brothers agreed to forfeit their trading gains.

A third man charged in the scheme, Bruce Garelick, who had worked at Rocket One, is scheduled to go to trial at the end of the month. The authorities have said that he made less than $50,000 but was critical in giving the brothers nonpublic inside information about the merger talks between Trump Media and Digital World.

Mr. Garelick, a former hedge fund manager, became a board member of Digital World before it went public but after Rocket One had become an investor. A lawyer for Mr. Garelick did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump Media, the parent company of the social media platform Truth Social, completed its merger with Digital World a little over a week ago. The deal has added billions of dollars to Mr. Trump’s net worth and boosted the market valuation of Trump Media even though it lost $58 million last year and took in just $4.l million in advertising revenue on Truth Social.

The federal authorities investigated a handful of other people who were associated with the Shvartsmans and had made profitable trades around the time of the merger announcement, according to court filings. Among them was Anton Postolnikov, a Russian American financier who made $22.8 million in trading profits. But none of those individuals were charged with wrongdoing, or found to have any ties to anyone associated with Trump Media.

Michael Shvartsman’s plea agreement made reference to his “causing” a friend, a business associate and a neighbor to make trades in Digital World securities in advance of the merger announcement.

No one from Trump Media was charged with any wrongdoing, either., The insider-trading investigation contributed to a more than two-year delay in completing the merger. The deal was also held up by a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into what regulators said were inappropriate merger talks between the companies. It was resolved last summer, with Digital World agreeing to pay an $18 million fine.

An earlier version of this article misstated a detail of the plea agreement. Michael Shvartsman will not necessarily have to forfeit his yacht to the government.

White Shark of London

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht White Shark of London is a 32 m yacht launched by Taiwan shipyard Johnson Yachts in 2008. With composite hull and superstructure, she features exterior design and naval architecture by the renowned Dixon Yacht Design, and the interior work of Norbert Jansen. The luxury vessel sleeps 11 guests and four crew.

White Shark of London is a semi-custom flybridge adaptation of the Johnson 105 model, and the first of the series to sail European seas. As is standard with the 105 series, the owners of the motor yacht were free to choose between three, four, or five guest cabins and to customise the interior design.

In design, the luxury yacht manages to be both modern and classic with glossy Canadian cherry hardwood floors and tables, black granite countertops, white chairs and lounges, and Italian linens in natural colours. The main salon provides a slight divergence from the general design and exudes the elegance of a comfortable hotel lounge.

Exterior areas are equally as attractive with a dining table for 12, bar, BBQ, Jacuzzi, and sofa on the flybridge. Amongst White Shark of London’s accommodations are a split-level Master suite on the main deck; and two VIP and two Twin suites with en suite on the lower deck. Crew are accommodated in two cabins with en suite, and a mess with dining table and cooking area.

Powered by twin Caterpillar 1,825hp engines, White Shark of London has a top speed of 24 knots and cruises comfortably at 21 knots.

2nd massive great white shark in 2 days pings off Space Coast as Delta IV Heavy launch awaits

The second king-sized visitor in two days has surfaced in the waters off the Space Coast, coinciding with the eagerly awaited final launch of the Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral.

Scot, a 1,600-pound great white shark , was tracked by the nonprofit research group OCEARCH far off the coast of Palm Bay early Friday.

The massive shark pinged southeast of Palm Bay at 1:23 a.m. A ping means the shark's dorsal fin, to which a satellite tag has been attached, broke the water's surface long enough to transmit location information.

Scot also pinged in the Florida Keys  on Feb. 10 and Feb. 28. The shark's previous Florida trips took him into the Gulf of Mexico near Sarasota in March 2022 and it hung out around the Florida Keys from April through June of 2023.

Early on Thursday morning, a 13-foot 7-inch, 1,701-pound great white shark , named  Mahone , pinged far off Cape Canaveral's coast, just hours before Delta IV Heavy was scheduled to launch . The Thursday launch was eventually delayed by weather and was still on hold Friday morning.

The sharks' locations should be prime viewing areas for the powerful rocket's launch . Depending on cloud cover, visibility is reportedly possible from most of Florida.

Scot  was tagged by OCEARCH scientists off Nova Scotia near Ironbound Island on September 8, 2021.

At that time, the shark was classified as an adult male, measuring 12-feet 3-inches and weighing 1,644-pounds

Scot was the 74th great white shark tagged by OCEARCH in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

According to OCEARCH , Scot was named by its SeaWorld partners after the people of Nova Scotia, "who have always been so welcoming and committed to the science and health of our oceans."

What is OCEARCH?

OCEARCH is a nonprofit research organization studying the ocean's giants.

The group studies great white sharks and other keystone species essential for the health of the oceans.

OCEARCH is launching its 47th expedition on April 1. It departs from Jacksonville, Florida and is scheduled to make its final docking in Charleston, South Carolina on April 21.

During expeditions, researchers have collected previously unattainable data on the animals' migrations, reproductive cycle, genetic status, diet, abundance, and more.

"If we lose the apex predator (sharks) then we lose all our fish and then there are no fish sandwiches for our grandchildren," OCEARCH founder Chris Fischer told USA TODAY Network's The  Courier-Journal . "That's oversimplified, of course, but the idea is important because many shark species are threatened by overfishing and a demand for shark fins in Asia. Their dwindling numbers jeopardize ocean habitats."

OCEARCH provides an online map tracking the tagged shark's travels.

Each animal has a Smart Position and Temperature Transmitting Tag (SPOT) tag attached to its dorsal fin which emits a ping when it breaks the water's surface for a short time and transmits location information to trackers.

The most notable tracker page belongs to a 13-foot 3-inch white shark nicknamed Breton . The 1,437-pound shark's pings from September 2020 to January 2022 connect to show what appears to be the outline of a colossal shark, with the tail in Nova Scotia, the body spanning the East Coast and the head pointing at Florida's east coast.

According to its tracker, OCEARCH has tagged 371 sharks, including 123 great white sharks.

The group has also tagged alligators, dolphins, seals, swordfish and turtles.

A dolphin's presence does not mean there are no sharks nearby. Both eat the same food items, meaning both can be present.

"If anything, it's the opposite," Stephen Kajiura, a shark expert at Florida Atlantic University, told  Live Science , "If you see dolphins, more often than not, there might be sharks in that same area."

Great white sharks in Florida

Great white  sharks  migrate south when the water gets cold and food sources become scarce up north, according to  OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Bob Hueter .

Think of them as the snowbirds of sharks.

Most of them tend to stay away from the beaches in continental shelf waters, Hueter said.

Most shark attacks happen in Florida

There were 69 documented unprovoked  shark attacks  around the globe in 2023. The U.S. led the world with 36 attacks and Florida again was the state with the most bites at 16.

In the past 47 years, there have been  1,230 shark bites  worldwide, according to data from  floridapanhandle.com , with  great white sharks credited as the top biters . No white shark has been identified in a Florida shark bite from 1926 to present, according to Shark Attack File .

How to reduce your risk of a shark attack

While the chances are slim, shark bites and attacks can happen. There are things you can do to reduce the risk:

  • Don't go into the water alone.
  • Don't go too far from shore. Being far away from the shore means it could take too long for emergency assistance to reach you.
  • Avoid swimming at dawn or at dusk. Sharks are most active at those times and the risk of a shark mistaking you for other prey increases when the light is low.
  • Don't go into the water where people are fishing.
  • Be cautious in areas between sandbars and near dropoffs.
  • Don't wear high-contrast clothing. Sharks see contrast very well.
  • Take off shiny jewelry. It can shimmer and look like fish that sharks prey upon.
  • Try not to splash. Sharks may mistake the noise for a struggling fish.
  • Don't go into the water if sharks are known to be present and get out if sharks are seen.
  • If you are bleeding, stay out of the water.

Who Owns Superyachts In 2023 —And What Does That Mean For You As Crew?

Where once oligarchs, oil tycoons, royals and old money ruled the roost in the yachting world, tech billionaires have increasingly dominated the superyacht market. Who are these people — and more importantly — what does their different style of ‘yachting’ mean for you as crew?

The list of tech billionaires (at least, the list we know of) is long and getting longer by the year. And as their wealth grows, so does the size of the boats they own!

Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison (Musashi), Charles Simonyi (SKAT), Sergey Brin (Dragonfly), and Larry Page (Senses) are just some of the tech billionaires known to own a superyacht. Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, is rumoured to own Andromeda.

While we can only speculate on how these exact individuals use their yachts or what they are like onboard, some general traits might set the tech billionaire yacht owner out as using their yachts differently than generations of yacht owners before them.

Overall, tech billionaires are often younger, more adventurous and less hidebound regarding old rules and service styles. Here are a few general trends we can assume.

They want to eat well, but less fussily, and with a greater premium on health.

Where silver service, ultra-decadent meals, and mountains of wasted food were — and often still are— preferred by old-money yacht owners and charterers, the modern tech billionaire is more likely to be health-conscious and eat food that is plated rather than buffet style or silver service. Yacht chefs now need to be more skilled in special diets, such as plant-based or keto, and offer a broader range of cuisines.

They want to WORK.

Superyachts used to be for holidays only. This was partly by necessity —the lack of connectivity meant that work went on the back burner for summer months as guests swanned around the Mediterranean. Now, the extraordinary technological strides on board allow yacht owners to have offices where they can work anywhere in the world.

They want to go far beyond the milk run.

While anchoring off St Tropez or Cap Ferrat for weeks in August will always be in style, there has been an explosion in remote cruising, often fuelled by this younger, more adventurous set of yacht owners who can work from anywhere- Antarctica to Alaska and beyond.

A desire for adventure and exploration has changed yacht design.

As younger, more adventurous owners like tech billionaires have joined the superyacht market, the design of yachts and the toys they carry have changed markedly. New types of vessels have been created to meet this desire for off-the-beaten-track cruising, from support yachts to water toys to the massive growth in explorer yachts. Gone are the days when one yacht layout was almost identical to another. Now, we have winter gardens, submarines, ice rooms, ski rooms, large onboard offices, and helicopter hangars.

Not all of these changes have been driven by tech billionaires, granted. Still, their vision of what is possible has dramatically changed what yachts look like and how they operate as machines, with new types of propulsion, greater ranges, and a considerable amount more tech onboard.

Some things never change.

One thing hasn’t changed, though—a wealthy person’s desire for privacy. Discretion remains perhaps the most essential trait in any crew member, which you must keep in mind when working on yachts —even in the day of constant social media and shows like Below Deck.

A wealthy person’s desire for privacy and discretion is a constant that crew forget at their peril. Are you ensuring that you are a trusted asset? You may have signed that NDA, but do you let stories slip now and then at the bar? Are you careful about not taking photos onboard that give away anything about the boat or the owners? Do you make sure you don’t share the yacht’s cruising plans?

In a world where stories about tech billionaires will fly around the globe at light speed, you must be the gatekeeper. Stories cannot leave the passerelle.

Not so fast on Steward-Optum deal

The struggling steward health group is trying to sell its physician network to optum, but state and federal regulators ought to scrutinize the impacts first..

Facing serious financial struggles, Steward Health is seeking to sell its physician network to Optum, a subsidiary of health insurance giant UnitedHealth Group.

The deal would provide an influx of cash to shore up the foundering health care system. But Optum is no white knight running to the rescue. Both UnitedHealth and Steward are for-profit companies with histories of questionable financial transactions, and the deal could harm Steward’s already-struggling hospitals in Massachusetts if those physicians stop sending them referrals.

State and federal regulators should not view this transaction as necessary or a done deal, and should not bow to pressure from Steward or Optum to rubber stamp it. Rather, government agencies should bring a dose of skepticism and careful scrutiny to investigate what the deal would mean for health care prices, access, compliance with antitrust laws, and the state’s overall health care landscape.

Steward CEO Ralph de la Torre should not be allowed to sell the doctors network and use the profits to buy a third yacht as his Massachusetts hospitals flounder.

Both the seller and the buyer offer reasons to be skeptical of the transaction.

Steward has a history of selling off profitable assets to withdraw cash. Part of what precipitated its current financial crisis was Steward’s decision to sell the land belonging to its Massachusetts hospitals to a real estate investment trust, taking a profit while saddling the hospitals with high rent payments.

Steward’s filing notifying the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission about the proposed sale does not say which doctors would move to Optum, other than that the group includes clinicians across nine states. A Steward spokesperson declined to comment. But there are real questions about what selling the physician group would mean for Steward’s eight Massachusetts hospitals, at least some of which the system also seeks to sell. If the doctors generate money for the system, stripping them out could leave the hospitals in worse financial shape. For example, if these physicians no longer refer patients to Steward hospitals, that would decrease the hospitals’ patient volume. If physicians working in the hospitals are not included in any future sale, that would lower the hospitals’ value.

It is also not a given that the money Steward earns from the sale would be used to shore up hospitals, rather than repaying debt or even being withdrawn by executives as profit.

Since Steward decided to sell its physician groups as a national entity, instead of splitting off physicians in each state, there is a limited pool of potential buyers, and Optum may be a reasonable choice. Optum is the country’s largest employer of doctors, with nearly 90,000 physicians in its network. It is part of UnitedHealth, one of the country’s largest health insurers. In Massachusetts, Optum already bought Reliant Medical Group in 2018 and Atrius Health in 2022.

UnitedHealth also owns Optum Rx, an online pharmacy and pharmacy benefit manager; a bank that offers health-related financial products; and Change Healthcare, the technology firm that was recently subject to a cyberattack that massively disrupted health care.

But bigger isn’t necessarily better. The enormous growth of a company that controls multiple parts of the health care system raises concerns about self-dealing and anti-competitive practices intended to drive rivals out of the market. The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Department of Justice is investigating UnitedHealth for antitrust violations. The newspaper said investigators are asking about the relationships between the insurer and its provider groups and about the impact acquiring doctor groups has on competitors.

Their concerns appear to be that UnitedHealth is providing higher reimbursement rates to Optum doctors than to their competitors or is avoiding federal rules regulating insurer profits by increasing the prices paid to its own doctors. Investigators are also reportedly questioning UnitedHealth’s Medicare billing practices — practices that previously drew scrutiny from the Office of Inspector General, which suggested UnitedHealth was using questionable billing practices to drive up Medicare Advantage payments.

Top Massachusetts politicians, including Representative Jake Auchincloss, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Massachusetts House Speaker Ron Mariano, have raised concerns about the acquisition due to the antitrust investigation and corporate practices by UnitedHealth.

While UnitedHealth does not have a large footprint as an insurer in Massachusetts, it could seek to expand as it buys up local physician groups. UnitedHealth has come under scrutiny nationally for improperly denying insurance claims , including, Stat reported , using an algorithm to decide when to stop paying for rehabilitation for seriously ill patients.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has no role in reviewing the transaction because Steward separated its physicians into a corporate entity that is distinct from DPH-licensed hospitals. Steward and Optum will have to provide information to the Health Policy Commission, which will decide whether the sale is anticipated to have a significant impact on health care costs and market functioning. Given the context, the commission — an independent state board with members appointed by the governor, attorney general, and auditor — should determine that it will have an impact and initiate a full Cost and Market Impact Review .

While the commission cannot block a transaction, its findings could inform state and federal antitrust investigations. Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s office has authority to make sure the transaction is not impermissibly anticompetitive under state antitrust laws, and she said her office is doing so.

Given its size, the transaction also must be reported to the Federal Trade Commission and US Department of Justice, which can and should thoroughly review the proposal to ensure it does not violate federal antitrust laws. The Department of Justice has been vocal in the past regarding concerns about competition and conflict of interest in consolidations of payers and providers. It has tried to block previous UnitedHealth transactions, including an unsuccessful attempt to block the insurer’s acquisition of Change Healthcare.

The attorney general and federal regulators can challenge the purchase in court if either one believe it violates antitrust laws . Settlement negotiations could potentially allow government to impose conditions on the sale, as Attorney General Martha Coakley did when Steward bought its first Massachusetts hospitals in 2010. But the Department of Justice under President Biden has been skeptical about the efficacy of conditions and has generally sought to block transactions entirely.

This deal may ultimately emerge as the best option to shore up the troubled company. But it must be structured in a way that does not devastate Steward’s Massachusetts hospitals, unduly harm other doctors in the region, hike health care prices, or jeopardize quality of care.

Trimarans such as 84m/275.6ft luxury yacht WHITE RABBIT are a rarity within the luxury yachting industry, however the benefits of multiple hulls have been well recorded, providing greater stability and with top quality contemporary naval architecture, a smoother cruising experience with reduced noise and less of an environmental impact.

Billionaire WHITE RABBIT Owner Goh Cheng Liang is one strong proponent for trimarans: His previous 61.4m/201ft luxury yacht built by North West Bay Yachts Pty Ltd. Australia – also named WHITE RABBIT – was a trimaran delivered in 2005 and accommodated up to 16 guests and 16 crew.

He is in an excellent position to judge their benefits, having started with a monohull from Feadship in 1989 before owning a second monohull in 1995 also named WHITE RABBIT. In 2001 he changed to a catamaran before going for his first trimaran in 2005, the 61m/201ft predecessor to the current – and fifth – WHITE RABBIT.

A 51/167ft luxury support catamaran named CHARLEY followed suit in 2017 that has on board a grand piano in the main salon, a sheltered observation deck and touch-n’-go helipad. The most impressive features aboard CHARLEY however are her dive store with a decompression chamber and a sonar system for finding wreck dives. The accommodation provides for five guests over three en-suite staterooms, and a crew of 13 to ensure that everything runs smoothly on board.

Echo Yachts also built the latest WHITE RABBIT trimaran launched in 2018, and at the  World Superyacht Awards 2019 she was nominated for the  Displacement Motor Yachts 2,000GT and above category, was a finalist in the  Best Exterior Styling Motor Yachts 60m and Above category at the  Boat International Design & Innovation Awards 2019 and won the  Best Naval Architecture: Displacement Motor Yachts category at the same awards show.

M/Y WHITE RABBIT has a wide beam of 20m/65.6ft, which is 5m/16.4ft wider than most monohulls in this same size category. As a result she has a large interior volume of 2,940 GT, which is comparable to monohulls of 90m/295ft in size: Recently refitted 85.1m/279ft SOLANDGE weighs in at 2,899 GT, while 108m/354ft Benetti giga yacht IJE is not so far off with an interior volume of 3,367 GT.

Indoor socialising

When it came to creating the interior layout for WHITE RABBIT, Sam Sorgiovanni had practice with the previous smaller luxury trimaran. Owner Goh Cheng Liang provided a clear brief: The larger vessel was to be used by extended family encompassing multiple generations with the capacity for corporate use. The resulting accommodation sleeps up to 30 guests across 11 en-suite cabins consisting of 2 Master suites, 3 VIP staterooms and 6 other guest cabins. Each family member was consulted for their input on the accommodation and entertaining areas (totalling 1,200m²/12,916ft²), and the response was overwhelmingly ‘more of the same from 61-metre WHITE RABBIT, just on a larger scale’. The art deco styling of the smaller trimaran has also been transferred, albeit in a more subtle fashion, such as the wall sconces and the jellyfish-like light column at the main salon bar.

Brushed Tasmanian oak in a chequered pattern can be found throughout the decks and adds a welcoming touch to the elegant interiors designed to suit a formal event as much as family time together.

As the crew of 32 are on call around the clock, they are almost just as well catered for as the guests and have a massive mess and lounge on the main deck forward that has plenty of natural light and great views. Sorgiovanni requested the cabinetry and furnishings be custom made by Alia Yachts in Turkey following their quality collaboration on M/Y RUYA in 2016.

The open plan main salon places a more contemporary lounge to port, while to starboard the space is designed to suit the older generations. While there is a degree of privacy between the two spaces, there is still a connection that prevents separation altogether. Farther aft is the bar, games room and dining area. As there are no TVs in the cabins (except the Owner’s), the younger generations are not hidden away throughout their time on board and are instead engaging with the rest of the group.

A sweeping staircase leads from the main deck foyer to the upper deck, where the skylounge has a more cosy and intimate atmosphere after the expansive main salon. This media-focused room is furnished with a karaoke area and a baby grand piano. The guest accommodation placed upon this level enjoys excellent views through large yet more traditional windows that create a ‘viewing portal’ effect while maintaining guest privacy. Instead of an abundance of wardrobe space, guests have a bench to lay out their belongings, as those on board are expected to spend much of their time in the social areas and at each destination, using their cabins only for rest and the en-suite facilities.

The sundeck above provides another games lounge within the forward section along with a cinema fitted with chairs that shake with the on-screen action.

Life alfresco

Outside, the broad beam provides plenty of room for dockside events hosting up to 200 guests.

As a result of having three hulls there are three swim platforms, the centre on being the largest for sunbathing beside the water, while the side platforms have staircases for access to the main deck aft.

Both this area and the upper deck are designed for alfresco dining, while the foredeck is more suited to outdoor lounging with two circular drinks tables and plenty of seating for the whole group to watch the sunset or a local regatta. The bow section is used for storing the larger water toys and tenders, which are launched and retrieved using a Davit crane.

The sundeck is furnished with a spa pool and sunbeds, while to the aft, a large alfresco dining table is placed beneath the shade of an overhang.

The outdoor spaces seem sparse in comparison to the rich interior detail, yet this suits the family fine as they spend most of their time together conversing indoors, exploring their destinations or playing in the water.

Engineering

When it comes to on board comfort through engineering, trimarans provide a smoother on board experience during cruising, while at anchor and in bow-on weather when compared to monohulls of approximately the same displacement. It is only in stern-quartering seas that trimarans under-perform in comparison, and to combat this effect the naval architects used experience gained from the previous design of the 64m/209ft WHITE RABBIT trimaran to add solutions such as the four large Naiad fins around the centre hull. To reduce the roll, each hull was designed with significant flare and the Owner is able to choose the buoyancy in the outer hulls to match his comfort preference.

The three streamlined hulls also create less drag in the water and from this comes another advantage over single-hulled luxury yachts: Under typical cruising conditions trimarans use 40% less power, thereby reducing running costs as well as fuel consumption.

The interior arrangement needed to be modified on the later WHITE RABBIT trimaran as the Owner – who had a cabin in the centre hull where the majority of the engineering was also housed – wanted noise to be limited, and to reach this goal he gave Echo Yachts free reign to explore alternative solutions. As a result, recorded sound levels in the lower deck Master suite were at just 40db while cruising at 13 knots, and noise levels were even quieter on the decks above.

White Rabbit – Exterior

Four Caterpillar C32 generators of 940kW each and two C18 generators of 550kW each are installed on board and use a Kongsberg power management system. Only two gensets are required for a cruising speed of 12 knots, of which 25% (500kW) is used to run on board systems at the same time using 320 litres of fuel an hour. M/Y WHITE RABBIT has a transatlantic-crossing range of 5,000 nautical miles on just 166,200 litres of fuel. In comparison, SOLANDGE has a capacity of 222,000 litres.

The engineering team decided on diesel-electric propulsion with generators placed in the outer hulls to power STADT electric motors in the centre hull, where two Rolls-Royce variable pitch props are situated.

A regular Jane celebrating a personal renaissance after a long-term relationship might commemorate the new era with an ankle tattoo of a spiritual saying. When you're a billionaire, you could do it instead with a $500 million megayacht . 

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made waves in May riding around the roughly 127-meter "Koru," a Māori term that may signify a fresh start, with his reported fiancée Lauren Sanchez. (In 2019, Bezos finalized his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, whom he was married to for 25 years).

Beyond the private planes occupying the hangars of billionaires, yachts have come to symbolize the highly private sites of leisure and networking reserved for the ultra-wealthy .   

Tech billionaires like Bezos, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have all purchased their own mini vacation hubs at sea, decking their boats with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

For those wishing to experience life aboard these multi-million-dollar yachts, some are available to rent out for a few nights or weeks at a time. Late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's yacht can be booked for $2.2 million per week or more, according Bloomberg .

Chartering yachts owned by billionaires like Alphabet cofounder Sergey Brin has previously cost customers anywhere from $773,000 a week to $1.2 million .

It remains to be seen how these vessels will fare against the apparent Orca uprising.  

Take a look at some of the yachts that have been owned by tech billionaires.

A mystery buyer bought a 414-foot superyacht that was once owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $278 million. Allen had the boat, which was named "Octopus," built in 2003 for $200 million. Since the tech billionaire's death in 2018, the boat had been listed for as much as $325 million.

The wealthy can book the yacht for a weekly rate of $2.2 million or more, through the luxury company Camper & Nicholsons, Bloomberg reported last year.

Ellison previously owned a bigger, 454-foot yacht called Rising Sun, which was designed specifically for the CEO in 2005. That yacht reportedly has 82 rooms, a movie theater, a wine cellar, and a basketball court. However, Ellison sold off the Rising Sun to Geffen for a reported $300 million.

Ellison's boat, Musashi, is a sister ship to the yacht of another billionaire, former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert. However, the yacht, named Fountainhead, is often mistaken for belonging to billionaire investor Mark Cuban. "The guy who owns the boat tells everyone that it's mine," Cuban told Page Six in 2016. "It's so crazy ... I don't even own a boat."

Ellison's yacht reportedly influenced the decision of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs to get a boat himself. However, Jobs never set foot on the boat — the yacht was commissioned in 2008, but wasn't completed until 2012, a year after his death.

Metal Shark's New 148-foot 40-Meter Superyacht Catamaran Magnet

A Louisiana shipyard known for its commercial vessels has launched its first aluminum superyacht . Metal Shark recently launched Magnet , a 148-foot tri-deck catamaran that is the first of Metal Shark Yachts ’ 48-meter series. Magnet was built for an owner from Miami who had worked with Metal Shark for the past 10 years.

“The owner had some unique visions for a yacht and we also had some visions,” Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard told Robb Report . “We were able to align those visions with a very new catamaran design.”

Owner George Wallner wanted a “serious, rugged and purpose-built vessel capable of reaching remote, unspoiled destinations that you cannot get to with an airplane.” He also wanted a vessel that could stay in those locations for extended periods, without having to rely on a large crew. “The catamaran format offers ample room and a uniquely stable vision for that,” Wallner said in a statement.

The catamaran hull gives Magnet more inherent stability, plus a significantly longer range than monohull yachts of the same size.  Metal Shark Yachts

Metal Shark worked with Australia-based Incat Crowther, a specialist in offshore catamaran designs, on the hull design. The twin 148-footer, with twin 2,600 hp MTU diesel engines, can reach a top speed of 31 mph. At its most efficient cruise speed of 11.5 mph, the yacht has a range of 12,600 miles, or the equivalent of cruising from the US East Coast to the western shores of Europe and back again—twice.

Beyond its range, Magnet ‘s exterior was designed very differently than others on the market. “When you’re in it, it feels like you’re in a high-rise apartment rather than a mechanical object,” says Allard. “One of our main disruptors is the cat hull. The other is Magnet ‘s visibility—the glass-house feeling you get from the forward portion of the yacht. Allard says the pilothouse and main salon have 330-degree radiuses with no dead spots. “You feel like you’re in the environment around you rather than inside a yacht,” he says. “It really ups the game.”

Because it’s a catamaran, the interior has inherently more deck space than a monohull yacht of a similar size, while Magnet also has a submersible stern platform and aft-deck crane to launch and retrieve the yacht’s toys, tenders and any cargo.

The military-style exterior also gives a sense of its builder’s commercial roots. The stern has a submersible swim platform and crane for deploying the tenders and toys.  Metal Shark Yachts

Magnet ‘s interior is currently being outfitted in Fort Lauderdale, with original artwork and décor. Allard says it will look more informal than other yachts its size, mostly because the owner wants to enjoy the surrounding views through the glass panels and not be encumbered with a heavy, formal interior. The twin hulls will create abundant space for crew quarters, a wine cellar and supply refrigeration for long-distance journeys.

The upper three decks are reserved for the owners and guests. The top-level sundeck has al-fresco dining areas, bar with refrigerator and icemaker and a forward-looking flybridge for sunset views. With 4,300 square feet of interior space, Magnet has a master suite, VIP cabin and three guest cabins.

Allard says the Metal Shark Yachts line can be fully customized for each owner. The builder also introduced the M30 (30 meters or 100 feet) and M70 (70 meters or 231 feet) in its new superyacht line.

“ Magnet ’s chiseled lines were inspired by our military patrol vessels,” says Allard. “The angular brown gives the yacht an imposing look, but it also shields the windows from the sun.” Allard added that this new superyacht style will “maximize the yachting experience by minimizing maintenance concerns.”

Lazzarini’s Swan-Shaped Mega Yacht Concept

The exciting new megayacht concept from  Lazzarini Design Studio  will turn some heads as the swan-like body sails across the water.

The 137m superyacht is shaped like a swan and boasts a detachable head that can be used as a separate boat. 

The enormous bird-shaped yacht is named AVANGAURDIA, which means ‘vanguard’ in English.

As the name suggests, the vessel leads the way in cutting-edge marine design.

Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini penned the ambitious design.  

The design company, based in Rome, has delivered on several innovative beings in the past few years, including flying cars, an amphibious catamaran named  PAGARUS , and much more.

However, the waterbird-inspired mega yacht may be the most outlandish and innovative of the company’s designs.

The massive yacht is split into five decks and can accommodate up to 60 sea goers.

There is potential for even more guests when the yacht is dockside.

As for sleeping arrangements, the yacht can sleep up to 24 guests, 12 staff, and ten crew members. 

There are many toys on board the ship.

There are two helicopters, which can be found on the top level, with two helicopter hangars.

Lazzarini’s innovative design, the jet capsules, is located aft. 

An entire haul of supercars is also found on the superyacht, thanks to an expansive garage.

The yacht boasts many areas for socializing and sunbathing for the 60 guests, including a swimming pool and a jacuzzi.

The exterior of the yacht features flowing lines and curves that reflect the silhouette of a swan on the water.

The head of the swan is a control tower and acts like a brain for the vessel. 

The inspiration for the head comes from 1970s Japanese manga.

It also doubles as a 16m cruiser that is perfect for daytime trips around the water.

A second control point on board will operate the boat while the head is used for a daytime jaunt across the water.

Like a real-life swan in the water, the head of the yacht that houses the control tower is perched on a flexible neck.

The neck uses a fulcrum to give it a full range of movement and lower the head into the water from its crow’s neck perch. 

The head floating in the air while the vessel is at anchor cuts an impressive image.

When the ship is underway, the head lowers to the middle of the megayacht to help steer the vessel in the right direction.

The lowered head is exactly like a swan nestling its head into its feathers.

Specifications

The jet capsules that are located at the vessel’s rear can be used for increased propulsion.

Lazzarini has developed several innovative water transportation, and the jet capsules are just one amongst many.  

The watercraft is fully customizable to the smallest detail and can serve as a private vessel for up to 20 passengers.

The egg-shaped mini-jet cruiser can be connected to the rear deck for extra auxiliary propulsion or disconnected and work independently to cruise people around the waters.

The swan’s power comes from the twin electric side engine and a central MTU Roll’s Royce engine.

This setup has the potential to push the yacht to a cruising speed of about 18 knots.

It remains just a concept at this stage, but the design studio says it could become a reality as soon as an investor is ready to commit to the concept.

The design company is confident that the yacht can be built and would require a $500 million investment from a potential buyer.

When Lazzarini was asked why he chose the concept of a Swan for AVANGUARDIA, he answered that he finds nature to be a source of inspiration because of its innate perfection and that the swan is the very definition of elegance and grace. 

The swan-shaped yacht is the first of six animal-shaped watercraft concept yachts that Lazzarini has presented.

The  PRODIGIUM  is a monolith-inspired vessel that looks like a shark rising out of the water.

The yacht supersedes the AVANGUARDIA in size, measuring in at an enormous 153m.

The vessel will be the largest superyacht on the water if ever built.

The PAGARUS is another innovative design from the studio company.

The catamaran will have the ability to scuttle out of the water like a crab.

Lazzarini noticed a growing space in the industry for luxury off-the-grid vessels and designed a vessel to meet that need.

The PAGARUS, the Latin word for crab, was initially designed for military applications.

Magnet: A 48m floating New York loft with the capability of an extreme explorer

Michael Vogelsang, the captain of Magnet , has seen a thing or two in his career and is not easily impressed. But when he got a first glimpse of his new charge at the Metal Shark yard in Franklin, Louisiana, at the end of a crisp and sunny winter day, he was blown away. “We flew into Lafayette, took a nice car ride and got in at dusk into Franklin; [ Magnet ] was silhouetted by the sun, and I just kind of went, Wow!” he recalls. It’s easy to see why. During a rare stint at a dock in Miami Beach, as the crew prepare for a trip to the Bahamas, I go to look at the catamaran I have chased for a couple of years after hearing various rumours of its construction. A catamaran of this magnitude, coming out of a shipyard in rural Louisiana known for its speedy, reliable navy craft – this I had to see. And Magnet does not disappoint.

The spaces on board are unrivalled for a sub-50-metre yacht, with its beam of 11.8 metres, 3.6 metres clearance over the water thanks to a deep tunnel between two narrow hulls with near-vertical entry, a hydraulic platform to haul the 5.4 metres Novurania RIB tender, three decks with high ceilings, large windows and an open layout, plus a sundeck. It can – and has – welcomed up to 120 guests for a dockside party.

Magnet , Metal Shark’s first M48, results from the vision of the boat’s owner, George Wallner, an experienced and hands-on yachtsman who does not like to spend time in marinas if he can avoid it. What he had in mind was a modern New York loft with the capability of an extreme explorer – one that could go slow and steady over long distances and outrun bad weather.

On that latter count, it did not take long for the boat to be put to the test. In the dog days of summer 2020, as two storms built over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and threatened the Louisiana coast, he made up his mind that the time was up.

“I called the yard and I said, ‘Finished or not, we need to take the boat,’” he says. “We got everything ready and just took off and went to Corpus Christi [in Texas]. It was not a delivery, it was more like an escape,” he says with his dry sense of humour. From Texas, it was a straight shot across the gulf to Key West, with a stop in the Tortugas for a dive, and up to Miami, a 1,000-plus-nautical-mile shakedown cruise, with sprints at 20 knots.

It was only Magnet’ s first brush with tropical weather during an active hurricane season. Three months later, Magnet had to outrun a storm that tracked dangerously close to Miami’s shores. “We went to Cape Canaveral, 120 miles up the coast; it got rough, that gave us our first taste of how a catamaran handles rough seas,” Volgelsang says.

“You see these stools?” asks the owner, pointing to a row of six black seats with backrests perched on stainless-steel feet in the boat’s huge open salon. “We were out in the Bahamas for a month and prior to that when we went to Cape Canaveral, these things never got tied down, they never fell over. We had seas that were bending the stanchions.”

The motion he observes is quite different from his other boat, a 28.6 metre Lyman Morse . “A catamaran does not roll like a monohull, it’s about half as much of a roll but the movement is more abrupt; it has a different kind of motion, and it takes some getting used to,” the owner says. To compensate for the motion in different directions, the boat has a stabilising system by Naiad. “We have Active Ride Control, it’s these big trim tabs that oppose the pitching and, to some extent, the rolling. The other thing is there is not much flare in these bows. The idea with this boat is that you go through the wave, you don’t try to climb on it because if you climb on it you are going to fall off it, especially at speed – and this is a fast boat. We cruise at 20 knots day in and day out, and I am talking in two and a half metre waves.”

Although he built Magnet with a Pacific cruise in mind, it works out well in the Bahamas too, where he likes to dive right off the big boat. “We like to hang out. Many of the good dive spots are rolly anchorages in a monohull, but [now] where we dive we can stay out for the night; we don’t have to move to a bay and hide. And we travel on bad-weather days. When the wind is blowing is when we travel, so we don’t waste a good-weather day for travelling. That’s a game changer,” he says. So is the boat’s speed.

“I have a lot of friends who are not adventurous with their boats because they have to spend a day sailing [to their destination] or need an airport,” he says. No such worry with Magnet . She is fast, with a top speed of 27 to 28 knots, and is a model of efficiency at lower speeds. At 9.5 knots, the engines and generators go through 12 gallons of fuel, about 14 gallons at 10 knots and about 17 at 11 knots, meaning with the capacity to carry 29,000 gallons and twin MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls, she’s got a lot of range. “We can go from Panama to Australia, no problem,” Wallner says.

A lot of that, of course, is down to the naval architecture and construction. Built in welded aluminium, Magnet is strong but relatively light, at least compared to a displacement yacht in steel and aluminum.

The shipyard has a competent in-house engineering team but works with outside companies as well and tapped a naval architecture firm with a proven track record in fast catamarans. “We hired well-known catamaran designer Incat Crowther to handle the naval architecture. While the hull was new for the project, it drew from other similar Incat-designed craft,” says Chris Allard, co-owner and CEO of Metal Shark, which delivered Magnet , its first private vessel of this magnitude, in August 2020.

Established in 1986 as Gravois Aluminum Boats, the yard switched to the more evocative Metal Shark name in 2004. It has since built multiple recreational fishing boats and “a fair amount of yacht tenders.” Its core business is delivering boats to the US Coast Guard, the US Navy and other military clients around the world – and, Allard says, “everything from foil-assist catamaran fishing boats to high-speed catamaran passenger ferries, including 22-passenger vessels for the NYC Ferry system.”

This is precisely what attracted the owner, who knew Allard – a naval architect by training – well, and has enjoyed chatting with him about boats over the years. “I wanted a very strong hull and Metal Shark builds for the military and they really know how to weld,” he says.

He had a very good idea of what his goals were. Because he intends to spend a lot of time on board, he wanted what usually goes with this type of ambition – space and good views.

Wallner, who has owned boats for many years, starting with a 13 metre Buddy Davis, has built two with the American yard Lyman Morse. He still owns his 28.6 metre Electra . “Great boat,” he says, “but if you want to spend time on board, a cabin still is a cabin, and I wanted a bedroom. And instead of a saloon, I wanted a living room. And I wanted this,” he says, extending his arm toward the large panes of glass surrounding the space on all sides. “You can see where you are going. And the doors open fully and all the windows open. Instead of hiding in an air-conditioned space, you are in an open environment.”

How much glass is on board? “Literally tons. Many tons,” Allard says. “The front windows are more than 1.5in thick and weigh nearly 1,000 pounds each – we only broke one.” Diamond Sea Glaze of Vancouver, Canada, provided the tempered safety glass. Also from Canada is young designer Ryan Wynott, who has worked closely with Metal Shark for several years and helped translate sketches made on paper napkins into reality. “It’s pretty mind-blowing as an object, even before it moves,” he says.

“The owner had a vision and significantly formed ideas but gave the designers and the yard latitude to take that vision and build on it,” Allard says. “We spent almost two years, working collaboratively, in design before going forward with the build. It was truly an amazing experience.”

“The superstructure boasts strong similarities to other Metal Shark products, with chiseled and angular lines that are part of our signature rugged appearance,” he continues. The boat is faired and painted (a grey Awlgrip) with a nice finish on the superstructure. The hull sides are purposefully left a bit rougher. Teakdecking Systems installed synthetic decks, so you can step on board with shoes on and no one will faint. The owner wants the boat to be handled by few crew (currently it’s the captain plus three) and that’s part of the rationale for all choices made on board.

Inside, the owner did not want anything overtly luxurious. That fresh air flowing through the open doors and windows does not play nice with delicate fabrics and finishes.

The shipyard worked with American outfitter Westhoff Interiors to deliver a modern, easy-to-maintain interior that’s ready for anything – no marble, no carpets (except for a few small rugs), no parquet flooring nor wood veneer, few frills. With a glass-enclosed staircase leading to the bridge deck and the two VIP suites and low-profile furniture, the eye wanders freely through a large open space and settles on the scenery. The dining table on the main deck says a lot about Magnet . Its glass top reveals working gears that allow it to expand or retract according to need. It’s a perfect choice for a boat filled with glass and built for a man who will not only take the wheel of the yacht but knows how to replace faulty electrical parts.

Wallner, an electrical engineer and inventor, has well-informed opinions about software and the accessibility of components. His company Atlantitech built a lot of the boat’s electrical parts, and he has designed the control system that manages the boat. Fully equipped (including a sonar, FLIR cameras and bow thruster), Magnet is self-sufficient and able to tackle long passages, just like her owner wanted. Long-term plans include exploration in the Pacific. As for Metal Shark, the shipyard has enjoyed this project well enough that it has developed a whole line based on the M48 concept, knowing that out there in the world, more people are looking for a platform for adventure.
