How Much Does Boat Upholstery Cost?

Certified CFA

Replacing or repairing boat upholstery can seem expensive, but it is an essential part of maintaining your marine interior. Investing in quality marine-grade materials and professional installation will pay off in the long run.

This guide covers everything you need to know about boat upholstery costs, from DIY projects to hiring a pro.

Here are the key points to remember when budgeting and planning for boat upholstery replacement:

  • Expect to spend  $500-800 on average per seat ,  $1000-2000 for more complex helm seats , and $8000+ for larger interior refurbishment projects .
  • Using  high-quality marine-grade materials  and  experienced professional installers  provides maximum longevity and functionality.
  • Maintenance costs are reduced when boat upholstery is  cleaned and conditioned regularly  to prevent premature damage.
  • Even DIY projects require  specialized tools and skills  for marine upholstery work to get professional-looking results.
  • Protect your investment and comfort by  reupholstering upholstery before it gets excessively worn .

To give you a general idea of cost ranges, here are some typical prices:

  • Reupholstering a single  helm seat  or  boat seat bottom cushion  runs  $500-800  on average.
  • For a  full boat seat  including the bottom, backrest, and side bolsters expect  $1,200-$1,500 .
  • Larger L-shaped sofa seats  can cost  $1,800-$2,500 to reupholster .
  • Helm seat covers including headrests, armrests, and storage compartments cost  $1,000-$2,000 .
  • For a complete  boat interior refurbishment with all seats, berths, headliners, and accent panels replaced, plan on spending $8000-15,000  or more depending on the size and complexity of the space.

Marine upholstery costs $100-200 per hour for professional labor. Materials then add $15-100+ per yard depending on the type. Even a small boat likely needs 10+ yards of material.

These price ranges assume high-quality marine-grade upholstery materials are used. The costs can be higher for exotic leathers or specialty fabrics. Simple vinyls or DIY labor reduce costs.

BoatinGuru mentions that Custom Home Style Upholstery’s shop rate is around $80 per hour for boat seat re-upholstery. The cost of marine vinyl from “New York Boat Canvas” was approximately $21.49 per yard for one type and $19.67 per yard for another type. The total cost of reupholstering boat seats can be upwards of $80 per hour for labor alone if done professionally.

Begin Boating states that boat seat reupholstery can cost upwards of $80 per hour for labor at a professional shop, in addition to the cost of marine vinyl chosen. The article emphasizes the importance of considering the value of the boat when determining the level of materials and workmanship desired.

Maintaining Boat Upholstery

Beyond just making your boat look nice, reupholstering worn or damaged seats, berths, headliners and interior panels serves some key functions:

  • Protects underlying framework  – Deteriorating upholstery allows water intrusion leading to rot and corrosion of wood and metal.
  • Provides water resistance  – Marine-grade materials are designed to withstand wetness and humidity.
  • Adds comfort  – New foam and fabrics make seating more comfortable and supportive.
  • Improves safety  – Securely fastened upholstery reduces slipping and improves security in rough water.
  • Increases value  – A refreshed interior keeps your boat attractive for resale.
  • Enhances experience  – Comfortable and functional upholstery allows you to better enjoy time spent aboard.

Regular upholstery replacement and repair should be part of any boat owner’s long-term maintenance plan and budget.

Factors That Determine Boat Upholstery Costs

Several important factors affect the costs of reupholstering part or all of a boat’s interior:

  • Boat size  – The total square footage and number of seating areas determine how much material is required. Bigger boats cost more overall.
  • Seat size and quantity  – More large L-shaped sofas or helm seats add cost versus just cushions.
  • Labor hourly rate  – This can range from $60-150 per hour based on location and the upholsterer’s reputation and experience.
  • Complexity of project  – Simple cushions cost less than intricate helm seats and headliners. Expect custom details and shapes to add labor time.
  • Material types  – Marine vinyls cost less than specialty fabrics or exotic leathers. Custom patterns cost extra too.
  • Required repairs  – Rotted framework and water damage add repair costs before new upholstery can be installed.
  • Accessibility  – Harder to access areas mean more labor time. Removing deck hardware to access beneath may add costs.

Get an itemized quote accounting for all these factors before starting a major upholstery project. Expect a range depending on potential issues revealed during the work.

Types of Boat Upholstery Materials

Choosing the right marine upholstery involves tradeoffs between aesthetics, durability, maintenance, and cost:

Marine-Grade Vinyl

  • Cost –   $20-50 per yard
  • Durability – With proper care can last 5-10 years. Most water-resistant choice.
  • Maintenance  – Easy to clean by wiping and using vinyl protectants.
  • Aesthetic – Allows a wide range of color choices and patterns.
  • Cost –   $50-100 per yard
  • Durability  – Will patina and wear over time but can last many years with proper care.
  • Maintenance  – Requires frequent cleaning and conditioning to avoid drying out.
  • Aesthetic – Provides an upscale, elegant look but fewer color options.

Marine Fabrics

  • Cost –   $15-30 per yard
  • Durability – Varies widely. Look for UV, mildew, and stain-resistant treatments.
  • Maintenance  – Usually machine washable but may require re-treatment of protections.
  • Aesthetic – A wide range of patterns and textures available for soft, welcoming look.

Choosing the Right Upholstery Materials

There are a few key factors to weigh when selecting marine upholstery materials:

Usage – How often is the boat used? All-day saltwater fishing trips versus occasional light duty?

Care abilities – Will the materials be properly cleaned and maintained?

Aesthetic goals – Formal and elegant or fun and sporty?

Budget – Premium materials cost more upfront but deliver longevity and value.

Environmental factors – Will upholstery be exposed to intense sunlight and humidity?

Consult with your upholsterer for advice on fabrics and leathers appropriate for your climate and boating style. They can steer you towards long-lasting, easy-care choices suited to your needs.

Finding the Right Boat Upholstery Provider

Getting your upholstery work done right means finding an experienced marine specialist. Here are tips for choosing a quality boat upholstery provider:

  • Search for “marine upholstery” specifically  – Not just auto and furniture pros. Look for boat-specific examples.
  • Ask detailed questions about materials, construction methods, warranties, timeframes, and costs.
  • Compare portfolios to see if previous work matches your style and complexity needs.
  • Check reviews and references  to confirm quality craftsmanship and service.
  • Get quotes from 3-4 upholsterers  to compare pricing and offerings.
  • For complete refits , work with a designer on a full interior decor plan.

Going with the cheapest option often leads to disappointment. Experienced marine upholsterers are worth the investment.

Caring for Boat Upholstery

Proper routine care keeps your boat’s upholstery looking fresh and maximizes its lifespan:

  • Vinyls  – Wash with mild detergent. Use vinyl cleaners and protectants regularly.
  • Fabrics  – Vacuum frequently. Spot clean stains quickly. Most can be removed and washed or steam cleaned occasionally.
  • Leather – Clean with a leather cleaner 1-2 times per month. Condition frequently with a leather protector.
  • All types  – Immediately fix any loose stitching to avoid bigger problems.

And be sure to:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure by using sunbrella covers when not in use.
  • Check for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration at least annually.
  • Thoroughly clean upholstery at the start and end of each boating season.

Following manufacturer care guidelines closely extends the lifespan of your upholstery and protects your investment.

Final Words

Choosing the right materials for your climate and boating needs, proper installation, and caring for upholstery will provide many years of enhanced experiences aboard your boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth reupholstering a boat.

Reupholstering a boat is usually worth the investment, as worn-out upholstery can detract from functionality and enjoyment on board. It also protects the underlying framework from water damage. Higher quality materials and professional installation provide long-lasting results.

Can I reupholster my own boat?

With some DIY skills and the right tools and materials, simple upholstery projects like seat cushions and headrests can be managed by boat owners.

More complex jobs involving intricate shapes, headliners, and custom details are best left to experienced marine upholsterers. Start small to evaluate your abilities.

What is the most expensive part of owning a boat?

While the initial purchase price is steep, ongoing maintenance and repairs make up the most costly part of boat ownership. Two major expenses are proper winter storage and repowering the engine every 2000 hours or so.

Upholstery repair and replacement is another significant recurring cost to maintain comfort and functionality.

My grandpa wants to visit the lake with the family, which is why I’m thinking of getting the boat fixed before using it. Since the upholstery is worn out for some reason, it’s great that you provided the average cost of repair which is around $55 per hour to $150 or more. Hopefully, I can find a boat upholstery service nearby.

Robert Hogward

If there are any damages present due to mildew, UV rays, or the elements, this also adds up to the total expenses. After all, the professional upholstery service may need to refurbish the seat first before proceeding with it. Either that or you can take care of the damage yourself, which should require a vinyl repair kit. :)

Great article. These guides are very useful for me. I have done a project about reupholstering boat seats. It’s very easy, and my boat has a new seat.

If your boat seats are still comfortable despite slight damage, you may purchase a repair kit containing restorative supplies. When the need arises, you may conduct boat reupholstering.

Guide to Boat Upholstery Renovation

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • December 17, 2021

1977 Witchcraft runabout

Re-upholstering a boat exceeds the skill level of most DIY boaters. For this kind of project, most of us need the help of a qualified marine upholstery shop. This is especially true for a project that encompasses the total replacement of the upholstery, a task that includes the engineering and fabrication of the upholstery framework, as well as design and crafting of the fabric coverings.

Such was the case as we entered the final phase of a complete restoration of a 1977 outboard-powered 17-foot Witchcraft runabout, a project that started with gutting the interior, including the original, but now rotted, seating, side and transom panels, and other upholstery parts. For guidance on how to proceed with replacing the upholstery, we turned to Sunbrella Horizon, which offers a broad line marine vinyl upholstery fabrics. Bill McDaniel, marine market manager for Sunbrella Horizon, offered these tips.

Panel removed from boat

Quality Shop

As mention before, you’ll need assistance from a marine upholstery shop. But how do you find one?  “A good place to start in identifying a marine upholstery fabricator is to ask local boating organizations or your marina to provide recommended partners,” McDaniel says. “Another option is to check in with the boat manufacturer or dealer.” While these sources may not always be able to do the work themselves, they can likely point you in the direction of a trusted partner shop or local fabricator.

“Also, don’t forget online resources including social media and review websites such as Yelp where you can find testimonials and past experiences from other customers,” McDaniel adds. In our case, we chose SoCal Upholstery in Montclair, California. While the shop was about 40 miles away, it came highly recommended by a number of boat dealers, as well as local boat builders, for quality design and fabrication.

Key Questions

Before work starts on your boat upholstery project, it’s important to ask the right questions to be sure the fabricator understands your goals and you know exactly what you to expect, McDaniel points out. He suggests start with questions such as:

  • Can you walk me through your fabrication process?
  • Are you able to assist with design?
  • How long do you estimate it will take to complete the work?
  • Have you worked on this type of craft before?
  • What type of information is most helpful for me to provide throughout the process?
  • Do you provide any type of warranty on the work?

Following the discussion, request a written or documented estimate and ask questions about what is included in the quote and what factors could affect it before you sign off on the project, McDaniel says.

Boat gutted

Framework: Re-use or Replace?

Whether or not the existing upholstery framework can be used will depend primarily on the reason for re-upholstery and the overall state of the boat. “It also may depend on which part of the boat you are updating,” McDaniel explains. “In many cases, it’s possible to apply new marine fabrics on an existing frame; however, you will want to be sure there is no damage or underlying issues.”

It’s important to have the framework inspected by an expert, so be sure to bring this up with your fabricator. Just like a home or building, having the right foundation is essential for long-term use and enjoyment. In our case, we decide that the old wood frame work was 45 years old and rotting, so we decided have the shop build all new frames.

New plywood seats

Frame Material

The material used for upholstery framework will depend on the type of boat, the craft’s age, the original materials, and your fabricator’s preferences. Framing the structure for a captain’s chair or helm chair is a different application than framing for main seating areas, such as the bow area. Typically, specialty woods like mahogany or teak are used for captain’s or helm chair structures. “Be sure to discuss your options with your fabricator partner before starting the project,” McDaniel advises. In our case, we chose plywood, which was coated with resin after construction to prevent water damage in the future.

Staple Supply

“Quality staples play an important part in marine upholstery work, alongside a strong framing material, quality fabric, the right foam cushioning and durable thread and adhesives,” McDaniel points out. In our case, we asked the fabricator to use stainless-steel staples to help prevent corrosion.

Foam glued down

Colors and Design

Most fabricator include the design and color selection as part of their prices. “To make sure you’re happy with the outcome, it’s important to brief your shop about the goals of your project and the desired look for your boat,” McDaniel says. “Inspirational photos are especially helpful in providing a starting point.” Don’t forget to share the ideal look and feel for your boat seating along with examples of how you commonly use your boat, such as fishing or entertaining.

You will also want to discuss your goals for the entire look of the boat and where you want coordinating materials to be used, McDaniel adds. “For example, Sunbrella offers most marine fabric in matching colorways, meaning it’s easy to coordinate new upholstery fabric with existing fabric you plan to keep or other fabric on the boat, such as a Bimini top,” he points out. Using your input as well as the background on your boat and their expertise, your fabricator will be able to make smart fabric recommendations. From there you can work together to fine-tune the design before work begins, as we did with our restoration project.

Upholstery installed

Fabric Brand

Should you specify the marine vinyl fabric brand or trust the fabricator to select it? “You and your fabricator should work together to select the right fabrics for your boat,” says McDaniel. “Like any good partnership, it’s a team effort. We always advise boaters to lean on their fabricators for recommendations but also ask questions and explore options before making a purchase decision.

“Fabricators take great pride in their work and the process should be fun,” he adds. “Treat them as a partner, get involved and you’ll get great counsel and see great results.”

Fabric Quality

When considering a marine upholstery vinyl fabric, boaters should think about quality, longevity, design and support, according to McDaniel. “Investing in a high-quality fabric will give you the peace of mind to enjoy your boat upholstery without worrying about harsh marine conditions or potential damages or spills,” he explains. The investment upfront means longer lasting boat seating, and limiting the need for costly replacements that might put your boat out of commission for long stretches of time.”

McDaniel also points out the need to care for and maintain any marine upholstery. “Make sure the fabric you select comes with support after purchase, including care and cleaning resources and comprehensive warranties,” he says. “Sunbrella fabrics are the most trusted and preferred choice and are backed by the most comprehensive warranties in the industry.

“For example, Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl is backed by a five-year warranty that covers replacement fabric and labor costs, along with a three-year warranty against bacterial pink staining.”

Newly upholstered seat

Marine Foam

When it comes to upholstery foam, good fabricators typically have a few types of foam on hand in a variety of densities to be sure they’re using the best material for the job, McDaniel says. These foams include polyurethane, Dryfast and closed cell foams. “Foam is an important element for seating, providing support and flexibility allowing for all-day comfort,” he explains. “Ask your fabricator about the foam type and density they recommend for your boat and why.”

Thread Choices

Polyester, nylon and monofilament threads each have unique benefits that could make them the right fit for your craft, and good fabricators know which to use, as well as where and when. “Like fabric, thread serves a functional and stylistic role,” McDaniel reveals. “Talk to your fabricator about contrasting thread colors, piping styles and patterns they can sew into your seating for an even more custom look.”

Ultimately, re-upholstery isn’t something you’ll likely do often, and the process does take time, McDaniel points out. “It’s important to start the conversation with your fabricator and plan for the upgrades and an ideal time for work to begin, as you’ll be without your boat,” he adds.

Taking the renovated boat out

Right Attitude

“View the improvements on your boat as an investment rather than an expense, and select quality materials and crafts people to work on your boat,” McDaniel says. “This is an exciting upgrade for years of comfort and memories and taking good care of your boat now will ensure it takes good care of you and your passengers.”

How Much to Reupholster Boat Seats – Reading This May Help You Save More

Written by J. Harvey / Fact checked by S. Numbers

how much to reupholster boat seats

While there are numerous factors to consider when calculating, according to our research boat upholstery repair cost, the national average in the US ranges between $600 to $3,500. This estimate only takes into consideration the costs paid by boat owners in recent years, 2020 to 2021, to be exact.

The reupholster boat seats cost is dictated by factors like the type of fabric or grade of vinyl, your location, the repair service you work with, and the number of seats. Read on to know how much to reupholster boat seats and how most boaters penny-pinch when reupholstering their vessels’ seats.

Table of Contents

Expect To Pay More If You Choose A Full Reupholstering Job

Take note of factors that increase price variability, damage will bump the price further, 1. consider doing some of the steps yourself., 2. choose a cheaper but no less marine-ready fabric., 3. prioritize local family-owned upholstery shops., 4. opt for cheaper yet still top-notch services abroad..

Marine-grade boat seat upholstery typically connotes high-quality, long-lasting materials like vinyl, polyester, and artificial leather. Most use vinyl and, naturally, they’re not cheap. Reupholstered boat seats tend to cost more than their dining room chair counterparts if done by a professional for this reason.

In an answer to the topic on the Asking Lot website, the reupholster boat seats price per square yard of vinyl fabric is between $40 to $60. It also uses a layback seat job using existing hardware as an example. The entire service cost only ranges between $600 to $1,200 since it didn’t involve purchasing any new equipment.

According to a 2021 discussion on Cruisers Forum, opting for a complete replacement of upholstery and cushions cost one boater exactly $3,500. They also noted that since fabrics vary in price, this total could increase or decrease based on that one aspect. Of course, this is always relative to the number of seats on board.

reupholster-boat-seats-cost

For one, in the US, professional reupholstering services charge by the hour. BeginBoating.com, a blog run by an avid boater who has done several reupholstering jobs in the past, stated that professional services charge at least $80 per hour. This is especially true for projects where you want plenty of seat customizations and generally high-value boats over $8,000.

On the other hand, according to HowMuchIsIt.org, hourly rates can go from as low as $55 per hour to $150 per hour. They’ve also prepared a helpful table for every kind of reupholstering job for seats you may avail of with its respective average cost. One caveat, though: their figures haven’t been updated since 2018, so expect these costs to be a little higher now.

Incidentally, Begin Boating has also noted that marine vinyl prices can dip from $20 to $15 for every yard. Some other types of specialty vinyl can balloon that figure to $100 per yard. If you want to dive deeper into what factors and steps dictate reupholstering cost, with a sample invoice.

If there are any damages present due to mildew, UV rays, or the elements, this also adds up to the total expenses. After all, the professional upholstery service may need to refurbish the seat first before proceeding with it. Either that or you can take care of the damage yourself, which should require a vinyl repair kit.

With all things considered, these facts should give you an idea of why there’s so much variability when determining the average cost to reupholster a boat. The cost to reupholster pontoon boat seats can be entirely different from the cost of a johnboat’s simply because the latter has fewer vinyl seats to accommodate. And that’s obviously just one factor.

How Much To Reupholster Boat Seat & A Couple Of Proven Tips To Save Money

boat-upholstery-repair-cost

For instance, you can take the time to remove the current upholstery already, which could help decrease service expenses. If you’re recovering boat seats, you can do the initial step of cleaning any tears yourself using rubbing alcohol, for example.

We’re confident that decreasing the required workload will make you more likely to cut costs when dealing with a professional repair service. Do take note that this kind of prep work does require a standard vinyl repair kit.

Here is the detailed guide to reupholstering boat seats for your reference.

Yes, this may seem obvious, but it still has to be said. In fact, you don’t even have to sacrifice or forgo vinyl altogether.

For instance, did you know that there are marine fabrics available that aren’t completely made of vinyl? They choose to combine vinyl with other viable materials like polyester, for example. This way, you still maintain or even increase the durability of the upholstered seats.

Another great tip from The Pricer involves looking for family-owned upholstering services in your area. Not only do they offer various customization options but they tend to have lower rates, too. It’s a given that you’ll do careful research, but it does pay off to be on the lookout for these kinds of stores due to their economic benefits.

There are many high-quality craftsmen and specialty upholsterers in other countries with far more reasonable rates than in the States. Keep this in mind if you’re planning a trip abroad. This is proven in the same above-mentioned Cruisers Forum discussion, where a UK-based boater paid for the full reupholstering of a 42-foot boat for only $1,800.

Ultimately, if you’re aiming for close to perfect results in your boat upholstery, we can’t ignore the value of professional services in this regard. Costs can be summed up by these two points:

  • You let the shop do all the upholstering plus extra work and take the most expensive route.
  • Or, you stick to your specific requirements and avail of the exact services to fulfill them. This, along with the tips we shared here, can save you thousands of dollars.

How Much Does It Cost To Reupholster Boat Seats? – Hire Or DIY

Looking down from above into a Bayliner 1954 fish and ski boat with new upholstery with a green lawn background.

Most boat owners fear the cost of reupholstering their worn boat seats. Every upholstery situation is different, and with some research, it just might no be that bad.

Boat seat reupholstery can be upwards of $80.00 per hour for the labor rate at a professional shop. Then add the cost of your marine vinyl of choice, and things add up quick. However, many boat seats can be recovered by doing it yourself. The cost is directly related to the extent of the damage.

While most people think they can’t DIY the project, most small boat seats can be reupholstered with the use of a home sewing machine. Let’s look at examples of doing it both ways.

Hire A Professional Upholstery Shop

If you have a really nice boat and want the seats to look just as nice as your boat, then you ultimately are going to want a professional upholstery shop to do the work. I have reupholstered several boat seats in the past. These were for boats with a value under approximately $8,000.

When it comes to really nice boats, I would rather pay a professional that does upholstery every day, so I know the seats will be perfect. Not only is their expertise in upholstery better than mine, their equipment for doing the job is much better as well.

As an example, I just took 7 boat seats and a 5′ x 5′ sun deck up to Custom Home Style Upholstery in Bayview Wisconsin. This is after shopping around several upholstery shops. Some were far more expensive, and some were not qualified to do the level of work I wanted done.

As a side note, “I was not provided any discount for owning BeginBoating.com. None of the shops I approached gave any discount to their quotes and were not made aware of my website ownership. After contracting Custom Home Style Upholstery to do the work, I then told them about it”. I am not receiving any compensation for the mention of their business. I mention them because they are fair priced and good at what they do, which provides value to my readers.

In the below video, you’ll see the exact scope of work that was done for a total price of $1,140.00 .

I dropped everything off on March 9th, ordered the material on March 10th from Florida to be shipped direct to them, and I picked up the finished job on March 17th. So in an 8 day turn-around, I am ready to install everything back into my Monterey 268ss.

So why did I order the material myself? Larry let me 🙂 . I ordered the exact marine vinyls I wanted. It was near half the cost by ordering direct. I ordered my marine vinyl from “The Miami Corporation”. My entire order was placed on their website in a matter of minutes. One vinyl was $20.49 per yard and the other was $18.97 per yard.

Using a professional upholstery shop allows you to create virtually any look and feel for your new boat interior. It pretty much comes down to how much you want to spend. If you have a $50,000.00 boat, then you can expect a higher price for doing higher end materials and more detailed workmanship.

Here is a video of my boat after I reinstalled the interior. (Also if you have dirty or moldy upholstery in your boat, you should try cleaning first. I link to a great video and article at the end of this one).

Most of the custom upholstery shops have a high hourly shop rate. Custom Home Style Upholstery’s shop rate at the time of this writing is $80 per hour. They can accomplish a lot more in an hour than you or I can, because they have better tools and experience for doing upholstery work.

A reupholstered sunbed from a Monterey 268ss boat shown in an upholstery shop.

As you can see, there are “pull-downs” in the upholstery and I want those to look even. If those are done wrong, or just a little uneven, it really affects the quality look of the boat. It’s also a lot more noticeable on a large piece such as the sundeck if you have even a small mistake sewing the seams. So I hired it done by professionals.

On boats that have lower value, it may not be worth having a professional upholstery shop do the work. However, you should definitely take the boat seats and get an estimate first. If they are slow at that time and you tell them what you can afford to spend, they just may have a good compromise option for you.

DIY Boat Seat Upholstery

Again, on boats of lesser value (under $8,000.00 in my opinion), you can do pretty nice work as a DIY home upholstery project. If you’re not looking to do multiple upholstery projects, you may not want to spring for a commercial grade sewing machine. If you have a sewing machine, try it first.

You can get used commercial grade sewing machines on Ebay for as little as a couple hundred dollars. I have done several boat upholstery projects and so far I have just used my mother’s sewing machine.

She likes quilting and keeps it set up in her basement. It has had no problems at all sewing marine vinyl. I even get her to do some of the sewing 🙂 . I have dug through all my files to find pictures of a few particular boats that I had reupholstered the seats on. Sadly, I didn’t know I would ever need them again and they are deleted or lost.

Be sure you have a good, clean work space before taking on an upholstery project. You need a solid work table and good lighting to lay out your new vinyl and for reassembly. If you have to make new seat bottoms, use marine grade plywood, Starboard, green treat plywood, or painted plywood.

One of the boats was a 22′ Mirage bowrider that had not been cared for properly and needed interior work. I reupholstered the seats, which had pull downs, and I actually did a really nice job. None of the cushions were bigger than a few feet long. It was a beautiful boat when I was done.

Here is a 1996 Bayliner 1954 Fish & Ski that I did. I had an upholstery friend do the back-to-back seats. They are much better than before, but as you can see, there were some mistakes and puckers in them. Even still, the boat was a hit and sold immediately. Now, I could do them myself, but back then I didn’t have enough experience.

A side by side image showing two differnt views of a Bayliner 1954 fish and ski boat with new upholstery.

The point is, you may not do a perfect job the first try, but with a little instruction, you’ll do just fine. This is why I am including these two videos on how to upholster a boat interior. Save this page and refer back to them as you go through your project.

After watching these two videos, you’ll know what tools you need along with some great techniques to produce a professional results. It’s actually kinda fun to do and the transformation is an amazing value booster.

Upholstery With No Sewing

If sewing is too scary, you could try doing a design that allows for only stapling. This usually works best on the boat’s side panels because they don’t generally have very thick foam to go over. When you don’t want to sew a seam for your cushion corners, you’ll have to put folds in your vinyl at the corners.

This can be done and it actually doesn’t look too bad. I am good with this for side panels, but on boat seat cushions, it does have an issue besides the obvious lower quality look. If your seat foam is 4″ thick, you have two separate pieces of vinyl sitting against each other down that 4″ crease.

Since you don’t join two different vinyls with a seam on the top of the seat, there is nothing stopping food and dirt from going down in the seat between the two vinyls when only stapled at the bottom.

I will make a video showing this technique and place it here, but for now I am putting in another video to give you a rough idea of this staple method. This is just a short video, but this person has other videos showing bigger panels where he cuts the original vinyl for removal.

Don’t do that! It just makes you work harder and the job looks worse in the end. Use each vinyl panel as a separate pattern to trace onto your new vinyl. It saves you from having to figure out the size and shape needed to make the project look right.

Something to consider with using a “No Sew” method of upholstery, is that your seats will not have that defined edge to the cushion. The cushions will have more of a domed shape to them. It works, but it isn’t pretty.

Cost Of Marine Vinyl

The cost of marine vinyl can vary quite a bit. For a good quality solid color vinyl, you can expect to pay $15 to $20 per yard. However you can buy high quality specialty design vinyl at over $100 per yard. It just depends on your choice of material.

I will say though, it really pays to make your boat stand out with a great design and higher end vinyl. Especially when you have to do the entire interior. It is time consuming though, so plan your project for the off season of boating.

A fabric supply store with large rolls of marine vinyl on racks.

Go online and look up “ The Miami Corporation ” for your marine vinyl. Be sure you order samples of your vinyl choices first. Computer monitors are liars, lol. You’ll want to have the actual vinyl in your hands to make final decisions on your boat seat designs.

You can also find marine vinyl on Amazon also, but in this case I do like the great customer service I get from The Miami Corporation. If you end up needing seat foam also, you can get that at either place as well.

Mail Order Custom Boat Seat Covers

So there is another option to taking all your boat seats to a professional upholstery shop, or doing the DYI thing. It is removing your old boat seat vinyl and mailing it out to a shop like CopyCat Upholstery so they can make exact replicas.

If you want to mix things up a bit, you can discuss a new design for your boat’s interior. So you could give very specific design instructions, or tell them a theme idea and let them design based on your theme idea.

First thing you want to do is to take good photos of each section of your boat’s interior. You want to be sure you are getting multiple views, so the upholstery shop can get a good perspective of how each piece matches up to the next. You also want these for yourself so you can reassemble everything correctly when you get your new vinyl covers back.

Basically, you would dismantle your boat interior, and remove the vinyl covers off each piece. You would mark each piece to indicate it’s location in the boat. The best way to do this is to number each piece on a picture of the boat interior. Then mark each vinyl cover with it’s corresponding number to the picture.

You can get a quote right on their website. Simply fill out the form and add a picture of each piece you want done. You will need a rough measurement of each piece as well. Here is their short video explaining what to expect from their process from beginning to end.

This may or may not be the right solution for your boat seats, but at least you can be fully informed before you make a decision. I personally don’t see the potential for a big cost savings with this method.

If I take my boat seats to a professional upholstery shop, the only extra time for them over CopyCat Upholstery, is the time to remove the covers and reinstall them. With CopyCat, I have would have to remove and reinstall the covers as well as box them up and pay shipping charges each way.

Another thing is, who is going to do a better job of fitting the covers back onto the seat bases? Probably the professional upholstery shop. Plus the correct fit and application is going to be guaranteed by the shop. I don’t have to worry about ripping the covers during install or getting wrinkles from mis-application.

I had CopyCat quote the work I had done in the video and they wanted $2,000. I spoke with Custom Home Style Upholstery where the seats were done to adjust for the time for recovers on the bow pieces and I adjusted for the extra vinyl needed.

It still works out to be a $375 savings by taking my boat upholstery business to a professional upholstery shop. Also with this choice, I don’t have to do any of the removal or installation of the covers. Nor do I have to fill out forms or do all the measuring. Besides the fact that my upholstery was done in 8 days!

Also, If your boat vinyl is dirty and has mold or mildew, and that is why you are wanting to replace it, try cleaning it first. You just might save yourself a lot of money and time. Check out my article on cleaning moldy boat vinyl .

I bought my first boat while in high school 1981. I had more hours working on it than using it in the water. I can't count how many boats I've had since, but I really enjoy reviving boats. I've had so many boats that I could never use them all. Once I fix a boat up, I play with it a couple times and sell it. My goal is to use my many years of experience, and help as many people Begin Boating.

Boat Seat Re-Upholstery isn’t as tough as you might think. Boat seats can receive damage from direct sunlight, rain, moisture, water, etc. Re-upholstering is the best way to recover your existing boat seats. Re-upholstery can be cheaper than replacing the entire boat seats, and you can either hire a professional or do it yourself. But please remember, this task requires a lot of patience, efforts and there’s a high chance of ruining the entire project.

The cost of boat seat re-upholstery depends on the size and quantity of seats to repair, and quality of materials used, etc. The price can further increase if changing the padding too. However, merely changing the vinyl will be cheaper.

If you’re unsure about the cost involved in seat re-upholstery, then you’ve reached the right place. This article is a compact guide to the boat seat re-upholstery cost. Keep reading until the end for lots of information!

Boat Seat Re-Upholstery Required Materials

This section lists down the materials required to renew your boat seats. The best way to get the estimated cost involved is to check out the materials’ prices on the e-commerce websites. We’ve taken the references from Amazon USA in this section.

  • Foam sheet/padding

Foam rubber is great for boat seat re-upholstery.

You will install the foam padding on the seat’s structure. These sheets are available in different sizes, and once you start searching, you’ll get confused.

Top-rated fish finders on Amazon

For instance, suppose a 2″ x 24″ x 72″ foam sheet costs $34.99, and a 3″ x 24″ x 72″ foam sheet costs about $39.99. Which one will you choose? Also, remember that these are just two variants. What if there were hundreds of choices for the variant?

Here’s the quick and simple solution- 2 x 24 x 72 = 3456 cubic inch which costs $34.99

All you have to do is divide the price by the total volume, which will be: ($34.99 / 3456)

It will give you the price per cubic inch , which will be $0.01

Finding the cost per cubic inch won’t take long once you get familiar with this formula. With this, you can filter out the cheapest foam sheets available.

Now let’s calculate the required padding. First of all, measure the length and the width of the areas on which you’ll install the foam sheet (seat bottom and the bench back). Secondly, decide the thickness of the foam sheet. Generally, a 2″ or a 3″ thick padding is good enough, but you can opt for the thicker ones if you feel so.

Screws are the best option to keep the foam in place. Alternatively, you can glue them with the structure, but that’s inefficient in the long run. Since you’ll be restoring the seats, it’s entirely possible that the seat structure already has holes for them. Please remember that the screws for this purpose will be different from the regular hardware screws. These will be similar to thumbtacks or something like that.

You can find a decent screw set on Amazon USA . Opting for a screw set comes with other necessary items, such as snaps and sockets. Ideally, a 150-pcs set contains snaps, sockets, and screws (50-pcs each).

Choose vinyl very carefully! Ensure that the vinyl you choose is suited for boat seats—the boat market flourishes with thousands of vinyl varieties. Many come with an extra layer of thin padding (and will cost slightly more), while some are regular vinyl sheets. If opting for leather sheets, ensure that it’s the leather you want.

Leather comes in different varieties- one made from animal skin (the genuine leather), and one is artificial leather. Many sellers sell synthetic leather in the name of genuine leather. The natural leather won’t catch fire easily if you don’t know.

The best way to test it out is to light a matchstick and put the sheet on fire for 2-3 seconds (only if buying from the local market and the seller lets you do that). The genuine leather won’t burn!

Let’s bring the old mathematical formula to find the cheapest vinyl sheet. Suppose a 2″ x 3″ vinyl sheet costs $13.99 and another 5″ x 3″ sheet costs $16.99 . Which one will you choose?

Find the cost per square inch by dividing the price by the total area , i.e. ($13.99 / 6) = $2.33 per square inch.

  • Upholstery Repair Kit

A typical upholstery repair kit includes the following items:

Top-rated boat seats on Amazon

  • Stitching needles
  • Thread cord
  • Sewing needles
  • Stitching awl
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing thimble
  • Yarn scissors

You can purchase one repair kit for as low as $12.99. However, the threads’ quality is questionable. Also, the number of lines included in the set may not be sufficient. So, to stay on the safe side, purchase threads separately.

  • Nylon Thread

Nylon thread is considered excellent for stitching leather sheets. It’s strong, durable, and, best of all, affordable. It comes in several colors and costs as low as $13 ( length: 1250 yards ).

  • Other optional Items

Perhaps you can consider procuring the following optional items to make your task a lot easier:

  • Handheld sewing machine ($7.99 to $29.99)
  • Upholstery stapler ($20.99 to $38.95)

Things To Consider Before Upholstering

Boat seat interior and exterior upholstery can really liven up the space. Find boat upholstery tips at Boating.Guide.

There are a couple of things you might want to consider before getting started with upholstering. For instance, “ is it worth upholstering” or maybe “ should you hire a professional or do it yourself” etc. Read this section for more such points.

Are The Seats Worth Re-upholstering?

Ensure that the seat framework isn’t rusty (if it’s a metallic framework). Alternatively, if it’s a wooden framework, inspect whether or not the wood is in good condition and worth reupholstering. Secondly, check out the prices of new boat seats. If the new seats cost nearby the repairing cost, you might consider replacing them instead of reupholstering them.

Decide Whether To Hire A Pro Or Do It Yourself

Professionals can do the work efficiently in less time. That way, you can save yourself from lots of trouble. Leave it to them if you can’t afford to take the day off from work to revive your boat seats.

However, if doing so, you must conduct market research and get quotations from different professionals instead of sticking to just one or two upholsters. Several upholsters will quote different prices, out of which you can choose the most appropriate one.

Don’t Fall For The Cheapest Quote

You might find a decent upholster offering you the cheapest quote. Always remember that the cheap upholsters substitute the stitching and sewing work with glue for cost-cutting and getting the job done faster. Glue can discolor the fabric, will dry out, and fail quickly, hence inefficient in the long run. If hiring a professional, clean the air and instruct the workers not to use glue.

Tips To Save Money When Re-Upholstering

Here are some tips you can consider to save a few bucks when reupholstering your boat seats.

  • Check the padding. If it’s gone flat, you can install new (but thinner) padding on it. Thinner padding will be cheaper, allowing you to save some money. But if there are bumps in the padding, completely replacing the foam sheets is the recommended option.

Foam pads are considered one of the significant expenses in the boat seat restoration process; hence, saving money on this material will make a considerable difference.

  • If the vinyl is still in good condition, you can consider reusing it (in fact, many people reuse it). Similarly, other metallic items (snaps, sockets, and screws) may be reusable. Reusing vinyl can save a lot of money, but other small metallic things won’t make much difference.
  • Don’t always stick to the cheapest materials. Cheap material doesn’t last long. So, it’s advisable to buy a bit costly material, which can last longer, hence proving to be cheaper in the long run.

For instance, if low-quality material costs $2,000 (imaginary figure), it’s best to spend, say ($3,000). That way, you won’t revive your boat seats again shortly.

  • Perhaps the upholstery kit (discussed above) isn’t essential as most of the included items are accessible at home. Instead of going for the set, you can purchase a good-quality nylon thread (discussed above), eliminating the upholstery kit.

That’s it! By the end of this article, you must have learned about the materials needed for reupholstering and their cost estimates. Remember that there’s a wide variety of materials in the market, and perhaps you can find cheaper items. We’ve covered a few tips to save money and a few points that you can consider before getting started with the restoration process. Our job was to give you the correct and informative details, and now it’s time for you to take action. Good luck!

Revamp Your Voyage: Unveil Boat Seat Reupholstery Costs

Wave goodbye to saggy seats and hello to high seas luxury! Discover the real price of plush comfort as we dive into the ultimate guide on reupholstering boat seats. Set sail on savvy savings!

sailboat upholstery cost

Your boat seats encounter harsh external factors like saltwater and sunlight whenever you go on a sail. Over time, these factors cause the seats’ quality to deteriorate. If your boat seat is no longer in shape, you have two options: either replace the seat entirely or reupholster it.

On average, the cost of reupholstering boat seats ranges between $100 to $500. Factors affecting the price include size, type of seat, and whether you do it yourself or hire a professional. The cost is per seat. However, you can usually find a professional who is willing to give a discount to any extra seats you need reupholstering.

Reupholstering your boat seats doesn’t have to be an expensive venture. At the same time, it doesn’t have to be too cheap. Before making the decision, inspecting your boat seat properly is important.

You should check the seat’s foam, wood, and corners for damage or rot. Some boat seats will need a 360-degree reupholstering, while others may only need a few touch-ups. The extent of damage after inspecting will help you determine which is appropriate.

Supposing you’ve decided to reupholster your boat seats. In that case, you’ll find this article helpful. It covers all the common questions about the cost of reupholstering boat seats.

How Much Does It Cost To Reupholster Boat Seats?

sailboat upholstery cost

Reupholstering boat seats might cost upwards of $80.00 per hour if you hire a professional: most boat yards and marinas over such repair services. However, you’ll spend around $200 on average if you can carry out the task yourself.

It’s usually better to have a professional handle the reupholstering task to get the best results. However, if you’re on a budget, you can opt to do it yourself.

DIY vinyl boat seat reupholstery can be a simple task, especially when the damage to the seat isn’t much. However, one thing is certain: it’ll take time. Unfortunately, many boat owners don’t have this time, so they opt for a professional service.

Professional reupholstering services typically include additional charges, including labor fees and the price of the marine vinyl you want to use. Normally, the higher the damage to the seat, the higher the materials they’ll need, and the higher the price you’ll pay.

How Much Does It Cost To Hire a Professional To Reupholster Boat Seats?

Professional upholstery shops charge an average of $80 per hour, with the cost ranging from $55 to $150. However, the exact cost you’ll pay will depend on two main factors – boat type and work type.

If you own a high-end boat – a luxury boat – that costs more than $8,000, you should probably hire a professional upholstery shop. Only these professional shops can perform satisfactorily, as they have the tools and experience.

You should know that a luxury boat is expensive to maintain, just as its price. In addition, you’ll need to pay for more quality materials; thus, the cost may be over $150 per hour.

Furthermore, depending on the nature of the work, a professional may need to devote more time to complete it. One example of work is reupholstering a seat cushion, which may take up to two hours.

Another example is if you want to reupholster a sundeck that is 5 feet by 5 feet. Again, the professional shop will typically need at least five days to finish the upholstery, and you could pay up to $640.

How Much Does It Cost To Reupholster Boat Seats by Yourself?

Reupholstering your boat seats yourself will cost you a total of $150 to $200 for regular boats. But, of course, smaller boat sizes will cost much lesser.

As you’d expect, it’s less expensive to reupholster boat seats by yourself compared to hiring a professional. However, it’s only ideal to do the job yourself when minimal damage is needed. Unless you have experience with boat repairs, you will find it difficult to reupholster a boat seat with heavy damage on your own.

You can perform DIY reupholstering with or without sewing. If you have the skills, sewing will make a great option. However, note that there will be areas that need much effort and focus on many details.

Some boat chairs, for instance, feature pull-downs that look terrible if they are not made equally. Furthermore, suppose you’re reupholstering a sundeck. In that case, you need to pay attention to make the stitching even, or else the result will be unattractive.

If you don't want to sew, patterns are available that will let you staple the seams, which is especially helpful for the boat's side panels. However, the downside of not sewing is that you can't create clean and defined edges.

How Much Does a Simple Boat Seat Reupholster Cost?

sailboat upholstery cost

A simple boat reupholstering job is not expensive, and you’ll most likely do it yourself and spend around $100; however, if you hire a professional. In that case, it may take an hour or two to complete the task. Hence, you should expect to pay around $150 to $200 .

However, the fact that it’s a simple boat reupholstering job doesn’t mean you should use cheap materials. Subsequently, you’ll still expose the upholstery to weather and other outdoor elements. If it’s cheap material, you’ll find yourself redoing an upholstery sooner than later.

Fortunately, the primary materials you need for a simple boat reupholstering job – vinyl and silicone – are not highly expensive. You can purchase quality vinyl material and UV-resistant silicone without breaking the bank.

Other factors like abrasion-resistant material, mildew-resistant materials, high tear-strength, and antimicrobial medium-density foam are also important.

How Much Does a Fancy Boat Seat Reupholster Cost?

sailboat upholstery cost

Upholstering a boat is already a costly endeavor. Therefore, you'll pay higher if you want any special details added, like a certain shape, some piping, or any other embellishment. A fancy boat reupholstering job can cost as high as $500 for regular boats.

The price is higher because not only will you need to purchase extra materials for the decorations, but you’ll also spend more time on the job. The latter is highly instrumental if you hire a professional upholstering shop.

Note that elaborate patterns, particularly those involving stitching, can reduce the durability of the upholstery. An example is if you add too many fancy designs with stitching. In addition, since stitching creates new holes in the fabric, it also creates new weak places that will wear out the furniture faster.

With all these, a fancy boat reupholstering job may not be a good idea. It’s expensive and can make the boat seat vulnerable. If you conclude to perform a fancy boat reupholstery, ensure you hire the best available professional service – you shouldn’t do it yourself.

What Is the Cost of Marine Vinyl for Boat Seats?

sailboat upholstery cost

Marine vinyl is one of the most important materials you need for boat reupholstery. The price of this material varies; the deciding factors are quality and color.

However, you should expect to spend around $15 to $25 per yard for a good quality vinyl material. On the other hand, high-end materials can cost anywhere between $50 and $60 per yard.

Some high-end vinyl materials, especially those that feature rare colors and notable designs, cost up to $100 per yard. These costs can be intimidating, but at the end of the day, you should go for a material that suits your boat.

How much vinyl you'll need to reupholster a boat depends on its size and the number of seats. So it's always better to stock up on more than you’ll need should your estimations be incorrect.

If you hire a professional upholstering shop for the job, ask about the cost of the marine vinyl. You may be able to purchase it at a lower price elsewhere.

The same applies if you’re doing the job yourself. You can compare different shops' costs before deciding which to buy from.

How Much Does It Cost To Purchase New Boat Seats?

sailboat upholstery cost

Several factors affect boat seat prices. While some seats are single, others are sold in pairs. You can purchase single seats for a regular boat for $100 to $200. On the other hand, you can pay up to $300 to $500 for double seats.

As explained earlier, it’s more affordable to reupholster a boat seat than purchase a new one. However, your boat seat may be damaged beyond repair in some situations. As a result, you have no option but to get a new one.

When you opt to buy a new boat seat, here are the factors you should consider:

Comfortability

A new boat seat should make boating more comfortable. Thus, comfort is the most important factor. Consider purchasing a boat that caters to your every physical need, with special attention paid to your butt and back.

In particular, you should go for foam-padded seats, which are widely considered more comfortable than their uncushioned counterparts. If you plan on spending many hours on the boat for activities like fishing or sightseeing, this is non-negotiable.

Resistance To Weather

Seats on boats are always at risk of being damaged by harsh weather conditions. As explained earlier, it’s one of the main reasons why they need reupholstering. Therefore, a boat seat's durability depends on how well it can survive such harsh conditions.

Covered seats designed with UV-resistant materials tend to hold up well even after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Also, if your boat seat gets wet, which will happen regularly, mold and mildew might build up. For this reason, you should get a seat resistant to mildew and mold growth.

Available Space

In addition to comfortability and weather resistance, the available room in your boat is another important consideration when purchasing a new seat. In particular, the new seat should be able to fit easily into the space of the old seat.

Furthermore, you should also consider the boat's carrying capacity. Most importantly, be careful not to overload the boat.

Carrying Capacity

Seats that fail after just a few outings can be frustrating for boat owners. However, this often happens when they ignore the seat’s carrying capacity.

Manufacturers always list the seat's maximum carrying capacity, and the seat will collapse if your weight exceeds the specified limit. As a result, when you purchase a boat seat, be sure it can accommodate you properly.

Finally, if you’re a fancy person, you’ll want to be on the lookout for the seat design. In addition to increasing the boat's aesthetic value, a well-designed boat seat may increase your return on investment if and when you decide to sell.

However, just as when it comes to reupholstering, a premium-designed boat seat can be expensive.

Is It Cheaper To Reupholster Your Boat Seats or Buy New Ones?

sailboat upholstery cost

Boat seats range in price, just like the cost of reupholstering them. Generally, it’s more expensive to buy a new boat seat than reupholster it. However, this is not always true, especially for small boats.

Small boat seats cost anywhere between $100 to $200. In fact, you can even purchase some boat seats for less than $80. For such boats, it’s better to buy a new seat than reupholster the damaged one.

However, supposing the damaged seat is a premium pontoon seat, a bench seat, a lounge seat, or a swing back seat. In such cases, you will spend more than $400 if you want to replace the seats entirely. Meanwhile, a reupholstering job will cost around $300.

How Much Does a Complete Boat Interior Restoration Cost?

In some cases, you may need more than reupholstering your boat seats. Rather, a complete interior restoration will be what brings your boat back to life.

Such a restoration is expensive and can cost you up to $800 to $1,000. For higher-end boats, you should budget up to $1,500 to $2,000.

Boat interior restoration doesn’t always involve damaged or old interior parts. Some boat owners redesign their boat’s interior if they don’t like its original design.

Seats, interior side panels, the dashboard, the boat engine cover, and the carpets may all need replacement as part of a full restoration. As a result, an expert is the best for the job. However, opting for a DIY isn’t ideal.

Boat Upholstery: Which Material Should You Use?

sailboat upholstery cost

Vinyl upholstery is popular due to its comfort, durability, and affordability. Leather is also a good but more expensive choice because of its classic look and feel.

Table of Contents

The common types of boat upholstery material

The most popular materials for upholstery include vinyl, leather, and fabric. Each material offers its own unique benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to know the differences between them in order to make the right choice for your boat.

Vinyl is the most popular material used for boat upholstery because of its durability and waterproofing capabilities.

It is also easy to clean and maintain, making it a great choice for those who want to keep their upholstery looking like new.

Vinyl is also available in a wide range of colors, allowing you to customize the look of your boat interior.

Leather is another popular option when it comes to boat upholstery.

It is more expensive than vinyl, but it offers a classic look and feels that many people prefer.

Leather is also very durable, and it will last for many years without needing to be replaced. Additionally, leather is easy to clean and maintain.

Finally, the fabric is also an option for boat upholstery.

Fabric is less expensive than both vinyl and leather, but it is not as durable or waterproof as the other materials.

However, the fabric does provide a comfortable feel, and it is available in a variety of colors and patterns, making it a great way to add some style to your boat interior.

No matter which material you decide to use for your boat upholstery, it is important to choose one that will withstand the elements and hold up over time.

The Pros and Cons of Each Material

There are a variety of materials available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here is an overview of the most common types of upholstery materials and their pros and cons.

Vinyl: Vinyl is one of the most popular materials for boat upholstery due to its durability, affordability, and ease of cleaning.

It is water-resistant and can withstand moisture and humidity. However, it can fade over time and may crack or split if not taken care of properly.

Leather: Leather is another popular choice for boat upholstery due to its luxurious look and feel.

It is also very durable and resistant to moisture, but it does require more maintenance than other materials.

Leather can also be expensive and may require special cleaners or conditioners to keep it looking its best.

Fabric: Fabric upholstery is less durable than vinyl or leather but is usually the most comfortable and visually appealing option.

It comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns, making it easy to find something that matches the style of your boat.

However, the fabric is more prone to fading, staining, and mildew damage, so it may need to be replaced more often than other materials.

Canvas: Canvas is a great choice for boat upholstery due to its strength and waterproof properties.

It is also fairly affordable and easy to clean. The downside is that canvas can become moldy or mildewed if it isn’t properly cared for, so regular cleaning is essential.

How to Choose the Right Material for Your Boat

When it comes to boat upholstery, choosing the right material is essential. Not only does the material you choose determine how your boat will look and feel, but it can also affect its longevity and performance.

In order to make the best choice for your boat, there are several factors you should consider.

The first thing to take into account is the weather conditions in which your boat will be used.

Different materials are better suited to different climates and weather conditions, so you should make sure that the material you choose is able to withstand the environment in which your boat will be operating.

This includes things like temperature, humidity, and exposure to water and sun.

Another factor to consider is the amount of wear and tear that your boat’s upholstery is likely to receive.

If you plan on taking your boat out on a regular basis or using it for competitive sailing, then you should choose a material that is durable and can stand up to frequent use.

On the other hand, if you only plan on using your boat occasionally, then you may be able to opt for a lighter material.

The final factor to consider is budget.

There are many types of upholstery materials available, ranging from inexpensive fabrics to high-end leather.

Depending on your budget and the type of look you’re going for, you may be able to find something that fits both your needs and your wallet.

Which Boat Seat Materials Suit Your Boating Style?

Is marine vinyl good for upholstery?

Marine vinyl is one of the most popular materials used for boat upholstery.

It’s highly durable, water-resistant, and easy to maintain. Plus, it’s available in a variety of colors and styles, allowing you to customize your boat’s interior to your taste.

The main advantage of using marine vinyl for boat upholstery is its durability.

Marine vinyl is designed to withstand the rigors of being in a marine environment and will typically last for years without showing signs of wear or fading.

It also has a high resistance to saltwater, making it a great option for boats that spend a lot of time in the ocean.

In addition to its durability, marine vinyl is also a relatively low-maintenance option.

It can be easily cleaned and is resistant to mildew and mold, so you don’t have to worry about regular maintenance and upkeep.

The material is also UV resistant, so it won’t fade in the sun and can handle occasional exposure to the elements.

Overall, marine vinyl is an excellent choice for boat upholstery if you’re looking for something that is both durable and easy to maintain.

The material is available in a wide range of colors and styles, so you should be able to find something that fits your individual needs and tastes.

Marine vinyl vs. Upholstery vinyl?

One of the main differences between marine vinyl and upholstery vinyl is in their composition.

Marine vinyl is made from a heavier-grade material and is specifically designed for use in marine environments.

It’s resistant to UV rays, water, mildew, and salt water, and is also designed to hold up against fading, cracking, and chipping better than regular upholstery vinyl.

Marine vinyl also typically has a glossy finish that makes it look more attractive.

Upholstery vinyl, on the other hand, is generally not designed for marine environments. It is usually made from a lighter-weight material and is not as durable or long-lasting as marine vinyl.

Upholstery vinyl also lacks the glossy finish that marine vinyl has, making it less attractive.

Another difference between marine vinyl and upholstery vinyl is in their cost. Marine vinyl is typically more expensive than upholstery vinyl because of its heavier-grade material and its resistance to wear and tear.

Upholstery vinyl tends to be less expensive since it is made from a lighter-grade material and isn’t as durable.

Overall, both marine vinyl and upholstery vinyl can be used for boat upholstery, but it’s important to choose the right one for your particular needs.

If you’re looking for a material that is more durable and resistant to wear and tear, then marine vinyl might be the best option.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option with a slightly less attractive finish, then upholstery vinyl may be a better choice.

Which is thicker 20 or 30 gauge vinyl?

The gauge is the thickness of the material.30-gauge vinyl is thicker than 20 gauge.

30-gauge vinyl is heavier and sturdier than 20 gauge, making it a better choice for applications that require more durability and strength.

The thickness of 30-gauge vinyl also provides better resistance against tearing, puncturing, and mildew. On the other hand, 20-gauge vinyl is lighter, thinner, and not as durable, but it is also less expensive.

To give you an idea of how thick these two gauges are, a standard US dime measures 1.35mm in thickness.

20-gauge vinyl has a thickness of .51mm, while 30-gauge vinyl measures .76mm, making it nearly twice as thick.

So, if you need something that is more durable and sturdier for your boat’s upholstery, you should opt for the 30-gauge vinyl.

How much does it cost to put vinyl on a boat?

The cost of covering your boat with vinyl depends on several factors, including the size of the boat, the type of vinyl you choose, and any additional services you might need.

Generally, you can expect to spend anywhere from $15-$50 per yard for standard vinyl upholstery. If you’re looking for a more durable material, like marine-grade vinyl, the cost can go up to as much as $100 per yard.

Additionally, if you require any customization of the vinyl, such as special stitching or heat welding, this can also add to the overall cost.

It’s also important to factor in labor costs when calculating how much it will cost to put vinyl on a boat. Professional upholsterers typically charge anywhere from $30-$70 per hour for their services.

Depending on the size and complexity of the project, the labor costs could easily add up to several hundred dollars.

Finally, don’t forget to factor in the cost of any additional materials or supplies that you may need for the project, such as adhesive or sewing supplies.

The cost of these materials can range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars, depending on the type and amount of supplies needed.

What is a cheap alternative to vinyl?

If you’re looking for an affordable and durable alternative to vinyl, canvas is a great option.

Canvas is usually made of cotton, which is soft and breathable, making it ideal for boat upholstery. It’s also resistant to fading and water, making it a great choice for boats exposed to the sun and water.

While canvas is not as durable as vinyl, it can be more affordable and may be a better choice for those on a budget.

Additionally, canvas is easier to sew and customize than vinyl, so you can make it look exactly how you want.

If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to vinyl for your boat upholstery, canvas is definitely worth considering.

How long does marine upholstery last?

The life expectancy of marine upholstery can vary depending on the type of material chosen, how well it is cared for, and how often it is exposed to the elements.

In general, marine upholstery made with quality materials and properly maintained can last 10-15 years or more.

When considering how long marine upholstery will last, you should think about the material used and the environment in which it will be used.

Marine-grade fabrics such as Sunbrella, Top Gun, and Herculite are designed to withstand outdoor environments, but they may not last as long as other types of materials if they are used indoors.

Additionally, if the material is exposed to excessive moisture, heat, or UV rays, it may degrade faster than expected.

In addition to choosing a durable fabric, proper maintenance is key to making sure your marine upholstery lasts.

To extend the life of your upholstery, be sure to follow any care instructions provided by the manufacturer.

This includes cleaning the material regularly with a mild detergent and warm water and using a protective spray or covering when not in use.

What is stronger polyurethane or vinyl?

Generally speaking, polyurethane is considered to be the stronger of the two materials, with greater durability and better resistance to UV light, abrasion, and tearing.

Polyurethane is a type of polymer that is lightweight, highly durable, and resistant to abrasion and tearing.

It is often used in automotive and marine upholstery because it has a high resistance to mildew, moisture, and other environmental conditions.

It is also resistant to cracking, fading, and UV light, making it a great choice for outdoor applications.

Vinyl is a synthetic material made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It is more affordable than polyurethane but is also less durable.

Vinyl can become brittle and crack over time, especially when exposed to sunlight and other environmental conditions. It is also more prone to staining and fading than polyurethane.

Is marine vinyl the same as faux leather?

No, marine vinyl and faux leather are not the same. Marine vinyl is a synthetic material that is designed to be waterproof and UV resistant for use in boat upholstery.

Faux leather is a man-made material designed to look like real leather and is not as durable or waterproof as marine vinyl.

The primary difference between the two is that marine vinyl can be used outdoors in wet or salty environments and will last longer than faux leather.

Faux leather is more cost effective but should not be used in outdoor settings, as it will wear out quickly due to exposure to the elements.

Which is better polypropylene or vinyl?

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that will last a long time, then polypropylene may be the best choice. However, if you’re looking for something with a more luxurious feel, then vinyl may be the better option.

Polypropylene is a synthetic plastic material that is strong and durable, and it is generally more affordable than vinyl.

It is also resistant to water, mildew, and fading, making it a great choice for outdoor furniture and boats.

Polypropylene is not as comfortable or luxurious as vinyl, but it can be easily wiped clean and is quite affordable.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is a popular upholstery material due to its comfort and luxurious feel.

It also provides a great level of durability and resistance to moisture, making it an excellent choice for boats and outdoor furniture.

Vinyl does tend to be more expensive than polypropylene and can be difficult to clean if stained.

How to Replace Marine Upholstery

If you spend a lot of time on your boat, your upholstery gets exposed to sun, wind, rain and other weather elements. It’ll probably start to crack, tear or fade in time and need replacing. If you’re wondering whether replacing marine upholstery is difficult to do and how quickly it can be done, here are some tips to help.

Replacement boat upholstery.

Pay Someone Else to Do It

It can take a certain level of patience and skill to do boat upholstery repair or replacement yourself. There’s no shame in paying someone else to do it if you’re short of time or the necessary skills. However, when you talk with various upholstery installers, make sure that they’ve worked on boats. It’s very different upholstering a car seat or couch compared with a boat.

If you’ve never done a boat upholstery project or any type of upholstery project, you may want to shadow a specialist and help out on a few projects before attempting to replace the fabric on your own boat. Alternatively, have an experienced buddy help you out (and buy your bud some pizza afterward to say thanks!).

How to reupholster boat seats.

Do It Yourself

If you decide to do the replacement yourself, then the seemingly obvious first step is to remove the existing boat fabric. Not so fast, though. Actually, take pictures of the old upholstery from multiple angles while it’s still on the boat so you have points for comparison. When you do each piece, take close-up pictures beforehand and as you remove the staples and the skin. Also, if you’re tempted to cut the skin off, don’t. You risk leaving staples in and messing up your new job.

Replace each piece one at a time rather than removing all of your upholstery then going back in to cover everything. When you do it little by a little, your memory is fresher as to how a cover should look.

Where do you get this new vinyl upholstery or other fabric, though? You can make it yourself or order new skins from a company you trust. Once your new upholstery arrives, prep it according to the instructions from the company. You may have to spread the fabric to avoid fold marks and may even need to steam the material before installing it. Common tools for installation include seam removers, slip film, a screwdriver, staple remover, stapler, stainless steel staples and spray adhesive. You should also keep welt cord piping, welt trim, bonded polyester thread and marine-grade foam handy.

Learn about DIY boat upholstery.

As you remove existing fabrics, check the foam to ensure it’s still usable. If the foam has gone flat, good thing that you have new marine-grade foam to step in. Go a little larger than may seem necessary because new upholstery will compress the foam. You can use Dacron if only small areas or corners need attention.

Now comes a lot of sewing and stapling. Use needles and thread to replicate the current pattern or devise your own. You can use sewing machines if you want, but they can be dangerous. Wait to trim any extra fabric off until you are 100 percent sure that everything fits as it should.

Another thing to wait on until after installation is nearly complete: the cutting of holes. For example, don’t cut your speaker holes before you’ve installed the fabric. Also, don’t use ordinary pens. Pencil marks or grease marks do the job just fine for identifying where stripes, welt, cording and other pieces start and stop.

One last tip is to cover the foam with plastic slip film before you install new upholstery. This speeds the process along considerably, keeps some water out and makes the new fabric look better.

There can be some trial and error involved in replacing marine upholstery, but when done right, the result is a beautiful boat and many more adventures on the water .

Is there a company that has a website i can custom design my car seats to be recovered…i can either send them my skins off my seats now and they will send me my new ones by mail?

I liked that you explained that upholstery repair or replacement takes a lot of patience and skill. I would imagine that trying to repair or replace upholstery yourself would be stressful and frustrating. I would consider hiring a professional to take care of it for me so that I can be stress-free.

Very helpful. Thank you for taking the time.

How do you decide when to use 1/4″ foam backing on your vinyl when reupholstering boat seats?

It’s helpful to know that we should look for someone that specifically has experience working with boats because other upholstery works differently. We’re thinking of restoring our old boat so that we can use it this summer, and the seats are worn down enough that we want them fixed. I don’t have the experience to feel comfortable doing it myself, so we might want to find a professional that has done it before.

DIY Boat Upholstery Repair: What You'll Need and What Cost to Expect

DIY Boat Upholstery Repair: What You'll Need and What Cost to Expect

DIY Boat Upholstery Repair: What You'll Need and What Cost to Expect

Just like a car, the upholstery on your boat seats can get faded, stained or ripped over time. If the seats need a refresh - or if you just want to change up the look - our DIY marine upholstery repair guide will help you get started.

Do-it-yourself boat upholstery can be a big money-saver versus a repair shop. But the exact process can vary greatly depending on the type of upholstery, the seat style and even what boat you own. For this guide, we're going to focus on the items you need and how much you can expect boat seat upholstery repair to cost.

Boat Upholstery Supplies List & Preparation

For small tears and holes, a boat seat vinyl repair kit may be all you need. Make sure to get a quality kit with mixing compounds or patch tape that will match the existing vinyl's color. These kits can cost as little as $15-20 at a marine store.

However, large tears or significant fading and staining will require replacing the vinyl. If you determine a full reupholstering is necessary, start by removing the seats and inspecting them. While new boat seat covers may be all you need, there's also the possibility that the seat foam is damaged or the structure is rotting. Doing the correct repairs now will save you from having to "Bust Out Another Thousand" later.

You should also measure the existing seat cover and foam padding to make sure you buy the correct amount of material. To measure the old cover, remove it from the seat and lay it flat on the ground.

Once these things are completed, you'll need the following DIY boat seat repair supplies:

  • Marine-grade vinyl
  • Foam padding (if necessary)
  • Screwdriver
  • Heavy-duty staple gun with stainless steel staples
  • Sewing scissors
  • Electric knife (if foam is too thick for scissors)
  • A sewing machine and supplies (for sewing method)
  • Marking pencils

How Much Does DIY Boat Upholstery Cost?

While the final cost will be based on the size of each seat and how many you're repairing, there are a few guidelines to help you estimate the cost of DIY boat seat reupholstery.

  • Marine-grade vinyl typically costs around $20-22 per square yard.
  • A 72" long x 24" wide x 2" thick sheet of marine seat foam costs about $30-35 depending on density. You'll also pay more for thicker padding and less for thinner padding.
  • A heavy-duty staple gun kit is $30-50.
  • High-quality sewing shears are $15-30 while an electric foam knife can be anywhere from $30-100.
  • If you want or need to sew the vinyl, an industrial sewing machine plus supplies is between $800-1,000.

Boat Seat Maintenance

Whether you repair or replace the upholstery, make sure to give it proper care. At Bakes Marine, we offer a variety of boat upholstery cleaning products that include seat soap, vinyl conditioner, UV protectant and stain removers to help your seats last. We also do professional boat seat upholstery work at our Issaquah, Washington service department.

Cost of cushions?

Jfelkins

I'm going to look at some used cushions for my ODay 23. I have no idea what cushions cost and my boat didn't have them when I bought it. What do new cushions cost? Thanks!

repawn

Hi - Cost will depend on may things - I didn't have any on my 22 - so I made them - about 150 in fabric / thread from Sailrite and 100 in new foam - I already had a sewing machine and an electric knife to cut the foam. That wold probably be the cheapest way of doing it.

Jim 5757

Here's a source that will give you a ballpark for custom made cushions. http://www.ccushions.com/boatlistorder.asp just find your boat in the list. They list the Oday 23 as $712.00. From their flyer "Whether we use one of our patterns, or your custom layout, a set of C Cushions Cockpit Cushions average $42.00 per square foot."

LuzSD

When you find what you want and you are hesitant, go for it. Cushions are worth getting, and each time you use them you'll know why. Cool days/evenings are warmer, Hot days are cooler, they are just worth it.

Honestly, the cost is mostly up to you....check with other sailors in your area as to who has made cushions for their boats... we went to a home upholstery shop and had them made for our O'Day 272 twice....once just the settee cushions and then later for the berths....each time (realizing it was not the entire boat)...we spent maybe & 450.00 or so.....we had the big quarter berth cushion done separately in vinyl because we are always using the quarter berth to tore items like the cockpit cushions, etc....fans, duffels...etc....and we thought the vinyl would work better and it has....but I'm not really desiring to have the settee cushions, etc. in vinyl....Our boat came new from O'Day with a blue flame stitch material that reminded me of a Texaco service station restroom so we replaced that right away...(maybe two weeks) after commissioning of the boat....it was fun picking out the material and colors as it makes a huge difference in the boat's interior livability....Have fun ! I got a quote from a marine upholstery guy about 15 years ago for my Oday 23 to replace the interior cushions. He told me up front that I wasn't going to be happy. About $2500; more than half of what the whole boat cost. Try a regular, non-marine upholsterer. They may be less. If you can make your own, that's far and away the best option.

Ward H

Try visiting www.sailrite.com . They have great how to videos for almost anything, including making your own cushions. They also supply all materials and have great customer service. Recovering my 25's cushions is on my list for this winter's projects. I read one guys approach. He said the first came out kind of crappy, the second better, the rest came out real good. Then he went back and redid the first two. I'm just finishing my 3rd smaller project using a early 60s Kenmore sewing machine. It looks like it will do the job for the cushions just fine.

Peggie Hall HeadMistress

Peggie Hall HeadMistress

Interior cushions don't have to be "marine"...any upholstery material and foam that will work in a beach house will be just fine on a boat....and any local upholstery shop can make them. I saved even more by buying my fabrics from a discount fabric outlet. I also had to replace the foam on my own boat...the shop used the old foam to get the measurements. Since you don't have any, if you can borrow a set that they can use to get dimensions, it'll save you cost of a trip to take measurements. As for cockpit cushions...again, anything that's suitable for patio furniture that lives outside on the deck at a beach house will work just as well in the cockpit of a boat..."marine" just costs a lot more.

kito

I never used a sewing machine before but was pleased with the results of doing it myself. It's really not that hard. Just practice on a old piece of foam for a few times first. Do your homework and checkout videos on Youtube on how to recover cushions.

We did ours a couple of years ago. What we learned is there's a lot of different types of foam out there. Try to find foam that's not so soft that it flattens out when you sit on it but not so hard that it's uncomfortable. We chose the softer weight for the seat backs. For the V-berth we made a sandwich of 3" medium and 2" memory foam on top. A bit more boat bucks but quite comfy...

If you are up to doing it yourself check out Sailrite. Everything you need including how to videos. I did it on my Hunter 34. Recovered all of the interior cushions for about $1000.00.

+1 on markwbird comment. I think we got the foam from the foam factory.

We have never needed to replace the original foam that O'Day used so that has kept the cost of replacing the project by quite a bit.......Pat

wristwister

Another vote here for do-it-yourself. A side benefit of doing your own cushions will be the tools and knowledge gained. Once I finished all my cushions I looked around and said "Say, that sail covers looking a little ratty, I'll whip up a new one ... and that stern BBQ could use a nice cover ... hey, why not stitch up that tear in the genny ... a nice boom sunshade would be cool ...". You get the idea. Some guys have their man cave, I've got my sewing room ... don't judge me!

the_alpine

You can buy a sailrite sewing maching, and do it all yourself for significantly less than it would cost to have it done. Its not hard, especially with all the youtube videos showing how. You could then sell the sailrite for the same amount or more than what you paid for it.

Thanks y'all!

Thinking of reupholstering your boat seats? In this article, we explain how to choose and put together your own DIY boat upholstery kit, to bring new life to your boat seats.

Let’s face it, a boat is exposed to one of the harshest recreational environments known to man. The marine environment openly exposes your boat seats to saltwater, temperature fluctuations, UV rays, and a myriad of other conditions which can result in cracking, fading, and the development of mildew and mold.

Therefore, when it comes to repairing the upholstery in your boat, it is important to make sure that you choose nothing less than the highest quality materials available on the market today. In deciding how to go about your boat reupholstery, you should pay close attention to factors such as longevity and durability, enjoyment and comfort, aesthetics, ease of maintenance, as well as the resale value of your boat.

Your Options

When it comes to DIY boat upholstery work, you have two options:

  • Get a custom boat upholstery kit created for you.
  • Do your own DIY boat upholstery.

Custom do it yourself marine upholstery kits can save you a fair bit of work, however almost all the boat upholstery kits currently on the market depend on a custom measure and quote for your boat. As you can imagine, this can be very costly; one example I found for a regular, family-sized recreational vessel was $5,000+.

Despite looking everywhere on the internet for pre-made off-the-shelf boat upholstery kits, that you can simply order online and put together yourself at home, we couldn’t find anything. It’s a great idea, but the product simply does not exist. Of course, you have the option of buying some premade skins for your seats, but this means you need to have the exact right size of seat to match the skin. Alternatively, you can buy entire new seats, but you may not want to go to quite that extent, either.

So, that leaves you with one affordable option: do it yourself.

Custom Boat Upholstery Kit vs Doing It Yourself

You may be wondering whether it is better to do all the upholstery yourself from scratch, or if you should use a custom boat upholstery kit to ease some of the work. Re-upholstering your boat seats from scratch is not impossible by any means, and uses the same principles as upholstering other furniture using techniques explained in our step-by-step guide to reupholstering boat seats here .

The main deterrent to getting a custom-made boat upholstery kit is the cost, since it involves measuring your existing boat seats and making custom skins for you. To get an idea of the costs involved in getting custom boat upholstery work done, have a look at this article where we compare all the different boat re-upholstery options available to boat owners .

Custom Boat Upholstery Kits

  • Upholstery is professionally measured, designed and sewn together, giving a higher quality appearance.
  • Potentially higher boat resale value, as the boat seat upholstery will appear more professional.
  • Quicker than doing it yourself.
  • Limited designs, patterns and materials available. You may not be able to achieve the visual look and feel that want.
  • Expensive compared with buying the materials and doing it all yourself.
  • You need to take your boat in for a custom measure and quote, which may be difficult if your boat is in a remote area and/or cannot be towed.

Reupholstering Yourself

  • Full control over the materials and appearance, including the quality, color, design and pattern. Doing everything yourself means it is fully customizable.
  • Cheaper than a kit, although this depends on the type of materials you choose. If you choose high quality, difficult to find custom materials it could end up costing more.
  • More time consuming and challenging. Doing it from scratch, you will need to learn how to carry out upholstery tasks including measuring and sewing.
  • Rough, amateur finish if you don’t have prior experience with upholstering. Even if you can sew, using a sewing machine with heavy marine canvas is a totally different challenge to sewing clothing.
  • Heavy duty sewing machine required. For boat upholstery, you need a sewing machine that is capable of handling thick, heavy duty materials such as canvas. If you don’t have one, is it worth the expense?

Factors to Consider When Choosing Materials for Your Boat Upholstery DIY Kit

When it comes to selecting the best tools and materials for your DIY boat upholstery kit, it’s important to determine whether you want to upholster your boat with vinyl or fabric. There are many differences in the factors to consider when choosing these two materials. Vinyl upholstery is one of the most common and popular options for DIY boat upholstery kits. The reason for this is that vinyl is generally a lot easier to clean and maintain than fabric. Fabric is more comfortable to sit on than vinyl, but it is also a lot more difficult to clean and maintain on a regular basis. If you have plenty of time to focus on cleaning and maintaining the fabric, then it is an excellent choice for just about any boating need.

Durability and Longevity

When putting together your own DIY boat upholstery kit, selecting durable materials is always best. It’s essential that the kit uses marine-grade fabric or vinyl, to ensure that it can withstand the harsh environment of the ocean and open waters including sun and salt.

As a general rule, vinyl upholstery is extremely durable. Although it can be quite uncomfortable to sit on because your legs tend to stick to the material, it is its ease of cleaning and maintenance that ensures that it will last longer than fabric upholstery.

Easy Maintenance and Cleaning

Since boats are routinely exposed to marine conditions, it is important to make sure that you select something that is water and spill resistant. This will help to make sure that it is easy to maintain as well as easy to clean. Many quality vinyl materials available on the market today can be simply wiped down or cleaned with mild detergents.

Compared to vinyl, fabric requires a lot more effort to maintain and keep clean. There is a wide selection of different materials to choose from when it comes to fabric upholstery, and not all of them are created equal. If you choose to use fabric, pay close attention to the recommended cleaning instructions before making a final selection.

UV Resistance

The higher the quality of the material, the better the UV resistance. Due to the amount of time that a boat is exposed to direct sunlight, and is more likely to fade and deteriorate over time. The better the UV resistance of the material, the longer it can stand up to harmful UV rays. Over time, vinyl is more likely to crack due to continued exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Comfort and Enjoyment

Boating is a popular recreational experience that is meant to be pleasurable. As a result, it is important to make sure that you select high-quality materials that are soft, breathable, and comfortable to sit on. This is important because there is a wide selection of lower-quality materials that may feel like sandpaper on the back of your legs.

Unlike fabric boat upholstery, vinyl is not as flexible. While a quality vinyl material can be soft to the touch, and easily stretched and shaped, it is generally a lot stiffer than fabrics.

Aesthetics and Visual Appeal

Aesthetics and visual appeal also play an important role in putting together your DIY boat upholstery kit. The kit should include materials that look great and are of a high enough quality to provide you with that professional look when finished.

There is a wide selection of colors, textures, and patterns to choose from for your boat upholstery kit, so select wisely. Vinyl comes in a wide selection of color options that can match just about any boat. However, you will find that there are not quite as many color options, textures, or patterns to choose from when compared to fabric upholstery.

Resale Value

While it would be nice to own your boat indefinitely, it’s important to remember that there may be an eventual need to sell your boat in the future. As a result, it is always crucial to consider the resale value of your boat whenever you make changes. By choosing extremely durable and visually appealing upholstery fabrics or vinyl, you can increase the overall value of your vessel.

As a general rule, vinyl upholstery material costs substantially more than fabric. Because of this, many of the DIY vinyl boat upholstery materials available on the market today are slightly more expensive than the fabric alternatives. In general, fabric DIY boat upholstery sets are cheaper than their vinyl counterparts. However, when selecting a higher quality and higher thread count material, the price can quickly skyrocket.

DIY Boat Upholstery Kit Manufacturers

Below is a selection of some of the popular DIY boat upholstery kits available on the market today. To be honest, despite lots of searching, the selection of boat upholstery kits available online is very limited unfortunately. It seems many marine and upholstery stores have not caught onto selling all-in-one DIY boat upholstery kits online, yet. Below is a selection of the stores that we have found, that service the USA with off-the-shelf boat upholstery sets and supplies online. As well as these, there are a number of stores that allow you to bring your boat in and be measured for a custom made skin, but this option is likely to be quite expensive.

C&S Marine Skin Kit for Vinyl

Website: candsmarine.com

The C&S Marine Skin Kit is a vinyl upholstery kit available for a limited number of mass-produced boats. They allow you to update the look and feel of your boat by simply reskinning the existing chairs and cushions. Their kits are high quality, and as expected for marine upholstery they are UV, water and spill resistant. The main drawback is that they are only available for specific boats, so you’ll need to contact them to check if they have an option for yours.

Great Lakes Skipper Boat Seat Cushions and Covers

Website: greatlakesskipper.com

The Great Lakes Skipper boating store sells a range of marine upholstery supplies, including premade skins for boat seats, cushions and entire seats and backrests at an affordable price. They have a large range of products that can be purchased online, and varying sizes and styles.

Deegan Marine

Website: deeganmarine

Deegan Marine sells a range of marine upholstery supplies online, including seat covers and cushions for taking charge of your own boat upholstery. They have a large range of styles and sizes available, at good prices.

Pontoon Stuff

Website: pontoonstuff.com

As the name implies, Pontoon Stuff specializes in pontoon boats. Their main focus seems to be on furnishings, that is, pontoon boat upholstery. They offer a range of pontoon boat seat kits from budget to premium. If you have a pontoon boat, this may be a good option instead of carrying out the re-upholstery work yourself.

Other Popular Marine Upholstery Products

Vvivid marine vinyl upholstery kit.

Website: vvividshop.com

VViViD is one of the more popular vinyl upholstery kits available on the market today, however, at the time of writing they only provide the vinyl with other accessories sold separately, rather than an all-in-one kit. In saying that, they do sell high-quality marine-grade vinyl that comes in a good selection of sizes, colors, textures, and sizes. As you would expect for a marine upholstery vinyl, the components are water resistant and UV resistant, as well as easy to clean and durable. While they seem to have a good range of colors most of these are in the black-grey-brown spectrum, so if you’re looking for something more flashy you might not find it here.

SEM M25073 Vinyl Coat Upholstery Paint Kit

Website: semproducts.com

When you can’t repair and reupholster all of the seats in your boat, you can still make sure that all of the upholstery matches with the help of the SEM vinyl paint kit. This kit is the most cost-effective solution for refreshing the interior of your boat, and includes vinyl paint, prep spray and instruction manual. As you have probably worked out, this is not a full upholstery kit, but it could be a useful and cost-effective workaround if you have found some pre-loved or discounted boat seat cushions and want to paint them in a color to match the rest of your vessel. The paint is quick drying and easy to use, however the range of colors is a bit limited; but at least you do get choices in blue, green and yellow if you’re tired of the usual monotonous beige and grey options.

Final Thoughts on DIY Boat Upholstery Kits

This brings us to the end of our chat about boat upholstery DIY kits. We hope this has given you a good idea of the options available to you, and helped you decide whether a custom-made DIY kit or carrying out your own upholstery work from scratch is the better option.

My final thoughts are that while there is demand for DIY boat upholstery kits out there, the reality is there simply aren’t many all-in-one marine do it yourself upholstery kits you can order off the shelf and install yourself. For this article, we have looked up and down for kits that serve this purpose, and only found a smattering of results. Not for lack of trying, but sorry to say the products simply don’t seem to exist… if you’re a boating enthusiast looking for a new business venture, there’s an idea for you.

This leaves you with a few options:

  • Take your boat to a marine upholsterer who can measure a custom skin for your boat seats (expensive).
  • Replace your boat seats and cushions entirely, and don’t attempt to re-upholster them. Affordable option, but for a consistent look you’d have to do them all at once, which is annoying if you only need one cushion replaced.
  • Learn to re-upholster your boat seats yourself.

The option you choose really depends on the value of the boat you have. If you’ve got a luxury yacht with a good resale potential, for Christ sake don’t practice your marine upholstery skills on it unless you’re really determined to do a super fine job of it and you’ve got a professional to guide you. On the other hand if you’ve got a cheap but cheerful fishing or recreational family boat, then I’d say take the time to learn and do it yourself.

You can learn how to do your own boat upholstery work (without a kit) in this article where we provide step-by-step instructions. That article will also give you an idea of whether it is a project you can tackle, if you’re curious.

Happy upholstering!

How Much Sailboats Cost On Average (380+ Prices Compared)

Turns out that owning a sailboat is pretty affordable. OK, it isn't cheap, but it can absolutely be done on a budget. In this article, I'll show you exactly what to expect.

Sure, super yachts are expensive, but so is everything super (except for maybe supermarkets). But a modest, used sailboat can be as cheap as $2,500 and an additional $1,400 per year.

It may come as a surprise to you that you can get a decent sailboat for as little as $1,500 on Craigslist.

Average sailboat costs at a glance

We've compared thousands of listings, so you don't have to. If you just want the ballpark figures, here they are:

The average price of new sailboats is $425,000 ($127,000 to $821,000). The average price of used sailboats is $278,000 ($67,000 to $555,000). Maintenance costs are on average $2,000 - $3,000 per year, and the average total annual cost is $3,000 to $7,000.

Of course the price of a sailboat depends on our choices. We decide whether sailing is a rich man's game, or actually a very good holiday investment. (It beats driving to a bungalow park for sure - both cost-wise and the experience itself.)

How Much To Charter a Superyacht? (Less Than You Think)

Why you should trust us These figures are based on our latest research which was last updated September 26th 2023 . We do this research every year, giving us very accurate numbers and clear insight into the trend of sailboat prices. We've literally compared thousands of sailboat listings over the years, and we've done so methodically. The research is done by our researcher Tay, who is an engineer by trade.

This will be a long article because there are so many aspects to cover. I'd like to spend some time exploring the costs of actually buying the boat. Then I want to go into recurring costs , like mooring, maintenance, and insurance.

To really drive home what you're getting into , I'll give four real-life examples. These examples include every expense as a separate line-item. And we'll go over them line-by-line together.

Then I'll share our exact research results with you . This will include all our numbers: new vs. used, average price per foot, and much more. These are extremely detailed numbers (you don't have to read this if you don't want to).

At the end of the article, we'll discuss why a boat doesn't just cost money: she can actually make you some if you wanted.

  • A used family week-ender with a small cabin will cost roughly $30,000 (all-in for the first year).
  • If you dream of sailing around the world, expect to spend around $100,000.
  • New sailboats on average cost twice as much as used boats.
  • Maintenance cost are 5-10% of the boat's value per year. Docking costs are roughly $800 - $2,500 per year.
  • Sailboat prices have gone up 30% this year.

On this page:

Average sailboat cost: 2023 summary, examples of popular sailboats, and how much they cost, what does it cost to buy a sailboat, what does it cost to own a sailboat, make or save some money, related questions.

Before we really get into it, I first want to give you the quick rundown. So I've summarized our research for you.

Buying a sailboat

Small boats are up to 30 foot long . They'll be very capable and great for solo sailors or small families who want to go on day trips, or short week-end trips on inland waters. Some of them will have cabins and sleeping quarters, although small.

Medium boats are between 30 and 50 foot long . They'll host larger parties and will be more suited for longer trips, coastal sailing, or even bluewater cruising. Sailboat length isn't necessarily the most important feature for that, though.

Large boats are 50 foot and up . This is proper yacht territory, and they'll be a lot more luxurious, and also exponentially more expensive.

If you buy via a broker, you typically get more reliable boats, but also pay more. If you buy off of Craigslist, you get a fat discount, but there are more lemons on there too.

You could hire a boat surveyor who will inspect the boat before you buy it (much like when you buy a house). Those surveys are not very expensive and can be worth your money.

Owning a sailboat

There are a lot of costs involved with simply owning a boat. The biggest expenses will be docking and maintenance.

Those two alone will account for roughly 80% of your yearly expenses.

  • Maintenance : 5-10% of the boat's value
  • Docking : $800-$2,500 per year on average, depeding on location

If we want to know what we're getting ourselves into, we should know every expense to the dot.

Below, we'll go over four very different case studies. I'm hoping one of these will relate to your specific situation. It'll show you what to expect and how to budget for your purchase.

The four sailboat case studies

  • What does it cost if you want to keep your boat in good shape and have a good sailing experience? - aka: most people
  • What does it cost if you ONLY spend the absolute minimum amount to keep her floating?
  • If I want to sail the world on a budget, what's the absolute minimum?
  • If sailing is more of a status thing to you, how much money COULD you spend?

There are a lot of great boats out there for a good price and there are also some boats that are so expensive (or so cheap), it's not even fun to look at them.

But one thing's for sure: there are plenty of boats available, and even if you're on a very tight budget, you could absolutely still make it work. Sailing in and of itself is actually not that expensive: wind is free, water is free, boats can be cheap - if you're willing to look around a bit. It's all the little extras that add up quickly.

Listed below are 4 boats that make great beginner boats. Since more than 80% of all boats that are bought are second-hand, I'll use the prices of used boats I found on Craigslist.

If you want to know exactly where the numbers come from, don't worry, I'll explain them after the 4 examples.

1. Island Packet 26' for stressless weekends on the lake

The one-time costs are $24,860 Your total recurring costs are $5,650 per year, or $471 per month

Let's say you're like me and most other people and just want a nice boat without too much hassle. So you pay people for complex maintenance. You do the required maintenance and save up for future repairs. You do a little yourself, which saves you a couple of hundred of bucks a year. You also join a (cheap) sailing club to learn how to not trash the boat. You get the right trailer, and you save up some money for future repairs. You don't want to buy a bad boat, so you pay a fair purchase price

One-Time Costs:

Recurring costs:, 2. extreme low budget catalina 22'.

Catlina 22 white sailboat in marina

Ok, I'm very interested in how cheap you could actually go (in theory). Is it do-able to buy a very cheap sailboat and just keep her afloat, never change sails, and only pay for maintenance that is absolutely necessary to not sink?

In this scenario, I don't care about speed, so I don't change sails. I certainly won't join a sailing club, and I try to save some money on the marina by boondocking. I also happen to live in a cheap state registration and tax-wise.

Docking costs can get out of hand For an average sailboat, depending on your area and wishes, up to $5,000/year . Read everything about docking costs

I try to pay as little as possible for the boat itself (and I've actually found a Catalina 22 for $2,250 on Craigslist today!). I don't save up for rigging and hardware (tomorrows' worries). I try to get an extra 2 years out of my bottom paint and I only do the essential repairs, and I do them myself. But because I saved so much on the purchase, this little boat needs a lot of maintenance.

Luckily, I have time on my hands and know my way around engines and rigging, so I do all of it myself (with the help of YouTube).

I don't bother with winterizing my boat, I'll just sail somewhere warm. Oh, and I'll use the engine as little as possible to save on gas.

Will your boat be happy? Definitely not, but your wallet will be (for now). Can it be done? It's optimistic, but yes, I think it can be done. But you have to be mechanically inclined, and pretty creative.

The one-time costs are $2,428 Your total recurring costs are $1,380 per year, or $115 per month

Recurring Costs

3. low budget 35' ocean cruiser for traveling the world.

sailboat upholstery cost

If you dream of crossing oceans, you need a comfortable ride. Usually, most sailors pick a boat that's between 32' - 50' for two person ocean cruising. Anything under 32' gets pretty uncomfortable in high waves, although it can be done.

But this is also the range that gets expensive - quickly . So if we're on a tight budget, but also need a good and reliable boat: how much will it cost?

The boat will cost you $35,000. For this price, I've seen a beautiful 1983 wooden cutter (by Robert Tucker), multiple Beneteau Oceanis from '88 - '89, multiple Bavarias ... plenty of solid choices on the second-hand market here.

In this example, you don't join any sailing clubs (I assume you're pretty experienced if you want to cross oceans). You also don't winterize (you're sailing the Caribbean by now). No trailer, as you won't haul it out of the water any time soon.

You do pay a fair price for the boat because you don't want any surprises during your Tour du Monde. In need of a lot of bottom paint , since you're in saltwater most of the time. It's also a good idea to invest in at least SOME navigation equipment, so for $500 I've added a simple but capable GPS chartplotter and compass.

You can get a cheap but reliable chartplotter and compass for less than $500 - in total. If you want to learn more, head over to the recommended gear section .

The one-time costs are $37,590 Your total recurring costs are $5,425 per year, or $452 per month

4. Powerful 40' Yacht (and everything that goes with it)

Saloon of large yacht ready for dinner

Let's say you're in the game for the fame. What does it cost me to own a grande yacht with all luxuries (and costs) that go with it?

I join an expensive sailing club, hire pros that maintain the thing beautifully, and I also pay for winterization, the best trailer I can find. I replace my sails and running rigging every 5 years - since speed matters to me. Because she's my pride, I paint her every year. I spend an additional 500 bucks a year on special soaps and waxes.

I want a prime mooring location, so I pay a premium. I also get a small boat to hang from the large boat, to get to shore more quickly.

The one-time costs are $166,400 Your total recurring costs are $15,150 per year, or $1,263 per month

There are a couple of important factors that determine how much money you end up spending.

  • Size - length determines mooring costs, insurance, amount of paint on your hull, literally everything gets more expensive with every foot of length
  • New vs. used - of course, it makes all the difference whether you buy new or used. Typically, the price of a 25-year old used sailboat vs. a comparable new one is 3-4 times lower ($60,000 vs $200,000).

With used sailboats, I find that the price generally increases rapidly from 30 feet onwards

It's the same with new sailboats - or actually, it keeps increasing with every extra couple of feet. The reason is that as the boat gets bigger, it also gets more luxurious (upholstery, finishing, equipment).

The average price of a new sailboat per foot in USD:

  • under 30 ft: $3,217 per ft
  • 30 - 50 ft: $7,625 - $11,128 ft
  • over 50 ft: $14,927 - $78,033 per ft

On average, second-hand sailboats go at 1/3 - 1/4 of the cost of a new boat:

  • under 30 ft: $1,773 per ft
  • 30 - 50 ft: $6,473 per ft
  • over 50 ft: $10,091 - $36,889 per ft

If this is too much for you, you could always rent a boat instead. I recommend chartering. You can get great sailboats at great prices. Check out my charter recommendation here .

Cost of buying a sailboat

Price of new sailboats.

I've looked at the prices of thousands of yachts (really) on one of the largest yacht marketplaces in the world (- not manually, don't worry: with the help of their search function). This is what I came up with:

Source: Yachtworld.com Q3 2023

The price of new sailboats ranges from roughly $1,765 - $78,033 per foot. I've used these numbers to calculate the following list:

Here's the detailed price per foot for all lengths from 20 to 100 feet:

Price of used sailboats

We did the same for used sailboats, comparing thousands of listings. Here are the complete data:

The price of used sailboats ranges from roughly $882-$36,889 per foot . Here's the detailed price per foot for all lengths from 20 to 100 feet:

Prices on Craigslist

The price of used sailboats ranges from roughly $476-$2,098 per foot.

To get an average of the price of a used sailboat, I went over to Craigslist. I took the first 20 relevant search results for sailboats under, and over 30 feet.

Of course, the averages here are very speculative, as prices vary from day to day. But it gives a broad range of what to expect.

Over 50 feet, listings become meagre. I believe people tend to not place their 80-ft sailboats on Craigslist, but sell it through a broker instead.

Median Craigslist price of a used sailboat:

  • under 30 ft: $11,065
  • over 30 ft: $87,020

I've calculated the median price , not the average. The median is the price that's most common within the price range. This way the highest and lowest prices don't have as much impact.

Average Craigslist price-per-foot of a used sailboat:

  • under 30 ft: $476 per ft
  • over 30 ft: $2,098 per ft

This is what I found on Craigslist under 30 feet:

Compared to our 2022 research, the median price of new sailboats has gone up 22.5% (from $251,000 to $307,500). The average price has gone up 33.6% (from $248,000 to $331,250).

The average price of used sailboats under 30 ft on Craigslist has gone up 30% (from $8,500 to $11,000).

Catamarans are 60% more expensive

If you dream of owning a catamaran, you should expect to pay roughly 60% more for the boat, and 60% more on annual cost like upkeep and mooring. There are exceptions, of course, and for some boat lengths, new catamarans may be slightly more affordable than a monohull.

I've researched thousands of catamaran listings as well to come up with those numbers. The exact numbers are summarized in my guide on the average cost of buying and owning a catamaran. It's very similar to this article, so if you like this and are curious about catamaran prices as well, I encourage you to check it out.

Average Cost of Buying & Owning a Catamaran (With 4 Examples)

So let's take a quick look at the costs for owning a sailboat.

One-time costs:

  • Registration : costs of registration differ per state, but usually run anywhere from $3 - $10 per foot.
  • Taxes : differs per state and country. Most governments want you to pay property tax and sales tax. Sales tax is usually about 5%. Property tax varies and is more complex, so I'll leave that up to you to figure out.
  • Trailer : $1,000
  • Sailing club initiation fee : $1,500 - $4,000

Recurring costs:

  • Mooring : $10-15 per foot per year (can be much higher for prime locations)
  • Insurance : typically 1.5% of the total value of the boat. So a $50,000 26' cruiser will cost 750 bucks.
  • Maintenance : a good rule of thumb is 10% of the boat value. Expect to spend anywhere between $500 - $2,500 per year for small to mid-sized boats.
  • Fuel : depends on how much you use the boat and the engine, but on average something between $100 - $150. - Find out how much fuel a sailboat uses in my article here (opens in new tab).
  • International License : if you want to sail on international waters, you have to get your ICC (International Certificate of Competence ). Plan on spending anywhere between 400 to 500 dollars.
  • Safety equipment : plan on spending anywhere between 150 to 600 bucks for lifejackets, first aid kit, and distress signals.
  • Winterize boat : $2,000
  • Sailing club: $800 - $1,500

Cost of owning a boat

Horizon of masts in marina

Maintenance

Your average maintenance cost will be roughly $144 dollars per month for boats under 30', or just under $2,000 per year.

Maintenance involves a lot of hidden costs We took an in-depth look at everything . The result is a comprehensive article that lays it all out for new boat owners. Read all about maintenance costs

Gas engines run for about 1,500 hours, diesel engines run for 5,000. After that, you'll need to change them out.

Most engines will last you about 20 years.

A standard 15HP or 20HP outboard gas engine will cost you about $5,000 - $6,000 and needs replacing every 20 years or so. If you do the work yourself, it's more something like $1,000 - $1,500.

A smaller engine uses less fuel, reducing your total cost You can actually use a pretty small engine for most sailboats. To learn how small (and efficient) you can go, I've written a guide on how to calculate it yourself. Read all about outboard engine size

Replacing the sails and rigging

Most people that own a sailboat will have to replace the sails and rigging at least once in their lifetime. Replacing the mast is uncommon, but if you're unlucky and get demasted, it will need to be fixed. So I've added it to the "be aware this might happen" list - but won't add it to the monthly recurring costs.

If you need to replace the mast and boom, prepare to spend anywhere between $15,000 - $25,000.

I won't go into detail, but I have written a long article about the cost of new sails (opens in new tab). It's a really helpful post (with a formula) if you want to know what to expect.

Good quality cruising sails will need to be replaced every 10 years or so.

The cost of new sails is on average:

  • 26' Bermuda Sloop rig will cost you about $1,000 - $2,500.
  • 34' Bermuda Sloop rig will cost you about $3,000 - $5,000.

The cost of the new rigging is on average:

  • Standing rigging - every 10 years at $4,000
  • Running rigging - every 5-10 years at $5,000

Bottom Paint

Your boat will need bottom paint roughly every 2 years (could be longer, but to be safe, let's keep it at two). It's also called antifouling paint because it helps to protect your hull from weeds, barnacles, and so on. Barnacles can slice through your boat's bellow! So you don't want them on there.

On average, it costs about $15 to $20 per foot to get your sailboat hull painted professionally.

For a 26' sailboat, that's just 500 bucks. Money well spent.

Replacing safety equipment

USCG safety regulations require you to replace safety gear regularly.

  • Lifejackets have to be replaced every 10 years.
  • Flares have to be replaced every 42 months. You could consider buying a LED electric distress light instead, which will last you a lifetime.
  • If you carry a life-raft you'll need to replace that every 12 years as well.

Adhering to the minimum safety requirements shouldn't cost you more than 150 - 250 dollars every 5 years. But if you want the good stuff, need more fire extinguishers, plan on spending more like $600. If you want a life raft, that's another $1,500.

To avoid you have to go cheap on your safety gear, I've put it in the budget for $500.

If you want to know exactly what the USCG safety requirements are, including checklists , definitely check out my article here.

Winterizing your boat

Winterization is an often overlooked cost, but it can be one of the largest expenses each year. If you're like me, and not so lucky to live in Florida, you need to winterize your boat.

Failing to winterize it will increase your maintenance cost over time, as the engine wears out more quickly, and your plumbing and equipment will fall apart. Winter storms and ice can damage the hull and mast as well. Learn all about the dangers of failing to winterize here .

It's the best way to protect your boat in wintertime, period.

It consists of two parts:

  • Winterizing - costs $500 to $1000 - This is the preparation for winter storage. You flush the cooling system with anti-freeze, and the boat gets wrapped in a shrink wrap cover.
  • Winter storage - costs $50 per ft on average

Boat wrapped in white shrink wrap

Some other maintenance costs:

  • Batteries: deep cycle batteries need replacing every 4-6 years at $600
  • Deck hardware: every 20-30 years (bullseyes, tiller, eye straps) at $1,500

Joining a Sailing Club

If you're new to sailing, you might want to consider joining a sailboat club. This might help you to get tips, make friends, and learn in a safe environment. Most clubs also organize races, which are a great way to quickly improve your sailing skills.

But it comes at a cost. Sailing clubs are very expensive.

Initiation fees range anywhere between $1,000 - $4,000. But that's not all.

Then there's an annual fee of $500 - $1,000 per year. And lot's of additional fees: for dining, lockers, etc.

If you're willing to skip Christmas, go for it.

How about making up for some of those losses? There's just no better feeling than earning back all that cash with the same thing that you've spent it on in the first place.

There are lot's of ways to earn a little extra with your boat - if you're willing to put in the effort. Here are a few ideas:

  • hire yourself out as the captain of a personalized cruise (for families, newly-weds, groups of colleagues)
  • take people to go fishing
  • hire your boat out to yacht charter companies
  • teach someone to sail
  • take photographers, film crews, and artists on tours
  • organize dolphin and whale watching tours
  • delivery of cargo - some places just can't be reached by car, for example, the city center of Giethoorn (Dutch Venice). So you have a competitive edge here!

Giethoorn, farmers manors standing besides water way (no road)

Some ideas to save money:

  • install solar panels (no more dock power)
  • buy a and cheap small boat (kayak or someting) to get to offshore anchorage (which are cheaper)
  • shop around for insurance
  • get gas at the gas station, not the marina
  • do your own maintenance as much as possible
  • find a friend with water access to avoid mooring
  • use it a lot (prevents stuff from breaking)
  • fix things that are broken immediately
  • keep your sails out of the sun
  • do your own upgrades
For example, convert your winches to self-tailing yourself. I was really surprised by how cheaply this can be done yourself. Read my article on how to do it here (opens in new tab).

How much does it cost to paint a boat hull? Painting a boat hull with antifouling paint will usually cost between $15 - $20 per feet. For example, a 25-foot sailboat will cost roughly $500. A 35-foot sailboat will cost $800 to repaint. You can get premium paints and services, which can quadruple the cost. Typically, a boat needs to be repainted every two years.

Why are used sailboats so cheap? Sailboats require a lot of skill and patience. They can be quite expensive to maintain and to keep in slip. Some people find they can't afford the marina rent, upkeep, and other costs; sometimes they simply don't want to; others don't want to sail anymore. In some cases, expensive and important parts are missing.

How much does it cost to charter a sailboat? The price of a charter depends on location, size of the vessel, crew or bareboat chartering, and so on. However, on average, a bareboat yacht charter will cost anywhere from $5,000 - $10,000 per week. Crewed charters cost anywhere between $10,000 - $15,000 per week. Superyachts may cost up to $150,000 per week.

Excellent write up. This is honestly the type of information that’s hard to find as you’re trying to get into sailing. I’m a car guy. People think of car collecting like Jay Leno, but it can be done cheaply. I get the impression sailing is the same way.

Shawn Buckles

Hi Stephen, thanks a lot for your kind words, really appreciate it! It really is kind of the same, it’s all about how much time and effort you’re willing to put in. As with anything, lots can be achieved with energy and attention.

Thanks again.

Serious question. Why are you buying a trailer for a 40 ft yacht? That doesn’t even make sense.

Hi Christian, thanks for the remark. 40 ft boat trailers do actually exist, although I agree that most people probably won’t trailer a 40 ft yacht.

Thank a lot for the very useful information„ now you caused me to start thinking why don’t I start sailing lessons to do round the world in a sail boat ( instead of an aircraft)

Hello Hatem, you’re very welcome. Smooth sailing, or flying.

Hi, I am not familiar with boats. My boss just asked me to find a nice boat for him. Thank you for this informative post, this helps me so much. By the way, I already found a site selling yachts here in the Philippines, here’s the link https://rayomarine.com Do you have any suggestion with brand and boat type. Thank you! More power!

Very good information, but I am having a hard time matching these number here in Southern California. Cheapest slip I found so for is $375/month, on a very run down and far from the ocean marina. At the harbor that I want, the cheapest I found is $800/month. Even if I was given a boat for free, just keeping it in place would cost me almost 10k/year

Excellent writeup, Shawn! Thank you very much for all your hard work and I look forward to reading your other articles on the subject.

Great info! We are in the market for our first sailboat and this answered many of our questions. Although I do agree with Rafael that slip prices in Southern California our much higher than what you listed. The marina we like will run about $1000 a month.

Thank you for your artical…a LOT of useful information included in it sir. I have been thinking about buying one for two years now, since I moved to a harbor town near where I grew up. We always had motor boats when I was young. But, I always loved sailing MUCH much more! I love the quiet of it, and always something to do, rather than just sit, drive, gas it up, dock, repeat. Laugh!! It’s about a ten min walk to the marina from here..and I have nothing but time. However my health is pretty bad. I just don’t know if I could handle it all alone. I’m thinking maybe a 25-30 foot cruiser. Thanks again sir!! I look forward to reading your other articles. Sincerely, Gary Heaton Olcott, Ny

Thanks a million! First time I come across an article that complete and with so much effort. For people thinking about buying a boat the info you provide is priceless.

John Callahan

Good information, but any article on prices should have a date associated with it. I see no indication of when this article was posted.

Thank you so much for this well done article. We’re looking at getting a boat and you’ve answered questions we didn’t even know we had.

Awesome article good job i am from Slovenia and thinking about buyng sailboat and sail for 6 monhs per year.I hawe bean looking on Holland sites too buy one can i maybe find auctions too buy a sailingboat i bawe wach Troswijk but they do t hawe any up ther?

Many of the costs quoted look very low to me, especially in the first article. Was this written a long time ago?

Excellent article. Am wondering though how do I dispose of a used boat if I get tired of it and can’t sell it or possibly run it aground. Maybe a 40 ft sloop?

Chris Kenny

Thanks for this infor.

Peace sailing.

Benjamin Sklar

Legacy Island Park, the first of its kind for Fort Myers, is coming this summer

sailboat upholstery cost

Legacy Island Park, a new, unique park near downtown Fort Myers only accessible by water, will be open to the public this summer.

"This is our first park of this nature with the island that we own," said Nicole Setzer, city engineer with the city Fort Myer's public works department. "We are excited for this. This will be a great feature. It's great for our boating public that wants to get out."

The city plans to bring a barge out to the island, along with construction materials, to start working on walkways, stabilizing the shoreline, and adding vegetation like mangroves in time for a July opening of the park.

Since 2018, after a compromise for ownership of the land that is now the Luminary Hotel, the city has been working to develop the isle into a public park.

The under-2-acre island was created from dredging work done several decades ago and is located in the Caloosahatchee River between North Fort Myers and downtown Fort Myers.

Prescribed burn clearing the way for walkways, fresh vegetation

Over time an overgrowth of trees and other plants came to occupy the island's surface, so the city has been spending weeks burning some of the vegetation to make way for construction materials and equipment.

The city plans for one to two more burnings before starting construction.

New vegetation, such as mangroves, will be added to the shorelines.

Previous coverage Fort Myers will develop Caloosahatchee River island into public beach park

Lee County news Lee County secures more than $90 million in state budget for local projects, programs.

Phased opening planned, with first visitors to be welcomed in July

The work for the park will be done in two phases.

It will initially include walkways and shoreline stabilization so residents can use the beach area.

This phase will be completed in July.

There will be no docks in this phase.

"But if they kayak, if they have a shallow drop boat, they can go up on the sand beach, they are welcome to use that," Seltzer said.

The second phase will bring a boat dock facility with five slips, an observation pier, and shaded pavilions.

Visitors will not be allowed to camp overnight. There will be no water or sewer service.

Parks and Recreation will do regular maintenance on the island, and the Fort Myers Police Department's Marine Patrol will patrol the area.

Permits and delays

Setzer said it's taken a long time to get to this point because of the island's origins.

"There was a lot of permitting that was involved in this island," Setzer said. "This is previously a spoil island that's been used when the channel of the Caloosahatchee got dredged, so we had to go through the Corps of Engineers and get their permission to allow it to be a public park."

Additionally work further stalled after Hurricane Ian landed on the shores of Southwest Florida and the equipment necessary for the park's work were unavailable.

"A lot of those barges that were available went out to the barrier islands for hurricane disaster cleanup," Setzer said.

Cost for the project

The cost of the first phase is over $800,000 and will come out of the city's general fund.

There's no cost estimated for the second phase until the city goes out to bid.

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Eastward HO 24

Eastward HO 24 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Walter McInnis and built by C. E. Ryder starting in 1975.

Drawing of Eastward HO 24

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally designed for wood contruction. The hulls of the later, FG version were built by CE Ryder (USA) and finished by Portsmouth Yacht Co. Diesel power was available as an option.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

Biden says Baltimore bridge rebuild should be paid for by the federal government after collapse

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay to rebuild the Baltimore bridge that collapsed early Tuesday after a large cargo ship sailed straight into one of the bridge's support pillars.

"We’re going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," Biden said in brief remarks from the White House before he left for North Carolina.

Biden said that it will take "some time" to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which transverses the Patapsco River, but that he told Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, that he's directing the federal government to "move heaven and earth" to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge "as soon as humanly possible."

He said he also plans to visit Baltimore as "quickly" as he can.

"Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident and all the families — especially those waiting for the news of their loved one right now," Biden said. "I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime. You just don’t know. It’s just terrible."

Biden said that a search and rescue operation is the top priority and that ship traffic and the Port of Baltimore have been suspended until further notice.

The Port of Baltimore, one of the largest shipping hubs in the U.S., is the top port in America for both imports and exports of automobiles and light trucks, Biden said, noting that 850,000 vehicles are moved through the port annually.

"We’re going to get it up and running again as soon as possible. ... Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we’re going to do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers," he said.

He also said that the bridge is "critical for travel," not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor, saying more than 30,000 vehicles cross it daily.

Several vehicles plunged into the water when the collision occurred at 1:30 a.m. ET. At least six people were still believed to be missing, Moore said at a news conference. Sonar used by rescue crews also detected at least five vehicles in the water, he said: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle.

Moore said the ship, the Dali, which had just left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka, notified authorities about a "power issue" on board and issued a mayday moments before the crash. Moore credited that call with saving people's lives.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on Tuesday morning after it was struck by a large container ship.

A video of the incident was posted early on Tuesday morning to X, formerly Twitter. In the video, the container ship the Dali is seen colliding with one of the bridge's support beams. Smoke is seen billowing from the ship before the bridge began crumbling.

"MAJOR BALTIMORE TRAFFIC ALERT: AVOID I-695 southeast corridor. I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in an X post on Tuesday morning.

A representative for the Baltimore Police Department told ABC News that "at 1:35 a.m., Baltimore City police were notified of a partial bridge collapse, with workers possibly in the water, at the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

Emergency services teams, including divers and at least two helicopters, responded to the scene, per Baltimore County's police scanner in the hour and a half after the bridge's collapse.

Wes Moore, governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency early on Tuesday.

He said he was working to "quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," per the BBC.

In a news conference later in the day, Moore said that the crew on the ship notified authorities they had lost power.

Moore told reporters that the ship was moving at a "very rapid speed" and that the call to the authorities stopped a greater disaster from occurring, with cars redirected away from the bridge.

He also said the bridge was "fully up to code" and had no structural issues.

Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland's transportation secretary, told reporters that there were workers on the bridge at the time repairing potholes, and that six people were unaccounted for.

The White House said it was "closely monitoring" the situation, and that there was no indication of any nefarious intent.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who remain missing as a result of this horrific incident," a spokesperson told BI in a statement.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said on X that he had offered the DOT's support to Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

The Baltimore Fire Department estimates that up to 20 people people went into the water, the BBC reported .

Related stories

Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace said at a press conference early Tuesday that two people had been recovered from the water. One refused service, while another was transported to a local trauma center "in very serious condition," he said.

The fire department had not made contact with the ship's captain yet, he said.

A livestream view of the area at around 3:00 a.m. local time showed the bridge's structure partially submerged in the harbor and in several pieces.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported .

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per ABC News.

Structural engineer Ian Firth told the BBC that the heavy ship would have struck the bridge support backed by many thousands of metric tons.

"The support is a very, relatively, flimsy structure when you look at it, it's a kind of trestle structure with individual legs," he told the outlet. "So, the bridge has collapsed simply as a result of this very large impact force."

Barbara Rossi, an engineering professor at the University of Oxford, told BI: "According to what I could see online, the bridge has received a huge impact force on one of its supporting structures."

"The impacting force must have been immense," she said.

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm. The firm confirmed in a statement on Tuesday morning that their vessel had struck one of the bridge's pillars, per TradeWinds .

"All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," read the firm's statement.

It had 22 crew aboard, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement .

According to Grace Ocean, the vessel was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka when the accident took place.

Maersk, the ship's charterer, confirmed that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship. Maersk's spokesperson told BI in a statement that the company is "horrified" by the events, and added that no Maersk employees were on board.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy," it added.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities warned mariners and drone operators to avoid the waters and nearby airspace.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Jr. said in an X post that the authorities "are closely monitoring the ongoing situation at the Key Bridge."

"Our prayers remain with all those impacted," Olszewski wrote.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977 as the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the MDTA .

It cost $60.3 million to build and is 10.9 miles long, per the MDTA.
