What is the line? Seabourn

Name of ship? Odyssey

Passenger occupancy? 458

Itinerary? 7-Day Caribbean Yacht Gems

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Seabourn sits firmly in the luxury tier of cruise lines, and as such you can expect nothing short of exceptional service and attention to detail, as well as an all-inclusive fare. They have a loyal following—while onboard, I sat in on a milestone ceremony to recognize repeat guests, starting with those who had sailed more than 100 days with the line.

Tell us about the ship in general

With a passenger capacity below 500 and more than 300 crew, you won’t find yourself waiting for a thing. Built in 2009, it was designed by Petr Yran and Bjorn Storbraaten, the same architectural team who designed Seabourn’s earliest ships, and feels more like a superyacht than a cruise ship.

Who is onboard?

More of a mix than you might think, age wise—youngish honeymooners, couples celebrating anniversaries, multi-generational families of adult children, parents, and grandparents. This is a crowd that appreciates the finer things in life, particularly in travel, name-dropping experiences at Michelin-starred restaurants and top-of-the-line resorts.

Describe the cabins (Where you stayed and a brief overview of what else is available to book)

The highlights of my Veranda Suite were numerous: there was the walk-in closet, the biggest I had ever seen; the full size bathtub and separate shower; and the spacious balcony to start. An entryway vanity gave me a place to get ready outside of the bathroom; while I was traveling solo, I can see how it would be helpful for two passengers to have some more elbow room. The living space feels distinct from the sleeping area, and can be separated by a curtain when you’d like. As for design, the light woods and neutral color palette (think lots of tans and taupes) create a serene environment, and let the view be the star of the show.

One tier down, Ocean View cabins have a similar layout to Veranda Suites, but with a picture window in place of a balcony. On the other end of the spectrum, there are the multi-room Penthouse Suite and Owners Suite.

Shower products come from Molton Brown, London, with a signature scent created exclusively for Seabourn—you’ll want to take a few home with you.

Tell us about the crew

Seabourn’s service really can’t be beat, and is at the crux of its identity—“The Seabourn Experience,” as it’s dubbed, means you’ll be greeted by a formal yet incredibly warm group of personnel; almost immediately, they’ll know your name, food and beverage preferences, and schedule, and won’t hesitate to fulfill any special requests you may have. One Seabourn loyalist told me they stock a specific type of vodka just for her sailings, and another described a cocktail party thrown for her and her partner’s anniversary.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Food and beverage is included in the fare, which means you won’t have to bother with keeping tabs on expenses. For a small ship, there are a healthy amount of options, all of which can be visited without reservations, save for The Grill by Thomas Keller and select nights at The Colonnade—the former is a high-demand spot, so you’d be wise to make an online reservation before you board. Once there, don’t skip the mac and cheese or the tableside Caesar salad. The Colonnade is a casual spot open for buffet or table service breakfast and lunch, with regionally-themed table-service dinners; the Indian Market night was particularly good. A seat at the family-style dinner influenced by Chef Keller can be reserved once onboard; I’m still thinking about the hickory smoked BBQ ribs.

At The Restaurant, Seabourn’s classic formal dining room, there’s no assigned seating; food from here can be delivered to your room (or veranda!) at any time. The other in-suite dining need-to-know: caviar and Champagne is ready and waiting to be delivered any time of day.

Lastly, don’t overlook The Patio for poolside meals; the Yountwurst dog is a favorite here, as is the Napa Burger, both developed by Keller; at night it becomes Earth + Ocean.

Unexpectedly but much welcomed was the incredible seafood—I think I had lobster in some form every day I was onboard.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Seabourn’s spa and wellness program was developed with Dr. Andrew Weil , who researches and writes about integrative medicine, giving equal weight to physical, social, environmental, and spiritual well-being. Each Seabourn ship has a certified yoga and meditation instructor onboard, and along with the usual spa offerings, there are options like the Earth Grounding or Mindful Living Massages.

Activities and entertainment

The ship isn’t teeming with activities in the way large ships are, but you won’t find yourself bored. The main pool on deck eight is flanked by two hot tubs; there’s another smaller, quieter pool area on deck five. There’s the aforementioned spa, a casino and card room, and evening entertainment in the form of dancing, shows, live music, and Movies Under the Stars. I was especially pleased by the Marina Day, which took place during a sea day on my cruise; thanks to the ship’s retractable marina platform, you can walk downstairs and hop directly into the waster on a kayak, paddleboard, or banana boat. Active travelers can take yoga, Pilates, or tai chi classes. However you fill your days, make sure to head to the bow of the ship on deck six at some point; there’s a hot tub with incredible views tucked away up there.

How was the experience for families?

Children are allowed to sail, though with no kids club or facilities, the line isn’t really geared toward families, and you won’t see many onboard.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My seven-night Itinerary included stops in St Lucia, Dominica, St Maarten, St Kitts, and Barbados. Roseau, Dominica was a highlight for me; I’d highly recommend the adrenaline-inducing Seven Waterfalls Canyoning Adventure for anyone seeking some adventure. Another unforgettable outing was Caviar in the Surf: one of Seabourn’s signature experiences, team members dressed in beach whites serve caviar and Champagne from a surfboard bar in the waves at Carambola Beach. I’m hard pressed to imagine an outdoor dining experience that feels more extravagant. Afterward, there’s a barbecue lunch and water toys to play with, as well as a beach full of lounge chairs to relax on.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Seabourn’s latest Sustainability Report , published in 2020, outlines the line’s commitment to sustainable tourism, waste reduction, conservation efforts, DEI, climate action, and health and well-being as pertains to both its crew and guests.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

For travelers who want everything taken care of, with as personalized a cruise experience as possible, book Seabourn.

2024 Cruise Line Reviews

Seabourn Review

  • Best for all-inclusive luxury sailing for adults
  • Curated voyages to all seven continents
  • Five ships in the fleet
  • Smaller ships enable visits to hidden harbors and marquee ports
  • Staff-to-guest ratio of nearly 1:1
  • Maximum of 458-600 guests per sailing
  • Private balconies in most suites, all suites are oceanfront

Seabourn is known for its small-ship, ultra-luxury cruising experience. Its fleet of five ships carry anywhere from 458 to 600 passengers, and most suites feature a private veranda. If you want to cruise in relaxed luxury, a Seaborn sailing might be perfect for you, especially with the nearly 1:1 ratio of staff to guests. And, almost anywhere you could dream of visiting -from the Arctic to the Antarctic and literally everywhere else - chances are good that there's a Seabourn cruise that goes there.

Take a winter getaway in the Caribbean

In order to compare cruise lines, we looked at each company's offerings for a week-long Caribbean sailing in March - peak season for spring breakers and anyone trying to escape a long winter - about a year in advance. Seabourn had four week-long sailings, four 14-day sailings, and one 21-day sailing. Almost all of them departed from Barbados, so you'd have to factor in the international flights as part of your vacation planning. Two sailings finished in Miami, though, so at least the return would be a domestic flight for travelers from the US. Pricing on the week-long sailing started at $4,339 per person, and itineraries included Classic Caribbean Yacht Harbors (Bequia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Maarten), Yachtsman's Caribbean (many of the same ports, with the addition of Dominica), and Windward Island Jewels (Tobago, St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigua, and St. Kitts).

Mostly-included amenities

Seabourn is described as all-inclusive. That means your sailing will come with complimentary dining venues, open bars and fine wines at both lunch and dinner, unlimited WiFi, and no gratuities are required (or expected). You'll also experience the Seabourn Signature Delights, ranging from Caviar in the Surf during beach barbecues ashore to Massage Moments on deck and much more. On the other hand, some features included by other all-inclusive luxury cruise lines are fee-based with Seabourn, most notably the shore excursions.

Entertainment is more low-key

Another area where Seabourn comes up a little light is onboard entertainment. As with any smaller cruise ships, you shouldn't sail with this cruise line expecting Broadway-size shows: there just isn't a venue for it. What you can expect in the Grand Salon are cabaret performances, classical recitals, live music for dancing, cooking demonstrations, and movies, among other gatherings.

Best Cruise Lines

The dining trends American

In terms of dining, Seabourn offers a partnership with Chef Thomas Keller, who has developed a menu of classic American dishes for the line's restaurants. The line also features The Grill by Thomas Keller, which offers a classic steakhouse experience. You may even be able to take advantage of "Shopping with the Chef" for fresh ingredients at local markets, if you love all things culinary. In addition to these dining options, Seabourn offers an innovative program called "Seabourn Conversations", where guests can engage with experts in various fields such as food and wine, history, culture, and more.

How about a more high-octane port experience?

Perhaps you're more on the adventurous side. Be sure to look into Ventures by Seabourn, optional shore excursions that help you get up close and personal with your destinations: hop on a Zodiac, paddle a kayak, or take an exploratory hike, all guided by Expedition Team members you've already met onboard and learned from during formal presentations and casual conversations.

A good option but compare with rival luxury lines first

While Seabourn has plenty of loyal cruisers, we also found some travelers who felt that there wasn't enough included for the fare they paid. Some felt that the ships seemed a bit outdated, and even we noticed that the "all-inclusive" features of Seabourn weren't as robust as what comparable luxury lines offered. If you're looking for a luxury cruise that can access smaller ports and harbors, and you find your destination on Seabourn's list, there's no reason not to book your trip. But, we'd recommend looking at this cruise line's higher-ranked competitors in the luxury tier too, just in case you could get a little more for your fare.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Seabourn cruise ship

Gene Sloan

Where can you go on a Seabourn cruise ship? Just about everywhere in the world. Despite having just six vessels, the small luxury line operates voyages to more than 100 countries on all seven continents, from North America and Europe to Australia and Antarctica.

In other words, its ships are often on the move from region to region.

Among all the Seabourn cruise destinations, Europe may be the most popular. As is often the case with luxury lines, Seabourn has a particularly large footprint when it comes to Europe itineraries, with more than half of the 500-plus voyages currently on its schedule focused on either the Mediterranean or Northern Europe. In a typical year, the line will deploy five of its six ships to Europe during the summer months.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Seabourn also typically deploys at least one of its vessels to Alaska in the summer.

In the winter, Seabourn moves at least two of its vessels to the Caribbean and South America while basing another ship in Asia and a fourth vessel in Australia. A fifth vessel is typically sent on an around-the-world voyage during winter.

In just the last year, Seabourn also has begun to base a ship during the winter at the southern tip of South America for regular sailings to Antarctica — a move made possible by the 2022 debut of its first expedition ship, Seabourn Venture . The vessel was specially built to operate in polar regions and also sails in the Arctic.

A seventh Seabourn vessel, Seabourn Pursuit, is due to debut in late 2023, allowing for an even more diverse array of itineraries.

As of now, among Seabourn's itinerary lineup, there's everything from seven-night cruises in the Caribbean to 145-night globe-circling voyages. The company generally doesn't do short sailings of just three or four nights, unlike mass-market lines.

Overwhelmed with the choices? Here are our picks for the five best Seabourn cruise destinations.

The Mediterranean

yachts of seabourn reviews

The No. 1 Seabourn cruise destination is the Mediterranean . As of the publishing of this story, a whopping 218 of the 505 voyages on the line's schedule for 2023, 2024 and 2025 included calls in the region. That's 43% of all Seabourn itineraries.

The Mediterranean trips offer a wide range of port stops and vary greatly in length. There is everything from relatively short, seven-night sailings around the sunny Greek islands to monthlong voyages that span the entire width of the Mediterranean from Istanbul to the Strait of Gibraltar and offer lots of opportunities for cultural immersion.

Seabourn features voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean, voyages focused specifically on the Eastern Mediterranean and voyages that include days traveling beyond the edges of the Mediterranean to such places as the Canary Islands.

Typical of the latter is the line's epic, 28-night "Mediterranean Rivieras and Canary Islands" routing, a one-way trip between Barcelona, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal, that brings a wide mix of stops in Spain, France, Italy, Monaco, Morocco and Portugal. It's a deep exploration into the western side of Europe and North Africa.

Related: The best Mediterranean cruise for every type of traveler

Some of Seabourn's Mediterranean itineraries also include a passage through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea for visits to Egypt and Jordan.

Typical of the line's more focused, quickie Mediterranean itineraries is a seven-night "Jewels of the Dalmatian Coast" routing out of Dubrovnik, Croatia, that concentrates on the narrow span of coastline along Croatia and Slovenia with five stops in the countries.

In the Mediterranean, the line's main hubs are Barcelona; Monaco; Civitavecchia and Fusina, Italy (located near Rome and Venice, respectively); Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); and Istanbul.

Northern Europe

yachts of seabourn reviews

In any given year, Seabourn offers far fewer sailings in Northern Europe than in the Mediterranean. But they are some of the line's most interesting itineraries. They include unusually long voyages that focus intensely on the United Kingdom, voyages that focus almost entirely on Norway and a growing number of off-the-beaten-path sailings far north into the Arctic Circle that include adventurous landings by Zodiac boat in Iceland and Greenland.

Among the latter set of trips are epic, monthlong voyages into the Arctic out of Reykjavik (such as the 30-night "Greenland Wild Shores, Vikings & Volcanoes" voyage scheduled for the summer of 2023) that bring expedition-style Zodiac boat landings along both the east and west coast of Greenland over several weeks. They take place on the line's new Seabourn Venture, which was specifically built for adventurous exploring in polar regions.

The line also operates some weekslong Arctic voyages that start in Iceland and Greenland and extend all the way into the fabled, ice-filled Northwest Passage above Canada.

Still, Seabourn's Northern Europe itineraries aren't all of such an extended nature. The line also offers a mix of shorter voyages in the region that are perfect for someone looking to test out the line. They include short, seven-night trips out of Copenhagen and Reykjavik that offer a quick taste of Iceland.

Note that Seabourn traditionally also has offered voyages around the Baltic Sea that visit such classic Baltic ports as Helsinki and Stockholm, and have included overnight stays in St. Petersburg, Russia — the latter considered the highlight of any Baltic cruise. However, in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Seabourn has eliminated all its sailings to the Baltic as part of removing Russia from its itinerary schedule.

Whether the Baltic and St. Petersburg will return as Seabourn cruise destinations in coming years will depend on whether there is a resolution to the conflict.

In Northern Europe, Seabourn ships mostly sail out of Dover, England; Copenhagen; and Reykjavik.

Seabourn typically sends one of its six ships to Asia every winter for Asia-focused sailings out of Singapore and Hong Kong.

The line also typically sends a second ship on an around-the-world cruise that includes multiple segments in Asia, resulting in two of the line's ships sailing in Asia during parts of the winter.

For the coming year, most of the line's itineraries in Asia will be 14-night voyages to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, with some voyages also including stops in Malaysia.

Seabourn destinations visited on such trips typically include Laem Chabang (the port for Bangkok) and Ko Kood, Thailand; Sihanoukville, Cambodia; and Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Halong Bay in Vietnam.

Asia-focused segments of the line's around-the-world cruises vary from year to year. In 2024, they will include a 33-night trip from Sydney, Australia, to Taipei, Taiwan, that brings a heavy focus on Indonesia and the Philippines.

A second, 39-night segment of the same world cruise from Taipei to Singapore will bring stops in Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

Seabourn isn't a huge player in Caribbean cruises , unlike its sister company Carnival Cruise Line . However, it typically sends at least one or two vessels to the region every winter to operate warm-weather-focused getaways to lesser-visited Caribbean ports.

For the most part, Seabourn's lineup of Caribbean cruises is focused on one-way, seven-night trips between the islands of Barbados and St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin).

When sailing outbound from Barbados, the trips typically bring stops at the islands of St. Vincent, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Nevis, Antigua and St. Kitts. On the return to Barbados, the itinerary is a bit different, with stops at Tortola, Anguilla, St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia and Grenada.

The two itineraries can be combined to create one long, 14-night sailing that has relatively little overlap in stops.

In addition, the line often operates an epic voyage to South America out of Miami every winter that brings stops in the Caribbean in addition to a complete circumnavigation of South America. The next such voyage, an 80-night trip, is scheduled to start Jan. 4, 2024, and will include calls at Barbados, Martinique, Antigua, St. Kitts and Puerto Rico.

A shorter, 27-night segment of the above voyage that includes only the Caribbean portion of the trip, as well as stops in Brazil, also is available.

Seabourn has recently gone big in cruises to Antarctica with the unveiling of Seabourn Venture — a polar-class vessel that was specifically built to sail in the region as well as the Arctic.

As of this year, the 264-passenger expedition ship is spending multiple months every winter sailing to Antarctica out of Ushuaia, Argentina. It'll soon be joined by a second vessel in the same series, Seabourn Pursuit.

The vessels are offering Antarctica itineraries that range from 11-night trips that focus on the Antarctic Peninsula to 29-night trips that add stops in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island.

Like several other upscale lines that have gone into Antarctica voyages in recent years, Seabourn is targeting a high-end customer that wants to explore the continent in style. Seabourn Venture features high-end restaurants serving elegant cuisine crafted in part by leading American chef Thomas Keller, and every room on the ship is a suite with its own balcony — something that isn't often the case with expedition ships.

In addition, Seabourn Venture offers a lot of high-end adventures. Outdoor equipment includes kayaks and Zodiac boats for landings along Antarctica's shoreline to visit penguin colonies. But perhaps the ship's standout adventure feature is its two, six-person submarines.

Related: This is what's it like diving under the waves in Seabourn's submarine

The vessel also has a high-definition Cineplex camera that can pick up wildlife like a polar bear up to 4 miles away, streaming the footage into an onboard "discovery center" while leaving the wildlife undisturbed.

Bottom line

Seabourn is a relatively small cruise line with just six ships, but you'll find a wide array of Seabourn cruise destinations. The line is known for regularly moving its vessels around the world to offer a diverse lineup of itineraries everywhere from North America and Europe to Asia and Australia. Plus, in the last year, Seabourn's destination roster has grown to include Antarctica and the Arctic, as well.
