St Malo has some of the best beaches not only in Brittany but across France. When the sun is beaming, there is no better place to be than a picture-perfect St Malo beach, where you can take a dip in the dazzling waters and admire the unbelievable views. With a selection of unique beaches to choose from we can assure you that there will be a beach that suits you or your family’s needs. It is a remarkable experience to bathe on one of the many St Malo beaches with hundreds of years of history as your backdrop.

We have done the hard work for you and selected some of the top beaches in & near St Malo for you to explore.

Fort National

2. Fort National

Good for: Families / History

This imposing fortress stands above a maze of subterranean walkways and chambers. Guided tours offer the best way to take it all in, the perfect opportunity to learn more about the rich history of this distinctive site. Swim in the crystal-clear waters with the remarkable historic monument in the background, an experience like no other. The Fort can be accessed during low tide by a pleasant walk across the sand and a short causeway. It is important to research tidal times before planning your visit as the difference between low and high tide is significant.

Location – Fort National, Saint Malo, France

Top Beaches in & near St Malo

Plage du Sillon.jpg

1. Grand Plage (Plage du Sillon)

Good for: Families / Couples / Swimming / Watersports / Surfing

Grand Plage is St.Malo’s largest beach, offering 3km of golden sand. This beach can be divided into separate sections. The first is Place du Sillon, this is the largest and most popular beach which backs onto Saint Malo. If you continue down the stretch, you will find the beach of Rochebonne and the beach of Hoguette which are within the town of Paramé. These are popular choices amongst visitors who choose to stay outside the walls of the city. The wind picks up along the Grande Plage offering good conditions for a variety of watersports. All the beaches are patrolled by lifeguards, there are also an assortment of restaurants and facilities close by.

Location – Grand Plage, Saint Malo, France.

3. Petit Bé

Petit Bé is a private tidal island outside the walls of Saint-Malo and is home to a 17 th -century fort. The well-preserved Fort du Petit Bé, dating back to the reign of Louis XIV, was recently opened to visitors and contains cannons and an exhibition on tides. It is vital that you check the tide schedule before venturing out as you don’t want to get caught on the island. In high season you can take a guided tour of Fort of Le Petit Bé to learn more about its fascinating history. Beyond Grand Bé is the smaller island of Petit Bé which is still accessible by foot at low tide.

Location – Petit Bé Island, near Bon-Secours beach, Saint Malo, France

4. Ile Du Grande Bé

Grande Bé is another tidal island located near St Malo and is situated at the mouth of the River Rance. The islet can be reached by foot but take care when visiting as it can only be reached by a path during low tide. The main reason tourists make the walk to Grand Bé is to see the resting place of St-Malo's famous son, the French politician and romantic writer, Chateaubriand. Once on the island you have the most phenomenal view facing towards the Emerald Coast and the walls of St Malo.

Location - Grande Bé Island, near Bon-Secours beach, Saint Malo, France.

5. Plage De Bon Sécours

Good for: Families / Swimming

An expansive seawater pool – Piscine de Bon Sécours – dominates this popular large beach. The pool is perfect for high tide swims and is even equipped with a diving board that is revealed during the lowering of the tide. The seawater pool was built in 1937 and has been extremely popular amongst locals and tourists ever since. The pool is safely enclosed and patrolled by a lifeguard making it ideal for families and those who do not like open waters. Take in the view of the bay of St Malo and enjoy a delicious crêpe at a nearby Creperie for the ultimate French experience.

Location - Plage De Bon Sécours, Saint-Malo, France

plage-de-leventail.png

6. Plage De L’Eventail

Good for: Families / Couples / History / Swimming / Dogs

Outside the northern walls of St-Malo is the Plage de l'Eventail which is the rockiest of the Old Town's three beaches. It links up with the Grande Plage at Fort National. It is sheltered by the walls and can be accessed by the Porte Saint-Thomas or the Sillon. The beach is popular amongst families and swimmers due to its large stretch of sand and impressive views. Plage De L’Eevntail is slightly quieter than the likes of the Grande Plage and it is said to be the Romantic writer Chateaubriand's favourite beach in St Malo. Dogs are prohibited from 01/04 to 30/09.

Location - Plage De L’Eventail, Saint Malo, France

7. Plage Du Môle

Good for: Families / Couples / Swimming / Dogs

Couched between the Môles de Noires jetty and the Bastion de La Hollande, this fairly small beach is well sheltered and scenic and is hugely popular during the summer months. It is the perfect spot for a refreshing swim and can be combined with a city tour due to its excellent location, as it is right under the city walls! There are lifeguards on patrol during high season and because of its smaller size it is easier to keep an eye on the little ones. Dogs are prohibited from 01/04 to 30/09.

Location - Plage Du Môle, Saint Malo, France.

8. Plage de Minihic

Good for: Families / Dogs / Bathing / Swimming

This supervised beach spreads west of Rochbonne Point, between Paramé and Rothéneuf. Minihic Beach is an extension of Grande Plage and Pont Beach which is burrowed against Varde point. It is only a short drive from the city centre and offers a more remote and wilder alternative to other beaches closer to the walls. It lays beneath a small green cliff so take care going down the steps to get to the beach. The beach offers a selection of facilities, during peak season there is a summer aid station and there are also toilets available. During the winter months dogs are free to roam but are prohibited from 01/04 to 30/09.

Location - Plage du Minihic, Saint Malo, France.

9. Plage du Val

Good for: Families / Walking / Bathing / Swimming

All St Malo beaches are truly remarkable and Plage du Val is no exception. The beach is situated near the residential area of Rothéneuf, a popular seaside resort well known for its sculpted rocks. Nearby, on the cliffs of Rothéneuf, you will find 300 bizarre faces carved into the rocks by the hermit Adolphe Julien Fouéré. The delightful stretch of fine sands is popular amongst families and there is a lifeguard in the summer to help supervise. There are a variety of services available including disabled facilities, toilets, portable water and a rescue station. Beaches are forbidden for dogs from April 1st to September 30 th .

Location – Plage du Val, Saint Malo, France.

10. Le Havre de Rotheneuf

Good for: Families / Walking / Swimming / Dogs

The cove of Le Havre de Rotheneuf is situated on the banks of Le Havre du Lupine which is on the border of Saint-Coulomb and Saint Malo. During low tide the beach completely dries up and a large stretch of sand appears to Besnard Island, which is why you can only swim during high tide. This is also the reason as to why the beach often houses sea kayaks, small catamarans and pleasure boats. The beach often becomes segmented into a selection of different small coves separated by rocks due to its tidal ranges. It is very popular with families because of the low current and dogs are prohibited from 01/04 to 30/09.

Location – Le Havre de Rotheneuf, Saint Malo, France.

11. Plage de l’Ecluse, Dinard

Good for: Families / Couples / Swimming

For one of the best beaches near St Malo, Plage de l’Ecluse can’t be missed. In the 19 th century you would have brushed shoulders with the likes of Oscar Wilde and Picasso when visiting Dinard, otherwise known as “The Pearl of the Emerald Coast”. The seaside resort is only a short 20-minute drive from St Malo, perfect if you are after somewhere a bit different. The white and blue striped beach tents add a unique touch to the beach and are available to hire if you prefer privacy and tranquility. There are also umbrellas, deck chairs and a variety of beachside activities available throughout high season. Settle down for a relaxing day at the beach, bask in the gorgeous sun and take a dip in the glistening waters.

Location - Plage de l’Ecluse, Dinard, France.

12. Plage de l’Anse du Guesclin

Good for: Families / Couples / History / Dogs

This supervised beach in Saint-Coulomb is one of the most beautiful beaches on the East coast and offers a natural setting to wind down. The velvety sand is bordered by a hill of greenery and the glistening water is perfect for cooling down in the summer months. Plage de l’Anse du Guesclin is only a short 20-minute drive from St Malo. In the distance is the beautiful Fort de Guesclin which was once inhabited by Léo Ferré in 1968 and is still privately owned, this can be reached during low tide. The beach can still be enjoyed during high tide and there is lifeguard supervision in the summer. Dogs are prohibited from 15/06 to 15/09, however, they are allowed before 10am and after 8pm.

Location - Plage de l’Anse du Guesclin, Saint-Coulomb, France.

13. Plage de Cherrueix

Good for: Families / Swimming / Dogs / Fishing

For a perfect day out with the family head to Plage de Cherrueix, the vast stretch of sand has magical views of Mont Saint Michel which can be seen on clear days. There is a wonderful play area for children close by and the water is ideal for swimming during high tide. The beach is very quiet in comparison to beaches in St Malo, ideal for those who want a bit of peace on their family day out. Plage de Cherrueix is very popular amongst shore fishing and sand yachting fanatics, a great source of entertainment for the young ones. It is a 40-minute drive away from St Malo and perfect to stop by on your way to the Mont St Michel. Animals are accepted but please be aware that this beach is unsupervised.

Location - Plage de Cherrueix, Cherrueix, France.

14. Plage de Port Mer

Just a half an hour drive from St Malo you will find the picture-perfect Port Mer, the ultimate destination on a summer’s day. The beach is reasonably sized and is often considered more of a family beach. If you wish to explore some incredible nearby marine life you can embark on an adventure to discover the nearby dolphins. The attractive fishing village of Cancale offers incredible views of the Baie du Mont St Michel and serves the most remarkable Cancale oysters at the local restaurants. The oyster beds are uncovered at low tide and over 15,000 tonnes are produced annually. Please take care as this beach is unsupervised.

Location - Plage de Port Mer, Cancale, France.

St Malo can be easily reached by ferry from the south coast of England and from the Channel Islands. When you hop off the ferry you’ll be on the doorstep of the picturesque St Malo greeted by the fortifications that surround the old town. From nine years old, the whole family can try sand yachting in a single or two-seater. The same goes for catamarans. With a little bit of control, you can sail under spinnaker under the ramparts. Sensations guaranteed! And why not try windsurfing? While the parents are having fun, the little ones enjoy the trampolines of the beach club, the older ones go on a foam or sailor course. char à voile saint-malo

The Session

You will have the choice between :

1 - The one hour session for those who want to discover the marked path independently on a one or a two-seater sand yacht to share a fun moment your family of your friends.

2 - To improve yourself outside the introduction path, the Avel center of sand yacht can organise a one hour and a half session or a 2 hours session to discover the  bay of Mont Saint-Michel  with a monitor. If the weather is not good, we propose another path in order to study how to drive with the wind.

The course  will be materialized by studs and flags, facilitating the driving of the sand yacht. A stop zone will be materialized to avoid any risk during the traffic.

The content of the sessions will always be adapted to the public, so as to provide quick sensations of driving, a source of pleasure and to transmit the main principles of the activity.

To ensure an ideal security , it is necessary to be located near the walkers present on the shore. In consequences, the position of the reception on the car park allows an optimal communication, leading to a compromise between pedestrians and our activity. Indeed, the activity takes place on a public site, priority remains for pedestrians. For that purpose, the routes must be arranged so that the user of the shore can cohabit with us. The course will be highlighted by the use of tags.

char à voile saint-malo

The activity

The introduction and the  discovery of  sand yacht  aim to teach beginners how to drive safely for the user but also for the others, through the speed control and the direction of the sand yacht. Users must adapt the speed of their sand yacht according to the possible circumstances.

The certificate  must transcribe the safety rules for a good sand yacht session . It also has to determinate the technical vocabulary of the activity to create a specific and common language. It is important to keep a safety margin for each action taken. It is important to study theweather conditions to anticipate the evolution of the route. By adapting ourselves permanently to the public and the environment, the certificate builds its path and its session.

This is why the change of tack is always made in direction of the sand and the jibing towards the sea. The jibing is a change of tack with the back to the wind which is difficult for the beginner. And the change of tack is made facing the wind. This position facing the wind is a way to stop progressively its sand yacht because the sail is no more propulsive which allows a better control. The stop area is located at the buoy where you can do your change of tack.

Moreover, a parallel circuit can be installed to respect the improvement  of each person and guarantee the safety. The monitor must check that nobody is in the leeward area of the circuit because this is where the sand yacht can go if the driver looses control.

The ancient walled city of Saint Malo is located in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine and is the most visited place in Brittany, north western France.    Situated on the  English Channel, the port has famously been the centre of seafaring adventurers and today still retains a jaunty air with a plethora of sailing boats and the romance of the sea.  The ramparts which surround the picturesque streets and shops are a reminder of the town’s glorious past, combining Saint Malo’s rich heritage with the delights of an attractive seaside resort.  Heavily damaged during the Second World War, the town has been carefully restored and offers visitors plenty of interesting places to explore and excellent restaurants.

Within the walls of the atmospheric old city, known as La Ville Intra-Muros,  the cobbled streets bring you into a busy, lively and very characterful town full of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.   The vast, sandy beaches of the Emerald coast are very popular with families who come to enjoy swimming in environmentally clean waters, sand yachting and wind-surfing.

The resident population of Saint Malo is approximately 53,000 but, during the summer tourist season, this can increase to 200,000 making reservations for accommodation a sensible precaution.  Inhabitants of Saint Malo are colloquially called ‘Malouins’.

Rent a chateau in brittany.

Saint Malo was founded in the 1st century BC, a short distance south of its current location.  The fort at Aleth, in what is now St. Servan, was built by Celtic tribesmen to guard the approaches to the Rance River.   The Romans further fortified this site but its more recent history traces Saint Malo’s origins to a monastic settlement in the 6th century.  Originally, in the Middle Ages, Saint Malo was a fortified island at the mouth of the  Rance River, controlling the estuary and the open sea beyond.  The rock of Saint Malo was only connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway of sand and it was this natural defence that encouraged the population to move away to escape Viking raids.

Traditionally, the settlers of Saint Malo had an adversarial  tradition with the French authorities – and even with its Breton neighbours.  From 1490 to 1493 it declared itself to be an independent republic.    It became notorious as the home of corsairs, French privateers and pirates making a passage through international waters treacherous.  The corsairs not only forced English ships passing up the Channel to pay tribute but also brought wealth from further abroad, including the Americas and especially Canada, by pillaging foreign ships.  Worldwide trade brought extravagant prosperity and at one point the Malouin merchants held 25% of all the gold in France.

The 20th century saw the city almost completely destroyed.   In late 1944, General Patton’s US 3rd Army, advancing into western France, laid siege to the town and it was only through large scale bombardment that the German army was dislodged.   Nearly 30 years of restoration has returned Saint Malo to its former glory and transformed it into one of the most popular tourist destinations in France.

Attractions

To get the full picture of Saint Malo’s past, spend an interesting couple of hours walking along the 12th Century stone ramparts.   Looking across the Citadel, you will see several huge town houses representing the old governmental quarter of the city as well as numerous quirky little alleyways.  The Privateer’s House (La Demeure de Corsaire), a ship-owner’s town house built in 1725, exhibits objects relating to privateering, weaponry and model ships.  Whilst walking through the old town, visit the Cathedral of Saint Vincent which has beautiful stained glass windows and exudes a wonderful feeling of calm amidst the bustling city.

Gazing out to sea you will get an amazing view of the rocky Emerald coast and, at low tide, you can reach the Fort National by foot across the sands.  This is a formidable offshore fortress (in fact, two) with substantial dungeons built in 1689 to protect the city.

Saint Malo is France’s largest marina and it is a regular host to The Tall Ships Races bringing back memories of the town’s maritime heritage.  The colourful harbour is full of hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes, several of which are historically interesting.  A trip on an old sailing vessel with Compagnie Corsair around the bay is a memorable way to view Saint Malo on its promontory.  Restaurants and cafés are plentiful along the beach promenade to the east and this is a good place to relax after a walking tour.     Brasserie du Sillon is popular and Les Embrons close by have fantastic views of the sea and offer a wide range of fresh seafood and meat dishes.

The Château de Saint Malo is called the Bastille of the West.  Built as a seat of power, it has barrack facades and is now the town hall.  Its towers house the Musée de’l’Histoire de Saint Malo.  This interesting museum documents the history of the city including maps and testimonies to its past including piracy, colonialism, slave trading and the German occupation during World War II.   The Mémorial 39-45, a museum commemorating the Second World War, is located in the bunker of a German anti-air gun complex, built inside the courtyard of an old French fort, which is well worth a visit.

The Great Aquarium Saint Malo is of particular interest for children as is The Labarinthe du Corsaire (an attraction park).  For those who love the sea, Saint Malo’s Surf School has tuition for sand-yachting or wind-surfing along the main two mile beach.

Accommodation & Restaurants

Brittany is not renowned for the production of local wines however there are other specialities including Breton beer, Cider, Calvados (apple brandy) and Chouchen which is mead (a very sweet mixture of alcohol and honey).  Breton pancakes (Crêpes) are delicious and can be savoury as well as sweet.  ‘Kouing Aman’ which is a cake made with butter and sugar, served piping hot, is a local delicacy often made with apple baked in the middle.

Seafood is at its best in Saint Malo and often accompanied by Muscadet, a dry white wine from the nearest vineyard region of Pays de la Loire.  It is particularly famous for its succulent oysters from the nearby village of Cancale.

Saint Malo has one of the highest concentration of restaurants in Europe, many of which are concentrated within the Citadel including several crêperies and fish restaurants which are often good quality and relatively inexpensive.  Crêperie le Tournesol at 4 Rue des Marins offers a typical Breton menu.    A drink in the Bar des Voyageurs at L’Univers Hotel could be a prelude to dinner at Le Chalut, a Michelin rated fish restaurant or, less expensively, at Café Simon or Le Bistro de Jean.

For a first class meal in an old fashioned traditional French restaurant, try La Duchesse Anne which has two Michelin stars.  Alternatively, Delaunay at 6 Rue Sainte Barbe serves excellent French cuisine in refined surroundings.  Great emphasis is put on the freshest local produce and fine wines.

Most visitors opt for hotels within the Citadel walls as this is also the centre for nightlife and a vibrant selection of bars, restaurants and cafés.  Hotel Chateaubriand is in the liveliest square of the same name.  The rooms are elegantly furnished and those on the upper floors have sea views over the city walls.  A top class restaurant with a terrace for summer dining serves traditional terroir dishes and there is a nautically themed bar.

There are also some good hotels along the seafront towards Parame.  The 4 star Hotel Oceania is situated on Sillon beachfront, approximately 200 metres from the Citadel.  Hotel Beaufort is on the promenade with a bar and an excellent restaurant overlooking the beach and Bay of Saint Malo.  The  luxury 5 star Grand Hôtel des Thermes is a relaxing establishment with fine dining in a selection of restaurants and access to the spa facilities next door.

By ferry:  Saint Malo is a terminal for ferry services to Poole, Portsmouth, Weymouth and from the Channel Islands.

By train:  Gare de Saint-Malo offers direct TGV services to Rennes, Paris and several regional destinations.   Direct trains to Paris take about 3 hours but most travellers take connections from Rennes where there are hourly commuter services which take just under an hour.

By air:  The town is served by the Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport.

Great Brittany: exploring the Emerald Coast

With its belle époque resorts, long empty beaches and medieval castles, the Emerald Coast is big on laid-back charm – and perfect for a family adventure

  • 10 of Brittany’s best B&Bs and hotels

W e’re sitting on an empty beach, a wide sweep of white sand overlooking the emerald sea, and we can’t quite believe we have it all to ourselves. Had we flown to far-flung shores and taken a boat to a remote island, it would be understandable, but all we’ve done is disembark from the ferry at Saint-Malo and driven west for an hour.

“Where is everybody?” wonders my husband, digging his toes into fine sand.

“Looking for ice-cream, I expect,” I reply quietly, so as not to draw the kids’ attention to the fact that here at Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, there isn’t a kiosk, souvenir shop or arcade to be seen on the sleepy seafront – just a line of elegant grey stone villas with a sensational view. Our two children don’t seem to have noticed, thankfully; we’ve got a kite, buckets and spades, a picnic and our very own beach.

Brittany map

This is Brittany’s Emerald Coast – so close to the UK, yet it feels a world away. Its chic belle époque resorts provide a sophisticated seaside vibe, while further west the sweeping beaches and heather-strewn headlands offer a place to get closer to nature and admire the green water that gives this stretch of coastline its name. At Mont Saint-Michel, 50 miles to the east, the famously strong tides mean the sea retreats for huge distances and the same is true here. The spot in which I’d paddled hours earlier is now just ripples of sand dotted with cockle shells, while the sea is fast disappearing towards the horizon.

Taking this as our cue to explore, we wend our way up through timber-framed and turreted villas to Pointe de la Garde, the headland that juts out at the southern end of the beach. As we teeter along the narrow paths to a rocky outcrop, a superb panorama spreads out before us: to the northwest, a bird’s eye view of our beach, the vast white sand below us in a soft haze; on the other side, mussel beds, their black poles standing neatly to attention, and more headlands jutting out into the sea – it’s hard to tell if they’re islands or mainland. Beyond are the elegant resorts of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer and Saint-Lunaire.

The 2km-long Grande Plage at St-Cast-le-Guildo, bordered by grand old hotels of the 19th/20th century, Brittany, France

The next day, we head northwest to Fort la Latte, a mighty medieval castle that clings to the cliffs of Cap Fréhel. The walk there via a winding sandy path is busy with tourists (so this is where they all are) but the sight of the 700-year-old castle is worth sharing. After a few centuries and some starring roles in various wars, the fort fell into disrepair and in the 1930s was bought by the Joüon des Longrais family, whose descendants still own it and live here seven months of the year (retreating to Rennes when the wild winter winds get too much). With its drawbridge, turreted tower and portcullis, it’s the children’s perfect specimen. We duck into the dark tower, then climb the precarious narrow steps up on to its roof. Castle locations don’t come any better, especially if your enemy is English.

The medieval Fort la Latte on Cap Fréhel, seen from the top of the castle tower.

On the way back to our hotel near Sables-d’Or-les-Pins, we spot an alluring cove among the pine trees and pull in where a sign points to Plage de l’Anse du Croc. The lowering tide is beginning to reveal tiny islets and rock pools at the far end of the beach, and we walk along the wide curve of red sand for a closer look to discover the rocks are covered in mussels. A retired couple in wellies and peaked caps are diligently cutting them from the rocks – pêche à pied , fishing on foot.

At the other end of the beach, the rock pools are even more fascinating; as the children hop between them looking for stranded fish, I gaze at the rainbow of colours. Grey boulders are festooned with bright green seaweed toupees, blue-black mussels gather in clusters and daubs of yellow lichen look like paint. Pink-white scallop shells are everywhere, bringing further adornment to an already beautiful place.

A local sees us admiring them and tells us the scallops are grown along the coast at Erquy: “They’re very tightly monitored to ensure they’re sustainable.” I ask how, in that case, the shells got here. “People bring them here to eat with picnics, and throw the shells into the rocks.”

While I ponder whether this constitutes litter, he says: “Lovely day, isn’t it? The view is magnifique when it’s not so hazy. On a clear day I can see Guernsey from my house, le paradis fiscal! ” He rolls his eyes. “Have fun!”

Low tide in the channel between Saint-Malo and Dinard.

Three days in and we’re yet to have ice-cream, so we head east to explore the resorts and beaches closer to Dinard and find the large Plage du Longchamp just outside Saint-Lunaire is buzzing. The trendy Le Surf de Joséphine beachside cafe is full so we tuck into lunch at nearby Alizé , serving not only ice-cream but traditional Breton cider, ham baguettes and frites. To walk it all off, we wander out to the headland at Pointe de la Garde Guérin, through bluebells and bright yellow broom flowers. To the west, the low tide has revealed more dark rocks and islets lining up dramatically against the grey-green sea – the view is so breathtaking we sit down to admire it from the grassy, gorse-backed banks of the path.

Later we explore the town of Saint-Lunaire, with its elegant art deco architecture and chic boutiques, and pause to watch sand yachts zip through puddles on the rippled beach. It’s Saturday afternoon and there’s a real holiday atmosphere – it’s great to be somewhere so cheerful after the quiet beaches on the Cap.

The same is true at Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, where we end our afternoon. The main street is buzzing to the soundtrack of an acoustic band playing an early evening set on a bar’s terrace, and we walk past restaurants and vintage bric-a-brac shops towards the Plage du Bechet. Tucked under the hilltop town, the crescent-shaped beach is backed by blue-doored beach huts and overlooks neat lines of small boats resting on the mudflats, while a sinuous creek meanders through the sand past the Chateau de Nessay, a turreted red-stone castle hotel, surrounded by pines on its own little promontory. The late-afternoon haze gives the low-tide coastline an even more ethereal atmosphere and I wish we had more time to wander across the sand to the other side of the bay.

The cutter Le Renard off Saint-Malo

The next morning, at high tide, we head for Saint-Malo to get a flavour of the Emerald Coast from the sea. Boarding the cutter Le Renard, captained by tanned Jean-Claude, we join French families to hoist the sails and cruise along the coast for the morning. The ship, a replica of the 1812 vessel owned by the privateer Robert Surcouf, takes us out in the bay where we can see Saint-Malo’s walled old town gleaming like a silver fortress in the sunshine. The wind is low so we can’t go far, but we pootle around the islets and Napoleonic forts in the bay, waving at fellow sailors on the traditional red-sailed Breton yachts and watching seabirds soar overhead.

On our final evening we walk out to the lighthouse at Cap Fréhel, which perches on the opposite corner of the peninsula to Fort La Latte. It’s past 7pm and the huge car park is almost empty, allowing us to stroll alone along the red stone path past the purple heather-clad rocks to the lighthouse alone. The angular art deco tower is impressive, but the old tower out on the headland has the better view from the cliffs that tower 70 metres above the water. A seabird colony squawks on the rocks below, and the sea is a flat as a crêpe.

As we walk back I gaze upwards at the deep blue sky criss-crossed with feathery plane trails, and wonder how many of those airline passengers are travelling to the other side of the world in search of a coastline with an appealing mix of attractive resorts and natural splendour. If only they knew there was somewhere so enchanting so close by.
